Moving insurance can add protection for large pieces of furniture and valuable items. Moving insurance may also cover your hotel stay should your furniture movers encounter delays. Research truck rentals If you think moving yourself is the way to go, here are some factors to evaluate. While the upfront cost of a DIY move may seem less, you’ll have to account for gas, time, and car transportation. You can estimate the cost of gas for your trip at FuelEconomy.gov. The upfront cost for a truck rental averages $130 for a short, local trip up to $3,250 for a long-distance move. If you’re driving the moving truck, who will move your car? While many people have family or friends who can help with a local move, a long-distance trip may require a vehicle transportation company. According to Moving.com, the cost to transport a small sedan from one state to another can cost you $600 - $1,000.

Budget your PTO for moving day Many people try to plan their move for a weekend. Even if you’re just moving across town, a weekend move is tough, and you’ll still likely be sorting through boxes come Monday. If anything goes wrong, like a flat tire, you could be pressed on time. For a more effective move, start saving your paid time off (PTO) now. By taking days off of work, you can effectively plan, move, and unpack without stress.

Plan for child and pet care Many people often overlook the troubles that children and pets can cause on moving day. With people going in and out of the house all day, lifting heavy objects, and leaving doors open, your kids and pets are at risk of getting injured or lost. If you have room in your budget, consider hiring childcare or boarding your pets for the day. A budget-friendly option is to see if your friends or family would be willing to keep after your children and pets during your move, too.

Whatever you decide, it’s important to account for child and pet safety in your moving budget.

Collect your supplies You’ll need boxes, tape, markers, and padding for your move. Before you start purchasing these items, try finding free supplies instead. A number of grocery and convenience stores set out a pile of boxes daily for the public. While these boxes won’t fit larger items, they are great for books, picture frames, and small knick-knacks. If you have a neighborhood webpage or social media group, ask if anyone has extra moving or shipping boxes. You might be surprised at how many free Amazon boxes you can get from your neighbors.

Instead of buying bubble wrap and paper to wrap your fragile items, use padding that you already own. Dish towels and tablecloths make great padding when boxing up plates and bowls. Towels, blankets, and curtains can be used to pad other fragile items around the house. If you want to use paper to wrap your glasses, start picking up free newspapers in the weeks leading up to your move.

Cleaning your former home Will you need to pay for professional cleaning after the move-out process? Factor in this additional cost, or at least the cost of the cleaning supplies if you plan to do it yourself. A deep-cleaning service in Illinois can cost between $250 and $650 depending on the size of the home.

How to reduce risk of home fires this holiday season Safety might not be the first thing people think of as the holiday season approaches.

Faith, celebrations, decorations, and holiday dinners all come to mind when considering the holiday season. But that doesn’t mean safety should be left out of holiday planning.

Fire safety bears special consideration during the holiday season, when the prevalence of fire hazards like Christmas trees, holiday lighting displays and other decorative items increase the risk for home fires.

Such tragedies can be averted with a few simple safety measures.

• Tend to your tree. Live Christmas trees are awe-inspiring, but they also pose a significant fire risk. The National Fire Protection Association urges celebrants to purchase only healthy trees with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Such trees are less likely to dry out, especially when well-watered throughout the season. Dry trees can catch fire more easily than healthy trees if embers from nearby fireplaces or candles drift in their direction.

• Recognize that location matters when decorating. The NFPA notes that Christmas trees should always be placed at least three feet away from any heat source, including

fireplaces, space heaters, heat vents, candles, and even overhead lights. If decorating with candles, never place them on the tree or on tables where other flammable decorations have already been placed. Chanukah meno-

rahs should never be placed near curtains or other decorations.

• Turn off all lights and extinguish all lit decorative items when leaving the home or going to bed. Lit candles and menorahs

should never be left unattended. The NFPA recommends turning tree lights and exterior decorative lights off when leaving the home or going to bed.

• Utilize a fire screen on fireplaces.

