A Place Called Hope, a rehabilitation and education center for birds of prey in Killingworth, has all manner of feathered friends available to mix and mingle with guests during one-hour meet-and-greets. For the traditionalists out there, describe what makes a great classic wedding invitation. What are the dos and don’ts? A classic wedding invitation honors the longstanding nuptial customs that have been cherished for generations. It presents grace and elegance. A classic wedding invitation would typically include a beautiful printing method such as calligraphy, letterpress or thermography, subtle colors, perhaps a monogram and wax seal. It can also include homemade paper or deckle-edged paper. A classic wedding invitation is timeless. It can be combined with some complementary pieces that may be more trendy. And, yes, for the speed demons among us, the 300-acre natural amphitheater surrounded by the Litchfield Hills also happens to host weddings. You can opt to hold your ceremony at the finish line (!), while tented receptions for up to well over 300 guests can be held at either Hospitality Village, which overlooks the front straightaway, Big Bend and turns one and two, or on the Esses Plateau, a flat grassy knoll that overlooks turns two, three and four (known as the “esses”). The New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks houses one of the world’s top collections of aviation artifacts, including more than 100 aircraft. Its goal is to present not just the story of aviation, but also tell the stories of the men and women who built, flew and made history with these fantastical machines. It is easily one of the state’s most colorful and wildly romantic places to host a wedding. After-hours rental of the museum includes use of three connected hangars. OLD MAN RIVER The MV Becky Thatcher is a grand ol’ Mississippi-style riverboat operated by the Essex Steam Train that is available from May through October for evening wedding charters that feature the Connecticut River as a backdrop. The 70-foot-long classic vessel was built in 1961 and can accommodate up to 150 for cocktail-style receptions and 82 for seated receptions; its three decks even include an open promenade deck with a view of the stars. Time, tide, traffic and weather determine exactly where Becky will travel, but her route generally covers the Connecticut River from the Goodspeed Bridge in East Haddam to the Baldwin Bridge in Old Saybrook. But, wait, the views don’t end there: because Miss Becky is operated by the Essex Steam Train, weddings begin and end aboard vintage train cars that transport guests from Essex Station to Deep River Landing and back again. 860-767-0103, essexsteamtrain.com
The Valley Railroad Co., which operates the Essex Steam Train, has been in existence in one form or another since 1868. History-making Essex Steam Train weddings center around 1892 Essex Station, where the station’s industrialchic E.E. Dickinson Ballroom can seat 225 guests for dinner and dancing. If, however, you’re willing to forgo the dancing, extraordinary moveable feaststyle receptions for up to 120 guests can take place aboard the Essex Clipper dinner train as it chug, chug, chugs its way through the Connecticut River Valley. The 69 painted ponies on New Haven’s Lighthouse Point Park Carousel were created in 1916 chiefly by master carvers Charles I.D. Looff and Charles Carmel. They’re examples of the “Coney Island” style of carousels, marked by gold and silver leaf, black pinstriping and plenty of scrollwork. The turn-of-the-century beachfront pavilion in which these magical creatures live out their happily ever after is surrounded on four sides by vast expanses of windows and are available for rental between May and October for up to 275 seated guests. Redline Restorations, a serendipitous find on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, has got the “wow” factor going on — and then some. Indeed, the folks here like describe their 120,000-square-foot “world-class” automotiverestoration facility as a “haven for the legendary cars of yesterday and hero cars of today” — and the kicker is that some 80 to 100 of these babies are on eye-popping display for you (and your wedding guests) to drool over. As the folks at Mystic Seaport Museum like to tell it, long before the museum’s ships, shops and shipyard were established on the banks of the Mystic River, the banks of that historic waterway were filled with, well, ships, shops and shipyards. In fact, between 1784 and 1919 — the “golden age” of American maritime enterprise — more than 600 vessels were constructed along the Mystic River. Seaport weddings, as you might expect, are indeed centered around the water. Ceremonies can be held between May and October at Lighthouse Point with views of downtown Mystic and its trademark drawbridge in the distance, cocktails served on a riverfront dock and a reception for up to 170 seated guests in an open-air Boat Shed on the banks of the river. LAKE LIFE Once upon a time there were more than 1,000 “trolley” parks in the U.S. that were owned and operated by electrified rail lines. Middlebury’s Quassy Amusement and Waterpark, once the most popular summer stop on the Connecticut Trolley Co. line, is one of only 11 that remain. That, however, doesn’t mean that the 20-acre lakeside park currently celebrating its 115th anniversary hasn’t kept up with the times. This season, in fact, Quassy unveiled the Super Himalaya, a high-speed circular thrill ride that speeds up to 12 revolutions per minute. Last season, it was Rocket Rapids Water Coaster, the first ride of its kind in Connecticut, that made its debut. As for weddings, Quassy’s open-air pavilions can seat from 50 up to a whopping 1,200. eather Grayauskie and Chris Caldwell believed in magic long before they met. Indeed, when they connected online in 2019, they immediately discovered that they were each what Heather calls a “fantasy nerd.” The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter series, Dr. Who, anything by Brandon Sanderson, even Buffy the Vampire Slayer … they each “loved to get lost in those worlds.” Chris and Heather began talking about what their wedding would look like even before they got engaged in 2021, and came to the conclusion that what they wanted most of all was to celebrate their love in a way that was truly “Chris and Heather,” and would bring guests on a “fantastic and whimsical journey” along with them. Love, hope, family, friendship and loyalty are what matters most in a marriage, they decided, and, since these exact themes happen to be woven throughout the world of Harry Potter, a wizarding wedding was decided upon. “We like to play and we like to have fun, and we wanted that for our guests as well,” explains Heather. At the same time, “it was really important to us that the day be as elegant as it was whimsical. We didn’t want it to feel like you were at a kid’s birthday party, but that you were actually there. We wanted an immersive experience.” So how does one get to Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft? By way of the Essex Steam Train, of course. Heather and Chris’s guests, some clad in their finest Harry Potter attire, as were the bride- and groom-to-be, took the train from Essex Station to Hogwarts (aka The Lace Factory in Deep River), where everyone, whether muggle, wizard, witch or squib, was invited to celebrate.

