SOFTBALL Coach: Kaitlyn Dodson Last year’s record: 11-4 Returning starters: Shortstop Hayley Sloan -- Hayley brings experience and a decent stick. Catcher/ center fielder Kourtney Logsdon -- Kourtney brings experience behind the plate, quick reactions, and a strong arm in the field. Pitcher/ first baseman/outfielder Rachel Hager -- Rachel is very accurate in her pitching, and a great hitter. Pitcher/ third baseman Marlee Brown -- Marlee brings a variety of different pitches and is also a great hitter. Center fielder Emma Hymes -- Emma is our slap hitter and is quick on the bases. First baseman/ second baseman Jaelyn Simpson -- Jaelyn is a great defender and can be counted on to put the ball in play.

Season outlook: My expectations for this season are for my returning starters to be leaders and demonstrate how one is supposed to represent their team, school and community.

I expect great defense, and my hitters to put the ball in play when needed.

Also, Trevon Volk, Tate Fullerton, Ethan Oliver.

Key losses: Chance Fuqua, Wyatt Logsdon.

Key newcomers: Infielder Jack Anderson, infielder/pitcher Tyce Fullerton, utility player Maverick Henry, outfielder Cole Behymer.

Pitching overview: Gabe and Mason have been in the varsity rotation for four years. They both have good command and mound presence. Wort, Carr, Groesch, Trevon Volk, Montgomery, Fullerton, Henry and Miller round out the staff.

I like the depth of our staff, and with our schedule of three to four games a week, we need to have a deep staff to compete.

Hitting overview: We return an experienced lineup, with Wort setting the table and Blakeley and Henry being RBI men. We have a good mixture of speed to throw in there.

SOFTBALL Coach: David Woodruff

Klare Flynn is our starting center fielder. She has great range and a great arm. She hit .464 last year, and much like her sister, is a terror on the basepaths as she will always look to swipe a base when she gets on. Having the twins hit at the top of the order puts pressure on the defense.

Cyrah Dunlap has been kind of an unsung hero for us. She has the ability to play a few positions and will be looking to catch or play second base. She has a great short and compact swing, and hits for power and average (she hit .345 last year).

She loves the game, and it shows when she plays.

Savannah Rogers is a senior, and she might be the wildcard for us this year. She is going to be pushing hard for one of the outfield starting positions.

She has a great glove (probably made the best defensive play for us last year against Rushville-Industry), and her bat has plenty of pop. She has the potential to be a huge bat in the middle of our order.

Taryn Moorman is one of the best kids I have had the opportunity to coach. She has a great family who is very supportive, and she wants to be successful and has been for us. Her sophomore year was great. She was 15-1 with a 1.80 ERA and had 113 strikeouts in only 93 innings pitched.

She is a bona fide ace, and she works hard all year round to get better.

Season outlook: I am very excited to have this group together. I have coached most of them from middle school on, and I have looked forward to this season for a while. I feel that we will have a lot of success this spring, and I’m hoping it’s the best team I have had since I have been here.

CALHOUN BASEBALL Coach: Casey Longnecker Last year’s record: 4-16 Returning starters: Catcher/ pitcher Luke Wickenhauser (.410 avg.), outfielder Nick Baalman (.167 avg.), utility Cade Sievers (.289 avg.), infielder Auggie Squier (.190 avg.), infielder Davis Wilson.

Key losses: Kaden Baalman, Grant Gilman, Colby Clark, Corey Nelson.

Key newcomers: Infielder Jake LaMarsh is our lone player from the Brussels co-op. I have nine freshmen coming in who all pitch and play multiple positions. They have had success at the younger levels, and I expect quite a few to contribute right away.

Pitching overview: Our ace is Luke Wickenhauser (signed with Lincoln Land). He gives us a chance to compete in any game he pitches. Davis Wilson had a lot of quality innings as a freshman last season. The rest of the staff will be a combination of a lot of young arms from the freshmen and sophomore groups.

Hitting overview: Wickenhauser will be our number three hitter, with the ability to drive the ball.

We are hoping the young squad will scratch out plenty of other hits to set the table for him.

Season outlook: With small upperclass numbers, we will be a very young squad this year.

The underclassmen have been a pleasant surprise, with good numbers and some quality kids who have played a lot of ball.

