By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Hopefully, next fall Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Arts and Issues will have something closer to a normal season, said program director Grant Andree.

In the meantime he has a treat for everyone for the last virtual show this season — and it’s free.

Nearly 77 years to the day when composer Jeremy Schonfeld’s father, Gustav Schonfeld, was deported along with approximately 426,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz, “Iron and Coal” will make its Arts and Issues debut.

“I’ve contracted with a company called Beth Morrison Projects to exclusively present, this spring, the filmed concert ‘Iron and Coal,’” Andree said. “I saw it live in New York right before everything shut down.”

The live production included an orchestra, rock band, piano, three singers and more than 100 people in the choir, as well as projected animation. The free virtual show will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 29.

The concert was filmed at The Music Center at Strath-

more in North Bethesda, Maryland. A virtual live panel discussion with composer Schonfeld, music director David Bloom and director Kevin Newberry will immediately follow the presentation. More information with a link and access will be available next month at www. artsandissues.com.

Schonfeld’s father was 10 years old when the Nazis marched into his hometown of Munkacs, Hungary, in May 1944, forcing his dad along with all the others aboard the now infamous cattle cars bound for Poland.

Schonfeld wrote in the program for a live Maryland concert on May 3-4, 2018.

“Of the hundreds of thousands of Jews brought to Auschwitz during those few months, 320,000 were immediately directed to the gas chambers by Hitler’s Schutzstaffel,” he wrote. “All told, over one million Jews were killed in Auschwitz alone.

“My father often described his miraculous survival as being given ‘bonus time,’” he said. “In his memoir, ‘Absence of Closure,’ Dad painstakingly outlined this incredible journey in vivid detail. As he worked, Dad and I often discussed the important and difficult pro-

Through discussions with his father, Schonfeld began to toss around his own ideas about adapting the story through music. He really felt the clock ticking when he received a phone call from his dad months after has father’s memoir was completed. Gustav Schonfeld, a doctor and scientist himself, suffered from a rare

form of leukemia called myelofibrosis, which was manageable for several years.

But during the phone call, he told his son he was joining a double-blind study clinical trial with risks.

“I finally felt compelled to attack this subject matter,” Schonfeld said in the program.

Gustav Schonfeld lived in East St. Louis with his father, also at Auschwitz, and studied at Washington University in St.

Louis School of Medicine, eventually joining the faculty and taking on administrative positions, including chair of the Department of Medicine. Jeremy Schonfeld grew up in Clayton, Missouri.

initially in a concept album, now a fully staged production using original animation and cutting-edge projections. A rock band is backed by an orchestra, a youth chorus and a youth orchestra, all celebrating the spirit of ancestors and the legacy carried on through future generations.

Junior golf still going strong

PGA Junior League returnsto Oak Brook, Sunset Hills Scott Marion For The Telegrapht EDWARDSVILLE – After being among the few local sporting events to survive the COVID-19 pandemic

last summer, the PGA Junior League is back again at Oak Brook Golf Club and Sunset Hills Country Club.

The league, which operated last year with a

modified schedule because of coronavirus restrictions, will likely have some of the modifications in place for 2021.

“Last year we could have only half of our kids prac-

tice at one time and with me doing everything by myself, I had to do double the hours every day,” Oak Brook PGA pro Mike Suhre said. “We ended up having four practices a day for five

weeks for six days a week.

“The great thing about is that we were still able to do it. We had more kids because they weren’t able to do anything else and we kept it safe.”

In 2020, the regular season for the junior league ended on July 31, but Oak Brook continued running junior programming into September and October.

Golf Guide • Thursday, March 25, 2021 • 9 usually includes regional and sectional events and a national championship in October in Scottsdale, Arizona, was canceled due to COVID. Oak Brook hosted its own 25-team tournament for the Gateway Junior PGA Section in late July, with Tapawingo National Golf Club of St. Louis claiming the championship.

After having 120 players on 10 teams in 2019, Oak Brook had a record 145 players on 12 teams last year.

