Hello!

Welcome to our spring issue of HEALTH magazine! In lieu of International Women’s day on March 8, our issue is dedicated to all women out there who are working hard and juggling many responsibilities with aplomb. On February 26, 2018, HEALTH magazine, along with the DHA organized the second Annual Health Awards in Dubai which honored excellence across various fields in wellness and health. The event was a huge success and was attended by the top health and wellness experts as well as stellar guests and celebrities from around the world. Women have made strides in education and jobs, yet still sometimes neglect their

own health. For this, we have a feature on ‘A Woman’s Guide to Wellness’ with tips for women to safeguard their health. Also, a feature on diabetes in children because as we all know, diabetes is a rising concern among children in this part of the region. Also, we have a health tips feature just for all women over 50 out there. I also spoke with Muneera Al Hubail, an Emirati CrossFitter who trains and competes in local and regional competitions. She has inspired Emirati women to pursue health and fitness as part of their daily lives. Another element of wellness is emotional wellbeing and for this, there is a feature on how fear may be holding you back from achieving your highest potential and how to overcome this. There is a whole lot more in this issue, so until next time, happy reading!

ARAB HEALTH 2018

A FOCUS ON

CHILDHOOD LEUKEMIA

HEALTH met with Dr. Rabi Hanna, a specialist in pediatric hematology, oncology, and blood & bone marrow transplantation in the United States to understand more about childhood leukemia and some early signs to look out for.

Early Signs to Watch for In Childhood

According to Dr. Hanna, pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death in children from a disease perspective. He elaborates, “The most common childhood cancer is leukemia. Pediatric cancer is very different from adult cancers in that the causes are not environmentally related, nor diet related, so I always tell the families of the patients that it is not something mom or dad did, but rather leukemia tends to be related to the genes.”

Mar/Apr 2018

24

Some early signs of leukemia, tells Dr. Hanna, include the following: • Persistent fever for more than seven days. • Cough or runny nose, enlarged lymph nodes that don’t decrease in size even from antibiotics. • Weight loss. • Night sweats. Leukemia doesn’t hide itself and makes itself apparent very fast. He reiterates, “I would always advise parents to take their child to the pediatrician if he/she is exhibiting any of these symptoms. A simple blood test may show abnormal blood cells in leukemia.”

Primary Treatment The survival rate of leukemia in children is above 90 percent, reveals Dr. Hanna and most children respond well to chemotherapy. “The chemotherapy tends to be a long journey and is usually done as multiple combinations of chemotherapy for a long period of time. Most children respond well and do not require a bone marrow transplant, but 10 percent do relapse and may need a bone marrow transplant, he says.

Dubai Making its Mark in Medical Tourism HEALTH SPEAKS TO DHIRAJ JOSHI, PARTNER FOR HEALTHCARE STRATEGY AT PWC MIDDLE EAST ABOUT WHAT GIVES DUBAI THE EDGE OVER OTHERS IN MEDICAL TOURISM. WORKING WITH A REGIONAL GOVERNMENT ENTITY “PwC basically designed some part of the medical tourism strategy for a regional government entity. It is an operational plan, but the front end of the plan is the strategic view that Dubai can find its place.”

Mar/Apr 2018

26

ACHIEVING ITS GOAL “I think if you look at some of the data sources, you would see that Dubai has already achieved a lot. Basically, what had been slated to be achieved by 2020 has already been achieved. But I think Dubai continues to move forward and PwC continues to support the regional government entity in order to upscale the target, as well as support them in helping reach that target. By 2020, I don’t see any reason why Dubai cannot achieve its targets and maybe even surpass them significantly.”

WHY DUBAI “We have worked with lots of medical organizations and patients also to try and understand why they have chosen Dubai. One part is that Dubai has been chosen because of its destination profile as a brand, as an experience, and the connectedness of the healthcare experience to the tourism. I would say it is already achieved, but it continues to grow in that direction.”

DUBAI’S EDGE “One of the biggest things we have seen with the work we have done is that patients don’t come to Dubai for treatment alone. When they are travelling abroad, they are usually travelling within a social setting, so they will travel with an escort to help them and perhaps two or three other family members. There is also a sense of ‘whether I am feeling well afterwards.’ So, what Dubai does is that it gives you that experience that a lot of people don’t get when they travel to other places. Dubai is associated with wellness and happiness, so it’s not just the treatment; it’s

beyond the treatment that you get here in Dubai. This is a very specific positioning that Dubai has.” THE VALUE OF EDUCATION “One of the measures that groups (such as Thumbay Group) have been focusing on is education. In fact, one of the big things in the past few years is the ability to produce indigenous manpower which can help the nation build its DNA. This is a great initiative and in the UAE, it is evident that Thumbay Group has carved out a space for this.” H

A WOMAN’S GUIDE TO WELLNESS Women have made strides in education and careers, yet still sometimes neglect their own health. Here are some simple, yet effective tips to boost your sense of wellbeing today.

Mar/Apr 2018

28

Tip 1

reduce bad cholesterol levels in your blood.

Stop Eating Diet Food

Tip 3

Tired of avoiding carbs and constantly eating non-fat diet foods? Remember, eating weight loss foods doesn’t necessary mean these are good for your health as these are often highly processed, have more sugar, but less fat content, and can be very expensive. Instead, consume healthy foods in the proper portion sizes to help make huge improvements in your overall health.

Tip 2 Get More MUFAs in Your Diet

Think all fats are bad? Think again--monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFAs are fats and oils. Found in foods such as olives and olive oil, canola oil, nuts and nut oils, seeds and seed oils, grape seed oil, soy bean oil, and avocados, MUFAs can help

Slow Down

Now is a good time to slow down and learn to listen to your inner voice to transform and correct imbalance in your body. By meditating/praying, you observe yourself; physically, mentally, and emotionally and learn to understand, acknowledge, accept, surrender, and trust what you are currently experiencing is for the moment only.

Tip 4 Take a Deep Breath

Breathing practices enhance and revitalize our body in the physical and mental plane. Once we consciously direct our awareness to the incoming/ outgoing breath, we can see how the breath changes with the fluctuations of the mind.

Tip 5 Get a Good Night’s Sleep

It’s during our deepest sleep

known as Delta sleep that our heart rate and respiration rate slow down and the body becomes immobile. The brain waves slow down to Delta brain wave frequency which is when growth hormone or hGH levels increase, and result in the rejuvenation of the muscular, immune, and skeletal systems.

Tip 6 Take Care of Your Bones

As women achieve maximum bone mass around the age of 30, it’s crucial to have enough intake of vitamin D and calcium during that period.

Tip 7 Get Your Vitamin D

Experts stress that the only reliable natural source is exposure to the sun for about 30 minutes every day or alternatively, taking a good multivitamin with 400 IU of vitamin D is a practical way to get enough of it.

