Pussy Riot- In Conversation and Q&A November 17, 2016 Wisconsin Union Theater HOST: Wisconsin Union Theater Downtown Memorial Union 800 Langdon St. Madison, WI 53706 Often performing with distinct, colorful masks, Pussy Riot is a feminist punk rock band from Russia. It was founded in August 2011 and its music focuses on feminism, LGBT rights and opposition to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Their guerrilla performances landed three of their members in Russian prison while other members left the country fearing prosecution. Their case was adopted by human rights groups including Amnesty International, which designated the women prisoners of conscience, and by over 100 entertainers, including Adele, Madonna, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, and others. A couple of members made a guest appearance on House of Cards season 3.

Go Big Read author and sociologist Matthew Desmond speaks to students and faculty Wednesday.

UW-Madison Alumnus, Go Big Read Author At Head Of Class

“To write a lot you have got to write a lot. You have to write when you’re tired.

When you have a headache. When you’re not in the mood. When you’re on a train or plane,” Desmond said. “You have to try to expand the capacity to write.”

The emphasis on writing resonated with Paulina Garcia Del Moral, a postdoctoral fellow.

“As a recent Ph.D., this is what I aspire to,” she said. “We’re all scared of the blank page. Becoming a better writer is an important part of who we are as academics.”

David Skalinder, a graduate student studying sociology, said hearing Desmond talk was a great example of the Wisconsin Idea in action.

“He’s one reason I came here,” Skalinder said. “For me, this is extra training in how to do this. It’s exactly the right book and research for what’s happening right now.”

For Courtney Deisch, a graduate student in sociology, hearing Desmond speak passionately about “Evicted” added to the impact of reading the book and gave her ideas about her own work.

“We read a lot of very theoretical work. This is more written in a way that’s accessible to the general public,” she said. “This is a public problem and we need public discourse. And I think this book bridges that gap and makes it accessible to policymakers.”

The common-reading program aims to engage students, faculty, staff and the entire community around issues that matter from a range of perspectives. The book has been popular, with 222 UW–Madison classes using it as part of their curriculum. All freshmen received a copy of the book at convocation.

Go Big Read has a history of choosing timely topics that are part of the national discussion. Last year’s Go Big Read book, “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson, highlighted racial inequality and the need to reform America’s justice system.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison invites you to participate in its common book program, Go Big Read. Initiated by past Chancellor Carolyn “Biddy” Martin, the program will engage members of the campus community and beyond in a shared, academically focused reading experience. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to participate by reading the book, and taking part in classroom discussions and campus events.

As a graduate student, Matthew Desmond spent countless hours in class at the Sewell Social Sciences Building. On Wednesday morning, he was at the front of the class, leading a discussion about his book “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.”

The book is this year’s Go Big Read selection and on Tuesday night, Desmond spoke to more than 1,000 people at Shannon Hall in the Memorial Union. His Wednesday morning discussion was much more intimate, with an audience made up mostly of sociology graduate students and faculty.

“Evicted” tells the stories of eight Milwaukee OR PLANE,” families faced with losing their homes. It’s also a powerful analysis of a little-known epidemic affecting people across the country living in poverty.

In his book, Desmond writes that in the early 20th century, evictions in the U.S. were somewhat rare and popularly contested. Now they have become a frequent occurrence for low-income families, especially those headed by black women.

Desmond discussed his research process and the intricacies of negotiating his role as a sociologist while getting to know the subjects of his research. To ensure accuracy, he hired a fact checker to go through his entire book.

“That was a really helpful process,” Desmond said. “I just wanted to make sure I got everything right. That was important to me. If you have a message like this and you get something wrong, that’s the story.”

He also emphasized the importance of good writing, remembering his days as a graduate student when he thought you had to be in the right mood and location for writing — and then you just wrote for a couple of hours.

champion Alabama, and Paul Chryst was an assistant in the NFL, not running the show at Wisconsin.

That’s when LeBron James was a freshman in high school, not an NBA icon, and Vince Biegel was 6 years old, not a standout outside linebacker for the Badgers.

UW was ranked 11th in the nation and on its way to a second-straight Big Ten championship in 1999 when it went on the road and walloped the Wildcats 3519.

Since then the neighboring clubs — separated by 142 miles and the Illinois state line — have faced one another 10 times with Northwestern winning six.

That includes all four meetings at the smallest football stadium in the league (47,330).

“It’s a strange thing,” UW senior tailback Dare Ogunbowale said Monday.

