FOREWORD Sciences to the shores of the Persian Gulf.” I am happy to announce that the Thumbay Group has entered into an agreement with the government of Serbia, to establish Gulf Medical University and Thumbay Hospital in Belgrade. The agreement was signed with Dr. Zlatibor Loncar- Minister of Health and Prof. Mladen Sarcevic – Minister of Education of the Republic of Serbia.

The Thumbay Group remains resolute in its vision for the future. This is not only inspiring, but also a transformative time in all verticals of the group. The group has evolved into a true leader with a profound legacy of building healthy communities. We take great pride in our position as an asset with impact in every aspect of our work. We look forward to a future filled with promise I am delighted to mention that Gulf Medical University has completed 20 years. I attribute the success of the institution to the Grace of the Almighty, dedication, and hard work of the team, as well as the institution’s philosophy of constant innovation. We have received excellent support from the government throughout this journey. I wish to congratulate and thank the Rulers, Ministries, Health Authorities, and Chancellor of the university Professor Hossam Hamdy and the entire faculty and staff for their invaluable contributions to the success of the institution. Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman has been featured on the cover of the renowned international education publication Knowledge Review Magazine, published from Ohio, USA. The magazine has included Gulf Medical University in its list of ‘10 Best Value Institutes in UAE 2018’. The cover-story credits GMU with “bringing the valued education of Medical

October was a busy month for most of us with the city-wide breast cancer events held to create awareness about the disease. Our very own HEALTH magazine also participated in this very worthy cause with an event at Le Meridian Hotel in Dubai on October 29. The pink event brought together survivors, experts, and guests who came for one cause—to further create awareness about breast cancer. Don’t miss our interview with esteemed Specialist Oncologist at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai Dr. Nidha Iqbal Shapoo who spoke about the importance of having that conversation about breast cancer to create awareness. This month also saw a unique event take place at Dubai Studio City—The Big Bad Wolf Sale, an extravaganza that went on non-stop, 24-hours a day. I had the chance to meet both the Founder Andrew Yap and Managing Partner Mohamed Al Aidaroos who discussed the core mission behind the event.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, announced the return of the Dubai Fitness Challenge from October 19 to November 17. The goal of the challenge was to encourage people to exercise every day for at least 30 minutes and to make Dubai one of the most active cities in the world. Keeping this in mind, we have some fitness related features in this issue—one is on the key rules of running. The other takes a look at why a boot camp may just be the best way to get in shape for the festive season. With so much news, I sign off. Before that, we at HEALTH magazine wish our readers a very happy UAE National Day in advance.

A Conversation about Breast

Cancer

The Importance of Screening

Dr. Nidha Iqbal Shapoo Medical Oncologist Thumbay Hospital, Dubai

uring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, HEALTH magazine spearheaded a breast cancer event with Beau Monde on October 29 in Dubai. HEALTH speaks with the event keynote speaker and Medical Oncologist at Thumbay Hospital Dubai, Dr. Nidha Iqbal Shapoo who reveals the importance of such events and why we need to have that conversation about the disease. Nov/Dec 2018

10

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in females and the second most common cause of death due to cancer. The key reason that breast cancer screening is so important is because if it is detected in the early stages, it’s completely curable. Events such as these bring awareness to people about the various risk factors and signs/symptoms of breast cancer. Mammograms should be undertaken every year, starting from age 40 to age 55. Then after age 55, every two years and it should be continued until the end of lifespan. Females at high risk, in view of strong family history and positive BRCA gene, should begin screening early.

The Stigma I feel there are some cultural taboos in this part of the world related to breasts. Even if a woman feels a lump, sometimes she will neglect it due to hesitation to consult a male doctor and a sense of denial that it could be breast cancer. Despite the advances in treatment and awareness, many women often present when the cancer is at stage 3 which is a late stage. Stages of Breast Cancer Survival rates reduce as the stage increases. Screening detects cancer at stage 0 and 1 when the survival is one hundred percent. Stages 1 and 2 can also be

diagnosed when a woman detects her lump early. In Stage 3, the survival drops to 60 to 70 percent. Stage 4 is not curable and has already spread to the bones, lungs, liver, or brain. Other Symptoms

A lump is the most common presentation of breast cancer, but there can be skin changes on the breast such as edema, dimpling or hardening, or changes in the nipple—such as abnormal discharge, bleeding, or retraction of the nipple.

in females. Apart from age and female gender, obesity and a lack of physical activity, are responsible for mostly postmenopausal breast cancer. What is important in family history is the number of first degree relatives who had breast cancer. If there is one who had breast cancer at an age younger than 50, then the risk increases by 2 times and if more than one, then the risk increases by three to four times than the general population. Other risk factors include contraceptive pills, hormone replacement therapy, and late pregnancies.

Treatment

The Gene Connection

Treatment for breast cancer involves surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy and targeted therapy depending on the stage and receptor status. Breast cancer is not a single disease anymore, so the treatment differs from one patient to the other.

Lifestyle Link

Breast cancer is a lifestyle disease driven by estrogen

The BRCA gene mutation is the common cause of inherited breast cancer. A person should be tested for BRCA if she develops cancer at a younger age or has a strong family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. If the gene is positive, the risk of breast cancer is 80 to 90 percent and ovarian cancer is 60 to 70 percent.

Speak Up

What I want to emphasize is breast issue should not be a taboo. Examine your breasts, educate yourself, and the people around you. Consult a doctor early in case of any symptoms. Understand that screening is available and can detect cancer at an early stage. Also, talk to your family and speak with your colleagues; have that conversation. Speak to survivors and stir up that awareness. It could just save a life. (Credit: Dr. Nidha Iqbal Shapoo, Medical Oncologist at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai) H

USING THE POWER OF POSITIVITY TO HEAL… MEET THE SUPER HEROES BEHIND SUPERHOPE

Tarik Batal and Basma Masri are the Creators of Superhope, an engaging and impactful initiative which aims at building relationships with globally recognized hospitals and superhero children. By boosting a child’s Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) they make that child believe they are a Superhero, which enables a more positive mind-body connection.

Nov/Dec 2018

12

The Power of a Positive Mental Attitude “During a meeting with a friend who was a child psychologist, Basma and I discovered how important it was to help boost the positive mental attitude of a child battling cancer. It was that which led us to a creative session where we thought, what better way to boost a child’s Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) than to make that child believe they are a Superhero and so that was how the idea of Superhope was born." The Scientific Basis “PMA stands for Positive Mental Attitude, and it refers to the person’s state of mind. We now have enough evidence globally that proves how the mind and body are integrated, what the mind believes, the body perceives. In other words, a healthy mind promotes a healthy body. It is not unfamiliar to feel down when you are ill, let alone be ill with something quite as serious as cancer. This is where Superhope comes to play; our method helps reverse the mental impact cancer can have on a child by empowering them into believing they are a Superhero, and not just any Superhero, but their own."

Creating the Superhero “We do this by starting with one question, ‘If you were a Superhero, how would you imagine yourself?’ Our talents then help materialize their ideas into actual characters by first working with the children to illustrate their beings, to then designing every detail of their super suits, and finally the work in the background to turn their visions into reality by hand-making their slick threads. After which we create their out-of-thisworld professional photo shoot where they get to become their alter-egos. So far, Superhope has worked with hospitals in Dubai, San Francisco, Orange County, and London with many more in the pipeline."