CHEMICALS AROUND YOU Avoid renovating your home in pregnancy as you may be exposed to toxic chemicals. According to Francesca Naish, founder of The Jocelyn Centre for Natural Fertility Management and Holistic Medicine in Sydney, this includes not only industrial chemicals, but also cleaning chemicals in your home. Medicine, found the risk of not conceiving for 12 months (the usual definition of infertility), was 55 percent higher for women drinking one cup of coffee per day and 100 percent higher for women drinking one and one-half to three cups of coffee per day. LIMIT FISH INTAKE While fish is chock-full of omega fatty acids, the Food and Drug Administration and The Environmental Protection Agency issued joint guidelines in March 2004 advising women who are pregnant, nursing, or even considering having children to eat no more than two servings of fish each week in order to protect developing babies from high levels of potentially brain-damaging mercury.

COFFEE CONSUMPTION Few of us would pass up a cappuccino, but caffeine consumption equivalent to more than two cups of coffee per day has been linked to tubal

disease and endometriosis— both which can cause female infertility. A study of 1,909 women by Drs.Larry Dulgosz and Michael B. Brachs in the Yale University School of

TOO THIN Rose E. Frisch, author of “Female Fertility and the Body Fat Connection” describes how body fat links together food intake, diet, levels of exercise, and reproduction. For more than 30 years, Frisch has researched her finding that a critical body fat level in women is necessary for successful reproduction. H

Bone Mineral Density Test Osteoporosis is common in women over 50, and a key symptom is a tendency for bone fractures. If there are signs of early osteoporosis or it runs in the family, a DEXA bone scan can ascertain if she has the disease or is at risk for it.

Diabetes Screening If your sugar levels have been normal, undergo a diabetes screening test annually. If you have a genetic tendency for diabetes or are overweight, undergo this test more frequently.

Cervical Cancer Screening

Breast Cancer Screening Once a year, women over 50 should have their breasts examined by their gynecologist. This should check for any abnormalities and also, a mammography should be done annually as part of this checkup.

Every three years, women over 50 need to undergo a Pap test or both a Pap test and an HPV test every five years. However, if there are risk factors such as HIV infection or a previous abnormal screening, she should undergo a Pap test annually.

Hypertension & Blood Pressure For women with typically normal blood pressure, it should be checked at least once annually. If it is at or above 120/80, have it checked more frequently. H (Credit: Dr. Sanjida Ahmed, cell biologist)

At night though, I try and cut back on heavy carbs and oil for me is a big no-no as well as sugar. Despite the fact I

WORK LIFE BALANCE “I am an extremist, so there are some days where I literally don’t get out of the bed for the entire day. Then I have other days where I am on my toes continuously. I actually allow myself to do this; the balance for me is around three days of activity and three days of less activity.”

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FOODS “For instance, now that I am in the UAE, I would opt for some fresh hummus and pita bread instead of a heavy meal. You just have to pick and choose the right food. Wherever I go, I try and choose the best and healthiest option available.”

HEALTH AWARDS 2018 “I think Health Awards, such as the one Thumbay Group is hosting on February 26 in Dubai, are really important because it really motivates people to be their best. Why should only filmstars get awards? Awards help encourage and motivate others to do their best and work harder. I think we should all thank Thumbay Group for such an excellent initiative.” H

Telltale Signs a Man Needs a

Health Check

1 Blood noticed in the stool, urine, or sputum may be an alarming sign, especially in middle-aged men. Even though in the majority of cases, the cause may be attributed to a benign illness, however, in certain cases it may be the earliest sign of cancer. Early treatment leads to a better prognosis.

While you may be healthy overall, there are some red flags you simply cannot afford to ignore. Here are four warning signs that all men should take seriously.

A significant weight change in a short period of time; whether it is gain or loss, must be further evaluated to rule out any significant underlying disease.

A lump in the groin, neck, the axilla, or the breast should prompt the patient to seek medical attention as soon as possible because it may indicate a serious health problem.

A nevus or any other skin lesion that begins to change color, grow in size, or starts to bleed easily must be checked as it may conceal skin cancer. H

What’s Ruining Your Sleep? We all know a good night’s sleep is paramount for good health, but sometimes we suffer from disrupted sleep, leaving us feeling unrested the next day. HEALTH presents sleep disruptors and how to correct them.

Are You Ignoring Exercise?

Those who actively partake in daily exercise are 65 percent less likely to feel groggy during the day. The reasons are that exercisers sleep longer, fall asleep faster, and have better quality sleep than nonexercisers. Instead: Be sure you exercise at the right time, which means no intense workouts in the night.

Are You Using Electronics in the Bedroom?

Your cell phone on your bedside table and your laptop on your bed can actually keep you awake. Not only do incoming alerts stimulate the brain, but the bright lights from screens can slow down the body’s production of melatonin which regulates sleep. Instead: Keep all gadgets and electronic items in a separate room and avoid using these at least two hours before bedtime.

Are You Drinking Coffee at Night?

As tempting at that post-dinner latte is to you, just say no to it at night. Remember that it takes

around six hours for just half of the caffeine that you drink to disappear from your body. Instead: Substitute coffee with warm milk infused with a pinch of turmeric which contains curcumin, and is known to have a slew of health benefits.

Are You Sleeping In?

By sleeping in late, even on weekends, you risk the body’s internal clock going haywire. This can make it more difficult to sleep the next night. Instead: Maintaining a regular sleep schedule - both during the week and on weekends - could boost not only the quality of your sleep, but also quantity. H

THE FACTS ABOUT CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING Mar/Apr 2018

40

Getting regular Pap smear tests is the best way to protect yourself from developing cervical cancer. Here are the most frequently asked questions about screening for cervical cancer. Q. What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a simple test to check your cervix to make sure it is healthy. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancerous cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated appropriately.

Q. What causes cervical cancer?

An infection with a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus) is the cause of almost all cervical cancers. HPV is very common; there are more than 100 different types of HPV. Two of these types are known to cause most of cervical cancer. Most people (four out of five) will have HPV at some time in their lives. In most cases, HPV clears up by itself within a few years. This means that most women who are infected with HPV do not develop cancer.

Q. How is a Pap smear done?

During the Pap test, the doctor will examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it. The cells are then placed on a slide or in a bottle of liquid and sent to a laboratory. The laboratory will check the sample to be sure that the cells are normal.

Q. When does a Pap smear need to be done?

The screening guidelines vary from country to country. In general, the Pap test is recommended for women from the age of 21 to 25 years, until 65 years of age. It can be done at a doctor’s clinic. Screening is typically recommended every 3 to 5 years as long as the results are normal. (Credit: Dr. Usha Sethi, specialist gynecologist)

Women Taking a Stand DESPITE HUGE ADVANCES IN SELFEMPOWERMENT, MANY WOMEN STILL QUIETLY, AND SOMETIMES UNKNOWINGLY, ACCEPT EMOTIONAL ABUSE FROM A PARTNER, A FRIEND, OR FAMILY MEMBER, WHICH CAN TAKE A TOLL OVER TIME. READ ON TO LEARN MORE….

