Edwardsville businesses gaining worldwide impact

EDWARDSVILLE — A nondescript Madison County office building packs a powerful one-two-three punch felt around the world. Lineup Media Group (LMG) and Atomic 47 (A47) headquartered in Edwardsville are globally focused venture/growth holding companies with a portfolio of businesses. Operating under the same leadership, LMG and A47 are technically separate umbrellas. “When we started this, we had three areas we wanted to be involved in: media, financial technology (fintech) and healthcare,” said Kris Lakin, of Edwardsville, one of LMG’s founders. “That was kind of what brought us all together. “LMG is focused on the media side and A47 on financial technology and healthcare,” he said. “Like a producer in a movie, our goal is to combine strategy and vision with the best team, resources and relationships to create an effective ‘product,’ all while advancing a cohesive agenda for the entire group of companies.” Both LMG and A47 grew from Eudora Global founded by Edwardsville entrepreneur Jeff Cooper more than a decade ago. Under his leadership as chief executive officer, what began as an incubator for completely online businesses has grown to include offices in New York, Mexico City, Ho Chi Minh City and Astana in Kazakhstan. The group began as a startup for a single project: Ocho — Spanish for the number eight — the first completely licensed and regulated online casino in Mexico and Latin America. From Ocho grew ancillary companies to support it, such as the fintech firm ePlata that uses smartphone and computer apps in connection to the online casino. Mexico, like much of the developing world, has a massive population of unbanked or underbanked citizens with no access to the digital economy. So the ePlata mobile digital payments system was developed. “When we originally spun the group into what we’re doing now, we were working on the Ocho project,” said Lakin. “We started all this as a hybrid startup accelerator, in some ways similar to incubators or private equity in that we’re taking internal resources, or we’re going out and raising money

through traditional fundraising,” he said. “But it’s difficult to label because it truly is a unique model.” LMG and A47 fund startups, early-stage and emerging companies deemed to have high-growth potential or which have demonstrated high growth, much like venture capital firms. An example is Ultimate Gaming Championship (UGC), the esports company based in Edwardsville begun by Matt Jackson that joined under the LMG umbrella. UGC has been highly successful and gone on to partner with leaders in the gaming world such as Microsoft and LG Electronics for esports offering millions of dollars in prize money. Microsoft worked with UGC and

LMG to produce, execute and distribute pro-circuit gaming tournaments in locales such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, using UGC’s proprietary online esports platform that leverages tools such as artificial intelligence-based optical recognition technology to facilitate a turnkey tournament infrastructure. Lakin said LMG’s infrastructure provides UGC with data and statistics features not offered by competitors. “From the outside, the combination of media, fintech and healthcare may seem scattershot,” Lakin said. “But the sectors we chose were actually very intentional and the interconnectedness of the individual companies fosters a collaborative environment. “Most of our companies are of our own making; we actually created the

companies,” he noted. “UGC is one of only a few that was a standalone, independent business that we rolled into LMG through acquisition. Our model does not typically center around investing in, or acquiring, outside companies. “But esports was a sector that we really wanted to get involved with, because its global-growth trajectory is off the charts,” Lakin said. “Yet, esports is also a very niche world.” When UGC came to LMG several years ago, the esports startup already had an undeniable footprint in the esports’ space. “We saw it as a great addition to LMG’s mission,” Lakin said. Lakin said his association with Cooper goes back to when Lakin was 11 years old. Around 1993, when

Cooper was in law school, he coached Lakin on the Granite City Steelers hockey team. “So close to nine years ago, Jeff (Cooper) and a group of partners collaborated on a healthcare venture – CitizensRx, a pharmacy benefit management company similar to Express Scripts,” Lakin said. “CitizensRx had really grown. It exploded and thrived over the last eight or nine years. “The partnership did the original investment, grew the company, then sold pieces of it over time — primarily to private equity and venture-capital-type entities,” he said. “That model really worked, and we wanted to replicate it in other sectors.”