The Powerful Impact “When reminding a child with cancer that he/she has the power to level up from an ill state to a super state, their behavior shifts from a feeling of helplessness to a feeling of power. When the mind can shift its thought process to that level of thinking, the body will react and both the chemicals in the brain and the energy in the body all become aligned to one purpose to become what we believe. To believe you are greater than what is trying to fight you is the first step to defeating the disease and we truly believe that this can cause super effects in fighting something as strong as cancer.” H

ON A WELLNESS JOURNEY WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) The power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming and reshaping several aspects of our lives. It is fundamentally changing entire sectors, from retail, manufacturing, hospitality, and others to provide better services. "In healthcare, what challenges is AI addressing? Healthcare systems around the world are under tremendous pressure; in the UAE, preventable diseases statistics are challenging: 1 in 5 people are diabetic, 9 in 10 people are at risk of suffering from a

healthier lifestyles, as well as enabling providers to help patients' more effectively. AI has the ability to enhance individuals’ wellness by capturing and analyzing their health data, predicting the impact of their current lifestyle choices, and simulating their future health state. Patients' embark on a wellness journey with AI and proactively initiate their care management, rather than only following their providers’ assessment and orders. AI is very powerful in driving individuals to change their habits, improving their health outcomes, and alleviating demand on the healthcare system. "

AI APPLICATIONS "In our 2017 healthcare report 'What Doctor', we highlight the use of AI applications to encourage healthier behavior in individuals and help with the proactive management of their care, keeping people out of hospitals and living healthier lives. An example of this is PwC’s Bodylogical™ - a scientifically developed digital model of the human body that enables true-life simulations to predict the likely progression of chronic

diseases based on today’s actions and interventions. Using pattern recognition, this solution is precise in its simulation of the unique requirements for each individual, motivating and taking into account how people respond differently to many inter-related factors such as lifestyle, environmental, genomic, and others that can lead to chronic conditions or better health. Not only are individuals in control of their wellness, but also providers, payers, and pharmaceutical companies can better understand how interventions impact individual patients' or patient populations in order to become healthier faster and less expensively. In South Texas, PwC’s Bodylogical™, with the interchange from DoubleJump Health™, aims at reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases and provides care to a community, referred to as “Diabetesville”, with more than half of the population being diabetic or living with undiagnosed diabetes. This approach helped raise the health literacy of people unaware of their risk of chronic diseases, lower diabetic patients’ levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c),

and reduce hospital readmissions. Patients' were empowered with technology tools such as wearables and self-service kiosks to monitor their biometrics regularly, and were supported virtually by a care team who engages them and help them better control their disease."

AI TODAY "Today, AI is empowering you to be proactive and keep well – it will enable you to understand how your actions can harm or benefit your body and will influence the care that you will need. The UAE is very well positioned to pioneer this journey and has already started doing so with the ministerial appointment for AI, and the next steps would be using applications such as Bodylogical." How Partial Knee Replacement Can Help with Arthritis of the Knee Dr. Mir Zia Ur Rahman Ali

Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon & Advanced Revisional Joint Replacement Surgeon, Thumbay Hospital India Pvt Ltd.

A partial knee replacement surgery is an alternative to total knee replacement for some patients' with osteoarthritis of the knee and can be done when the damage is confined to a particular compartment of the knee. Dr. Mir Zia Ur Rahman Ali, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon & Advanced Revisional Joint Replacement Surgeon, Thumbay Hospital India Pvt Ltd. explains this groundbreaking technique.

Nov/Dec 2018

16

BACKGROUND

In the past, partial knee replacement was reserved for older patients', but Dr. Ali explains that now, partial knee replacement is often preferred in the younger population as recovery is quicker with less pain. He adds, “About five to six percent of patients' with arthritic knees are estimated to be eligible for partial knee replacement."

OSTEOARTHRITIS DEFINED

Osteoarthritis is the wearing away of the connective tissue, called articular cartilage, within the joint. As Dr. Ali reiterates, articular cartilage prevents one bone from scraping against another. The cartilage acts as a shock absorber in the joint and allows for smooth and stable movement within the joint. “When the cartilage thins, the joint can inflame and you may feel pain and stiffness in the joint and your range of motion may be limited,” he says. “Up to 30 percent of the population is believed to have knee osteoarthritis and until age 50, knee osteoarthritis is equally common in men and women, but after age 50, more women are affected."

PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT EXPLAINED

In a partial knee replacement, only the damaged part of the knee cartilage is replaced with a prosthesis. The healthy

cartilage and bone, as well as all of the ligaments are preserved. Dr. Ali explains that candidates for partial knee replacement include patients with medial (the inside compartment of the joint) or lateral knee osteoarthritis (outside compartment farthest from the opposite knee.) “Medial knee joint degeneration is the most common deformity of arthritis,” he notes.

ADVANTAGES

Compared to total knee replacement, Dr. Ali points out that partial knee replacement better preserves a range of motion and knee function because it preserves healthy tissue and bone in the knee. “For these reasons, patients' tend to be more satisfied with partial knee replacement compared with total knee replacement,” he narrates, and they are still candidates for total knee replacement should they ever need it in the future. Moreover, there is also less blood loss during surgery, and knee motion recovers faster with partial knee replacement. More importantly, according to Dr. Ali, because the bone, cartilage, and ligaments in the healthy parts of the knee are maintained, many patients' report that a unicompartmental knee replacement feels more natural than a total knee replacement. A unicompartmental knee may

also bend better.

INDICATIONS

The minimally invasive partial knee replacement is indicated in patients' who have severe arthritis of the knee that have failed conservative treatments. The partial knee surgery may be possible if the arthritis in the knee is confined to a limited area, notes Dr. Ali, and if the arthritis is widespread, then the partial knee replacement is not appropriate, and should not be considered. In addition, the partial knee surgery is recommended in patients' who are older than 55 years, not obese, relatively sedentary, and have intact ligaments. However, Dr. Ali explains that most patients' who seek surgical management have arthritis that is too advanced for the minimally invasive partial knee replacement procedure. “Since surgical treatment is considered a 'last-resort' by most patients, by the time surgery is necessary, their arthritis is too advanced to consider this minimally invasive procedure,” he details, and if partial knee replacement is done in a patient who is a poor candidate, failure rates can be high, and conversion to a traditional total knee surgery may be more difficult.

Nov/Dec 2018

17

FACTORS TO CONSIDER ABOUT KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY • You may want to consider a knee replacement if your knee pain persists despite taking anti-inflammatory drugs and maintaining a healthy weight. • Your doctor will ask you to identify the area of pain in your knee, and then check your range of motion and the knee's stability. An X-ray of the knee will determine your eligibility for partial knee replacement. However,

Nov/Dec 2018

18

your surgeon may not know for certain if you are a good candidate until the surgery has begun. • You must have an intact anterior cruciate ligament, a sufficient range of knee motion, damage to only one compartment, and a stable knee. The angulation of the deformity is also considered. • In the past, a partial knee replacement was considered only in patients' older than 60 years who were sedentary, but younger, more active patients' are increasingly being considered. Dr. Faraz Farishta

ARE YOU OBESE?

IT MAY BE A GOOD TIME TO CHECK YOUR THYROID LEVELS Nov/Dec 2018

20

Consultant Endocrinologist Thumbay Hospital India Pvt Ltd.

Surprisingly, as many as 10 percent of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency and in fact, hypothyroidism is more common than you would believe. The problem is that millions of people are currently hypothyroid and are not even aware of it. HEALTH speaks to Dr. Faraz Farishta, Consultant Endocrinologist at Thumbay Hospital India Pvt Ltd. about understanding thyroid diseases and how these are treated.

Statistics

Thyroid diseases are common worldwide, Dr. Farishta reveals, and in India too, there is a significant burden of thyroid diseases. “Various studies on thyroid disease has estimated that about 42 million people in India suffer from thyroid diseases,” he tells and the five common thyroid diseases in India include: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter and iodine deficiency disorders, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer.

What it Means

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone, explains Dr. Farishta, elaborating, “Since the main purpose of the thyroid hormone is to ‘run the body's metabolism’, it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism.

Risk Factors

Women, particularly older women, are more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men. Dr. Farishta adds that some of the other risk factors include the following: race (being white or Asian), increasing age, and a higher risk for the person with diabetes, arthritis (chronic joint pains), or vitiligo.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

According to Dr. Farishta, there are many tell-tale symptoms of hypothyroidism. Some of these include: fatigue, weakness, weight gain, or

increased difficulty losing weight, coarse/dry hair, dry/rough pale skin, hair loss, and even intolerance to cold temperatures. “Other symptoms include muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches, constipation, depression, irritability, memory loss, and abnormal menstrual cycles,” he says, and it is also one of the leading causes of infertility. The paradox of this is that you may have one of these symptoms as your main complaint, while another person will not have that problem at all and will be suffering from an entirely different symptom. However, Dr. Farishta points out that most people will have a combination of these symptoms while occasionally, some patients' with hypothyroidism have no symptoms at all, or they are just so subtle that they go unnoticed. However, left untreated, the symptoms of hypothyroidism will usually progress, and rarely, complications can result in severe life-threatening depression, heart failure, or coma.