Mar/Apr 2018

44

The Signs

• Using unacceptable language including name calling, playing mind games, making someone feel insecure/ guilty or telling lies. • Misusing technology by sending unwanted text messages, breaking into someone’s social networking profile, email, or cell phone. • Exclusion by controlling what someone does or where she goes, limiting outside involvement and even isolating someone from their friends or family.

The Impact

Quite often, emotional abuse is very subtle, but over time, can eventually ebb away at a person’s self-esteem. According to Dr. Raymond Hamden, a clinical and forensic psychologist, it can also take a huge toll on a person’s health and wellbeing as it has a range of negative effects on the recipient. Emotionally, it can impact the person’s eating habits which could result in an eating disorder. Psychologically, it can cause feelings of isolation, anger, depression, anxiety, hurt, and stress. Additionally, physical ailments can also be experienced such as

headaches, constipation, stomach pain, insomnia, and fatigue. In fact, even diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease have been linked to emotional abuse as a result of extreme and extended emotional stress.

Putting a Stop to It Recognizing abuse is the first step in ending it. When the victim is able to see that she is in the wrong and 'this cannot go on,' they are half way to saying 'stop this behavior.' The victim must trust their own feelings and perceptions. If someone is doing something that is harming you, he/she must seek help. In most cases, it is important to realize that the abusive party cannot change, so either get out of the relationship or start utilizing your energy to change yourself and the way in which you react to and handle the situation differently. Is Fear Holding You Back? ON THE ONE HAND, FEAR CAN SERVE AS A MOTIVATING FACTOR AND MAY DRIVE US TO STEP OUTSIDE OF OUR COMFORT ZONES AND TRY NEW THINGS. OR IT CAN BE THE VERY THING HOLDING US BACK IN LIFE AND CREATING A SENSE OF FEELING STUCK. HEALTH FINDS OUT HOW FEAR CAN HOLD YOU BACK FROM BEING THE BEST YOU CAN BE. Unresolved Fears According to Christine Kritzas, a counseling psychologist, unresolved childhood fears can leave an adult struggling with upsetting emotions and memories, and anxiety that persists over time. “Suppressing difficult emotions stemming from childhood memories can have significant and long-lasting effects on us as adults,” she says. “When childhood fears are not resolved, a sense of helplessness and fear carries over into adulthood, which may have a negative impact on one’s emotional functioning at present.”

Tips for Coping with Fear Effectively 1. Awareness is keyWhen we create awareness and acknowledge our fears, we are one step closer to dealing with them. 2. Identify your triggers Know which situations you are most likely to experience difficult emotions in so you will be better equipped when facing them. 3. Take small actionable steps towards overcoming your fears - Graded exposure to specific fears can assist us in confronting them. If you’re fearful of spiders, then challenging yourself to first view images of spiders may be the first

step towards overcoming that fear. 4. Pick activities that challenge you - Make a list of a few things that you would like to do, but you are too scared to try. For example, doing karaoke, going skydiving, or speaking to a stranger; and start with the least threatening activity on your list and tackle the rest later. 5. Attach meaning to why it is that you would like to challenge yourself and overcome that fear - Understand what it is that you will gain by stepping out of your comfort zone; for example; “I will feel more confident if I am able to engage in public speaking”.

6. Surround yourself With individuals who are supportive of you overcoming your fears. 7. Visualization is a powerful tool in overcoming one’s fears - Envision yourself being courageous and confronting your fears; that way you will feel more confident when faced with them. 8. Adopt a growth mindset - Understand that overcoming one’s fears is a journey and not always a destination. Celebrate the small successes along the way and acknowledge the time, effort, courage, and perseverance that it often takes in reaching those smaller milestones. H (Credit: Christine Kritzas)

NECK AND SHOULDER ROTATION Nearly all the signals running from our brain to the rest of our bodies go through the neck and add to this, an uncomfortable office chair that you’re stuffed into for eight hours. Women also have weaker cervical flexors, which makes it imperative to release the stress in these areas every two hours. The best part is you can do these basic movements even when you’re sitting in your office chair.

Upward Hand Pose and Standing Lateral Stretch

These upward and lateral stretches are a very effective way to decompress the spine which has been subjected to constant compression by being seated for most of the day. These stretches realign your spine and correct your posture, all while giving you instant relief from any soreness you experience.

Standing Forward Fold As

you fold forward, your trunk inverts, and the blood rushes down to your head, which immediately revitalizes your mind. A forward fold also assists deeper exhalation, which in turn, leads to releasing more of the accumulated stress in your body. The entire spine also relaxes in this posture. However, avoid this posture if you’ve had any abdominal, spinal, or thoracic surgery in the past six months.

Half Wheel Pose

A backward bend; this posture opens up the chest cavity, which helps you breathe in deeper, while strengthening your spine and

opening up the hip flexors as well, and is another great way to realign and open up your body.

Breathing Exercises (Pranayamas)

While most Pranayamas are effective stress busters, the best among them are alternate nostril breathing starting with the left side (Chandra Nadi Shuddhi) and humming like a bee (Bhramari). While Chandra Nadi Shuddhi activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation, the vibrations that Bhramari create in your mind drown out all other noise and recharge your brain. FIVE TOXIC WORK HABITS

GETTING IN THE WAY OF YOUR SUCCESS

Mar/Apr 2018

50

All of us want to succeed and do well in our careers; yet sometimes one small toxic habit could be that obstacle in the way of a potential promotion. HEALTH reveals more.

Habit 1: You Gossip and Backstab to Get to the Top If gossiping and backstabbing are part of your office ‘game’, it’s time to stop. Not only does gossip hurt the people involved, it reflects very negatively and ultimately, can make you seem unprofessional, no matter how hard you work. Habit 2: You Pass the Buck If you constantly say ‘that’s not my job’ or ‘I wasn’t responsible for that’, you not only hinder office co-worker relationships, you are creating an atmosphere of unprofessionalism. Habit 3: You Bring Personal Problems to the Office If you lament your partner’s bad habits to colleagues or discuss personal problems in the office washroom, it not only can negatively impact your work performance, but that of others too. Remember, everyone in the office has a job to do, so leave your

chit-chat for social occasions outside the office. Habit 4: You Complain Constantly From ranting about fluctuating air conditioning to moaning and groaning about the lack of parking; if all you are doing is complaining, you are infusing a sense of negative energy and toxicity into the workplace. This, over time, can make you and everyone around you feel anxious and unhappy. Habit 5: You Don’t Work as a Team Player Are you constantly looking for a colleague’s mistake to point out to your boss? It’s a fact that cohesion in the office makes a happier and more stable workplace. Rather than work as a loner, work as a team and reap the benefits of a more positive and happy workplace. H

Why You Need to Be Using

Serums SERUMS HAVE CREATED A BUZZ IN THE SKINCARE INDUSTRY AND MANY OF US HAVE A FAIR FEW LURKING AROUND IN OUR BEAUTY CABINETS. BUT THERE ARE STILL SOME INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE RELUCTANT TO SPEND ON ONE PRODUCT AS THEY’RE UNSURE OF ITS BENEFITS, OR HOW THEY SHOULD INCORPORATE A SERUM INTO THEIR SKIN CARE REGIME.

