By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — After a great embrace the first time, the Community Portrait Project continues with the exhibition “Eye Contact.”

In last year’s Community Portrait Project, Alton artist Monica Mason, who conceptualized the series of paintings, portrays people of Alton who make the community a better place to live. Now, in the Community Portrait Project’ continued series exhibition — “Eye Contact,” it’s the second chapter of the Community Portrait Project.

Eye Contact shares some of the first set of community portraits, along with several new portraits. Mason has planned a third chapter of the Community Portrait

Project to stage later this year, which will be all of the new portraits she currently is painting.

“I decided to make my definition of ‘making the community a better place’ something loose and intuitive, to allow for freedom in my choices of models,” she explained.

“I also wanted to paint a range of people, to depict, as honestly as possible, the diversity of people in my community.

“So often, the noteworthy people of our past (and present) are depicted in art as so heroic that they can become cold, characterless archetypes, rather than real living, breathing people,” Mason said. “This deprives us of any genuine connection to them. It creates heroes who are out of

reach.”

Mason’s goal has been to create an intimate, emotional bond between the person she’s painted (the modern-day hero or heroine) and the viewer. In so doing, she’s painted the expressions in these faces as intimate, informal and approachable.

“These modern day ‘heroes’ don’t sit on pedestals, they sit in chairs,” she said, “next to us, with us, sharing our space.“ Mason’s initial motivation was to create an opportunity for the people in her community to feel “seen,” to feel recognized for their contribution to the community — whether for civic engagement, volunteerism and contributions to the cultural landscape or simply providing kind-

ness, moral support and inspiration to others, she explained.

“But these portraits aren’t just about commemorating people for their good deeds alone,” she said. “They are also about painting the inner life of the models and creating an emotive connection with the viewer, a sense of familiarity and bonding with another.

“So often these days, we spend so much time buried in the false ‘faces’ of our phones, that we inadvertently avoid meaningful eye contact with others, especially those outside our immediate sphere. My hope is to

The importance of connectiveness is obvious during the last 10 months within the framework of a global pandemic as every community is engaged in social distancing.

“Many of us avoiding social contacts, many wearing masks, we’ve been deprived of the easy community interactions we once enjoyed,” Mason said.

“We’ve been deprived of some of the nuanced visual communication with one another through facial expression, as well.

“When we venture into the grocery store, our masked faces are so covered, we sometimes cease bothering to make eye contact with others,” she said. “This can lead to a disconnect from our fellow community members. With political divisions and social justice issues heating up, as well, now, more than ever, it is vital to recognize our shared humanity.

Now more than ever, it is vital to make eye contact, to recognize that those faces beneath the masks are still our neighbors.

They still share many of the same hopes and dreams as we do. I continue to be

How to start exercising at home

A healthy diet and an active lifestyle are great ways to achieve a healthy weight and good overall health. Many people no doubt associate exercise with fitness centers and gym memberships. While gyms certainly are effective places to break a sweat, exercising at home can be an effective way to get fit as well.

Working out at home may require some creativity, as even homeowners with gyms in their basements may not have as much equipment at their disposal as they would at a local fitness center. ] Body weight exercises Body weight exercises include push-ups, planks, squats, and lunges. Alternating incline and positioning of the body when performing some of these exercises is a great way to work various muscle groups. Body weight exercises do not necessarily require equipment, and that may disappoint some people. That’s because, with no added weight — and only one’s own body weight to provide resistance — it’s difficult for a person to challenge himself or herself effectively and gradually build up progress.

Get outdoors for cardio A mix of cardiovascular activity, which puts a strain on the heart and lungs to build up

stamina, can help shave off the pounds when paired with strength training exercises. Take to the great outdoors near home to get in a good cardio workout.

Rally Health, a digital, data-based health advisory company, says that walking can constitute a cardio workout if one goes at a brisk pace of around three miles per hour. Walking on an incline also can constitute vigorous exercise that’s on par with running or biking, particularly when it’s a steep hill.