This year, Suhre limited the enrollment to 128 players and every spot has already been filled.

The first practice this year at Oak Brook is April 29, with the first match slated for May 24.

Sunset Hills, meanwhile, had 56 players on four junior league teams in 2020, down from previous years.

The numbers are back up this year at Sunset Hills, which is accepting registration through May 1. Teams will start practicing in mid-April with matches starting in early May. “We’ve already had 60 kids sign up this year and we may stick to four teams or add a fifth team,” said Jon DePriest, PGA director of golf at Sunset Hills. “I think it will be a continuation of the golf explosion as far as people looking for a safe thing for their kids to do. Even with soccer and baseball coming back, I think a lot of people still want to have their kids involved in golf.”

Other local courses participating in the league include The Legacy Golf Course in Granite City, Arlington Greens Golf Course in Granite City, Far Oaks Golf Club in Caseyville, Rolling Hills Golf Club in Godfrey, Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton and St. Clair Country Club in Belleville.

Unlike previous years, when teams from Oak Brook traveled to play at other area courses, the 2020 season featured an “in-house league,” with all the Oak Brook teams playing on their home course.

Oak Brook will employ the same format this year, with some modifications.

“I’m now on the PGA Junior League committee, which includes about 10 of us throughout the country, and they’re changing the rules this year to stress in-house leagues,” Suhre said. “Each PGA professional (in charge of a team) can control what they’re doing a little better. There will be an option for travel days where you can go to other courses and play extra matches outside of your league.”

Sunset Hills, likewise, will host an in-house league for the second year in a row.

“We had a meeting last year with the parents and most of them were more com-

fortable with us staying in our own environment,” DePriest said. “My assistant, Nick Jones, has had some conversations with St. Clair Country Club and Stonewolf and a few other places and there’s a possibility we might branch out to other courses as the summer moves along.”

The league is designed for players ages 7-13, although a new rule for this year will limit “all-stars” (postseason golfers) to being at least 10 years old.

Under the league format, there are eight to 12 players on a team and each team will play five to six matches throughout the summer. A scramble format is used, with two teammates facing two golfers from the other team.

“It’s golf as a team sport, so you’re not out there doing it on your own,” Suhre said. “Since you play a scramble, if you’re not the strongest driver, you can still hit a chip or a putt and make a difference in the match.”

The league hopes to resume its postseason schedule after a one-year absence.

“The national championships are on ESPN, so it’s a pretty big deal,” Suhre said.

Suhre recently earned the Gamechanger Award from the PGA for being the team captain with the most golfers registered in the nation for the junior league.

“They give awards to the top 20 teams in the country and three of the top five are in the St. Louis area, so that says a lot about how popular junior golf is around here,” Suhre said.

In a related junior golf event, Sunset Hills is hosting the subregional for Drive, Chip and Putt on Aug. 5. It was scheduled to host the same event last year, but the competition was canceled on the national level due to the pandemic.

Oak Brook will host a qualifying tournament for Drive, Chip and Putt on June 16.

Golf for beginners

Millions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this difficult sport.

In its “U.S. Golf Economy Report,” released in 2018, WE ARE GOLF, a coalition of golf’s governing bodies, found there was a 20 percent increase in junior golf participation in the five years between 2011 and 2016. Plus, there were 2.5 million golfers who played for the first time in 2016, up from 1.5 million in 2011. Even more exciting for the industry is non-golfers interested in playing golf doubled to 12.8 million.

There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow. the game. However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some golfing experience.

3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing.

4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees, offers Golf Digest. This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce sidespin so shots fly more straight.

5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots.

6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing.

With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly.

The NCAA’s adjusted rules for COVID-19 prevented the coach from Cal State University Northridge from watching the Marquette Catholic junior compete in the 14th annual Future Champions Girls National Championship. “But I still decided just to come out here and play,” Piar said.

The CSUN coach missed quite a performance.