Senior Luke Wickenhauser is one of the top pitchers in the area, and he will give us a chance to win any time he is on the mound.

If the remaining staff can pump in strikes, and we field the ball, I would like to say we will be competitive day in and out. With such a young team, I know there will be days that we will have some growing pains.

SOFTBALL Coach: Ann Gilman (first season) Last year’s record: 15-9 Returning starters: Senior pitcher Kylie Angel (2.821 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) -- Led the team in slugging percentage (.688) and batting average (.459). Senior catcher Ella Sievers – Made only two errors in 136 innings for a fielding percentage of .990; batted .338. Senior outfielder Charleigh Wilson – Batted .464 and shared the team lead for runs batted in.

Sophomore Delani Klaas -- Can play anywhere and will serve as a utility player. Strong and quick, with a good bat. Junior Jaelyn Hill -- Quick on the corner defense at third, and quick on the bases.

Pitching overview: Expect Kylie Angel and Audrey Gilman to get significant innings. Kylie throws hard and has great movement on her ball. Audrey Gilman is a flame-thrower with great spin.

Alana Sievers (sophomore) is another young hard-thrower working to control the movement on her pitches.

Hitting overview: Expecting our returning seniors -- Ella Sievers, Kylie Angel and Charleigh Wilson -- to lead the hitting stats. Our newcomers mentioned above along with Anna Oswald and Katie Matthews will round out a strong lineup from top to bottom.

BASEBALL Coach: Ryan Howard Last year’s record: 4-11 Returning players: Seniors – shortstop Gus Coonrod, outfielder Jackson Cotner, infielder Kyle Leonard, catcher Grant Pohlman; Juniors -outfielder Mason Baumgartner, infielder Boden Flowers; Sophomore -- outfielder Caleb Howard.

Key losses: Third baseman/ pitcher Brady Cox. Cox was the Hawks’ lone starting senior last year. After coming back from a leg injury, he was a key component to the team’s regional success. He left a large hole to fill.

Key newcomers: This year Carrollton has added two new senior infielders: Travis Evans and Matt Camden.

Last year’s record: 11-11 We have a talented roster this year with depth that will lead to some competition for starting positions. We are looking to compete for a WIVC championship by locking down defensively and being aggressive offensively and on the basepaths.

Returning starters: Marissa Cox – primarily played third base last year, batting .298 across 17 games. She is our lone senior. We will be looking for her to provide leadership for our young team.

Pitching overview: Torrie McAdams is our ace. She will pitch significant innings, with Evie White on deck to help out whenever needed. Torrie has an arsenal of pitches with movement, and Evie comes in with her own years of training and multiple pitches to assist.

Hitting overview: We have a lineup that can be quite versatile this year at the plate. Some players hit for just power, but most of them can go long or play the short game -- whatever is needed at the time in the game. We will be looking to Torrie to lead the team again offensively, but with her versatility and quickness, her options are open at the plate.

Bailee Mathews is another player who has been consistent at the plate, and we will look for her to improve on last year’s rookie performance. We will count on Laural Rothe and Aliyah Roberts at the plate as well.

Fielding overview: At this point, we have 21 girls who have signed up with lots of talent. So our field could look completely different by game time.

Season outlook: We are definitely looking to pick up where we ended the season last year. We had a rough start, with a lot of inexperience at the varsity level.

However, as the season went on and girls learned new positions, they began to come together and were more successful to end the season. We look to improve on what we finished with and have a much better season this year.

PITTSFIELD BASEBALL Coach: Jerred Heinz Last year’s record: 10-10 Returning starters: Senior shortstop/pitcher Nate Scranton --Nate started every game at shortstop as a junior. He also had a team best ERA (1.64 in 38 1/3 innings) despite the fact he never started a single game last season. Nate was clutch in relief in a total of 13 appearances in 2021, and he’ll be the ace of our staff in 2022. Hitting: .435 avg., .500 OBP, 18 RBI; pitching: 38 1/3 IP, 1.64 ERA, 44 K. Senior outfielder/pitcher/ catcher Caden Casto -Caden put up some good power numbers last year as a junior, and he’ll be in the heart of our order again this season. Defensively, he mostly caught in 2021, but he will most likely be starting this season somewhere in the outfield. Caden could also push to be a starter this year on the mound. Hitting: .273 avg., .452 OBP, 4 HR, 11 BB. Senior infielder/pitcher TJ Reel -- TJ missed out on half of his freshman baseball season, and obviously all of his sophomore season as a result of the COVID pandemic. Despite the fact he went nearly two years without playing baseball, he put together a nice junior

season, starting a majority of his games at second base. He also played a little third base.