Embers can catch on trees, decorations or anything else that’s flammable if they escape the fireplace. Fire screens prevent that from happening by ensuring embers from burning logs stay in the fireplace. Like candles and menorahs, fires burning in a fireplace should never be left unattended.

Make sure all embers have been extinguished before leaving the home or going to bed.

• Keep discarded trees away from your home. A 2014 analysis from the NFPA found that none of the ten days with the largest share of Christmas tree fires were before Christmas. Dried out trees still pose a fire risk even after they’ve been removed from a home. When discarding a tree at the end of the holiday season, place it at the curb or keep it a safe distance away from your home and garage until you can.

Fire safety measures are an important component of the holiday season that can prevent this joyous time of year from turning tragic.

Decorate with a nose toward inviting holiday aromas Holiday decor is as much about the sights and sounds as it is about the scents of the season. Few things evoke the holiday spirit as much as the aroma of fresh evergreen or spicy cinnamon and cloves. Incorporating inviting aromas into holiday decor can make homes feel even more special.

Filling a home with fragrant decor takes a little ingenuity and planning. Here are some ideas to incorporate the scents of the holiday season into your decor.

• Use a real Christmas tree. An easy way to create a pine-like scent indoors is to select a real Christmas tree. Ask the tree farm which varieties are the most fragrant. If a fresh tree is not possible, fill a decorative bas-

ket with pine cones and evergreen boughs for that woodsy appeal.

• Create a seasonal scented simmer. Take to the stove to make a homemade air infusion from ingredients in and around the house. Simmer pine branches, citrus peels, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and whatever else can be placed in a pot or slow cooker with water. The scents will permeate the house for hours if enough water is added to the mixture.

• Make holiday sachets. Some of the same ingredients for the holiday simmer can be dried and sewn into sachets. Add ribbon and hang on real or artificial trees. Or tuck the pouches into various areas around the house.

• Experiment with scented candles. Scented candles can be found at various stores during the holiday season. Select among popular holiday aromas like pine, cinnamon, apples, and Christmas cookie varieties.

• Utilize essential oils. Natural food stores and other retailers may sell essential oils, which can be diluted and sprayed on surfaces or into the air. Exercise caution around upholstery, or test for staining before use.

• Spend more time in the kitchen. Add delicious scents to the home by way of freshly baked goods or holiday meals. Nothing beats the smell of cookies right out of the oven, and the scents can linger for hours.

• Make beeswax ornaments. Add scented

oils to melted beeswax and pour into molds.

Hang these creations as ornaments on trees or in other areas of the home.

• Craft some “gingerbread” ornaments. A mixture of cinnamon, applesauce and glue can be used to make ornaments or gift tags that resemble gingerbread cookies, and these ornaments have more staying power than actual cookies.

• Design a pretty pomander. Stud an orange with cloves. Cut off the top of the orange and hollow out a place for a small tea light. The warmth of the flame will produce more scent.

Rich and inviting aromas can fill a home with the holiday spirit.

How to maintain hardwood floors Hardwood floors have long been sought after by home buyers. In its 2019 “Remodeling Impact Report,” the National Association of Realtors® revealed that new wood flooring was the fourth most popular project to attract buyers.

Of course, hardwood floors aren’t just for buyers. Homeowners who already have hardwood floors know just how impressive these floors can be, especially when they’re well maintained. Maintaining wood floors is not necessarily as straightforward as it may seem, and homeowners may benefit from a tutorial on how too keep the floors under their feet looking good.

To polish or not to polish?

Polishing floors is an inexpensive way to keep them looking good. But the home improvement experts at BobVila.com note that not all floors can be polished, and determining which ones can depends on the finish. Floors with waterproof barriers such as urethane will benefit from routine polishing.

However, floors with penetrating finishes like tung oil will need to be waxed rather than polished.

What finish is on the floor?