Diagnosis

The good news, tells Dr. Farishta, is that hypothyroidism can often be diagnosed with a simple blood test. “However, in some individuals, it's not so simple and more detailed tests are required,” he explains. “Most importantly, a consultation with a good endocrinologist will almost surely be required.”

Gold Standard Treatment

Hypothyroidism is completely treatable in many patients' simply by taking a small pill once a day, points out Dr. Farishta, however, this is not always so easy. “There are several types of thyroid hormone preparations and one type of medicine will not be the best therapy for all patients,” he concludes.

Five Foods Hypothyroid Patients' Should Avoid

Soy and soy-related products, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower.

About Dr. Faraz Farishta

Dr Faraz Farishta, Consultant Endocrinologist at Thumbay Hospital India Pvt Ltd. has been trained in the UK in diagnosing and treating thyroid and all complications associated with thyroid disorders. He has vast experience in treating thyroid disorders as well as infertility linked to thyroid disorders, thyroid complicating pregnancies, thyroid disorders in children, obesity with thyroid disorders, and diabetes and thyroid disorders. He is a member of both the American and Indian Thyroid Society and has also been invited by the American Thyroid Society to share his experiences on ‘Thyroid Disorders and Metabolic Syndrome—a Pan-India Study’ he conducted.

Fighting a Secret Battle‌ A Closer Look at

High Functioning Depression Nov/Dec 2018

22

One in four individuals’ is experiencing a mental illness, and it’s just not something we can continue to ignore. According to the World Health Organization, cases of depression have ballooned 20 percent in just one decade, making it the leading cause of disability worldwide. Therefore, understanding high functioning depression is imperative, as HEALTH investigates.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS

U.S. celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain, host of CNN’s food-and-travel-focused “Parts Unknown” television series, committed suicide this year while Kate Spade, a hugely successful American designer also ended her life. ‘High functioning depression’, explains Farah Dahabi, Clinical Social Worker and Head of Mental Health FirstAid UAE, is a pop culture term that’s given to describe a type of depression, known as pervasive depressive disorder or dysthymia. “People with dysthymia experience a chronically low or empty feeling that lasts at least two years,” she says, and while from the outside, it looks like they’re keeping it all together, from the inside they are struggling and suffering in silence. The problem is this type of depression doesn’t match the stereotype we have in our head of depression. It’s unlike severe depression which can disrupt relationships, work performance, and the ability to function. High functioning depression is like living with a chronically sprained ankle – it’s always hurting, but feels manageable. People

experiencing dysthymia are at high risk of developing more severe depression, anxiety, and or a substance abuse disorder.

Signs that indicate someone may be experiencing ‘high functioning’ depression include: feeling low, empty, or hopeless most days, a

SELF-HELP CHECKLIST

If you believe you may be experiencing ‘high functioning’ depression, set up an appointment with a psychologist to talk through your experience. They will be able to assess what you are experiencing, create a treatment plan with you, and guide your recovery. Other steps people can take include; getting regular exercise, drinking adequate water, establishing a healthy

negative or cynical attitude, low self-esteem, and fatigue. “While identifying ‘high functioning’ depression can be hard to identify in a loved one or colleague, it is not harder to diagnose or treat,” says Dahabi, “With proper treatment from a qualified mental health professional, recovery is possible.”

If you think someone you love or work with may be experiencing depression, take a Mental Health FirstAid UAE course today. It is a powerful toolkit that teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness. H

IS THERE A PATH TO END THE AUTISM EPIDEMIC? Between the ongoing debate about the possible link between autism and vaccinations, J.B. Handley, the father of a child with autism and Author of the book ‘How to End the Autism Epidemic’, suggests a promising middle-ground solution for this growing epidemic.

Nov/Dec 2018

24

TWO SIDES OF THE DEBATE

On one side of the debate are parents who believe that today’s high number of mandatory vaccinations (children in the 1960s received three vaccinations, today’s children receive 38) can trigger autism in vulnerable children. On the other side are health officials who deny any link. Handley points out that there is a wealth of relevant scientific studies that prove that autism prevalence has skyrocketed in the United States. “And since 2004, there have been 11 groundbreaking discoveries in separate, but related scientific fields that, taken together, reveal one of the causes of autism,” he tells. “Because of this new, published science, we now know that autism is created by immune activation events in the brain during critical phases of brain development, typically by the time a child is 36-months-old, and that these immune activation events in the brain can be triggered by the aluminum adjuvant in vaccines.”

in the mid-1980s provides a moderate solution. He also believes that there should be thorough screening before any vaccines are given to determine which children are at-risk from serious vaccine injury. “We have the capacity to systematically assess the children who are more vulnerable before they receive a vaccine. I’m not against all vaccinations all the time. But more screening to spare at-risk infants would be a positive step in the right direction, and it’s something that could be achieved today," he elaborates. Handley believes the following steps should be taken: Screening vulnerable children should be implemented immediately. Some vulnerabilities are because of genetics,

parental health histories of autoimmunity, and other children have problems that are apparent with a physical exam. Children who may have adverse reactions to vaccines also frequently have such conditions as ear infections, dark circles under the eyes, and eczema. Test children before giving booster shots. Booster shots are provided for most vaccines. Handley believes many of these shots are unnecessary, as immunity has already been accomplished through the initial vaccine. A simple blood test would reveal if a booster shot is really necessary, he says. Establish clear rules for when a child should not receive vaccinations. A child should not be vaccinated when he/she is sick, has eczema, is taking antibiotics, and several other conditions. H

VACCINE SCHEDULE

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the rates for autism in children went from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 children in 2017. Handley says returning to the vaccine schedule used

The ambiance is modern, but edgy—with chevron checked floors, an open kitchen, and expansive seating with the option to dine al fresco. To start, we nibbled on rye bread with salted butter and chives while our starters were a mélange of everything. We tried their signature burrata with a touch of truffle oil for a twist. We really enjoyed the beef marmalade toast—braised and slightly spicy, tender beef atop crispy toast topped with mozzarella cheese. Also, the deep fried calamari with

chipotle sauce was also light, tender, and crispy. We also indulged in a wood fried beets salad which added depth and texture to our starters. From their ample menu, there are meats Under the Josper Grill which included cuts like grilled Australian Lamb chops, grilled boneless baby chicken, and braised Black Angus short rib. The Grain Fed Australian Wagyu included classic cuts like filet mignon and rib eye and then my favorite—Australian Black Angus steak as well as filet mignon and T-bone steak. I opted for the Australian Wagyu accompanied by wild mushroom cream sauce while the kids dined on filet mignon cuts as well as a rib eye. We shared sides—from the baked truffle mac and cheese to the sweet potato fries. We also tucked into wild mushrooms, and classic mashed potato; which can never go wrong, especially when paired with steak. For those with a sweet tooth, from the dessert menu we shared a deconstructed cheesecake—a mound of creamy cheese on top of cookie crumbs and a superrich S’More dessert that had a topping of baked-to-a-crisp marshmallows filled with caramel ice-cream and a cookie crust. Final Say: If you love premium cuts of meat with lots of sides and sauces, head to Graze Gastro Grill at La Ville Hotel; you won’t be disappointed. H Visit: www.livelaville.com

THE RIGHT KIND OF DIET TO TREAT ARTHRITIS Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints and the two most common types are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While it can be treated with medicines, lifestyle changes, as well as exercise, Dr. Humeira Badsha, Consultant Rheumatologist and Board Member at Middle East Arthritis Foundation reveals there are also many foods that can ease inflammation and help relieve pain.

Nov/Dec 2018

28

Oily Fish

Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and trout have potent anti-inflammatory effects. They decrease joint pain intensity, morning stiffness, and the use of pain relievers.

