AS I LACED up a pair of retro quad skates under the glow of disco lights, a twinge of terror coursed through my body. It had been nearly three decades since I’d gone roller skating, and now, inching my way toward the rink at Playland Skate Center, I realized it would be a much longer fall when I inevitably lost my balance. But pride overruled my fear: After a shaky start, careening around and sometimes into fellow skaters, I started to find a rhythm. By the time Daft Punk’s “One More Time” blared overhead, the song became a directive for me—another lap, I thought, and then I’ll stop. OK, one more. Soaking in the music, I felt my feet glide across the floor as I kept rolling for another 30 minutes. By the time I finally left the rink, I was smitten.
While it was not a date that led me to Playland that October afternoon—actually, I had attended a 6-year-old’s birthday party—the activity sparked something in me. As I looked around, watching couples laugh, link arms, and even tumble, I noticed that the childlike sport was a perfect way to bond and make memories together. The experience would help inspire the cover photo for this romance-themed issue, my first as editor-in-chief at Austin Monthly. When selecting models, we asked a local couple who had found love on national television—Zach Shallcross and Kaity Biggar of The Bachelor—to take a spin in quad skates for our playful shoot.
Whether you’re in a new relationship or have been married for decades, it’s easy to fall into a date night rut. So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we decided to uncover fresh and classic ways to reignite love in Central Texas. With activities like sushi-making classes with your sweetheart, riding an alpine coaster together in New Braunfels, singing a duet at Ego’s on South Congress, or re-enacting the pottery scene in Ghost, writer Cynthia Houchin and I present dozens of ideas to spice up your routine in “50 Great Dates” (page 38). In addition to Shallcross and Biggar, we photographed two other real-life local couples having fun in the capital city: Gustavo Padron and James Hearne making pottery at Broad Studios Club House, and Lindsey Sokol and Andrew DiLallo cooking up some pies at DeSano Pizzeria Napoletana. For those who are looking to meet someone special this year, Austin Monthly is hosting its annual “Singles in the City” event on Feb. 8 at Superstition. Every winter, we highlight the most eligible free agents in Austin and throw a party where hundreds of fellow singles can come out and meet them. The flirty bash is a great way to mix and mingle in the new year, plus help raise money for Austin Pets Alive! Here’s to 2024—and to trying something new.

By fostering affordable workspaces and a cohesive community, Good Dad Studios is revolutionizing Austin’s visual art landscape.
BY MADELINE HOLLERN
IN A CITY where music, nightlife, and food are in the spotlight, the fine arts scene can sometimes feel like an afterthought. But one local endeavor wants to change that. As many Central Texas artists have experienced both a dearth of available studio space and the rising cost of living, two art industry vets combined forces with a local architecture firm to create Good Dad Studios. Conceived with affordability in mind, the new studio complex is housed in a 43,000-square-foot Southeast Austin building owned by Calvin Chen, a partner at Bercy Chen Studio. The avid arts supporter worked with Jacqueline Overby (co-founder of San Marcos’ MotherShip Studios) and GD Wright (manager of Austin’s Bolm Studios) to convert the old office space into dozens of artist workplaces. Because Chen owns the building, he’s able to keep rent prices lower for artists by cutting out many of the expenses that normally come with running a physical space.
“We have this issue in Austin where there’s such a shortage of studios that if I have one space come available over at Bolm, I get hit up by 15 people in four hours from posting about it,” Wright says. With room for more than 85 rental spaces at Good Dad
Studios, the boosted inventory is a game changer for one of the largest hurdles facing aspiring artists.
Adorned with vibrant work from muralists like Zuzu Perkal and BLVD on the exterior, the complex is filled with unique options for creatives, from a retrofitted 1960s bank vault that will be home to a one-year residency sponsored by the Carver Museum ATX Foundation to a planned giant shipping container for wood and metal workers. Notable tenants include Art for the People Gallery and local nonprofit the Girls Empowerment Network. The site also has plenty of flex space for panel discussions, gallery shows, and community initiatives.
In addition to lowering rental costs, the collective has programs where artists who find themselves in financial hardship can work-trade part of their rent for art education classes or on-site janitorial and landscaping duties. Ultimately, the goal is to take care of local creatives so they can thrive: “I was surprised when I moved here that most artists in this town have a day job, and then when they got off work, they [create] art,” Wright says. “I want to see everybody quit their job. To do that, you have to have this kind of economy.” gooddadstudios.com
From
post-punk darlings
to an R&B-inspired chanteuse, here are four local bands to watch in 2024.