The Hardwood Distributor’s Association

recommends a simple way for homeowners to determine which type of finish is on their hardwood floors. Homeowners are advised to rub a finger across the floor. If no smudge appears, then the floor is surface sealed. If a smudge is created, then the floor has been treated with a penetrating seal. The HDA also notes that recently installed wood floors are likely surface sealed.

How often should floors be polished or waxed?

Wood flooring professionals recommend polishing floors that can be polished once every few months. Waxing wood floors does not need to be done as frequently, and most can benefit from a fresh coat of wax every 12 to 18 months.

What can I do on a daily basis?

Some simple tricks and daily maintenance can help wood floors maintain their impressive look.

• Utilize floor mats. The HDA notes that floor mats near entryways can reduce the time it takes to clean hardwood floors and reduce the wear and tear they endure. For example, tiny particles like dirt can scratch the floor

and contribute to the kind of minor damage that adds up to significant scarring over time.

• Vacuum without a beater bar. Some vacuums contain beater bars, which are designed to pick up human hair, dog hair and other things that conventional vacuums may not be able to pick up. Sweeping with a high-quality broom or microfiber cloth is another way to pick up dirt without damaging floors.

• Use manufacturer-recommended cleaning products. Local home improvement stores sell a host of hardwood floor cleaning products, but the HDA notes that many flooring manufacturers now sell their own hardwood floor cleaners designed specifically for their floors. These products are likely homeowners’ best bets. Homeowners who can’t find them can seek recommendations from a local flooring retailer.

Hardwood floors are attractive for many reasons. And they look even more stunning, and last much longer, when homeowners make an effort to maintain them.

How to winterize a vacant home A vast migration takes place when the temperatures begin to drop in the northernmost areas of the United States and even parts of Canada. No, it has nothing to do with feathered friends finding new roosts or certain mammals getting ready to hibernate.

This migration involves the thousands upon thousands of people who retreat from one residence to head to another.

Snowbirds, as these migratory people are often called, are primarily retirees who split their living arrangements based on weather. Many spend the spring and summer months in one residence, generally in the northern portion of the country. Once the mercury begins to drop there, they trade that home for another in a more temperate locale, such as Florida, Louisiana, Texas, or even overseas. The Palm Beach Post reports that about 145,000 snowbirds flock to Palm

Beach County alone each winter, raising the population by around 11 percent, according to the county’s official figures. Across Florida, an estimated 900,000 to one million seasonal residents stay a month or more every winter.

When snowbirds or other people leave their homes for extended periods of time, it is essential that they winterize properties that will sit vacant for months.

Protect against home damage • Consider turning off the water supply completely if you will be away for an extended period of time; otherwise, a burst pipe may result in significant damage.

• Drain all water in pipes by opening the faucets and flushing the toilets to clear the water from the tanks and bowls. Place non-toxic antifreeze in the toilet bowls to

prevent any remaining water from freezing.

• If you will not be draining pipes and turning off the water, set the heating system to 55 F or higher to help keep the interior and wall cavities warm.

• Keep room and cabinet doors open to allow heat to circulate to areas where pipes are located.

• Shut off the water to outdoor faucets as well as the washing machine.

• Close up openings to the house so that rodents and insects cannot get inside and use a home for shelter.

Keep safe with snow and ice • Make sure that gutters are free of debris, which can lead to potential ice dams and water collection around the foundation of the home.

• Hire someone to clear the sidewalks

and driveway of snow and ice.

• Remove any tree branches that can be weighed down by snow and ice and fall onto the property.

Make the home look lived in • Forward mail to your winter address, stop newspaper delivery and arrange to have any package deliveries picked up while you’re away.

• Put motion-sensitive exterior lights and interior lights on timers. Set lights to come on at various times to discourage thieves or squatters.

• Ensure the alarm system is in good working order.

• Use deadbolts to secure doors and windows.

These steps and others can help protect a home while residents are away.

I’ve never been a big crockpot person. I have one or two, and used them from time to time, but many of my friends and family members rave about using one, about how Vicki convenient it Bennington is, they want multiplies, they use it almost every day, etc., etc.

I was never that enamored.

