Sold Glen Carbon home to fledgling beekeepers

By Scott Marion Hearst Newspapers EDWARDSVILLE — Beekeeping has been a sweet hobby for Tom Simpson, but he’s decided it’s time to cut back.

Simpson has been a beekeeper for 11 years and sells his own honey to local businesses through his own business, Bethel Refuge Apiary.

But Simpson is downsizing his apiary of 80 to 100 hives as he and his wife, Gay, prepare to move from Edwardsville to Bull Shoals, Arkansas.

“I’m still undecided about how many hives I’ll have in Arkansas, but I hope to take some with me,” said Simpson, who was named Beekeeper of the Year by the Illinois State Beekeepers Association in 2018. “If not, then I’ll just have to start fresh in the spring. We only have one acre compared to the 14 acres we have here.

“When I get to Arkansas, the flow of the nectar will almost be over, so I’ll have to feed

my bees for them to survive. Bees do well on refined sugar and it actually stimulates the queen and helps her to produce more brood.”

Simpson, a retired union boilermaker and a member of Belleville Local 363, had been retired for a year or two when he got an email about top bar hives.

As it turned out, the message set him on the path to becoming a beekeeper.

“Top bar hives are not the normal hive that most beekeepers use. We use a 10-frame Langstroth hive (the most common hive used in North America),” said Simpson, who recently sold his house to a Glen Carbon couple that recently got into beekeeping. “The top bar is pretty much the same design as the Langstroth except it didn’t have removable frames and it didn’t have the bee space.

“Bee space is 3/8 of an inch — anything more, they build comb on it and anything less and the bees will fill with it propolis, which is a byproduct of tree sap. It has medicinal and

Once Simpson learned about beehives, he was hooked on the hobby and called a friend to help him make three hives.

“I had the hives before I knew anything about bees, so I did it backward,” said Simpson, who will be 70 in December. “I built the top bar hives and then I found out about Ray Chapman in Bunker Hill, who had been a beekeeper for 35 years. He’s a retired plumber and the ex-mayor of Bunker Hill.

“After much cajoling, I persuaded him to be my mentor and we’ve become fast friends. He’s the one who recommended me for Beekeeper of the Year.”

It wasn’t long before Simpson’s little hobby became a big one, and his collection of hives continued to grow.

“I started off with three hives with Ray and a week later, I bought another one,” Simpson said. “I asked him to help me hive a top bar hive because you have to persuade bees to accept your hive. The top bar isn’t the easiest hive to persuade bees to stay, so we reset the frames to fit and put the bees in there and they stayed.

“Bees won’t leave their brood, which is their babies. They’ll die before they leave the brood.”

Like many beekeepers, Simpson started to catch swarms and his bee yard started to grow.

The largest swarm he caught consisted of 50,000 to 60,000 bees, which is enough to produce five boxes of honey.

“We started to look for places to put bees and at one point I even advertised on Craig’s List about ‘looking for a place to park bees.’ You would be surprised how many people responded and told those people they would be rewarded with a portion of the harvest,” Simpson said.

“When it was all said and done, we had bees in O’Fallon, Marine, Prairietown, Moro and all over Edwardsville. It was running me ragged, so I started to move all my hives closer to home and I made a circumference all around

“A Quiet Place Part II” lives up to predecessor

I imagine that every time Hollywood sees an unexpected hit that there’s an executive in a dark paneled corner office somewhere who has Dylan Thomas running through his mind: “Rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light!”

How can we keep this good thing going? This exact question has found itself on the tip of my tongue as I ponder the concept of sequels. Sequels became fashionable in the ‘70s and have since grown like weeds. The horror slashers of the 1980s, bankable superstars of the ‘90s, and the dominating advent of franchise films in the 2000s have led us down a path where little is wholly new.

You’ve read me bemoan this fact at least every other week for years. But are sequels necessarily evil? Absolutely not.

They just rarely capture the magic of their older siblings and sometimes make me a little grumpy because of that. There are roughly three varieties of sequel and here’s the skinny on each.

You’ve got your direct sequels. Those are obvious and the great example I’ll share with you “A Quiet Place Part II.” Direct sequels continue with the same characters and maybe the same basic plot points as original features. They just take place a little further down the road.

Such as they are, direct sequels have subcategories that

have led us to the master stroke of the prequel (where “Star Wars,” I think, has done it best with “Rogue One”) and the immediate continuation where the action picks up exactly where the first movie stops. “A Quiet Place Part II” is an immediate continuation and that’s why it’s so good.

“The Deathly Hallows” does not qualify for this exercise because it is a single film split in two, entirely, as an audience-appeasing money grab. (Note: I concede that all sequels are money grabs.)

Then there are the spinoffs. This is a dicey prospect because often the best element of a great movie, like a breakout character, can’t stand alone under the glare of their own spotlight. For every “The Mummy,” there is “The Scorpion King.” We didn’t see any more of those pictures after 2002 (Note: I do not concede the existence of its four direct-tovideo sequels) and it took all the bulk of Dwayne Johnson’s shoulders to make him a star.

“The Minions,” “Wolverine” and “Creed” are some of the best spinoffs lately, but they always veer dangerously close to following into the franchise formula pit.