Mar/Apr 2018

52

1 2 3 4 5

HERE ARE FIVE THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT USING SERUMS THAT COULD CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT INVESTING IN ONE: They’re a targeted treatment Serums are liquid concentrates for certain active ingredients and they are used to target specific skin concerns such as dark spots, fine lines, pigmentation, and minimizing pores. The formula of serums is usually much lighter than moisturizers to help penetrate the deeper layers of skin and banish skin concerns from within. They’re not an alternative for moisturizer Serums are not alternatives for moisturizers as they do not contain the emollients found in creams nor do these provide the same level of hydration to the skin – so you would still need to pair serums with a moisturizer. However, serums do contain robust ingredients that complement and maximize the effects of moisturizers. The high price point is justified If you feel like you can’t justify the price of expensive serums; the good news is the high price is due to the inherent premium active ingredients such as stem cells, antioxidants, peptides, or vitamins – which provide fast and prominent results. They deliver fast results Due to the powerful ingredients and light formula of serums, you can usually notice results within two weeks from incorporating the serum into your skincare regime – however, it needs to be used at least twice daily. Only a few drops are needed Always remember that with serums, less is more as these contain concentrated ingredients and a few drops are more than enough for the entire face. H

Are You Pushing Yourself Too Hard During Your Workout? During our workout, it is imperative to always listen to your body as it gives us signals and will tell us if we are pushing ourselves enough or if we are holding back. The following are key points to consider when exercising.

Mar/Apr 2018

56

Stay hydrated – It is imperative to replace the fluids you lose through sweat. If you don’t, you could end up dehydrated or with heat exhaustion. A good rule of thumb is to drink two glasses of water about 15 minutes prior to your workout and another two glasses after you cool down. Be sure to drink during exercise too – a quick sip every 15 to 20 minutes will help you stay hydrated. Feed your muscles – To build and also repair muscle, you need a variety of protein, vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Eating protein helps build and maintain muscle, while fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals necessary for recovery. Carbs fuel your muscles so you feel full energy for your workout. Make exercise a habit – Once you get past the fear, it becomes part of your weekly activities. Exercise is proven to be a great stress buster, working out after a hard day’s work will help you unwind. Always warm up and cool down – It is important to warm muscles before an intense work out and get the blood flowing to prevent injury and cool down afterwards by gradually decreasing your pace. Once your muscles are warm, you will be surprised at how much more you can achieve in a workout.

Follow your warm up by stretching – This will help you get the most out of your exercise and stay flexible. Allow muscle recovery – Always take at least one day off between strength training to allow the muscles to repair.

Remember to work out safely – Muscle pain 12 to 14 hours after exercise is normal, but if you feel pain during an exercise or immediately after, then consult a professional as you may be causing an injury. H (Credit: Lisa Lazarus, fitness and health enthusiast)

INSPIRING WOMEN TO GET FIT Muneera Al Hubail is an Emirati CrossFitter who trains hard, competes in local and regional competitions, and inspires other Emirati women to pursue health and fitness as part of their daily lives. HEALTH meets Muneera to learn more about her fitness journey.

The Start

“It all began in 2014 when my friend told me about Crossfit Yas in Yas Marina that had just opened in Abu Dhabi. Back then, I was exercising regularly for three years and felt that I needed to change from general fitness because it wasn’t exciting. When I visited, I noticed the gym had no machines, which made me curious. I booked my appointment to try it and afterwards, I realized that this is what I wanted to do because there were so many things to learn and most importantly, it was fun.”

Specific Challenges

“When I first joined Crossfit Yas, many people thought that as an Emirati woman, I shouldn’t lift weights or hang from a bar because they thought it would make me bulky and less feminine. Others assumed it was a sport unsuitable for Mar/Apr 2018

women in general because of the intensity and nature of the movements. However, many of these misconceptions faded after I urged the people who questioned me to try it out.”

UAE Initiatives

“Our leaders believe that being a healthy individual leads to a healthy community. We have become a destination for big international competitions such as the Spartan Race and Dubai Fitness Championship. Many gyms, such as Vogue Fitness at Yas Marina, have adopted this UAE vision and have made it their mission to spread fitness among people. One of these initiatives is called Labour Fit, a fitness program for workers from different fields such as construction sites. This is just one of the many activities that the UAE is doing in order to lead a healthier, fitter community.”

Healthy Lifestyle

“As a competing athlete, my goals are focused on performance. Thankfully in Crossfit Yas, I’m always surrounded by the competition experience which I try to get as much of as possible. For example, I had to change my food habits because it had the biggest impact on the way I felt during training. Also, the mental and physical strengths that I gained from fitness have played a major role in improving my endurance and tolerance.” H

The Advantages to Having a Baby When You’re Older WITH MORE OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED TO WOMEN IN EDUCATION, CAREER, AND FAMILY PLANNING, THE NUMBER OF WOMEN OVER 40 GIVING BIRTH FOR THE FIRST TIME HAS ACTUALLY INCREASED GLOBALLY. HEALTH TAKES A LOOK AT SOME KEY ADVANTAGES FOR HAVING A BABY LATER IN LIFE.

REASONS

From increasing levels of education to ultimately securing a high salary, many women are delaying motherhood. Also, advances in medicine have helped future mothers suffering from chronic disease, sterility, or having the possibility of complications during pregnancy, and allowed these women to give birth to normal, healthy babies.

Mar/Apr 2018

62

ADVANTAGES

Probably the greatest advantage of waiting to have children in their forties is that women are emotionally and financially ready for conception. They had time to see the world, and are more likely to be secure financially. If she has been with her husband/partner for a while, the couple will have had the chance to get to know

each other in all sorts of circumstances. This will provide a solid foundation for raising a family. As an older mother, she is in a good position to make wise parenting decisions. Her life experiences mean she would feel more confident about her approach to child-rearing.

The income is likely to be higher, as she would have had time to establish herself in her career. She’ll probably go back to work more quickly, and at a higher level of pay than younger women. In the forties, often women who become first-time moms are less concerned with their own needs, and will be happy to focus on her child. H

child’s development, such as whether a child shows parents things by pointing to objects. Young children with autism often point to items they want, but do not point to show parents an item and then check to see if parents are looking at the item being pointed out. Diagnostic guidelines for autism: The American Association of Childhood and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) have established guidelines for diagnosing autism. The criteria are designed so a doctor can assess a child’s behavior relating to core symptoms of autism.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) lists five behaviors that warrant further evaluation, as below: • Does not babble or coo by 12 months. • Does not gesture (point, wave, or grasp) by 12 months. • Does not say single words by 16 months. • Does not say two-word phrases on his/her own by 24 months. • Has any loss of any language or social skill at any age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDD) recommends that all children be screened for autism by their family pediatrician three times by the age of three – at 9, 18, and 24, or 30 months.