TJ started a few games on the mound in 2021, and I expect him to be a significant part of our pitching staff in 2022.

Hitting: .328 avg., .419 OBP, 18 R; pitching: 20 1/3 IP, started four games.

Tomhave (infield/pitcher) -- Played in every game last year as a freshman and started on the mound in the regional quarterfinal win over Riverton. He finished the 2021 season with a 3-1 record. Brennan will push to be one of our top starters in the rotation this season.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Jackson Fish -- Jackson pitched eight innings last year and finished with a 1-2 record. Junior outfielder/ pitcher Nolan Daniel -Nolan started 19 games as a sophomore in 2021, mostly starting in left field. He led the team last year with seven stolen bases.

Sophomore Justin Pennock (infield/pitcher) -- Played in 11 games last year at the varsity level. Justin will be a big arm for us on the mound this season, and he’ll play an important role for us defensively because he can play any position except catcher. Key losses: Cade Tomhave, Peyton Apps and Liam Davidsmeyer.

Other returning starters: Sophomore Cole Walston (outfield/catcher/pitcher) -- Cole played in 18 varsity games in 2021, hitting .303 while stealing seven bases.

Cole will see some time this season both in the outfield and behind the plate as well.

He will also be able to log some innings for us on the mound.

Sophomore Konner Allen (infield/pitcher) -- Played in 17 games last year, and started two games on the mound. He will be another big arm in our rotation this season and will hit in the middle of the order.

Key newcomers: Senior Logan Shinn (outfield/ pitcher); freshman Luke Saxe (catcher/infielder/pitcher).

Season outlook: I think winning 20-plus games is a realistic goal for this year’s team as long as we do the little things it takes to win ball games. Another goal for our team is to make a deep postseason run.

SOFTBALL Coach: Kristi Heafner Last year’s record: 12-7 Returning starters: Senior catcher Emma Saxe (.479 avg., 3 HR, 21 RBI, 23 R); junior first baseman Jaynee Heafner (.300 avg., 7 RBI);

senior second baseman Matti McCartney (.410 avg., 12 RBI, 31 R); senior shortstop Taylor Scott (.462 avg., 24 RBI, 19 R); sophomore center fielder Rebecca Neupauer (.588 avg., 15 RBI, 30 R).

Pitching overview: We expect junior Carlee Constable (.333 batting average) to do a majority of the pitching. Freshman Emma Henry and junior Jaynee Heafner will pick up the slack in the pitching department. Those three athletes will be working together to complete games.

Our biggest loss from last season was our pitcher, Audrey White. She pitched most of our games.

Hitting overview: We look to add some new power to our offensive lineup this season. We have three freshmen -- Taylor Peebles, Emma Henry and Grace Henry – who will help the team, along with our returners. Ella Constable will add a nice bat to the group as well.

Season outlook: We have improved over the past several seasons and want to continue to do that. We have set some team goals that include improving the strikeout numbers and errors from last year. We have great senior leadership, and we will depend on that this season.

Sophomore catcher Karlie Hoke -- Karlie emerged as our catcher last year. She was an honorable mention all-conference selection.

We expect bigger and better things from her this year.

Sophomore outfielder Marissa Jiannoni -- Marissa started in the outfield for us as a freshman last season. Her defense was outstanding. She will take on a bigger role on the offensive side of the field this season.

Senior pitcher/infielder Paige Klauzer -- Paige will pick up some innings this season on the mound and be a presence in the middle of the batting order.

Junior infielder Erin Wallace -- Injuries slowed Erin down last season, and we hope to avoid them this year. When healthy, she is a presence in the lineup, and we hope the answer at shortstop this season.

Newcomers: Sophomore Gabbie Branson (P/1B) -Gabbie will help fill in the pitching innings this year, and we hope her bat fits in the middle of our lineup.

Sophomore Hailey Brown (2B) -- Hailey slides into the second base position. She brings a good glove and a feistiness that I love in a player.

