HEALTHY BABY HAPPY FAMILY Non-Invasive Prenatal Test

by Genetika

NIPT is a genetic test undertaken during pregnancy and is considered an advanced prenatal screening test. It is offered to pregnant women to estimate the risk that their fetus may be affected with: • Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome) • Trisomy 18 (Edward’s syndrome) • Trisomy 13 (Patau’s syndrome)

Genetika NIPT can also determine the baby’s gender.

The test is offered locally in Dubai, UAE for the first time and Genetika laboratory is the first pioneering laboratory in the Middle East to provide the NIPT.

Why is the test called non-invasive?

This is because all what is required is just a blood sample from the pregnant woman while in the past; doctors had to collect amniotic fluid from inside the womb. The ability to isolate fetal DNA from maternal blood during pregnancy has opened up exciting opportunities for safer, accurate, and improved NonInvasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT).

What is the importance of testing the fetus during pregnancy?

The Middle Eastern community has May/June 2018

14

a unique tribal structure that is still preserved over generations. This structure creates a sort of genetic isolates that can be significantly used in linking medical conditions with the tribes. The high rate of consanguinity and geographically isolates have greatly impacted the landscape of genetic disorders in the Middle East.

Genetic diseases are known to be one of the leading causes of death in the UAE.

The incidence of Down’s syndrome (DS) among Emiratis in Dubai is 1 in every 320 births (1:319), higher than the world average of 1 in every 800 births, according to data released by the Center for Arab Genomic Studies in 2015.

When can I go for the test? After completing 10 weeks of pregnancy.

HEALTHY BABY HAPPY FAMILY

What distinguishes Genetika NIPT?

• The test is available for the first time inhouse in the Middle East. • Genetika NIPT is using the most advanced technology worldwide IONA brought from UK to guarantee the best quality and accuracy. • Safe for the fetus, the invasive test carries the risk of losing the fetus during the sample collection. • Fetal gender determination at a very early stage of pregnancy. • Test is effective for a single fetus or twins. • Short turnaround time. • Less sample rejection chances. • Genetic counselling is available with Genetika NIPT. Genetika NIPT is safe, fast, and accurate. Visit: http://menalabs.com/genetika/pregnancy.php Contact: 04 340 6766

FAST FORWARD INTO THE FUTURE… A ONE ON ONE WITH DR. TIM WILSON

At the recent Thumbay Group’s innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference held on April 11 in Dubai, HEALTH had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Tim Wilson, ME Health Industries Leader at PwC about the future of Artificial Intelligence in the health sector.

Keeping a Check on AI “It is up to us to determine how to control AI which is what the UAE has officially implemented already. So you need great leaders in place like His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE first and foremost. Then His Excellency Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence. Then we need regulators following through with this. So here in the UAE in particular, you see more activity and more thinking regarding AI than anywhere else really. It is outstanding and they are going to shape the future.”

May/June 2018

16

AI in Our Pocket “In the future, the role of AI is going to be more integrated. For instance, Soul Machines are something that people don’t even know are an avatar. It is so empathetic that it reacts to your facial expressions and tone of voice. We are

already interacting with AI almost daily without even knowing it and it’s already in our pocket. If you are using WhatsApp, you are using AI already. In fact, Google is run by Deep Mind, another AI application. When you speak to your phone in an Android operating system, this is AI.”

Changing the Face of Health Care “It is in the nature of human beings when seeking a specialist to look for the best in the field and for those with specific expertise. However, the problem is that despite their vast amounts of knowledge, he or she won’t know as much as AI. It is true that we teach AI, but in fact AI will know more because it is faster, more efficient, it can read the journals and start to look at patterns. AI can also crunch data it knows based on genotypes, lifestyle, family, history, past medical records, history with medications being taken; and it can compute based on this huge amount of data. This is something a human being just cannot do. The key is that we have to be training doctors to work alongside with AI in order to accept it.” H

Plus Points of AI “Successfully implementing AI in the healthcare system will have lots of benefits. AI is cheaper, provides high quality, and is easier to access to healthcare. Furthermore, diagnosis and treatment could become more accurate and the emphasis could move to primary prevention either by helping stop someone from getting a disease or by controlling complications. AI can also enhance the effectiveness of medicines in the long run.”

The Warning Signs of Coronary Artery Disease HAVING CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (CAD) RAISES THE RISK FOR A HEART ATTACK. THEREFORE, KNOWING THE WARNING SIGNS IS VITAL IN SEEKING MEDICAL ATTENTION ON TIME.

May/June 2018

18

If your heart disease gets worse, your arteries will narrow, and less blood will flow to your heart. You may start to have angina symptoms, such as chest pain or discomfort when you exercise or feel stressed. This is called stable angina. In some cases, sudden new blockages that form in the arteries of the heart can become unstable. They can suddenly tear and cause

blood clots to form. These clots block blood flow to your heart, causing a heart attack or unstable angina. Over time, you may have other health problems caused by coronary artery disease. Low blood flow can make it harder for your heart to pump. This can lead to heart failure or atrial fibrillation that increases the risk of stroke.

After the Diagnosis

A diagnosis of CAD can be hard to accept and understand, however, adopting a heart healthy lifestyle can help you control CAD risk factors. For example, physical activity lowers blood pressure and LDL cholesterol level, helps control diabetes, and pre-diabetes, reduces stress, and helps control weight. Lifestyle changes and ongoing care can help you manage the disease. H (Credit: Dr. Carla Sleiman, specialist cardiology)

Ramadan is a beautiful time of the year; however, with the changes in diet and routine, some of us may grapple with an increase in lower back pain and heel pain during the month. HEALTH learns more‌

May/June 2018

20

Pay Attention to Your Posture Lower back pain is more or less related to bad posture in most cases. The problem may arise or be more persistent during Ramadan because we tend to become careless in keeping our posture in check. People also spend more time praying and often forget the importance of proper posture while standing and bending. If not immediately, but in the long-term, this can aggravate the problem of lower back pain which is linked to a disc or even problems with heel pain and balance.