Piar put together rounds of 69 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday at Singing Hills Resort’s Willow Glen Golf Course in the San Diego suburb of El Cajon to place runner-up in the Future Champions tourney for girls ages 15-18.

“Probably one of the better tournaments I’ve played,” Piar said.

Piar, coming off a championship with playing partner Riley Lewis of Edwardsville in November’s USGA Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship Qualifying tournament in St. George, Utah, was undone by a double-bogey on the 17th hole Sunday that turned her one-stroke lead into a one-stroke deficit she could not overcome on 18.

“I had a really good run going, only 1-over going into 17,” Piar said of the 525-yard, par 5, hole No. 17. “I was going for par 5s the whole tournament and I was like, OK, I’m not going to change anything because I’m 1 over. I’m still going to go for it. I probably should have just hit 6 iron, because I pulled my 3 wood way left into a hazard. Yeah, I should have just hit 6 iron and gone on and two-putted for par. But I just wanted to go for it.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t pull it off. But I’m still happy with both of my rounds.”

Piar’s 3-under 69 in the opening round was the tourney’s best and left her with a two-shot lead over Kana Kawamura of Japan and Taylor Riley of San Diego. Riley fell out of contention with a second-day 80, while Kawamura and Bridget O’Keefe battled Piar for the title.

After a birdie on No. 16, Piar took a two-shot lead over O’Keefe and a three-shot edge of Kawamura to 17. But O’Keefe flipped the leaderboard with a birdie, while Piar’s double-bogey seven left her one back with Kawamura two shots off the pace with par on the hole.

O’Keefe, from Palo Alto, California, and Piar both made par on 18 to give O’Keefe the title at 143. Kawamura birdied 18 to earn a tie with Piar for second place at 144. Piar, from East Alton, was the only player in the field of 81 from east of New Mexico.

Californian’s Annika Ishiyama (145) of Costa Mesa (145), Jade Zamora (149) of San Clemente, Jasmine Kahler (150) of Carlsbad and Malia Cottriel (150) of Costa Mesa completed the top six.

Piar, who flew back to St. Louis on Monday, was able to visit the Cal State campus in Northridge. “It’s really nice,” she said.

Piar is beginning to take a hard look at a long list of colleges with a women’s golf program that offers a fit.

“Probably 10-to-13,” the Explorers all-stater said. “Just all over.”

Ohio State remains No. 1 on Piar’s college wish list, but her profile will continue to rise with efforts like these in national tourneys.

Piar played Willow Glen for the first time in a practice round on Friday. That was enough to produce a super Saturday.

“I only got to look at the course one time,” Piar said of the tourney’s opening round with four birdies and one bogey.

“But my 69, it was great.”

It was certainly better than the number Sherri Piar set as a target for Round 1 after Friday’s introduction.

“My mom’s like, OK, just shoot 73,” Gracie Piar said. “I was, no, I’m thinking in the 60s for this tournament. We were just joking around and then I pulled it off.”

Piar has nothing on her tournament schedule until April when she and Lewis travel to Texas for the USGA Four-Ball championship. But Piar expects events will catch her attention before then.

“I’m sure we’ll squeeze some in there,” she said.

Golfers enthusiastically look forward to the day when their favorite courses reopen to players each year. That anticipation was even greater in 2020, when social distancing measures forced many courses to stay closed even as the weather warmed up. Thankfully for golfers, golf courses were among the first businesses given the green light to reopen as governments began to lift restrictions.

Golfing in the era of social distancing may not be quite the same as it was prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, but golfers can still have fun as they hit the links. That’s especially true when they take steps to understand just what it means to golf while social distancing prior to teeing off.

• Assess your personal health before going to the golf course. Golf attracts athletes from all age groups, including some that are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, age is a risk factor for COVID-19, as older adults are more vulnerable to severe illness if they are infected with the virus than younger adults. Social distancing requires a collective effort on the part of everyone to keep vulnerable people safe, and golfers are no exception. Golfers young and old who are under the weather or experiencing even mild symptoms of COVID-19 should avoid golf courses until they feel better. In addition, young golfers can choose tee times when they’re less likely to come into contact with older golfers. Early morning tee times tend to be popular among older golfers, but speak with staff at the course to see if they

have rules in place to safeguard older golfers.