Here are a few of the ways autism is diagnosed Behavioral assessments: Various guidelines and questionnaires are used to help a doctor determine the specific type of developmental delay a child has. Medical history: During the medical history interview, a doctor asks general questions about a

Clinical observations: A doctor may want to observe the developmentally delayed child in different situations. The parents may be asked to interpret whether certain behaviors are usual for the child in those circumstances. Developmental and intelligence tests: The AACAP also recommends that tests be given to evaluate whether a child’s developmental delays affect his/her ability to think and make decisions. H

How Secondhand Smoke Damages Your

Family’s Health Despite your efforts to lead your family into a healthy and clean lifestyle, if your spouse is smoking around you, there is a very strong chance your health will be impacted by secondhand smoke. HEALTH investigates more‌

Mar/Apr 2018

66

Grim Figures According to the World Health Organization, more than 600,000 non-smokers die every year from secondhand smoke. About 165,000 of these deaths occur in babies and children, who are particularly vulnerable to the harm caused by secondhand smoke because their lungs are still developing.

Dangers Secondhand smoke is basically smoke which isn’t directly inhaled, but is either exhaled by a smoker or comes from the lit end of a cigarette. This sort of smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including at least 70 that can cause cancer. According to Dr. Iyaad Hasan, a certified tobacco treatment specialist who leads a Smoking Cessation Program, when a pregnant woman is exposed to secondhand smoke, it endangers the life of her unborn baby, as well as her own health, adding, “Babies whose mothers are exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to die of sudden infant death

syndrome (SIDS) than those babies who are not exposed.”

In Pregnant Women The damage does not stop there. Dr. Hasan says that exposure to smoking is also known to cause ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. Ectopic pregnancy a condition in which the fertilized egg fails to move to the uterus and instead, attaches in the fallopian tube or to other organs outside the womb - almost always causes the fetus to die and poses a serious risk to the health of the mother.

In Children The dangers of exposure to tobacco do not stop at birth. Children who breathe in secondhand smoke are also at risk of developing chest and ear infections. And, for children with asthma, it can make attacks worse and more frequent. “Successfully kicking the tobacco habit has lifelong benefits for former smokers as well as their loved ones,” says Dr. Hasan. MODERATION IS KEY “I eat anything and everything in moderation. I am a huge foodie and I love to eat. But yes, I do work out for one and a half hours a day and I keep shaking up the workout patterns. For instance, I will do functional training for two months and then switch to weight training for two months. I keep changing it as the body stops reacting to a certain kind of exercise at a certain point. I believe you have to give your body a shock so its starts reacting again.”

HEALTH AWARDS INITIATIVES “I feel the Annual Health Awards is a great opportunity for meeting inspirational people who are doing great things in the fields of wellness and health. Health is the most important aspect of life because without good health, you cannot properly work, eat, or live normally. Optimal health is very necessary to live life to the fullest for all of us. And these kinds of awards, such as the Annual Health Awards by Health magazine, definitely promote the concept of wellness and health and highlight how important these are to leading a healthy lifestyle.” H

HEALTHY HABITS “I manage to sleep eight hours a night, sometimes even more. I sleep around midnight and then am up by about 8 am. I also take care of my skin and indulge in facials every now and then. I also use natural face packs at home such as yogurt, honey, and clay.”

QUALITY TIME “It’s pretty easy for me to maintain a work-life balance as I am getting into production these days. In this aspect of the business, we have a lot of people around to help out. If you are acting, it can become very hectic. But if you do about two to three films a year, you can manage to have quality time for family and friends.”

HELP WITH PREGNANCY ACHES AND PAINS

Mar/Apr 2018

70

Pregnancy is a wonderful time, but it can put a lot of physical stress on the body. As the fetus grows, the pregnant mother’s spine must deal with significant forward-pulling weight which can put extra stress on the joints. Fortunately, atlas orthogonal adjustments are highly effective and many people feel relief from their symptoms immediately after an adjustment. What is atlas orthogonal (AO)? Atlas orthogonal (AO) is completely safe for pregnant women. The adjustment process is easy and pain-free. An expectant mother would simply lie on her side and relax while the adjusting instrument does the work.

What is the procedure like? The doctor lines the instrument up just under the earlobe; it makes a small clicking sound and the adjustment is complete. An energy wave of calculated

force will have pushed the atlas bone back into position, allowing the whole spine to align properly and the nervous system to flow as it is meant to.

Does it hurt? The patient won’t have felt a thing. What’s more, these kinds of non-manipulative adjustments can have tremendous benefits for pregnant mothers.

Are there any other benefits?

your atlas is in place and your spine is well-adjusted, the fetus will have plenty of room to grow and both mother and baby will feel more comfortable, both during the pregnancy and labor. In addition, labor is generally shorter and less painful for a woman who is well aligned, since the baby has plenty of room and descends straight down with more ease. H (Written by: Dr. Tod Cahill, atlas orthogonal chiropractor)

Another huge benefit of prenatal AO adjustments is an easier labor and delivery. When

PREVENT DIABETES IN CHILDREN TODAY

Mar/Apr 2018

74

Diabetes is a rising concern among children in this part of the region. The good news is that because type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease, every choice you make as a parent plays an important role in keeping it at bay. Here are some ways to help.

Healthy Diet

Following a healthy diet from a young age is the key to a healthy adult life. It is important to incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods, and healthy fats to the diet. Avoid ready-made meals from the supermarket as these contain high levels of sugar.

Weight Gain

Parents need to keep track of the weight of their child. Be sure to have regular health checks if the child is prone to gaining weight. Early detection of diabetes can help cure the disease.

Physical Exercise

It is important to incorporate exercise into your child’s daily routine. In the UAE, summers might be too hot to send them outside to the playground, so instead, look for fun indoor activities.

Limit Sugary Food Intake

It is best to completely avoid the habit of consuming sugary products from a young age. Products like donuts, candies, chocolates, ice cream, and carbonated drinks have very high levels of sugar and if you discourage children from consuming these when they are

young, they are more likely to avoid them when they are older.

Read Food Labels

It is important to read food labels to understand the kinds of ingredients that are in the product. Sometimes, even when the label says, ‘No Sugar added’, they may have sugar hidden in ingredients like ‘Maize Starch’. It is best to teach your children to read food labels from a young age.

