“How to Build a Snowman” Publishing Contest For the second year in a row, the Huron Intermediate School District sponsored a publishing contest for second-grade students in the county in collaboration with the Huron Daily Tribune. Each child in Huron County took home a Snow and Ice-themed Family Exploration Pack full of fun activities to keep and do at home, including a blank book titled, “How to Build a Snowman” and a set of colored pencils. Children from across the county took on the challenge of writing an informational book about how to build a snowman. Marshall Kiehl earned First Place in the contest. Kiehl, a student in Mrs. Tracy Gordon’s class, smiled from ear to ear and his classmates cheered as he found out that he was the winner. He is the son of Holly Pineau and Ryan Kiehl. Marshall likes bike riding, basketball, Legos, and spaghetti. He received an art set and blank book in addition to the great honor of having his book published in the Huron Daily Tribune. “We at Laker Elementary are proud of Marshall and all the children who submitted books,” said Laker Elementary Principal Jill VerBerg. In addition, a second-place prize was given to Aubrey Smith, a student at Verona Mills School. Her parents are Dave and Wendy Smith and her teacher is Mrs. Amy Schweitzer. Aubrey enjoys coloring and swimming. The third place prize went to Cammie Pleiness, a student in Mrs. Katie Eskau’s class at Zion Lutheran School. Her parents are Dean and Amanda Pleiness. Her favorite activities include gymnastics, dance, school, sewing, and reading. Cammie also loves tacos. All students who submitted books to the contest will receive a chapter book. Writing is an important life skill, and it’s one of the hardest to master. “Many adults remember writing stories in school, but there is also great value in learning to write other types
of text,” said Karen Currie, director of general education at the HISD. “So many careers require communicating information in a written form, while few require story writing. We want to help students write a variety of texts. A ‘how to’ book is one of the first informational texts students learn to write. We were thrilled to have so many children submit ‘How to Build a Snowman’ books to our contest.” The Snow and Ice packs also included science experiments such as making rock candy to learn about the states of matter (solid, gas, and liquid) and classifying snowflakes, a math game, a chapter book, 3-D goggles and a bathymetric map of Lake Huron, technology links, and an art activity. “This project strengthens the school to home partnership parents want to help their children but don’t always know what to do,” HISD Literacy Consultant Marilyn Peplinski said. “These packs provide families with the information and tools needed to support their child’s learning in a FUN way.” “We also hope to create an awareness with parents on the prevalence of science and technology in everyday life and the critical importance of creating a science literate community that understands and appreciates the value of science,” said HISD Science Consultant Scott Whipple. The project is supported by the General Education team at the Huron ISD.