That leaves, obviously, the franchise formula. This has been the best way to generate tickets sales during my entire adult life. “Harry Potter” and “Middle Earth” were great and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is without peer.

But all franchises eventually get stale. Look no further than

the number of actors who have played James Bond for proof of this. Even Daniel Craig is on his way out. I’d be happy to never see another “Transformers” movie or “Terminator” sequel. We have not improved on those, no matter how well special effects have progressed.

Another tired trend? Remakes! And don’t get me started on installments that come out 20-plus years later. Why do I need to see Will Smith’s character’s kid in an updated “Independence Day”? Or that weird kitsch that was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”? (Note: “Top Gun: Maverick” releases at Thanksgiving and I’ll be the first hypocrite in line.).

I didn’t leave myself a lot of room to tell you about “A Quiet Place Part II.” The Abbott family’s surviving members (Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds) pick up after the explosive conclusion to the first movie and hike from their remote farm to meet up with a friend (Cillian Murphy) for protection. Daughter Regan decides to use her hearing aid’s feedback to stop the auditory-hunting aliens once and for all. It’s a thrill all the way through and features a great opening scene flashback to the first day of the invasion. It’s absolutely worth a look.

“A Quiet Place Part II” runs 97 minutes and is rated PG-13 for terror, violence, and bloody/disturbing images. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

Pittsburgh museum returns lion attack display to public view

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh museum has returned to public view a 19th-century diorama that shows lions attacking a camel and its human rider, about a year after covering it up in response to complaints about how the courier was depicted.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Friday that a curtain around “Lion Attacking a Dromedary” at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History was removed a week ago and information was posted to address the controversy.

The paper said the decision was made by museum director Gretchen Baker.

X-rays have confirmed that the figure contains a human skull and jaw, presenting an ethical problem for the museum, which does not know where those remains originated. The courier’s costume has been determined to be derived from at least five separate North African cultures.

A new sign tells museum patrons that the exhibit, which vividly depicts two lions attacking a camel and its knife-wielding rider, is popular but reinforces stereotypes.

“For the present, the museum is keeping the diorama on display,” the sign reads. “We want to engage with visitors, staff, and community members to listen and learn from you as we consider the future of this diorama.”

Baker told the paper the curtains “were more harmful than not having them up at all,” and in hindsight covering the exhibit may not have been the right approach.

When a visual barrier was installed in late June 2020, the museum’s interim director at the time, Stephen Tonsor, said some people of color had complained about seeing the image of a courier being attacked in a prominent spot in the facility.

It was covered for three months, and since September visitors have had to step behind a curtain to see it.

The diorama was built by French naturalist and taxidermist Edouard Verreaux and his brother, Jules, for the 1867 Paris Exposition.

It has been at the Carnegie since 1899.

Planned communities designed with lifestyle in mind

People move for many reasons, including a desire to be closer to family or after accepting a job offer. Last year many were spurred by a “you only live once” mentality as life and the world as we knew it changed. As people consider where to move, master planned communities are garnering more and more attention.

The National Association of Realtors reported that, starting in March 2020, one in three adults substituted some or all of their typical work for telework, compared to one in 20 who worked remotely before the pandemic. The uptick of remote work made many people consider moving. North American Moving Services indicated that Illinois, New York, California, New Jersey, and Maryland are the top states people have been leaving, while Idaho, Arizona, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina have welcomed the most new residents.

While master planned communities once were considered realms for retirees, such areas also can be great for families, and not all MPCs are age-restricted. Many buyers are attracted to these homes because of the sense of community fostered by living in close proximity to neighbors and sharing a number of exclusive amenities. According to Ideal Living magazine, many people flock to MPCs for social outreach. MPCs often have events for residents, including farmer’s markets, food truck nights, concerts, and other community gatherings

within the communities. Furthermore, MPCs often are built around golf courses, water parks, nature paths, and other features that physically connect the residents to one another in unique ways.

According to the financial information resource The Motley Fool, MPCs have more in common with small cities than traditional subdivisions.

These communities have extensive educational, recreational and commercial features. They often have their own school systems, shopping areas, fitness centers, and business districts. Some are gated; most require an entry pass to use facilities.

MPCs can be convenient for anyone who doesn’t want to travel far away from home for most of their daily needs.

Furthermore, thanks to conceptualizing and design, these communities continue to evolve to offer residents in demand services. For example, many builders in MPCs are including homes that feature designated spaces for home learning and remote working in their floor plans.

RCLCO Real Estate Advisors says home sales among their top-selling MPCs in 2020 in the United States were 20 percent higher than in 2019.

Communities that top the list are located in Florida, Nevada, Utah, Texas, and North Carolina.

Converted barns have been a longtime real estate trend in Connecticut

Bob Weingarten has lived in a 19th century barn for two decades.

He and his wife Karen were on the hunt for a historic house when Karen stumbled upon a converted barn in Westport. Weingarten was in Tokyo at the time.

“Karen fell in love with this house,” he said. “Come see this house,” she told him.

Their barn house was originally built in 1805 as part of the Couch Farm. “Mr. Couch bought a chaise (a single horse-drawn wagon), and he built this barn to house the chaise, a horse and other animals,” Weingarten, who is the house historian for the Westport Museum for History and Culture (formerly the Westport Historical Society) and a real estate agent, said. Couch also built a fireplace in the barn, which was converted into a home in 1975.