If they do, respect those rules. If they don’t, work with staff to choose a tee time when you’re less likely to be around older golfers.

• Disinfect clubs before or after playing.

Disinfecting clubs and other equipment before and after playing is a simple measure that can reduce golfers’ risk of getting the virus or spreading it if they have it but are asymptomatic. Simply wipe down clubs and other equipment with disinfectant or an alcohol-based cleanser that is at least 60 percent alcohol. If playing with a friend, resist the urge to share clubs, no matter how tempting it may be to take your playing partner’s new driver for a spin on the first hole.

• Refuse valet service. Many courses have temporarily stopped offering valet services to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Golfers who visit a club that is not taking such precautions can opt to refuse the service. Doing so decreases the risk of getting or spreading the virus by limiting the number of people with whom you come into direct contact.

• Pack supplies. Contact the course in advance to determine if the dining room is open and if the course is providing hand sanitizer at each tee. At-risk golfers may want to skip dining at the course after their round is over, opting to pack their own lunch or eat when they arrive home after playing. If the course is not offering hand sanitizer at each hole, pack your own as an extra precaution.

Golfing in the era of social distancing may be different, but there’s no reason golfers cannot still enjoy a summer on the links.

The Masters Tournament is the first of golf’s four major championships in the calendar year. Competitors tee off at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA, in April 2020. Americans Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed are the two most recent Masters champions, and fans are already eager to see who earns the fabled green jacket this year.

Televised golf competitions often inspire people to hit the links. People with a passion for golf may want to check out some of the top courses in the world, as ranked by leading golf resources and experts.

• Ballybunion: This Irish course was touted as “nothing less than the finest seaside course” by famed golf writer Herbert Warren Wind. The course hosted the 2000 Irish Open, but lack of other tournaments can be attributed to its remote, albeit beautiful, location.

• Cypress Point: This club sits at the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula in California.

Located in coastal dunes and on rocky coastlines, Cypress Point is often noted for its dramatic holes along the Pacific Ocean.

• Pine Valley: Located in Pine Valley, NJ, this course, which is more than 100 years old,

boasts some formidable hazards with sophisticated green expanses.

• St. Andrew’s: This historic course in Scotland has hosted the Open Championship (once known as The British Open) a record 29 times. Historians believe golf originated in Scotland, and people have been playing on this course since the 15th century. Massive greens, cavernous bunkers and a brilliant layout contribute to its distinguished history.

• Shinnecock Hills: This course in Southampton, NY, is a very old club built in the tradition of Scottish courses. This was likely the inaugural American golf course design, and the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was one of the five founding members of the United States Golf Association.

• Augusta National: Home to the Masters, Augusta is considered a golf paradise by many. The sheer beauty of Augusta has made it a staple on many golfers’ bucket lists, even if only a few may get to walk its fairways with club in hand.

Review: Vibrant new portrait of artist Helen Frankenthaler

“Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York,” by Alexander Nemerov (Penguin Press) There are doorstop biographies, and then there are appreciations. Alexander Nemerov has taken the latter approach in “Fierce Poise,” his vibrant, sympathetic portrait of Helen Frankenthaler. It focuses on 11 consequential days in the 1950s, the decade when she came of age as one of the leading painters of her generation.

Nemerov, the son of the celebrated poet Howard Nemerov and nephew of photographer Diane Arbus, grew up in the same rarified world as Frankenthaler.

He admired her art for years but didn’t feel prepared to write her biography until he got older (he’s 57) and gave himself permission to love her “pretty” art, pictures that portray “fleeting impressions” through “blots and swaths of bright color” poured and stained into canvas, “as sur-

prising and glorious as life itself.”