Physical Stress

Exercises to Help

Physical stress affects the disc and places stress on joints while mental stress causes spasms in the vessels and veins. The muscle needs blood flow in order to relax. So, if there is a lot of tension in vessels and veins, we don’t have enough blood flow to the muscles which may result in a painful muscle spasm.

1. Certain stretches done consistently throughout the day can also help; for example, going into a kneeling position and then extending the arms to the front so that they increase the arch and the curve in the lower back. This position should be maintained for at least one minute and continued five times, three times a day. 2. For heel pain upon waking up in the morning, try to stretch the lower side of the foot. Hold the big toe and try to pull it up to stretch the fascia, as you stretch the plantar side of the foot. Start to massage the plantar side of the foot towards the toe. H

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

May/June 2018

22

Blood Sugar

We hear about the amazing properties of natural apple cider vinegar from being an antiseptic to curing acne, diabetes, and even helping with weight loss. But what does science say? Let’s find out.

One of the studies from the “Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Journal” has shown that apple cider vinegar (ACV) may have positive effects on blood glucose control, and reduces the blood glucose response by approximately 20 to 30 percent post carbohydrates intake. A study in the “Diabetes Journal” found that ACV increases insulin sensitivity following the consumption of vinegar with a high carbohydrate meal with a slight decrease in hemoglobin A1C.

Weight Loss

A study in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found that those who were given ACV were less likely to gain body fat with higher energy expenditure, lower body weight, smaller waist, and less abdominal fat than those who did not have the vinegar. Also, it was found that the higher the dose of ACV, the less appetite there was perhaps because people

felt nauseous after consuming the vinegar.

Heart Health

A diet high in ACV has been shown to prevent hypertension while reducing the total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, enhancing cardiac health.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

A Japanese study claimed that some women regained their menstrual cycle after a trial of consuming ACV and this was thought to be due to vinegar’s effect on normalizing insulin resistance commonly associated with PCOS. However, more studies are being done in this field.

How to Take Apple Cider Vinegar

Always add one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a large glass of water. Drinking it straight can be harsh for your body because of the acidity. It can also be used in a variety of recipes. Try it as part of a healthy salad dressing, or use it to make dishes like sushi. H (Credit: Nathalie Djabrayan, licensed clinical dietitian)

What’s Zapping Your Energy? MANY OF US FEEL A LITTLE TIRED DURING RAMADAN, BUT IF YOU STAY CLEAR OF THE FOLLOWING ENERGY ZAPPERS, YOU MAY ACTUALLY FEEL MUCH BETTER AT THE END OF YOUR FAST.

May/June 2018

24

A CARB-HEAVY SUHOOR When you consume a lot of refined carbs, including white bread and potatoes, these are used up quite fast. The result is that blood sugar spikes and the brain may stop producing orexin, a chemical that makes you feel alert. Opt instead for a low-carb healthy Suhoor containing proteins, healthy fats, and foods low on the glycemic index diet. EXCESSIVE CONNECTIVITY Long hours of using a smart phone have been shown to expose you to the risks of electromagnetic fields which can zap your energy, especially at night. Set time limits during Ramadan especially, and keep all gadgets out of the bedroom for a peaceful night of sleep.

FOOD INTOLERANCE Do you feel zapped after eating your meal? According to Dr. Graham Simpson, an age management expert, you may have mild food intolerance as grains and dairy are the most common foods that people have problems with. At least 50 percent or more people have gluten intolerance, despite not having a positive blood test. He suggests that the only way for people to diagnose themselves is to eliminate wheat and other products with gluten. SLEEP DEPRIVATION In Ramadan, sleep cycles shift and change, but if you suffer from chronic sleep deprivation, you are inviting a slew of negative health problems which includes fatigue, moodiness, and even an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease. Essentially, it is the duration and quality of sleep that directly impacts our mental clarity, mood, and our ability to cope with stress during waking hours. H

Is Stress Controlling Your Appetite? Juggling tight deadlines, an office commute, and dealing with day-to-day stressors often has us reaching for unhealthy snacks in the middle of it all. Learn how to get off the stressful eating cycle and live a healthier life.

May/June 2018

26

How to Beat this Cycle

• Start by understanding your situation to analyze what’s causing the stress and why it’s stressful. This is part of the solution to combating stress and overeating. • Get rid of fat habits and adopt new habits as experts say it takes the brain six to nine months to learn new habits. If you habitually deal with stress cravings by settling in with donuts, acknowledge this and actively work on changing it.

How Stress Makes us Hungry

Chronic unrelenting stress, the kind most of us live with every day, often makes us relentlessly hungry. According to Dr. Pamela Peeke, a physician, scientist, and expert in integrative and preventive medicine, this is because one of the purposes of cortisol (the stress hormone) is to help your body refuel for the next emergency. Therefore, when your body’s on constant cortisone overload, you eat and the foods you crave when stressed out replenish the calories used up during the stress response.

• Eat breakfast as studies have shown people who eat cereal for breakfast are less emotionally distressed than nonbreakfast eaters. This is because porridge and wholegrain toast are brain foods that help you stay attentive and focused until lunch time. • Hit the treadmill as exercise is one of the best ways to shake off stress. It will give you an endorphin boost to counteract the rise in cortisol levels. H

CONNECT WITH SPIRITUALITY Work on your spiritual growth and learn to forgive yourself and others from the heart. Stay strong in your belief in a One Supreme Authority, and His powers; this will make you more grounded and at peace, ultimately leading to a more positive outlook about life.

BEGIN EACH DAY WITH A SMILE This is actually backed by science as when you smile, you trigger smile muscles in others and in turn, you also benefit. Smiling triggers the neural brain circuits linked with happiness.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS Stay in touch with friends, family, and loved ones as much as possible. Despite your busy schedule, plan and make the effort to meet, talk, even if just for 10 minutes. Research found that our personal happiness is most often dependent on the happiness of those with whom they connect in life.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW Whether this means learning a new language, cooking a new recipe, or learning a new skill related to your profession, learning can add a sense of newness and excitement. H

Rewire Your Brain to Stop Negative Thoughts

May/June 2018

30

DO YOU OFTEN CATCH YOURSELF HAVING NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, OR EVEN WORSE, ALLOWING THEM TO CONSUME YOU? ARE YOU STUCK IN RUMINATING ABOUT WHAT WENT WRONG? HERE ARE THREE TIPS THAT CAN HELP YOU REFRAME YOUR MIND OUT OF THIS VICIOUS CYCLE…

UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYTHING IS NEUTRAL Believe it or not, we are the ones who attribute meaning to all that exists. This means that we also decide what is positive and what is negative. Once the label is attached to situations, they dictate the effect that these events have on our life.