During the pandemic, stories of city dwellers buying and renovating old barns in the country have become more frequent. But in Connecticut, this is nothing new.

Connecticut’s developed landscape is dotted with residential and commercial structures in places where agriculture once dominated.

As communities began changing and becoming more industrialized, one by one, many of the state’s working farms fell dormant over the centuries.

Connecticut has more than 10,000 historic barns that vary widely in style, size, color and usage. Many of them, including some that are now dwellings, are included on the Connecticut Barns Trail, the first such trail in the country. The barn trail was established by Preservation Connecticut, which created a map and an app identifying the addresses of the barns in each of the state’s municipalities.

“There are barns that are as simple as could be, and there are barns that are the height of fanciful design,” according to the Preservation Connecticut website.

Some barns have been abandoned and left to deteriorate — towering hand-hewn beams humbled, hulking shells tumbling down on the farmland. Home & Lifestyles • Thursday, July 15, 2021 • 17 whose interest is in repurposing the past. Many preservationists, professionals and hobbyists, have taken their stewardship seriously, converting barns into residences.

The challenge of converting a barn into a residence rather than renovating and updating an antique house to suit a modern lifestyle is that barns, historically, didn’t have many windows or insulation.

“Normally a barn only has a wood exterior without any interior walls,” Weingarten said.

Barn boards are “all that separates you from the outside world,” added Christopher Wigren, deputy director of Preservation Connecticut (formerly the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation) in Hamden.

For his house, Weingarten said interior walls had to be created and sheet rocked. For those who may be considering a barn conversion, Weingarten suggests hiring an architect who specializes in historic renovation. They can help the owner plan how to subdivide the interior space, how many rooms to include and how to configure those rooms. They can also help determine whether or not to incorporate existing features into the floor plan or remove them. For example, he said, one barn conversion in Westport kept a horse stable, which to this day is part of the home’s living room.

“I don’t think it’s used for anything. It’s just there,” he said.

There is an enthusiasm and interest unique to barns, according to Wigren. He said preservation, a love of history and a reverence for the past are only some of many reasons why people reclaim barns and convert them into dwellings.

“Thrift, reusing a building that exists, not letting a building go to waste, recycling” are all reasons, he said.

Then there is the visual or aesthetic appeal of barns, which have wide-ranging styles and original purposes.

Drive down any number of Connecticut roadways and see examples of them: gambrel roof barns (the classic American barn style), English A-frame gable roof barns, Gothic barns, bank barns, corn cribs, carriage barns, monitor barns and polygonal or round barns. They were used to shelter livestock, store equipment and to protect crops including hay, grains, onions and tobacco.

By their very nature, barns have big, open spaces, thereby lending themselves perfectly to contemporary living and entertaining, which demands open floor plans and flexible usage of space.

“An open floor plan is a feature people are now looking for,” according to Weingarten.

Most converted barns have identifiable features including cathedral ceilings, exposed beams and barn doors.

“Many barns were constructed with stone foundations – basement walls. Mine has eight-foot high, three-feet wide stone walls all around the house,” Weingarten said.

Here in Connecticut, there are barns that have been relocated, moved from one address to another by being rolled on logs or by using more modern techniques.

Other barns here in Connecticut, Vermont and other states have been dismantled, transported to a new parcel and reconstructed on the new site.

Those who are considering adaptive re-use of a barn as a home can visit the Preservation Connecticut website, which has a number of resources for owners of historic structures.

“I love the connection to the past. It makes me feel a part of history because you’re taking care of it, maintaining it,” Wigren said, hoping historic houses and barns will appeal to people in the future.

Safety tips for grilling season

People have been cooking meals over open flames since the discovery of fire. Even today, when there are so many ways to cook a meal, many still insist there’s nothing better than the taste of food cooked on the grill.

The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, which tracks industry trends, points out that one-third of consumers plan to use their grill or smoker more often this year. Even though grilling is widely associated with summer, a growing number of people are embracing year-round grilling. HPBA’s CEO Jack Goldman has said, “Barbecuing is no longer just a pastime, but an integral part of the North American lifestyle.”

Seven in 10 adults in the United States and eight out of 10 in Canada own a grill or smoker. With so many people firing up their grills, it’s important to recognize the importance of grilling safety. Each year an average of 8,900 home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all injuries involving

grills are due to thermal burns, advises the National Fire Protection Association. Here’s how to stay safe.

• Only grill outside. Propane and charcoal barbecue grills should only be used outdoors. Grills should be placed well away from the home. Keep grills away from deck railings, eaves, overhangs, and tree branches.

• Keep the grill clean. Thoroughly clean the grill prior to first use, and keep it tidy all year long. Grease or fat buildup can ignite and cause a fire.

• Always attend the grill. Grill distraction-free and keep an eye on the food being cooked. Simply stepping away for a few moments can lead to a fire or accident.

• Start fires safely. Charcoal grills and gas grills may be lit using electronic starters that do not require fire. If using starter fluid, only do so on charcoal, and do not add more fluid or other flammable liquids after the fire has ignited.

• Check for gas leaks. Whether the gas grill is hooked up to a propane tank or the natural gas supply of a home, ensure that the hoses or tanks are not leaking. Apply a light soapand-water solution to hoses to see if they bubble from leaking gas.