Kris Lakin, of Edwardsville, co-founder of Lineup Media Group pauses in the firm’s offices. The group stemmed from Edwardsville-based Eudora Global begun by entrepreneur Jeff Cooper, also of Edwardsville and chief executive officer of Lineup Media Group, and has expanded into online gaming, digital banking, podcasts and health care platforms. Singer with disability shines in Ali Stroker’s new kids book

By BROOKE LEFFERTS Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Broadway star Ali Stroker says she always felt like her “most powerful self” when onstage, and now as the co-author of a new book for kids, she’s trying to empower others. Stroker teamed up with her friend and middle grade author Stacy Davidowitz and set out to create a familiar character: a young girl in a wheelchair named Nat who wants to perform in a local musical. “The Chance to Fly” — published this week — was a way for the actor to share her own experiences as a person with a disability and big dreams. Stroker, who has used a wheelchair since a car accident paralyzed her when she was 2, says she wanted to help kids with disabilities recognize themselves in the book. Even before winning a Tony in 2019 for her role in the Broadway revival of “Oklahoma,” Stroker served as an example of a person who doesn’t let limitations prevent her from achieving her goals. She made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to win the award and dedicated it to all kids with disabilities waiting to be represented in theater. Stroker said she was driven to write “The Chance to Fly” because she didn’t have any stories like it to read when she was in middle school. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Stroker talked about the challenges of writing a story similar to her own, representing people with disabilities, and naming her wheelchair. AP: Nat loves musicals and performing. How did ) performing make you feel

at her age? Stroker: On stage, I felt like I was my most powerful self because people were looking at me and staring at me. But it wasn’t just because of my wheelchair and it was a safe place to be different kinds of people. For a long time, I felt like I had to be, you know, like happy and OK and inspirational for other people. And when I was on stage and I was playing a character who was going through something, I got to express all those other things that were living inside of me. Writing this book as well and going back to those really vulnerable, scary, first time moments was so healing. And I think teenage Ali was just really brave and really tough. And I feel so proud of where I am now. AP: Nat sometimes feels embarrassed about her wheelchair. Was it hard to write about that? Stroker: It was a challenge for me to go back to those moments. One of the ways I describe it is just like you feel like you’re like so hot and you feel like people are looking at you for the thing that you are most self-conscious of, and maybe the thing that you have the most shame about. And it’s just overwhelming. But I wanted to write it because whether you have a disability or you’re in a wheelchair or not, you have those self-conscious and really difficult moments in your life, especially as a teenager, when you just want to be like everybody else, but you’re not like everybody else. And the reason it needed to exist in this book is because I want young people to know that they’re not alone in feeling like that. AP: The adult directors

of the show cast Nat but tell her she doesn’t have to dance, which upsets her because doesn’t want special treatment. Why was that important to include? Stroker: What’s so beautiful about living with a disability is that your creativity to solve problems is so accessible. It’s so heightened because this is a part of your everyday life. Nat is really disappointed, but then she goes away and she shares with her friends, her peers what’s going on, and then they offer to help her and they are going to not wait for the adults to solve the problem, but they are going to come up with the answer. That’s an ideal situation when you can ask your home team, the people that you trust the most for help, and then you can come up with a creative solution. AP: There are more opportunities recently for stories about people with disabilities. Is that encouraging? Stroker: I really believe that one of the shifts that needs to happen is that actors with disabilities are cast in roles where the storyline is not about disability and that we are able to just exist in stories and have disabilities and have that not be the storyline. Because that’s one of the ways in which I believe some of the change can happen. I think that we are in a diversity movement, but oftentimes disability is not included in that movement because there is an opinion that in order for disability to be included, it has to be addressed. And I am here to say that you can cast somebody — like what happened with “Oklahoma.” I can play Ado Annie — my wheelchair is never

addressed in the entire show. And yet we get to live this experience with a character who has a disability and we get to watch it and we are there with it, but we don’t have to talk about it. AP: Nat names her wheelchair Peaches. Have you named your chairs? Stroker: It’s just this really beautiful way to personalize this thing. You know, my wheelchair is a part of my every moment, every day my wheelchair sits right next to my bed when I sleep. My wheelchair is my access to the world. And I like to have a good relationship with my chairs. And so a really fun way of doing that is for me to name them. And sometimes there are days that you just want to use those names instead of talking about your equipment. My last chair was Twilight Flake — that was her racing name. She had sparkles!

