DISCOVERING A NEW SUPPORT GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON'S DISEASE

Billie Lindo discovered Rock Steady Boxing at HealthWorks Fitness Center in May 2024 after seeing an article in an Arkansas magazine and later noticing a brochure at her Tai Chi class in Magnolia. Living with Parkinson's disease, she was immediately drawn to the program when she learned it was both a fitness class and a local support group designed specifically for people facing the same diagnosis. Even though she did not have her own transportation at the time, Billie was determined to participate. With the help of insurance covered transportation, she made the trip to El Dorado and began her journey with Rock Steady Boxing.

An introduction to Rock Steady Boxing at HealthWorks When she observed her first class at Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), Billie was immediately struck by the dedication and determination of the participants. "I was amazed at how hard the people in the class were working to fight back against Parkinson's disease," she recalls. Although many of the participants were further along in the journey with Parkinson's disease than she was at the time, Billie felt an immediate connection and knew RSB was something she needed in her life. "It put a smile on my face; I couldn't stop smiling," she said, reflecting on her first experience.

Personal impact Now, nearly a year later, Billie has seen firsthand the transformative effects that RSB has had on her health and well-being. "I feel like I've moved on to the next stage of Parkinson's, but it's still better than before," she shares. Each class leaves Billie feeling better, both physically and emotionally, and she finds herself attending even on days when she doesn't feel like it. "I know I will feel much better afterward," she says, emphasizing how RSB has enhanced her ability to move her body and engage in activities she loves.

Sharing her experience Billie's experience with Rock Steady Boxing has not only improved her own health, but she is now a passionate advocate for the program. "Oh, my goodness YES, YES," she exclaims when asked if she would recommend RSB to others with Parkinson's disease. "Anytime I have a chance to talk about RSB to anybody, whether they have Parkinson's or have a family or friend, I encourage them to get involved." For Billie, Rock Steady Boxing at HealthWorks has become a vital part of her life, offering both physical strength and a sense of community that empowers her every day.

About Rock Steady Boxing at HealthWorks For those unfamiliar with the program, Rock Steady Boxing is a fitness program created specifically for people living with Parkinson's disease. The program uses boxing inspired exercises to help participants improve strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. While it may sound intense, the classes do not involve fighting. Instead, participants work through guided workouts that include punching bags, footwork drills, stretching, and functional movements that support everyday mobility.

At HealthWorks Fitness Center, the program provides a supportive space where individuals with Parkinson's can stay active while connecting with others who understand the challenges of the disease. Certified coaches lead each class and adapt the exercises to meet participants where they are physically. The result is a program that is both challenging and encouraging helping people push their limits while feeling safe and supported.

Beyond the physical benefits, many participants say the program restores a sense of independence and hope. Rock Steady Boxing reminds people that a Parkinson's diagnosis does not mean giving up an active life. Instead, if offers a way to fight back against the symptoms and stay engaged with the world around them.