BY LEE ACKERLEY
Rarely has a band blindsided Austin with such an incendiary blend of stage presence, intoxicating anthems, and star power. Frontman Jonathan Horstmann exudes the charisma of icons from the bygone era of ’80s dance rock, engaging his audiences with a balance of vulnerability and dominance. The galvanizing trio has breathed new life into the post-punk genre with their catchy, new wave–inspired gothtronica and has graduated to playing national festivals like Cruel World, Darker Waves, and Freakout Fest. Prepare for a deluge of singles dropping in the first half of the year, leading up to the release of their new album, The Tower, out this summer.
With her honeyed voice and versatile songwriting, musical tour de force Kelsey Wilson has fronted successful bands like Glorietta and Wild Child. Her newest project blends R&B, funk, and soul into upbeat hits built on deep grooves. In 2023, the group was dubbed Band of the Year at the Austin Music Awards, and a follow-up to their debut is slated for release this year. Looking for proof they’ve really arrived? Consider their main stage performance at the renowned Newport Folk Festival this past July.
If you think the local music scene is synonymous with country and honky tonk, then you might have just stepped off a flight from LAX. Austin has long been a haven for rock, R&B, and avant-garde musical styles, a vibrant tapestry of genres that find fertile ground amongst the city’s discerning and eclectic fans. Fortune favors the bold, creative, and persistent, and our musical landscape is brimming with under-the-radar artists poised for national breakthrough—including these bands that are about to hit the big time.
Featuring a mix of meandering surf rock, psychedelic pop melodies, and nightmarish outbursts, this enigmatic trio defies categorization. Their debut album, When Horses Would Run, garnered national acclaim last year for its off-kilter and inventive sound, and now the band is set to spread their lysergic brand of Americana evangelism across the country. Up next: Being Dead will tour the West Coast with Husbands starting in February and are set to release their much-anticipated next album in September.
Born out of the pandemic’s isolation, this punishing all-female punk quartet has taken the music scene by storm. Echoing the raw, unbridled spirit of genre pioneers like The Dicks, Big Boys, and A Giant Dog, Die Spitz has injected a shot of adrenaline into Austin’s scene with their Nirvana-infused grunge melodies, Sabbath-inspired riffs, and untamed live spectacles. Fueling their meteoric rise, their uncaged energy secured opening slots for icons like OFF! and Amyl and the Sniffers. Now, they’re set to traverse Texas supporting like-minded legends The Spits in January, paving the way for their new album and U.S. tour as headliners this year.

Amid a budget boost and a new director of oversight, can an understaffed police force mend a tense relationship with the populace it’s sworn to protect and serve?
BY BRYAN C. PARKER
ON SEPT. 13, Murphy McCullough endured a harrowing phone call in which she heard her sister experience a head-on car collision on the other end of the line. McCullough rushed to the scene of the accident only to find that the Austin Police still hadn’t turned up, despite being alerted. In fact, the blue and red flashers of a police car didn’t arrive until about three hours later. “I grew up in this city. I respect law enforcement. Last night was unacceptable,” she wrote on social media the following day.
When news of the incident made headlines, voices of disapproval weren’t limited to the city’s progressive contingent—both boosters and reformists admit that the situation between Austinites and the organization sworn to protect and serve them has been fraught as of late.
Some Austinites have suggested that local police have “quiet quit” the job—a perspective evidenced by the fact that citizens were waiting almost three minutes just for someone to pick up the phone at the 911 call center this past summer. Even staunch supporters have noted the malaise but are quick to pin the blame on City Council for cutting department
funding in 2020. That move has made recruiting tougher for a job that many already deem thankless and dangerous. This past November, the risks of the profession became painfully clear during a hostage situation where 38-year-old Jorge Pastore became the first Austin officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty since 2012.
Last spring, local government approved APD salaries that included a raise in anticipation of the expiring contract between the two parties. That formal agreement, which has yet to be renewed, has been a key point of tension in an ongoing standoff. In February 2023, former City Manager Spencer Cronk announced that an agreement had been reached with the Austin Police Association (APA, the union that represents APD), but then had to walk that back after City Council contradicted the stance. Rejecting a proposed contract outright is rare, and the snub sent a shockwave through the police force and prompted a mass exodus that included Chief of Police Joseph Chacon, who retired abruptly in August.
Staffing remains a serious issue for a force facing hundreds of vacancies, but it’s worth noting that

the department budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year ranks as the largest in Austin history at $476.5 million, up more than $30 million from the previous year. (The city is also bound by 2021 state legislation spearheaded by Texas Republicans that requires police budgets to increase or remain static each year.)
