Lounge, nail salon blended cultures work together for astonishing client experience

EDWARDSVILLE — Step into a world that involves all of the senses, where undivided attention is the norm, where you’ll be hard-pressed to leave and feel like you’re at a resort, even though it’s close to home.

Edwardsville’s Gina Gamblin pulled out all the stops to create a luxury destination where you’re never underdressed or overdressed. EXO is for everyone, all ages, all cultures.

“We are a true blend of cultures,” explained Gamblin, who founded EXO Lounge and Nail Bar, which opened last Friday. In a partnership with Ricky and Jen Thai, of Edwardsville, for-

merly of ZaZa Nails, Ricky Thai oversees the Nail Bar, while an EXO team of industry experts manages EXO Lounge, which services the Nail Bar, as well as the general public.

“I would go to nail salons, and love the service and work ethic, but I looked at it as more of a chore,” Gamblin recalled. “I wanted the end result, but I didn’t enjoy my time while there. I want us to have a little fun here at EXO.” Nail and salon services include waxing, eyelashes, eyebrows, children’s services for age 8 and older and for men.

Sustainability and social responsibility is another area where EXO opted to seek the very best of industry practices. EXO Nail Bar is the first and only Edwardsville nail salon to fit each

station with a ventilation system that reduces the impact of harsh chemicals and fumes given off by nail polish and related products. This commitment by the EXO team offers a safer environment for staff and customers, Ricky Thai said.

Hygiene and cleanliness are the top priority of Thai, who worked in the surgery department of Saint Louis University Hospital for five years.

Thai equipped EXO Nail Bar with state-of-the-art autoclave technology in M11 Ultraclave models.

“We toss the dipping powder after each customer,” he noted.

EXO Nail Bar has 3,000-plus colors of polish.

And, with all this, EXO Lounge and Nail Bar’s pricing is comparable to all surrounding salons.

“We are super proud to have comparable pricing and the same minimal pricing as surrounding nail salons,” Gamblin noted to The Edge.

The EXO Classic Manicure costs $15; gel manicure costs $29; and, the Signature Rose Petal Manicure costs $34 for a regular application and $49 for gel. Pedicure services are equally comparable. A Classic regular pedicure costs $25. There also are several EXO Signature pedicures from which to choose. EXO’s Gentleman’s all-inclusive package includes a manicure with hand massage, pedicure with foot massage and one whiskey cocktail. Kids services include EXO’s Mini PediCake, Mini Jell-Ohh and regular Mini Manicure, which costs $14. A full salon menu, with a vari-

ety of luxury options and add-ons, can be found at www.visitEXO.com. EXO gift cards also are available.

It’s the same philosophy for EXO Lounge.

You can have a $3 beer or a high-end glass of wine, like, Opus or Pappy Van Winkle, which are rarely sold by the glass, or cold-pressed juices and cappuccinos.

“I only had the idea,” Gamblin explained about how her concept came together through the effort and support of a core team: Justin VanMatre, who works in all aspects of EXO, in unison with Gamblin, and he also is director of operations for Edwardsville’s Mike Shannon’s Grill and its location at St. Louis Lambert International Airport; Shannon Petrou with Petrou Design, who designed EXO Lounge; her husband, Alex Petrou, with the Sharq Agency, who designed the EXO brand and oversees its marketing and development; Chris Grodeon, of Mascoutah, who designed the EXO Nail Bar; Ricky and Jen Thai, who own the Nail Bar business and operate EXO Nail Bar; Marcus Owen, of Edwardsville, general manager of EXO Lounge; Pyramid Electrical and Bob Snell and his team, of Fairview Heights, described as having gone “over and beyond”; and, Contegra Construction, of Edwardsville, also praised by Gamblin for its high-end, modern construction of EXO that “really stepped out of the box.

The EXO journey began for Gamblin with just a thought, about the professional services she desired, but with a fun twist.

“I started thinking ‘martini bar,’ but wanted to go for the maximum, and quickly met Justin,” recalled Gamblin, who counts VanMatre as her right-hand-person for everything, including conceptualization and execution.

EXO Lounge serves not only hand-mixed signature organic cocktails but a long list of non-alcoholic beverages, all-natural ingredients, such as Himalayan salt, activated charcoal, aloe, matcha and Aquafaba, which can be used in place of egg white, VanMatre explained.

“We are taking a healthier approach,” he said.

EXO Nail Bar serves complementary fruit-infused waters.

Overall, the beverage selection and small bites also keep healthy nutrition in mind, using organic ingredients and mindful products.

She counts branding expert, Alex Petrou, as a “big part of the team.” Petrou is responsible for many high-profile accounts, including Eva Longoria’s website and audiovisual work for the St. Louis Blues.

Owen, an Edwardsville native, recently relocated back to the city from Florida to manage EXO Lounge, which services EXO Nail Bar, but also the general public. Owen previously managed The Pepper Lounge, a trendy, hip St. Louis club, and Mandarin Lounge, now closed but previously a staple of St. Louis nightlife since 2006.

“EXO is two businesses working in unison, providing a popular, pampering, desired service in EXO Nail Bar and a social, fun gathering place in EXO Lounge,” explained Gamblin, who owns and operates a logistics company, as well.

for easy ordering of EXO Lounge’s hand-mixed signature cocktails or a glass of wine, including high-end varietals rarely served by the glass. Nail Bar clients also can order small bites from the lounge, including custom cheese and charcuterie boards, tapenade, chocolate bark and macaroons.