• Keep baking soda nearby. Baking soda can control grease fires, but it’s also helpful to have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand on hand for other types of fires.

• Watch children and pets. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from grilling areas.

• Wait for the grill and coals to cool. Practice safety around the grill until all coals are cool and the grill is no longer hot to the touch. Only then should the grill be moved or relocated.

Grilling is a passion that is enjoyed throughout much of the year. Safely cook outdoors by heeding safety guidelines.

Cleveland-Heath restaurant in Edwardsville is among the local clients for Bethel Refuge Apiary, and it uses Simpson’s honey for drinks, honey butter and other recipes. Other businesses that sell his honey include Green Earth Grocery and Joe’s Market Basket in Edwardsville Kelly’s Meat Market in Troy and DK’s Market in Hamel.

“We started getting 1,800 pounds of honey a year as long ago as eight years ago,” Simpson said. “Our best year was 4,000 pounds or just short of two tons. The average for us is about 2,800 pounds.

“We have a lot of regular customers, but when we move to Arkansas, some of the people that we know or have mentored should be able to supply those places.”

To some of the people he works with in the beekeeping community, Simpson is known as the “Bee Whisperer” for his ability to get the most out of his hives.

“I don’t know about that, but I tell them I’m the other Fat Bee Man,” Simpson said, laughing. “There is actually a pretty well-known beekeeper who is called the Fat Bee Man and he has a big following on the internet. The average beekeeper is 60, so we work hard to try to interest young people in doing it.”

While Simpson may be officially retired, bee-

keeping on the scale that he does is essentially a job unto itself. He typically spends several hours a day working on various bee-related chores.

“My wife has taken over cutting the grass and I do the beekeeping and she helps me with it too, especially when we’re harvesting honey,” Simpson said. “I get a lot of help from people that I teach about beekeeping. I get to mentor them, and they do some of the heavier work or we share it.

“I get up sometimes at 4 a.m. and if I’m selling a hive, people want to get all the bees.

You have to close up the hive before the bees start going out and they start going out before dawn.”

The Simpsons are members of the St. Clair Beekeepers Association, which covers Madison County as well as St. Clair County.

“I’ve been fortunate to help out with a beginners’ class that they offer,” Simpson said.

“My segment was about swarms, nucleus hives and packaged bees, any way that you produce a hive.”

Simpson and his wife had been planning the move to Bull Shoals for some time now, but the timetable sped up thanks to Simpson’s online beekeeping connections.

“I advertise frequently on our club website asking if anyone would like some experience in beekeeping and I mentioned that I was setting up ‘nucs’ (nucleus hives) and putting them on sale.

One lady said she would like to come out and she said ‘I love your house. Is it for sale?’ I told her it wasn’t on sale yet, but she said not to sell it because she wanted it. She and her husband have helped to pack us, and they’ve earned three hives for doing that.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more people have taken up beekeeping as a hobby, partly because they are spending more time at home.

For Simpson, that’s the rare piece of good news to come out of a bad situation.

“Bees are very social, not just within their own species, but they can be very social with you,” Simpson said. “They get to know you personally, and whoever thought you would have a relationship with a bug? They know your smell and they know your actions.

“If you have the right location, bees can support your hobby, and you can break even or produce a profit. We pay our real estate taxes every year with our beekeeping.”

Backstreet Boys back in Las Vegas for a Christmas residency

NEW YORK (AP) — Everybody, Backstreet’s back — in Vegas.

The pioneering boy band is returning to the Las Vegas Strip with “A Very Backstreet Christmas Party,” a series of 12 holiday shows at the Planet Hollywood resort this November and December.

The band will be playing the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino from Nov. 11-Dec. 23. That’s the same place where they created the residency “Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life” from 2017 to 2018. Tickets start at $89.

The current line-up of the band includes Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson. Tickets go on sale July 16 with earlier access for fan

club members.

The Backstreet Boys formed in 1993 and are best known for such hits as “I Want It That Way,” “As Long as You Love Me” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”

Other music acts have done residencies in Sin City, including Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey, Calvin Harris, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Aeromsith, Boyz II Men, Pitbull, Gwen Stefani and Shania Twain.

‘The Crown,’ ‘Mandalorian’ top Emmy nominations with 24 each

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Crown” tied with “The Mandalorian” for the most Emmy nominations Tuesday with 24 apiece, but the Marvel universe also got bragging rights with runner-up “WandaVision.”

The nominations reinforced the rapid rise of streaming, with the top-nominated scripted shows on services that largely emerged in the past two years. In the top three categories — drama, comedy and limited series — only the NBC show “This Is Us” and ABC’s “black-ish” snagged nominations.

In a pandemic year in which housebound Americans relied more than ever on television for distraction, TV academy voters recognized a varied mix of storytelling and a diverse group of actors and creators.

One example: Mj Rodriguez of “Pose” is the first trans woman to be nominated in a lead acting category. The show also earned a best drama series nod.

Netflix’s “The Crown” received its fourth nomination for

best series, and is likely the streaming service’s best chance to win its first-ever top series trophy. The British royal drama moved closer to contemporary events with its version of the courtship and rocky marriage of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, played by Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin.

