T.J. Hansen

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Freeland High School

Hansen topped a field of 109 runners to win the John Bruder Classic in Shepherd on Sept. 4 with a time of 14:49.3, beating the next-closest finisher by nearly a full minute and posting the top time in the state.

Emilia Garces

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Garces topped a field of 115 runners to win the Northwood Invitational in Midland on Sept. 7 with a personal-record time of 17:57.2, which is the top time in the state among freshmen and the second-best time in all of Division 1.

Austin King

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

King won his No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against Mount Pleasant on Sept. 10, giving him a state-record 53 victories by the score of 6-0, 6-0 in his career. He then won three matches on Sept. 11 and three more on Sept. 14, extending his winning streak to 58 straight victories, which ranks third in state history.

Clara Kaczor

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Freeland High School

Kaczor ran a time of 18:46.1 to win the Division 3 girls’ race at the Duane Ruffin Festival of Races in Holly on Sept. 14. Her winning time topped a field of 90 runners, as she won the individual title in Holly for the second straight year.

Landon Wisneski

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Midland High School

Wisneski scored twice in a Sept. 16 win over Davison, then had 14 saves as a goalkeeper in a Sept. 18 loss to rival Dow High.

Amelia Malarz

MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Malarz earned Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Tri-Cities Championship on Sept. 21, helping the Chargers win the team title, setting a meet record in the 100 breaststroke, helping the Chargers win both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, and finishing second in the 200 individual medley.

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Coleman High School

Stockero had five receptions for 74 yards, including two leaping touchdown catches; returned an interception for a touchdown; had another interception at the goal line to thwart a touchdown; and caught a 2-point conversion pass in a Sept. 28 win over St. Charles.

Victoria Garces

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Garces won the girls’ Elite Division title at the Shepherd Blue jay Invitational on Sept. 28, topping a field of 237 runners with a time of 17:26.07 a week after winning the Veterans Serving Veterans meet with a time of 17:16.91, which is the third-fastest time in the state, in her season debut.

School: Coleman High School

DeVrieze rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns, caught six passes for 58yards and a TD, and had 14 tackles in an Oct. 4 win over Carson City-Crystal.

Nicole Giardina

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Midland High School

Giardina had 16 kills and 17 digs on Oct. 2 as the Chemics rallied from a 2-0deficit to beat Grand Blanc 3-2, then had 22 kills a day later as Midland rallied from an early deficit to beat Mount Pleasant 3-1.

School: Dow High School

Alade scored three goals in a 4-0 district quarterfinal win over rival MidlandHigh on Oct. 10.

Sophia Lee

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Lee shot a 2-over-par 74 at an Oct. 9 regional tournament to finish second individually and qualify for the Division 2 state tournament.

Austin King

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Dow High School

King won a second straight No. 1 singles state championship on Oct. 19 and finished a second consecutive season without losing a match or dropping a set. He finishes his prep career on a 75-match win streak, is the state’s all-time leader in 6-0, 6-0 victories, and ranks in the top three in the state all-time in single-season wins, career wins, and consecutive wins.

School: Dow High School

Garces ran a school-record time of 16:59.51 to win an individual championship and lead the Chargers to a team championship at the Saginaw Valley League meet on Oct. 16. She became the first Dow girl ever to eclipse the 17-minute mark on a 5K course, and she set a new school record for the third time.

School: Midland High School

Buschlen had a game-high nine tackles on defense and, as a punter, pinnedrival Dow High back on its own 1-yard-line twice in a 17-6 win over the Chargerson Oct. 25.

MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024

School: Freeland High School

Kaczor ran a school-record time of 18:07.96 to win a Division 2 regionalchampionship and lead the Falcons to a team title and a state final berth on Oct.26.

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Freeland High School

Hansen won a Division 2 individual state championship in record time for the second straight year on Nov. 2, running a time of 14:50.5 to break his own Michigan International Speedway record and become the first repeat champion in Division 2 since 2015.

Victoria Garces

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Garces won Dow’s first-ever individual Division 1 state championship on Nov. 2, running a school-record time of 16:37.1 to beat out the next-closest runner by nearly 24 seconds and topping her own previous school record by nearly 18 seconds.

Colton Pfenninger

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Gladwin High School

Pfenninger completed 8 of 13 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a TD in a 28-19 win over sixth-ranked Ogemaw Heights in a Nov. 8 district final.

