GARDEN FOR YOUR HEALTH

Many gardeners know what scientists have only recently discovered: gardening reduces stress. Getting your hands dirty can provide a variety of other health benefits, too. Gardening may improve fitness levels, promote weight loss, and lead to better eating. Reducing Stress, Improving Fitness A 2011 study from the Journal of Health Psychology gave participants a stressful task and then randomly assigned them either 30 minutes of outdoor gardening or indoor reading. Both led to decreases in the stress hormone cortisol, but the decreases were “significantly stronger” for the gardeners. New exercisers tend to focus on dedicated aerobic activities like walking, running, cycling or dance. According to Swedish researchers, gardening and other household activities can be just as good as formal aerobic exercise for reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. In fact, the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute considers gardening for 30 to 45 minutes moderate physical activity. Without realizing it, you could burn around 300 calories an hour just by mowing, digging and weeding. Promoting Weight Loss Cathleen D. Zick and colleagues at the University of Utah studied community gardeners and found that they had a lower body mass index than their nongardening neighbors. According to the report, published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2013, gardeners were also less likely to be overweight or obese. Gardeners may also register lower weights because they eat the fruits of their labor.

Dig It! How to Get Started Plan. A well-planned garden can save time, money and frustration. Notice what your neighbors are successfully growing in their gardens. You can also learn more about your growing zone and soil quality. The American Horticultural Society offers a list of native plant societies in the U.S., as well as Plant Hardiness and Heat Zone maps, on its website, www.ahs.org. Visit or call a native plant society in your area for more help. Start slowly. Try planting a small garden at first. If you don’t have a yard, think about container gardening. Slowly increase your gardening time over several sessions to reduce the chance of muscle soreness. Choose tools wisely. Tools that are too big or too small for your height can damage your back. Select tools that don’t compromise your posture. Use additional equipment that will help you garden comfortably, such as knee pads or stools. Dress appropriately. Protect yourself. Wear old, loose clothing; strong shoes; gardening gloves; and a hat. Pay attention to your body. Many gardening tasks favor the dominant hand and that side of the body. Maximize the health benefits by trying some tasks, like digging and watering, with your nondominant hand. 6 Must-Have Herbs Whether grown in your garden or purchased at the store, these herbs can add flavor to your favorite soups, salads, main courses and more. Basil – good for Italian dishes, pesto, and sandwiches. Try a slice of fresh mozzarella and tomato with ribbons of basil atop a whole wheat cracker. Chives – good for potatoes and salad garnishes. If cooking with chopped chives, add them near the end to retain their mild taste. Cilantro – good for salsas, salads, and soups. Use cilantro stems when making the popular Indian entrée chicken tikka masala. Then garnish with the leaves. Parsley – good for garnishes, sauces, and salads. Many chefs prefer flat-leaf, or Italian, parsley to curly parsley for cooking. Both work as garnishes. Rosemary – good for meat dishes, bread, and pizza. Pierce veggies with stiff rosemary branches for skewers that add flavor, and then grill. Thyme – good for vegetables, chicken, and fish. Brighten angel hair pasta and garden veggies with lemon, thyme and a drizzle of olive oil. TOPS Club Inc.® (Take Off Pounds Sensibly®) is the original weight-loss support and wellness education organization. FVisitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. Membership is affordable at just $32 per year in the U.S. and $36 per year in Canada, plus nominal chapter fees. To find a local chapter, view www.tops.org or call (800) 932-8677.

MDs give tips to make the most of your eye exam Your most recent pair of glasses and/or contact lenses. Being able

by Cheryl L. Dejewski

“One of the best ways of improving your health is to plan regular checkups—with your doctor, dentist and eye care specialist. However, many of us procrastinate thinking, ‘if it isn’t broken, why fix it?’ Or, we are hesitant about what to do or ask. But, regular check-ups not only protect your body—they help your wallet by keeping future health costs to a minimum,” says ophthalmologist and surgeon Brett Rhode, MD. He and his partners at Eye Care Specialists provide the following tips to help make the most of your next visit to an eye doctor (or other physician).

REASONS

TO SCHEDULE According to Daniel Ferguson, MD, an ophthalmologist who treats thousands of patients each year, “Poor vision or changes to your sight should not be dismissed. Have regular eye exams every two years and schedule an appointment right away if you notice concerns.” These include: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Foggy, fuzzy or blurred vision Sensitivity to light and glare “Starbursts” around lights Holding items closer to view Needing brighter light to read Fading or yellowing of colors Difficulty judging stairs or curbs Difficulty seeing to drive at night Vision affects ability to do tasks Vertical lines appear wavy Dark or blind spots in vision Glasses and prescription changes don’t improve your vision

FREE INFORMATION “Educating yourself about the symptoms, causes and risks of common eye conditions can help ensure that you and your family see life to the fullest—both now AND in the future. Being knowledgeable also helps you realize the importance of scheduling regular eye exams to check for sight-threatening conditions that may not always show symptoms,” says Mark Freedman MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists. His practice is one of the only in the country to write, publish and distribute a series of free, detailed educational booklets on AMD, cataracts, diabetes, dry eyes and glaucoma. For free copies, call 414-321-7035. If it’s time to schedule a comprehensive exam (typically covered by Medicare and insurance) or you would like a second opinion, feel free to contact one of the offices at right.

to check what you are used to wearing helps your doctor to determine a new prescription that best suits you.

Any eye-related medication(s) or drop(s) you use. “This helps

us evaluate how well it is working or if a change is needed in medication or dosage,” explains David Scheidt, OD, an optometrist who also assists with the pre- and postoperative care of cataract patients.

Dr. Mark Freedman recommends that family members attend appointments to help learn and remember exam results and treatment guidelines.

Medicare and insurance card(s) A list of your other medications

(oral, injectable, over-the-counter, and herbal). This is especially important if you take medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, infections or arthritis, since these may affect your vision and/or adversely react with certain eye medicines.

WHEN YOU SCHEDULE Concisely describe any vision problems you know you have. Ask if your eyes will be dilated. Will you be able to drive yourself? How long will your vision be affected? Ask about cost & payment policies. Do they accept your insurance(s)?

WHAT

TO

BRING

Lists of the following: o Any existing eye problems o Previous eye injuries or surgeries o Your health condition (allergies, chronic problems, operations, etc.) o Family history of eye problems (glaucoma, cataracts, etc.) o Any vision-related questions See suggestions at right —> in “Questions to Ask” section.

QUESTIONS

TO ASK A continuing education lecturer for audiences of up to 120 fellow eye care providers, Michael Raciti, MD, suggests that patients give thought in advance of their appointment to preparing questions that they would like answered. He offers the following suggestions to start your list:

o Should I watch for and notify you of any particular symptoms? o What tests do I need? Why are they necessary? When should I have them? o What is the best medical/surgical treatment for me? o When will treatment start, and how long will it last? o What are the risks, side effects, benefits and success rates of treatment? o Are there foods, drugs, or activities I should avoid? o Are other treatments available? o If I need to take a medication, what should I do if I miss a dose? o Would diet, exercise or lifestyle changes improve my condition? o Would eye-related vitamin and mineral supplements be helpful? o When should I schedule my next appointment?

o What is my visual acuity–20/__? o Do I have any eye disorders? o What caused my condition? o Is this condition hereditary? Should my family members be checked? o How will it affect my vision and lifestyle—now and in the future?

Dr. Daniel Paskowitz encourages patients to be educated partners in their care by asking questions and reading the free booklets and handouts his practice offers.

EYE CARE SPECIALISTS

Are you putting your vision at risk? Most people aren’t motivated to make an eye appointment unless they notice a problem—and often not even then. What they don’t realize is that many sight-threatening conditions have no warning signs. But, if you know the risks, symptoms, tests and treatment options for common eye concerns, you’re more likely to take action. We can help. Call 414-321-7035 for detailed free booklets on cataracts, glaucoma, AMD, and diabetes. Then, consider: When was your last eye exam? If it was more than a year ago, call today to protect your vision for tomorrow.