“The prevailing ways of seeing art over the past 50 years have made it difficult to comprehend the strength and sober delight of her kind of painting,” he writes. “Our culture has become terribly skeptical of romantic art such as hers.”

It’s good he finally undertook the project because Frankenthaler, one of the five women artists profiled in Mary Gabriel’s highly regarded 2018 “Ninth Street Women,” is a fascinating subject.

He touches on her privileged life growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side; her life-changing encounter with Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings; the stormy love affair with the influential, older art critic Clement Greenberg; a later marriage to fellow abstract expressionist painter Robert Motherwell; and the creation of her breakthrough painting, “Mountains and Sea,” in 1952.

An art historian at Stanford, Nemerov is a thoughtful and judicious writer. He does a good job of sorting through various

criticisms leveled at Frankenthaler over the years, including that she was an opportunist, coasted by on family wealth, and was too elitist and apolitical.

Some readers may wish he had delved more deeply into the entire body of work ‚Äî she died in 2011 at age 83 ‚Äî and more fully addressed the bizarre criticism, scarcely rebutted here, that her signature stain technique was related to menstruation. Indeed, Joan Mitchell ‚Äî another of the “Ninth Street Women” ‚Äî called her “that Kotex painter.”

But brevity can be a virtue. In just over 200 pages, Nemerov takes us on a fast, exhilarating ride through the formative decade of her career, providing a lucid introduction to an artist we’re likely to hear more about in the near future. A year after Gabriel’s book came out, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, creators of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” announced they hoped to develop it for a new series.

Chicken Salad Chic

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge I last visited Chicken Salad Chick in Edwardsville just before the pandemic. I knew then I wanted to come back and try another flavor, but obviously, Vicki the state of Bennington the world kept me away longer than I intended.

But never fear, I didn’t forget about the lengthy list of chicken salad flavors that were there for the choosing.

There are many flavors to try, and if you can’t choose by the ingredients, pick by the name. That’s how I choose horses for The Kentucky Derby.

This time, for my sandwich, I ordered the chicken salad BLT, but I did have to choose a specific mix of chicken salad to be included in it. The “Classic Carol” is too good to pass up with its celery, white meat and secret seasoning, though “Olivia’s Old South,” with sweet pickles and egg is screaming MY name for next time.

We chose to do curbside pickup, which the establishment has down to a science. It doesn’t take long, and your order is right on the money.

What stands out is how fresh it is, made daily.

The “Fruity Fran” is chicken chunks with Fuji apples, seedless grapes and pineapple, or try the “Kickin’ Kay Lynne,” a spicy choice with buffalo sauce, ranch, bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, jalapeños and sriracha sauce.

My husband tried the “Sassy Scotty,” I guess because he thought he liked the more masculine

name? He didn’t say that, but as it turned out, he said it was quite tasty, whatever the reason for his originally choosing it, with a blend of ranch, bacon and shredded cheddar cheese.

The “Dixie Chick” sounds fun, and is the only one with onions. You can order all the flavors as a sandwich with a choice of croissant or type of bread, or you can order your favorite as a scoop on a nice little bed of lettuce.

The original chicken salad “chick” is Stacy Brown, and she named the flavors of her famous concoctions after women who inspired and supported her along the way.

In all, there are 12 different flavors of chicken

salad, made fresh by hand every day, with premium chicken tenderloin. You can also try a pimento cheese BLT or a turkey club. Chicken Salad Chick offers its own version of pimento cheese in sandwiches or as a scoop, which is made of grated sharp cheddar and pepper jack cheeses with the creamy house dressing.

For sides, I chose the pasta salad, which had a nice twist with artichoke hearts and black olives. We also tried the loaded baked potato soup that was rich and tasty.

Chicago opera appoints Opera Edwardsville founder as director

CHICAGO — Haymarket Opera Company has appointed Chase Hopkins as the company’s first general director.