Vera Roberson

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Roberson was named Swimmer of the Meet and earned First Team All-Saginaw League honors after leading the Chargers to victory in the league championship meet on Nov. 9, winning both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, and helping the Chargers win both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free style relay.

Nemeth scored four goals in the Chargers’ season-opening 9-1 win over Cheboygan on Nov. 23.

Amelia Malarz

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Dow High School

Malarz became the first Dow swim freshman to win an individual state championship, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.18 at the Division 2 finals on Nov. 23. She also earned All-State status in three other events, finishing fourth in the 200 individual medley, helping the 200 medley relay team finish fourth, and helping the 400 freestyle relay team finish eighth.

Corlew had 11 receptions for 111 yards in a Nov. 15 regional final against top-ranked Frankenmuth.

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2024

School: Calvary Baptist Academy

Savage had 19 kills and eight blocks in a Nov. 12 regional semifinal against Big Rapids Crossroads Academy, then had nine kills in a Nov. 14 regional final against second-ranked Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.

School: Freeland High School

Huckeby scored 32 points in a Nov. 26 season-opening win over Bay City Western, then scored 27 points in a Nov. 30 win over perennial power Warren De La Salle.

School: Midland High School

Miller finished with 334.15 points to place fifth at the Division 2 state final Nov. 22-23, becoming the first Chemic to earn All-State status at a girls’ swimming and diving final in at least 11 years.

School: Dow High School

VanSumeren had 21 points and 18 rebounds in a Dec. 3 win over Bay City Central.

School: Meridian High School

McLaughlin averaged 26.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games from Dec. 3-7, including a 33-point, 10-rebound performance in a Dec. 7 win over Alma.

Sophomore basketball player Roberts hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points in a Dec.13 game against Bullock Creek.

Seemann had 25 points and 11 rebounds in a Dec. 13 win over Mount Pleasant.

Diegel had a game-high 18 points and six assists in a Dec. 19 win over rival Midland High.

Aesa Jingles

Jingles became the first female hockey player to play for the Chargers, earning the win in net in a Dec. 7 game against West De Pere (Wis.) and in a Dec. 11 game against Grand Blanc, then making 22 saves in a Dec. 14 win over Birmingham Unified.

Anderson went 5-0 in dual matches on Dec. 21, as the Chemics won the Caro Invitational.

School: Freeland High School

Begick went 8 of 10 from 3-point range and scored 39 points in a Dec. 20 win over Essexville Garber.

Sampson went 5-0 at 106 pounds at the Battle of the Bridge tournament in Sault Ste. Marie on Dec. 21.

Arnold had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks in a Dec. 19 win over rival Dow High

Salogar stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced for a save percentage of .948, as the Chargers beat Marysville on Jan. 2 and Chelsea on Jan. 4 to extend their winning streak to seven straight.

School: Northwood University

Voelker scored a career-high 30 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone during a Jan. 2 win over Lake Erie. During the game, she shot 10 of 14 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and 7 of 8 from the foul line.

Waskevich had 32 saves in a Jan. 11 win over Grand Haven.

McLaughlin scored 30 points in a Jan. 9 win over Pinconning, making her Meridian’s all-time leading scorer, male or female, with 1,662 points.

Minuth set a Grand Blanc pool record in 1-meter diving with 226.35 points during a Jan. 23 win over the Bobcats.

Hubble scored 25 points against Clare on Jan. 14 and 25 points against Meridian on Jan. 16.

Delgado won a Saginaw Valley League championship at 144 pounds on Feb. 1 and remained undefeated on the season.

Stockton had 23 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and three assists in a Jan. 31 win over Bay City Western.

Soderberg won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.67 in a Feb. 6 meet against Davison, giving him a state-qualifying time in all 11 swimming events this season.

Begick had a game-high 18 points along with five rebounds and three steals in a 55-51 win over rival Frankenmuth on Feb. 7, the Falcons’ first regular-season win over the Eagles in five years.

Grenesko won a Division 1 individual regional championship at 190 pounds on Feb. 15 to advance to the state finals.

School: Midland High School

Daly set a school record with a six-game total of 1373 to finish third at a Feb. 22 singles regional and qualified for the Division 1 singles state final.