EYE MDS OFFER: TIPS FOR SEEING CLEARLY DURING ALLERGY SEASON

By Cheryl L. Dejewski Spring is finally here. It’s time to get out and enjoy the simple joys of Wisconsin’s much-too-short outdoor activities season. For many people, however, a stroll through the park or an afternoon in the garden brings tears to their eyes. Why the unhappiness? Allergy sufferers often face a host of problems that affect their vision. This overview may help to explain and alleviate some of the problems caused by eye allergies. What are the symptoms of eye allergies? “Symptoms typically include watery or itchy eyes, mucous build-up, difficulty focusing, discomfort wearing contact lenses, as well as other setbacks. Fortunately, these symptoms are usually easy to treat,” says David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. How do eye allergies occur? “For some people, certain particles in the air (like pollen, animal hairs, dust, or molds) can cause specific eye cells to release allergy activators such as histamine. These activators then create symptoms of irritation. Many people with eye allergies have a history of hay fever or other allergic problems. An allergist can test to find the cause of your allergies,” says eye surgeon and ophthalmologist Michael Raciti, MD.

His partner at Eye Care Specialists, Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, adds, “Often, you can find the cause yourself with a little detective work. For example, if you get red, itchy eyes every spring, it’s probably due to pollen. Or, perhaps you notice a connection to coming into contact with dust, mold or pets.” What is contact dermatitis? “Contact dermatitis is an inflammation that occurs when a substance that is an irritant or causes an allergic reaction comes in contact with the skin. The inflammation can occur in one area and spread to others. Common causes of contact dermatitis from irritants are soaps, detergents, bleach, solvents, waxes, polishes, hand cleaners and medications. Common causes of contact dermatitis from allergic reactions are cosmetics, hair dyes, jewelry, fingernail polish and deodorants. Other known causes are rubber, nickel and poison ivy,” says Daniel Ferguson, MD, an ophthalmologist who also performs corneal procedures. Brett Rhode, MD, an eye surgeon who also treats infections and allergic reactions, explains, “Contact dermatitis that affects the eyes causes itching, redness and skin scales around the eyes. The most common cause of ocular (eye) contact dermatitis is a reaction to contact lens solutions and eye drops. Discontinuing the drops and applying cold compresses usually results in prompt improvement.” How are eye allergies & contact dermatitis treated? The right treatment or combination of treatments depends on the severity of your symptoms. Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, offers the following options for treatment: If you discover what’s causing your allergy, the best treatment is to avoid it, if possible. When working in the yard, wear gardening gloves and keep your hands away from your eyes. If you are allergic to animals, keep your hands away from your eyes after petting them or, better yet, avoid any contact if at all possible. Buy hypoallergenic cosmetics—especially when selecting mascara and eye shadow. Wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or working with solvents and chemicals. Applying icepacks or cold compresses may reduce itching and puffiness. Using antihistamine eyedrops may provide fast, effective relief once allergies initiate themselves. Mild antihistamine eyedrops can be purchased without a prescription and, depending on the directions, may be able to be used up to four times a day. Some of the more common brands are Vasocon-A or Naphcon. More potent mediallergery>>page 37

MITIGATE SYMPTOMS OF PROJECT PRESSURE While projects, big or small, might seem easy, the truth is many projects turn into far more than you’d expected. This time of year, many people are planning their projects for the coming season. With windows open, frost melting and sunshine creeping back into our lives, motivation is high. While projects, big or small, might seem easy, the truth is many projects turn into far more than you’d expected. Managing those expectations and planning properly can help mitigate symptoms of project pressure.

So here’s your challenge: The spare bedroom needs paint, flooring in the breezeway needs to be updated and you need to replace some drywall in areas of the home, amongst a myriad of other small to-do’s. How do you prioritize what should be done first? Prioritize your projects but know that starting one project might open the door to tackle something lower on your list. For example, if you are looking to replace/repair drywall, it makes sense to address the insulation in that wall. Other things might not be by choice. If you are changing your kitchen cabinets, electrical and plumbing elements might need to be addressed to bring everything up to code. Making sure that everything is done correctly and in order, while addressing any additional components to the project, will make sure your project is successful. Nobody wants to do a job twice, so making sure it’s done right the first time to the best of your or your contractor’s ability is important. THE SCOOP: Scope. Figure out what needs to be done overall, and then put them in order as far as what has to come first because of necessity. What things should I consider or expect before undertaking all this? Have everything on hand before you start. Nobody likes going to the hardware store 3 times in an afternoon (although we’ve all done it). Oftentimes, some products are not available right away or need a fair head start before their use can come to fruition. Make sure you have all of the plumbing pieces for the new faucet you need before you start taking apart the current one. Inspect your tile to make sure none of the pieces broke in shipping and get them replaced before you begin the project. Open and inspect all your products and make sure you understand their proper usage. If not, ask the questions! Also, expect the unexpected. Opening up walls or removing flooring can uncover problems you didn’t know you had. Have some wiggle room in both your budget and your timeline, because as we all know, some (most) projects do not go exactly according to plan. THE SCOOP: Prepare. Make sure your bases are covered before you run head first into a project. Who should I call first when planning something I know I cannot DIY? Make sure you are talking to the correct professional for your project. Not every designer should be making recommendations for moving walls, and not every architect should be making recommendations for the best type of flooring for your needs. Research your people and make sure they feel comfortable doing what you’re asking them to. Having confidence in your professionals can make your project go much more smoothly. If you trust your contractor or designer, leaving some details in their hands can take a load of pressure off of you. THE SCOOP: Make a Call. Contact someone who’s job it is to help with the process, such as a contractor, designer, architect, builder or brother-in-law. I have found labor to be the most expensive part of my project. Any recommendations for success as a do-it-yourselfer? Read the instructions thoroughly. Not only for the installation but also for the preparations and any final steps.Consider hiring someone as a consultant to answer any questions BEFORE you begin. Troubleshooting from the middle of a project is difficult for anyone who has not been directly on the job site regardless of their experience. Know that bringing in a professional to fix or finish what you started may be more expensive than having them do it in the first place. Research and plan for common issues while installing or addressing certain aspects of your project. THE SCOOP: Preparation is the key!!!! Plus, ask the right questions before you’re elbow deep in plaster. What should I do if my project suddenly becomes bigger or more expensive than originally thought? Unfortunately, there is no good answer to this. Hopefully by having all of the materials on hand before you began brought awareness to some of the finer details that may have been missed. At this point you can decide to postpone the actual start of the project until the funds or timing work out, or do the best you can with what you’ve got. If you’ve uncovered a problem you didn’t know you had, it’s time to start from the beginning and reprioritize what needs to happen. Hopefully you left some wiggle room in your budget and timeline. Be patient with yourself, you can only do so much! THE SCOOP: It happens. Breathe, think, and then plan what is possible for the absolutely necessary portions of your project. So maybe some things get slated for next year, maybe with the right motivation, time, and finances, you’ll get everything finished according to your heart’s desire. All in all, the recurring themes here seems to be managing your expectations and planning to the teeth. Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions and crush the development stage of your projects, but remember to be honest with yourself on what is accomplishable and what is not. Rachel Grice Getting in shape and staying healthy don’t have to involve hours in the gym. In fact, just as important as what you do during your workout is what you do the other 23 hours of the day. woman walking down street with colorful background and water bottle Especially if you find yourself sitting at a desk all day or need some motivation to get more active, why not join the LIVESTRONG.COM team for the 10,000 Steps a Day Challenge? We’re kicking things off May 1, 2019, and going through the whole month. Why 10,000 Steps a Day? There’s nothing inherently magical about the number 10,000 in and of itself; it’s more about what it represents. Namely, getting out of your seat and walking around. Originally, though, the number 10,000 came from a Japanese pedometer first marketed in the 1960s, according to UC Davis Integrative Medicine. The devices were called “manpo-kei, which translates to 10,000-step meter. But since that time, science has confirmed some benefits of walking more throughout the day. A 2000 study from the journal Hypertension Research showed that people who took 10,000 steps a day had lower blood pressure. And a 2003 study published in Preventative Medicine found that it improved glucose tolerance. On the other hand, a study from a 2009 issue of the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that people who only walked 5,000 steps were more likely to have poor cardiometabolic health, which can heighten the risk of diabetes, heart disease and/or stroke. And a 2017 study from the International Journal of Obesity found a link between more time spent sedentary and larger waist circumferences and increased risk for coronary heart disease. What Does This Challenge Look Like? The purpose of this challenge is to get you moving! Every day is about being as active as possible, with a goal of walking at least 10,000 steps a day (or more!). You can track this with a fitness tracker you wear on your wrist or through your smartphone. Then check out the LIVESTRONG.COM Challenge Facebook Group for details on weekly challenges. Here’s a sneak peek: Week 1: Walk Just a Little Bit More For week 1 of the 10,000 steps challenge, get a baseline for how much you walk a day, and then challenge yourself to walk just a little bit more. This is a great way to warm up to the challenge. Week 2: Find a Creative Way to Log More Steps During week 2 of the challenge, we’ll give some tips and ideas for walking more during the day and ask you to chime in with your own creative tips. Week 3: Get Your Friends and Co-Workers Involved To celebrate week 3, invite your friends, family member or co-workers to join you! That might mean taking the kids for a walk around the neighborhood, asking your co-worker to take a lunchtime walk with you or setting up your own challenge with your family. Week 4: Amp Up the Step Challenge It’s the last week of the challenge, so let’s see just how active you can be! Try to set a PR for steps in a day. 4 TIPS FOR REDUCING CONFLICT FROM THE INSIDE OUT With reports showing that 80% of Americans agree our country is “mainly” or “totally” divided, it’s no surprise people are craving a clear path away from conflict in their personal lives, their workplaces, and their communities. Fortunately, neuroscience sheds light on why conflict goes hand in hand with the human experience – and what we can do about it. “Human beings have emotions,” says Dr. Josué, “and we act and react in ways that clash with others’ emotions, creating a chain of responses that result in conflict. These so-called maladaptive behaviors make cooperation and collaboration extremely difficult, even in smaller, closer circles.” While there is no easy answer to conflict in society at large, the good news is that we can make a difference if we start small – with ourselves, asserts Dr. Josué. “When we work on our own emotional intelligence in the context of our families and friends, we can reduce conflict on a smaller scale, with a ripple effect on the larger community,” he says. Dr. Josué offers four tips anyone can use to start reducing their experience of conflict: 1. Self-compassion: “Self-compassion teaches us to give ourselves grace for our human failings. When we acknowledge that our imperfections are simply part of who we are, we can walk forward without fear of failure. This self-courage means we won’t hold back from encounters with others that might be difficult or potentially awkward – an important first step in addressing a divisive situation or relationship. It also means we’ll use past failings as a guideline to do differently the next time. Both skills are key to resolving conflict because they change how we conduct relationships.” 2. Empathy: “With empathy, we may not agree with the words, beliefs, or actions of those around us, but we try to understand where they’re coming from and what might have caused them to respond in a particular way. We view their perspective for what it is, without judgment. Then, we are better able to respond in a way that signals our respect and our acknowledgment of their concerns or fears, which is a must if we want to regain trust or maintain a cooperative, low-conflict relationship.” 3. Emotional Intelligence: “Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage our emotions while being aware of how our words and actions affect those we interact with. It defines how we react to one another, which ultimately determines how well we cooperate with others. By learning to respond to situations in a way that honors both our emotions and those of the people around us, we can reduce conflict within ourselves, our families, and our communities.” 4. Critical Thinking: “Sometimes a solution that is best for one person or group isn’t good for another. We have to ask which solution is the most workable within the circumstances – and discern how to communicate that to everyone involved. This requires critical thinking: the ability to look at all sides and make the decision that will provide the greatest benefit and the lowest risk of conflict.” About: Dr. Cholet Kelly Josué received his medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and did his residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Currently Cholet practices medicine in the greater Washington, D.C. area with a functional and integrative approach and draws on his special interest in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry. By Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D. “What is not brought to consciousness comes to us as fate” ~Carl Jung By now everyone has seen the images of flames leaping from the iconic cathedral of Notre Dame. Notre Dame is an extraordinary symbol of the Feminine, dedicated to