Haymarket Opera Company inspires a culturally vibrant community and diversifies the artistic landscape of Chicago and the Midwest through the presentation of historically informed opera and oratorio from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Hopkins, who founded Opera Edwardsville, a nonprofit focused on education and proliferation of opera for all, was, appointment as Haymarket Opera Company’s interim general director in March 2020. Together with Artistic Director Craig Trompeter, Hopkins has led Haymarket Opera Company (HOC) into its 10th Anniversary Season featuring three new cinematic productions of Handel operas.

“I am thrilled to be working with Chase Hopkins in his new role as general director,” Trompeter said. “Chase brings to Haymarket his infectious passion for

opera and an unflagging commitment to building community.”

His own singing career included a strong focus on Baroque opera, and he has performed with distinguished conductors at festivals across Europe and the U.S. “As Haymarket reflects on the success of its first decade, we are enormously excited to welcome Chase Hopkins into this new leadership position,” said Jerry Tietz, who became president of HOC’s board in April, 2020. “Chase has already demonstrated remarkable talent, tireless dedication and an inspiring vision for the future.”

Hopkins, of Edwardsville, where he will continue as Opera Edwardsville’s founding artistic director, holds a bachelor’s degree in performance and arts administration from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in performance from the Royal Northern College of Music, a leading international conservatoire based in Manchester, England.

Hopkins will maintain his role with Opera Edwardsville while serving as Haymarket Opera Company’s general director.

“I am eager to contribute all that I can to the artistic success and organizational growth of this fantastic early opera company,” Hopkins said. “I bring passion for this repertoire as a singer, performer and creative producer, and I’m very much looking forward to serving as the company’s general director.”

Haymarket Opera Company opened its 10th season in October with a virtually presented production of Handel’s “Acis and Galatea,” filmed at Chicago’s Resolution Studios.

The season continued March 5 with Handel’s “Apollo e Dafne,” to be followed by the composer’s “Orlando” this summer.

Historical society returns Civil War records to state archivist

EDWARDSVILLE — For years unbeknownst to the boards of the Madison County Historical Society (MCHS), state records related to the Alton Confederate Prison rested in its archives.

Former Archival Library Research Manager Mary Westerhold, who retired one year ago, actually discovered that Civil War documents were original state records, and informed the board they belonged in the Illinois State Archives in Springfield, recalled MCHS’ Cindy Reinhardt, a board member and chair of the society’s public relations committee.

“We were pleased to hear that the transfer had been completed,” she said. “Mary Westerhold was doing some work a couple years ago and realized they were not private documents.

They should have been turned in to the state after the Civil War. Soldiers just took them home with them when the war ended.”

“We had them for a long time,” she said.

“A descendant of the soldier who kept the records donated them to the Madison County Archival Library, and we returned the records to where they should have been more than a century ago.”

Thus, MCHS donated to the Illinois State Archives original Civil War muster rolls, enlistment papers and miscellaneous documents related to the 144th Infantry Regiment, a state militia unit based out of Madison County who served as prison guards at the

Alton Prison, one of four prisoner of war camps for confederate soldiers in Illinois. Prison ruins still exist in downtown Alton.

Illinois State Archivist David Joens came to the Madison County Archival Library, 801 N. Main St., in Edwardsville, in December, to pick up the documents.

“We made a nice inventory for them and evaluated the documents; they were in wonderful shape. I give Madison County tremendous credit. We don’t take everything. These needed a little light cleaning, a little repair, but really not that much.”

Back in Springfield at the Margaret Cross Norton Archives Building, the records were made it part of the Illinois State Archives collection.

The records consisted of three hand-written muster rolls, the enlistment papers of several Madison County soldiers, plus equipment inventories and quartermaster reports. The records are stored in the 85-year-old climate-controlled building in the Capital complex.

“Dave Joens was thrilled to find out that we had them,” Reinhardt recalled.

“They have no way of knowing if someone’s got them or if they were destroyed, so they’re always glad to find them, and better yet in good condition.”

The State Archives also made both paper and digital copies of the records for use by the Madison County Historical Society. And the Archives returned extra copies of materials

and documents unrelated to the unit to the Madison County Historical Society.