EXO Nail Bar’s party room can be set up with a private bar, small bites and preferred music.

“The sky is the limit,” Gamblin said. “EXO will continue to exceed all expectations. Minds will be blown!”

Technology meets the beauty service industry at EXO. Clients can book salon appointments online, choose their nail technician, service and add-ons.

“You will always leave happier than when you arrive,” Gamblin promised.

Every EXO Lounge table and custom-designed seat along the bar has an USB outlet.

“You don’t ever have to leave,” Gamblin said. “We’ve created a concept, an experience, a destination, a luxury, a philosophy, a lifestyle.

“We wanted a destination where — no matter what your day is like — you can come and feel refreshed with a social experience out of this world.”

Throughout EXO Lounge and Nail Bar, there are 200-plus speakers for music or a live DJ and multiple video screens showing the latest hot music videos or customized for special occasions and private parties, for which EXO hosts on a regular basis. Prior to EXO Lounge’s official public opening Friday, the ND4SPD Car Club, exclusively for exotic car owners, celebrated its holiday gathering and EXO Nail Bar hosted a party for a group of city of Edwardsville municipal employees.

“EXO is all about the senses,” Gamblin said.

When Alton resident Kelly Wooldridge opened her lifestyle retail business, Merchant On Mill, in Elsah, she fell in love even more with the historic village. Wooldridge rents a historic barn next door for her shop from bestie Julie Harper, who owns European-style dress shop The Look Factory and a quaint Airbnb upstairs, but Wooldridge purchased the historic stone cottage for herself, where she and her family have a home away from home. Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Get crabby for celebrations!

At one time, she rolled and fried crab rangoon, because it was always a family favorite. It was very time consuming, she enlisted helpers, and reserved it for special occasions, but then she found this easier recipe online. Not only is it easier, it’s healthier, still tastes good and makes a nice presentation.

Well … the first time I made it was Thanksgiving. My brother and his wife have hosted the holiday in Lake St. Louis for many years, and I have always been assigned appetizers. While thumbing through recipes that I had printed out to try at some point, I found the “Flaire” article about Debbie with the crab rangoon. I tried it (doubling the recipe), and it didn’t take too long to complete. The longest part is spooning the mixture into the little shells, but it still wasn’t bad.

I baked them right before we left the house, then wrapped the cookie sheets in foil and put a heavy towel around them in the car, because I knew there was no oven room once we arrived at my brother’s – he had it stuffed full of turkey (and stuffing).

When we arrived, the crab rangoon were still warm, and it didn’t take long for 60 of them to disappear. In fact, if I take them again next year, I will probably triple the recipe. My husband liked them especially.

So … when we were invited in December to a party at a friend’s house, I decided to make them again. The only two people who had tried them at the first gathering were my daughter and my husband, and he was enthusiastically nodding his head for me to make them again. He thinks they are that good.

As some of you might remember, for a decade or so, I wrote a “traveling recipe” piece that ran monthly in “Flaire for Women” magazine.

I always had a long list of area cooks, eager to share their recipes. And trust me, I was just as keen to taste them. It was a pretty good gig. I would visit the cook in her home (yes, I said her, because other than an annual male cook in June, in honor of Father’s Day, all of my recipe ladies – as I called them - were women). They would make a dish for me and discuss their history with cooking (while we munched on the food), and I met many wonderful people. And did I mention I got to eat a lot of great food?

Three or four years ago, Vicki I took an adventurous trip Bennington up and down some fairly steep inclines leading to the home of Debbie Hoefert, where she prepared a scrumptious Mini Baked Crab Rangoon that turned out to be deceivingly easy (and quick) to prepare.

I shared the recipe in “Flaire” at that time, but had not tried making it myself until fairly recently. I don’t think Debbie would mind if I share it again and include my own experiences.

As she said, “it’s unique, and it’s always a conversation piece.” She often takes it along to family gatherings or as a treat to share with her card club.

I did make them again.

When I took off the cover, everyone oohed and aahed at the way they looked.

Because it was a group where there were people I didn’t know, I made a nice little sign to label them as “Crab Rangoon,” just in case there were any seafood allergies.

They oohed and aahed about that, too!

Once everyone tried them, they said, “mmm, that’s good.” It was suggested that I should have brought recipe cards to pass out.

In other words, they were a hit.

If you have a holiday gathering coming up, or just want to make something tasty for home, give them a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Incidentally, I made them a second time in December, too – just for my husband and I. They lasted for two nights as appetizers, and even tasted good the second night after being warmed up in the microwave!

Mini Baked Crab Rangoon 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 2 to 3 tablespoons horseradish sauce 3/4 cup (or 1 small can) chopped imita-

tion crabmeat 1 tablespoon chopped green onion (optional) 2 packages (1.9 ounce each) frozen miniature phyllo tart shells Paprika (optional) In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and horseradish until smooth. Stir in crab and onion. Spoon two to three teaspoonfuls into each tart shell; sprinkle with paprika.

Place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 F for 16 to 18 minutes or until tops begin to brown. Makes 30.

Sweet and Savory Dipping Sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup ketchup 1 teaspoon horseradish sauce (this was not in the original recipe, but I added it to give it a little zip) Mix, then microwave for about a minute.

Spoon over the top of each crab rangoon.