the Divine Mother Mary. The Catholic Church commissioned Notre Dame to be built in the 1100s, a cathedral like no other in the heart of France. France is known to be one of the energetic vortexes of Feminine energy in the world. Given the concentration of Feminine energy, we can surmise that Notre Dame (translated ‘Our Lady’) was a container of the Sacred Feminine. And, she caught fire. People around the world were horrified by the images of the cathedral on fire. Both women and men had body reactions to the images on television. Many cried, as though they lost something personal, as firefighters attempted to quell theflames. I was actually in Notre Dame exactly one week before she burned. As I contemplate the timing of my visit there I am certain this was not random. I believe there was a precision and a meaning to my being there in the context of my personal process. As I have been reclaiming and healing my feminine self, my symbolic life has been deeply synchronistic. I cannot help but think of the symbolic meaning behind this burning as many others have. It is time for us to integrate the Feminine into our lives and our relationship with ourselves and others to make our world whole again. We are living in times that require us to undergo deep transformation as well as deep cleansing of old, outworn, adapted patterns. The Power Principle or Patriarchy has been the dominant energy in our world for nearly 5000 years. The Power Principle is defined by domination and ego where intimidation and fear are used to manipulate others to capitulate to its rules. Anyone who behaves in this manner functions from the values of Patriarchy. The Power Principle is not love or or heart-centered. It perpetuates fear and is narcissistic. It is exploitative. Those who adapt to these behaviors and normalize them, unknowingly participate in the perpetuation of this archetype. Our corporations, including our corporate medical system, have been functioning from Patriarchal values. Our broken systems are a testament to how destructive these are. At the heart of the Power Principle lies fear. Fear is never aligned with truth. Large corporations based on the Power Principle have been exploiting the earth and its people to meet their narcissistic and materialistic agendas. As a collective, we have lost a deep part of our Soul, which embodies the qualities of the Feminine Principle. Examples of these qualities are collaboration, process, relatedness, love, feeling, being, balance, healing, non-rational, subconscious, creative, supportive, community oriented, non-material centered values. How many of us live from these patterns? Our corporate models certainly do not support these qualities. symbol>>page 44 MAY 2019 MHL 15

GETTING THE PERFECT SLEEP MATTERS

Sleep is an important part of your daily routine—you spend about one-third of your time doing it. Quality sleep – and getting enough of it at the right times -- is as essential to survival as food and water. Without sleep you can’t form or maintain the pathways in your brain that let you learn and create new memories, and it’s harder to concentrate and respond quickly. Sleep is important to a number of brain functions, including how nerve cells (neurons) communicate with each other. In fact, your brain and body stay remarkably active while you sleep. Recent findings suggest that sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake. Everyone needs sleep, but its biological purpose remains a mystery. Sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body – from the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolism, immune function, mood, and disease resistance. Research shows that a chronic lack of sleep, or getting poor quality sleep, increases the risk of disorders including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity. A recent analysis of national survey data reveals that over 1.6 million American adults use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping* according to scientists at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health. The data came from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2002 the NHIS, an in-person, annual health survey, included over 31,000 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older. A CAM supplement to the survey asked about the use of 27 types of CAM therapies, as well as a variety of medical conditions for which CAM may be used, including insomnia or trouble sleeping. Survey results show that over 17 percent of adults reported trouble sleeping or insomnia in the past 12 months. Of those with insomnia or trouble sleeping, 4.5 percent — more than 1.6 million people — used some form of CAM to treat their condition. “These data offer some new insights regarding the prevalence of insomnia or trouble sleeping in the United States and the types of CAM therapies people use to treat these conditions,” said Dr. Margaret A. Chesney, Acting Director of NCCAM. “They will help us develop new research questions regarding the safety and efficacy of the CAM therapies being used.” Those using CAM to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping were more likely to use biologically based therapies (nearly 65 percent), such as herbal therapies, or mindbody therapies (more than 39 percent), such as relaxation techniques. A majority of people who used herbal or relaxation therapies for their insomnia reported that they were helpful. The two most common reasons people gave for using CAM to treat insomnia were they thought it would be interesting to try (nearly 67 percent) and they thought CAM combined with a conventional treatment would be helpful (nearly 64 percent). In addition to looking at the data on CAM use and insomnia, the researchers also looked at the connection between trouble sleeping and five significant health conditions: diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure, anxiety and depression, and obesity. They found that insomnia or trouble sleeping is highly associated with four of the five conditions: hypertension, congestive heart failure, anxiety and depression, and obesity. Other key points reported in the analysis include:

• Nearly 61 percent reporting trouble sleeping were women versus about 39 percent men. • Insomnia peaks in middle age (45-64 years old) and a second increase appears in people 85 and older. • African Americans and Asians appear less likely to report trouble sleeping or insomnia than whites. • Those with higher education also are less likely to report insomnia or trouble sleeping.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine’s mission is to explore complementary and alternative medical practices in the context of rigorous science, train CAM researchers, and disseminate authoritative information to the public and professionals. For additional information, call NCCAM’s Clearinghouse toll free at 1-888-644-6226, or visit nccam@nih.gov.