But lately, I, too, have become a raver of crockpots.

Yes, it’s true. I now find that I feel much more inspired to work in the kitchen earlier in the day. I might chop up my vegetables before I start work, or even wait until a little later, while grabbing my lunch, when I will assemble dinner and toss it into that now treasured item – my shiny red crockpot.

My mom used to make a

hearty beef stew, albeit she used a pressure cooker. I’ve never learned how to use a pressure cooker, but the recipe she used for her stew is definitely something I’ve continued to utilize.

It’s one of those dishes that “stick to your ribs,” and as the weather continues to get colder, it sounded especially good to me.

Technically, the term “stick to your ribs” means “to last long and fortify one well (for food); to sustain one even in the coldest weather.” So how appropriate can you get?

Like my mom’s vegetable soup, the stew was something she could put on the stove in the afternoon, and people could come and go and know there was something hot to eat, or when I was a child, it was one of our hearty suppers that cooked all day and filled the house with a delicious smell. My mom always said

she was a country girl, and she did, in fact, grow up on a farm, eating fresh vegetables and meat that she helped her mother and her sisters cure to store for the winter.

Maybe because I’m a lot like my mother, I find myself liking what might be considered “country cooking” the best. It tastes delicious, reminds me of home, childhood and dishes that made my mom happy to see us eat.

I cooked my stew all day, then right after work, I whipped up some easy biscuits to go along with it. And I broke out some canned sweet pickles from my mom’s recipe to eat on the side (my brother and sister-in-law made the pickles; I haven’t been brave enough to try the arduous process, yet. But they did, and their pickles are on the mark).

And of course, there was lots of leftover stew. It’s another one of those two-day meals you gotta love. If you don’t like eating the same thing two nights in a row, store in individual containers in the freezer, and you have a ready-made lunch anytime you want.

HEARTY BEEF STEW 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces 1⁄4 cup flour 3or 4 potatoes, cut into chunks 1 stalk celery, sliced 1 1⁄2 cups beef broth 1 garlic clove 1 onion, chopped 2 teaspoons Kitchen Bouquet (optional) Salt and pepper, to taste Place meat in crockpot. Mix flour, salt, pepper and pour over meat; stir to coat meat.

Add remaining ingredients and stir to mix well. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 to 6 hours. Stir stew thoroughly before serving.

There’s plenty to get you to the movies again

By Robert D. Grubaugh You might not have heard about it or seen an adequate amount of news coverage on the topic, but moviegoing is back!

No, it’s never going to be what it was pre-pandemic, but there are real movies coming out every week and most of them are worthwhile for your cinematic needs.

I know of this -- my cinematic needs are great.

Just this past week I saw three amazing movies that had me glad I found three opportunities to get out of the house to see them. Kristen Stewart does her career best work in “Spencer” as the heightof-her-suffering Lady Diana. She also does it as a blonde, which I think flatters her more than what I remember as the pouty vampire in all those decade-old “Twilight” flicks.

Her take on the embattled “Peoples’ Princess” is raw, a bit blue and incredibly desperate. It’s also hard to imagine that we can take any accuracy at face value.

I’ll continue to be fascinated by the machination of the House of Windsor.

“Dune” also slays my expectations. The special effects and world-building were up to snuff.

This is important since it will become a sequel in future, with installments to give us the whole story of the battle for Arrakis.

I’d welcome spending more time with Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya in their young royal roles.

Marvel also put out their newest movie, “Eternals,” on the big screen. It’s not their best effort, but it shows that the largest in ticket sales still has faith in selling them at your local box office.

“Eternals” is a gettingthe-band-back-together picture.

The main difference between it and the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that these

band members (including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gemma Chan as ageless intergalactic superbeings) never had their own individual movies made with their back stories, like “The Avengers.”

For the first half of “Eternals,” a three-hour epic, we get to know each member’s specific power, motivations and the dynamics of their relationships. Despite living together on a mission for thousands of years, the various Eternals don’t all get along or even care for each other all that much.