Avoid Juices

Packed fresh juices have high levels of sugar. Instead, encourage your children to consume whole fruits. (Written by: Meria Heikelä, Director Business Finland)

THE FACTS ABOUT

POSTNATAL DEPRESSION A BABY IS INDEED A BUNDLE OF JOY- BUT HAVING POST NATAL DEPRESSION CAN DEFINITELY PUT A DAMPER ON YOUR HAPPINESS. HEALTH REVEALS THE FACTS ABOUT POSTNATAL DEPRESSION. POSTNATAL DEPRESSION (PND) IS A DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS THAT OCCURS AFTER HAVING A BABY. IT CAN RANGE IN SEVERITY FROM A MILD AND NORMAL PERIOD OF MOOD DISTURBANCE TO A MORE EXTREME EPISODE.

PND is common and occurs in 10 to 15 percent of women. It often develops within the first month following childbirth. It may develop out of severe ‘baby blues.’ The symptoms of PND are very similar to those seen in ‘ordinary’ depression. These include feeling low, miserable, and tearful for no apparent reason. Sleep disturbance is part of looking after a new baby. However, in PND there may be additional problems in finding it hard to go to sleep, even though the mother is tired, or waking up early in the morning. Appetite is sometimes affected,

Mar/Apr 2018

with mothers not being interested in food. This can be a particular problem since new mothers need all the energy they can get to look after their babies. Anxiety frequently occurs in PND. This may take many forms; it could be feeling tense or on edge all the time. PND is more common in mothers who have previously had episodes of depression and also, PND is more common in mothers who have experienced stressful life events during the pregnancy, those who do not have support at home, and when the baby has been born with some complications or problems. Unfortunately, PND can interfere with day-to-day life. Some women feel unable to look after their baby, and others feel too anxious to leave the house or keep in touch with friends.

THE INITIAL TREATMENT IS COUNSELING AND IS BEST CARRIED OUT BY HEALTH PROFESSIONALS VISITING THE MOTHER AT HOME. HOME VISITS BY TRAINED COUNSELORS HAVE ALSO BEEN SHOWN TO IMPROVE BONDING BETWEEN THE MOTHER AND BABY.

IS EATING OUT TOO MUCH RUINING YOUR DIET? Mar/Apr 2018

78

Dubai has an endless list of cafes, eateries, fine-dining options, and even street food vendors almost everywhere you go. Add to this, the iconic Friday brunches loaded with treats and the convenience of home delivery of all kinds of food makes overeating very easy for anyone. To maintain your diet and still enjoy dining out, HEALTH presents key strategies to help.

Grab a Snack Always Make Time for Exercise

Find the exercise you enjoy doing and stick with it, no matter what. Whether you enjoy gym workouts with friends or quiet yoga on the beach, staying active is an easy way to ensure the goodies you eat don’t stick to your waistline. Remember, a daily morning walk for one hour can burn between 300 to 600 calories daily and is a fun way to get fresh air.

Is that afternoon slump getting you down? If you know you feel low in energy and tired by 3 pm, keep some healthy snacks ready to nibble on; granola, dried fruit, nuts, or fresh fruits are just some of the ways to satisfy hunger pangs without adding to your waistline.

Organize Your Time

Eating out should be an experience, not a necessity. Use your weekend to plan and prepare your weekday work lunches to avoid eating out. Cook pasta, chicken, and vegetables in bulk and be creative with fresh vegetable and fruit salads. The possibilities are endless. Having a readymade work lunch to grab and go can make eating healthy just a little easier.

Choose Healthy Options

If you still prefer ordering out while at the office, look for eateries that offer healthy options, including fresh salads. Lots of food delivery services these days are preparing healthy, yet delicious meals that can easily be delivered to your office and specify the exact calorie count.

The Weekend Splurge

Despite your week of discipline and healthy food, now it’s the weekend and the all-toofamiliar feeling for indulgence may creep back. Don’t beat yourself up over one big meal; after the meal, skip the next meal and eat lightly the next day to give your digestive system a break from the overload of heavy food. H

WORK, MEETINGS, TRAVEL, AND A SOCIAL LIFE - NO DOUBT, HEALTHY LIVING DOESN’T COME EASY. WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE AND PREPARATION, IT CAN BE ACHIEVED. PUT YOUR EXCUSES ASIDE AND TRY THE FOLLOWING TIPS.

Mar/Apr 2018

80

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

This is the number one rule. Ensuring you catch a minimum of seven hours every evening, is one of the most integral aspects of living a healthy lifestyle. Humans are the only species who purposefully deprive themselves of sleep. A person can survive longer without food than they can without sleep. It will also stop your body craving sugar and other bad foods and drinks, usually caused by being deprived of solid sleep.

DRINK ENOUGH WATER

Dehydration is one of the worst things you can do to your body. Ensure you always have water with you. Flavor it with lemon to help encourage you to drink if you aren’t the type who particularly enjoys the taste of water.

BE PREPARED

With busy lifestyles, people often don’t plan ahead. Ensuring you have healthy options at home or in the office, means fewer choices. Preparation eliminates the stress of deciding what to eat, allowing you to be in control of your cravings.

AVOID REFINED SUGAR OR SUGARY DRINKS Refined sugar is nothing short of a drug and should be avoided at all costs. It not only will cause you to put on weight, but also puts your body into a state where it becomes prone to sickness and exhaustion. This doesn’t apply to natural sugars found in carbohydrates from the likes of potatoes and fruit.

EAT SLOWLY

Don’t rush your meals. Give your body time to register the food you eat. Then if you are still hungry afterwards, eat more. Eating slowly will make your body aware that it is being fed and lessen your chances of overeating.

SUPPLEMENTATION HELPS IN LEADING A BALANCED LIFESTYLE AND HEALTHY NUTRITIONAL PLAN

Supplements such as vitamin C, glutamine, essential amino acids, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins D and B are some of the most important supplements that all of us should be taking on a daily basis. (Written by: Maxine Russell, co-founder of The Gym)

SHIFT YOUR

FOOD HABITS FOR BETTER HEALTH As women get older, their nutritional needs begin to shift and metabolism drops. Moreover, lean body mass decreases and menopause may start to kick in. There is also a higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels. Here are specific reasons to shift your nutritional needs once you hit your forties.

Mar/Apr 2018

82

Helps with Bone Strength We all know calcium is a potent mineral for bone strength along with vitamin D; calcium rich foods include yogurt, cottage cheese, and leafy greens. Vitamin D is found in fish, such as tuna and salmon, and in some fortified foods. Your body also can synthesize it in almost 15 minutes of direct exposure to sunlight.

Promotes Healthy Skin A healthy diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables can help keep your skin looking firm and give you a radiant, natural glow. Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C, E, and A can fight the molecules that harm skin cells and cause signs of aging. Some of the best food sources are broccoli, kiwi, citrus fruits, bell peppers, papaya, parsley, and strawberries. These antioxidants can lessen skin damage

from ultraviolet rays and slow the breakdown of collagen, a protein in the skin.

