FOREWORD I had the pleasure of initiating 525 students in various health professions at the university. I welcome all the newcomers and assure you all that the university will continue to support and encourage the many life-enriching events, activities and programs which provide you with a well-rounded educational experience.

I am very pleased to inform you all that by the Grace of Almighty, the Thumbay Group has stepped into its 25th year of operations in this great country. While reiterating our commitment to excellence in all our endeavors, I would like to personally thank everyone for their support and patronage for all our activities over the years. We are looking forward to continuing our efforts in realizing our goals. It is my pleasure to interact with you all. With the advent of a new academic year at the university, we are very pleased that the Gulf Medical University remains as the first choice for prospective students to pursue their dreams of becoming healthcare professionals. Evidently so, as it has recently become one of the latest international institutions to receive global accreditation from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the UK’s independent quality body and a global leader in quality assurance for higher education.

I am happy with the tremendous response received for the Thumbay Group Healthcare Summer Festival, which benefited over 15000 people through various competitions, special offers and services provided by all the group hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. Thumbay Medical & Dental Specialty Hospital celebrated its 10th anniversary this month. I wish to congratulate the team of doctors and staff for their dedicated efforts in offering excellent services over the last decade. Thumbay Labs has launched ‘Prevention is better than Cure’ Campaign to promote overall good health and immunity which is crucial in the war against COVID-19. The initiative is designed to encourage society to take charge of their health by employing proactive strategies. I am happy to inform you all that Thumbay Clinics has launched a campaign entitled ‘Wellness for All’ which brings easy and affordable healthcare packages to everyone, with an aim to improve the health and wellness of residents in the UAE. The health packages are devised differently for different groups of people – from children to adults,

fitness enthusiasts, and older age residents as per their requirements, and at reasonable prices. It's my pleasure to inform all our readers that Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University was awarded the prestigious Honorary Fellow of AMEE (FAMEE), an International Association for Medical Education in EUROPE- 2021, which is the biggest association having more than 3000 educators in various health professions. Thumbay Group inked partnership with PayBy to power the cashless ecosystem at ambitious Thumbay Medicity. PayBy will support Thumbay Group’s digital transformation with its mobile payment-based projects, to build a cashless and smart community with enhanced experiences for all stakeholders. In its endeavor to benefit the university students and make Gulf Medical University as the fittest campus, Body & Soul Health Club and Spa has launched special packages that include free assessments, classes, and personal training. This will help students improve their personality and maintain good health. As we welcome the most awaited global event Expo2020, Thumbay Group is looking forward to being a part of the event by hosting some international scientific events in the coming months. Details will be announced soon. Watch out for the special edition of this magazine covering Expo2020. Until my next interaction, best wishes and happy times.

STAYING BREAST AWARE With October being officially recognized as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ month, HEALTH speaks with consultant breast surgeon Dr. Rita Daaboul to learn more about the disease and how women can make themselves more breast aware.

Oct/Nov 2021

8

Very early signs The earliest signs of possible breast cancer are only picked up on screening tests, explains Dr. Daaboul. “These include microcalcification changes on a mammogram, or a small growth seen on a mammogram, or breast ultrasound which may as yet be too small to detect by touch.”

Self-breast exam and why it matters According to Dr. Daaboul, it is recommended that every woman should self-examine her own breasts at least once every two months, preferably after her menstrual period, as that is the time when the breasts are the least lumpy and the least tender. She elaborates, “The idea is that over time, the woman would learn what her breasts normally feel like, so that if ever there is any change from the normal, she can recognize this early and seek a consultation with a breast surgeon for further professional assessment, as soon as possible.” To check the breasts, the woman should look at her breasts in the mirror and then feel her breasts for lumps. “When checking the breasts in the mirror, she should look for any changes in the size or shape of the breasts, any dimpling or puckering or any skin changes, and also anything that may be different about the nipples,” she tells, and she should then feel her breasts at first standing up, and then lying down, especially if there are any concerns. She advises that the

woman should use her flattened fingers to feel each part of the breast. This can be done in circles, all around the breast, in clockwise fashion, and lastly to feel the central area of the nipple.