Ginger

Ginger blocks the production of substances that cause inflammation. Consuming ginger in fresh, powdered, or dried form aids in reducing the symptoms of arthritis.

Broccoli

One of the healthiest foods out there, broccoli contains sulforaphane, which could heal inflammation, according to studies.

Walnuts

These nuts are nutrient-dense, associated with reduced markers of inflammation as well as high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Berries

Two weekly servings of strawberries lower the chances of an elevated level of inflammatory markers in the blood by 14 percent. Berries are rich in plant-based compounds quercetin and rutin that boast a huge number of health benefits.

Olive Oil

Patients' who consumed an olive oil capsule each day for 24 weeks showed a near 40 percent decrease in symptoms. Olive oil is an integral part of a diet designed to treat arthritis.

Spinach and leafy greens

While all leafy greens combat inflammation, spinach in particular contains the antioxidant kaempferol that decreases the effects of inflammatory agents. H

Hosting a Festive Party... What You Need to Know Hosting the perfect festive party can be tricky with those endless lists of everything from the food and dĂŠcor, to the guest list. To simplify matters, use this guide to make your festive party stress-free and enjoyable.

Nov/Dec 2018

32

First determine the type of party Are you hosting an intimate gathering with close friends and family? Or are you inviting a large group? Also decide on whether your party is a sit down formal meal or a casual buffet with hors d’ouevres. This will automatically make planning the other elements of your party easier.

of lots of decorations, stick to one centerpiece, such as a floral arrangement. Place a few candles and fresh flower arrangements in the central seating area as well as the foyer section of your living room.

UNDERSTAND YOUR GUESTS IN ADVANCE

COMPILE A GUEST LIST AND SEND OUT INVITATIONS

Once you've finalized the type of party you're going to host, settle on a time, date, the menu, and the final guest list. Then put together a list of people to invite and decide how you're going to inform your guests. During the festive season it is suggested to invite guests a minimum of three to four weeks in advance as this is the busiest season of the year for parties and get-togethers.

serve as hors d’ouevres and then course by course. Once each item is clearly decided, create your shopping list accordingly or decide if you will be outsourcing the festive meal from a caterer.

If you are hosting a larger gathering, be sure to ask in advance for any allergies or specific food preferences. For example, if many of your guests are vegetarian this will obviously dictate the food on the menu. Also, to be safe, keep gluten-free, dairyfree, wheat-free, and eggless dishes clearly marked and set to one side to make it easier for guests who are following certain dietary guidelines. Practice Meditation for Life-Changing Benefits

From enhanced clarity of thoughts and improved concentration to relief from stress and anxiety, just 10 minutes a day is literally all it takes to include meditation in your life. Yoga teacher Sapna Rana Rawat explains the technique.

Nov/Dec 2018

36

Sapna Rana Rawat Yoga teacher

Steps for 10 minutes of meditation for

beginners Sit in any comfortable cross-legged meditative posture ensuring your spine is straight and elbows and shoulders relaxed. Gently close your eyes, and visualize your whole body relaxing in a sitting posture. Slowly, take your awareness to your normal and natural flow of breath in the nostrils and observe the air flowing in and out for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, mentally start counting your breaths in the reverse order starting from 50. As you breathe in and out, mentally say 50, in and out say 49, then 48 and so on. Whenever you miss any count, start again from 50. Make sure the breath is normal and natural. Once you reach 1, stop counting and observe your mental state for a few seconds and then slowly switch your awareness to your whole body sitting still. Gently moving your fingers, bring your palms together and start rubbing to generate heat. Cover your eyelids with the energized palms and let the heat be transmitted to your eyes.

Slowly uncover and open your eyes. It is a very easy, but a highly powerful technique of meditation. Counting in reverse order keeps you alert as you generally don’t count like that and focusing on your normal breath connects you with yourself, developing self-awareness and love. This simple meditation will immediately calm your mind and slowly start influencing your behavior in a positive manner. If you’re unable to sit in a cross-legged posture, you can also do it while sitting in a chair. TAPPING INTO THE POWER OF READING

ANDREW YAP, THE MANAGING DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF THE BIG BAD WOLF

The Start

The recent Big Bad Wolf event, held non-stop, from October 18 to 28, was not a book fair, but an event with a mission—to turn the new generation into avid readers. Here Andrew Yap, the Managing Director and Founder of the Big Bad Wolf and Mohamed Al Aidaroos, Managing Partner of Incredible Books Dubai and Managing Partner of Big Bad Wolf events in Dubai, talk about why reading is critical for a developing society and can boost our wellness.

Nov/Dec 2018

38

It all started in 2006 when my wife Jacqueline and I opened a book store in Malaysia where we are from. But we both wanted to do something different as both of us felt that if you are going to launch a business, then do something that will contribute to society. As the cost of living in Malaysia is very high, we wanted a business that would enable people to purchase books which are a luxury, but should not be. I always wanted to price books at a point where customers did not have to worry about the price. That is the right way— when you sell to the bottom of the pyramid is when you can really make a difference. We realized an event would be better to create that excitement. Then two years later, the opportunity to do Big Bad Wolf came up. First we did it in a hall in Kuala Lumpur that was one quarter of the size of this hall in Dubai and it was a huge success.

The Brand Name We thought, how do we bring a lost generation of readers back? By creating a fun event and for kids, the character association was important.

Digital World Basically the last 10 to 15 years, the digital media has killed a whole generation of readers. Our job is to create a new generation of readers. It is a twopronged approach for us; one to bring books back in the hands of readers and secondly, to introduce books to the new generation.

Making a Difference Basically our mission is to change the world through books. Books are the fastest and quickest way to make a difference. I was fortunate to attend a government convent school in Malaysia where many of the kids were from well-to-do families and had access to books. I could see the difference that books made.

Future Plans This year we will be finishing up 15 events and our next year’s goal is to do 45 events in different cities. We will be adding more in the Middle East region as well as Africa and if possible, some in South America.

MOHAMED AL AIDAROOS, MANAGING PARTNER OF INCREDIBLE BOOKS, DUBAI AND MANAGING PARTNER OF BIG BAD WOLF EVENTS IN DUBAI

The Inspiration To start, I have a serious passion for books. With books we can create the leaders of the future which is the fulcrum for the development and growth of a nation. It has been a dream to bring such an event to Dubai and a true gift for the nation. It’s a social contribution rather than a business. Profit and loss is not our focus, but rather an increase in the number of readers is our true profit and loss.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) We are very fortunate that in Dubai we work with The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF). I approached them in 2018 and I presented this concept to them because I had been actively searching for support; we continued discussing this concept and agreed to have a partnership. So while the vast majority of the sale’s three million books are in English, event partner MBRF, has contributed a number of Arabic books and publications through its publishing arm, Qindeel Printing, Publishing, and Distribution. And I am very excited to have that association with them. And of course, the National Media Council and Dubai Studio City; both to whom I am very grateful for their utmost support.

Nov/Dec 2018

40

Leadership of Dubai We are here to bring the physical book back into your hands; I recall His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum saying that reading is the key for development and growth of a nation, especially amongst the youngest. This is what we want; to make books accessible to everyone.

Future As per our strategy; we will expand the space from what it is now at fifty thousand square feet to a bigger space. Also, we will take it from Dubai to other countries in the region because the mission of Big Bad Wolf is to spread knowledge. H

Weighing in on Weight

Plateau

You’re eating healthy, working out at the gym daily, and haven’t touched a slice of chocolate cake in months— yet the last few kilos of weight won’t budge. Shaazia Qureishi Kanchwala, Owner and Founder of Yasmin Karachiwala’s the Pad Pilates and Dance Studio in Dubai helps navigate through the dilemma of weight plateau.

Nov/Dec 2018

42

Also, ensure that you include some form of cardiovascular activity into your workout regime, as that is the key to shedding the excess weight.

EXERCISE RESTRAINT

PROTEIN INTAKE

We are what we eat. So, if you want to fit into that dress, make sure you’re eating food that’s healthy, nutritious, and helps you feel energized, tells Kanchwala, explaining, “Ensure you’re eating enough protein and not loading up on carbs. The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This amounts to about 56 grams of protein for the average sedentary man and 46 grams of protein for the average woman.”