The second half explores a rather convoluted plot by the 10 co-leads to defend Earth from an ulterior motive planted a millen-

nia ago by their boss, Arishem (a vague, hyper-charged superbeing voiced by David Kaye). Harry Styles has a cameo during a mid-credits scene that also introduces Kit Harrington (of “Game of Thrones” fame) as future additions to this world that is built in less-interesting-than-”Dune” fashion.

In-person movie attendance continues to be thwarted by streaming. Netflix and Disney Plus are constantly putting out new content to give you reasons to stay away from movie theaters.

I get it. Home-viewing is comfortable and easier than ever. But don’t give up on your local neighborhood theater.

One thing I’ve noted while screening a lot of holiday movie trailers lately is that marketers are going out of their way to mention how a hot prospect is being released “Only in Theatres.”

The popcorn is amazing, too! I say that just in case you weren’t already planning to check out “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “King Richard” (both open Friday), “West Side Story” (Dec. 10), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Dec. 17), or “Sing 2” (Dec. 22).

I’m also betting that there won’t be a theater in St. Louis that doesn’t want to show “American Underdog” around Christmastime when the Kurt Warner story finally hits the big screens. I can’t wait!

Review: Adele goes beyond heartbreak in powerful ‘30’ album

“30,” Adele (Columbia Records) Coming out of a divorce, one might expect Adele to write an album of heartbreak ballads. But, to expect anything short of the full spectrum of emotions from “30” would do the Grammy winner a disservice.

As one of the greatest voices of our time, it is no surprise that some of Adele’s shining moments on the album are on tracks bare enough that the strength of her vocals stand on their own. What is maybe more surprising is the delightfulness of the songs that are a departure from her normal style.

Adele’s opener is unlike any she’s written before. “Strangers By Nature” whisks the listener into a black-and-white Audrey Hepburn-era film — whimsical and at times ominous. The album is given theatrical bookends with closer “Love Is a Game” mimicking some of these dramatic tones. It is a triumphant conclusion with harmonies in the chorus which give a nod to ‘60s groups like the Supremes.

In between, there are songs about heartbreak and also love songs — to her son, to new loves (or, at least, those she’d like trying to love) and to herself.

Adele stretches herself on “30,” dipping into genres and tones that show her ability to deviate from more somber chart toppers like “Hello” and “Someone Like You.” There’s the bubble gum pop “Cry Your Heart Out,” dance anthem “Oh My God” and the Western-tinged “Can I Get It” — a song that is so divergent from typical Adele that it calls to mind Beyoncé’s “Daddy Lessons.” In “My Little Love” and “All Night Parking,” Adele brings R&B to the record.

While there are jubilant moments on the album, Adele’s diary style songwriting ensures that pain is also present on the 12-track “30.” “My Little Love” is a movingly personal track which includes voice recordings of Adele comforting her young son and even crying as she describes her loneliness.

The pain is also tangible on “To Be Loved.” Its sparse production serves Adele beautifully. There is nothing to smooth out the emotion as her voice teeters on cracking.

The second half of the LP is much quieter than the first, filled with ballads more typical of the British singer. “Woman Like Me” shows her quiet confidence — she alludes to feelings of guilt and uncertainty

in “My Little Love” and “I Drink Wine,” but in this song, she reasserts her own self-worth.

“Complacency is the worst trait to have, are you crazy?” she croons, “You ain’t ever had, ain’t ever had a

woman like me.”

If “30” is in fact a snapshot of the person Adele is at this moment in time, it is clear that the six years since “25” have led to growth and a more realized version of herself. There

are traces of her younger self, but a renewed self-awareness.

“All I do is bleed into someone else,” she sings on “To Be Loved.”

“I’ll be the one to catch myself this time.”

“Through the recommendation of Edwardsville designer Jim Harper, a great friend of OE, we connected with Chis Ryan, who runs the St. Louis production company, Once Films. With a film and audio team, we captured the spirit of the season on film, to share with audiences from the safety of their homes. To our amazement, these videos reached over 40,000 views across YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.”

