Harbor Beach Class of 2020 Hannah Emerick The transition from high school to college is an important step in one’s life, and it is one that Harbor Beach High School has greatly prepared me for. Looking back to the beginning of my freshman year, I cannot believe how much I have learned, the friendships I have made, and how many great memories I have from high school.

Academically, I feel prepared for college because of the challenging courses I was able to take.

The variety of choices in dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement classes provided a number of benefits to my future.

Not only have I earned college credits, but I have also experienced how college work is different from high school. This reduces the stress of all the unknown

aspects about my future.

Additionally, certain classes such as Anatomy & Physiology and AP Biology helped me choose a career by exploring my interests in this field.

The education at Harbor Beach has allowed me to feel confident in entering the next part of my life.

Aside from academics, I have met friends and teachers during high school that have been extremely supportive.

Some of my closest friends are people I did not even know before high school. My teachers and other staff genuinely care about all students and want us to succeed. Our academic advisor, Mr. Williams, provides us with countless scholarship and leadership opportunities to help us in the future.

My involvement in extracurricular activities such as National Honor

Society, band, cross country, track, and Quiz Bowl have taught me leadership skills and teamwork. Particularly, my running coach, Mrs. Anderson, has taught me the value of dedication and passion in the work that I am doing. Ms. DeDona, my band director, has been a constant support not only in band, but in my other interests and future plans as well. The staff and students at Harbor Beach create a great atmosphere for learning.

Overall, the education at Harbor Beach High School goes beyond the typical subjects. My school has helped me learn more about myself and others, which is beneficial to my future. I truly feel like I have had a great high school experience, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.

Jenna Guza As we swiftly move towards graduation, I am looking forward to the next step of my life. In the fall, I will attend Savcvginaw Valley State University to obtain a bachelor’s degree inNursing.

Harbor Beach High School has prepared me for my future in their close-knit, caring environment. I owe to this school my successes, and I am grateful for the knowledge that they have blessed me with. Over the years there has been one teacher who has worked with me more than the rest: Joseph Terwillegar.

Mr. Terwillegar is one of the math and science teachers at Harbor Beach. He taught me three years in high school. While in high school, I took his Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Biology, Anatomy

& Physiology, and AP Statistics courses.Mr. Terwillegar nurtured my love for math and science, which greatly influenced my decision to join the medical field to become a nurse. Outside of academics, other clubs and extracurricular activities at Harbor Beach have helped prepare me for my future. I participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball throughout high school. These sports developed more than just my love for winning. They taught me the importance of determination, teamwork, and work ethic.

Through good seasons and bad, Harbor Beach athletics showed me more than just how to win and lose. They showed me how to overcome and succeed,

regardless of the situation that I am thrown into. I was also active in both student council and National Honor Society. These organizations taught me the importance of getting involved and becoming a leader. By working with the other members to fundraise and plan, I learned how to be a better team member and leader. Overall, I owe my successes to Harbor Beach and the opportunities that I was provided with here.

I am excited for my future, but I will never forget what got me here.

Harbor Beach is an excellent place to grow up, and I am thankful for the coaches, teachers, administrators, and community members who provided me with the skills necessary to succeed as I move on to the next step of my life.

Laker High School Class of 2020 Dear Underclassmen & Fellow Students, As a senior at EPBP Lakers during this crazy time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, hear me out and truly take in what I am about to explain to you.

For as long as I can remember, I couldn’t wait to be done with school.

Impatiently awaiting every break we were given and never failing to go to bed praying for massive amounts of snow days. Purposely scheduling things during school hours. Waking up with no intention of being there.

As I write to you now, all I want to do is be able to go to school. To be able to have that consistency in routine, to ride the tech bus in the morning and have super cringey conversations with my best friend, to walk the halls, to laugh about the most random things in my fourth hour Senior Strategies Class, and to sit there and truly learn face-to-face with my teachers/ instructors. Because for me, it’s going to be my last.

Dear Laker Schools, As the next step of my life is soon approaching, I wanted to share my feelings of gratitude and appreciation towards the opportunities you have given me, the lessons you have taught me, and the memories I was able to be a part of. When I first came here my eighth grade year, I would’ve never imagined the bountiful ways I would be impacted. From becoming passionate about extracurriculars to building meaningful relationships with teachers and classmates, the list goes on! But most importantly, I was able to learn and apply the personal lessons I have learned throughout my high school experience to my everyday life.

The biggest lesson I learned here at Lakers is to always stay true to yourself. Growing up at a parochial school for the majority of my childhood, I was exposed to a smaller social group and I never had to enhance my character. After transferring schools my eighth grade year, I was immediately introduced to new cliques and people. I would try to change my character multiple times so I could “fit in”. But I soon came to realize that it’s not worth changing myself for others, when my opinion of

As far as I knew, Friday, March 13th, 2020 wasn’t going to possibly be my last day of high school - everything I have been working so hard for, I was taking for granted and am now watching it be taken from my hands.

