This childproofing checklist can help keep kids safe I t’s not long before newborns who need their parents to cater to their every need become toddlers who can’t wait to go exploring on their own. The curiosity can come quickly, which underscores how important it is for parents to childproof their homes.

Childproofing is essential in the nursery where children tend to spend much of their time, but it’s necessary elsewhere in the house as well.

The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles says fractures are the most common injuries among infants and toddlers as they develop a sense of curiosity and gain mobility. Head and mouth/tooth injuries are some additional injuries curious kids may suffer during this period in their lives. This childproofing checklist can help reduce the risk of injury.

• Follow United States Consumer Product Safety Commission crib safety regulations, which include fixed sides, a firm mattress and slats that are no more than 23⁄8 inches apart.

• Install UL-listed carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors on every story of the house and check batteries in detectors frequently.

• Install a temperature guard on the water heater and never set it above 120 F. • Cover all sharp furniture edges and corners with safety padding or specialty bumpers.

• Block all open outlets with outlet covers or safety plugs.

• Place lockable covers on the garbage.

• Install stove knob covers.

• Use latches on any drawers, toilets, doors, or cabinets within the

child’s reach.

• Anchor heavy furniture, such as televisions, bookshelves and dressers, to the walls.

• Install safety guards on windows.

• Pull the crib away from other furniture.

• Use cordless window blinds.

• Place gates at the top and bottom of stairs and use them to prevent access to rooms that are off limits.

• Store cleaning supplies, tools and breakable items out of reach or in a locked cabinet.

• When the child reaches 35 inches in height or can climb out of the crib, it’s time to transition to a toddler bed.

• Choose toy chests or other furniture with spring-loaded hinges.

• Do not hang heavy wall art or shelving over cribs.

• Cover radiators, hot pipes, etc., with protective materials.

• Remove flaking paint and be sure to have paint tested for lead.

• Inspect the home for protruding nails, bolts or other hardware that can cause injury.

A 2020 survey from Homes. com asked more than 5,000 adults across the United States about their favorite house style from a list that included bohemian craftsman, mid-century modern ranch, French chateau, and Tudor, among others. Modern farmhouse was the runaway winner, as participants in 42 of the 50 states indicated this simple, cozy style was their favorite.

Home renovation projects can help homeowners put their own unique stamp on their homes, and such projects can be both aesthetic and functional in nature.

The following are some farmhouse design elements homeowners can consider as they look to transform their home interiors with this popular style in mind.

• Exposed beams: Exposed beams instantly evoke images of a farmhouse.

The home improvement experts at BobVila.com note that this rustic renovation project can utilize real wood or faux beams that look like the real thing. Decorative beams that have nothing to do with a home’s structural integrity can be installed by skilled do-it-yourselfers. However, even faux beams are heavy, and BobVila.com recommends homeowners have an engineer assess their existing structure prior to installation.

• Distressed wood finishes: Distressing is designed to make something look less than perfect. Distressed wood finishes can be found throughout many farmhouse style homes. Furniture and picture frames can provide the distressed look farmhouse fans are looking for. Even though water is such a crucial commodity, many waterways and drinking water sources are under attack. Substances people use everyday are turning up in rivers, oceans and lakes, affecting not only marine life, but people as well.

It’s important to note that the United States has one of the safest public drinking supplies in the world, as does Canada. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates drinking water quality in public water systems, and strict concentration levels for pollutants and chemicals have long since been established. The daily responsibility of providing safe drinking water to the public in Canada rests with the provinces and territories, while municipalities oversee the operations of treatment facilities. However, contamination can occur in source water as well as in distribution systems even after water has been treated. Contaminants can include naturally occurring chemicals and minerals, as well as materials that are used in manufacturing, local land use and through sewer or wastewater releases.

The following are just a few of the contaminants that can cause adverse conditions if present in water.

• Arsenic: Arsenic can enter the water from natural deposits in the earth or from industrial agricultural pollution, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This may be a concern for those who rely on well water.

Hazards that could be lurking in drinking water

ife on Earth would not exist without water. Plants and animals rely on fresh water daily, even more than some people may recognize.

In fact, survival experts note that a human can survive without food for anywhere from eight to 21 days, but only three days to a week without adequate water.

• Benzene: Federal drinking water surveys in the United States estimated that roughly 1.3 percent of groundwater systems contained benzene. Large concentrations of benzene can be troublesome because it is known to cause cancer. Benzene is found in crude oil and gasoline, but also can occur naturally in volcanic gases and smoke from forest fires.

• Chlorine: Chlorine in small amounts has been standard in U.S. drinking water treatment since 1904 and is in most Canadian drinking water. While chlorine can eradicate many pathogens, there is a downside. In the 1970s, scientists discovered that chlorine added to water can mix with organic matter and form trihalomethanes, one of which is chloroform, according to the water safety resource Water Benefits Health. THMs increase the production of free radicals that can be cancer-causing.

• Giardia: This tiny parasite is found in soil or water that has been contaminated with feces from infected animals or people, advises the World Health Organization. Swallowing contaminated drinking water or recreational water at lakes or pools can cause gastrointestinal illness.

• Improper pH: There are some proponents of consuming alkaline water to increase fat burning and neutralize acidic blood, as well as to act as an antioxidant. However, according to the Cleveland Clinic, elevating the pH too much toward the alkaline side can affect kidney function and also cause the skin to become dry, itchy and irritated.

Water is needed to maintain health, but various contaminants may be lurking in water supplies. Testing water regularly can provide insight as to what might be hiding among those oxygen and hydrogen molecules.

Kitchen Remodeling

R

emodeling a kitchen is a really big job both in terms of cost and construction.

There are a few things to consider before taking on a remodeling project, and hopefully you’ll thank yourself for planning it carefully from the start.

Financial Considerations Always buy the best quality materials you can afford as you want to have high-quality, functional items both for your own use and for potential re-sale value. High-quality cabinets, countertops and appliances will also last much longer so hopefully you will never have to repeat the renovation process again. Consider exploring high-end used materials or re-purpose older cabinets. It’s tempting to buy all sorts of gadgets and fancy appliances, but be practical because it’s better to go with reliable basics that you know you’ll use.

Planning a Layout More than any room in the house, the kitchen needs to be practical and functional.

What is working well and what isn’t in your current layout, and factor that into your decision-making for the new layout. Arrange the sink, stove and refrigerator in a classic work triangular pattern to save unnecessary steps in the kitchen. Also, consider how many people might be working in the kitchen at the same time. If there’s enough space, consider adding an island or wheeled cart that can be moved around the room and hidden when not being used.

Kitchen Space Planning A contractor can help with safety considerations, but it’s up to you to plan for convenience. Allow for 18-24 inches on each side of the sink to provide adequate work space.

Leave adequate floor space in front of appliances so the doors can be opened and you can still walk in front of them, at least 30-48 inches. Also, make sure the direction and depth of the swinging refrigerator doors is appropriate, especially if it will sit against a wall that might prohibit opening all the way. Leave at least 42 inches between the counters and the island so people can easily walk through without disrupting others.

Remember that the remodel isn’t just about construction, you also need to factor in the additional fixtures that will be necessary to finalize the remodel.