Pollinators are an important part of gardens

A thriving backyard garden requires homeowners to take steps to ensure the garden has the best environment in which to grow and thrive. The right tools and components, including trowels, rakes, soil, amendments, and fertilizer, can help gardeners create beautiful spaces. It’s also important that pollinators are made to feel welcome in the garden. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that one-third of all agricultural output depends on pollinators. The USDA notes that insects and other animal pollinators are vital to the production of healthy crops for food, fibers, edible oils, medicines, and other products. Pollinators also are essential for maintaining habitats and ecosystems that many wild animals rely on for food and shelter. The U.S. Forest Service says that, without pollinators, the human race and all of the earth’s terrestrial ecosystems would not survive. Pollination done the natural way often yields large, flavorful fruits. Pollinators are make-or-break components of large-scale agriculture, and they’re just as important in private home gardens. The Pollinator Partnership, an organization that works to protect pollinators and their habitats across North America, says

pollinators include bees, butterflies, beetles, birds, and bats. These animals travel from plant to plant carrying pollen on their bodies. The following are some ways to maintain healthy pollinator habitats. • Consider the soil and types of plants that will thrive in it before choosing what to plant. Fix drainage issues and plant with sunlight in mind. • Vary the colors and shapes of plants to attract a greater array of pollinators. Plant flowers close to vegetable gardens to attract pollinators. • Group plants together when planting to more effectively attract pollinators. • Select plants that flower at different times of the year so that nectar and pollen sources are available year-round. • Whenever possible, choose native plants. • Avoid the use of pesticides. • Provide a water source for pollinators, such as a shallow dish with stones half-submerged for perching. Pollinators are important for gardens, whether those gardens are commercial operations or small backyard plots. Allow pollinators to share spaces and be mindful of behaviors that can threaten their survival.

With so many home loan options available, it can be challenging for individuals to decide which one is the best for them. That is where Sue Cress and our entire friendly mortgage team comes into play to answer any of your questions and help guide your through the decision-making process. Some common differences between mortgages include the following: • FIXED-RATE VS. ADJUSTABLE RATE – A fixed rate mortgage locks in the same interest rate for the entire payment term, even if you’re paying across several decades. An adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) features an interest rate that changes over time, usually every year after an initial fixed period. • CONVENTIONAL VS. GOVERNMENT-INSURED – Conventional loans are not insured by the government and harder to secure. If you have sufficient credit, steady income, and a down payment, you’ll generally find interest rates attractive. It’s easier to qualify for a government-insured loan, but they are generally less generous when it comes to interest rates. You’ll also probably have to buy mortgage insurance with a government-insured loan. • CONFORMING VS. JUMBO – A conforming loan amount falls within maximum size limits set by two government-controlled corporations. A jumbo loan amount exceeds the maximum size limits set for a home loan. You’ll need excellent credit, a large down payment, and, in most cases, a willingness to pay higher interest rates for a jumbo loan.

Understanding the Mortgage Process

While the mortgage process can be extensive, our experienced mortgage lending team is here to assist every step of the way! • Get started with a pre-approval letter to assure real estate brokers and sellers that you are a qualified buyer. Learn the right ways to clean lawn and patio furniture

Once the days begin to grow a little bit longer and the numbers on the thermometer creep a tad higher, outdoor entertaining season is right around the corner. Homeowners may be anxious to once again return to the comforts of their backyards. However, their patio furniture may not be ready for lounging just yet. Some simple cleaning strategies make it easy to brighten outdoor furniture made of metal, glass, wood, and plastic. Before homeowners know it, their backyards will be ready for outdoor entertaining season. Proper storage Storing outdoor furniture during the colder months of the year is a great way to protect items from the elements. This may involve careful shrink-wrapping and keeping items outdoors, or by moving furniture indoors to a shed or garage. Cleaning the furniture one last time before storing it also can be handy. Remove stuck-on debris Inspect furniture and be prepared to remove any stuck-on debris, such as bird droppings, sticky food residue or even cobwebs and insect nests. Be sure to use a cleaning tool that is safe for the material you are cleaning. Test an inconspicuous area of the

furniture first to ensure your tools don’t damage the furniture. For example, many scrub brushes can scratch glass or aluminum. Make a thorough cleanser Clean stains off of furniture with a versatile cleanser. A mild cleaner can be made by mixing 1⁄2 cup baking soda with 1 gallon of warm water, according to the experts at Better Homes & Gardens. Regular dishwashing detergent also can be mixed with water, as it has a mild bleaching agent. This cleanser can be used on plastic resin furniture or metal furniture, which are popular patio furniture materials. Patio fabrics Check the cleaning instructions of outdoor fabrics, as there might be specific instructions on the tags. In some cases, fabric may be removed and washed in a washing machine on a gentle setting. A solution of dish soap and warm water also is a gentle way to clean outdoor fabrics. Once items are clean, HGTV advises applying a water-repellent fabric protector to minimize staining and maintenance. Strip or sand Wood furniture may need specialized care. If stains cannot be removed with a mild cleanser, then hard woods like teak can be