O’Connor and Corrin received lead drama acting nods, as did the series’ Olivia Colman for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, with a supporting bid to Gillian Anderson for her performance as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The showings by “The Mandalorian,” an extension of the “Star Wars” franchise, and the inventive “WandaVison” featuring the Marvel characters Wanda and Vision, put the series in the ranks of past sci-fi and fantasy Emmy favorites “Game of Thrones” and “Lost.”

The frontrunner on the comedy side is the good-hearted “Ted Lasso,” about a middling American football coach imported to England to handle a soccer team. The Apple TV+ series received 20 nominations, including for top comedy, star Jason Sudeikis and six cast members.

“Hacks,” starring Jean Smart as a stand-up comedian who

resists getting aged out of Las Vegas and life, was next with 15 nods, including a lead actor award for Smart and a supporting bid for Hannah Einbinder.

Smart, who some have said is enjoying a career “Jeannaisance,” earned a second nomination for her supporting role in the limited series “Mare of Easttown.”

Illinois adopts CDC COVID guidelines for schools

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on Friday announced it is fully adopting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in Kindergarten (K)-12 Schools released today.

“Our goal is to protect the health of students, teachers, and staff so that in-person learning can resume as safely as possible,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “The CDC is right: vaccination is the best preventive strategy.

As school board members, parents, teachers and superintendents plan for a return to in-person learning in the fall, we strongly encourage those who are not vaccinated to continue to mask,” she said. “IDPH is proud to fully adopt school guidance issued by CDC, which is based on the latest scientific information about COVID-19.”

The updated school guidance now aligns with guidance for fully vaccinated people, which allows activities to resume

for fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask except where required by federal, state, and local rules and regulations.

Major elements of the updated guidance include: • Masks should be worn indoors by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not • CDC recommends schools maintain at least 3 feet of physical distance between students within classrooms, combined with indoor mask wearing by people who are not fully vaccinated, to reduce transmission risk. When it is not possible to maintain a physical distance of at least 3 feet, such as when schools cannot fully re-open while maintaining these distances, it is especially important to layer multiple other prevention strategies, such as indoor masking.

SKOKIE — Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed HB 376, the Teaching Equitable Asian American History Act, into law, making Illinois the first state in the nation to require a unit of Asian American history be taught in public schools.

The measure will ensure every high school graduate in Illinois will learn about Asian American history as well as the contributions and traditions of the Asian AThe legislation builds on the efforts to ensure content taught in Illinois classrooms reflects the diversity of the people who call Illinois home.

“Today, we are reaffirming our commitment to creating more inclusive school environments,” said Pritzker. “We are setting a new standard for what it means to truly reckon with our history. It’s a new standard that helps us understand one another, and, ultimately, to move ourselves closer to the nation of our ideals.”

Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, every public elementary school and high school must include a unit of instruction on the events of Asian American His-

tory, including the history of Asian Americans in Illinois and the Midwest.

The bill specifies the curriculum should include: • The contributions of Asian Americans toward advancing civil rights from the 19th century onward • The contributions made by individual Asian Americans in government, arts, humanities, and sciences • The contributions of Asian American communities to the economic, cultural, social, and political development of the United States.

The state will not require or designate a specific curriculum for school districts. The Illinois State Board of Education is authorized to make instructional materials available to all school boards; however, each school board will determine the minimum amount of instructional time that qualifies as a unit of instruction as stated in the bill.

The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen I. Ayala issued the following declaration mandating in-person learning with limited exceptions: Beginning with the 2021-22 school year, all schools must resume fully in-person learning for all student attendance days, provided that, pursuant to 105 ILCS 5/10-30 and 105 ILCS 5/34-18.66, remote instruction be made available for students who have not received a COVID-19 vac-

cine or who are not eligible for a COVID19 vaccine, only while they are under quarantine consistent with guidance or requirements from a local public health department or the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“All our students deserve to return safely in-person to schools this fall,” said Dr. Ayala. “With vaccination rates continually rising and unprecedented federal funding to support safe in-person learning, and mitigations such as contact tracing and increased ventilation in place in schools, we are fully confident in the safety of in-person learning this fall. We look forward to a great school year and to the energy of Illinois’ young minds once again filling our school buildings.”

How school shopping has changed in the pandemic era Back-to-school shopping sales have long been indicators that the summer vacation season is coming to a close. Students and their parents may visit area stores or browse online looking for items to make the coming school year a success. Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience.

Though hundreds of millions of adults and adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends.

• A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years. It’s likely that school shoppers will turn to the internet for their supplies, which means local brick and mortar shops should increase their web presence and digital shopping capabilities to reach online shoppers. This includes omnichannel fulfillment, such as buy online and pickup in store (BOPIS) options.

• Reassessment of what’s essential: The pandemic may have changed which items consumers consider essential. For example, clothing became

less significant as a greater number of students were enrolled in virtual learning. Back-to-school shoppers may purchase less clothing and focus more on tech items, among others.

• Traditional supplies become less necessary: In 2020, Deloitte forecasted that a shift in preferences and intentions would result in parents buying fewer traditional supplies, such as notebooks and office supplies, as they chose to invest in digital resources to supplement children’s education.

That shift likely will continue into this school year.