REFRAME THE MEANING OF POSITIVITY AND NEGATIVITY Let’s go back to the basics of linguistics and psychology. We have been defining the terms ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ in the incorrect manner. Negative does not mean bad and positive is not equivalent to good. When we define something to be ‘negative’, we simply imply that it is a block or we see it from a ‘segregating’ angle. On the other hand, when we have the perception that something is ‘positive’, it subconsciously becomes ‘integrative’. By interpreting an event or a situation to be negative, we manifest a blockage that hinders our growth and

evolution. Therefore, it affects our thoughts and behavior. What you can do is shift your perception of what you consider negative. Instead of considering it a blockage in your life, transform it into a diversion on the path of life which will take you to a better place. Believe that everything happens for a reason and perceive the event to be part of a process. QUESTION YOUR THOUGHTS Try to find the rationale behind the crippling thoughts you have. Stop the movie that you continuously play in your mind and start asking how this event can serve you and what lessons can you learn out of it. H (Credit: Mai Elsayed, a clinical hypnotherapist)

Keep Your Eyes in Optimal Health This Summer

May/June 2018

32

With the harsh rays of the sun coupled with frequent dry winds and indoor air conditioning, our eyes are very susceptible to dryness and potential damage if not protected. Here are some easy tips to ensure your eyes stay well protected this summer.

Sunglasses

In the case of sunglasses, it’s best to splurge on a good quality pair rather than a cheap pair that simply looks stylish. The most important thing to consider is these should block both UV-A and UV-B rays completely. Either the sunglasses should be labeled accordingly on the side or the box these are packaged in should be labeled.

Swimming

Lots of us enjoy the pool or even beach for a swim in the summer, but if your eyes are not protected, chlorine and salt water can trigger dry eyes and even infections over time. Invest in a sturdy, snug fitting, and good quality pair of goggles, one for each member of your family.

Air Conditioning

Even being indoors at the office or home with our ACs on full can dry out the eyes and cause redness. Store a bottle of artificial tears in the fridge and make it a habit of using this daily, as and when required.

Hydration

Optimal hydration is required not only for your body, but also for your eyes. By drinking a minimum of two liters of water per day, the chances of dehydration will lessen.

ARE YOU IN A SO-SO MARRIAGE?

May/June 2018

34

Nobody talks about the humdrum of routine that sets in marriage once the kids are busy with school, your husband is working hard at his career, and you are settled in your own routine. Yet for some women, so-so relationships require as much effort as problematic relationships. HEALTH delves deeper…

In-Between

Far from disastrous marriages we expect to fall apart quickly, these so-so marriages, explains Dr. Kennon Rider, associate professor at Zayed University and marriage/family therapist, are neither on the rocks, or blissfully happy. "In these so-so marriages, things are not too bad, but also there is not much real joy," he says. They rock along, which for some, can feel stagnant sometimes, especially when people reach middle age.

Take Our Quiz to Find Out if You’re On Your Way to a So-So Marriage: Q. Does your conversation mostly revolve around practicalities such as the children, the home, or only work? If yes, remember that boredom and discontent can affect both men and women. It is imperative that both should talk about what’s happening openly and together try and figure out how to reinvent the relationship. Q. Was the last time you did anything actively fun together over 12 months ago? And you have nothing planned anytime soon? If yes, try to recall together the simple things you did

during the early years of marriage that made you both happy and work on doing more of that. Q. Do you only go out as a family and never as a couple? Is this starting to put a damper on your relationship? If yes, work at scheduling date nights or days when you both can spend meaningful and quality time together. H

How to Disconnect

Moms Addicted to WhatsApp We constantly hear about teenagers addicted to their smartphones and advised how to keep this in check. But there are many women in particular who have multiple Whatsapp groups and are constantly checking alerts, sending messages, and doing pretty much what we are telling our kids not to do. Here’s help…

The Red Flags Checklist Phone storage is always a problem since you have so many images and videos on your WhatsApp groups. Your family verbally complains about your lack of attention because you are too busy on WhatsApp. You can’t understand why it takes a person more than a day to respond to a WhatsApp message. You cannot resist the urge to pick up your phone and check

• Experiment with short periods of inaccessibility. As with any addiction, there is a period of withdrawal and anxiety. • Leave your cell phone at home one day a week. Saturday is a good day to cut off email and cell phone usage. • When sitting with family, make rules to not use the phone that apply to you also. • Learn moderation. the message every time you get an alert, irrespective of the time. You never miss an opportunity to check your alerts even if you are in the middle of something. You change your WhatsApp status photos daily and check who is viewing them. You constantly forward jokes, videos, and news to everyone, so much so that even some friends and family have blocked you.

PAYING ATTENTION… TO YOURSELF

Despite women juggling home and career, we are still putting ourselves last on the priorities list. Use our guide to help make yourself number one and in turn, boost your wellbeing.

Get active: Make it a habit to

eat well, sleep well, and simply take some time out to breathe. No matter how hectic your schedule is, if you skip these important elements, it will gradually overlap and start affecting all other areas of your life.

Be practical: Don’t feel guilty

about dishes piling up or unmade beds, instead invest in domestic help where you can delegate chores and use that time to invest in yourself.

Schedule time: Organize time to freely leave the kids with your

partner while you go for a walk or do some yoga.

Connect: Remember, women

need to connect with other people – take time to have a laugh and some fun and also during harder times, to share your load with a supportive friend.

Indulge yourself: It is important to have indulgent treat times – shopping, trips to the salon to get your nails done, or a haircut to feel pampered and special.

Write down the things that you love to do:

Then schedule these three things into your day as this will give you structured routine and over time, they will gradually become a habit in your day.