WATER PLAYS A ROLE

Another huge point we tend to downplay—ensure you’re also drinking lots of water. If you’re feeling thirsty, Kanchwala says that your body is already dehydrated. “So, if you’re eating a perfect diet, but not drinking enough water, you’ll lose less weight, as your body will not efficiently burn fat anymore,” she details, so - thirsty or not - drink up.

GET MOVING

“Physical fitness is a prerequisite to happiness” said Joseph Pilates. “You can be eating right and drinking water, but it is really only physical activity that is going to make you feel fresher, which in turn, will make you look great in that dress,” points out Kanchwala. “A toned body is more attractive that just a thin one, so take a fitness class; whatever you like - weight training, Barre classes, Pilates, yoga, spinning; just make sure you’re getting your movement in, getting your joints moving, and your blood flowing to feel and look your best.”

Festive season means an overload of treats and goodies. But Kanchwala asserts that balance is key. “This doesn’t mean that you can eat an aisle of desserts for lunch and then starve for dinner,” she says, but your taste buds and your brain are the real culprit, and it’s important to be aware of that. You can satisfy your craving with two bites of a dessert, the more we eat, the less satisfying each bite gets anyway. So don’t restrict yourself, as that will make you crave that treat even more. She advises that you allow yourself to have one or two bites, and really, really enjoy that bite. Savor it and don’t let yourself feel guilty at all. And then, stop. That’s the trick.

FOOD COMBINATIONS

There is no magic wand for weight loss, but are there certain foods and food combinations that can boost the metabolism; as follows: butter coffee in the morning is a great start to the day. Green tea throughout the day when you’re craving carbs is good to curb the cravings. Drink ginger powder in hot water to burn extra calories.Eat foods that are high in fat, but GOOD fat. Like avocado, cheese, dark chocolate, whole eggs, nuts, and chia seeds. Add these foods into different parts of your day to help give your metabolism a boost. H

THE FIVE RULES OF RUNNING ALL OF KNOW HOW TO RUN, BUT IT TAKES MORE THAN PUTTING ON A PAIR OF RUNNING SHOES AND GOING OUTSIDE. HERE ARE SOME KEY RULES FOR RUNNING TO HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY.

Nov/Dec 2018

44

CLEAR IT WITH YOUR DOCTOR If you've had some medical problems or are worried about running, it is advised to visit your doctor for a medical examination to rule out any kinds of problems. Most people don’t need to, however it’s a good way to clear your doubts. ORGANIZE YOUR SHOES Running can put weight on your joints, muscles, and tendons, so be sure you have a good pair of shoes to take in some of the shock. Shoes created for other sports such as tennis won't provide the protection and support you need, so buying shoes especially for running is well worth it to prevent discomfort and avoid injury in the future.

DON’T WORRY ABOUT TIME OR DISTANCE A GPS wristwatch is a good running gadget however, when you're first starting to run, don’t worry about running for a set amount of time or a rigidly fixed distance. Instead, aim to reach a landmark which can be changed to one that is slightly further after every couple of runs. COMBINED APPROACHES Embarking upon a sport that your body isn't used to is always going to feel uneasy initially, so instead of taking an all-or-nothing approach, do a run/walk combined approach. Start with a 45-second run/one-minute walk and then move up gradually, slowly increasing the run time between breaks until you stop them altogether. This will help your body adapt faster to the new running routine. H

WARM UP By warming up for five to 10 minutes before you run, you prepare your body for the tougher movements in advance. Increasing your heart rate and relaxing your muscles enables optimal performance. And remember to warm down afterwards as this enables muscle recovery.

Jump Start Your Fitness with a In a city that prides itself on getting fitter and healthier, participating in a boot camp can do more than boost your fitness quotient, as Mostafa Mersal, Coach at Fitness Bootcamp Dubai (FBC DXB) explains. With more fitness challenges taking place in Dubai recently, Mersal points out that it’s apparent that residents of the city have a big appetite for becoming more healthy and fit. “Participating in all these challenges also gives them the opportunity to test themselves and have a more accurate assessment of their overall fitness level, he tells.

Nov/Dec 2018

46

Boot camp is a military type of exercise used to build strength and endurance. The workout consists of designed programs and is popular because it helps you in working out every muscle in your body, says Mersal, and exercises can also be done anywhere and at any place without the need of

too much equipment. “It is categorized as the best group exercise, primarily because it is made up of simple bodyweight movements and is not only beneficial for losing weight and building strength, but also for training people to get through their day-to-day activities more effectively, he explains. As it always starts with a group of motivated individuals working together to achieve their goal and inspire each other during their workout, boot camp participants are there to encourage one another as well as motivate each other.Boot camps offer creative and diverse exercises so that the overall journey becomes smoother and

more entertaining; and the participants do not have to be in good body shape to do these exercises. It helps build confidence, increases your energy level, and provides you with self-discipline, selfcontrol, and responsibility. It gives you motivation, and most importantly, it is a fun and healthy activity that helps you meet new people and creates a competitive environment. The good thing in boot camp is that you can always modify certain exercises that will work best for you; and still work on the same muscle group. Another benefit of boot camp workouts is that most combine periods of very vigorous activity with short

rest breaks. This makes it the ideal type of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). H

A Results-Driven Workout for

Every Goal

When it comes to fitness, the results are unlimited. Whether you’re looking to lose weight or tone up, a clear training plan can help you achieve the results you want. Here are four different fitness goals with the recommended class to achieve the results you want.

Nov/Dec 2018

48

Desired Result: Weight Loss

Class recommendation: Cycling and Circuit Training Cycling is a bike-based class that will maximize energy expenditure and raise your heart rate too; this coupled with a circuit training class will ensure that you are targeting muscular endurance as well as aerobic endurance.

Desired Result: Tone Up

Class recommendation: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Pilates If your aim is to tone up then HIIT will give you an afterburn effect, helping you to continue burning calories even after you finish your workout - this alongside the weighted exercises will help tone your major muscles. Use Pilates to tone your core - a stronger core will help develop posture and balance between the muscles you are shaping whilst attending the other recommended classes to help you tone up.

Desired Result: Increase Endurance

Class Recommendation: Swimming and Yoga Swimming is ideal to help boost your endurance levels,

plus it complements other group classes. Yoga not only works well with swimming, but on its own, can make the body more mobile and promote balance.

Desired Result: To Build Muscle

Class Recommendation: Boxing Boxing can develop your strength and speed, but when you combine this upper body workout with a vigorous kickboxing class, it will engage the lower body.

This will ensure that you are building muscle from head to toe. (Credit: Fitness First National Academy Manager, Katherine Benson, and Fitness First Nutrition Manager, Banin Shahine) H

300M

Revisiting its iconic Seamaster Diver 300M, Omega has done it again with its latest Seamaster Professional Diver 300M which has always had a loyal fan base since 1993. Showcasing unique ocean technology and design, the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M indicated the return of Omega to crafting diving timepieces as well as reinforcing its longstanding relationship with the brand’s partner James Bond. And 25 years later, Omega is presenting 14 distinct novelties with the quintessentially British Daniel Craig as the face of the new Seamaster Professional Diver 300M.

Details Now larger in size at 42 millimeters, each new Diver 300M showcases several retooled exterior design aspects. One is the diving bezel—now crafted in ceramic, with the diving scale made in white enamel. The date window has been shifted to six o’clock and the dials are also crafted from polished ceramic. A subtle change is the ever so slight reshaping of the skeleton hands. Powered by the Master Chronometer Caliber 8800, this merges next level performance, magnetic resistance, and precision.

Latest Technology The helium escape valve has been one of the key strengths of the Diver 300M models. In the latest collection, the valve has been patented by Omega. Crafted in a conical shape and due to its innovative technology, this enables it to be used under the water. Case Back The back of the timepiece includes a wavepatterned edge. Through the sapphire crystal, the METAS-approved Master Chronometer Caliber 8800 is evident. He adds, “The addition of design-enabled technologies, such as our new infotainment system and the LED headlights demonstrate our drive towards ever greater desirability for the customer.”

