Agriculture Issues Contest L-R: Hannah Keim, Peyton Kuhn, Jackie Good, Tyler Hill, Alex Smith, Savannah Schulz, Maya Viers
Students present the pros and cons of their chosen agriculture issue for this contest. They then put together a 15 minute presentation which shows both sides of the issue. At the conclusion, they must answer 5 minutes of questions relating to their topic. Our team’s topic this year was Gal Safe or Gal Sorry. Inspired by Emily Smith’s Prepared Public speech from last year, this team took the concept and highlighted the risks and benefits of genetically modified pigs. These pigs have the Alpha Gal Sugar removed from the surface of their cells in order to allow individuals to consume pork products who otherwise would not be able to. This revolutionary
concept has opened the food, pharmaceutical and medical industries to new possibilities to benefit consumers. The group decided on a talk show format, as it had recently been in the news featuring the 1st in human heart transplant from a genetically modified pig. Team members include: Alex Smith as the host of “Agriculture Today”; Peyton Kuhn, Swine Specialist; Tyler Hill, Consumer with AGS; Hannah Keim, Vegan Naturalist; Maya Viers, Geneticist; Savannah Schulz, Pharmaceutical Rep; Jackie Good, Doctor at John Hopkins Hospital. Our team was named 2nd in the state!
Parliamentary Procedure The highest level of running effective meetings, students demonstrate over 12 abilities throughout their meeting, while solving a topic and providing debate related to their item of business. Students also demonstrate their knowledge through a written test, prior to delivering their presentation to a panel of judges. Our team placed 4th in the state!