People also signed up for OE’s mailing list simply to receive a daily holiday performance delivered directly to their inboxes (otherwise full of Zoom invites and Amazon orders at the time!), Hopkins noted.

Likewise, due to the pandemic, a live broadcast of Opera Edwardsville at Dunham Hall is a special addition to the concert experience. Not only is Opera Edwardsville the first local organization to be invited to the SIUE Arts and Issues stage, but the concert will be the first that Arts & Issues broadcasts live, starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at , which has not recorded a live broadcast of an event until it will do so Dec. 18.will be broadcast live from Dunham Hall, on the SIUE campus, in a special broadcast online at www.operaedwardsville.org/home/december2021 .

Chic hotel opening in New York City celebrates Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) — Visitors to the latest chic hotel to open in New York's theater district can easily walk to any Broadway show — or they can stay inside and celebrate them.

The Civilian — a 203-room hotel with bars, lounges and a bistro — is packed with hundreds of pieces of Broadway art, including sketches, set models, costume pieces, photographs and artifacts that show theater past and present.

"I think people don't realize that this neighborhood is just like a walking history of so much," said award-winning architect and theater designer David Rockwell during a tour of the hotel he helped craft. "So I think it deserves to have a place that's dedicated to that."

The 27-story building — at 305 W. 48th Street, between 8th and 9th avenues — is from Sixty Collective hotelier Jason Pomeranc, who says the goal is to immerse visitors in a theatrical experience. The Civilian opens Nov. 24.

Nearly every inch of the Civilian has been designed with a theatrical flourish, from the marquee-inspired lighting, dramatic curtains, stage-like elements to the raw industrial materials of backstage life.

On display are set models of shows — like "Hadestown" designed

by Rachel Hauck and "Slave Play" by Clint Ramos — and sketches from "Chicago" designed by William Ivy Long. The hotel plans to cycle new items in every year or so.

Wallcoverings throughout the guestroom floors and elevators are taken from abstracted details from costume designs by Isabel and Ruben Toledo ("After Midnight") and William Ivey Long ("Beetlejuice" and "Hairspray"). Creators hope this is a chance for the talent offstage to shine.

"I'm always amazed when I work on a project and there's a moment in the show when you realize 25 people touch that moment to make it work.

So, in some ways, this is a chance to be exposed to all of those different people," said Rockwell.

One wall area displays art from 20 artists and students who offered works inspired by a quote — "It's a city of strangers/Some come to work/Some to play" — from the musical "Company." A piano — lent

There's also a private library finished in royal blue hues and marquee lightbulbs where visitors can find replica guns and a crown from "Hamilton," the original set model for "Company" as well red boots from "Kinky Boots" and a pink shrug from "Cabaret." "This really feels like a dressing room," says Rockwell.

Upstairs, the guest rooms — a two-person Cozy or a 4-person Spacious — have one of two color schemes — deep blue or wine-maroon — hand-painted details, four-poster beds, upholstered benches and framed costume and set sketches. High design meets homey.

On the beds are pillows with abstracted patterns by costume designers Jeff Mahshie and David

Zinn. Luggage fits under the bed, and bathrooms with glazed porcelain sinks have heated floors.

"Even though the rooms are more petite than what we've done in the past, I don't believe that the guest should have to sacrifice anything on a visual or textual experience, whether it's the rich velvets from the fabrics or the tile in the bathroom or the quality of sheets and linens and pillows," says Pomeranc. "The quality level should not diminish because of the room size."

Visitors enter through a lobby that feels like a stage door and into a vestibule with an abstract interpretation of marquee lighting imbedded into the ceiling. A bank of theater seats rescued from an upstate theater sit along a brick wall and visitors climb a set of metal spiral stairs past a cur-

tain to the second-floor bar, lounge and library.