DESIGN

The result is that today, the exterior has been streamlined to a superlatively modern design aesthetic, giving the Range Rover Sport a more agile look without altering its core identity. From the front, there is a redesigned grille in addition to intelligent Pixellaser LED headlights which add highly advanced luminance and intelligently blanks sections of LEDs to prevent the glares of oncoming drivers. Also, a new bumper further adds to the more masculine exterior.

THE CABIN

The interior is just as cutting edge, with a Touch Pro Duo infotainment system—referred to as ‘Blade’ by its developers and is the most exceptional to have ever been developed by Jaguar Land Rover. In the midst of the cabin sits two highdefinition 10-inch touchscreens merging a futuristic ambiance with an engaging interface.

TECHNOLOGY

With up to 14 power points, the in-car connectivity is taken up several levels and even includes a domestic plug socket for

Deciphering K-Beauty Ingredients... What Do We Really Need

Many skincare products make huge promises, but what truly works and delivers bonafide results are what consumers want. To help decipher the mainstays of truly effective K-beauty skincare, Jude Chao, a K-beauty expert and blogger from Fifty Shades of Snail reveals her list of the most power-packed ingredients out there.

Hyaluronic Acid

An ingredient that Western beauty brands sometimes market as a premium addition to products, this is found in just about everything in K-beauty and is a humectant. Hydration is critical to plump, glowing skin, so look for hyaluronic acid in your toners, essences, and serums.

Benefits

Hyaluronic acid holds many times its own weight in water and allows that water to enter the skin rather than evaporate into the air, making it a vital component in this hydrating skincare product.

Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) Extract Often marketed towards sensitive or acne-prone skin, Centella Asiatica is a powerful antiinflammatory ingredient that works to calm irritation and heal a damaged skin barrier. You will find it listed simply as Centella Asiatica extract, but compounds derived from it, including madecassoside and asiaticoside, are also sometimes found in ingredients lists.

Benefits

Centella Asiatica, like most other botanical extracts found in K-beauty, helps provide antioxidant protection against celldamaging free radicals.

Ginseng Extract

Used in traditional herbal medicine across much of Asia, Ginseng extract is a powerhouse ingredient in an intensive anti-aging skincare routine.

Benefits

In addition to being anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, studies have shown that topically applied skincare containing Ginseng can promote collagen production and reduce hyperpigmentation, leading to firmer, brighter, and more resilient skin.

Saccharomyces, Galatomyces, or Bifida Ferment Filtrate Luxury Japanese brand SK-II kicked off a frenzy when their Facial Treatment Essence hit the market, but rice and yeast ferment ingredients have found a home in Korean skincare at every price point. Fermentation in general has great potential for skincare. The fermentation process breaks compounds down into smaller components that can be more readily absorbed and used by the skin.

calming properties that are especially helpful for acne. Snail mucin may also help heal UV damage. H

Benefits

Ferments have been demonstrated to improve healing (which has beneficial applications for aging skin), balance skin’s moisture levels, and lighten hyperpigmentation.

Snail Secretion Filtrate/Snail Mucin

This list wouldn’t be complete without snail, which continues to appear in K-beauty long after the snail craze first began. Snail mucin is highly protective, forming an emollient barrier on skin that helps to hold moisture in.

Benefits

It has been shown to speed wound healing and has

Why it Matters: Having that Conversation with Your Kids about

Bullying

Bullying is a very serious concern gripping educational institutes around the world today. While schools adopt a zero-tolerance policy, unfortunately it still exists. Often times, the crux of the problem are the kids who keep their suffering a secret. Jyotika Aggarwal, Clinical Psychologist reveals strategies for parents to initiate that conversation with kids.

Negative Messages At such an impressionable age, it is hard for the “bullied” to stand up for themselves. Getting the message that they are not “good enough”, children start to believe it. They are afraid of being judged as “weak” or being threatened, therefore, they don’t see the option of talking to their parents about it. To the bullied child, it feels like a lose-lose situation. Hence, it

Nov/Dec 2018

is of utmost importance to talk openly and to educate your child about it. This includes telling them about the four types of bullying: verbal—which involves teasing, writing mean messages, or name-calling, physical—which involves hitting, tripping, or breaking things, social— which could be spreading rumors and leaving someone out, and cyber bullying, which includes posting hurtful comments/pictures/videos.

The Conversation Parents need to send the message loud and clear that bullying is unacceptable and no matter what the bully threatens, your child must never keep it a secret from you. Extinguishing bullying is as important as being able to identify it. To achieve this, it is necessary to create an empathetic and safe environment, where a child can immediately approach

an adult for help. Taking assertive, quick, and organized action towards the bully sets an example to keep other bullies at bay. It also encourages bystanders and other bullied children to come forward. Parents and institutions must make it a goal to be vigilant and protect their children from this damaging experience.

THE HIDDEN SIGNS OF BULLYING PARENTS SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR

• Unexplained bruises or random complaints of body aches or illnesses so as to avoid school. • Books being torn or things missing. • Sudden mood swings, increased irritability, crying or the desire to “be left alone”. • Sudden nightmares, crying while sleeping, or even bed-wetting is a red flag. • Not wanting to go to school nor wanting to talk about school anymore. • Changes in perception of self and ability—for example, sudden thoughts like “I’m a loser”. • Talk of suicide or self-destructive behavior. FITNESS IS A LIFESTYLE

“Fitness to me is a lifestyle and is everything from sleep to nutrition, as well as how many steps I walk during the day and the perfect balance between weight training and resistance training. This is because besides my own physical and mental wellbeing, I have to be a perfect role model to my three sons and millions of fans in order to inculcate the fact that there is no greater wealth than physical wellbeing.”

FINDING WAYS TO RELAX

“Yoga, dance, music, and watching lots of comedies, as well as playing with my sons ensure that I unwind for optimal physical and mental well-being. When it comes to stress and anxiety, there are two ways

to deal with it; either you become the victim or you take control. While it’s easier said than done, I have always believed in the mantra ‘move more, eat well, vent by talking, and sleep well’. This somehow has always worked for me, but of course, if stress or anxiety is starting to take a toll, consider talking to a mental health professional."

SUPPLEMENTING NUTRITION

“It is best to try to obtain vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from food rather than relying on supplements unless diagnosed and prescribed by a registered physician. Instead, eat organic fruit, vegetables, fish, and other healthy foods which contain nutrients and other substances not found in a pill and will work synergistically to keep us healthy."

FOOD FOR THE SOUL “In my opinion, laughter is the best medicine and nourishment for the soul— and if music is added, it enables a full restoration of the soul. I love to laugh, watch comedies, and sing with my children and husband. I also practice a lot of chanting together with our sons.”

Look Good, Feel Good In most cases, looking good means feeling good, and there is no better state of mind than being confident and self-assured within oneself. In fact, research has shown that physical appearance is closely linked to confidence levels. Create a morning routine and take your time to get ready in order to put your best foot forward, which in turn will have a positive impact on your mindset for the rest of the day.

First Meeting

A well-dressed and groomed man is instantly seen as professional upon first impression and is subsequently taken more seriously than his "scruffy" counterparts. Showing up to a first meeting wearing a beautifully fitted outfit, hair well-groomed, and beard either stylishly trimmed or cleanly shaven will present self-assurance, which will ultimately be projected onto others. First impressions are important so make sure yours counts. H

Staying in Shape

We all know that exercise is vital to keeping a healthy body, but it is equally important for creating a healthy mind. When we work out, our brains release endorphins, which is the "happy hormone". Try going for a light jog, swim, or even have a few rounds on a punching bag; it will provide you with an added dose of energy, a positive outlook for the day, and of course, help maintain weight.

Leveraging the Power of Social Media

The Content Creators Conference was recently held in Dubai to provide insight to help professionals and brands lift their content to new heights. William Gardner, the Founder of Content Creators Conference and CEO of US based 8 Marketing discusses leveraging the power of social media as an effective marketing tool.

