THE DESIGN METHOD
RUBY CLOUTIER
Interior design is oftenseen as an exerciseinaesthetics— an arrangement of color, texture, and proportion meant to delight the eye. But forme, designissomethingfar deeper It is not justabout what aspace lookslike; it is about how it breathes, howitfeels underfoot at sunrise, howitechoes with the rhythms of daily life. This is the essenceofmy approach, methoddesigning—aphilosophythat mirrorsthe intensityand emotionaldepth of method acting.
BEYOND AESTHETICS
Designing from the Inside OutTraditional interior design oftenbegins with avisualreference—a mood board, a collection of materials, apredefined style.Myprocess, however, startsinadifferent place: inside the lifethat will unfold withinthe space. Istepintomyclient’sworld, absorbingtheir routines, their emotions, their unspoken needs.Iimagine howtheir mornings begin, how they winddown in the evenings, howthe space should respondto the momentsinbetween. This means testing materials in shifting lightconditions, walkinga floor planin my mind beforeit’sbuilt, andevencuratingthe acousticsofa space toenhance itsatmosphere.

Fewarchitectsembodytheintersectionofdesign, advocacy, and educationasseamlesslyasJuan Miró.His work is atestament to thebeliefthat architectureisnotmerelyaboutcreatingbeautiful structures, but aboutshaping environments that enhancethe humanexperience. As therecipient of this year’s Legacy Award, Miró stands as a beacon forhow architecture canengagewith nature, pushthe boundaries of urbanism, and fightfor amorehumanebuilt environment.
Born in Barcelonaand raised in Madrid,Miró grew up immersed in thericharchitectural traditions of Spain. He studiedatthe Escuela de Arquitectura at theUniversidad Politecnica deMadridbeforeearningaFulbrightScholarship to pursue apost-professional master’s degree at Yale University. His career took himtoNew York, where he worked with Gwathmey Siegel & Associates before ultimately findinghis home in Austin,Texas,co-foundingMiróRiveraArchitects in 2000.
What sets Miró apartishis abilitytosee Austin notasa placetobemoldedinthe imageof ourEuropeancounterparts, butasa uniquely American “landscape city,” as he callsit, that thrivesinits relationship with nature.“This city is differentfromwhatweassume is theright waytobeurban,” Miró says.“It hasDNA that hasnothing to do with [European] cities,” but rather hasprecedentsinMayan andpre-colonial America.
This perspectiveisembeddedinMiróRivera Architects’work, whichhas shaped some of the
most remarkable residentialdesigns in Austin andbeyond. The firm’s projects create dialogue betweenland, light, and thepeoplewho inhabit them.Miróiskeenlyaware that architecture should notimposeitselfonnature, butrather integrateintoit. “Havinga beautifulsiteisthe best thingthatcan happentoyou –justdon’t mess it up,” he says
Beyond hisprofessional practice,Miróisa reverededucatoratthe University of Texasat Austin, wherehehas been teaching since1998 Hisinfluenceonyoung architects extendsfar beyond theclassroom; he instills in them asense ofresponsibility, curiosity, andadvocacy.Heurges hisstudentstoengagewiththeir surroundings, to question norms, andtorecognize theirpower to shapenot just buildings, butcommunities
Perhapsthe most significant exampleofthis is his fightagainst windowless dormitoriesin Austin.Itwas in hisclassroomthathefirst learnedofthisdisturbingtrend—students, assigned to asimpleexerciseofsketching the window in theirbedroom, revealedthatmanyof them hadnone. Outraged,Mirótookaction. He wroteop-eds, spokeatCityCouncil meetings, andmobilized students to push fora change Hisrelentlessefforts ledtoa landmark decision in April2024whenthe Austin City Council officially banned theconstructionofwindowless dormitories.
Miró sees this victorynot as apersonaltriumph, butasa reflection of what collective action can achieve. “The fact that thestudentsare now
awareofitand have createda permanentsystem that hasleadershipisexciting,”hesays. “They mobilized, theyfought, they wroteletters. And when 800studentswrite to theCityCouncil saying,‘Youare notprotectingus,’thatwas what made thedifference.”
Hisinfluenceisnow extendingbeyondAustin. He hasbeenworking tirelesslytochangethe InternationalBuildingCode, therootcause that allowedwindowlessbedroomstobelegally built in the firstplace.“What Idiscoveredis that Chicagochanged it.Washington, D.C. made thechange. Now, in Austin, wehavemadethe change,” Miró explains.“So it canexpand.”
Miró’s legacy is notjustinthe structures he has designed, but in theideas he haschampioned. He hashelpedredefine what Austin architecture canbe, notthrough imitationofother cities, but byembracingitsownidentity. He hasempowered students to usetheir voices andreminded architects that theirresponsibility extendsfar beyond aesthetics. His work serves as areminder that architecture, atits core, isabout humanity ForMiró, thefutureisnot aboutimposinga vision onto thecity, butabout protecting what makesitspecial.“Austin haswelcomedso many people, and it will continue to change,” he acknowledges.“Butwemustbecareful notto lose thethingsweloveabout it in theprocess.”
As he stepsontothe stagetoaccept theLegacy Award, Miró does so notasanarchitect looking back on acompleted career, but rather, still deeply engagedinshaping thefuture—one student, oneproject, and onecityata time