YOURE NEVER TOO OLD KEEP ACTIVE AS YOU AGE We’ve all heard that exercise is good for you. Did you know that it’s as true for older people as it is for any age group? You’re never too old to get moving, get stronger and improve your health. Fitting exercise and physical activity into your day can enhance your life in so many ways. Regular physical activity can improve your balance and boost or maintain your strength and fitness. It may also improve your mood and help you manage or lessen the impact of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and depression. Despite these proven benefits, exercise and physical activity rates among older people are surprisingly low. Only about 30% of people ages 45 to 64 say they engage in regular leisure-time physical activity. This falls to 25% of those between the ages of 65 and 74 and 11% of people age 85 and older. Experts recommend 4 types of exercise for older adults: endurance, balance, strength and flexibility. Brisk walking, dancing and other endurance exercises improve the health of your heart, lungs and circulatory system. These exercises can make it easier for you to mow the lawn, climb stairs and do other daily activities. Strength exercises include lifting weights or using resistance bands. They can increase muscle strength to help with activities such as carrying groceries or lifting grandchildren. Balance exercises can help prevent falls—a major health risk for older adults. Stretching, or flexibility exercises, can give you more freedom of movement for bending to tie your shoes or looking over your shoulder as you back out of the driveway. “Even if you haven’t been active previously, it’s important to get started and stay active,” says Dr. Richard J. Hodes, director of NIH’s National Institute on Aging. “We know that people want to live independently for as long as they possibly can. By exercising regularly and including more physical activity in their daily routine, older people can preserve their physical function, which is key to doing the everyday things they want to do.” To help you get started and keep moving, NIH brought together some of the nation’s leading experts on aging, exercise and motivation. They developed a guide to exercise for older adults. The guide serves as the basis for a new national exercise and physical activity campaign for people ages 50 and older. It’s called Go4Life. “Older adults can exercise safely, even those who have physical limitations,” Hodes says. “Go4Life is based on studies showing the benefits of exercise and physical activity for older people, including those with chronic health conditions.” Go4Life exercises are designed to be done safely at home without special equipment or clothing. The free book Exercise & Physical Activity: Your Everyday Guide from the National Institute on Aging is the core resource for the campaign. Other free materials, such as an exercise DVD and tip sheets, are also available. Workout to Go, a mini exercise guide, shows you how you can be active anytime, anywhere. To learn more, visit the Go4Life website. You’ll find exercises, success stories and tips to help you stay motivated. Or call 1-800-222-2225, or e-mail niaic@nia.nih. gov.

NEW AND EMERGING HEARING LOSS TECHNOLOGIES Discover the latest advancements that can make living with hearing loss easier. One of the emerging hearing loss technologies is universal Bluetooth and wireless connectivity.Hearing loss technology has come a long way since the first device emerged in the 1200s. These exciting technological advancements can help make living with hearing loss easier for the more than 48 million people experiencing hearing loss in the United States. Here are six new and emerging hearing loss technologies to watch in 2019 and beyond: 1. Bluetooth and wireless connectivity Wearable technology is an increasingly popular trend in the last few years with the advent of smartwatches and fitness trackers. This same Bluetooth capability is moving to become an industry standard for hearing aids and other assistive devices as well, because of its convenient ability to connect devices together. This connection allows you to turn your hearing aids into a wireless headset to use with your smartphone, TV, or other devices. 2. Music and bone conduction technology Bone conduction is a hearing loss technology that allows you to “hear” sound through the vibration of the jaw and cheek bones of your face. This method makes the sound waves bypass your eardrum and directly stimulate the inner ear. For people who experience hearing loss but retain function in their cochlea, bone conduction headphones provide a way to experience music. Although the quality of sound is less than traditional air conduction headphones, this technology continues to improve and provide a hearing loss-friendly option for music aficionados. Get in tune with these famous musicians who experienced hearing loss throughout history. 3. Speech-to-text apps Real-time communication is now easier with various speech-to-text apps. This hearing loss technology converts spoken conversations into text in real-time and is useful for live events such as presentations and conferences, where the text is projected onto a large screen. There are also several that include speech-to-text and other functionality. 4. Hearing aid advancements Hearing aids and other wearable devices are becoming smaller and sleeker, with additional features added every year. A large variety of styles allow for customization and personalization, while features such as ear-to-ear connectivity, noise reduction software, and directional microphones make devices more effective and easier to use. 5. Captioned telephones CapTel captioned telephones show captions of everything a caller says over the phone, giving people with hearing loss the confidence to know they’ll “catch” every word of the conversation. There are several models to choose from, including touch screen technology, traditional telephone styles, or large display options for people who require extra-large font sizes. With options like built in Bluetooth connectivity, a speakerphone, an answering machine that captions your messages, and customizable sound frequency screening, people with hearing loss can enjoy talking on the phone again. Discover how to choose the right captioned telephone for you here. 6. AI assistants Some companies are developing artificial intelligence (AI) assistants to help predict the best fit for a hearing aid or cochlear implant. This technology in the audiologist’s office could shorten the detection and diagnosis process and ease the experience of getting an assistive listening device. The ways in which technological advancements can improve audiology is exciting to consider and may be one of the most compelling areas for growth in the years to come. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARDENING

Gardening may simply seem like a leisurely activity that allows you to enjoy fresh summer salads but there are actually many health benefits to planting and maintaining a garden. From the physical exercise it entails to the relaxation of tending to your plants and the healthy diet it promotes, there are plenty of reasons that it’s beneficial for you to spend some time in a garden this summer: The physical benefits Remember the last time you spent an afternoon in the garden and woke up the next morning with sore legs? While you may have taken it as an indicator that you could use a little more exercise, your legs were probably actually sore because you gave them a workout! From bending to reaching, gardening causes you to stretch your body in many ways that you wouldn’t normally move it. According to Health, since gardening is a form of low-impact exercise, it’s especially beneficial for seniors or people with chronic pain. It’s also a good way to get your blood pumping if you don’t already have a regular ongoing fitness routine. Since gardening has more of a purpose than just giving you a reason to exercise, it’s possible you’ll find more enjoyment out of it and stick with it. Getting ample exercise not only keeps your body limber, but it also reduces your risk for cardiovascular health problems like heart attack and stroke.

The repetitive small movements you make in the garden, whether you’re trimming leaves or pulling weeds, are also good for people with limited dexterity in their hands. These muscle movements keep your hands strong and agile. If you find that you have difficulty performing the movements needed to garden, consider ergonomic gardening tools. Gardening will keep you supplied with produce all summer.Gardening will keep you supplied with produce all summer. The mental benefits The physical benefits aren’t the only important advantages of gardening. In order to be wholly healthy, you need to take your mental well-being into account as well. Gardening has been proven to effectively relieve stress. According to the National Gardening Association, a British study found that people between the ages of 50 and 88 who gardened reported less stress than seniors who had similar social support, but didn’t have a gardening hobby. This may be due to the “contribution of engagement with nature and psychological restoration.” Caring for a garden has also been shown help alleviate depression symptoms. A 2013 report from Gardener’s World made up of interviews and polls found that people who spent time in a garden were more likely to report being happy with their lives. Even if it can’t be proven that other factors in these people’s lives impacted their level of satisfaction, it is safe to assume that people who garden are at least enjoying themselves while they do it. “There’s no need to run to the store for ingredients for your salad.” The nutritional benefits Whether you’re growing tomatoes, cucumbers or a patch of pumpkins, gardening gives you the excuse to supplement your diet with plenty of nutritious vegetables. It’s not necessary to run to the grocery store to get ingredients for your salad when you can just walk to the backyard to get what you need. Since you nurse those veggies from seeds to maturity, you can control the amount of pesticides and other extra “stuff” that’s used on them. Another benefit of working in a garden is the vitamin D exposure from the sun that comes with it. This vitamin helps the body absorb calcium, promoting bone and immune system health. Vitamin D deficiencies are incredibly common, especially since we take such precaution to protect ourselves from the sun in order to prevent skin cancer. Our bodies need a little bit of sun, though, so that time spent in the garden will give you a healthy dose of sunlight – just don’t stay out too long! If your home is not suited for gardening, there may be a community garden in your area. Or, consider creating an indoor herb garden. These simple potted plants provide a pleasant aroma and can add a little fresh spice to your meals.