Home-based cardio workouts also can include cycling, swimming in a backyard pool or playing a pickup sports game with the kids.

Set up a home gym With a few barbells, dumbells and a weight bench, it’s easy to create a home gym in a basement or garage. Extra equipment, such as TRX resistance training equipment or an elliptical machine, can be added to make the gym more complete.

A home gym also can be a place to do strength and stretching exercises like yoga or pilates.

Many people find that they can effectively workout at home with little to no equipment necessary. With such convenience, individuals may find they make more time for exercise, which is an important component of a healthy lifestyle.

How to clean and maintain your new cookware Cookware is as varied as the foods cooks can prepare. Running the gamut from ceramic to cast iron to stainless steel, cookware is available in various styles that fit cooks’ lifestyles and budgets.

Home cooks have more options than ever before when outfitting their kitchen equipment, and different cooking materials may raise questions about how to clean and maintain new items. Here’s a look at some popular cookware materials and how to care for those pots and pans.

Ceramic Ceramic coatings are made from inorganic, nonmetallic film layers on hard materials to create nonstick surfaces that are generally resistant to scratching. Because they can be safer than some other nonstick alternatives, some consumers may prefer ceramic to other materials.

Even though ceramic is durable, it is not impervious to damage. Use wooden, silicone, plastic, or nylon utensils when cooking with ceramic. Metal utensils may mar the surface.

Even though the cookware is nonstick, using a small bit of oil or butter can help prolong this feature. Cooking sprays are not recommended.

Ceramic should be handwashed with soap and water to keep it pristine. Some people recommended periodic deep cleanings with baking soda and water to remove any residue.

Cast iron Cast iron cookware has been around for generations. One of the key things to remember about cast iron is that a proper seasoning of the material will help cooking and cleanup.

General instructions for seasoning a cast-iron skillet involves heating it up on the stovetop

until it’s smoking hot, then rubbing a little oil into it and allowing it to cool. According to cast iron cookware manufacturer Lodge, each time you cook, you will help maintain this seasoning.

Cast iron can rust, so it should be handwashed with a stiff scrubber (no soap) and dried immediately. Rub a thin coating of vegetable oil to protect it from moisture.

Stainless steel Stainless steel materials are versatile in the kitchen because they do not rust. Plus, pots and pans can move easily between the stovetop and oven. Because stainless steel is not nonstick, heating up the cookware first before adding oil and food can prevent items from sticking to the surface.

Cleaning may require soaking in warm, soapy water and then scrubbing with nonabrasive sponges. Specialty nonabrasive cleaners designed to restore stainless steel from discoloration also can be used periodically.

Copper Copper cookware is quick to warm and distributes heat very evenly. They are often a tool of the trade when heat-sensitive recipes call for careful temperature control.

Copper is highly reactive and isn’t food-safe on its own. Copper usually features a protective layer of nickel or stainless steel to make it food-safe. That means avoiding abrasive cleansers or sponges.

Another rule of thumb is to reduce the heat under copper pans and pots because they are such good conductors of heat. This will prevent stuck-on foods, making for easier cleanup.

Factors to consider when choosing carpeting

When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well.

Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. they’re higher on the comfort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, which is more flat and dense, helps mask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber.

Padding Padding can impact the way carpeting feels and how long it lasts. It isn’t always necessary to purchase the most expensive or thickest padding. However, it is wise to pick a pad that matches the type of carpeting you’re selecting and one that aligns with how you plan to use the room. You may be able to go with a thinner pad in low-traffic rooms and beneath dense carpeting like berber. In high-traffic rooms, choose a thicker, more durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from coming apart over time. It pays to invest in a padding that will last as well.

Installation Select a reliable carpet retailer and installer for your business. Competent installers will lay the carpeting in the correct manner so that it will look beautiful and maintain its durability for the life of the product. Shop around to find the right installer or even do the work yourself if you feel capable.