"Does it feel like you're stepping into kind of the fly loft you always wanted to get in?" asks Rockwell and, to be sure, there's a strong "The Phantom of the Opera" feel.

There are photos throughout, starting in the lobby with blackand-white photos by Little Fang, the husband-and-wife team known for their opening-night portraits. Each floor will have framed art in the hallways clustered around a theme. The fourth floor, for example, is dedicated to rehearsal shots, with photos of Michael Bennett at "Dreamgirls" and the cast of "Miss Saigon."

In the restaurant are 41 round, custom sconces featuring sketches of the Broadway theaters by set designers including Derek McLane, Es Devlin,

Scott Pask, Tony Walton, Mimi Lien and Rockwell. A roof deck to open in the spring will have an enclosed lounge and bar.

Pomeranc hopes to create a series of different types of public space experiences, from turning the lounge from a place where people can work and communicate during the day to a music-filled space in the evening to relax. "It really speaks to the journey of the guest that's looking for an authentically New York experience," he said.

Partial proceeds from the Civilian will be donated to the American Theatre Wing, which also has supplied the hotel with images from its photo archives. Wing President and CEO Heather Hitchens says a watering hole for the theater community is deeply needed.

By The Associated Press It's that time of year to grab some hot coco, don your coziest sweater and put on some festive tunes. Whether you're dealing with holiday heartbreak or reuniting with loved ones after an uncertain two years, there's music for everyone this season.

Associated Press journalists sampled a variety of albums, offering up the early gift of holiday release reviews for Kelly Clarkson, Pentatonix, Pistol Annies, Norah Jones and more. ___ Pentatonix, "Evergreen" (RCA Records) It's not really Christmas until the gang from Pentatonix release new material and this year they've stretched the definition of Christmas material.

The a capella quintet offer classics like "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" but also tackle songs not often caroled, like Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and Joni Mitchell's "River." It's risky and let's just say the originals are safe.

Better is when they give "I Saw Three Ships" a propulsive beat and when they ask Alessia Cara over to lead on "Frosty the Snowman." They even give the Beach Boys a run with their smashing cover of "Little Saint Nick."

Pentatonix boldly take on a Beatle — Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" — and it's not half bad, as well as contributing a twangy original song, the title track "Evergreen," which, it's only right, must be covered by another artist for their Christmas album next year.

"You ruined all my favorite things," she sings on the jubilant "Christmas Isn't Canceled (Just You)." "But you won't take Christmas from me." The song's playful, defiant cheer make it an early stand out.

Another album highlight is "Glow." Clarkson's voice melding with Stapleton's is intoxicating.

"Nothing has changed, I still wish you could be wrapped up in my arms spending Christmas with me," they sing.

Whether she's reclaiming Christmas for herself or reminiscing on the ghost of Christmas past, Clarkson covers all the feelings brought on by the holidays with flare and fun.

— Ragan Clark ••• Pistol Annies, "Hell of a Holiday" (Sony Music Nashville) Let's face it, most Christmas music idealizes a holiday season that is sometimes more stressful than sentimental.

"Hell of a Holiday," the first Christmas music from the trio of country singers the Pistol Annies, is for those holiday survivors.

Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley bring both humor and harmony on a collection of 10 original songs and three classics.

"Harlan County Coal" is inspired by Presley's hillbilly family gatherings, complete with shotgun shell tree ornaments. The fun bop "Snow Globe" would be a great add to a holiday party playlist, while their cover of "If We Make It Through December" is perfect for those dark chilly nights. The trio put a break on the hustle to remember the reason for the season by singing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus.

If the holidays have you both excited and exhausted, the Annies have enough cheer to get you ready to face the new year.

Hall ••• Hiss Golden Messenger, "O Come All Ye Faithful" (Merge Records) It would be hard to find a better fit for Christmas in pandemic times than the new holiday release by Hiss Golden Messenger. It's wistful but not hopeless, fully cognizant of the difficulties we've all been living through, and yet it's encouraging. In many ways it feels like an extension of the band's last album, "Quietly Blowing It," a truly constructive take on the hard times wrought

by COVID-19.