surface-sanded to restore items’ original look. Pressure washers can often do more harm than good to patio furniture, so it’s best to look for an alternative way to clean them. Usually a bit of elbow grease and a cleanser

is all that’s needed. Give the cleaning product time to work. Wipe down and dry the furniture thoroughly to prevent the growth of mildew.

Exploring different backyard structures

Designing an ideal backyard space requires forethought and an eye for style. Knowing which features to include in a yard often boils down to what homeowners want to achieve in the space. Will it be a relaxing oasis or a central entertaining focal point? People often look to various structures to add height and visual interest to outdoor spaces. Homeowners will likely come across structures like arbors, gazebos, pergolas, and even trellises as they wade through the variety of features they can incorporate into backyard plans. Each of these structures can add appeal, but they also can offer shelter from the sun and privacy when enjoying the yard. There are significant differences between each structure, so here’s an in-depth look at what sets them apart. • Arbor: An arbor is one of the more simple garden structures. It is usually a frame that is arched or square-cornered. Most homeowners use it as an entryway to a garden or even the front of the home. Those with green thumbs may cover the arbor with climbing and trailing plants. The Spruce says arbors date back to early Egyptian and Roman gardens and were used throughout Europe by the late 16th century. • Pergola: The words arbor and pergola

are often used interchangeably, but to suggest the two structures are the same would not be accurate. Pergola comes from the Italian word “pergula,” which means “projection.” Pergolas were once projected from exterior walls and supported on one side by pillars or columns. Today, arbors are usually freestanding units with two or four posts. Pergolas may be connected on one side to a home or another structure. Some are freestanding units supported by four posts. Pergolas tend to be larger and offer more privacy and shade than arbors. • Gazebo: Gazebos are more defined garden buildings, states the contractor referral site Network. Gazebos are freestanding units that can be built in various shapes. Some are octagonal, others are square. Like a pergola, a gazebo is supported by columns and may have low railings or built-in benches. Gazebos also may have a more solid roof than arbors or pergolas, providing sun and other weather protection. The roof may have added architectural appeal, like a cupola. • Trellis: A trellis is a simple, geometrically-shaped structure that provides a surface for climbing plants. A trellis also may support fruit-bearing trees. Trellis work may be used in conjunction with an arbor or pergola, or be

installed on fencing. Incorporating structures into backyard

designs can provide functionality and appeal.

Landmark’s landmark

I was scrolling through the local news last week when an item of interest crossed my browser page. At the onset of the pandemic last year, one of the first theatres to close in our region was the Tivoli over in the University City Loop area of St. Louis. After the Fabulous Fox and our own Wildey Theatre, this is of the last great movie palaces that St. Louis offers. It was originally built in 1924, but the current iteration is a thing of beauty reopened by Joe Edwards after a $2 million renovation in the mid-90s. I fell in love with it during my first visit, as best I can remember, in 2000 to see Christopher Nolan’s monumental picture “Memento”. It was one of my first great forays beyond my own neighborhood multiplex and reminded me of what the grandiosity of early cinema once was for Americans. Other than having seen “An Affair to Remember” at the Fox, this is the most romantic venue in which I’ve screened a movie. I’ve gone back many, many times over the years. They have a beautiful marquee with a majestic sign that sits to your left as you prepare to turn off of Skinker onto Delmar; look the other direction and you’ll see The Pageant mimicking the same style a block up to the right. Parking isn’t always convenient. The snacks are a little pretentious. But this Art Deco three-screen is the place for

me. Or it was. The larger part of my attraction to the Tivoli is that this is one of the few sites around that routinely shows only independent cinema, documentary films, and small-platform releases. This is the “art house” of our metroplex because of the lease operated by Landmark Theatres to run the place. That is their business model, after all. These types of movie have mass appeal; it’s just not to the same masses that appeals something like “The Avengers” or its franchise brethren. I fear this may all be about to change, however. Landmark has withdrawn from its lease and Edwards has recently sold the Tivoli to One Family Church, a tenant that has been holding Sunday services in the main auditorium for years. The press release indicates they plan to resume showing movies in the Fall, but I have my doubts that a church’s agenda will extend much beyond a slate of boom-sale titles or family brands. I wish them well and will be first in line to check out the new digs, but can it ever be the same? Fortunately for all of us, we still have Landmark doing business in town. They have long run the charming mall theatre at Plaza Frontenac. I will cop to frequently making