Nov/Dec 2018

70

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT PLATFORMS OUT THERE, WHICH IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE MARKETING TOOL? “I feel like there is a real gap in the market from what we have seen. We usually compete against large PR firms that don’t really do digital; there might be a digital team, but it’s not their specialty. Then we compete against smaller agencies that run campaigns clients tell them to run, but they won’t be able to help shape and guide you strategically in any way. We also see a lot of social media management companies who don’t create

their clients content. We are really closing this gap, doing A to Z in one company and lend strategic planning, something I don’t see a lot of in this space in this region." WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CONTENT CREATION STRATEGY? “Consistency. Too many people start strong, but you have to stay consistent and stay in front your audience across all platforms as many get stuck on one platform. You never know where and how someone will consume your content. Be consistent across all platforms."

WHAT ROLE DO INFLUENCERS PLAY IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS? “Some brands really benefit from the influencers and some don’t know how to execute even if they get the influencers to post for them. The key is still marketing and to follow all other steps for a digital campaign. The brands and the influencers need to see the value in each other and still execute their collaboration like a marketing campaign and follow all the fundamental steps in a digital marketing campaign.” H

FOUR RESULTS DRIVEN TREATMENTS GUARANTEED TO

PERFECT YOUR

SKIN

While expensive face creams can make your skin look good on the surface, for the festive season, deeper treatments that work from within the skin are required. Here are four facial treatments guaranteed to give you flawless skin just in time for the festive season.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

A known favorite of Kim Kardashian, this FDA-approved therapy combines ingredients extracted from the patient’s own blood to stimulate the regrowth of elastin and collagen. This in turn, plumps up sagging areas and gently fills in fine lines. After a small volume of blood is taken from the patient’s arm, using a patented processing system, the sample is separated to concentrate the platelets and fibrin into a Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM). This is injected just below the surface to stimulate cell growth. Results are noticeable immediately, but become more obvious over time.

Pixel Fractional Laser

An ablative laser which resurfaces the skin, Pixel creates thousands of microscopic perforations on the skin, but the skin remains intact. The results can be noticeable after just one treatment and is ideal in the treatment of hyper pigmentation, sun damage, scarring, and fine lines. Results are often seen after one treatment however, the number of sessions will be dependent upon the areas being treated.

Ultherapy

A gold standard treatment, Ultherapy goes deep into the skin and gently heats the skin’s tissue to tighten, firm, and lift loose skin without injury to the surface. This one hour treatment leverages the body’s own healing response to gradually restore the skin and its underlying tissue and over time, new collagen is created. With just one treatment, the regenerative process is triggered, but the full effect is gradual over the course of a few months.

Photo Facial

This 20-minutes treatment is ideal for individuals suffering from age spots, broken capillaries, or minor pigmentation. A non-ablative laser is used to target red and the brown colors on the face to give a fresh, rejuvenated look. Best results are for people with lighter complexions and it is not suitable for darker skin colors. While the treatment is associated with minor discomfort, there is no pain involved.

STAY OF THE MONTH

Check yourself into Fairmont Dubai for a staycation that indulges your wellness needs while still keeping you in the midst of the buzz of Dubai. Nov/Dec 2018

EXCLUSIVITY

Old world luxury and an ambiance of exclusivity is what we felt when we checked in at the exclusive Fairmont Gold Lounge on the 33rd floor of the hotel. This tranquil and expansive lounge is exclusively accessible only for Gold Suite clients and had a friendly staff waiting to check us in seamlessly and quickly. Within the lounge, we received welcome drinks and noshed on sushi and nigiri. Here the servers know you by name and it exudes a very ‘members only’ ambiance.

The Suite

My Fairmont Gold One Bedroom Suite was an extension of the hotel’s ambiance— sophisticated and understated elegance. Done up in neutral tones, the living room was more than comfortable and provided expansive views overlooking Dubai’s glittering skyline. With an executive style desk, there was a variety of herbal teas and coffee on offer in addition to an espresso machine. The exclusive Butler service is one of the best features included for the Fairmont Gold category rooms and is available 24/7 to help with unpacking, booking dinner reservations, and even helped book my spa experience.

The kids had a separate Fairmont View room and enjoyed the full amenities.

Dining While there have been one-off dark dining experiences in the UAE, Noire is purpose-built for this concept. At the time of booking, we were asked about allergies and dietary restrictions. After being led into a dimmed lounge area, we were all instructed about seating and dining, and then guided one-byone into pitch blackness. Servers wore night vision goggles and were on

hand to help. After a few minutes, I felt my other senses heightening—the butter served with the bread, for example, was more delicious than I had ever tasted. Being in pitch blackness was actually empowering because we had to rely on other senses during this surprise three-course meal. The revealing moment came afterwards when Chef Rakitha Wijesiriwardana presented the threecourse meal that we had consumed. This was not just a dining experience, but an unforgettable must for your bucket list.

Wellness

The Fairmont has a very large full service spa where I was booked for a 60-minutes aromatherapy massage. Upon arrival, I relaxed in one of their three Romanesque styled Jacuzzis as well as the steam room. My masseuse discussed my problem areas and applied the specific oil to work the tension in my shoulders. The hushed silence, combined with the flickering candles, and the aromatherapy oils lulled me into a deep sleep. Afterwards, I left the spa feeling rejuvenated and completely refreshed.

The Gold Lounge

We enjoyed breakfast at the Gold Lounge which included live cooking and an expansive selfserve buffet showcasing Arabic mezze items and a healthy assortment of fresh breakfast foods. We tucked into fresh waffles and pancakes, as well as eggs cooked according to our specifications. There was also a large assortment of breakfast sides from all over the world. We also had our afternoon high tea here which was served in an intimate coffee table styled setting with different kinds of petit fours and

sandwiches along with several kinds of herbal teas and coffee.

In the Middle of the Buzz

The Fairmont provides complementary shuttle service to Dubai’s best hotspots—Dubai Mall, Kite Beach, and Downtown. For families, there are two pools— Sunrise and Sunset, as well as a kid’s pool, located on the rooftop adjacent to their Turkish restaurant Dokuz. There are also 12 other dining and entertainment venues. H

Details: Price for Fairmont Gold One Bedroom Suite is AED 1,200 per night; the Fairmont View Room is AED 750 per night. Both rates include breakfast. Access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge is AED 150 per person per night.

ACHIEVER IN THE SPOTLIGHT Saudi entrepreneur Eman Almahri is a jewelry designer, Founder and CEO of Harmesh Jewelry—an innovative and luxury diamond jewelry brand for the modern woman. She discusses Arab talents in the region and why Dubai is the ultimate place for nurturing such talents. Nov/Dec 2018

78

THE RISE OF ARAB WOMEN Arab talent is on the rise in the eyes of the global market and especially in the world of fashion. These fabulous women are literally making waves on a global level, breaking stereotypes, and empowering women and girls around them. In my opinion as a young Arab woman entrepreneur, I strongly feel that these women have set a great example of paving the way for young entrepreneurs. DUBAI’S ROLE Dubai is a perfect place for women to start their own business. The government of the UAE is very supportive and is helping women in all ways possible to establish themselves as successful professionals. The government has set standards of support for women in business ventures as an attempt to engage all of its citizens equally in the economic and social development of this rapidly changing and developing country.