6 steps to organize your home office

Remote working has become popular in recent years, but the “working-from-home” economy bloomed exponentially as the world was forced to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Begin with the desk

The desk is the primary spot where work will take place. The right desk accessories can provide visual appeal and also serve practical purposes. It’s All About the Sides

Sometimes, you see recipes for “Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes,” but, come on people, when you add the cheese, they become au gratin potatoes. That’s exactly why scalloped potatoes are my favorite — because they are potatoes in a creamy sauce “sans” cheese.

So many cream sauces — on potatoes or anything else for that matter — are Vicki full of hidden Bennington cheeses, which is something I am always on the lookout for, simply because I don’t want the cheese.

Believe me, it’s not an easy proposition — to live cheese-free — especially when eating out.

Fortunately, when you cook your own dishes, you can leave the cheese out (at least out of my portion) if you want to, but it’s even better to find a recipe that legitimately does not call for cheese. Thus, I chose scalloped potatoes.

Now, the night I made them, we started out with shrimp cocktails.

You really can’t get much easier than that, but I have never been that picky about size of shrimp or even what cocktail sauce we used. But … I ran onto a recipe for dressing the shrimp up a little, and then dipping them into the most delectable cocktail sauce I’ve ever had.

You can take a seemingly good food that’s easy to serve and certainly step it up a notch. And it’s not like it was all that difficult to put in a little more effort. Give it a try and see if you agree if it was worth it.

Following the shrimp appetizer, I served the scalloped potatoes with simple steamed green beans and baked chicken breasts. But with Valentine’s Day coming up, you could take the shrimp cocktail and the scalloped potatoes to a new level by serving them with steaks or

pork tenderloin to create a luscious romantic meal. Or dress them down and serve them with hamburgers! Both are super easy.

And for those of you who have relied on boxed scalloped potatoes, this recipe makes a huge difference when you consider the hardest part about it is peeling the potatoes.

SCALLOPED POTATOES 4 tablespoons butter 2 1/4 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes 2 cups milk 3 tablespoons flour 1/3 cup onion, thinly diced 1 tablespoon sea salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray or grease a 9- by 9-inch square or oval casserole dish. Peel and thinly slice potatoes to about 1/8-inch thick (use a mandolin if you have one. I just discovered how much easier it can make the job). In medium saucepan, heat butter and onions for about 2 minutes. Add flour, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, add milk, then potatoes, and cook, while stirring for about 5 minutes.

Pour into prepared casserole dish. Bake until lightly browned and bubbly, about 30 minutes.

Remove from oven and let cool and thicken for about 10 minutes. Serve.

SHRIMP 1/4 cup sea salt 1/4 cup sugar 2 lemons 1 pound extra-large shrimp, deveined 3 cups ice Scoop the ice into a large bowl and fill halfway with cold water. Set aside. Combine salt, sugar, and 6 cups water in a large saucepan. Cut lemons in half, squeeze juice into pot, and toss in lemon halves. Bring liquid to a boil, stirring to dissolve salt and sugar, then remove pot from heat. Add shrimp and poach, uncovered, 3 1/2 minutes. Drain the shrimp and then place them in the ice bath. Let shrimp sit for about 10 minutes. Drain, pat dry and peel. Pat dry again. Cover

and chill until ready to serve.

COCKTAIL SAUCE 1 cup chili sauce 2 tablespoons lemon juice (preferably fresh) 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish 2 teaspoons coarse black pepper 3/4 teaspoon hot sauce Sliced lemon wedges for serving Preparation Mix chili sauce, lemon juice, horseradish, pepper and hot sauce in a small bowl. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

I served the shrimp hanging off the sides of vintage “Marie Antoinette-style” champagne glasses with the cocktail sauce in the center, topped with a lemon wedge.

“A Swim in a Pond in the Rain,” billed as a master class in how to read and write, is effectively two books in one: seven classic Russian short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy and Gogol paired with funny, lively, profound essays by Saunders explaining their art, craft and enduring appeal.

