Pumpkins are rolling into Caseville Annual festival returns this weekend BY SETH STAPLETON Tribune Staff Writer CASEVILLE — For a low-to-no cost, fun, family-friendly event, make your way to Caseville for the 17th annual Caseville Pumpkin Fest. While the event has a very unique
fall feel to it, festival-goers still get to take in some typically nice, sunny weather, with it taking place Saturday and Sunday. “It’s a nice kids and family friendly festival,” said festival Chairperson Terri Born. “It’s a nice place where parents and grandparents can bring their kids and it’s not going to cost a ton.” Born said the event has continued to grow in recent years, with orga-
nizers always looking to add new and exciting activities. “It has continued to grow,” Born said. “We always add new things and do things a little different.” Last year, organizers introduced sidewalk chalk art, which was a big hit with the kids. “That went over very well,” Born said. “That was fun.” And as always, the festival will feature yearly favorites like the pumpkin
roll, scarecrow building and lighted parade. Other activities include pumpkin decorating, pumpkin pie eating contest, giant pumpkin contest, petting zoo, candy treasure hunt, bale rolling, balloon animals, wagon rides, a boy and girl bike drawing, pancake breakfast, car show and music. “It’s all about kids and family,” Born said. “It’s just a nice fun, family-filled weekend.”

The Port Austin History Center is located one mile east of Port Austin, at 1424 Pointe Aux Barques Road. The museum, housed in a 1904 Maccabee Society building, presents the history of Port Austin, Grindstone City and Port Crescent. Exhibits include early area industries, shipping, agriculture and homemaking; the Great Thumb Fire of 1881; Native Americans in the Thumb; and the Port Austin Reef Lighthouse. The wooded grounds feature walking trails and several other historic buildings, including a log cabin and log barn, a 19th century Grindstone City house, and a 1950’s barbershop. Special events include an annual quilt show, speaker series and traditional craft classes. The center’s hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in April and May; 1 to 4 p.m. daily in June, July and August; and 1 to 4 p.m. September and October. Tour and learn about Thumb’s rich history Museum Weekend returns this month BY SETH STAPLETON Tribune Staff Writer HURON COUNTY — Each year, the Huron County Historical Society invites people to take a step back in time, as it highlights the many museums in the county. This year’s Huron County Museum Weekend is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28-29. “If we don’t preserve this history, who will?” said Diane Ellicott, president of the Huron County Historical Society. “Every day, another senior citizen passes away, and there goes history.” Of the 18 museums in the county, most will be open for tours and have some sort of activity or activities available for visitors. Ellicott said the weekend presents a great opportunity to show the younger generation how things were before them. Elkton’s Country Street Fair to provide entertainment, shopping Nearly 80 vendors scheduled to be featured BY ERIC YOUNG Tribune Editor ELKTON — There will be more vendors than ever and plenty of activities for people of all ages Sept. 28 at the fifth annual Elkton’s Country Street Fair. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Parks and Rec President and event coordinator Agnes Kosinski. “With all the shopping available, it’s a great way to start Christmas shopping. There’s something for everybody — kids stuff, music. It’s a day of family fun.” Kosinski said this year’s event will feature around 75-80 vendors, with more being welcomed until the day of the event. There will be musical acts, specials at Elkton restaurants, kids activities, wagon rides and more. Kosinski said the idea came from Wyandotte, where she is originally from. “Wyandotte is famous for the Wyandotte Street Fair,” she said. “I remember how much fun it was going down and meeting friends and family. Their’s is huge. It was really cool and went for the entire weekend. It brought families and people together. I had a vision for something right down the middle of Elkton.” And the event has been a success. She said the first year there were around 10 vendors and about a half a block downtown was blocked off. Last year there were 75 vendors and a much larger area blocked off. The event is free to attend, and Kosinski said attendance isn’t counted, but she estimates that between 800 and 1,000 people attended last year’s event. “It was nonstop,” she said of the people arriving throughout the day last year. The event is organized with the help of eight other women, Kosinski said, all whom are more interested in making the event a success than taking credit for it. “We don’t get caught up in titles,” she said. This year’s event will feature an expanded kids zone and a campsite with homemade games for kids courtesy of local Cub Scout Pack 3545. Attendees will be able to meet local heroes, including members of the local fire department, police and EMS. There will be emergency vehicles on hand and the Oliver Township Fire Department is bringing in a smokehouse training unit. The Michigan State Police will have its Fatal Vision see ELKTON, Page 13

