Just ask Don Kopp, who’s been living Life According to You here for the past four years. Don first heard about the community through friends who were residents and spoke highly of it.
“The pool was the biggest draw,” Don says. “I’ve used it three times a week since moving in—for exercise and especially for balance after breaking my back. It’s made a big difference in how I feel.”
Don was already on EverTrue Meridian Village’s waitlist when he had his accident. He was able to obtain
short-term rehabilitation at EverTrue Meridian Village and then transitioned smoothly into an Independent Living apartment. “I was in the right place at the right time,” he says. “It made all the difference.”
With the EverTrue short-term rehabilitation team, Don built a personalized aquatic therapy routine. The water allows him to stay strong and balanced without putting strain on his joints, making it a key part of his ongoing wellness.
But physical health is just one piece of the puzzle. Life at EverTrue Meridian Village has also brought Don purpose, connection and fun. A retired high school and college teacher, Don naturally brings people together. “I might’ve started our poker group,” he says with a grin. “I missed playing, mentioned it and before long, we had a regular group—guys and ladies—playing three nights a week.” He also helps set up BINGO games and keeps his mind sharp with crossword puzzles.
Don’s long career as an educator spanned 38 years in Granite City, IL high schools, followed by six years teaching at the college level. In retirement, he took on a new adventure as supervisor of the media area at America’s Center in St. Louis, working major events and meeting athletes and broadcasters from around the world. “It was a fun job,” he says. “I was lucky.”
That sense of engagement continues at EverTrue Meridian Village. Don serves on the food committee, giving residents a voice in dining decisions. “The staff really listens. I respect that.”