“When I first realized that these were original Civil War documents that belong to the state, I started the process of returning them,” Westerhold has said. “It’s great that they are finally where they belong.”

Before World War I, America fought wars using federalized state military units, meaning the records of those units belonged to the states. After the war, the records for the units were to be returned to the state.

“The Madison County Historical Society has been in possession of these records for many years and maintained them in excellent

condition,” said Secretary of State and State Archivist Jesse White. “We appreciate that the society realized these records should be in Springfield, where we keep the official records for the 144th.”

The purpose of the Archives is to keep official state records, but also for preservation for historians to make use of the materials, Joens explained.

Both the Illinois State Archives and the Madison County Archival Library are open to the public by appointment during the pandemic. The Madison County Historical Museum still is under construction, delayed by the pandemic.

Oscar-nominated doc tops

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — I experienced a very uncomfortable sensation when the Oscar nominations were announced last week. I was completely caught off guard when this happened because of all the weirdness in my world.

My schedule had been changing constantly, I was already at work for the day, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention.

There are plenty of excuses why I missed the televised press conference with Priyanka Chopra and whichever Jonas brother she married. While I accept it, it’s also the first time in more than 20 years that I hadn’t tuned in and that pill is bitter to swallow. But isn’t this endemic of our pandemic times?

It feels like a lot of the things that are touchstone to us — pillars of our identity, like, “the movies” are for me — are almost always in flux right now. Even after reviewing the slate, there were dozens of the 56 nominees I had never even

heard of. I got busy thereafter with the first of two Netflix feature documentaries.

“Executive producers President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama present…” has a nice ring to it. Thus opens “Crip Camp,” an emotional look at a group of 1970s-era hippie teenagers who met at summer camp in upstate New York and how their relationships have changed the course of disability etiquette and the practical lives of millions all over the world. This documentary is from Higher Ground, the production company founded by former the Obamas.

Co-writer and co-director Jim LeBrecht narrates a good chunk of the early part of the movie, from his perspective as a young man with spina bifida, coming to Camp Jened, a communal living place where he could experience life without a hyper-focus on his inability to use his legs.

Instead, he gets to find love with his first girlfriend, Nancy, and smoke marijuana with the counselors. The peaceand-love vibes are like heaven to these kids from Brooklyn and the Bronx, and

there isn’t one face in any of the grainy old footage that doesn’t have a big smile plastered across it. A local production company filmed a lot of the activities about the area’s only camp for teens with disabilities and the footage has been incorporated into today’s interviews with these post-Baby Boomers.

Judy Heumann features prominently across the second half of the documentary where the kids of Camp Jened start to grow up and go out into the world. Many of them wound up in California and she rallied them at University of California, Berkeley in the early ’80s. After cutting their teeth on protesting the Nixon Administration’s inability to pass and enforce legal protections for the disabled, they really went after Reagan in the same way.

People, like, LeBrecht, Heumann and Neil and Denise Jacobson, now-married campers, took sit-in tactics and civil disobedience to a point where changes led to President George H. W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act into law in 1990.

News footage of that year’s “Capitol Crawl,” an inspiring climb up the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building by dozens of people unable to walk, is in stark contrast to the events we witnessed on Jan. 6.

Images like these and the great folk rock soundtrack that plays behind these images present an accessible look at these lives who help non-disabled viewers empathize in a way that is affirming and often difficult.

Get beyond the discomfort. As Heumann herself has said, “Disability only becomes a tragedy for me when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives — job opportunities or barrier-free buildings, for example. It is not a tragedy to me that I’m living in a wheelchair.”

“Crip Camp” runs 106 minutes and is rated R for some language including sexual references. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

A mad scientist in the music studio, this Starrah is rising

NEW YORK (AP) – Freshly minted Grammy-winning songwriter Starrah has long helped others be stars. Now it’s her turn to shine.