Set realistic goals: Then break those down into mini goals to ensure that they are achievable. Just relax: Sometimes

you just have to accept that you won’t get around to doing everything. It’s important to tell yourself that it’s absolutely OK to accept yourself as you are. H

EASY WAYS TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE

May/June 2018

40

A BUZZWORD IN RECENT YEARS HAS BEEN GRATITUDE WITH COUNTLESS BOOKS BEING WRITTEN ON THE SUBJECT. YET MAKING GRATITUDE A DAILY REGULAR HABIT CAN ACTUALLY TRANSFORM NOT ONLY THE WAY YOU LIVE, BUT SO MANY OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE. HEALTH REVEALS MORE…

SAY THANKS BEFORE EVERY MEAL

Take a few minutes to say thanks in the form of a prayer or even just appreciating the person who cooked the meal. This habit will provide you with at least three simple opportunities to actively practice gratitude daily.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Instead of always worrying about the future or what happened yesterday, pay close attention to the present frame of life. Savor and enjoy the simple things such as that early morning coffee or helping the kids with a project.

VERBALLY APPRECIATE AT LEAST ONE PERSON DAILY

On a daily basis, purposefully thank at least one person. Look outside of your family and friends and thank those who are usually not thanked for the routine jobs they do; the man who washes your car, your maid, or the office cleaner. This will help you not take anyone for granted.

MAKE THE EFFORT TO ALWAYS DO AT LEAST ONE GOOD DEED PER DAY On a daily basis, try to do a big or small good deed for someone else. Whether that means calling on a sick neighbor or giving a meal to a person in need, this can grow into a habit for life. H

Why Are You Not More Assertive? May/June 2018

42

VERY DIFFERENT TO AGGRESSION, BY DEFINITION, ASSERTION IS THE FLEXIBLE PURSUIT OF HAVING OUR PREFERENCES MET, OPINIONS VOICED, AND OUR EMOTIONS AND BELIEFS HONESTLY COMMUNICATED IN AN APPROPRIATE WAY AT THE RELEVANT TIME. IF YOU FIND YOURSELF NOT BEING ABLE TO ASSERT YOURSELF MORE, THERE MAY BE SOME OBSTACLES GETTING IN YOUR WAY.

Do you have a fear of not being liked?

An alternative way of thinking: “I wish others liked me, I may even work hard towards it, but I do not need their approval”.

Do you have a fear of being rejected?

An alternative way of thinking: “Rejection is bad, and I do not like it, but I am not immune from it happening. It isn’t the end of the world, and although it’s hard to handle, I can cope with it”.

Do you have a fear of hurting or upsetting others? An alternative way

of thinking: “I would like this person not to feel hurt, but I have no guarantee they will not. Although uncomfortable, they and I can stand my assertion”.

Do you think that others know what you want? An alternative way of thinking: “It would be nice if they knew, but they do not have to. It is worth tolerating the discomfort of speaking up, as there is more chance of my desires being met if I do”.

prefer to not experience this uncomfortable emotion, but being human essentially means I will experience it. Busy is the New Buzzword WHEN SOMEONE ASKS ‘HOW YOU ARE YOU?’ DO YOU AUTOMATICALLY RESPOND WITH 'JUST SO BUSY’? THESE DAYS BEING BUSY, NO MATTER WHAT FIELD YOU ARE IN, HAS BECOME A STATUS SYMBOL SYNONYMOUS WITH SUCCESS. YET LOTS OF US ARE RUNNING RAGGED, SOMETIMES NOT EVEN GETTING MUCH DONE, FOR THE SAKE OF BEING BUSY. HERE’S HOW TO GET OFF THIS HYPER-BUSY ROLLERCOASTER.

RETHINK YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS

This means balancing your mental, emotional, and spiritual sides. In her book Thrive, Arianna Huffington identified the “third metric of success” which goes beyond the two traditional metrics of money and power and breaks it into four components: well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving. She considers lifelong learning, meditation, mindfulness, and community involvement equally as important in achieving and defining success.

LEISURE TIME REDEFINED

While lots of us take breaks for meals, self-care, and so on, still we are busy writing to-do lists, typing up emails, or even planning the next meal. Instead of multi-tasking and making every single minute a productive one, acknowledge your need for downtime and work on it. PLAN SOME TIME FOR NOTHING

For the “I am crazy busy” individual, the concept of doing nothing at any time of the day, including weekends, is almost frightening. Yet it is at this time that we self-reflect, breathe, and actually learn to appreciate the people and things we are surrounded by. Start slowly by incorporating 10-minutes daily into a timeframe where you don’t check your messages, don’t plan, and don’t speak on the phone. Gradually increase this time until it becomes a daily habit. H

Simple Habits to Help Boost Your Self-Confidence Simple steps that you can do easily on a daily basis can actually help you improve your life greatly, as HEALTH finds out.

Visualization: Choose a quiet time

and place at home where you can spend just five minutes uninterrupted and do nothing but focus on your goals, what you want to achieve in your life, and imagine your future as you would like it to be. This will actually shift you into a calmer state of mind and help you connect with yourself.

46

Remove self-doubt:

Standing in a posture of confidence for at least 20 seconds, even when you don’t really feel confident, can have an impact on our chances for success and will enhance your feelings of self-confidence.

Love and accept yourself: Invest in just

five minutes a day to recite positive affirmations, positive prayers, and good thoughts. Loving yourself is a required condition for building self-esteem and in fact, affirmations can help change the way you feel.

Control your anger: Use the Pull

Out technique in which you focus on your angry feeling in your body and then using your imagination, use your hands to pretend that you are yanking it out to throw away.

What’s Draining You? Whether at the office or at home, we all have a certain person who just zaps our energy, tires us mentally, and is hard to deal with. While we may not be able to stop dealing with the person, HEALTH reveals that learning to read the signs is one step towards confronting the problem.

May/June 2018

48

DEEP BREATH The moment you feel zapped— or stressed out—take a deep breath. Breathing is a wonderful way to center yourself. Just follow the breath and tell yourself that you know what’s happening and you can deal with it. It’s important to remember our individual power. If we can focus on the breath, or on an image of a mountaintop, the tension will lessen. MAKE BOUNDARIES Creating boundaries is another way of protecting yourself by saying: “This is what I can do for you, and this is what I can’t.” You don’t have to convince this person of your stance. Instead of getting defensive, remain neutral. When someone starts pushing your buttons, and you start boiling inside, stay calm and cool.

UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS One of the first things to do is to recognize when you’re being drained, and that begins with tuning in to your physical reactions. Do you feel tired when you hang up the phone after speaking with someone? Does your head ache, or do you feel low and worthless when he/she starts talking to you?

STEP BACK Step back and consider the type of people that irritate you, because one law of energy is that we attract what we haven’t yet worked out in ourselves. If I’m a very angry person, I’ll find myself surrounded by angry people. By paying attention to the people who seem so draining, you might discover something you need to address. Vitamin B: The four types of B vitamins required for healthy hair are biotin, para amino benzoic acid, vitamin B6, and inositol.

Vitamin C: Is known to be important in the production of tyrosine in the body, which is needed to give strength to hair strands and nourish the cells of the hair follicles.

Vitamin E: This vitamin increases blood circulation, especially near the scalp. This is necessary for healthy hair follicles, as it provides them with enough oxygen.

Vitamin D: Some signs of vitamin D deficiency include a reduction in calcium absorption and hair loss. To reverse hair loss due to vitamin D deficiency, you need more exposure to sunlight, especially early in the morning. Alternatively, you can increase your intake of more fortified dairy products.

Essential fatty acids: Essential fatty acids, which can be found in flaxseed oil, salmon oil, and primrose oil, will help to improve the texture of your hair and keep it from becoming brittle. H

Why All of Us Should be Using Retinol May/June 2018

54

In today’s world where everyone is very particular about their appearance, retinol is one of those mustinclude ingredients in your anti-aging arsenal that can truly turn back the clock. HEALTH looks at the facts behind retinol.

Q. What is retinol?

Retinol creams are derivatives of vitamin A which is the only vitamin that has been proven to have therapeutic effects on the skin. The use of retinol should be done under the direction of a specialized physician.

Q. Why is it used?

Retinol creams are among the most effective methods of skin rejuvenation. Although its initial use was described for acne eruptions, it was found that retinol creams when used for a duration of three months, has a profound effect on making the skin look healthier and younger.

Q. When to use retinol?

Retinol is ideal for anyone above age 30 to improve the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation. However, as visible signs of aging and sun damage start to surface, incorporating retinol earlier helps strengthen the skin at a deeper level.

Q. What does it do?

It works by increasing and regenerating collagen and the deeper layers of the skin as well as increasing the number of elastin fibers. It also helps to reduce blemishes and impurities and provides a thicker, younger, and more radiant appearance to our skin.

Q. What to expect?

It is very normal to experience redness, itchiness, and some skin irritation during the first few days or weeks of the therapy. During that period, it is extremely essential to avoid direct exposure to the sun and to always use a sunblock when heading outdoors. It is also very important to keep the skin moisturized to avoid excessive dryness. H

May/June 2018

58

STOP RELYING ON SOCIAL MEDIA FADS AND YOUR FRIENDS TO TELL YOU WHICH SKIN CREAM IS GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN. INSTEAD, CHECK OUT THIS LIST OF COMMON SKIN INGREDIENTS TO AVOID.

Mineral oil: A

petroleum by-product, this is also comedogenic meaning it clogs the pores. Once applied on the skin, it coats the surface similar to plastic and blocks the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. It also promotes acne and ultimately, may lead to possible premature aging.

Propylene glycol or PGs: Used as anti-freeze and brake fluid, PGs are one of the most widely used ingredients to bind moisture

in creams. As these easily penetrate the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure, it often triggers sensitivities and allergies.

Fragrance:

Fragrance written on a label may indicate up to 4,000 separate ingredients and can lead to allergic reactions; not only skin allergies, but even respiratory allergies. Sensitive persons should avoid fragrance and look for products clearly labeled as ‘fragrance-free’.

UVA filters: UVA filters are known as the benzophenones which are a family of chemicals that include oxybenzone and dioxybenzone. These can sensitize the skin, making it prone to inflammation, rashes, and allergic reactions. H (Credit: Dr. Ikramullah Al Nasir, specialist dermatologist) May/June 2018

FIDDA AL MARZOUQI TALKS TRENDS

May/June 2018

Fidda Al Marzouqi is an Abu Dhabi based fashion designer and founder of Emirati Couture brand, Cabochon. Her creative persona aligns well with her leadership and entrepreneurial qualities, highlighting her execution of stunning haute couture pieces that are aimed at making women feel absolutely regal and breathtaking in their beauty. Here are her top tips for modest dressing…

BODY TYPE “Even when it comes to conservative wear or kaftans, make sure you select one that is appropriate to your body type. I always believe that our clients know best, and we help customize their kaftans and dresses to create the best fit for their lifestyle and body type. For smaller body types, the right choice would be a kaftan that follows the silhouette and stays with you as you. For wellstructured friends out there, I would recommend a more

drapey dress that creates a flowing look and gives the body a nice silhouette.” SUMMER-FRIENDLY FABRICS “It is important to focus on fabrics that are summer friendly and also fancy at the same time. Kaftans in general are very loose and airy; most of our kaftans are made using light and very flattering crepe. We also like Crepe de Chine, French and Italian dentelle, tulle, and chiffon that are part of the new Cabochon collection.”

ACCESSORIZING THE KAFTAN AND THE HIJAB “Accessorizing the kaftan and the hijab is something fun. In this case, the headgear can be simpler to highlight the beauty of the dress. We also custom make scarves along with kaftans. Choosing one color works better than a pattern. A sheer chiffon scarf can be worn over the hijab and is the perfect, light fabric that could accompany your kaftan.” H

EXERCISE IN RAMADAN: FRIEND OR FOE?

As we spend most of the days in Ramadan without food or water, some believe that exercise and Ramadan are not compatible concepts. However, with the following tips you can actually exercise during Ramadan without any problems.

May/June 2018

62

THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF RAMADAN

Types of Exercise

• These are always the hardest – as our bodies are adjusting to a new routine. Depending on what stimulants we are used to on normal days, like coffee or tea, headaches are usually inevitable. It is therefore better to avoid any exercise the first few days until our bodies are fully accustomed and adjusted to the idea of fasting. • The key to surviving the first few days is to keep hydrated after breaking the fast and to avoid sugary and carbonated drinks at Iftar. Once our bodies are adjusted, devising a lighter exercise plan is a good first step to maintaining a fitness regime.