Risk factors

In terms of age, Dr. Daaboul points out that the older a woman gets, the riskier it is to develop breast cancer. “The incidence of breast cancer is 1 in 8 women over their lifetime,” she says, while worldwide, the riskiest age is between 50 and 70 years of age. However, in the UAE, younger women tend to develop more advanced breast cancer, for an as yet unknown reason. As such, she recommends screening should begin earlier than in Western nations. “A woman is recommended to start mammographic screening from 40 years of age, and for a mammogram to be performed every 2 years.”

The latest treatment modalities The most common treatment for breast cancer, reveals Dr. Daaboul, in simplified terms, is a combination of treatments which include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal treatment, and other biological treatments. “This is why breast cancer is treated by multiple specialists that discuss cases together and treat the patients’ in what is called a multidisciplinary team,” she says.

Lifestyle tips for women While everyone has a certain degree of susceptibility to breast cancer, there are some straightforward lifestyle factors we can all undertake to lessen and avoid the risks, including: Diet Eat a healthy diet, rich in vegetables, fruit and natural, high-fiber whole foods. Avoid bad fats, red meat, and highly processed and junk foods. Weight Maintain healthy weight, especially as you approach old age. Chemicals Avoid toxic chemicals both at home and work. Exercise and activity Undertaking a regular exercise regime will certainly benefit overall health. Studies show that moderate weekly physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer by around 20 percent. Adequate vitamin D and sun exposure. Early pregnancy and breastfeeding is a proven preventative. Mental health Maintain a positive outlook which is proven to boost the immune system and works in both prevention and in better outcomes in those who are fighting cancer. H

GETTING FIT AT 50:

WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT

This year, the UAE is celebrating its 50th Jubilee and with the Dubai Fitness Challenge launching on October 29, there has never been a better time to get fit, and enjoy your 50s, 60, 70s and beyond.

Oct/Nov 2021

10

50 IS THE NEW 40

Most of us have heard the phrase: “50 is the new 40”, and in fact, there is actually scientific evidence to support this. According to an in-depth scientific study by the Jama Network Open, getting fit in your 50s can be as beneficial as

starting early, and can have a transformative effect on your overall health, which can last for decades. And in honor of the UAE’s 50th Jubilee this year, the Dubai Fitness Challenge offers several impactful ways you can get fit in your fifth decade.

COMBAT MUSCLE LOSS

A key difference between getting in shape in your 20s, compared to doing so in your 50s is that later in life you need to take great care of your muscles. Resistance training is a great way to make sure you are supporting your muscle health, bones and joints while getting in shape. This can include anything from Pilates, to exercising with dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells at the gym. Be sure to consult with a professional first, so they can ensure you are using the equipment correctly - as bad posture or the wrong move can do far more harm than good. There are also thousands of free fitness classes for Dubai Fitness Challenge, so it’s a great opportunity to find the type of class you enjoy.

MAINTAIN A RECORD OF YOUR DIET

A healthy lifestyle starts in the kitchen and in order to make meaningful change, the best way to start is to make a record of what is being consumed on a daily basis, noting down the nutritional content in each meal. Try doing this for two weeks, and also make a note of how you feel after each meal—sluggish, energetic, or refreshed. Also, as we get older, our metabolism

changes. We don’t need to consume as many calories as we did when we were younger, and it can also affect our ability to digest certain foods. It’s also important when you are trying to strengthen muscle mass to make sure to eat enough protein. Once you’ve taken an in-depth look at what you are eating, book an appointment with a recognized dietician, nutritionist or doctor to discuss your current diet, and any changes you should make to assist your health goals.

friends, families, colleagues and communities together to improve their health and wellbeing with 30 days of fun and fitness. Featuring a packed calendar of activities and events across the city including Dubai Run and Dubai Ride, this year’s Challenge runs from October 29 to November 27, 2021. H For fitness inspiration, advice, virtual classes and fun ways to find your 30 x 30, visit www. dubaifitnesschallenge.com

THE COVID-19

DELTA VARIANT:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

OVERVIEW

With widespread vaccination and SOPs in place, many of us were starting to relax about the pandemic. However, when news about the Delta variant—a highly contagious SARSCoV-2 virus strain was announced, it sent many of us back into fear mode. Dr. Baljinder Singh, Head of the Emergency Department clarifies the facts about this variant and how we can take precaution.

Oct/Nov 2021

12

Delta is described by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as more transmissible than the common cold and influenza, in addition to the viruses that trigger MERS, SARS, and Ebola. Dr. Singh explains, “Delta is the name given to the COVID-19 variant that was first detected in India in December 2020. It is believed to be 50 to 60 percent more infectious than the original and Alpha strain, as per British Authorities.”