“We’ve had some great teams here. For that to be a thing just shows how big of a game this is for us and how well they play against us.”

Though the Badgers (6-2 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten) still don’t control their destiny in their quest to represent the West Division in the conference championship game Dec. 3 in Indianapolis, none of their next three opponents have a winning record overall, including the Wildcats (4-4, 3-2). That’s triggered a collective sigh from some UW followers who believe the worst is over.

Wisconsin has famously faced five top-10 teams in its first eight games, winning three times on the way to becoming bowl eligible for the 15th-consecutive season. Since that gauntlet has run its course, some think the stress will ease.

“I think it is easy to buy into what people may be saying on the outside as far as getting through the gauntlet and this being the easy part of the schedule,” UW senior cornerback Sojourn Shelton said.

“No part of playing college football games are easy,” Shelton said. “Our whole thing is just not getting complacent. I think we’ve played pretty good football. Now it’s just staying consistent.”

Long before the season began, fans and media members obsessed over the perceived difficulty of Wisconsin’s schedule. The season opener with No. 5 LSU gave way to assignments versus No. 8 Michigan State, No. 4 Michigan, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 7 Nebraska.

The Badgers more than held their own in each. They knocked off LSU 1614, Michigan State 30-6 and Nebraska 23-17 in overtime. They endured close losses to Michigan (14-7) and Ohio State (30-23 in OT).

At every step along the way, Chryst has calmly preached focus.

“That’s one of the things that we knew going into the season, that there would be a lot of outside noise and it doesn’t help you as a player and us as a team,” he said.

“You’ve got to try and ignore all the outside noise because none of it matters.

We know this is a tough stretch.”

So much of Wisconsin’s recent history against the Wildcats boggles the mind and not in a good way.

This is the fifth straight time UW has traveled to Evanston ranked in the top 20 — 20th in 2003; 14th in ‘05; 17th in ‘09 and 17th in ‘14 — to face an unrated opponent.

The Badgers lost at Ryan Field in 205 despite cranking out 48 points and in 2009 even though they scored 31.

Some perspective: Dating back to 1889, Wisconsin is 151-2 when scoring 40 or more points. The only losses were to the Wildcats in 2000 (47-44 in double OT) and in 2005 (51-48).

UW has lost in Evanston with a 200yard rusher: Melvin Gordon had 259 in 2014.

The Badgers have fallen at Ryan Field with a 300-yard passer: John Stocco had

326 in 2005.

Wisconsin has failed to win in Evanston despite allowing 73 yards rushing (2009) and despite coming to town unbeaten (5-0 in 2005).

You can see why UW players and coaches roll their eyes when people talk about the schedule getting easier, especially with their next assignment. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a football season where November was an easy month,” Chryst said.

“We didn’t look at the gauntlet like a gauntlet,” Ogunbowale said. “We looked at the whole season as a challenge, an opportunity to do good things. That still goes on.

“We don’t look at anything differently now that the gauntlet, as people have said, is done.”

Since 1999, the Big Ten has expanded

twice to 14 members and seen six schools change football coaches five times.

Since their victory in Evanston 17 years ago, the Badgers have won 154 games and four Big Ten titles.

Wisconsin has its eyes on another league championship and, perhaps, a berth in the four-team College Football Playoff.

“All our goals are still in front of us, but we’ve got to take care of business,” junior tight end Troy Fumagalli said.

The Voice: Badgers Taking Chances To Have A Chance COLLEGE FOOTBALL CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE, BUT BADGERS’ TOUGHNESS HAS BEEN CONSTANT

by Matt Lepay Voice Of The Badgers It is an easy trap. Watch a team early in the season and make a final declaration.

Either that team is really good, or it stinks.

Take Penn State. After watching them get run over by a truck named Michigan, I figured the Nittany Lions were in for another long year. Last Friday night during dinner, a few of us were talking about whether Penn State could give Ohio State trouble.

Night game in Happy Valley. Another “White Out.” It sounds good, and it always looks good, but the consensus was the Lions simply lacked the weapons to win.

Naturally, Penn State won the game.

So it goes in the wacky world of college football.

Think about what has transpired already this season. Who had Michigan State losing five straight games? Who had Nebraska winning its first seven outings?

Northwestern had a rugged start, which included home losses to Western Michigan, Illinois State and Nebraska. Suddenly, the Wildcats are on a roll, having won three in a row. Just like everyone figured, right?

The above examples are just from the Big Ten. Anyone have Stanford with a 2-3 record in the Pac-12? Losing to Colorado by the everyday football score of 10-5?