Little did I know, that Friday could very well be my last bus ride, my last walk through those halls, my last everything that had to do with me being a student at Laker High School.

I literally couldn’t wait for my trip to Florida in four days, but just like that it was taken away. I talked about this with my closest friends for months, and anticipated it for weeks.

Little did I know that my practice on Tuesday, March 10th, 2020 was the last time I would participate in what has been my life for the past eight years, Theatrical Arts. The Art that I have worked so hard for was being ripped away. Now, I will never act in another production at Laker High School, and that breaks my heart to say.

I’m beyond grateful to be involved in many extracurriculars during my high school career. Out of all of them, the one that has impacted me the most is sports. Sports have been a part of my life for over 10 years, and became even more significant throughout these past four years of high school. I have learned many different lessons during this time, such as learning how to work with different groups of people, assuring confidence in myself, and not worrying what others have to say.

Even through the highs and lows, I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything. The reason for that is because I wouldn’t be who I am today without those highs and lows.

I will always be thankful for the friendships and memories made.

Throughout this journey, I especially want to thank all the teachers and staff who were always so kind and supportive.

I have been a Laker student for the past 13 years and I honestly would not consider it any less than my home. Just like any other family, the Laker family has helped prepare me to move forward in my next steps in life. I would like to personally thank all my teachers in the Laker school district for being able to help me morf into the individual I am now. I have been blessed by so many instructors encouraging me to move successfully forward. Specifically I would like to thank my agricultural advisors My high school, although ending early, has been the greatest time of my life so far. I am the Student Council president this year, and it has been awesome to be able to serve my class and my school by planning assemblies, homecoming, and more.

My favorite high school memory is participating in the Dual Enrollment program at the Huron Intermediate School District. Because of this program, I have able to hang out with a really great group of kids, from my

The Class of 2020 may not be able to walk at our graduation; let alone go on our senior trip, picnic, etc. The things we have worked so hard to achieve for these past thirteen years are becoming nothing but our imagination. It feels like the year we have all been waiting so patiently for, is being taken and we can do nothing about it.

To My Fellow Classmates, Class of 2020, hang in there and stay nothing but strong. Keep working hard for what you want. Keep being determined, willful, and skilled. Most importantly, keep true to who you are! You make your own decisions, and you choose how you want things to affect your life. These last thirteen years with you have been unforgettable, and I’m glad that I have the memories that have been made within those four walls we call our highschool. We all may not like nor

a good leader, but to be a good person. Your willingness to serve others is amazing, and has inspired me to do the same. Through the many memories we have spent together, from national convention to leadership contests, it has been nothing but laughs (well, most of the time). You have taught me so many valuable lessons in life, which is something I will continue to and always treasure. Thank you for always being someone I can look up to!

As I begin to close this letter, I want to say a message to my younger peers and classmates. Please never take anything for granted. As a senior graduating with the class of 2020, there have been many events looked forward to that have been stripped away. I looked forward to the future rather than appreciate what the present had to offer, which is something I would change now in a heartbeat. Cherish every moment with your friends, extracurriculars, homecomings, dances, and sports games. Because you never know what the future may have in store.

Showing us how to be functional members of society. You’ve seen us at both our worst and our best, and have given tons of advice to get us through obstacles we have faced so far in life. I feel as if you don’t get this often, but we appreciate you beyond words can say! We may not express it often, but our gratitude is much more than expected.

With that, lays my advice: do not await for it to be over. Do not take the

memories you are making for granted.

Talk to your classmates often, keep in touch. Thank your teachers and administration for all that they do for you. Thank your coaches/instructors who show you discipline and help you better yourselves in the sport(s) you have chosen Try new things, explore outside your comfort zone. Go hard at all times and give 110% effort at everything you do. Follow my advice and don’t allow your high school memories to be a blurr. It’s the last time to enjoy childhood before college.

It will be over in the blink of an eye, so make the most of every situation.

Make the most of every classmate you come into contact with. One day, you will wish for it back; but then it will be too late. Stay strong, stay beautiful, and most importantly: stay you!

My name is Elly Hyzer and I am this year’s senior class treasurer. While it is unfortunate that us seniors are missing out on our last few weeks of high school, I am personally grateful for everything we still got to experience. The thing I am most grateful for is being able to participate in my last dance team performance. I have been on the dance team since freshman year and it is definitely what I enjoyed most about my time in high school.