Saunders, the bestselling author of “CivilWarLand in Bad D e c l i n e , ” “ Te n t h o f December” and “Lincoln in the Bardo,” is the best possible guide to have on this invigorating tour through FictionLand because although he thinks like the MacArthur “genius” that he is, he talks like the guy sitting next to you at the bar.

For instance, in Chekhov’s “In the Cart,” he refers to a character as “an amiable doofus” ‚Äî not exactly a literary term of art, but in this case, a spot-on description.

Typically, he reserves his commentary until the end, although in this particular

story, he interrupts the narrative a page at a time to explain what Chekhov is doing and the effect it has on us as readers. Is it irritating? Well, a little, but ultimately, it’s useful because it forces us to slow down and return to the slower rhythms of a college classroom, where one’s only job is to think hard and think well.

Beyond the realm of literary fiction, Saunders may be best known for a 2013 commencement address at Syracuse that went viral, in which he urged graduating students to “err in the direction of kindness.” Among its many virtues, “A Swim in

a Pond in the Rain” could be seen as a prolonged exercise in kindness ‚Äî Saunders wants to make us better readers so we might become better citizens of earth.

“The part of the mind that reads a story is also the part that reads the world,” he says. “It can deceive us, but it can also be trained to accuracy; it can fall into disuse and make us more susceptible to lazy, violent, materialistic forces, but it can also be urged back to life, transforming us into more active, curious, alert readers of reality.”

Hanks in new modern-day Western

For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — Given the unusual patterns our lives have taken this holiday season, I knew Christmas Eve would be out of the ordinary. It’s our big family holiday every year, and has been since the early 1980s, when my mom’s siblings were all getting married and having babies.

There’s not usually a good reason to miss out on the hoopla, but COVID-19 appears to be the one.

Feeling down, because of the cancellations, I turned to a faithful friend to get the holiday back on track. All it took was Tom Hanks to lift my sour mood. He comes riding in on a horse in “News of the World,” which opened Christmas Day and gave a reason to cheer the season that we especially

needed in 2020.

“News of the World’s” basic storyline seems tailor-made for me. Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), a Confederate officer from Texas, becomes a “traveling man” after the war, going from town to town reading newspapers to the public sharing news of the state of the union. He’s refined and articulate. His suit is as neatly groomed as his beard. There’s an air of showmanship in his voice as he reads the headlines in Texas communities, such as Wichita Falls, Gainesville and Dallas. Local news, such as floods and cholera outbreaks, are always popular, and stories explaining how Gen. Ulysses S. Grant is rebuilding the nation are met with scorn and a smattering of “boos.” Kidd’s rates aren’t steep and he always receives rousing applause.

Trouble finds the wandering minstrel on the trail, as it does in most Westerns. The

captain finds an overturned wagon on his way to another engagement befriending a Native American girl, Johanna (Helena Zengel, a breakout child performer in his first English language movie) being transported to an army outpost a few miles away. Her previous escort, a black man, was lynched by local roughnecks, despite his mission to return her to the family she’d been kidnapped from years earlier.

Kidd tries, at first, to leave her with the army. No luck since an Indian agent is unavailable at the outpost. He calls in a favor to a former solider (Ray McKinnon) and his wife (Mare Winningham) to host the girl for a few months. She runs away in the night. It ultimately falls to the kindly captain to take his new charge south to San Antonio to turn her over to a distant uncle and aunt who are the only family left for the headstrong girl.

The long route is unknown, desperadoes

everywhere. Think of this as “Dance with Wolves,” but as a road trip flick.

The language divide makes a lot of the dialogue in “News of the World” one sided, but we know from years of experience that Hanks can handle the dialogue. Johanna is far more animated, than, say, a volleyball, for instance. Together they battle a trio of gangsters who are trying to acquire Johanna for nefarious purposes. Later, Kidd leads an insurrection in a railroad town where the neighborhood boss (Bill Camp) threatens to kill them for trespassing.

Hanks is great — as always. “News of the World” is directed by Paul Greengrass.