the hour drive to see movies that quite literally never have engagements anywhere else in our market. The concept of an ‘exclusive engagement’ was of paramount to the success of exhibition back in the days when theatres were run by the same studios that made the movies. The issue is a minor marketing move now, but one that still manages to land when buzzy, word-of-mouth motion pictures pack a punch. This no-frills walk-up next to Neiman Marcus is where I saw most of this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best International Feature (where I suspect “Quo Vadis, Aida?” will bring a win for Bosnia and Herzegovina) and short subject (the animated “If Anything Happens I Love You” had the whole house in tears). I’m going again tonight because we are in the throes of Oscar Quest 2020, are we not? I’ve seen forty of the fifty-six nominees and this is my last column before Oscar Night on April 25th. Take a peek for yourself. A lot of these wonderful films can still be found in theatres or on Netflix quite easily. I watched two on YouTube last week and found another on a new streamer called Pluto TV (it was free and looks promising). My vote is cast for “Nomadland” in the Best Picture race. I hope you love it, too.

Food For Thought… with Vicki Bennington

A cherry on top!

I am a dessert girl, no doubt about it. However, I don’t necessarily like to have it right after dinner. It’s always better after waiting a little bit, so getting dessert “to go” is sometimes the best option. Buffalo Wild Wings in Edwardsville is one of those places that doesn’t seem like a dessert-type of restaurant. But … even though after chowing down on a stack of wings or sampling an array of appetizers, you may not feel like there’s any room left for dessert, you can order it for Vicki later. Bennington The chocolate fudge cake is chocolate on top of chocolate, and then add some chocolate sauce. If you eat in house, you get a big scoop of vanilla ice cream with more chocolate sauce, taking it home was still a real treat – and it definitely stood on its own. I added a dollop of whipped cream just for fun. The New York-style cheesecake was also a great choice on a recent visit, and a slathering of caramel sauce made it extra decadent. They provided a little side of chocolate sauce that I poured over the top. The next time I try out Buffalo Wild Wings, I decided I will have to leave room for the loaded ice cream, which wouldn’t travel very well. It sounds particularly interesting with the tortilla chips that stand alongside vanilla ice cream with chocolate, caramel and cinnamon-sugar.

Edwardsville’s Chicken Salad Chick has a nice little cookie that comes with most orders, but if you are in the mood to satisfy your sweet tooth a little bit more, the pretty and colorful buttercream frosted flower cookie delivers that extra sweetness, and they are handmade daily, so you know they are fresh. Shivers Frozen Custard in Godfrey is one of our favorites. Of course, that’s always an “after-dinner” run, so you know you have plenty of room when you go. The pièce de résistance that has me in a delicious rut right now is the “Penguin Delight” sundae, with hot fudge, marshmallow and nuts, and my favorite – a cherry on top. That makes everything better, right? And the custard is freshly made every hour. Now that’s fresh. In case any of you remember, about a year ago, I tried making my first cheesecake from scratch. I made a few mistakes (as you may recall), and I vowed at the time, that I would give it another go – having learned from my mistakes. So, I did. Here’s the recipe one more time, and I definitely think it looked and tasted better than the first. Maybe practice does make perfect. That doesn’t mean I think I made the perfect cheesecake – yet. But practice more, I will. The crust was not as hard this time. I made sure not to overdo it on the butter and didn’t press it down as hard as I did the first time when forming the crust. Second, I let the cream cheese sit out much longer, so it was super soft, which made beating the mixture easier, thus, it

Buffalo Wild Wings cheesecake with chocolate sauce (Photos by Vicki Bennington)

came out smoother. I kept it plain, so the true flavor of the recipe would come out. All in all, I think it was a success story. I’m sure there are other basic cheesecake recipes, but I wanted to try the same one that I tried the first time, to see if I could do better. Here it is again. Please let me know of any tweaks or tips that are perhaps learned with more experience in cheesecake making. Abby’s Cheesecake Servings: 16 Crust: 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup butter, melted (1 stick) 1/3 cup powdered sugar Cheesecake Filling: 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 4 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 pint dairy sour cream (at room temperature) 1 (21-ounce) can prepared cherry, blueberry or strawberry pie filling (if desired)