DOES INTENSIVE BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL REDUCE DEMENTIA? Intensive lowering of blood pressure did not significantly reduce dementia risk but did have a measurable impact on mild cognitive impairment (MCI), according to the final, peer-reviewed results from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) Memory and Cognition in Decreased Hypertension (SPRINT MIND). SPRINT MIND secondary results are the first to show an intervention that significantly reduces the occurrence of MCI, which is a well-established precursor of dementia. The results were reported Jan. 28, 2019 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. SPRINT MIND was an integral aspect of the initial design for SPRINT, a large, randomized clinical trial of intensive blood pressure lowering on cardiovascular and renal disease; both were funded by the National Institutes of Health. “Dementia continues to be a large public health challenge, and based on the primary results of this study, we still have yet to find an intervention strategy proven to reduce the risk of dementia, said Richard J. Hodes, M.D., director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of NIH and the lead institute on Alzheimer’s research. “Nevertheless, the secondary results showing that intensive lowering of blood pressure may reduce risk for MCI, a known risk factor for dementia, gives us additional avenues to explore on the path to prevention. MCI is a condition in which people have more difficulty with cognition, thinking, remembering, and reasoning, than normal for people their age. Dementia is a more severe form of loss in cognitive functions that interferes with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is very common in persons over the age of 50 and a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and a growing body of research suggests that it may increase risk for dementia later in life. The participants in SPRINT were adults 50 years and older at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Results of the SPRINT trial, which ended early, showed that intensive blood pressure control, i.e., a systolic blood pressure target of less than 120 mmHg (<120 mmHg), compared to a standard target of less than 140 mmHg (<140 mmHg), reduced cardiovascular events and overall mortality. Between November 2010 and March 2013 more than 9,300 participants were randomized to the two target groups with nearly 4,700 in each group. In August 2015, the SPRINT trial was stopped after 3.3 years of treatment when the major beneficial effects of intensive blood pressure management on mortality and cardiovascular disease were discovered. Assessment for development of dementia and MCI continued for the full planned five years. SPRINT MIND aimed to address whether intensive blood pressure control would also reduce the risk of developing dementia and cognitive impairment over the ensuing five years. Cognitive assessments were given to participants who had high blood pressure but no history of stroke or diabetes at the start of the trial, and over 91 percent had at least one follow up. Participants were classified into one of three categories: no cognitive impairment, MCI, or probable dementia. Man gets blood pressure taken by nurseSPRINT participant getting blood pressure measured. Photo credit: Wake Forest School of Medicine. The SPRINT MIND Research Group, including corresponding author Jeff D. Williamson, M.D., M.H.S., from Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, noted that the primary results of this analysis found no statistically significant difference between standard and intensive treatment in the proportion of participants that were diagnosed with dementia. The study, however, had fewer cases of dementia than expected. Nevertheless, the secondary results suggested that the intensive treatment reduced the risk of MCI and the combined risk of MCI and dementia. Due to the success of the SPRINT trial on the cardiovascular outcomes, the study intervention was stopped early; as a result, participants were treated for a shorter period than originally planned. The authors concluded that the shorter time and the unexpected fewer cases of dementia may have made it difficult to determine the role of intensive blood pressure control on dementia.

SUMMER MOVING A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW TO HELP GET READY Summer is here and you’ve decided your home may be too large, too costly to maintain, too difficult to maintain, too unsafe without expensive safety features to meet your needs, too far from transportation, or too far away from shopping centers and medical offices. Your home has become an inconvenience and now you’ve decided to buy or rent a smaller home or apartment. It’s a good time to make your next move. Now that the weather has become warmer it makes it easier to get around searching for your next residence. It’s a challenge to make the move to a new place after all the years you’ve spent creating and taking care of your current home. If you own your home and plan to sell you might want talk to your realtor about a Competitive Market Analysis so you can estimate a selling price. If you are renting and you need some advice on your move you can always find a moving coordinator to help you make the transition. Of course, many people simply choose to rely on family and trusted friends to help them make a move. You’ve spent your life helping them out, now it’s their turn to help you. We’ve put together some moving tips that should make your move easier. Seems pretty simple, but consider many things. Would you like to be close to family, friends, shopping centers, healthcare facilities? Will you need to use transportation other than your car? Will you have access to recreational activities? Do you want to climb flights of stairs? Do you want maintenance-free living? Is it secure and safe? Do you need assistance with daily activities? Can you keep your pet? Research new home alternatives long before you make your move. Spend time in the area where you plan to move and get answers to all your questions. Whether you are moving to a smaller home, apartment, or senior residence you need to downsize your possessions. Sort through your belongings and keep what you absolutely need. Go to the least used rooms and areas first. Sort only a few hours at a time to avoid being overwhelmed. At this time you should create a floor plan of your new living space showing each room and the placement of each piece of furniture. Take measurements of each room. Make a note of doors, windows, outlets. Take measurements of your furniture. Give the remaining items to family and/or friends. Think about having an estate sale, a tag sale or donating belongings to charities (many charities will pick up the items at your home). Keep in mind space limitations. Let family members know what you plan on taking with you. Make a schedule of the times when you expect to have family members, friends, or charities pick up the items. Clearly label all items, use colored stickers to mark what will or will not go to your new home. This will help you remember what goes where when you begin packing. If you plan on selling your home it’s time to make minor repairs and note major repairs which you should report to your realtor. Small repairs make the home look well cared for and usually cost little time and money. These details make a difference in how the buyer views the home. Itemize cosmetic changes such as fresh paint or new carpets. The home looks ready to move into. Be sure to keep up the exterior maintenance of your home. Remove interior clutter. All of these tips create a favorable impression on a buyer. Renters make sure your apartment is clean and contact your apartment manager to discuss what time your apartment will be shown. Contact your utility companies and let them know what day you plan to move. Fill out change of address forms for the post office seven to ten days before moving day. Make sure you have phone service at your current home and new home on moving day. Have the name of the contact of your new apartment or senior residence ahead of time. Know the name of the person you need to contact if a situation comes up on moving day.

STAYING ACTIVE DURING VACATION

Vacation is a meant to help you relax. It’s a time to enjoy the company of friends or family. However, when you go those days without getting in your regular exercise, not only will it be difficult to get back into the swing of things when you return from vacation, but you may also find that you feel sluggish. Here are some ways for you get moving when you’re on vacation, without having to use the hotel gym. Sightsee You’ll probably be spending plenty of time sightseeing on vacation, so why not factor that into your exercise for the week? Whether you’re moseying around a foreign town square or hiking through a state park, walking can do plenty when it comes to getting your heart rate up. If you feel like your leisurely pace isn’t enough to get your blood pumping, simply up the ante and go for a speed walk after your meals, especially if you indulge in local cuisine. Rather than hailing cabs or driving to each destination, take a walk there if it’s under a mile away. It’s beneficial to look into restaurants and hotel locations before booking your trip so you can find a location that’s easily walkable. Be sure to pack your comfy shoes! Take an adventure Walking isn’t the only way to get around when you’re on vacation. Work some exercise into your tourist activities. If you’re near a body of water, rent a kayak and go on an adventure. If you are staying in a hotel, chances are, it has a pool. Try swimming laps when the pool is empty or when it isn’t too crowded. If you’re staying somewhere with a trail, rent a bike and sightsee that way. All of these activities are low impact, meaning they work your muscles without tiring out your joints. This is a great way to ensure you get your exercise but don’t end up too sore to enjoy the next day! If you’re feeling particularly daring, try paddle boarding or even take a surfing lesson if you’re staying in a beach town. Walk the course when you go golfing this summer.Walk the course when you go golfing this summer. Nix the golf cart Many people enjoy going golfing on their summer vacations. This activity is perfect for people who want to relax, but also have a bit of a competitive streak. Rather than hiring a caddy and cruising around in a golf cart, carry your clubs and walk instead. If you don’t want to risk injuring yourself by carting your clubs around, check to see if there are rolling carts available to rent. You’ll still get the exercise without the possible injury. Not only will this add some physical activity to the mix, but you’ll also save some money! Check with your doctor before you leave to see what activities are right for you.