“News of the World” runs 118 minutes and is rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, thematic material and some language. I give this film three stars out of four.

‘Wildly silly,’ perceptive Amber Ruffin earns TV spotlight

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES — If you’re someday in need of a plus-one to liven an unpromising party, consider Amber Ruffin. In fact, skip the party and just hang with Ruffin, whose weekly comedy show is proving her to be excellent company.

Ruffin’s exuberant charm can and should lure you in to Peacock’s weekly “The Amber Ruffin Show,” but expect humor that’s incisive and impressively deft, including on race, politics and the sunny side of life, such as it is.

A memorable moment from Ruffin’s show last fall was a lullaby she sang oh-so-sweetly: “The sun has set, it’s time to go to bed. Brush your teeth and rest your sleepy head. When you wake in the morning, you’ll rise and do your best.

Then in November, your vote will be suppressed.”

Trained in improv and a writer on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” since 2014, Ruffin was ready for her star turn on Peacock: The streaming service ordered 10 additional episodes of the weekly show that debuted last fall, with new half-hours released on Fridays.

Ruffin easily shifts from “wildly silly to incredibly insightful and moving,” Meyers said. “There are very few people that can swing back and forth as ably as Amber can, and that’s been on full display on our show and even more so on hers.”

Tarik Davis, her longtime comedy partner and an actor and singer, is Ruffin’s game sidekick through jokes, skits and duets.

The Omaha, Nebraska, native spoke with The Associated Press about her start in entertainment, how she and other Black women are making their mark, and the book Ruffin wrote with her sister, Lacey Lamar, about routine brushes with racism ‚and yes, “You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey” is funny as well as eye-opening. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.

AP: What pulled you out of your hometown and to Chicago to pursue a career in comedy?

Ruffin: I used to improvise in Omaha and it was very fun, and we would go to Chicago to do the Chicago Improv Festival, which was a big deal. You set to see real improvisers you only ever heard stories about. So one year I’m there and Charna Halpern, who runs the iO Theater in Chicago, said, ‘If you move here, you’ll have a full-time job within a year.’ And

she was right, I did.

AP: Did you know what your ultimate goal was?

Ruffin: Everything that happens to me is a surprise. I did not see myself ever going to New York. And when I got this job writing for Seth, I knew people wrote for late-night shows, but you just don’t hear a lot about that and certainly don’t hear about Black people doing it, so it just didn’t occur to me that it was a thing.

Then when I got this job, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m just never going to know what is the next thing.’ I don’t try to guess and I don’t try to plan anything. But I have to be trying to do a very good job, because it seems like that what’s driving everything is my working hard and hopefully doing a good job.

AP: Amid demands for diversity, a number of Black women are coming into their own as successful writers, producers and performers, including you, Robin Thede and Issa Rae. Why do you think that’s the case?

Ruffin: Most of the Black women I know take care of what is wrong, and no matter what their job is, they’re doing four people’s jobs. They’re always making sure that everything’s taken care of, and when no one else will do it, it falls to us. I think once people started hiring Black women to write on shows, they realized we won’t just take care of the things you asked us to hand in. We’ll produce the (expletive) out of stuff. I think people are slowly realizing that is Black women behavior, and then once you put some money behind it, whoa, baby, we’ll do all the work.

AP: Your sister has made a habit of keeping notes on her encounters with racism, at work and elsewhere. How did you decide that would make for a book?

Ruffin: When something racist happens to her, she calls me on the phone, and she’ll be telling the story and I’ll be doubled over laughing and crying because it’s hilarious. That’s everybody who gets discriminated against, like when you were talking to your boss and he couldn’t stop looking at your boobs. I was on my way for a meeting about doing a book and Lacey called and said, ‘You will never believe this. We got T-shirts at work because we met our goal, and all the supervisors except for me are white and almost everyone else is Black, and the shirts say “#Wewinnin.”

AP: What would you like readers to take away from her experiences?