When to Exercise

• The debate on Ramadan and exercise is always with respect to timing, as in pre-Iftar or post-Iftar. The truth is there is no right or wrong answer for this. Every person is different, so if you think you can do some light exercise before Iftar, do it. If you can’t, then don’t. It is as simple as that.

• Lighter exercise pre-Iftar can be in the form of a brisk walk, Pilates, barre, or yoga. • For higher intensity exercise, it’s best to keep this for after Iftar. Demanding classes such as HIIT, spinning, or boot camp style set-ups require energy and fuel, which is at its' lowest when fasting. Our performance will naturally suffer with a depleted fuel tank, so it’s best to save the hard work for after Iftar.

Other Key Tips

• Try to do two workouts a week pre-Iftar, such as walking, yoga, or Pilates. • Switch your high intensity workouts to after Iftar. • Do a mix of two to three workouts, both high and low intensity, post-Iftar. H

What You Need to Know about Your Child’s Growing Teeth AS OUR BABY’S FIRST FEW TEETH ERUPT, MANY PARENTS DISMISS THESE AS MILK TEETH AND ARE LESS CAREFUL ABOUT TAKING CARE. YET THE REALITY IS THAT IT IS THESE TEETH THAT WILL BE THE CORNERSTONE OF HEALTHY ADULT TEETH. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP. May/June 2018

Your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled no later than his/her first birthday. By maintaining regular biannual visits, dental treatments will be kept to a minimum.

It is important to schedule your child’s first appointment before any acute dental problems develop. The first visit should be a fun time used for introducing the dentist and other staff as new friends in order to create a positive memory for the child.

Parents can help by providing positive reinforcement, and reward good behavior with presents/prizes which will make it an overall more pleasant experience.

Fissure sealants are a preventive treatment that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. It acts as a barrier, protecting the enamel from plaque and acids which cause decay.

Another preventive treatment is fluoride application which is easily absorbed into the enamel and helps make them more resistant to decay. H

Teaching Children the Value of Giving Ramadan is a special occasion for all Muslims that is much more than just fasting during the day for a whole month. Ramadan is an opportunity for parents to teach their kids about the importance of helping others and giving unconditionally. Use these tips to teach kids to be more charitable, forgiving, and inculcate a culture of volunteerism overall.

May/June 2018

68

LEAD BY EXAMPLE. We cannot deny the importance of the parents’ role in influencing their children. If you regularly volunteer and play an active role in your community, there is a big chance that your children will get inspired and do the same.

TEACH THEM EMPATHY. It is an important personality asset that makes us more human and develops our ability to understand and sympathize with others’ experiences. Empathizing encourages them to act towards helping and forgiving.

REINFORCE THE PRINCIPLES OF FORGIVENESS STARTING WITH THE SMALLEST ISSUES. The best place to do this is at home, after a sibling fight. Teach your kids to forgive regardless of the other person’s response. At the end, forgiveness releases those feelings of resentment and allows us to live in peace. ENCOURAGE THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN DONATIONS. You can create a “kindness box” at home and fill it every day during the month of Ramadan with unwanted toys, books, clothes, or food and send it to an orphanage. WATCH MOVIES WITH YOUR CHILDREN OR READ THEM BOOKS THAT REINFORCE VALUES SUCH AS KINDNESS, FORGIVENESS, AND CONTRIBUTION. Children usually identify with the character of the hero and get inspired by them. Teens with

Screens:

How Parents Can Provide Balance Parents, let’s face it; social media is here to stay and most teenagers are active with their own Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat accounts. Instead of fighting the trend, teach these simple rules to your teens for safe social networking.

May/June 2018

70

Be polite

Bad behavior is just as unacceptable in the virtual world as it is in the real world. Emphasize to your teen that they should treat others with respect and courtesy. So degrading messages, bullying online behaviors, and taunts are strictly not allowed.

Think carefully before clicking enter

Remind teens that what they post they are accountable for. Not everyone on social media is nice and when they post seemingly innocent photos of a holiday or give details about upcoming events, it can make it easier for stalkers to strike.

Follow the ‘What would grandma think’ rule

This is a great rule to inculcate in kids. Never post anything that they would be ashamed to show grandparents or other relatives. Content should be transparent and clean for everyone to see. They shouldn't share anything on social media that they wouldn't want their teachers or even future bosses to see.

Use privacy settings

Privacy settings are vital and teach these step-bystep to ensure that your kids understand each one. Also, never accept a “friend” request from a stranger. This is a safe and simple rule to follow at all times. H (Credit: www.kidshealth.org) May/June 2018

The Kids are Grown Up... Now What? WE SPEND OUR ENTIRE LIVES RAISING OUR CHILDREN, OFTEN WAITING FOR THE DAY WHEN THEY WILL BE ON THEIR OWN AND INDEPENDENT. BUT WHEN THAT TIME ACTUALLY COMES, IT CAN MAKE MANY WOMEN FEEL DEPRESSED. HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO COPE WITH AN EMPTY NEST.

What It Means Empty Nest syndrome can afflict both parents, but mothers seem to be most susceptible as many mothers may have dedicated 20 years or more of their lives to bringing up their children and see motherhood as their primary role. In two-parent families, while mothers stayed at home, fathers developed careers and a life outside of the house. This is true even for most working mothers. Similarly to anyone experiencing redundancy, the mother may feel worthless, disoriented, and unsure of what her future may hold.

May/June 2018

72

Tips for Coping • Most mothers adapt in time and psychologists suggest that it may take between 18 months and two years to make the successful transition from mother to independent woman. • Acknowledge your grief and

allow yourself to feel upset. • Seek the advice and support from other friends who also have experienced this. • Give yourself time to adapt to the changes. • List down all of the things you always wanted do, but never had

the time and work on pursuing some of these hobbies actively. • Recognize that children need to separate from parents. Be proud of your children for developing and growing - even though this may mean you will not see them as often as you would like.