"Being the President of NHS, Vice-President of Student Council, and a member of FFA and several other organizations, I have learned the importance of being involved in high school. All of these organizations have had an impact on me in several different ways, whether it be being comfortable in public speaking, working with a team, as a team, or even creating and sharing my own ideas into the certain topic. Throughout my high school career, I have always had a passion for sports. I love the thrill and adrenaline rush you get from them. I have played Hockey and I ran cross country. Little did I think I would enjoy running three or more miles a day, but to my surprise it was actually pretty fun. Don’t get me wrong, the running was not my favorite, but spending time with my teammates was awesome. A huge thanks to Garett Jurges for being an amazing coach and encouraging me to join in tenth grade.

Back when I ran eighth grade track he would always tell me I should run cross country but I always refused. My favorite memory was the team being state runner-up my first year. I started playing hockey in third grade. I want to give a special thanks to Kelly Camp for introducing me to

the sport. I played hockey from third grade to my senior year. Up until eighth grade I played house hockey in Bad Axe. In eighth grade I was offered a chance to play on the Snow Leopards Girls 19U travel hockey team. My favorite memory from the team was when we were the ADRAY State Champs against our biggest rival; the Midland Hornets. I played on the Snow Leopards until sophomore year, when we lost six seniors and the team folded. I want to give a special thanks to Marty Hembrough, Scott Bular, Lisa McManaman, and Larry Camp for making a huge impact on my life and not only teaching me about hockey, but teaching me many life skills. Plot twist; I finished out my junior and senior year on the Midland Hornets 19U girls travel hockey team, the team that was once my rival.

My junior year was pretty bumpy with getting second in almost every tournament. My senior year we won a few and lost a few championship games. Throughout the process, we had the total support of our principal, Mr. Hahn, as well as all of the office staff and teachers. They assisted with every problem we faced and put in plenty of extra work to make our productions happen. Mrs. Beagle would advertise our shows to each of her classes, and Mrs. Gruehn checked in with me about our progress and offered any help she could give. Mr. Beagle, Mr. Aikens, and Mrs. McBrayer asked me about the drama club almost every time I saw them. Though they may not know it, their support made all the difference in the world to me. Other schools might simply have dropped the program and turned down the idea of student directors, but USA allowed us to have this amazing opportunity.

Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School

While USA has given me many academic opportunities, some of the most rewarding opportunities I was given took place outside the traditional classroom. At the end of my freshman year, I was selected to be our band’s drum major—a role I held for the next three years. This experience allowed me to expand my comfort zone and step in front of a group of my peers for the first time. In May of my sophomore year, the school sent me as a delegate to the Michigan Youth Leadership Conference. The skills and advice I received there pushed me toward the most important experience of my high school career: restarting our drama club. From seventh to ninth grade, I was heavily involved in our school’s drama program, but sadly our director moved to another district. A fellow student and I decided to take on the drama program on our own as student directors during my junior year. With the guidance of elementary school teacher Sherri Holland, we put on two successful shows during the 2018-2019 school year, and I directed two shows alone this year, although one has been postponed due to social Dear Huron Daily Tribune, USA schools has helped prepare me for life after high school in many ways.

In each year of high school, I have learned life lessons that I will never forget.

My ninth grade year taught me the most about life in general. It was a year full of challenging, yet necessary growth for me. Freshman year was the year I truly started to think and live for myself. I found out that I shouldn’t be doing sports or clubs to make other people happy. If I was going to do it, I knew that it should be in my own interest to do it.

Sophomore year wasn’t my best year either, but it was a lot better than the previous.

That year, I stopped playing baseball and I joined cross country. This was a big stepping stone for me because I knew that I would not succeed in Cross Country, but I gravitated towards the positive atmosphere that is seldom to find in other competitive sports. In the races, I was only dead last once, and came very close all the other times. People can talk about being humble all they want, but no

OvermycourseofmytimeatUnionvilleSebewaingAreaSchools,I have had the opportunity to be involved in over twelve extracurricular activities. Through these, I attained leadership abilities that I will utilize for the rest of my life. During my junior year of high school, I was fortunate enough to take the Nursing Careers class at the Tuscola Technology Center, where I quickly fell in love with the idea of working in health care. During my time at the Tech Center, I learned over 350 medical terms, human anatomy and physiology, and how to be a caring and compassionate Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Although I always knew I wanted to work in health care, I did not fully understand my passion for it until I was placed at the Tuscola Medical Care facility for my CNA clinical period. While I was there, the residents became my family and I truly understood the importance of health care. Not only do the workers influence the health of their patients, but their patients influence the hearts of their caregivers as well. I will forever treasure these precious moments that I experienced through the Nursing Careers program. For this

one truly knows what it means until they have intentionally set themselves up for failure.

In my Junior year, I learned that social status while you are in high school will not matter once you leave, and may not even matter while you are there. It shouldn’t matter who you are friends with, as long as you are truly yourself around them.