STRIKING A BALANCE At this point in time, it is really difficult for me to have a perfect work-life balance. Starting and running a business is hard work, some nights I don’t sleep much, and the more your business grows, the tougher the decisions become and more people depend on you. But if you are doing what you love, it’s all good. Really, you can only strive for harmony as defined by you at any given point in time. The key is to do what you love and only do it because you want to do it – because that will make long work hours or tough assignments fly by – and your friends and family will understand you are doing what feeds your soul. Having said that, family and friends are the most important things in the world – your ultimate support system.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE I believe women can be successful -if they are dedicated and focused on what they want. Nothing is impossible – if you believe in the power of your dreams. The future that every individual has is determined by their own efforts and will. EMERGING TALENT The region is offering plenty of diverse up-andcoming emerging talent. As designers, we’re starting to benefit gradually from the support systems surrounding us including various fashion houses, schools, and workshops. With pop-up activations and fashion platforms for emerging designers - I see Dubai working more and more to provide for its talent. And it’s just the beginning. H

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

The question: I have recently developed plantar fasciitis for which I am taking medication. Is there anything else I can do to alleviate the pain? Cristina Craciun, Senior Physiotherapist responds, “Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia which is the layer that covers the foot arch muscles and tendons. Apart from taking antiinflammatories, rest and ice the foot arch. Change your shoes and avoid extremely rigid or soft shoe soles. Select shoes with proper arch support. Wearing a night splint will help speed up the healing process. Stretch your calves, hamstrings, and foot several times a day. Foam roll the same muscle groups. Also, try to lose excess weight if you had a sudden gain. This condition could last for months if left untreated. Consult a physiotherapist for a professional assessment to find and tackle predisposing factors including a weak core, flat feet, or pronation. Special orthotics could be suggested or even a visit to the podiatrist. You will be advised on appropriate activity modification and home exercises including strengthening and stretching."

ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)

The question: When is the earliest that ADHD can be diagnosed? My 11-month-old son does not act like his siblings; he avoids eye contact and rarely interacts willingly. Dr. Salman Wahid, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist responds, “ADHD affects children and can continue in adulthood. In this condition, children will have difficulty paying attention, may have hyperactivity, and will engage in impulsive behaviors. There are no set criteria to diagnose infants and toddlers with ADHD. The average age of diagnosis is around seven years, with earliest diagnosis given around five years. Some of the symptoms include lack of attention and focus, inability to listen, and follow directions, easily bored, forgetful, fidgety, impulsive, inability to wait for a turn, inability to play quietly, disruptive, impulsive, and low frustration tolerance. The description of a child not making eye contact can be due to excessive shyness, hearing issues, speech issues, or learning issues. The best advice at this stage is to make an appointment with the primary care doctor to rule out common medical issues, and if there is a suspicion of psychiatric illness, then have the child evaluated by a child psychologist/psychiatrist/speech pathologist/pediatric neurologist, depending on the issue at hand."

TREATMENTS FOR DARK CIRCLES The question: No matter what I do I can't get rid of my under-eye circles. What causes this and what are some non-invasive techniques I can use safely to get rid of this once and for all?

Dr. Sanjay Parashar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon responds, “Under-eye circles is a very common problem with young men and women. Under-eye circles have three important componentsdark/pigmented eyelid skin which is normally thinner than cheek skin and the demarcation may be significant. Also, resorption of fat and cheek drop is also a common cause and may occur in individuals as young as 23 to 24 years of age. The third cause is underlying veins that give a bluish and dark discoloration to the area. Hereditary tendencies are one common denominator in all people with under-eye circles. Other factors include lifestyle, irregular sleeping hours, smoking, or sudden weight loss. Treatment depends upon the problem; it may require a combination of treatments such as skin peeling and topical creams to improve the color. The use of a vitamin C serum can also help in improving the color. Carboxytherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that delivers carbon dioxide gas under the skin and promotes increased oxygen supply. More long lasting results can be achieved by using filler material to fill the depression in the tear trough area. Fat grafting is also a very useful procedure that adds volume and reduces the visibility of veins through the skin. H

Ceramic Filling A New, Long-lasting Dental Filling with the Best Outcome Tooth filling is used to return a damaged tooth back to its normal form and function. There are many types of fillings, but here Dr. Hussain Al Saleh, Founder and Specialist Prosthodontist and Oral Implantologist at Oris Dental Center in Dubai, UAE discusses the ceramic filling procedure. Ceramic filling is a custommade dental restoration that covers the chewing surface of the tooth. It can be fabricated in the dental lab or by using a computerized milling machine inside the clinic. These customized restorations are called inlay and onlay and are considered to be the ideal alternative for conventional silver and composite fillings. The first step is general anesthesia for the teeth, and then, in case of using the lab, a dental impression

must be taken for the preparation of the temporary restoration. The third step is determining the shade of natural teeth. After that, the dentist prepares the tooth by removing the old restorative and removing any decay, then filling the deep holes or missing corners of the tooth. The next step requires a digital or conventional impression of the prepared tooth, and lastly, the final restoration result applies, as well as cementation, adjustment, and polishing. Dr. Hussain adds that the result is achievable within one day when using CAD/ CAM or it may take two visits in the case of dental lab work. It is important to note that inlays and onlays can last up to 30 years longer than any other type of filling.

Ceramic filling can suit all patients and is highly recommended by dentists based on many factors: it requires one session only when using CAD/ CAM, fewer anesthesia injections are required, it is a metal-free restoration, lasts longer than any other type of filling, and requires minimal removal of the tooth structure and maximum preservation of a healthy tooth structure. Ceramic filling is stronger due to preservation of the intact natural tooth structure. Ceramic filling may cause some disadvantages depending on the patient’s teeth condition. For example, the ceramic can chip and require a replacement; however, avoiding bad habits will help to ensure that the onlay/inlay will last longer. The ceramic filling is high in price due to the quality of material and high technology involved. Dental care can sometimes be a forgotten part of our healthy lifestyle; however, its’ importance is nothing less than caring about the rest of our body. Plus, it is necessary to always choose a dentist who puts a special emphasis on the comfort of his patients. H

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) COULD BE THE KEY TO ERADICATING TUBERCULOSIS (TB)

His Excellency Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama told the audience on the first day of the UN World Data Forum 2018 – organized by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority (FCSA) at Dubai’s Madinat Jumeirah on October 22-24 – that although AI is quite controversial, it can have many positive outcomes for millions of people across the world. The technology could be used to prevent, cure, and diagnose specific diseases, H.E. asserted, focusing specifically on TB, which kills more people than any other disease across the world. TB affects more than 10 million people, killing around 2

million every year, he said. “It’s a big weight on our shoulders, we need to cure the disease and can deploy technology to do so. We, in the office of the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in the UAE Government are working on an algorithmic solution that can be used in the detection and diagnosis of TB from chest X-rays,” H.E. Al Olama said. “You can upload any image of a chest X-ray and the system will identify if a person has the disease. The algorithm determines the probability of Pulmonary TB infection. The disease is preventable

and curable and there is no excuse for not tackling it,” H.E. asserted, noting that the biggest challenge was that a lot of people did not know they had the disease or did not show any symptoms of having it. “If AI is deployed, the detection process becomes a lot simpler. A team goes to an area thought to have TB and use an AI-powered tool to screen people en masse. X-rays are put into an algorithm and it identifies who has TB and who does not. The system offers many advantages: firstly,

it allows us to pinpoint specific geographies where TB is spreading. Also, a physical doctor is not required, which significantly reduces costs. Last but not least, the system offers a much more efficient diagnosis, allowing for more certainty that the infection in question is indeed TB," H.E. said. He concluded by stating that once developed, the algorithmic solution will be open to any nation to use in the fight against Tuberculosis, adding that nations would have to work together to finally tackle the world’s disease burden.

ECO-FRIENDLY UAE CONSUMERS HAVE FILTERED WATER ON TAP

Today’s eco-friendly UAE consumer insists on reusable cups, avoids plastic straws, and delivery food cutlery, and is now more likely to have filtered water on tap in the home and office. Just as the last year has seen the rise of initiatives like

less, plastic-free system which gives instant boiling, chilled, still and sparkling water from a single undersink unit, have achieved double digit growth. Much of that is down to growing environmental awareness, according to Culligan, a global leader in water treatment #ZeroWasteUAE, which aims to reduce waste and for homes, offices and industries, which promote a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, acquired the Zip Water brand last year. “We’re filtered water systems seeing a significant shift have also been enjoying in consumer behavior a boom in popularity. Over the past 12 months when it comes to the use of plastic, recycling Middle East sales of the waste and overall efforts Zip HydroTap, a bottle-

to become more socially and environmentally responsible,” said Marco Seghi, Service Director of Culligan Middle East. “When Culligan acquired Zip Water, we knew the technology would work especially well in this region because people here understand the need to drink plenty of water throughout the day. But the fact that consumers are becoming more and more eco-friendly has certainly been a key factor behind the double digit sales growth. "