• Pursue your hobbies and interests now that you have more time. • Maintain regular routines and self-care, such as eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. H

The Seminyak Beach Resort & Spa, Bali The Seminyak Beach Resort assists local projects and one such is its contribution to ROle Foundation’s Soap Recycling Program. Every year in Bali, 75 tons of soap is thrown away by hotels and villas. The soap may have only been used once or twice (or sometimes not at all) by guests. Every month ROle collects it and then it is delivered to the Foundation’s

small-scale soap reprocessing center at the ROle Foundation campus in Nusa Dua, where it is broken down, sanitized, and reprocessed to create new soap. The aim is to recycle 19,500 bars of used hospitality soap annually. The soap is then supplied to poor communities and orphanages in need of hygiene products. www.theseminyak.com May/June 2018

the

Space

Summer is almost here and to help get in the mood, here are some insider tips to infuse a fresher look into your space.

Start with a neutral color scheme: Rather than having a mix of colors, a basic color palette will help work its magic. Using organic and natural colors will help retain the comfort factor of a beautiful home.

May/June 2018

76

Choose a simple sofa: A simple classic sofa with a neutral color can help you stick with the theme. The minimal design is not only fashionable at the moment; it’s a long-lasting seamless trend.

Add bits of green to your home: A little bit of green always adds freshness and vibrancy; whether faux plants or green cushions; the options are endless. Adding greenery to various places such as your coffee table, dining table, and entry will help your home feel more like summer.

Pile on the cushions for a luxurious feeling: Bright pillows help bring in that pop of color and help spruce up the living room. These humble accessories can add your personal touch when played with the prints and sizes and makes experimenting with new trends much easier.

Use a statement mirror: Mirrors are a simple way to reflect light making the room appear bigger. A classic mirror exudes elegance in a simple house and can help fill in that stubborn awkward space that you don’t know what to do with.

Add in a throw for comfort and color: A classic linen throw can be used in different rooms and doesn't have to sit in one place. The uses are endless and they can be switched easily for fresh decor. On the foot of the bed, it can be placed horizontally and over the sofa in a diagonal manner.

Healthy Eating for Children Fasting in Ramadan Preparing special fried foods or sugary goodies for Iftar for children who are fasting is quite common. Yet it is imperative that parents choose healthy food for their children for all their meals during Ramadan to ensure their daily nutritional requirements are fulfilled in the Suhoor and the Iftar meals.

Suhoor Suggestions • An ideal meal at Suhoor should contain high fiber breakfast cereals such as oats, porridge with nuts, green leafy vegetables paratha with low- fat yogurt, and wholemeal chicken sandwiches with fruit.

May/June 2018

78

• Kids should be given energy and protein dense foods such as dates and dry fruit milk shakes during their Suhoor meal. • It is recommended to incorporate high fiber fruits and vegetables which digest slowly and gradually release

Iftar Suggestions sugar into the body. Watery fruits like melons and vegetables like celery, cucumber, and tomato will help to rehydrate the body during the fast. • Drinking plenty of water is key during the non-fasting hours in Ramadan to keep the body hydrated throughout.

• Iftar is the meal when an individual replenishes their energy by consuming food after long hours of fasting. Avoid eating excess oily, fried, and fatty foods as they are empty calories. • Consume foods from all food groups. An Iftar meal should include more fluids other than just water. Fresh fruit juices with no-added sugar will help rehydrate the body. • Also, include a simple form of easily digested sugar, fresh fruit, lentil soup, or chicken soup before beginning the meal. • Adopt healthy eating options for desserts in the form of fruit salad or fruit yoghurt instead of heavy sugar coated sweets, cakes, chocolates, and pastries. FIVE FOODS THAT WILL KEEP YOU FULL FOR LONGER Whether we admit it or not, many of us feel gnawing pangs of hunger as we fast throughout the holy month of Ramadan. Try including some of the following foods in your Suhoor meal to stay full for longer.

Flax Seeds Flax seeds are rich in both protein and healthy omega-3 acids, not to mention they are packed in fiber. Add a spoonful to your smoothie or sprinkle some over fruit to keep you feeling full for longer.

Quinoa Eat it sweet with fruits or add some vegetables for a savory treat, quinoa is a complex grain and one that can help you suppress your cravings effortlessly. It can be easily incorporated into a wide range of meals, delivering healthy protein, vitamins, and complex carbs to the body.

May/June 2018

80

Nuts Whether you prefer almonds, walnuts, or cashews, nuts can be easily added to porridge, fruit, yogurt, or even savory dishes. Nuts are rich in pinolenic acid which is responsible for stimulating the production of hormones within the body and also responsible for appetite suppression.

Apples Eat it whole or slice it up on toast; apples are very beneficial in keeping hunger at bay. They are rich in fiber, minerals, and vitamins and are the perfect hunger suppressant.

Eggs Perhaps one of nature’s most versatile foods, especially for Suhoor, eggs can help you stay full for longer while providing essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to the body. H

A MODERN JAPANESE STREET FOOD DINING EXPERIENCE AT ONI

A new contemporary dining Japanese street food restaurant in Dubai— ONI brings its fresh produce and meats straight from the food markets of Hoikkaido; the second largest Japanese island to its kitchen where executive chef Mohammed Islam and his team work their culinary magic in their open kitchen. Decked out in black and beige with red lighting, ONI is set up as a modern space that exudes a chic ambiance. We were served two kinds of Japanese tacos; the truffled tuna/avocado and the truffled salmon/avocado, both encased in tiny crispy rice shells. Then the Hamachi Crudo— a beautifully plated yellowtail fish served with wasabi salsa and yuzupan froth—was a juxtaposition of textures and flavors in one dish.