Beyond mundane fiscal and personnel issues, Austin Police has been scrutinized for a number of tragic incidents in the last few years. In April 2020, Mike Ramos was shot and killed by officer Christopher Taylor, whose murder trial ended in November with no verdict due to a hung jury. Later that spring, 16-year-old Brad Ayala sustained a severe brain injury after being shot with “less lethal” crowd control ammunition by policeman Nicholas Gebhart. And Reice Samuel Brown died in a local hospital after being tased by an Austin officer on the side of the highway this past October. In total, police misconduct has cost the city of upwards of $73 million over the last decade, according to a 2023 report by Kroll Associates, a New York–based financial analysis firm. For comparison, the City of Dallas spent only about $10 million on settlements over a similar period of time.
All of this was likely on the minds of Austin voters this May when they overwhelmingly passed Prop A, which expands the reach of the Office of Police Oversight. Interim City Manager Jesús Garza found himself in his own controversy after he appointed Gail McCant as its new director without conducting a national search as promised. However, Garza brushed aside that pushback, citing Prop A as a reason that the city needed to move expeditiously to meet the desires of voters.
In response to the ballot measure, the APA walked away from negotiating a new contract and have said they won’t return as long as the city plans to implement all aspects of Prop A. But negating the will of voters doesn’t seem like a reasonable expectation. In an ideal world, oversight could be a pathway to ameliorating the fractured relationship, but APA stands opposed to independent oversight. For her part, McCant says, “At Austin’s Office of Police Oversight, everything we do is to promote an atmosphere of earned trust between Austinites and the Austin Police Department. When people have concerns or complaints about potential police misconduct, those concerns need to be heard, investigated, and resolved.”
As constituents move for more transparency involving law enforcement, the City Council passed a resolution at a Sept. 14 meeting to develop a publicly accessible data dashboard. “This has been a known need—to have information available for our community to access data on the types of arrests that our police department are doing,” says Councilmember Vanessa Fuentes, who co-sponsored the resolution along with José “Chito” Vela. That endeavor will first need a plan of action from the city manager, but it could be rolled out sometime next year.
Regardless of the arduous path forward and the complexity of the job, the police force’s primary obligation is to serve the public, and that includes a critical populace and a demanding city government. Change is never easy, but Austin’s clear-cut identity and overwhelming support for fresh approaches could be an opportunity to move policing into a new era. First, the two parties must get back to the negotiating table. APA’s stonewalling in response to a democratic election result seems a bit like leaving citizens waiting hours to respond to a call. What was the word Murphy McCullough used after her terrifying incident? Unacceptable.
A new music business certification program at Huston-Tillotson aims to bolster the industry around one of Austin’s primary economic generators.
BY BRYAN C. PARKER
Payne got a call from his close friend Ogden Payne (no relation), who had a pitch for an entirely new venture. Through his company, For the Students, Ogden had already devised the curriculum for a six-week music business certification program and was set to partner with Huston-Tillotson University (HT), but he needed an instructor and had someone specific in mind. A successful promoter and talent manager, Philip helped ScoreMore Shows rise to acclaim and had worked with artists such as Drake, Mac Miller, and Tory Lanez. But the prospect of being a teacher? That wasn’t on his radar.
artists will tell you that it lags far behind cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville. While music in the capital city generates nearly $2 billion in annual economic activity, the median income for those working in the industry was just $35,000$49,000 as of the 2015 music census. “With a lot of musicians that I spoke to, one thing that kept coming up was that they don’t make a lot of money, but this is a billion-dollar industry,” says Rohan Thompson, dean of HT’s School of Business and Technology.
Entrepreneur and instructor Philip Payne brings valuable real-world experience to HustonTillotson’s music business certification program.
Surprise aside, the idea of sharing the wealth of his knowledge and insight with the Austin community that helped launch his career allured him. Fast forward nine months to a chilly night in November, and Philip stood before a classroom of 25 students, giving them a rundown of the basics of A&R (artists and repertoire), the ins and outs of music publishing, and how to market to contemporary consumers.
Austin’s identity as a music city is rooted in our abundance of venues as well as two major festivals, but when it comes to industry infrastructure, many
Every year, a parade of talented artists and aspiring producers leave the capital city in search of better opportunities. HT’s program aims to change that. It will not only supply real-world know-how from a successful homegrown mind, but also allow students an inside track to internships at two music industry juggernauts right here in town: C3 Presents and SXSW, which are both official partners for the enterprise. Additionally, C3 provided scholarship funds for a select number of students, which was a massive help with the project’s initial launch. “We’ve got full-time staff that started as interns,” says SXSW director of music festival programming Brian Hobbs.