SYMPTOMS

According to Dr. Singh, the Delta variant may have slightly different symptoms as compared to the original strain and the Alpha variant because

higher than previous variants as per a Chinese study, points out Dr. Singh. “There is around 35 percent increase in hospitalizations due to the Delta variant in the US as per the CDC and the majority of the hospitalizations and COVID-19 related deaths are occurring in the unvaccinated people.” Protection from COVID-19 infection is the same and includes following proper hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and keeping safe distances. Seeking medical advice if any symptoms arise and to go for full vaccination as per your local medical guidelines.

SCREENING AND TREATMENT

There is no special test for the Delta variant and the COVID PCR test is still used to test, he says, but the positive COVID PCR tests can undergo genetic analysis that can confirm if it is the Delta variant.

people may have antibodies from a previous infection or vaccination and due to the mutation of the virus. “This variant has proven to be more easily transmissible,” he says, and in fact, the Deltavariant COVID -19 has more of the common-cold like symptoms, including sorethroat, sneezing, and fever, but cough and loss of smell are not that common. A headache and runny nose are common,

he tells, and people may think they have a common cold with headache and not COVID, thereby unknowingly spreading the infection. Other symptoms include hearing impairment, gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and blood clots.

THE PROBLEM

The Delta variant is more worrisome because the viral load is around one thousand times

The treatment is the same regardless of the infectious variant. “Mild to moderate infections are managed at home with symptomatic treatment and severe infections require hospitalization,” he says, with certain antivirals and monoclonal antibody medications administered for moderate to severe infections along with corticosteroids, anti-thrombotics, high-flow oxygen, and ventilation. Understanding Eczema:

Atopic Dermatitis Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a common chronic skin disease which can occur at any age, but is more common in children. And while around 7.5 to 22.5 percent of people in the Arabian Peninsula suffer from this non-contagious skin condition, many don’t understand what it entails. Dr. Jaya Mehta explains more.

WHAT IT MEANS The term atopic, defines Dr. Mehta, means a group of conditions that are linked by their underlying cause – which is a special type of allergic hypersensitivity reaction or exaggerated IgE-mediated immune response that occurs upon exposure to certain allergens and triggers. She elaborates, “These atopic conditions include atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma, and hay fever. There is a strong association among these as it has been observed approximately that Oct/Nov 2021

14

about half of the patients with severe eczema/atopic dermatitis eventually develop asthma and about two-thirds develop allergic rhinitis.”

WHAT HAPPENS According to Dr.Mehta, in healthy individuals, the outermost layer of the skin, also known as epidermis, acts as a primary barrier between the body and the outside environment. “It not only prevents entry of harmful pathogens and toxins inside the body, but also

helps in retention of water in the skin that is essential for maintaining skin hydration.” Essentially, in eczema/atopic dermatitis, the skin barrier becomes dysfunctional, resulting in dehydrated, dry, cracked skin. In these patients’, their weaker skin barrier is easily penetrable by the triggers that induce exaggerated immune response, causing skin inflammation. The dysfunctional skin barrier also increases susceptibility to infection.

POSSIBLE CAUSES Although the exact cause of atopic dermatitis still continues to elude us, Dr. Mehta adds that undoubtedly, genetics plays an important role in its development. “This is based on the fact that people with personal or family history of eczema or other atopic conditions are more likely to develop it,” she says. “In these genetically predisposed people, certain environmental factors can act as triggers to cause flare of the eczema symptoms.”

history of similar symptoms or other allergic diseases (asthma and seasonal allergies) are suggestive of the diagnosis.” If still unsure, allergy testing and patch testing may be advised.

Reduce inflammation, irritation and itching by application of topical steroids once or twice daily as prescribed to help reduce inflammation and moisturize skin.

MANAGEMENT

Oral antihistamines to reduce itching.

While there is no cure available for eczema/atopic dermatitis, the good news,

Wet dressings may be advised to help hydrate the skin, reduce itching and loosen the crusting.

reveals Dr. Mehta, is this can be successfully treated and managed with regular moisturizing and medications. The symptoms can be treated and flare-ups can be prevented as follows:

In case of infection, depending on the type of infection, antibacterial, antifungal or antiviral medications may be used.