Japanese ramen noodles and a soft boiled egg and was a meal in itself. The jumbo tiger shrimps came with a creamy yuzu beurre blanc sauce and went well with the vegetable yakisoba which was sautéed purple cabbage, onions, and carrots on top of spicy noodles. Staying true to Japanese tradition, desserts included the green tea fondant— a warm cake served with a scoop of ice cream and raspberry puree. And last, but not least, our favorite: the matcha milk cake— a creamy, cool cake that was a superb way to end this Japanese meal. The Verdict: ONI is a contemporary dining concept inspired by Japanese culture with dishes you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in Dubai. H Visit: ONI at the Shangri La Hotel, Dubai Contact: www.healthmagazine.ae The Rock Shrimp Dynamite was morsels of shrimp with a crispy outer shell, tender on the inside, coated with a delicious, slightly pungent sauce. Now my perennial favorites— the Nigiri redsnapper, tuna sashimi, salmon/shrimp rolls, and avocado/crab dynamite rolls. All of these were high in quality and ticked all the boxes for authenticity. We were presented with Kushiuyaki— a table grill with four skewers: asparagus, Yakiniku — Japanese beef short rib, Gindara— miso marinated black cod, and Negima— chicken with scallions. This was served with accompanying sauces for dipping. The authentic spicy ramen soup was loaded with tender chunks of beef simmered in a slow-cooked chicken broth topped with spicy May/June 2018

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

BARIATRIC SURGERY

Question: My husband is considering undergoing bariatric surgery for weight loss. Can you explain more about this procedure? Dr. Tamer Saafan, specialist general/ laparoscopic & bariatric surgeon responds, “Bariatric surgery is indicated in a patient whose BMI is greater than 35 with accompanying diseases such as diabetes or hypertension; or if the BMI is greater than 40. The most popular type these days is sleeve gastrectomy in which the patient will expect to lose 75 percent of his/ her excessive weight in the first 18 months. However, the gold standard procedure for weight loss is gastric bypass surgery in which the expected weight loss will be higher, but the patient will require vitamin supplements for life. Overall, bariatric surgery is very safe and is done laparoscopically with a one-day stay in the hospital. The patient can return back to a normal routine after five days.”

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS) AND DIET

Question: I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS and am slightly overweight. Are there any specific foods I should be avoiding in this condition? Dr. Shalini Somnath, specialist– obstetrics & gynecology responds, “Diet plays an important role in the management of the symptoms of PCOS, especially if you are a little overweight. You should eat a healthy balanced diet. This should include fruit, vegetables, and whole foods such as wholemeal bread, whole-grain cereals, brown rice, and whole-wheat pasta, lean meat, fish, and chicken. Avoid ‘white’ foods like white pasta, white bread, and so on, and instead, opt for high fiber/whole-grain substitutes. You should cut down the amount of sugar, salt, and caffeine that you consume. You should also avoid highly processed foods such as tinned products, breakfast cereals, snacks like chips and crisps, sweets, chocolates, and convenience meals such as ready to eat/microwave meals. In addition to the quality of the food, you should also pay attention to the timing of meals. Never skip breakfast. It is important to understand that there is no permanent cure for PCOS. However, many women manage their symptoms without medication, purely by adopting a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on regular exercise and appropriate diet.”

AGING SKIN

Question: How can I tell if I need fillers or a face lift? I am 55-yearsold? Dr. Guloro Mukhidinova, specialist dermatology responds, “A personalized consultation is necessary to determine this. Fillers are ideal in anyone who is starting to notice some skin laxity such as sagging skin, tired under eye area, and jowls along the jawline. Fillers promise results that last for 12 to 18 months and are used to fill in hollow temples and augment thin cheeks. When used appropriately, fillers can help stave off the need for facial surgery and are effective. Fillers are placed into around eight strategic lifting points in the face the cheeks, tear trough, nasolabial folds (smile lines), mouth corners, pre-jowl area, jawline, lower cheeks, and Marionette lines (running downwards from the corners of the mouth).”

People love to follow creative, active, and honest influencers whom they can relate to. With that said, brand affiliation is a must for a serious social media influencer.” ACHIEVING THAT PICTURE-PERFECT POST “Getting that perfect Instagram post is a lot of work, but the most important key to that is day light. Secondly is the right pose, and the third most important factor is a good camera. The rest, such as makeup and perfectly steamed attire, is as important, but it’s easier to do.” H Social media links: Instagram: @dianachipar Blog: www.dianachipar.com

WORLD VOICE DAY: SPEAKING ON THE JOB PUTS PROFESSIONALS AT RISK OF VOCAL DAMAGE US-based Cleveland Clinic’s Voice Center, says jobs that involve public speaking often end up damaging the vocal folds, sometimes called the vocal cords. These are the membranes that vibrate to give us the power of speech, with the three most common types of damage being vocal nodules, vocal hemorrhaging, and vocal polyps. Teachers, lawyers, and sports coaches, who consistently speak to large groups, are all on the danger list for professional voice disorders.

Teachers, sports coaches, and business executives are among the professionals that regularly put their ability to speak at risk by ‘misusing’ their voices at work, a leading international medical expert said on April 16 ahead of World Voice Day. Dr. Michael Benninger, M.D., head of the

“Where you consistently strain or overuse your voice, this can cause growths on the vocal folds, what are called vocal nodules, that make the vocal fold heavy,” explains Dr. Benninger. “You can think of these like callouses on your hands, and like callouses, they will usually fade with rest, and your voice will recover. Vocal nodules

rarely occur in men because of differences in anatomy.” Dr. Benninger says there are several steps people should consider to reduce their risk, particularly if they have already experienced voice problems. Where possible, anyone involved in public speaking should use a microphone to amplify their voice. Warming up before speaking, such as by humming, can reduce the risk of strain, and professional voice training or singing lessons can teach techniques for safely increasing the clarity and volume of speech. These include breathing techniques and maintaining the correct posture. Robert Gordon, class of 2020, said, “The ideas that have been showcased throughout the four year history of TEDxNYUAD have truly been important discussion topics as well as learning points from a pool of immensely diverse people. As the brilliant ideas outlined are pivotal to a successful TEDxNYUAD, it is the

job of the organizing team to select a theme that is encompassing, yet not generic.” He added, “This year’s theme, Bookmarks, was chosen because of its applicability to human lives. We believed bookmarks, similarly to the ones used in books, are noteworthy events in our lives that have helped us grow and serve as fundamental building blocks on which we reminisce when we are in times of struggle. The speakers were exclusively chosen from the student, faculty, and staff body of NYUAD based on their applications, in which they detailed their idea and its relevance to the theme.” May/June 2018
