How to Love Your

Closet

f the only thing you want to do after opening your closet is to shut the door again, it’s time for an overhaul. You don’t have to be a neat freak to create and keep a functional, tidy closet space. It just takes planning and tough love.

Let your Hangers Help: If you have a mishmash of hangers, invest in all new ones or buy more of what you have the most of. Matching hangers is more visually appealing but also makes it easier to see what you have.

Consciously Purge: Go through everything one-by-one and donate or sell what no longer flatters or fits you or you don’t love wearing.

Be ruthless. A closet filled only with clothes you feel great in and are happy wearing makes getting dressed a breeze. If there’s dust on it, ditch it. Recycle torn or broken items, why give yourself an additional job of getting them fixed. Aside from getting rid of clutter, you’ll have a mental inventory of what you have, making it easier to shop for what you truly need.

Live in the Season: Store off-season items out of the way on the top shelves, under a bed or elsewhere. Use plastic bins with labeled lids, rotating with the changing seasons. Adjustable shelves make it easy to tweak your closet when the weather changes, for example taller shelves for sweaters versus T-shirts.

Sort it Out: Place items you wear most often front and center. You wear 20 percent of your clothes, 80 percent of the time. Sort items by type such as button-down shirts, dress pants, casual pants, etc., and maybe sort by color.

Light it Up: A well-lit bright space helps you stay motivated to keep a tidy space. A simple wall light that turns on easily would be beneficial.

Keep the Peace: Now that you’ve tidied up, maintain it! Every time you buy something new, toss something. Keep a bag in your closet for donations. Wall hooks are useful for not-quite-dirty clothes, keeping them off the floor. They can also hold jewelry, belts and random items that might start the clutter.

Did you know?

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Time for a new shower head!

S

ome people are more proactive about cleaning and maintaining their shower heads. If this is the case, they may not need to replace their shower heads as frequently. Most people neglect to do this, but the reasons for keeping up with the replacements are more important than you might expect. Below are some factors that might help determine if it’s time for a new shower head.

Buildup: This is bound to happen as chemical additives are put into tap water to keep it safe and healthy to drink. Calcium is the most prominent cause of shower head buildups. Some cleaning solutions or vinegar mixtures can help to clean it off, but if it’s past the six-month mark then it is probably a better idea to simply replace the shower head. People typically don’t notice the chemical buildup until I’s severe enough to significantly change the water pressure.

Age: Older shower heads can begin to rust and leak. Shower head deterioration can reduce water pressure and cause unnecessary and annoying dripping. Dated shower heads can reduce the relative efficiency of your bathroom.

Style: Older styles can clash with newer bathroom décor, especially after a remodel. There are many styles, sizes and models to pick from to match your bathroom’s décor or your personal comfort level.

Bacteria: Bacteria thrives in places all over your bathroom, and can easily live in the shower head. The most effective way of eliminating bacteria is to remove the current shower head and put a brand new one in its place.

Black Mold: This can be identified by many little black spots all across the shower head. It will take much more effort to get rid of it.

If it looks too severe, it is best to simply replace. If your shower head is made of plastic, try a metal one instead as they don’t attract black mold as easily. *Black mold and bacteria are something to pay attention to in your bathroom due to the high levels of moisture in the air. Because mold can be developed by constant dripping, please make sure that the water is completely turned off after a shower*

Did you know?

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