The hitmaker for the likes of Drake, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Camila Cabello, Nicki Minaj, Halsey and Katy Perry is releasing her debut full-length album this week, a natural extension for the self-taught studio prodigy.

“I just really love hearing new sounds and experimenting with music,” she says. “I just feel like a little mad scientist in the lab when I put stuff together and just see what it does.”

The 13-track “Longest Interlude” – out Wednesday – showcases her command of R&B, hip-hop and pop skills, all delivered in an

achingly personal collection she likens to opening her diary.

“I personally feel like the only thing that’s missing from a lot of music right now is just the raw emotion and honesty, like vulnerability,” she says. “Everybody wants to be cool. Nobody wants to be vulnerable.”

Starrah has tapped some musical royalty for producing help, including James Blake, Skrillex, Boi1da and Nile Rogers. She recorded some of the songs at Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded. She says it’s all a bit surreal.

“The only time I heard about the Beatles was a music class so it’s crazy to think that I recorded my music in the studio that they worked, with Rogers – a legend,” she says. “It’s hard to wrap my mind around it sometime, but it’s really cool. It’s like a dream.”

She’s co-written songs that have over 14 billions streams, among them Cabello’s “Havana,” Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You,” Drake’s “Fake Love,” Halsey’s “Now or Never,” Maroon 5 and SZA’s “What Lovers Do” and Perry’s “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj.

More of her songs include The Weeknd’s “Starboy” album cut “True Colors,” Rihanna’s “Needed Me” and Beyonc√©’s “Already” from “Black Is King.”

She also worked on multiple tracks for Madonna’s latest album, “Madame X.” Starrah won a Grammy on Sunday for working on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage Remix” featuring Beyonce©. She previously scored a 2018 ASCAP Pop Music Songwriter of the Year award ‚Äî becoming the first woman in nearly two decades. She also landed a spot in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in

2019.

Not bad for a Black and LGBTQ woman in a male-dominated field who was working in public storage when she first got noticed.

“To see her go from public storage to the Forbes list is something nobody can take away,” says her manager, Nick Jarjour.

She grew up as Brittany Hazzard in a small town in Delaware, the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. Music was always a big part of her life. She used to fall asleep to music and wake up to it the next morning. “When I was a kid, I just used to just play around with music all day,” she says.

Starrah experimented with online music programs like FruityLoops and Audacity, watching YouTube tutorials and learning how to loop instrumentals. “Anything I could do to try to learn how to make beats or learn how to

make music,” she recalls.

Jarjour remembers first hearing Starrah while listening to a college radio R&B show. Her song, “Drank Up” came on and he immediately spent hours searching her SoundCloud profile.

“From the first second I heard her, chills went through my whole body and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” he says. “It is really astonishing to see how far she’s come, but it’s no surprise because she had that drive inside her from the beginning.”

Her appetite for music is broad.

As a kid, she was raised on a sonic diet of Britney Spears, Eve, Ruff Ryders and Lil’ Bow Wow. These days, she feeds her “eclectic palate” everything.

“I don’t limit myself to what I listen to, honestly,” she says.

“One day I could be listening to NBA YoungBoy or Kodak Black.

And the next day I’m listening to Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke or Coltrane or Skrillex.”

Trust and mutual respect are key whenever Starrah decides to help someone on their song, not the popularity of the artist, and she hopes for just “good vibes.” She’s currently working on Normani’s next album and the upcoming animated musical “Century Goddess.”

“When I’m writing for an artist, I feel like it’s important for me to sit down and have a conversation with them and see where they’re at in life and just what kind of music do they want to make,” she says. “I’m highly empathetic so I can pretty much put myself in that person’s shoes and write, if necessary for them, from their perspective.”

Despite her impact, she usually shuns the limelight, even preferring to distort photo portraits or partially cover her face. She says she values her privacy and didn’t get into the music business for fame.

“If you think of anything other than the music, it’s a distraction to me. If you’re focused on a personality attached to the music, it just takes away from the music,” she says. “I just feel like that should be the focal point.”