SYMPTOMS The common symptoms, she points out, include: intense itching that tends to be worse at nighttime, skin dryness and scaly patches, patches of inflamed skin, small, raised bumps, cracking, weeping or crusting lesions, skin darkening and thickening, and skin infection. Not surprisingly, the majority of individuals with eczema/atopic dermatitis develop symptoms before age five years. Dr. Mehta explains, “The disease course is marked by periodic flares and remissions of symptoms. While a great majority of these children cease to be symptomatic by adolescence, a few may show symptoms throughout the adulthood.”

DIAGNOSIS Diagnosis can be arrived at based on detailed medical history and appearance of the rashes, she says. “Typically, history of recurrent itchy lesions that initially began during childhood, worsening of symptoms upon exposure to certain triggers, and a family

HYDRATE THE SKIN

Use fragrance-free emollients, such as coconut oil, petroleum jelly, thick moisturizers and creams, to hydrate the skin and prevent dryness. They can be applied once or twice daily and they work best when applied after bath.

PREDIABETES IS ON THE RISE IN THE UAE

While prediabetes is not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes, unless some immediate lifestyle changes are made, it likely will develop into type 2 diabetes. HEALTH speaks with Dr. Ihsan Al Marzooqi, Emirati Digital Therapeutics entrepreneur to learn more.

DEFINED

According to Dr. Al Marzooqi, prediabetes is a serious health condition caused by the body not responding in the normal way to insulin produced by the pancreas. “Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone that lets blood sugar into cells to use as energy,” he says, and prediabetes usually occurs in people who have some insulin resistance or whose cells aren’t making enough insulin to keep blood Oct/Nov 2021

glucose within the normal range. A prediabetic patient’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He adds, “Eventually, without enough insulin, the extra glucose stays in the bloodstream and over time can develop into type 2 diabetes.”

IN THE UAE

With no clear symptoms in the early stages, he points out that prediabetes can go years

without ever being detected and it’s currently affecting around 1.2 M people in the Emirates. “Prediabetes is rising in the region and the number of people impacted is alarming,” he tells, and this silent health crisis is affecting almost 15 percent of the UAE’s population; it’s most prevalent among UAE nationals, with around 19 percent of Emiratis and 15 percent of expatriates living with the condition.

RISK FACTORS

Individuals over age 30, who are overweight, have a relative with type 2 diabetes, have a family history of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or elevated blood fats and who are physically active less than three times a week, are those who are most at risk and should be screened as per the UAE guidelines, explains Dr. Al Marzooqi. “In some cases, the disease only reveals itself and its long-term implications when patients’ need urgent medical attention.”

asymptomatic adults, or the second option is to do a blood test,” he explains. “The key to reversing prediabetes is really all about education on the lifestyle choices that are needed and increasing

awareness about how the foods we eat and the levels of physical activity we partake in, can dramatically impact our health.” H

DANGEROUS REPERCUSSIONS

Those unaware they are living with it could be leaving it too late to treat and end up with a life changing chronic condition and serious and long-lasting health problems, he says, warning the community that prediabetes almost always leads to type 2 diabetes and those with the condition are at increased risk of heart disease and stroke if it continues to be untreated. Prediabetes shows very little symptoms until it is in its advanced stages; therefore, it’s recommended that those who are most at risk should get tested.

THE GOOD NEWS

The good news, he tells, is that prediabetes is reversible, type 2 diabetes is not, although it can go into remission, so proactivity in the treatment of this condition is critical. “There are two ways of testing, first is to do an informal assessment of risk factors, usually best for

A One-on-One with

Salama Mohamed A master content creator, an Emirati mega influencer, and now the head of her own beauty brand Peacefull, Saadiya Ahmad met with Salama Mohamed to understand more about her brand and the many roles she plays.

The biggest challenges as an influencer

“So far, I’ve had such a great and supportive community. It’s where I found like-minded individuals with whom I could be open and honest about my journey. It has helped me create a space where I can be my authentic self. That being said, as with anything, there will always be negative aspects here and there, but the positivity throughout has outweighed the negative. The key is to not dwell on any negativity. All in all, my experience has been positive.”

Salama’s message about vitiligo

“The first step to self-love and being at peace is all about perspective. Switching your outlook on skin and accepting your unique qualities and ultimately making it your superpower can be hard, but is possible. Surround yourself with love and positivity. Your skin is a blessing. Don’t be hard on yourself or your skin, love, and nurture it.”

