Benzie County Places to check out this fall

Crystal Mountain Resort is always a great spot to enjoy fall golfing and hiking opportunities. The Legacy Art Park located on Crystal Mountain grounds becomes even more beautiful in the fall to view the artwork.

M-22 rides for the fall color tour throughout the rolling hills of Benzie County. A ride in just about any direction in Benzie County during October will produce locations for outstanding viewing of Mother Nature at its best.

The Point Betsie Lighthouse located at 3701 Point Betsie Road was the site of a lighthouse from 1854 to the present. See a historic lighthouse up close, visit the living quarters that were provided for a light keeper and his family.

The lighthouse located on the breakwater off the entrance to the Frankfort Harbor. This historic classic lighthouse has lit up the entrance to the harbor for decades.

St. Ambrose Cellars located at 841 S. Pioneer in Beulah shows visitors how wine, mead and other such spirits are made.

Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing, horse drawn sleigh rides and ice skating all at Crystal Mountain Resort.

Upper Herring Lake Nature Preserve is on a 180 parcel of land that includes one mile of hiking trails.

Welcome to

Manistee County Places to check out this fall

•

Ramsdell Theater located at the corner of Maple and First streets in Manistee. This historic theatre shows all the majestic features of an early 1900s structure and was constructed by philanthropist T.J. Ramsdell.

•

City of Manistee Fire Hall located at 281 First St., this structure is the oldest continually operating fire station in the country. The building dates back to the late 1800s when engines were pulled by horses.

•

North Country Trail, miles of trails through the Manistee National Forest and some breathtaking views of the Big Manistee River that are enhanced even more with the fall color tour.

•

Dublin General Store located at 18372 Hoxeyville Road in Wellston this unique store offers jerky of all kinds, sausage, fudge and other unique products.

•

MacBeth and Co. Is one of the many unique shops to see on a tour of M-22. It is located at 8011 First St. in Onekama and contains a wide variety of items.

•

Historic tour of Manistee homes and buildings; see some of Manistee’s historic Victorian homes and buildings at your own pace. Information is available at the Manistee County Historical Museum at 425 River St. for this self-guided tour.

•

Little Manistee Weir, each fall the Department of Natural Resources harvest salmon eggs from this location alongside the Little Manistee River in Stronach that are then planted in various areas in the spring to keep the fish population strong.

•

M-22 color tour, a favorite of many and it all begins in Manistee County. This ride passes through many interesting villages and communities in Manistee, Benzie and Leelanau counties while hugging the Lake Michigan shoreline.

•

Kaleva Bottle House and Depot is two historic parts of the past in the Village of Kaleva. The Bottle House has siding made out of bottles • and hosts the village museum. The depot was restored and was used for many years as a stop for the local railroad.

S.S. City of Milwaukee, this vessel ceased sailing as car ferry in 1981 and was purchased by the Society for the Preservation of the S.S. City of Milwaukee in 1988. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and open for tours. During the Halloween season the Milwaukee puts on a Ghost ship that is second to none.

•

Downtown Manistee, known at the Victorian Port City, the buildings that line River Street offer up architecture from the Victorian era and include quaint shops and restaurants where people can dine.

•

Little River Casino and Resort is an entity of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians that offers gaming, first class entertainment and dining from its location at the corner of U.S. 31 and M-22.

Manistee’s North Pierhead Lighthouse located at Fifth Avenue Beach, the historic light rests on a pier that features a historic catwalk leading out to it.

Things to do this winter •

Ice fishing on any of many inlands lakes throughout Manistee County.

Snowmobiling on 64 miles of trails groomed throughout Manistee County and can be picked up in Kaleva.

•

Cross country skiing available on any of the hiking trails listed above.

•

Fat tire biking on many trails throughout the county, check websites to find the ones that allow it.

Snowshoeing in the Manistee National Forest and other areas around the county.

Ice skating under the lights at the City of Manistee’s Sands Park located at the corner of Maple and Eighth streets.

Sparkle in the Park located in Hopkins Park on the shores of Bear Lake in the village. This annual exhibit contains

hundreds of Christmas decorations featuring thousands of lights. Viewing can be done from your vehicle driving through the park.

White Pine Village located south of Ludington on 1687 S. Lakeshore Road is an outdoor museum featuring 30 19th-century style buildings depicting what life was like in the Mason County area at that time. Volunteers display how everything from a school house from that period to a blacksmith shop and much more worked. Open through Oct. 23

•

Ludington Pump Storage Plant was a state-of-the-art power plant when constructed between 1969 and 1973. The plant pumps water from Lake Michigan up to a reservoir during the night and then back out during peak electricity hours during the day to produce 1,875 megawatts of electricity to supply 1.4 million customers.

•

Amber Elk Ranch offers the opportunity to see elk up close through wagon rides and a petting zoo. Located at 2688 W. Conrad Road in Ludington.

•

Ludington Breakwater pier and lighthouse. This historic lighthouse is periodically open to tours and can be found on the beach just west of downtown Ludington. The first lighthouse appeared at that location in 1871 and the current one was put in place in1924.

•

Big Sable Point Lighthouse is located in the Ludington State Park. This lighthouse and keeper’s residence are open to the public giving visitors the opportunity see what life was like as a lighthouse keeper in the late 1800s. Open through Oct. 24.

•

The S.S. Badger car ferry sails to Manitowoc, Wisconsin daily from the Port of Ludington. This 410-foot ship can carry up to 620 passengers and 180 vehicles. Cruises into October and are at a slower pace than the summer ones.

•

The Orchard Market at 400 N. U.S. 31 is a fall place to stop to find fresh vegetables and fruits that have been grown locally in the area farms over the summer. They also have a corn maze for the kids in the fall and a pumpkin patch where you can hand pick their favorite pumpkin for the Halloween season.