To Help with Intestinal Changes Fluctuations in ovarian hormones may contribute to belly bloating and sluggish intestines. Some women develop lactose intolerance as they age, so switching to dairy-free alternatives would be best.

To Boost Heart Health According to the National Institute of Health, heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. Among the best nutrients for heart health are omega-3 fatty acids, found especially in salmon, sardines, and herring. Plant-based omega-3s are found in flaxseeds and walnuts. Add servings of these foods with fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and reduce your consumption of unhealthy and processed fats. H (Credit: Nathalie Djabrayan, licensed clinical dietitian)

A MAGICAL CULINARY EXPERIENCE AWAITS YOU AT CARNIVAL BY TRESIND

Carnival by Tresind not only presents delicious, postmodern Indian cuisine, but takes you on a whimsical culinary journey to delight your inner foodie.

With golden trees, chevron checked floors, and a clever play on lighting, the ambiance here is urban chic. We began with the Picnic Canapé box complete with a miniature picnic bench and a small tree. It included a Behl Puri bar – a juxtaposition of crunchy, sweet, and tangy; and mini dhoklas – a fermented Gujarati snack. Tiny lassi bon bons and pesto tarragon buns completed this picnic.

Mocktails were served in smoking molecular gastronomy style: guava, apple and lychee plus a mango, passion fruit, and orange. The Chicken with Soul was a butter chicken style soup, served with a butter chicken kulcha. It was best eaten with a bite of the kulcha and then the soup, to savor the experience. The Farm to Plate was served on a tray with a lit-up bonsai tree, beef kebobs, and couscous. Our server mixed up Romaine lettuce with selected vegetables

masala curry, and my favorite: saag gosht or curried meat with mustard greens. This was perfect, especially when paired with the flaky garlic naans. For dessert, the chef draped a white plastic sheet over our table and painted on assorted sweet sauces and in the middle of this, placed a white chocolate hollow globe. After freezing it with liquid nitrogen, he smashed it open to reveal a heavenly smorgasbord of salted caramel bits, chocolates, ice-cream, and brownies. Lastly, a trolley with special macaroons completed the experience on a sweet note.

A wooden book-box held the Jungle Book Essence that revealed rotisseries of tender morsels of meat, garnished by slivers of chili.

and drizzled over a lemon and herb vinaigrette. Plated with the succulent beef kebobs and couscous, it was as flavorful as it was delightfully plated. The Pulinji, a jumbo prawn caramelized in palm sugar, was garnished with a green net of wheat flour that was mildly sweet with a delicious crunch.

The Vada Pav, an Indian street food, was ingeniously served by a chef holding a toolbox that housed the ingredients. Assembled at the table, the potato cutlets and nuts were layered into soft rolls and garnished with chutneys. After our refreshing palette cleanser, the first mains included a pot with dum chicken biryani, a creamy raita, an aromatic eggplant curry, and salad. Each dish maintained the integrity of Indian flavors and spices.

The Verdict: At Carnival by Tresind you not only indulge in deliciously prepared and beautifully presented food, but experience a culinary wonderland you will surely not forget. H Visit: Carnival by Tresind Burj Daman, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC)

Space

Lighting: Make sure your office has plenty of light to cut down on eye strain and headaches. Position the computer monitor so there’s no glare from a window or overhead light, and put a small lamp on the desk for task lighting. Mar/Apr 2018

Creating just the right space in your home for an office that is not only functional, but aesthetically pleasing, can be a challenging task. HEALTH meets an expert who reveals the most important aspects to consider when creating that perfect home office space.

Spark Inspiration: Keep your desk in an area preferably where you can look up at something more interesting than a blank wall when you glance up from the computer. A window’s natural light is ideal, but if you’re in a windowless space, hang a visual or mood board for inspiration.

Functional Furniture: Consider your workflow and then look for pieces that are both beautiful and functional. If your home has traditional décor, warm wood and soft, comfy chairs or a loveseat are ideal if you have the space. A contemporary home office can feature artistic pieces or modern metal furniture.

Invest in a great chair: You spend hours in your office chair; a beautiful, ergonomicallycorrect, comfortable seat is worth every Dirham.

Location: When considering the location of your home office, consider which area will be closest in proximity to natural light. Ideally, your desk should be near a window instead of a wall, which could make you feel like you’re back in a cubicle.

Paint the Walls: Forget office white, you need a color that gets your work motor humming. For some people, that’s a bright, cheery color like orange or lime green. Others need a calming shade like botanical green or sea blue to perform.

Pleasant Functionality: There’s not much you can do to beautify your computer, printer, and phone, but you can hide unsightly cords. Start by making sure your equipment is close to outlets and easy to access if you need to unplug. Feed the cords into a desk grommet and tame the cord jungle on the floor with cord winders, tubing, or a wire organizer. (Credit: Grace van Beusekom, country manager at Humanscale) Mar/Apr 2018

POMEGRANATE

Loaded with three times as many antioxidants as green tea, pomegranate is also a good source of folic acid and vitamins A, C. and E. The antioxidants contained in pomegranate help thin the blood, which means that blood platelets are less likely to form clots.

PAPRIKA

Created by grinding capsicum peppers into a fine powder, paprika infuses a red color due to its high level of carotenoids. These can stave off the slow deterioration of your eyesight that is associated with aging. Beta carotene, also contained in paprika, is converted by the body to vitamin A, which can help keep your skin looking younger and more smooth.

PAPAYA

Besides being delicious, eating more papaya can boost your heart health. According to studies, vitamin C and lycopene rich fruits may help prevent heart disease. From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

PILES IN PREGNANCY

Question: I am eight months pregnant and after experiencing discomfort while sitting down, was diagnosed with piles. Is this normal and how is it treated? Dr. Diethart Bayer, general surgeon responds, “Fissures during pregnancy are common, and this is symptomatic of rupturing of skin and tissues in or around the anus. While common cases of piles in women are easily treatable post-partum, when not handled by a professional early on, there can be cause for surgery and irreversible damage as a result of this surprisingly common phenomenon. The standard treatment for anal fissure involves soft-laser application and pain-killing creams. In some cases, the fissure may not be cured with the treatment, and there are chances that the condition might become critical. In such events, the additional treatment procedure will be decided by the doctor after evaluating the scenario in detail.”

GRIEVING CHILD

EFFECTIVE FAT REMOVAL

Farah Dahabi, clinical social worker who leads a grief center responds, “If you are old enough to love, you are old enough to grieve. A 6-year-old child will struggle to understand the finality of death, which means she will ask the same questions repeatedly. It is natural for her to feel a range of emotions and her grief will come in waves.” Here are Farah Dahabi's key tips for supporting a grieving child: Be truthful. Answer the questions she asks – even the difficult ones. Don’t delay sharing the news. Maintain structure and routine to reinforce a sense of safety. This can help kids feel normal and grounded. Tell her how you’re feeling: Kids are more likely to express their feelings if they see you expressing yours.