• Support for local retailers: Community spirit grew in the early days of the pandemic and continues now. Many people prefer to shop in locally owned stores. Eighty percent of customers surveyed feel more or as connected to their communities, according to the business industry consultant company Accenture.

• Customers are trying new brands and products: Shoppers are trying new products out of curiosity as well as necessity. Back-to-school shopping may include novel brands and other items that may not have been readily purchased in years past.

Back-to-school shopping may continue to look a bit different than in previous years, spawning trends that may ultimately become the new normal.

When it’s time to call in a tutor

Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades.

A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school

students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior. But students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years.

• Learning disorder: Certain students learn differently from others due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disorder.

A child who is struggling with reading, phonics, spelling, and writing may have dyslexia, according to the tutoring experts at Dyslexia Practitioner NJ. Tutors who specialize in learning disorders can assess and address learning conflicts and tailor instructions in ways that can help students overcome those challenges.

• Students “shut down” or say they “hate” school: Disinterest in school or expressions of hating going to school may be indicative of academic struggles in the classroom, says the Princeton Review.

How to support students interested in the arts

Schools are diverse communities in which people from all walks of life gather to teach, learn and pursue an assortment of interests and passions. Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theater, and, of course, academics.

Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent.

Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved performance in the classroom, Americans for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests.

• Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education.

• Make art a part of life at home. Americans for the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home. Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other arts-based interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be.

• Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children.

Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.

When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States, modern farmhouse is the most favored house style.

The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor.

The modern farmhouse style was the most popular choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography.

Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”

Dessert 2.0!

Saving room for dessert is not that easy to do.

But as I said not long ago --- that doesn’t stop me from having it. I just wait awhile.

Even though I talked about desserts from a few different restaurants earlier this spring, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to let you in on a well-kept secret: Applebee’s has some of the best desserts around.

Maybe it’s not a secret; maybe it was just me who was in the dark, but Vicki when I got a load of the “Blondie,” I was hooked. Cinnamon apples surBennington round a butter pecan brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream, sizzled and drizzled with caramel sauce and a sprinkle of candied pecans.

That is good stuff!

My husband tried the “Triple Chocolate Meltdown,” described as warm, rich, fudge-filled chocolate cake drizzled with hot fudge and served with vanilla ice cream.

If you like chocolate, you will love this one.

Of course, we sampled back and forth so we got a taste of both. My vote for the winner stays with the “Blondie,” but I wouldn’t turn down the chocolate meltdown either.

The Applebee’s Grill and Bar in Glen Carbon served the desserts up right away – quick and easy. A couple of other options are the “Brownie Bite” or the “Blue Ribbon Brownie” with ice cream and hot fudge. There are some smaller options, too, if you just want a little taste of something sweet. They come in a little glass and look so pretty. Try the chocolate mousse shooter or the strawberry cheesecake or key lime pie shooter.

Speaking of key lime pie – some friends of ours were talking about a past trip to the Florida Keys when they were on the hunt for the perfect key lime pie.

If you can’t make it down that far south this summer, here’s a key lime pie recipe I found that I think sounds like it might get some high marks if it tastes as good as it sounds.

I haven’t tried it yet, but that’s next on my list for this week – I have to have a good dessert for the weekend.

AUTHENTIC KEY LIME PIE Graham Cracker Crust 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup sugar 7 tablespoons butter

Stir graham cracker crumbs and sugar together in a large bowl. Melt the butter, and pour over crumbs, stirring until well coated. Press mixture into the bottom and sides of pie pan.

Bake in preheated 350 F oven for 10 minutes. Cool before filling.

Key Lime Filling 1/2 cup key lime juice; fresh squeezed or bottled (The flavor of key limes is more intense than regular limes. The others will work, but the flavor will be a little more subtle.)

3 teaspoons lime zest 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 4 egg yolks Whisk together the lime juice, lime zest, sweetened condensed milk and egg yolks in a bowl.

Pour into crust and bake for 15 to 16 minutes in a 350 F oven. The center will still be jiggly, but will continue to set as it cools. Let cool completely, then place in refrigerator for at least an hour before serving. Top with whipped cream and garnish with lime slices and lime zest.

Review: New insight into the complex character of Hoover

“The Director: My Years Assisting J. Edgar Hoover,” by Paul Letersky with Gordon Dillow (Scribner) J. Edgar Hoover’s life has been picked apart in other books; Paul Letersky and Gordon Dillow deliver insight that only could be obtained from Letersky’s vantage point as Hoover’s personal assistant for two years.

“The Director: My Years Assisting J. Edgar Hoover” is actually a pair of books in one; the first half Letersky’s experience as Hoover’s assistant; the second covers Letersky’s years as a field agent, first in Cincinnati and then Alexandria, Virginia.

Letersky offers less a historical breakthrough than finer brushstrokes on an American icon, whom the author describes as kind, courteous, formal, thoughtful, fearless, occasionally funny, a perfect gentleman and a devout patriot. He also could be vindictive, closed-minded, hypocritical and a holder of eternal grudges who sincerely thought he was serving his country.

In his later years, however, Hoover apparently was oblivious to ethical lapses such as bugging the Rev. Martin Luther King’s hotel rooms.