Ruffin: I hope they look back at what society is and what workplaces are and go, ‘I’ve helped create a place where stories like these aren’t welcome.’

Main Street welcomes Phelps as assistant director

The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — Chloe Phelps was recently named assistant director at Main Street Community Center.

Phelps, of Edwardsville, will oversee the center programs and volunteers. She is a graduate of Edwardsville High School and SIUE where she studied communications. She brings to the center experience in program management with a desire to grow her career in nonprofit management.

Phelps has a close family and values the influence her

grandparents have had in her life.

“I love connecting with the different generations and getting to hear so many stories of the world that are not necessarily taught in schools. I’m looking to honor our history while creating new processes and programs that are all beneficial to our seniors. Through their feedback and my drive to show them the appreciation they deserve, I believe there are great things to come for the Center and I can’t wait to be a part of it,” she said.

Executive Director Sara Berkbigler is impressed by Phelps’ enthusiasm and love for the older generation.

“Chloe brings a passion for learning and helping others to her position,” Berkbigler said. “She is full of ideas and excitement that will benefit our program offerings and provide a quality of service to our clients. I look forward to seeing her grow in the position and believe she, in turn, will help the Center grow with her.”

STL Freighways touts investments over $1B The Edge ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Regional Freightway helped to advance the bi-state St. Louis region as a world-class freight hub in 2020 and showcased the region’s resilience and continued importance in the global supply chain as the COVID-19 pandemic raged on.

“From seeing infrastructure investment continue for nationally significant projects, to maintaining our standing in key rankings of our freight competitiveness, 2020 proved to be another banner year for the St. Louis region’s freight district, despite the unprecedented challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Mary Lamie.

“We’re proud of the way our region performed and welcome the opportunity to summarize some of the highlights to reinforce that there is still much to be positive about heading into 2021.” Lamie is the executive vice president of multi-modal enterprises for Bi-State Development, which oversees the St. Louis Regional Freightway as one of its enterprises.

Latest rankings, milestones underscore strength, adaptability of region’s freight network The St. Louis region’s inland waterway system once again ranked among the top three inland ports for total tonnage, with the latest data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirming the St. Louis regional ports are in the third position, handling more than 31.2 million tons of commodities in 2019. The St. Louis region also continues to rank as the most efficient inland port district in the nation in terms of tons moved per river mile. During 2019, the St. Louis region’s barge industry handled more than 436,000 tons per mile along the 70 miles that make up the port system. The system also has the second highest concentration of port facilities per mile of all inland ports, contributing to growing awareness of a 15-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that flows through southwestern Illinois and eastern Missouri at St. Louis known as the Ag Coast of America.

Growth at the region’s various ports is significantly influenced by the collaboration between them and other Midwest ports as they work together to get more barge loads on the Mississippi River and keep freight rates competitive. After welcoming the launch of container-on-barge services in the St. Louis region in 2020, that collaboration is also paving the way for the debut of innovative container-on-vessel (COV) service on the Mississippi River and adjacent inland rivers.

The COV service is part of a plan calling for patented new waterway vessels that will move large volumes of goods and commodi-

ties along the inland waterways, serving key consolidation ports in St. Louis, Memphis, Tenn., and several other feeder ports. The new service will effectively create an allwater north-south trade lane connecting the Midwest to the lower Mississippi River and on to worldwide destinations. Based on milestones reached in the latter part of 2020, service on the new route could be available to shippers by the first quarter of 2023.

Flying pigs contributed to important milestones reached at the airports in the St. Louis region during 2020. St. Louis Lambert International Airport celebrated its first-ever live animal export in November, shipping more than 200 breeding pigs from Henderson, Tenn. to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The shipment to Brazil demonstrates an aggressive new strategy for overseas exports at St. Louis Lambert International Airport and was the first of several planned shipments.