Holly Berry Fair returns with unique Christmas gifts

CASEVILLE – For those who want to get their Christmas shopping done sooner rather than later, Caseville has
the perfect event coming up. The 51st annual Holly Berry Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at Caseville Public School. There will be 132 booths across two gymnasium floors and in a few classrooms. There will be around 120 vendors present, with some of them taking up double booths.
Bonnie Dunstan, chairperson of the Holly Berry Fair, said all different kinds of crafts will be available. The products vendors will sell include wood products, beads, birdhouses, cutting boards, ornaments, quilts, knitted crafts and mittens made out of alpaca hair. “There are a great variety of things,” Dunstan said.
The Library Club charges vendors to appear at the event, with the vendors keeping whatever money they make. Any profit the Library Club makes goes toward various charities in Huron County, including to Scheurer Hospital, the Pigeon Library, and giving scholarships to Caseville students.
Dunstan said Caseville looks forward to having this every year, as a lot of people come to visit, stay in town for dinner, and even go down to the Caseville Family Arena roller rink. “It’s a good way to start Christmas shopping,” Dunstan said. “You can find all kinds of gifts and get your shopping done early.”

Lighted Christmas parade in Bad Axe continuing tradition

BAD AXE — Following Thanksgiving, people quickly shift into the holiday spirit and flock to the annual Bad Axe Lighted Christmas Parade. The event takes place beginning at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 — always on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Continuing on with tradition, the Bad Axe Chamber of Commerce will once again feature “Christmas in WhoVille” as the parade theme. “Sharing the excitement of our
town’s featured WhoLiday is always greatly anticipated,” said Bad Axe Chamber of Commerce President Kelsey Connors-Brown. The parade route begins at the Bad Axe Middle School, continues west down Huron Avenue and will finish at the Franklin Inn. It will feature warming stations, many lighted floats, the yet to be named 2019 WhoLiday Cheermeisters, as well as jolly ole Santa himself. Following the parade, the initial lighting of the Christmas Light Show will take place at the Huron Community Fairgrounds. Mistletoe Market returns for 11th year
Annual event takes place Nov. 9 in Bad Axe BY BRADLEY MASSMAN Assistant Editor BAD AXE — It’s time to once again get into the holiday shopping spirit at this year’s Mistletoe Market. The Huron Daily Tribune will host over 80 vendors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Bad Axe Middle School during the annual shopping event. “With such a great turnout last year, we are hoping to see just as many people this time around,” said Renee Willis, advertising director for the Tribune. “There is such a variety of items available this year — you wouldn’t believe it.” For those looking to get a gift for that one person who is nearly impossible to shop for — this is your place. Items include, but are not limited to, gift baskets, handmade wreaths, throw blankets, floral designs, sports attire and a wide variety of baked goods. “We have a huge variety of handmade items,” Willis said. Local businesses, crafters, churches and more will display their wares, which also include a variety of tasty treats. Home-based businesses such as Tupperware, Avon and Pampered Chef will also be on hand. The Tribune has sponsored the event for 11 years. Each year, it grows in terms of both vendors and public participation. “Last year was the biggest turnout in event history,” Willis said. As always, Santa will be there for photo ops with the little ones. Breakfast and lunch options will be available for purchase throughout the day. “We look forward to providing the community with an opportunity to gather and engage in this unique shopping event,” Willis said.

After Kellerman’s death, Thumb Run Abouts worked to extend her legacy, combining her passion for fitness with several fallthemed items that are staples of the Thanksgiving holiday. “We’re an old group,” race organizer Lee Kahler said.
“We were founded by Pat and we just kept the tradition going. What we do is, one of Pat’s favorites things was the Walk for Warmth. Every year, much of the money that we make from this race goes to the Walk for Warmth.” Thumb Run Abouts also contributes to local track and cross country teams as well. This year’s iteration of the Turkey Trot, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 and features a handful of seasonally appropriate prizes. The first-place finisher in
each division will receive a frozen turkey, while second place earns pumpkin pies and third place nets a half gallon of apple cider. In the race, there are 12 male and 12 female division, and each division receives first-through-third place prizes. Additionally, Thumb Run Abouts holds a drawing to receive a free pair of shoes for race participants. Now in its 38th year, the Turkey Trot 5k is unique in that it does not require an official sign up process.
Because the race occurs so late in the calendar year, weather can play a limiting factor, but Kahler reports it is not unusual for participation to creep toward triple digits. Walk-up registration is permitted for the road race. Last year, Garrett Jurgess of Ubly received first-place overall honors with a time of 18:55, and Maddie Laskowski of Bad Axe finished in first for the females with a time of 20:45 to complete the 3.1mile course, which begins at Bad Axe Library.