Hoover also emerges as petty, judgmental and sometimes bizarre. He didn’t want men with “pear-shaped” heads as agents and woe to the agent who added a few extra pounds.

More than anything, Hoover was that uniquely American character, the workaholic. His entire life was dedicated to the FBI, which he built into the world’s most respected law enforcement agency. Agents feared letters of censure from the boss; Hoover’s FBI allowed no room for error or forgiveness.

Hoover’s singular devotion to the FBI’s success and image made the bureau a tense, competitive place to work. Arrests, closed cases, the accuracy rate of typed pages ‚Äì everything was measured. “All men, even the best men, must be closely controlled and supervised at all times,” Letersky quotes Hoover as telling him.

He stayed too long and in later years needed an afternoon nap but other than attending horse races, he had little other life.

As for Hoover using his famed and feared “personal files” to pressure the eight presidents he worked for to allow him to stay; in Letersky’s telling, it was more the other way around — several presidents tried to lean on Hoover for political leverage.

The director usually resisted. Letersky says Hoover never joined a political party and never voted.

With Hoover’s death in 1972, many thought the mystery of what was in his personal files would be revealed. Their mere existence generated fear ‚Äì what secrets might those 30-some file drawers hold?

We can get some clues as to the contents from a file Letersky saw on The Monkees, the American pop group from the 1960s.

The file consisted of a few newspaper clips, cut and stored because an informant said the group was transmitting subliminal anti-war messages during their concerts.

This would have been impressive at many levels. The Monkees’ musical abilities were such that studio musicians recorded many of their songs for them.

And the rest of the files?

We will never know. After Hoover’s death, they were shredded by his long-time secretary, Helen Gandy. The job took two weeks.

Radio host Larry Elder enters California recall election

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD AP Political Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder entered California’s Sept. 14 recall election on Monday, bringing a well-known voice on the political right to a muddled Republican field trying to oust firstterm Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Elder, whose show is nationally syndicated, is a regular guest on Fox News. He’s dubbed the “sage from South Central” on his website, a reference to the area of Los Angeles where he grew up.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the 69-year-old attorney said he initially was reluctant to become a candidate in a state where Democrats hold a lopsided grip on power in Sacramento. Among supporters who encouraged him to run: fellow conservative radio host Dennis Prager.

Elder said he decided to enter his first campaign after witnessing California’s out-of-control homeless crisis, spiking crime rates, looming water and power shortages, and whipsaw coronavirus lockdowns.

“I have common sense. I have good judgment.

I’m born and raised here. I think I understand the state,” he said.

“I know it’s a long shot,” he added, referring to Newsom’s ability to raise unlimited funds.

But he said he was driven by a “fire in the belly to see if I can do something ... to move the nee-

dle in the right direction.”

Elder stands out as a Black man in a national GOP dominated by whites. He said that reality counters Newsom’s narrative that the recall is an “effort led by (former President Donald) Trump white nationalists.”

“Do I look like a white nationalist?” Elder asked.

Elder’s entry into the race immediately reorders a large GOP field that includes former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer; businessman John Cox, who was defeated by Newsom in 2018; state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley; reality TV personality and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner; and former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose. He also brings more celebrity sparkle to a race that has lacked a clear front-runner.

“I think this is a race between Gavin Newsom and me. I don’t think about the other candidates,” Elder said, arguing that his name recognition, outsider status and communication skills separate him from the crowd.

Newsom, a first-term Democrat and former San Francisco mayor, was elected in a 2018 landslide. The recall drive gained strength following school and business closures during the depths of the pandemic that upended life for millions of Californians and sent Newsom’s popularity tumbling.

The governor’s standing also suffered from a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal at the state unemployment agency and fallout after being

discovered dining out with friends and lobbyists at an exclusive restaurant last fall, while telling residents to stay home for safety.

Republican candidates have depicted Newsom as an incompetent fop whose bungled leadership inflicted unnecessary financial pain during the pandemic. Democrats have sought to frame the contest as driven by far-right extremists and Trump supporters.

More recently, a reopened economy amid falling coronavirus case numbers helped Newsom regain his footing, but large numbers of voters aren’t paying attention to the race. Democrats worry about the possibility of a weak turnout on their side.

Elder’s biography on the website for his radio show calls him “unafraid to take on liberals and the Black Lives Matter movement.” He calls for “returning to the bedrock Constitutional principles of limited government and maximum personal responsibility.”

During the interview, he talked of working his way through a disadvantaged high school in a historically Black neighborhood to get to Brown University, then law school. When he was bused for a semester to another district in Los Angeles, he was stunned by the difference in teaching and parental involvement.

When he told his mother about the difference in the schools, she cried and told him: “If your father and I had enough money, we could have put you in a better school, but we couldn’t.” He

is an advocate for school choice programs.

In a 2020 column, Elder advocated for Trump’s reelection, citing a strong economy and low unemployment numbers for Black workers.

He criticized Trump’s impeachment.

In a statement, Newsom campaign spokesman Dan Newman called Elder “another Trump supporter” competing for a share of the former president’s base of voters. Elder said he has long supported Republican presidential nominees, but the issue in the recall remains Newsom.

It’s not uncommon in California for residents to seek recalls, but they rarely get on the ballot — and even fewer succeed. A sitting governor has been ousted just once in the state, when unpopular Democrat Gray Davis was recalled in 2003 and replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In a recall election, voters will be asked two questions: First, should Newsom be removed?