An estimated one out of five people aged 75 to 84 has Alzheimers disease. Among those aged85 or older, its two out of five. By Bonnie Liebman Can’t remember that new neighbor’s name? Not sure why you came into a room or what you planned to say? Can’t find your keys? Odds are, those are normal signs of aging. But when you leave your wristwatch in the refrigerator, can’t remember common words like “toothbrush,” can’t find your way home, or can’t remember how to use a key—those are more likely to signal Alzheimer’s or other kinds of dementia. An estimated one out of five people aged 75 to 84 has Alzheimer’s disease. Among those aged 85 or older, it’s two out of five. While some risk factors, like Alzheimer’s-prone genes, can’t be changed, dementia may not be inevitable. Whether you eat a healthy diet, keep moving, and use your brain may make a difference. “For so long, Alzheimer’s disease was considered an inevitable consequence of aging,” says researcher Martha Clare Morris of the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging in Chicago. “In the last 10 to 15 years, it’s started to look more like heart disease,” she explains. “Heart disease research has given us many tools to lower risk—diet, exercise, weight, cholesterol, blood pressure. Alzheimer’s may also have multiple risk factors.” In fact, Alzheimer’s may have some of the same risk factors as heart disease. Researchers now believe that only a blurry line separates Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia—which occurs when blood vessels that feed the brain become narrowed or clogged, either slowly or after a stroke. One difference between heart disease and dementia: “Heart disease research is 30 years ahead,” says Morris. Why do some brains stay sharp while others get fuzzy as they age? To find out, researchers are looking not just at who ends up with a diagnosis of dementia. They’re also looking at people who don’t have dementia, but whose scores on memory tests decline after a few years. For example, in the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), which has been tracking roughly 3,700 older people since the mid-1990s, the participants take cognitive tests every three years. Among them, “subjects are read a story and asked to repeat the main theses to test their immediate memory, and again 15 minutes later to test delayed memory,” says researcher Martha Clare Morris. Another example: In the timed digit-recall test, “we pair symbols with numbers,” she explains. “Then we present a series of symbols to see how fast participants can name the corresponding numbers.” When a person’s scores on those kinds of tests drop significantly over time, it’s called “cognitive decline.” Here’s a sampling of steps you can take to keep your brain in shaped over the next five or ten years. Since much of the brain research is in its infancy, we include only advice that—even if it doesn’t help your mind—should lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, or other illness.

Shoot for two or three servings of fatty fish each week. The polyunsaturated omega-3 fish oil—DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)—seem to protect the heart. And there’s growing evidence that they may also protect the brain. “EPA is anti-inflammatory, and inflammation is part the Alzheimer’s disease syndrome,” says William Connor, a heart disease expert at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. But the evidence for DHA is even more compelling. It’s the most prominent fat in the brain, especially in the nerve cells in the cerebral cortex. “People with Alzheimer’s have less DHA in their cerebral phospholipid cell membranes than normal people,” explains Connor. “Taking DHA could replace the missing DHA.” When researchers feed DHA to adult monkeys who have been on DHA-deficient diets, the DHA gets into their brain phospholipids. “The DHA crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the brain,” explains Connor. “We think there’s wear and tear on polyunsaturated fats in the brain all the time, and that they’re constantly getting replaced.” So far, only a handful of studies have tried to see if fish or omega-3 fats are linked to cognitive decline. But they’re promising: In the Framingham Heart Study, which tracked nearly 900 healthy older men and women living in the Boston suburb for roughly nine years, people with the highest blood levels of DHA—they ate about three servings of fish per week—had about half the risk of dementia compared to those with lower levels. In the Zutphen Elderly Study in the Netherlands, which followed 210 older men for an average of five years, those who ate no fish had more cognitive decline than fish eaters. In the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study of more than 2,200 older residents of the Minneapolis suburbs, scores on a verbal fluency test (“write as many words as you can in one minute that start with F, A, or S”) were less likely to decline in those who had higher blood levels of omega-3 fats. Omega-3s only appeared to protect people who had high blood pressure or a combination of low HDL (“good”) cholesterol and high triglycerides. In the Chicago Health and Aging Project, cognitive decline was 10% slower among people who ate fish at least once a week than among those who ate fish less often. “The preponderance of studies shows an association between fish consumption or DHA and cognitive decline,” says Connor. “But it’s only an association, so it may be time for a more definitive clinical trial.”

Until then, he recommends omega-3s, but not necessarily for the brain. “My advice is to consume fish to prevent heart disease,” says Connor. “There’s no harm, and it might also prevent Alzheimer’s.” Shoot for two or three servings of fish per week. To get the amount of omega-3s that seemed to protect the Dutch men, you’d have to eat five ounces a week of fatty fish (like salmon) or 30 ounces a week of leaner fish (like cod, haddock, or tuna). If you don’t eat fish, taking fish oil capsules or vegetarian omega-3s from phytoplankton is second best, says Connor. Limit bad fats. It’s clear that saturated and trans fats are bad for your arteries. Could they also harm your brain? The Chicago Health and Aging Project study tracked 815 healthy people for nearly four years, and then searched for clues about the 131 who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. “We saw a doubling of the risk of Alzheimer’s disease among those who ate the most saturated fat versus those who ate the least,” says CHAP researcher Martha Clare Morris. (Those who ate the most sat fat averaged 25 grams a day, while those who ate the least averaged half that much.) The risk was also roughly double among those who ate more than about 1.8 grams of trans fat a day (the amount eaten by the group with the lowest trans intake). In a second study, which tracked more than 2,500 people for six years, “we found a faster rate of cognitive decline in people who consumed the most saturated and trans fat,” adds Morris. And in April, the ARIC study reported significantly more cognitive decline in people with higher blood levels of palmitic acid, which is found in saturated fats. It’s not clear how bad fats might affect Alzheimer’s risk, but there’s reason to suspect a link. “The only gene that’s been linked to late-life Alzheimer’s is apoEe4, which encodes a cholesterol-transport gene,” notes Morris. “And cholesterol-lowering statin drugs seem to protect against Alzheimer’s in some studies.” Eat leafy greens. Kale, iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, and raw or cooked spinach. That’s the group of “leafy greens” that could keep you thinking straight. and other cognitive skills by phone to 13,000 nurses twice between 1995 and 2001, those who reported eating the most vegetables had a slower cognitive decline than those who ate the least. “But the relationship was strongest with green, leafy vegetables,” says Francine Grodstein of the Harvard School of Public Health, who adds that the researchers “found nothing with fruits.” Results from the CHAP study are similar. People who averaged roughly three servings a day of vegetables had a 40% slower rate of cognitive decline than those who ate roughly one serving a day. Again, fruits had no impact. Yet blueberry extracts can improve memory in aging rats, according to studies by researchers at Tufts University in Boston. And in rats whose genes produce the beta-amyloid-rich plaques found in Alzheimer’s patients, blueberry supplements make the rats perform better in maze tests, even though they still get plaques. “We don’t have any data from human studies that berries slow cognitive decline,” notes Morris. But that doesn’t mean the animal studies are wrong. “They gave the animals potent berry extracts daily, while berry consumption is pretty low and infrequent in our studies,” says Morris. So if berries offer protection, it might not show up in a study like hers.

Look for vitamin-E-rich foods.