Throughout my four years of high school at UnionvilleSebewaing Area, many ideals were instilled in me.

However, the three that I would like to emphasize on are responsibility, work ethic, and perseverance. Doing well in school was never something that came naturally to me- especially during my first couple of years in high school, I had to study often to receive a good grade on tests and assignments. When my friends would invite me to go out with them, most times I would have to turn them down because I had a test or quiz coming up that I knew I wouldn’t do well on unless I studied for it. Other than education, athletics played a great part in teaching me work ethic and perseverance. During my time at USA, I played basketball and softball. Some days I would be exhausted from a long day of school, and the only thing that sounded like a good idea was to go home and relax.

However, I knew that there was a basketball court or a softball diamond waiting for me, and a team that I couldn’t let down. Pushing through the difficult days made the other days seem much easier, and I have athletics to thank for that. While there isn’t enough words to thank every staff member or coach at USA that impacted me in

I came to terms with my SAT score, my AP score, and anything else that bothered me because I know that I worked hard to get where I am today. In my time in high school, I have seen people get awards they don’t deserve and I have seen people get looked over time and time again.

Rather than looking to honors, awards, or scores to validate yourself, you should look at where you started and where you are now.

In high school, treasure the good days, learn from your mistakes, and remember that life is what you make of it.

As I walked out of school on March 13th, never did I ever expect that to be my last day. Even though my days were cut short, I experienced all the highlights of being a USA Patriot. During my volleyball career, as a team we won Districts 4 years in a row, went to Regionals 3 times and even madean appearance at a State Finals game in 2018. Not only am I proud to be a patriot, but I am also honored to be a part of such a wonderful community. I also have Mr. Ioannidis to thank for my ability to write papers in perfect MLA format, always with exact one-inch margins. Although he was strict with our class, I always wanted to make sure I did well because he had high expectations for me. I even took psychology this year just so that I could experience the light atmosphere of his classroom one last time. I will miss both of them greatly, and will always be thankful for their contributions to making me the student and person that I am now. Without the coaches and staff at UnionvilleSebewaing Area Schools,I wouldn’t be writing this letter now as a Senior Scholar- and I am grateful for the lessons that were taught to me by each and every one of them.

A Letter To High School Seniors On Graduation Day The rest of your life begins today.

Dear High School Senior, Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for your whole life. You’ll wake up a little earlier than usual, brush your teeth and go downstairs for your last breakfast as a high school student. Your mom will look at you with tears running down her cheeks wondering how her baby grew up so quickly. Your friends will be texting your group message non-stop with words of disbelief, wondering where the time went. You guys made it to the day you’ve been counting down to all year long.

You’ll start to reminisce on things like your first pep rally and the dorky outfits you wore freshman year. You’ll laugh at things your old teachers did and remember the ones who left to teach somewhere else. You’ll wonder how the guys in your grade actually managed to grow up and laugh at how young you all looked when you had just begun. You’ll remember all of the football games you attended and consider how strange it will be seeing other people wearing your guy friends’ numbers when the Thanksgiving game rolls around. You’ll drive by the soccer field and think of all the blood, sweat and tears you gave to it over your high school career.

You’ll recall your first real kiss and joke about how upset you were when the first boy broke your heart. It’ll feel like yesterday when you walk through those doors for the final time and look around at all of the empty lockers. You’ll gather with your classmates together in the same place for the last time and think about how you’re all going to be in different places next year. You’ll be excited but nervous because in a few hours, life as you know it will change.

So before you sit down to hear the Valedictorian’s speech and walk the stage to receive your diploma, make sure you take the time to appreciate the memories you made in those halls. Thank your teachers, even the difficult ones, because when you’re sitting down in your first college class, you’ll feel grateful for the work they made you do. Thank your parents for supporting you. It’s not easy raising a teenager, but they did not give up on you regardless of how brutal puberty was.

Thank your friends. They’re the ones that got you through your first heartbreak and made sure that you were going to be okay. They listened to your complaints after a big fight with your mom, even if they thought you were wrong. They forgave you when you were wrong and understood your bad days. They stood up for you when you got yourself in a bad situation. They brought you coffee when you didn’t have time to get it yourself. They took you home when you couldn’t make it there alone. They celebrated your good news and helped you through the bad. They made you laugh uncontrollably and created memories that you’ll hold on to forever. They made you who you are today.

After you receive your diploma and throw your cap in the air, make the most of the time you have left with your high school friends before you all head off to college. You only have a few months before you’re sitting in a dorm room surrounded by unfamiliar faces.

Work, but don’t forget that memories last longer than money. Go to the beach, take lots of pictures, go out on Friday nights and enjoy the days that summer has to give. Trust me, college will be awesome, but you’ll never be the same person that you are today.