And then, who should replace him? Voters will choose from a list of registered replacement candidates. However, the second votes only count if a majority votes yes on the first question.

Candidates have until July 16 to file papers to declare their candidacy. With dozens of candidates expected, it’s possible that a winner could top the field with as little as 20% or 30% of the vote. Republicans believe Elder’s presence in the race will help drive up support for the critical first question on the ballot.

Unopened Legend of Zelda game from 1987 sells for $870,000

DALLAS (AP) — An unopened copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda that was made in 1987 has sold at auction for $870,000.

Heritage Auctions in Dallas said the video game sold Friday.

The auction house said it was a rare version that was created during a limited production run that took place during a few months in late 1987. The Legend of Zelda is a popular fantasy adventure game that was first released in 1986.

“The Legend of Zelda marks the beginning of one of the most important sagas in gaming; its historical significance can’t be understated ... it is a true collector’s piece,” Valarie McLeckie, Heritage’s video game specialist, said in a statement.

In April, the auction house sold an unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. that was bought in 1986 and forgotten about in a desk drawer for $660,000.

The Weeknd and BTS hope to raise billions for Global Citizen

NEW YORK (AP) ‚Äî The Weeknd, BTS and Billie Eilish will take part in Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour event on Sept. 25 that’s intended to raise money and awareness to fight worldwide threats including COVID-19, climate change and extreme poverty.

Hugh Evans, CEO of Global Citizen, is hoping the event, timed to the United Nations General Assembly, will encourage governments, corporations and philanthropists to fund a billion COVID-19 vaccine doses by September, especially in Africa. The international advocacy group also hopes to raise $6 billion for famine relief efforts for the 41 million people worldwide who are estimated to be on the brink of starvation, as well as enough money to plant a billion trees to help counter climate change.

For anyone who questions whether these institutions will manage to generate more money to donate, Evans points to the current space race.

“As billionaires are leaping into space, we need to remind people that we’ve really only got one planet and we need to make sure that we that we actually care for it and for those who are on it,” Evans told the Associated Press. “This is something the ultra-highnet-worth community can solve the world’s problems right now.

“We’re literally talking about an investment which sounds big in comparison ‚Äî $6 billion to address the famine relief efforts across Africa. Honestly, Jeff Bezos could write that check tomorrow and it would be a percentage point in his total net worth. I’m all for people daring to dream, and may they dream even bigger, but let’s also dream about a world where the absolutely stupid social ills that currently still exist in the world are addressed by those who have the means to do so.”

Global Citizen Live — which will run the gamut from pop stars H.E.R., Lizzo, Lorde and Ed Sheeran to rockers Coldplay, Green Day, and Metallica and international artists from Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang to Angelique Kidjo and Femi Kuti — will take place on six continents. Live events are planned for Central Park in New York City, the Champ de Mars in Paris, as well as venues in London and Los Angeles. Performances and hosted segments will come from Sydney; Rio de Janeiro; Seoul, South Korea; and Lagos, Nigeria.

Like nearly all of the group’s events, Global Citizen Live will encourage millions of fans urge their governments or individual

corporations to donate or take actions to advance the group’s goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030. Evans said that goal has suffered setbacks because of COVID-19 and the economic stagnation that resulted from it, forcing 150 million people back into extreme poverty.

“It is very important to me to be a part of this historic event to spread awareness and encourage action toward helping the people of Ethiopia during this devastating humanitarian crisis they are faced with,” The Weeknd said in a statement. “It’ll be an honor to perform and help bring support to these citizens who are suffering so severely.”

Also set to participate are Adam Lambert, Burna Boy, Camila Cabello, Christine and the Queens, Davido, Demi Lovato, DJ Snake, Doja Cat, Duran Duran, Hugh Jackman & Deborra-lee Furness, Keith Urban, Shawn Mendes, The Lumineers, Tiwa Savage and Usher. Ticketing details and performances

for the individual cities, as well as additional artists, will be announced in August.

“The artist community is very selective about what they all rally around, and the sense that I’ve had is that there is this amazing appetite to be part of it,” Evans said.

The event has support from leaders around the world, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Evans said education issues will also be in the spotlight at the event, which hopes to get 4.5 million kids back to school learning by raising $400 million. Only one in three children globally can access remote learning.

And the number of children who have had their educations interrupted has grown by 50% since 2020.

“I always say that people care either about planetary concern or about social issues,” Evans said. “For September, we’re targeting

both.”

It’s an ambitious agenda. Evans said he is hopeful because of Global Citizen’s previous successes this year.

In May, the organization sponsored VAX Live, which generated more than 26 million COVID-19 vaccine doses and $302 million for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator initiative, which includes the World Health Organization’s COVAX program for more equitable distribution of vaccines. The event, which included appearances by President Joe Biden as well as the Duke of Sussex, helped raise the issue of vaccine sharing globally.

“I believe that VAX Live changed the dialogue and tangibly resulted in vaccines that will be shared,” Evans said. “Yes, $302 million is still a small amount of money compared to what we need to achieve. Our ambitions are much bigger for September. And that’s why we’re uniting the whole world for this.”