Heat oven to 350 F. Combine graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar and melted butter. Press into bottom of 8- or 9-inch springform pan. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, eggs, sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour mixture over prepared crust. Bake for about 50 minutes (until center is set). Remove from oven and spread sour cream on top of cheesecake. Return to oven and bake an additional five minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Spread desired topping on cheesecake. Chill overnight. Before serving, carefully remove sides from pan. Tip: To minimize cracking, place shallow pan half-full of hot water on lower rack of oven during baking. And be sure the sour cream is at room temperature when you spread it on. In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that entails, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Figure Skating in Harlem finds ways to deal with pandemic

By BARRY WILNER AP Sports Writer

For months last year, Figure Skating in Harlem included no figure skating. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of the 24-year-old organization that serves young women of color in New York City didn’t see the ice from late winter until fall. Once they returned, with strict coronavirus-prevention protocols, it was a major step toward normality. “We had 7- and 8-year-olds up to 18-yearolds, and I have to say when you are able to move physically it helps you mentally,” says Sharon Cohen, CEO and founder of Figure Skating in Harlem. “In some ways, having skating was like a lifeline for these girls when so many sports were canceled. The first day on the ice, we had very strict protocols in place, everyone had masks on and stayed socially distanced. We did everything by the book; that was a change, they had to learn a new routine. But once they got used to it, that brought a sense of normalcy amid the

abnormal. “One of our groups of girls, younger and older girls, worked to create a routine they would perform at Rockefeller Center by mid-January, and they had to think about costumes and music, and then practice to perform it with no physical contact. When they were able to get on the ice, that might have been the only in-person experience they had with their peers. This was such a critical part of the support for our girls in Figure Skating in Harlem: They could come together and be on the ice and not be isolated or at risk. It was an in-between step for them.” The challenges for the girls, who will pay tribute to skaters of color at FSH’s 2021 Champions In Life Virtual Gala on Thursday, extended far beyond the absence of ice time. The program’s objective for nearly a quarter-century has been helping girls of color transform their lives by growing in confidence, leadership and academic achievement. Figure Skating in Harlem combines the power of education with access to the artistic discipline of figure skating “to build champi-

So FSH stepped up its involvement. “We had a class called “Real Talk” in which our amazing social workers and teachers brought the girls together virtually by age,” Cohen says, “and they were able to have a session to just express their emotions and where they are, and express their fears, and be given some tools to work through that, so they recognized they weren’t alone. “Nobody could have imagined having a pandemic and what it would mean on a day-to-day basis, with the added unknown for the girls of fear and pressure. Everyone in the same household together for periods of time. Our girls had a way to be with their peers as much as they could be. And we were grateful we were able to continue to support them off the ice, and provide that place where they could get some individual help.” The pandemic also has forced a second straight virtual gala for FSH. Being honored are the late Mabel Fairbanks, a longtime competitor, performer and coach who was a trailblazer for black skaters; Atoy Wilson, the first black skater to compete at the U.S. Championships and a novice men’s champion; and Susan Kittenplan, president of the Skating Club of New York. Also performing will be U.S. senior level skater Starr Andrews and two-time Olympian Vanessa James of France, who will be introduced by French skater Mae Berenice Meite. “We could really delve into the history of skaters of color,” Cohen says. “Mabel is under-recognized, and the fact we could bring her story to life — this is the most meaningful

gala we have ever done. “But it’s about the legacy of all the skaters of color she encouraged and coached. Atoy Wilson has been a supporter of ours from the beginning. To see it in one virtual, succinct program — it is powerful. And with our program and that backdrop of understanding, the struggle for skaters of color to

gain visibility and prominence. “There have been other organizations that have been active in recent years to bring more visibility to skaters of color. We wanted to invite everyone to the table and make it a celebration of skaters of color from our girls all the way back to Mabel.”