Freshman Morgan Miller (IF) -- We will look at Morgan at several different positions on the field. She has a terrific softball IQ that allows the staff to trust her wherever we put her on the field.

Pitching overview: No. 1 Amber Teimeyer, No. 2 Gabbie Branson, No. 3 Paige Klauzer.

Hitting overview: I feel we are a little behind at this point. We have put a lot of early season work into our defense and where girls fit. As the season gets going and we can see more pitching, I feel like we will get stronger.

Fielding overview: We are still trying to figure out where the pieces fit. Injury and illness have limited us in getting to see our entire team. We will be strong at catcher, which is a key for us. Once we can figure out who fits best at shortstop and center field, I feel like we can be very good defensively.

Season outlook: We could struggle early until we figure a few things out. But as the season progresses and girls get comfortable with their role, I feel like we could make some noise late in the season.

Pitching is always good, and we have some strong arms that will keep us in games. The Sangamo Conference is always strong, and I expect the same this season.

Sophomore shortstop/ catcher/pitcher Nolan Turner -- As a freshman, he was an all-conference shortstop. Nolan batted .317, was second on the team in RBIs and had 17 stolen bases. Expect Nolan to continue to improve and excel as he continues his time at Routt.

Pitching overview: Josie Bartels will pitch most innings for us, as long as we can play defense behind her and not walk very many batters. Josie isn’t going to throw balls by everyone but has pretty good spin and will have more command over hitting her spots. We have some young girls, and girls without many innings of experience, who can come in and throw some strikes. We are looking for one or two pitchers to help Josie out.

Fielding overview: Hailey Reynolds is a four-year starter in the outfield and runs the outfield well. We expect her to continue in center and be our anchor out there. We’ve had a different shortstop each year for three to four years now, and are once again looking to some young girls with strong arms. We have experienced girls in both the infield and outfield, and we are looking to those girls to lead our team to a tough defense.

Season outlook: I am excited to see this team work together and grow. I think that we will really have some girls challenge each other and make our team stronger and deeper.

With the combination of some experienced players with talented players coming up, I expect to be competitive this year. The work being put in during practice has our coaching staff excited.

BASEBALL Coach: Grant DeWitt Last year’s record: 5-11 Returning starters: Tyson Brown (pitcher/infielder) -- We look for Tyson to take the lead role in our pitching rotation. When he is not pitching, he will be controlling the middle infield. Excited to see what he can do during a full season as a junior.

Cole Meyer (infielder) -- Cole brings a lot of baseball knowledge to the team.

He has been playing varsity baseball for the last four years defensively. We look for him to have lots of success at the plate this year, too, and use his leadership skills to help bring the younger kids up quickly.

Lathan Barnett (outfield/pitcher) – Lathan, who played a majority of the time in the outfield, will return. Looking for him to hit in the middle of the lineup and drive runs in this year. We are also working with Lathan to gain consistency on the mound.

Tysyn Mast (outfield/pitcher) -- Excited to have Tysyn back in center field. He gets great reads off the bat and can cover a lot of ground in center field. We also look for Tysyn to provide some quality innings on the mound as well from the left side.

Mason Berry (catcher) -- Our everyday catcher as a freshman is back, and we are looking forward to his growth behind the plate. Mason has been working hard on his hitting, and we look forward to his success at the plate, too.

Key losses: Noah Smith, Eli Crews, Gabe Drake and Grant Frost. A group of kids who never got a true varsity baseball experience due to the 2020 season being cancelled and the 2021 being shortened so much. Great group of boys!

Key newcomers: Freshman Dalton Hutton -- Dalton will come into the baseball program getting slated to pitch several innings for us. Having watched him over the last few years, he will come in and provide success on the mound.

When not pitching, we look for Dalton to get time on the left side of the infield

and corner outfield spots.

Freshman Carson Brown -- Carson is a corner infielder who has some pop off his bat. We are hoping for him to gain confidence early and be able to drive in runs for us. He has also been working hard on the mound, so hopefully he can log some innings as well.

Freshman Landyn Woods -- Another baseball-minded kid who has played a lot of summer baseball over the previous years. Landyn has good hands and a live arm. We look for him to play some infield and hop on the mound at times as well for us this spring.