While not freight related, also noteworthy was MidAmerica St. Louis Airport posting the best passenger recovery in the United States even as the pandemic continued to impact air travel nationwide. MidAmerica saw the smallest decline in summer passengers of any airport in the country, with the Transportation Security Administration screening 40,590 departing passengers from June 1 to Aug. 31.

Infrastructure investment continued, driven in part by collaboration among state departments of transportation The St. Louis Regional Freightway’s 2021 Priority Projects List, which was released in May 2020, includes 21 projects representing a total investment of $2.2 billion. With more than half that amount covering projects already under construction or set to get underway by year’s end, it shows tremendous progress is being made to strengthen critical roads, bridges, rail infrastructure and port and airport facilities with the projects representing key infrastructure needs of the manufacturing and logistics industries in the region. Specific investments include: • Progress continues on the $222 million project to replace the 129-year old Merchants Bridge, a vital rail artery across the Mississippi River and one of the nation’s primary east-west rail corridors serving the nation’s third largest rail hub. When completed in 2022, the new double track bridge will help move freight faster, cost-effectively and more reliably, providing an alternative to more congested rail regions like Chicago. Largely funded by the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA), the project also received $21.5 million this year from the Federal Railroad Administration in a Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant.

• Unprecedented collaboration between the Missouri and Illinois Departments of Transportation (DOTs) facilitated the generation of $600 million for work to enhance portions of Interstate 270 in eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois over three years, despite both DOTs experiencing drastic funding level reductions. MoDOT and IDOT worked collaboratively on construction and design during 2020 to enhance I-270, which supports companies such as AB-InBev, Boeing, World Wide Technology, Procter & Gamble, Amazon and others which have facilities along the critical bi-state corridor. In all, hundreds of millions of dollars are supporting projects along the combined I-270/ Interstate 70 Corridor — one of the nation’s primary east-west manufacturing and logistics corridors.

• Among the new projects added to the Priority Project List in 2021 are improvements along Interstate 55 in Jefferson County, Mo., to support heavy truck movement and existing and future port operations, while various improvement projects on I-70 from Wentzville to Stan Musial Veteran’s Memorial Bridge were elevated to top priorities. Missouri Governor Mike Parson has

included money in his Cost Share Program to support $3.5 million in improvements to Route A, leading to the General Motors truck plant in Wentzville, where GM is investing $1.5 billion to make what it calls the “next generation” of mid-sized pickup trucks.

• The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in September awarded almost $7.1 million to St. Louis Lambert International Airport to fund the reconstruction of one of the airport’s taxiways. The airport also will not be required to put up the usual matching funds to cover the project’s entire cost as CARES Act funds will cover the balance. A key phase of the planned terminal expansion at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport got underway this fall thanks to nearly $6.5 million in FAA funding. The project includes critical infrastructure and safety improvements to enhance overall operations at the airport, which was seeing significant passenger growth year-over-year prior to the COVID19 pandemic and continues to operate as a joint-use airport with Scott Air Force Base.

• Also, in September, the U.S. DOT awarded $20.8 million in the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) discretionary grants to three ports

America’s Central Port in Granite City, Ill., will receive 2,050 linear feet of new railroad track, a new terminal access roadway, a new belt system and barge loading system replacement. The St. Louis Port Authority will receive 7,300 linear feet of new railroad track, barge loading equipment modernization, conveyor replacement, loading shed updates and flood mitigation work, and the project at Southwest Regional Port District in Illinois includes loading shed and electric system updates, hoist system and barge loading upgrades, and additional flood mitigation work.

Growth in the industrial sector remained strong While infrastructure investments are being made across the two-state region, several of the projects reinforce the strength of the I-70 Corridor linking Missouri and Illinois as a major east-west logistics corridor. The latest St. Louis Regional Real Estate Market Indicators & Workforce Statistics report reveals 94 percent of all bulk industrial

construction in the St. Louis region since 2016 has been focused along this corridor. The demand for distribution space has only been growing, and with recent record setting construction adding to the thriving modern bulk inventory, the St. Louis region is ready to meet that demand today, and in the post COVID-19 environment.