Among the students registered for the course is Chelsea Williams, a San Marcos High School grad and freshman business major at Huston-Tillotson. With a love for hip-hop artists like Future and Rod Wave, Williams saw the certification program as a perfect complement to her coursework. “When Philip started telling us his story, it just really opened my eyes,” she says. “You don’t have to play an instrument to be in the music industry.” Williams adds that she could see herself pursuing a career pathway in managing artists in the future.
The program, which is open to the public rather than just HT students, has appealed to seasoned vets like David Brendan Hall as well. A music journalist and photographer, Hall has worked in the field for decades but recently ventured into promotions and marketing. He saw the course as a way to sharpen his awareness of trends and help foster connections.
Given HT’s status as a historically Black university, the course also addresses the lack of diversity that Austin chronically faces: The city’s Black population has decreased from 10 percent to just over 7 percent over the last two decades. “When you talk about the declining numbers of African-Americans here in Austin, that number also is reflected in the music industry,” Thompson says. “We thought that this would be a really good way to bring more diversity to the music industry, because it’s needed.”

As Shark Tank celebrates 15 years on the air, we look back at the most memorable deals, duds, and guest appearances from Austinites.
BY MADELINE HOLLERN
Since debuting in 2009, ABC’s popular investment show has become a fixation for entrepreneurs looking to land the deal of their dreams. In honor of its big anniversary, here’s a timeline of noteworthy locals featured on the show, from a jewelry maven who’s now a recurring shark to brands just trying to avoid hearing the dreaded phrase: “For that reason, I’m out.”
John Paul DeJoria
After early life experiences that included being placed in the foster care system as a child and later living out of his car, this entrepreneur made brilliant investments with Paul Mitchell and Patrón. Because of his rags-to-riches background, the Austin billionaire brought fresh perspective to Shark Tank in season 5 as a guest judge.
Beardbrand
Hirsute founder Eric Bandholz found himself in a hairy situation with the sharks: Not a single one extended an offer, and Lori Greiner even went so far as to say that the products would only interest the Amish. But his company certainly benefited from the exposure of the national show, and now, Beardbrand boasts more than $7 million in sales annually.
The ask: $400,000 for a 15 percent stake
Final result: No deal
BeatBox Beverages
This booze brand had plenty of reasons to propose a toast following its successful pitch. After a bidding battle among several judges, the company locked in a $1 million investment from Mark Cuban—one of the largest deals in the show’s history. As of 2022, BeatBox had grown to more than 40,000 retail locations.
The ask: $200,000 for a 10 percent stake
Final result: $1 million for a 33 percent stake
At just 10 years old, Mikaila Ulmer dazzled the sharks as she presented her buzzworthy fresh-squeezed lemonade line alongside her dad, Theo. They ultimately inked a deal with Daymond John. By 2020, the company (now called Me & the Bees) had sold more than 1 million bottles.
The ask: $60,000 for a 10 percent stake
Final result: $60,000 for a 25 percent stake
Chi’Lantro
While pitching his KoreanMexican barbecue concept beloved for its kimchi fries, owner Jae Kim initially agreed to partner with Barbara Corcoran for $600,000 for a 20 percent stake, but he had a change of heart after the show and walked away from the deal. The company has since grown to have 12 locations across Texas.
The ask: $600,000 for a 15 percent stake
Final result: No deal
Everlywell
This at-home medical testing company aced its own exam when founder Julia Cheek got a deal from Lori Greiner. In just two years after appearing on the show, the brand went from $2.5 million in sales to $65 million, and the kits are now in retailers such as Target and CVS.
The ask: $1 million for a 5 percent stake
Final result: $1 million as a line of credit at 8 percent interest for a 5 percent stake
Kendra Scott
Despite being one of the wealthiest self-made women in America, the jewelry designer had plenty of nerves as she first appeared as a guest shark. “My stomach was flipping,” Scott admitted. But she quickly found her shine and became a recurring guest judge.
Proper Good
Donning colonial garb and wigs, British-born siblings Chris and Jennifer Jane impressed the sharks with their ready-to-eat meals—but judges questioned their high customer acquisition rate. Ultimately, Cuban decided to bite, and now the line is sold at Walmart and Thrive Market.