Freshman Cameron Sievers -- Cameron will hopefully be able to provide some quality innings on the mound as well as play second base and outfield positions.

Freshman Caden Meyer -- Caden is coming into the program with several innings played at catcher. Hopefully, he will allow Berry some time away from the position as the season moves forward.

Pitching overview: With low overall numbers throughout the program, we are looking for many of our players to be involved in the pitching rotation this spring. Going into the season we have high expectations for both Tyson Brown (junior) and Dalton Hutton (freshman) to lead our staff. Brown brings more experience this year, as he was one of our conference starters last season. He has a good understanding on how to pitch, execute pitches, and hold runners on base. He has worked hard in the weight room over the last year, which has helped him gain more velocity on his fastball. Hutton, although a freshman, will enter the season with high expectations. He has a live arm and has the ability to throw three different pitches for strikes consistently. Our goal as a pitching staff this year is to throw strikes, let the defense do their jobs, and eliminate free bases.

Hitting overview: Hitting was one of our weaker points last season, and we have spent a lot of time early on in practice working on our mechanics, philosophy and approach at the plate. We want to put as much pressure as possible on the defense. Looking for Tyson Brown to be our leadoff hitter again this spring, as he held that role last season. Look for Lathan Barnett, Cole Meyer, Mason Berry, Jackson Ford, Carson Brown, Dalton Hutton and Landyn Woods to all play key roles offensively as well.

Fielding overview: At this point we have several players getting work at multiple positions. With having low numbers, there will be many games where fielding positions will be dictated by who is pitching that day.

Season outlook: We have high expectations for this group this year. We have a good upper class that understands the game and how to be successful in varsity baseball, and five freshmen who will come in and be key players for us.

As coaches, we are excited to see what this group can do, especially getting the chance to play a full schedule -- something that hasn’t been done since the senior group were freshmen.

SOFTBALL Coach: Kandice Kunkel Last year’s record: 6-9 Returning starters: Senior catcher Zaylei Evans (.493 avg., 21 stolen bases). Zaylei brings leadership and the element of surprise to the lineup.

Junior pitcher/center fielder Rylee Burk -- Rylee brings experience and poise to the circle. Sophomore left fielder Trystan White -- Trystan brings experience and willingness to play wherever makes the team strongest. Sophomore center fielder/shortstop/pitcher Bryleigh Fox (.411 avg.) -- Bryleigh brings speed and knowledge to the lineup on both sides of the ball. Sophomore outfielder Alli Peterson -- Alli brings a positive attitude and good work ethic to the team.

Other returning players: Junior Abbie

Vieira (IF) and sophomore Annabell Schafer (OF). These girls are both hard workers, and they’re very accepting of their roles on this team to make this a successful season.

Key losses: First baseman Zoe Evans (.435 avg., three-time All-WIVC, All-State Second Team in 2019) and shortstop Sydney Elliott (.343 avg.).

Key newcomers: Sophomore Maeleigh Alexander (1B) -- Maeleigh should contribute by being a solid target for the infield at first base. Freshman Brylee Lawson (IF/OF) -- Brylee will contribute positively on both offense and defense for the Cougars. Freshman Vickie McGee (IF/OF) -- Vickie will contribute to the lineup on the basepaths and in the field with her speed. Freshman Kylie Clayton (IF/OF) -- Kylie will provide the lineup with a positive attitude and willingness to play wherever she makes the team strongest.

Pitching overview: Rylee Burk and Bryleigh Fox, both of whom are capable of starting and finishing games.

Hitting overview: We lost two HUGE bats to graduation, but this group of girls has what it takes to put runs up on the board. We will be aggressive on the bases, and we will take advantage of the opportunities presented by the defense.

Fielding overview: We lost a vital 6-3 combo on the infield to graduation, but we have newcomers and returning starters who are no strangers to playing on the dirt. They are putting in the work and are smart enough to know how to play any position on the field. We will be defensively solid once again this year.

Season outlook: I expect the girls to get better each time they play. I expect them to have solid defense and productive at-bats each time they step into the box.

I think as long as our pitching can limit the number of free bases, we can be competitive this season. What we lack in numbers, we make up for with heart.

On any given day, one or more of these girls could have a stellar day at the plate.

They are capable of being solid up and down the lineup.
