cochlear implants at Central Valley Elementary School in New York. I love taekwondo, soccer, and gaming. Last year, my mom, dad, sister, and I took the trip of a lifetime: we went all the way to Thailand, to see where my dad is from and visit our family.
First, we flew from New York, to South Korea, to Bangkok. It was a LONG trip! In Bangkok, the busy capital city of Thailand, we visited the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and saw the Yaks (“giants” in Thai)—huge statues that are considered “guardians” of the temple. Next, we went to Koh Samui, an island where we rented motor bikes to explore the beaches, temples, and resorts. Then came an animal
adventure in Phukhet. I got to ride on an elephant’s head at the elephant sanctuary, my dad volunteered to step into a king cobra snake pit at a show, and we watched a performance with three monkeys swimming, riding a bike, and even playing basketball ! Last, we took a long ferry ride to Phi Phi Island, where we went on a long tail boat—a really long canoe with a motor—to visit Monkey Beach. Along the way, we stopped to see monkeys, swim with the fish, and hike a mountain. My mom and sister ended their hike midway through, but my dad and I hiked all the way to the top ourselves, where we had a fresh coconut drink and took in the views. I highly recommend that everyone takes a trip to Thailand one day. It is so culturally diverse and beautiful!

Breaking the Silence with Dhavina Hi, I’m Dhavina, a tenth grader from New Mexico, who loves traveling, playing tennis, and listening to music. I wear one cochlear implant and one hearing aid, and I’ve been a Girl Scout for 11 years. Now, I am working to earn the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award by creating a service project to support other teens with hearing loss, in partnership with Hearing Our Way.
Dhavina’s Golden Advice: Lean into resources like Hearing Our Way! My Hearing Our Way magazine subscription was my “activation present,” and it’s been one of my favorite things to read through the years. I have found so much inspiration and empowerment through the magazine. Then, I was gifted The BIG Book of Hearing Our Way, and I haven’t put it down since! I love the stories and the way I can relate to so many of the kids I read about. Even though I don’t know anyone else with hearing loss near me, I never feel alone when Hearing Our Way is by my side.