Dr. Francisco de Melo, senior plastic surgeon responds, “Liposuction and liposculpture are two words for the same procedure. The technique is similar, and I think that the word ‘liposculpture’ is more a marketing-driven word. The principle behind these techniques is to remove fat in a way that will improve the body contour. They should be small or minimally invasive, and the fat will be excised through small skin incisions using a cannula connected to a vacuum pump or a syringe. These can be done with the help of different power assisted systems and can be performed in very different areas. It can be done under general or local anesthesia, depending essentially on the extent of the procedure and the risk factors of the patient.”

Question: Recently my husband’s mother, who was very close to my 6-year-old daughter, passed away. How do we help her cope with the loss?

Question: I am considering liposuction to help with my muffin top. Can you explain how liposuction works and is it different from liposculpture?

THE THEME “DubaiLoving started as a city blog; a platform I was using to share with my followers the hotspots around the city, events, happenings, and activities. Soon enough, it became a big Instagram community of people who wanted to share their DubaiLoving moment which kept growing day by day. The most popular articles on the blog are the shortlists about restaurants or types of food, activities, staycation ideas, and trip suggestions from Dubai.” HER AUDIENCE “My audience, surprisingly enough, is from all over the world. DATA INTERPRETATION WILL DRIVE THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY, SAYS EXPERT PANEL AT THE WORLD GOVERNMENT SUMMIT Officer of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, moderated the session.

“The interpretation of enormous data being collected using the latest technological advancements, cost of delivery of healthcare, and access to healthcare will drive the future of healthcare across the world,” according to the panel of experts at the World Government Summit 2018 in Dubai. The panelists included Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder,

Chairman & Managing Director of VPS Healthcare; Ms. Anuradha Acharya, Chief Executive Office, Ocimum Biosolutions, Inc; and Mr. Soumitra Dutta, Professor of Operations, Technology and Information Management at Cornell University SC Johnson College of Business. Ms. Madeline Bell, President and Chief Executive

Speaking about the importance of innovation in healthcare, Dr. Shamsheer said, “The healthcare sector is at a crucial juncture today, with increasing pressure due to the increasing population and subsequently, increasing operation cost. Innovation is therefore the crux on which the entire system could either evolve or collapse. Innovation is imperative as it has to address critical issues such as improving the quality of treatments, reducing cost, increasing the efficiency, and providing healthcare access to people in remote areas.” The session also deliberated the increasing role of personalized medicine in healthcare where medical professionals are treating patients according to

the appropriate treatment options that are required. Diseases today are diagnosed on the basis of a patient’s genetic build. It is vital that treatments are planned and administered accordingly. The innovations revolving around the science of genome have attained top priority. Pediatric care is one of the primary foundations of healthcare that is benefitting from the technological innovations of personalized medicine and genetic studies. The panelists all agreed that the disruption in healthcare is long overdue. “It will be around the patient,” said Dr. Shamsheer. “We will move from ‘Break-Fix model’ to the ‘Predict-and-Prevent model.’ The need now is to make it cost effective and accessible to all people.”

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS OFFER HOPE TO CHILDREN BORN WITH GENETIC BLOOD DISEASES Dr. Rabi Hanna, M.D., a specialist in pediatric hematology, oncology, and blood and bone marrow transplantation at Cleveland Clinic in the US, says significant changes in treatment are likely in the next five to 10 years, including advances in bone marrow transplant techniques, gene therapies, and improved medications. Currently, the most common treatments, including blood transfusions and medication, only relieve the symptoms of the disease rather than provide a cure, and many patients die young. Unless they can receive a bone marrow transplant, the average life expectancy of a child diagnosed with

sickle cell disease is just 34 years. “We really have to provide a cure, and the only cure available has been bone marrow transplantation, with the best outcome from donors who are matched family – brothers and sisters,” Dr. Hanna said. “In the past few years, there have been big steps forward in haplo-transplants, using family members that are only half-matched, particularly a mom or dad with 50 percent of the child’s genes. That will give more children the chance of a cure, replacing bone marrow that is defective with new bone marrow that is healthy.” New treatments will be particularly important in several Arab countries, where rates of both sickle cell disease and thalassemia are higher than in Europe or North America. Both

diseases cause abnormalities of the patient’s hemoglobin, the part of the red blood cells that transport oxygen. “For thalassemia, the occurrence is much higher in the Middle East compared with the US, and for sickle cell disease it is slightly higher, especially in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates,” Dr. Hanna said. “For thalassemia, one in every 12 in the United Arab Emirates is a carrier for the gene that causes the disease.” Dr. Hanna said trials of haplo-transplants are now in phase two and three, testing for efficacy and side-effects. Cleveland Clinic was part of an initial phased study, using modified chemotherapy to help prepare patients.

Gene therapy, using modified DNA to introduce a functional gene to replace the mutated gene causing the blood disorder, offers additional possibilities for a cure beyond bone marrow transplants. “Early phase one studies looking at this area of gene therapy for thalassemia are very promising, although they are in the very early stages so it’s going to take time before we see them become available in a clinical setting,” said Dr. Hanna. He added, “There are also several medications that have recently been developed for the treatment of sickle cell disease and thalassemia – two have been approved by the FDA, and others are pending. These aren’t a cure, but they can make the disease less severe.”

BOURN HALL FERTILITY CENTRE DUBAI OFFERS FERTILITY PRESERVATION OPTIONS FOR CANCER-DIAGNOSED PATIENTS On the occasion of World Cancer Day on February 4, Bourn Hall Fertility Centre, Dubai, informed about options to preserve the fertility of cancer-diagnosed patients who will have to undergo fertility affecting treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Egg freezing can be a viable fertility preservation method for women diagnosed with cancer. After cancer treatment, whenever the patient feels ready to get pregnant, the frozen eggs are thawed and injected with sperm to fertilize them. The process to collect the eggs is very similar to a regular IVF procedure. Hormones are needed to stimulate the ovaries to produce the eggs, which are collected and frozen.

CEO of Bourn Hall International, holding company of the Dubai-based Bourn Hall Fertility Centre, said, “It is surprising that many cancer diagnosed patients are unaware that they have fertility preservation options. We want to educate all cancer diagnosed patients, who are not yet undergoing a chemotherapy or radiation therapy about options to preserve their fertility and be able to establish a family after successful cancer treatment.” Dr. David Robertson, Medical Director at Bourn Hall Fertility Centre and Consultant in Reproductive Medicine & Infertility, adds, “We want to support cancer patients and make sure they have all the information to make the best decisions for life after cancer treatment.” Dr. David adds, “For patients wishing to cryopreserve eggs due to a cancer diagnosis, fertility specialists will liaise with the patient’s oncologist to ensure that in each case it is an appropriate treatment option.”