In theory, antioxidants like vitamin E were supposed to keep our brains running smoothly. The Women’s Health Study tested cognitive decline in nearly 6,000 healthy women aged 65 or older who were given either a placebo or 600 IU (International Units) of vitamin E every other day. After 10 years, says Grodstein, “we found no difference between the two groups. Neither did AREDs.” That’s the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, which tested high doses of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc on the risk of macular degeneration in more than 2,000 older people for seven years. “The literature is fairly consistent that vitamin supplements don’t have cognitive benefits,” Grodstein concludes. But Morris hasn’t given up on vitamin E from foods. “We found a lower risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease in people who consumed more vitamin E from food,” she says. ENCOUNTERING THE HEART AND SOUL OF AGING THROUGH SPIRITUALITY

By Clement Manor Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the renowned French philosopher, is often remembered for his view of spirituality. He claimed we’re not human beings having a spiritual experience – we’re spiritual beings having a human experience. Aging, a natural stage of the human experience, heightens spirituality in ways that can increase understanding and well-being even amid illness and physical decline. While many people express their spirituality through religious practices and participation in a faith community, spirituality is a broader concept with room for many perspectives. According to Alice Hatzenbeller, pastoral care director at Clement Manor in Greenfield, WI, spirituality includes a sense of connection to something bigger than yourself and is typically centered on the deepest values and meanings by which you live. “The bare essentials of who you really are come forward during aging,” said Alice. “People recognize that yes, I can still connect with something greater than myself even if my physical being changes.” Spiritual dimensions That spiritual component has been found to have a positive impact on the aging process. A study of almost 4,000 seniors by Duke University researchers showed a significant connection between longevity and spiritual activities. Additional research supports that spirituality has been linked to positive health outcomes. Tapping into spirituality improves coping with a range of losses that come with aging. These may healthwise include the death of a spouse, moving out 1of a lifelong home, final 1/2 pg bridgeway ad_Layout 1 3/23/12 11:18 AM Page

changes in independence, illness, physical limitations and declining mental acuity. Spirituality can provide context for meaning and foster acceptance with these kinds of aging related challenges. Spirituality also provides unique opportunities for deepening relationships. Life review is common during the aging process and often this includes thoughtful reflection on family relationships. It may also include forgiveness, reconciliation and making amends which provides new levels of comfort and peace. The spiritual path While not typically considered religious, staying connected with family, friends and neighbors, giving and receiving love and support, and having opportunities to help others are key facets of spirituality that all humans experience. The individual spiritual journey incorporates personal values and activities that bring enjoyment and understanding. Reading books and engaging in conversations about the meaning of life, mindfulness and paying attention to emotions, and striving to live ethically are examples of sacred activities that continue during aging. Enjoying nature, engaging in creative activities, being playful and enjoying humor, and appreciating performing and visual arts are additional ways spiritual growth continues. Spirituality and senior care -- what to look for With so many available options in senior living, selecting one that’s the best fit takes time to evaluate and balance needs, wants and the facility’s offerings. Given the important link between spirituality and aging, spirituality resources and services should be on the check list. A few questions to consider when assessing a facility’s capabilities in providing spirituality include inquiring about how spirituality is woven into other services and programs. Understanding how spiritual or pastoral care is offered at the facility, including a description of designated staff available to provide individual spiritual support is also helpful. Finding out if this support is available to family members is also important. Since for many people spirituality and religious faiths are linked, looking for traditional activities like Chapel services, prayer gatherings, and staff trained in pastoral care and religious ministry can be an advantage. While most senior care facilities have counseling available through a social worker, a theology degree or specialized training in a variety of faith traditions can offer deeper perspective to someone who is searching for meaning during the stages of aging. Clement Manor has both full-time and part-time staff available for residents, family members and employees who are often on the front lines of providing spiritual support. “We all have mind, body and soul connections,” said Alice. “Spiritual care providers who are open to where individuals are in their aging process, and how they express their spirituality, are able to care for the whole person throughout the journey.”

And even if fluids might help, it’s not clear that you need eight glasses a day. Some studies found a lower risk of bladder cancer in men who drank only about six glasses a day. But other studies found no benefit. As a physician, I certainly would not advise someone who has had kidney stones to dehydrate themselves. But nor do I advise them to drink volumes and volumes of liquid. Q: Can drinking water help people lose weight? A: Certainly if you fill your stomach with water, satiety may be reached earlier. But it is not scientifically proven that drinking a lot of water helps dieting. Barbara Rolls of Pennsylvania State University found that it might help if water is incorporated in the food—if you turned a casserole into a soup, for example—but not if you just drink a glass of water. Q: Can water help prevent constipation? A: There is no conclusive scientific evidence that it helps constipation. There is no good evidence that the water that one drinks is excreted with the stool rather than absorbed from the gut. But I would not be dogmatic about that. Some people have said to me, “Dr. Valtin, when I drink a lot I feel better, my migraine headaches are less, my bowel movements are better,â€? and so on. If water works for you, by all means keep it up, provided you realize that even plain water is potentially harmful. Q: How? A: Too much can cause water intoxication. I SCREEN, YOU SCREEN, WE ALL SCREEN FOR BLOOD CONTROL Men and women are about equally likely to develop high blood pressure over their lifetimes, but their risks vary at different ages. Sometimes high blood pressure seems so commonplace – one out of three U.S. adults have it – that taking care of it can fall pretty far down the list of priorities: somewhere after your flu shot but before your second annual dental check up. This is unfortunate because not only is having your blood pressure checked both easy and painless, but it can go a long way toward helping you head off problems before they get more serious. Failure to control blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke and other potentially fatal events. In fact, according to the CDC, more than 360,000 American deaths in 2010 included high blood pressure as a primary or contributing cause. That’s 1,000 deaths each day. Men and women are about equally likely to develop high blood pressure over their lifetimes, but their risks vary at different ages. The condition affects more men than women before 64 years of age. For people aged 65 years or older, more women than men have high blood pressure. So what exactly should we be looking for? Blood pressure has two numbers, systolic and diastolic, and is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Systolic pressure (the top number) is the force on the blood vessel walls when the heart beats and pumps blood out of the heart. Diastolic pressure (the bottom number) is the force that occurs when the heart relaxes in between beats. This is how it breaks down by the numbers: Normal: less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic Prehypertension: between 120 and 139 systolic and 80–89 diastolic Hypertension: 140 or greater systolic, 90 or greater diastolic At Home Instead Senior Care of Milwaukee, we’re firm believers that an ounce of hypertension prevention is worth a pound of cure, that’s why we think it’s important to try to head off high blood pressure before it begins. Here are some of the things that anyone can do at any age to help prevent high blood pressure: • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. • Participate in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. • Eat a healthy diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium, saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol. • Manage stress. • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink (no more than one drink each day for women and two for men). For more information about the well-being of seniors, or to inquire about a trained CAREGiver to help your senior with healthy meal preparation, transportation to medical appointments and other things to support their good health, please contact us at 414-882-5464.

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING Assisted living facilities offer a housing alternatives for older adults who may need help with dressing, bathing, eating, and toileting, but do not require the intensive medical and nursing care provided in nursing homes. Assisted living facilities may be part of a retirement community, nursing home, senior housing complex, or may stand-alone. Licensing requirements for assisted living facilities vary by state and can be known by as many as 26 different names including: residential care, board and care, congregate care, and personal care. WHAT SERVICES ARE PROVIDED? Residents of assisted living facilities usually have their own units or apartment. In addition to having a support staff and providing meals, most assisted living facilities also offer at least some of the following services: • Health care management and monitoring • Help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and eating • Housekeeping and laundry • Medication reminders and/or help with medications • Recreational activities • Security • Transportation HOW TO CHOOSE A FACILITY? A good match between a facility and a resident’s needs depends as much on the

42 MHL MAY 2019

philosophy and services of the assisted living facility as it does on the quality of care. The following suggestions can help you get started in your search for a safe, comfortable and appropriate assisted living facility: • Think ahead. What will the resident's future needs be and how will the facility meet those needs? • Is the facility close to family and friends? Are there any shopping centers or other businesses nearby (within walking distance)? • Do admission and retention policies exclude people with severe cognitive impairments or severe physical disabilities? • Does the facility provide a written statement of the philosophy of care? • Visit each facility more than once, sometimes unannounced. • Visit at meal times, sample the food, and observe the quality of mealtime and the service. • Observe interactions among residents and staff. • Check to see if the facility offers social, recreational, and spiritual activities? • Talk to residents. • Learn what types of training staff receive and how frequently they receive training. • Review state licensing reports. The following steps should also be considered: • Contact your state’s long-term care ombudsman to see if any complaints have recently been filed against the assisted living facility you are interested in. In many states, the ombudsman checks on conditions at assisted living units as well as nursing homes. WHAT IS THE COST FOR ASSISTED LIVING? Although assisted living costs less than nursing home care, it is still fairly expensive. Depending on the kind of assisted living facility and type of services an older person chooses, the price costs can range from less than $10,000 a year to more than $50,000 a year. Across the U.S., monthly rates average $1,800 per month. Because there can be extra fees for additional services, it is very important for older persons to find out what is included in the basic rate and how much other services will cost. Primarily, older persons or their families pay the cost of assisted living. Some health and long term care insurance policies may cover some of the costs associated with assisted living. In addition, some residences have their own financial assistance programs.

