MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
CHARTING OUR PATH TO A NEW NORMAL The past two years have been a roller coaster, but we have not wasted this crisis. We have used the pandemic and its challenges as an opportunity to grow – not just as a company, but as individuals. I have been inspired and heartened by our team’s ability to adapt, to execute, and to keep a sense of humor in the toughest of situations. Building resilience is not just part of our purpose, but we have learned how to live it day in and day out. Increased flexibility and adaptability are here to stay. It is time to chart our path to a new normal. In the coming year, we will set the tone for our company culture and create a workplace that is more diverse, inclusive, and collaborative. Our purpose – to build a sustainable, well, more resilient society – is more important now than ever. This purpose demonstrates our optimism about the work we do and the impact we can have will drive us forward in the years to come. It will be our true north as we navigate future disruptions and crises. Because it is not a question of if, but when, the next challenge will come. In the coming year, I am most excited about three initiatives: (1) creating clear expectations for all our colleagues as we continue our transition to a colleague first culture, (2) evaluating business expansion opportunities locally and nationally, and (3) investigating how to adopt Environmental-Social-Governance standards to demonstrate our dedication to achieving the greater good through our work. Together, these initiatives will help create an outstanding culture and position HEAPY for healthy, sustainable business growth for years to come. Thank you for the dedication and support you have demonstrated. While I know we still have challenges to overcome, we are working towards a bright future for all our colleagues and the communities we serve. I look forward to charting this path with all of you.

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loan Forgiveness Overcame frequent, unpredictable Governmental and financial institution rules changes. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
First Health Central Plant, Pinehurst, NC Flew a local North Carolina owner to Ohio for the Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care (SSHC). Followed up with tours of local HEAPY-designed facilities and demonstrated our collaborative strengths and attention to client needs. RESULT Awarded the project over numerous well-known, incumbent design firms and built a resume for future growth in the area. In addition, we are already working on a new women’s health center as a result. OUR MISSION BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Greater Columbus Convention Center In 2021, Marketing received an RFP for improving the IAQ for the Convention Center, a multi-million square foot facility. The RFP called for a design to add Needlepoint Bi-Polar Ionization (NBPI) to more than 50 air handling units. Upon further discussion, the design team felt NPBI was not the best decision for the client from both performance and cost standpoints. During the proposal and interview phases, these concerns were discussed and alternatives to NBPI were described. It would have been easy to do what the client wanted and win the job, but the team focused on what was best for the facility, as well as the health and wellness of occupants. Our dedication to our purpose guided our decision making and led to our success. RESULT Won the project and strengthened a client relationship. The Launch of the New Wellness Platform – Virgin Pulse Partnered with McGohan Brabender to determine the most comprehensive and resilient Wellness Platform. Searched for a single site with a results-based program, woven into our culture that could provide impactful wellness information in lieu of a simple annual blood draw. RESULT The Virgin Pulse Wellness Platform to show care for our colleagues and make a real difference in our overall health and well-being. REVIT and Network Improvements Throughout 2021, the Information Technology and Engineering and Digital Services departments worked together to significantly increase the opportunity for production efficiency of our REVIT users. This included: • Significant hardware upgrades for both network and servers • Upgraded connectivity between HEAPY offices • Significant power upgrades in data center for increased resilience • Roll-out of new design automation scripts and processes • Focused effort on training and usage reporting related to design automation scripts and processes RESULT Better inter-office connectivity, REVIT performance improvements. VEGA The project was to provide an ICT design for a new manufacturing facility and office space containing two primary data centers. The challenge was that a design of this size and scope would normally require 3 months to complete, but only three weeks were available. The team worked in real time via MS Teams to meet the aggressive schedule. RESULT Fully completed design made possible through REAL Collaboration, REAL Performance, and REAL Inspiration. Miami Valley Hospital – New Chilled Water Plant The project was to build a new 3,000-ton chilled water plant. The challenge was that hospital operations could not be impacted. Efforts were required at all times of day throughout the pandemic. RESULT A completed chilled water plant installation without facility downtime. BUILDING OPTIMIZATION
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Commissioning This was a four-year Commissioning project of a new expansion to the existing Main Hospital. The project challenged our team with new systems, aggressive project deadlines, and extensive complexity. The project team worked tirelessly onsite throughout the pandemic to make sure we met client needs. Details: • 650,000 SF Critical Care Building • Eight-story tower • 150 beds • 12,000 GSF Utility Building RESULT Children’s Hospital operating efficiently, effectively, and reliably. Indiana National Guard Muscatatuck Urban Training Center Steam Plant This is one of the largest steam projects HEAPY has ever tackled. The plant supports a facility that trains and prepares Indiana National Guard personnel. Project Goals: • Remove coal from steam plant operations. Two coal-fired boilers combined for 65,000 lbs/hr. • Convert steam plant to 100% natural gas operation. This will reduce fuel costs, and improve operational efficiencies, boiler turndown, and fuel source reliability. • Provide at least 50% mechanical and fuel source redundancy. • Convert existing fuel-oil boilers to dual-fuel boilers. • Provide a new control room meeting local and national regulations. UC Health ED Tower & Surgery Infill This exceptionally challenging project involved modification and renovation of a 100-year-old hospital on a crowded urban campus, including the demolition of three buildings and a 274,000 SF addition (with potential for 300,000 SF of future growth). It was halted during the pandemic and, upon restart, the original schedule still had to be met. Lead designers had weekly coordination meetings to discuss tasks and delegation of work. HEAPY designed piping systems that totaled 1.5 MILES in length running from the UC East Central Utility Plant. This included 24” chilled water lines, 16” high pressure steam lines, and two sets of condensate lines. Lighting design required collaboration between HEAPY, the client, and the architectural lighting designer, beating ASHRAE 90.1 energy allowances by 76%. Features include green LED lighting in the operating rooms, reducing eye stress and strain, glare on the video screens, as well as enhancing the color red on the patient’s body. Additionally, everything is backed up by generator power. RESULT The project was delivered in an expedited manner to minimize equipment cost escalation and still met the original project schedule. HEAPY’s LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT is a three-year colleague journey that encompasses external professional management training, HEAPY led workshops and a mentor – protégé program, which pairs HEAPY senior leadership with each protégé. The program continues to grow and strengthen HEAPY’s next generation of leadership, and also broadens our colleagues’ personal horizons to continuously improve our culture. HEATHER RICHMUND Heather is a true partner and advocate for our clients, focused on developing meaningful, long-term relationships and ensuring successful project outcomes. She is also our Indianapolis Officer Leader, where she helps to connect HEAPY to the local community and supports our colleagues.

The goal of our HEAPY Community Involvement Week is to “Give Back” to the communities that support our livelihood in a way to say thanks via our charitable service efforts. All HEAPY employees volunteer in various charitable activities to give back to the cities and communities where we all live, work and play.
In 2021, colleagues chose activities including park clean up, donating blood and platelets, recycling, and volunteering at foodbanks, park districts, Habitat for Humanity, zoos, Shoes for the Shoeless, 4 Paws for Ability, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