Viola Davis is named Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Viola Davis was named Woman of the Year on Friday by Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals. “Viola has inspired our company with her incredible grit and determination, and we cannot wait to celebrate her successes, strong character and wonderful talent,” said Jessica Moore, the group’s president, in a statement. Davis is scheduled to be honored April 22 in an online ceremony that will include a roast, a discussion and a speech from Davis as she is presented with her ceremonial pudding pot. Because of the pandemic, the event will not include its traditional parade through the streets of Cambridge. “We’re very excited to honor Viola Davis as our 71st

Woman of the Year because of her immense impact in Hollywood, especially in such a historic and difficult year for the arts,” said Natalie Needle, the event coordinator and producer. In March, Davis became the Oscars’ most nominated Black female actor ever when she landed her fourth nomination, this one for her lead role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” The film, based on an August Wilson play, is set around a recording session in 1920s Chicago as a blues band awaits the arrival of Ma Rainey. The movie also includes the final performance from actor Chadwick Boseman, who died last year of cancer. Davis won an Academy Award for her appearance in the 2016 film “Fences,” a role she originated in a 2001

Broadway revival that landed her a Tony Award. The Oscar win made her the first Black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting. She won her Emmy in 2015 for her role in “How To Get Away With Murder,” and she has another Tony win for her role in “King Hedley II.” The Hasty Pudding award has been handed out annually since 1951 to people who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment. Previous Hasty Pudding winners include Meryl Streep, Katharine Hepburn and Helen Mirren. Elizabeth Banks was last year’s recipient.

By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer The NFL is making a more aggressive push into podcasting. The league announced Monday it will partner with iHeartMedia in launcing a podcast network. iHeart will distribute podcasts currently produced by the league’s media division. The two parties will also team up to produce and distribute podcasts currently in the works. “This really gets us into the podcasts space, where we can supercharge the visibility of our current ones and increase the distribution as well as take some of the content from our library to create new ones,” said Brent Lawton, the NFL’s vice president of business development. The NFL currently produces seven podcasts featuring writers from the league’s website as well as NFL Network commentators. Those will now be distributed by iHeartMedia through its podcast network, on its app and other podcast platforms. iHeartMedia is the top podcast producer, according to Podtrac. Some of their podcasts include “The Ron Burgundy Podcast” and “Chelsea Handler: Life will be the Death of Me.” The deal also allows teams to do their own podcasts that can be distributed via iHeart. Lawton said future podcasts will include content from the NFL Films library and that this deal allows them to appeal to a different segment of fans. The new podcasts should debut by the start of the upcoming season. “Our partnership with the NFL is an incredible moment for iHeart and the podcast industry,” said Conal Byrne, CEO of iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group. “These are legendary stories, and we can’t wait to roll out a slate of incredible new podcasts to capture it all.”

Netflix’s subscriber growth, stock zapped as pandemic eases

By MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writer

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) ‚Äî Netflix’s rapid subscriber growth is slowing far faster than anticipated as people who have been cooped at home during the pandemic are able to get out and do other things again. The video-streaming service added 4 million more worldwide subscribers from January through March, its smallest gain during that three-month period in four years. The performance reported Tuesday was about 2 million fewer subscribers than both management and analysts had predicted Netflix would add during the first quarter. It marked a huge comedown from the same time last year when Netflix added nearly 16 million subscribers. That came just as governments around the world imposed lockdowns

that created a huge captive audience for the leading video-streaming service. Signaling that the trend is continuing, Netflix forecast an increase of just 1 million worldwide subscribers in its current April-June period, down from an increase of 10 million subscribers at the same time last year. The poor showing to start the year rattled investors, causing the Los Gatos, California, company’s stock to drop nearly 10% in extended trading. The inevitable slowdown in subscriber growth had been widely telegraphed by Netflix’s management in repeated reminders that its gains were a pandemic-driven anomaly. Now that a large swath of the population has been vaccinated, people are able to move around more freely and finding other diversions besides watching TV series and movies

on Netflix. The big question is how big this year’s drop will be from last year’s full-year increase of 37 million worldwide subscribers ‚Äî by far the biggest since Netflix expanded its DVD-by-rental service into video streaming 14 years ago. Netflix management sought to reassure investors in a letter that predicted subscriber growth would improve during the second half of the year as more TV series and movies that had to be delayed during the pandemic are finished and released. But what happened during the first quarter is a indication Netflix may be headed toward a lackluster year. The last time Netflix started a year with a lower gain -- 5.3 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2017 -- the service ended up with an annual increase of 21.6 million subscribers.