Examples of these qualities are collaboration, process, relatedness, love, feeling, being, balance, healing, non-rational, subconscious, creative, supportive, community oriented, non-material centered values. How many of us live from these patterns? Our corporate models certainly do not support these qualities. We are conditioned to sacrifice these in favor of progress and materialism and an exploitative and narcissistic approach to life is thus normalized. In fact we are rewarded for behaving this way. Many call the impact of these compromises, “moral injury”. Our collective has accepted moral injury as the price we must pay for progress and for ‘getting ahead’ and for survival. As a society, we have sacrificed the qualities of the Feminine Principle for personal gain. Individually, the damage caused by these compromises manifests in our bodies and our lives in addictive behaviors, heart disease, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and even cancer. One of the gravest symptoms caused by this way of behaving is a loss of meaning. In fact, this is the core etiology beneath most of our illnesses today. We cannot ignore the fact that the wood that formed the scaffolding and pews in Notre Dame was obtained during the height of the Inquisition, during the 1100s a time when the Feminine values such as healing and soul alignment were under attack, and millions of women and men were burned at the stake. It is a compelling thought to wonder if there is a message here about what has to be burned away and cleansed. What needs to be transformed and reclaimed? The spire toppling can also be viewed symbolically as the fall of the Power Principle. It is certainly food for thought. When viewed from this context, I feel an urgency for all of us to return to wholeness and healing. As a society, we are guilty for having normalized the desire for power at all costs. We need a course correction to become whole. When we ignore the urgency to become whole, we invoke catalysts to awaken us so we can heal and rebalance our way of being with the qualities of the Feminine Principle. I would suggest that the burning of the cathedral of Notre Dame is one such catalyst. When a symbol of this magnitude catches fire, I would suggest that it is a call from ‘Our Lady’, the Feminine Principle, to return to what is of integrity, wholeness, and truth. It is time to return to the Feminine values listed above, a clarion call for Soul retrieval. The Divine Mother has appeared hundreds of times around the world for the past many centuries. A well- known example is in Lourdes, France.(1) Many state She has offered the same message in all appearances, ‘live from peace and love’. Living this message is very hard work as it requires us to sacrifice our adaptions to the Power Principle and follow our deepest instincts for self-alignment and truth. This requires a release of our adaptations and a reorganization of the platform we live from. I believe this is not a sentimental or superficial message for peace and love, but one that requires a collective reevaluation of the values we are currently living from. This will require us to integrate the qualities of the Feminine Principle, so we no longer suffer moral injury and have the courage to conscientiously object to our adaptions to the Power Principle. When we behave in these ways to reclaim ourselves, we will be one step closer to living from peace and healthy love and reclaiming the Soul of the world. As the rabbinic teachings of Tikkun Olam teach us, our daily acts of kindness behavedfrom the above mentioned qualities can actually repair our collective Soul which has been injured by our adaptive behaviors over time. If we heed the powerful symbolic meaning of ‘Our Lady’ burning, we can invoke a more meaningful and conscious way of behaving, which I believe would be a powerful process of rebuilding our collective consciousness to form a new and meaningful platform for living alongside the actual brick and mortar used to rebuild the body of the cathedral. As I reclaim my own alignment with the Feminine Principle and reflect on the timing of my presence in Notre Dame before she burned, I am inspired to continue the difficult yet necessary process of reframing and reclaiming the Sacred Feminine in my life and work, to be a role model and to ‘hold the line’ for healthy and authentic relatedness. It is the deepest and most sacred place I can live from. I invite you to join me and together, it will be possible to repair the Soul of the world. INDEPENDENT LIVING FOR SENIORS: the affordable solution There are a number of issues to consider when looking into changing your address. In most cases, for seniors, it comes down to 3 main issues: Money – will I have enough, Health – what if I need help, Lifestyle – I want to be happy. For this issue let’s explore the affordability of a senior living option that most people shy away from, the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), which offers a positive outcome for these concerns. A Continuing Care Retirement Community is one of the options you should investigate. The affordability of a CCRC is sometimes not explored because the possibility of a deposit (also known as an accommodation fee) stops people in their tracks. That deposit, whether refundable or a Life Care option, provides the opportunity to leave your children a larger inheritance than you ever thought possible. At the same time, it gives you the financial and healthcare security you are looking for. It is a real asset protection plan for life. As a general definition, a Life Care Community promises its residents “care for life”. The life care deposit covers the lifetime use of the residence and all common areas as well as unlimited use of the assisted living and skilled nursing services. Life Care removes future financial worries about health care needs by including priority access to assisted and nursing care at little to no increase in monthly service fees. The deposit can be refundable depending on the financial option that makes the most sense for you. Life on a CCRC campus can be much like resort style living. The amenities that are included offer numerous educational, recreational and entertaining options. Golf courses, fine dining restaurants, casual bistros, theaters, fitness centers with pools and whirlpools are all part of the CCRC lifestyle at no additional cost. Senior communities are not all the same. Learn all you can, ask questions and take a personal tour to get the information directly from the senior living community you are interested in. If you are considering a change of address be sure to investigate the options and opportunities a Continuing Care Retirement Community offers. Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, is a surgical procedure used to treat a variety of disabling disorders. It is most commonly used to treat the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation uses an electrode surgically implanted into part of the brain. The electrodes are connected by a wire under the skin to a small electrical device called a pulse generator that is implanted in the chest. The pulse generator and electrodes painlessly stimulate the brain in a way that helps to stop many of the symptoms of Parkinson’s such as tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity. DBS is primarily used to stimulate one of three brain regions: the subthalamic nucleus, the globus pallidus, or the thalamus. Researchers are exploring optimal generator settings for DBS, whether DBS of other brain regions will also improve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, and also whether DBS may slow disease progression. Deep brain stimulation usually reduces the need for levodopa and related drugs, which in turn decreases dyskinesias and other side effects. It also helps to relieve “on-off” fluctuation of symptoms. People who respond well to treatment with levodopa tend to respond well to DBS. Unfortunately, older people who have only a partial response to levodopa may not improve with DBS.

Complementary and Supportive Therapies

A wide variety of complementary and supportive therapies may be used for Parkinson’s disease. Among these therapies are standard physical, occupational, and speech therapies, which help with gait and voice disorders, tremors and rigidity, and decline in mental functions. Other supportive therapies include diet and exercise. Yoga involves stretching the body, this factor may help people with Parkinson’s improve their mobility and range of motion. Some yoga classes that are designed for students with special needs, such as those with Parkinson’s disease, incorporate balance training and gentle yoga poses, including back strengthening postures, shoulder movements and meditation. Yoga also stresses the importance of proper breathing techniques into its movements to enhance lung function. The practice of yoga can improve muscle strength and increase mobility. Doctors sometimes recommend physical therapy that includes muscle strengthening exercises to get neglected muscles moving. The various body poses that are performed in yoga will not stop the progression of Parkinson’s disease from progressing, but it can lessen its symptoms and enhance both physical and mental strength. Yoga can have an uplifting emotional impact on people with Parkinson’s. It is recommended that people talk to their doctor before starting a yoga practice or any other exercise routine.