Upon entrance, guests were directed to a wall of wands to pick up their own personal magical accoutrement that had been painstakingly carved by the bride-to-be, her father and the future groom. Along the way to Hogwarts’ Great Hall, vignettes illustrated in vivid detail the world of everyone’s favorite boy wizard for unfamiliar guests. There was Veritaserum, for example, a truth potion so powerful you’re likely to spill your innermost secrets after only three drops, and a Niffler, a magical beast known to covet shiny things. Students (read: guests) were asked to bring their wands to a mystical “sorting hat,” felted by Heather, which, thanks to the magical engineering of Chris’s son, Qin, spoke out personalized messages that told them at which of the four houses (read: tables) they were assigned to sit. You might, for example, belong in Gryffindor, “where dwell the brave at heart. Their daring, nerve and chivalry set Gryffindors apart.” Each house’s immense banquet table had their house banner (Heather, again) flying high at each end, classic color-coordinated linens and, still more mystical potions and trinkets set atop hardcover Harry Potter editions that served as centerpieces (which guests were invited to bring home). Kinsmen Brewing Co. in Milldale helped create a signature cocktail to end all cocktails: Butterbeer, but of course. There were winged golden snitches and boxes laden with chocolate frogs. Heather even surprised Chris by arranging to have A Place Called Hope, a rehabilitation center for birds of prey in Killingworth, bring owls to the reception for some mixing and mingling. (Owls, Chris’s favorite creatures, are often enlisted to aid communication between wizards.) As Heather and Chris told their guests, “Magic is very real. We feel it every day, and we hope that at some point today you will feel it, too. If, even for a second, you forget where you are and get swept away in the moment, then we have done what we set out to do.”

hen Alysha Bullock and Richard Harrison went on their first date, the five hours they spent getting to know each other over sushi wasn’t nearly enough, so they decided to take a drive. Eventually they ended up at Rickyl’s in Brookfield, the mom-and-pop breakfast/ lunch spot that Rick’s parents had owned for more than 30 years. The restaurant was already closed for the night, but that didn’t stop Rick from offering to make Aly something, and they settled on milkshakes. “It was honestly like something out of a movie from the ’50s,” remembers Aly. “He was just so sweet and so chivalrous — he even gave me his jacket.” Later that night, Rick texted his mom and asked that she set aside the glasses they’d used for their milkshakes when she arrived in the morning. He wanted to save them, he told her, because, “I just met my future wife and I want those glasses for the rest of my life.” Two years later, after Aly had completed her doctorate in dentistry, Rick did indeed ask her to be his wife — and he did so over milkshakes at Rickyl’s that were served in those glasses he’d saved. When you know, you know. As for the Sept. 30, 2022, wedding Aly and Rick planned, “I wanted to elope, and Rick wanted a big wedding,” explains Aly. “Our compromise was to do something fun and different that we could both enjoy and not stress about.” Bad Sons Beer Co. in Derby fit the low-key vibe they were seeking. “We didn’t want anything stuffy,” says Aly. “We wanted it to be relaxed and casual. We told people, ‘Wear whatever you want; it doesn’t matter as long as you have fun.’” Instead of flower girls they had “beer boys” of a certain age who showered guests with flower petals as they handed out beers

and hard cider. Food trucks served up yummy appetizers and dinner (hello, nacho bar!) and there was apizza from Roseland later in the night, a requirement when you grow up in the Valley, as Aly did. In lieu of cake, Aly and Rick cut a funky giant doughnut laden with Fruity Pebbles from Donut Crazy in Shelton. At their first look, Aly and Rick pinned tiny fishing flies on one another in order to honor Aly’s fly-fishing grandfather, who had passed away shortly before their big day. Both Aly and Rick’s beautiful grandmothers served as ring bearers, and Rick was further thrilled when his 96-year-old grandmother, who’d been a tap dancer in her youth, found the strength to rise from her wheelchair and share a dance with the new groom. “We all had a ball,” sums up Aly. “It was everything we could have hoped for.” Rick even managed to surprise his unsuspecting bride by busting out the original milkshake glasses he fell in love with her over in order to share a toast to their marriage (this time with hard cider) after they said their vows. They will soon have even more to raise a glass to: Rick and Aly are expecting a baby girl this October.