The ask: $400,000 for a 10 percent stake
Final result: $400,000 for a 20 percent stake
2023
Dating by Blaine
Blaine Anderson helps men navigate modern courtship by overhauling their dating apps and providing coaching. After a bit of negotiation with Cuban, she scored a match of her own with a deal on Shark Tank
The ask: $100,000 for a 2 percent stake
Final result: $100,000 for a 10 percent stake

Dr. Lisa M. Jukes
Lisa M. Jukes, M.D., board-certified gynecologist, and her all-female team understand that in today’s busy world, many women see only one health care provider regularly: a gynecologist. With that in mind, they approach each patient with a 360-degree perspective helping to ensure that patients are thinking about both their gynecological and overall health.
Modern Women’s Health welcomes patients of all ages and in all life stages offering a full range of services to address topics including menstrual cycle concerns, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, menopause issues, sexual dysfunction, infertility diagnosis, and more. Additional services include vaginal rejuvenation procedures, hormone therapy, and a variety of med-aesthetic treatments for face and body.
If you want a partner that takes an integrated and innovative approach to your health care, please schedule an appointment today. We want to help you feel and look your very best.

Using an online survey, Austin Monthly solicited peer nominations from physicians in the greater Austin area, asking them to nominate up to three doctors per practice area who they would trust with the medical care of themselves or their family. To ensure the nomination process is peer-based, full contact information was requested before nominating, and doctors were asked to limit their nominations to physicians whose work they’ve personally witnessed. Austin Monthly then tallied the results, selecting the top percentage of vote recipients in each practice area before submitting the final list to our fact-checking process, which includes a review of good standing among medical boards.
Doctors do not and cannot pay to be a part of the list. We recognize that many good doctors are not included on the list; this is only a sampling of a huge array of talented professionals within the region. We encourage all consumers to do their own research before selecting a doctor.

At Austin Family Allergy and Asthma, Dr. Lieberman, and nurse practitioner Jill Apodaca pride themselves on offering the best possible care to their patients. We see patients of all ages from infants to seniors, for many allergic conditions including asthma, cedar fever, and food allergy. We offer allergy testing for young infants and early introduction of peanut to infants at 6 months of age. Additionally, we are one of the few practices in Central Texas to offer infant oral immunotherapy (OIT) for very young patients with peanut allergy. For those with severe seasonal allergies, especially to cedar or oak pollen, allergy drops offer a safe and effective alternative to shots. This is especially popular amongst our younger patients. Dr. Lieberman has been annually recognized as Top Docs by Austin Monthly and Super Doctors by Texas Monthly for the past 20 years. He works with many local school districts and childcare facilities to ensure best practices and standards for food allergy care, helping to ensure the safety of thousands of Central Texas students. There is no need to suffer any longer with Austin’s severe allergies, we can help. Please give us a call to set up an appointment with Jill or Dr Lieberman, same day appointments are often available.

After police placed a 24-hour ban on topless women, enraged locals gathered downtown on Mardi Gras wearing nothing but pants.
BY ROSIE NINESLING
AT 10 P.M. ON FEB. 27, 2001, troves of policemen clad in full riot gear stood shoulder to shoulder, circumnavigating the corner of Trinity and Sixth streets. Their target? A group of 50 women and drag queens huddled together in topless solidarity, with organizer Caroline Estes at the center of it all.
A week before, Estes found herself arguing with the city’s police chief on the front steps of APD headquarters. The official had declared that for one night only—Mardi Gras—it would be illegal for a woman to show her breasts in public. (The previous year, teenagers swarmed Sixth Street in a chaotic frenzy after the bars closed to catch a glimpse of nude revelers.) Pinning the blame on women, Estes declared, was “a pile of bullsh*t.”
While police said the rule was to prevent any chance of rioting, Estes knew it was an excuse. What they were actually afraid of was women not acquiescing to their demands, she believes. “We’ll arrest you and everyone else who tries it,” the protestor remembers the chief saying. “Get a van,” she responded. “That’ll be a great picture on the front of the newspapers.”
After Estes placed ads in local periodicals and put up fliers at gay bars around town, a wide range of residents showed up that night topless for their so-called “tit-in” to support a woman’s right to go bare-chested. As she had correctly predicted, the officers had their hands legally tied. All they could do was watch from behind their shields—talk about male gaze!
Within days, Playboy would pick up the story and share it nationally. Years later, it would be Estes’ inspiration to use naked activism for political change. But for that night, the message was already clear: The nipple was—and will always be—free in Austin.