School: Meridian High School

McLaughlin scored 32 points in a Feb. 21 win over Gladwin, making her the first basketball player in school history to eclipse 2,000 career points.

Roe went 4-0 at the individual state finals and won a Division 4 state championship at 157 pounds on March 1.

DeBoer hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 21 points on Senior Night in a Feb. 27 win over East Lansing.

Soderberg earned All-State honors in all four of his events – the 200 IM, the 100 backstroke, the 200 free relay, and the 400 free relay – at the Division 2 state finals on March 15.

School: Meridian High School

McLaughlin had 25 points and 11 rebounds in a March 10 regional semifinal win over eighth-ranked Hart, then had 24 points in a March 12 regional final against Roscommon to lead the Mustangs to the first regional championship in program history.

School: Bay City Western

Sequin pitched four scoreless innings in relief and struck out six to get the win, while hitting a two-run homer in a March 21 victory over topranked Birmingham Brother Rice.

Parks scored six goals in a March 24 season-opening victory over Lapeer.

Mularz threw four scoreless, hitless innings and struck out nine in an April 4 season-opening win over Alpena.

School: Freeland High School

Kowalski had four hits, including a home run, and five runs batted in during an April 4 season-opening win over Alpena.

Brown had four hits and a walk and drove in two runs, as the Chargers upset seventhranked and defending state champion Flint Powers 9-4 on April 11.

School: Dow High School

Hughes batted .611 (11-for-18) with two homers, including a grand slam; two doubles; eight runs scored; and seven runs batted in, as the Chargers swept Flint Powers on April 11, then went 3-0 at the Freeland quad on April 12.

School: Midland High School

Faccio threw a no-hit shutout in an April 17 win over Grand Blanc, allowing only two walks and striking out 15.

MONTH OF APRIL 2025

School: Meridian High School

Linton threw 10 innings and allowed no earned runs on only three hits with 22 strikeouts in an April 16 sweep of Beaverton.

Zach Dzurka

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Dow High School

Dzurka won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.80 and won the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.83 at the Oiler Invitational in Mount Pleasant on April 25. His 14.80 in the 110 hurdles is a school record and ranks 10th in the state, while his time of 38.87 in the 300 hurdles on April 17 is also a school record and ranks sixth in the state.

Victoria Garces

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Dow High School

Garces ran a school-record time of 4:48.48 to finish fifth in the 1600-meter run in a field of elite runners at the Barnyard Invitational in Romeo on April 25. That time was only a little over two seconds off the winning time, and it qualifies Garces for the Division 1 state finals.

L.J. Gallihugh

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Midland High School

Gallihugh finished first in both the 100-meter dash (10.95) and the 200 dash (22.18) while helping the Chemics win the 16-team Bay City Western Warrior Invitational on May 2. Three days earlier, in a dual meet against Mount Pleasant, he ran a personal-record 22.09 in the 200 and a PR of 10.87 in the 100.

School: Dow High School

Galus went 6-for-8 with two doubles, seven RBIs, and six runs scored in an April 28 doubleheader against Lapeer.

School: Dow High School

Szajenko had a game-winning RBI single in game one, then went 4-for-6 with five RBIs and was the winning pitcher in game two in a May 8 sweep of Mount Pleasant. Then, in a May 10 sweep of Freeland, Szajenko had a double and two walks and scored three runs, including the walkoff winner, in game two.

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Midland High School

Cassiday went 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBIs, and four runs scored in a May 7 win over Freeland, then went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and scored twice in a doubleheader sweep of Flint Powers on May 8. Then, in a May 10 sweep of Livonia Franklin, Cassiday went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and scored twice in game two.

Max Stoecker

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Midland High School

Stoecker won regional championships in both the shot put (60-feet, 8-inches) and the discus (175-feet, 7-inches) on May 16..

Sydney Roberts

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Dow High School

Roberts won a regional championship in the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 56.07 on May 16, while also qualifying for state in the 200-meter dash with a personal-record time of 25.52 to finish third in the region.

Braxden Radcliffe

MONTH OF MAY 2025

School: Meridian High School

Eighth-grade track and field athlete

Radcliffe broke a 38-year-old Meridian Junior High record in the pole vault by clearing 11feet, 6-inches in regional competition, topping the previous record by eight inches.