"It's Christmas, baby, thank God we made it," lead singer and creative force M.C. Taylor sings

dolefully on "Hung Fire," one of several sublimely spiritual new compositions that could find their way into holiday rotation for years to come.

The album's style is soulful, even majestic, on original Taylor compositions, surprising covers and holiday classics that only gain in stature by being re-worked in the band's laid-back Americana style.

Ultimately, an excellent band that just keeps getting better is a perfect match for a holiday season that comes upon us in less than perfect times.

— Scott Stroud ••• Amanda Shires, "For Christmas" (Thirty Tigers) Singer-songwriter Amanda Shires' Christmas list includes beach vacations, a boat, cold hard cash and a date with comedian Larry David, but she's not sharing her presents, so take a hike. Those are the sort of weirdly wonderful sentiments that appear on Shires' holiday record, "For Christmas," a collection of mostly original songs that feel a bit like a Christmas Eve fever dream.

With her high warbling vocals and her poetic lyrics over pianos, Shires wanders through the holidays with an eye on the

little details. She's gussying up that pine tree on "A Real Tree This Year," and detailing a sexy holiday tryst on "Blame It on the Mistletoe."

Her "Silent Night" is depressing and gloomy, which, if we're being honest, is not an unusual feeling at the holidays, especially after the last two years.

But the best tracks are the ones where she's backed in harmony by the always impressive McCrary Sisters, such as "Magic Ooooooh" and "Gone For Christmas."

— Kristin M. Hall ••• Norah Jones, "I Dream of Christmas" (Blue Note Records) "I want to be a Jolly Jones," Norah Jones sings on the opener of "I Dream of Christmas."

And a Jolly Jones she is.

On her 13-track debut holiday album, Jones' sultry vocals lend themselves well to Christmas songs. She reimagines some covers, bringing a Latin influence to "Run Rudolph Run" with bongos and maracas and doing a ragtime rendition of "Christmas Don't Be Late."

On others, she pays homage to the roots of the originals. The influence of Vince Guaraldi on "Christmas Time Is Here" is fully present. Likewise, Norah Jones

does little to deviate from Elvis Presley's bluesy "Blue Christmas."

Also on the album are six originals by Jones. After two years of uncertainty, Jones is ready to gather with loved ones and feel the comforts of Christmas again in "Christmas Calling (Jolly Jones)." In "You're Not Alone," she brings spiritual undertones to a time that's lonely for many ("If you are tired/And you are scared/You're not alone").

Perfect for curling up by the fire, a snowy road trip or a holiday dinner, "I Dream of Christmas" is easy listening Christmas jazz.

— Ragan Clark ••• Kristin Chenoweth, "Happiness Is... Christmas" (Concord Records) Pretty much everything Kristin Chenoweth touches is magical and Christmas is no different.

The dozen tracks on the Broadway and TV actor's "Happiness Is... Christmas" showcase an artist who can go from angelic to vixen, funny to heartfelt.

It's her first holiday offering since 2008's "A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas" and it kicks off with a medley — "Happiness (Is Christmas)"/"Christmas Time Is Here" — that includes a sly tribute to one of her musicals, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." Later, try not to swing dance to another medley, the jazzy "(Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man With The Bag"/"Jingle Bell Rock."

Her "Merry Christmas Baby" with Keb' Mo' is so sexy it might be raunchy (and, yes, a raunchy Christmas song is just what we need.) One tune later, "Christmas Lullaby," is ethereal and celestial.

Her version of the Carpenters' "Merry Christmas, Darling" has a slight twang and deep melancholy.

And it's not all Christmas. In a nod to inclusiveness, she absolutely shines signing Stephen Schwartz's "The Chanukah Song (We Are Lights)." Later she will make you crack up with Andrew Lippa's "Santa, I've Got a Bone To Pick With You!" ("I got a thong/ But then my mother got the same"). Chenoweth, Christmas, classic.