Keeping freight moving through the pandemic As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to impact the movement of goods into, out of and throughout the United States, the consistent response across the freight network in the bi-state St. Louis region helped to ensure it continues to deliver in these unprecedented times and solidified the region’s position as a leader in the nation’s freight network. At America’s Central Port in Illinois, for example, despite having to implement a whole range of measures to keep everyone safe, operators at the port on the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, continued to handle a tremendous volume of corn and soybeans, and the by-products, destined to ultimately feed the U.S. and the world. According to Executive Director Dennis Wilmsmeyer, it remained “business as usual” with a tremendous amount of freight still moving to and through the St. Louis area. He noted the operators there are just as essential to keeping

the supply of food on the shelves as the truck driver who makes those daily deliveries.

Trucking and rail companies also played a key role in keeping essential goods moving, serving as first responders without being in the medical field. Capacity issues on the trucking side were avoided due to the flexibility and adaptability of the industry, with trucks that typically would have moved auto parts, for example, freed up to move more essential items such as groceries and medical products. As the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread, TRRA noted a particularly noticeable drop in intermodal traffic, presumptively due to falling imports from China, while also seeing a drop in traffic volumes from auto plant closings. However, medical supplies, food, chemicals, cleaning products and anything else being used to battle the pandemic continued to be moved through the St. Louis region headed to all parts of the nation via the region’s rail network.

Sentimental video tribute closes Trebek’s final “Jeopardy!”

By ANDREW DALTON AP Entertainment Writer More than two months after Alex Trebek’s death, fans of “Jeopardy!” finally got the chance to say goodbye.

A video tribute to the host closed Friday’s episode of the quiz show, the final one that Trebek taped before pancreatic cancer claimed his life on Nov. 8.

The 90-second montage, set to Hugh Jackman singing the Peter Allen song “Once Before I Go,” is a lighthearted and laughter-filled remembrance showing Trebek’s changing look through his 36 years as host, with moustache and without, with black hair and with grey, with suits from several decades.

It celebrated the wackier moments of the usually strait-laced Trebek, showing him verbally sparring with contestants and arm-wrestling with one.

“You really make me feel inadequate,” he tells a child contestant. “Sorry about that,” she sassily answers.

Trebek is shown walking on the set pants-less in one clip, dressed as the Statue of Liberty in another, and wearing the costume of a Trojan solider in another.

A clip of the host declaring “I don’t dance” is shown amid scenes of him dancing through the years.

The tribute is still plenty sad and sentimental, though, as Jackman sings “it’s so hard to say good-byes, when there’s so much that’s left unspoken in your eyes,” and “once before I go, I would like to let you know, that I would do it all again.”

And in its final moments it shows Trebek through signing off through the decades, repeatedly saying, “So long, everybody.”

Trebek died Nov. 8 at age 80 but had pre-taped several weeks of shows that have continued to air. He kept working for nearly two years after his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, remaining in place at the podium where he had become an institution since starting in 1984.

The show will continue next week with a series of interim hosts, starting with veteran “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings.

The week’s final Trebek episodes began Monday with the host urging viewers to give to others who were suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder

society, and if we all pitch in just a little bit, we’re going to get there,” Trebek said.

His final shows were originally scheduled to air Christmas week, but they were put off until this week to give the send-off more exposure.

The episode includes holiday elements, like the category, “Christmas Movies.”

In one of the last of the more than 500,000 clues Trebek delivered to contestants in his more than 8,200 episodes, he says: “Basically, this heartwarming Frank Capra classic is about a disgraced financier having an incredibly rough Christmas Eve.” The correct response: “What is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ ?”

Trebek apparently wasn’t certain that Friday’s episode would be his last when it was recorded.

The show’s executive producer, Mike Richards, told NBC’s “Today” show on Monday that Trebek was “an absolute warrior” in his last taping sessions, despite being in “enormous pain.”

At the end of the episode, before the video tribute, Trebek says, “see you again next week.”