Remember early in the season when the pundits considered Houston a serious threat to make the College Football Playoff? Two losses later, which includes last week’s humbling 38-16 defeat to SMU, and the Cougars have moved off the radar.

Remember all the talk that Texas is back? The Longhorns are 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.

I have yet to even mention Notre Dame. Enough said.

For the Badgers, people wondered how they would navigate a schedule many consider to be among the most challenging, if not THE most challenging in the nation. It was a fair question, made even more interesting given the number of injuries this team has faced.

One player returns, another player or two exits. Yet, the Badgers keep playing, and they keep playing well. Not perfectly, but certainly well enough each week to give themselves a chance.

One of Paul Chryst’s favorite sayings is “Give yourself a chance to have a chance.”

Through seven games, his team is doing just that, led by a defense that — so far — is one of the very best in college football. Simply stated, it is all-day nasty.

The fun of sport is its unpredictable nature. Not just with teams, but with individuals. Last Saturday, the Badgers made it work with tag-team quarterbacks. They also go against the norm by shuffling the offensive line. Neither is necessarily because of injuries. They do it because they believe it gives them their best chance to win.

In other words, it gives them a chance to have a chance.

Which leads to yet another exciting week here in Madtown. Another night game against an unbeaten team. Halloween Weekend with the Badgers and the Huskers.

Anyone care to predict how this tussle will unfold? I am fairly certain Camp Randall Stadium will be loud again. Other than that, I have no bold prediction.

We might believe we have all the answers, but the truth is we do not. As far as your favorite team is concerned, it seems we have learned it is a tough outfit that has earned a lot of national respect.

As we approach the end of October, we have learned the Badgers are in a position where they have given themselves a chance to … well, by now you should know the rest of the sentence.

In my opinion Sean Connery is the true 007. He made the iconic role with his acting style. Born Thomas Connery in the Fountainbridge district of Edinburgh, Scotland on August 25, 1930. He grew up impoverished. The son of a truck-driver, he came from a background very different from that of his screen alter-ego. After leaving school, he joined the Royal Navy, but was released due to ulcers. He had many jobs, including laborer, lifeguard and model for art classes. But it was his career as a bodybuilder that led to his representing Scotland in the 1953 Mr. Universe contest, in which he placed 3rd. This in turn led to a job in the chorus with the touring company of South Pacific.

He appeared in several stage productions, and made his television debut in 1956. He signed a movie contract with MGM in the late 1950’s, which led to a string of film roles.

He was cast as the first cinematic James Bond in Dr. No in 1962. He won the role over Cary Grant, Rex Harrison, Trevor Howard, Patrick McGoohan and Roger Moore, even though Ian Fleming was quoted as saying, “He [Connery] is not exactly what I envisioned” as the fictional British agent . However, the film was a success, which led to 3 more Bond films in the next 5 years.

Tired of being identified only as 007, Connery quit the role after You Only Live Twice, in order to devote more time to his family and to golf. The next Bond film starred George Lazenby, but Connery was persuaded to return as Bond in Diamonds are Forever. With that role, he said he was finished as Bond, but he returned in 1983’s Never Say Never Again, which was not an “official” Bond film, as it was produced by Kevin McClory instead of Eon. This film did not help his relations with Bond producer Cubby Broccoli, with whom Connery was feuding

Connery has played many varied roles in films over the years, working with directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston and Brian De Palma. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as the Golden Globe award in 1987, for his role as the Irish cop Malone in The Untouchables. He was also named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1989. He continues to work steadily, despite suffering from various throat ailments.

In part due to this, widespread false rumors of his death circulated in 1993.

Connery is an avid golfer (he learned the game for 1964’s Goldfinger) and in 1996 won the Lexus Challenge golf tournament with pro Hale Irwin.

In 1990, Connery received the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1995, he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field,” given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In 1997, he was honored with a Gala Tribute by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York and in 1998, received a the British Academy Fellowship from BAFTA. He was honored by the Kennedy Center in 1999. He became Sir Sean Connery in July 2000, received a knighthood from the British government, despite being refused the honor 2 years previously for political reasons. He has also received awards in France, including the Legion d’Honeur, and the Commandeur des Arts and des Lettres Sean Connery has been married twice. His first wife was actress Diane Cilento.

In an ironic twist, their son, actor Jason Connery, portrayed James Bond creator Ian Fleming in the film Spymaker. Sean has been married to French artist Micheline Roquebrune since 1975.