Juggling multiple roles

“Wow, I haven’t cracked the code yet, if you have any tips, I’m all ears. But really, I have a great support system around me, and that’s why I’m able to juggle different things throughout the day.”

Personal wellness

“I do yoga and Pilates, which help to build muscle and strengthen areas such as your core. I usually try to get in at least two sessions a week. I also go on walks in the evening around my community, I’ve found that it’s a great way to de-stress and clear my head. That being said, I always make sure I’m eating good, balanced meals. Now I won’t deny myself a burger or pizza, but I don’t eat these all the time.”

Brand beginnings

“I’ve been blessed with vitiligo and sensitive skin from early on, so I’ve always been on the hunt for skincare products that would provide my skin with what it needed, but always came up short, especially given the climate we live in. Eventually, I stumbled upon Korean skincare, and I have never looked back ever since. The products completely changed my relationship with skincare.

I swear by the 10-steps Korean skincare routine, it changed my skin. Through this journey, I discovered the healing powers of Korean active ingredients, and that ultimately led me to create Peacefull.”

The inspiration

“All in all, I would say the journey to launching Peacefull started out of necessity because I needed products that would help my sensitive skin and after finding Korean skincare and active ingredients, I wanted to share formulas that work with my global community because I truly believe we all deserve good skincare.”

Peacefull’s message

“With Peacefull, our message isn’t just one of self-love, but also highlighting the importance of openness, tolerance, inclusivity, and hospitality. Everyone on our campaign is a testament to this. We want to embrace the world and everyone for who they truly are. Our brand is as inclusive as this region is and our aim is to represent everyone and bring them into a Peacefull space every single day.” H

REVERSE THE

AGING PROCESS WITH TEOXANE

A manufacturer of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers and skincare products, Teoxane is a key global player in aesthetic medicine and skincare. HEALTH met with Teoxane’s Chief Scientific Officer/Plastic Surgeon Dr. Patrick Trevidic who discusses their range of highly effective hyaluronic acidbased dermal fillers designed to treat wrinkles, give volume to the face, and improve skin quality.

CONSUMER INCREASE AND THE PANDEMIC

With global government mandates for wearing masks during the pandemic, Dr. Trevidic assumed there would be a decrease in the demand for the aesthetic fillers. He elaborates, “In fact, it was quite the opposite for several reasons. First, people were at home with their spouses and families, prompting many to pay more attention to their physical appearance.” Also, suddenly Zoom became integral in everyone’s lives—from meetings to parties. “Zoom is similar to a mirror and creates facial distortion,” he says, so, a person on an early morning Zoom meeting sans makeup may wonder what happened to their face. Another key factor during the pandemic is that downtime, including bruising and swelling became irrelevant. Dr. Trevidic

points out that the patient who was keen to plump up her lips, but worried about post treatment bruising was able to undergo the procedure because of the face mask.

THE SELFIE CULTURE

Though aesthetic procedures definitely boomed during the pandemic, Dr. Trevidic reminds us that the boom was very much apparent before the pandemic because of the selfie culture. “Like Zoom, selfies distort the face to a certain degree, so younger people and the millennials are noticing imperfections, driving the demand for aesthetic procedures,” he says, and as per their generation, glossy, photo shopped media images have raised the bar on beauty standards.

FINDING A BALANCE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

With TikTok and Instagram being an intrinsic part of life, Dr. Trevidic is cautious about the trends disseminated from social media platforms. “There is better and there is worse on social media; finding that balance can be tricky,” he says. “For Teoxane, a Swiss company launched in Geneva in 2003 by Madame Valérie Taupin, solid, evidence-based medical aesthetics is at its core and it is this scientific integrity that has always underpinned Teoxane.”

HYALURONIC ACID

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body’s connective tissue. According to Dr. Trevidic, our body contains HA in the skin and the eyes, and it is a core part of the structure of our skin. “But during the aging process, we lose both HA and collagen,” he says. “HA was first used for nasolabial folds around 30 years ago by a Swedish chemist who discovered how to inject HA to reverse the anti-aging process.” While our naturally occurring HA is in long-chain form, it had to be mixed/embedded in order to fight our body’s naturally occurring enzymes that destroy our HA. About 10 years later, researchers concluded that one type of HA could not effectively manage all problems, and required a scale of HA products, ranging from liquid to cohesive consistencies.

TEOSYAL’S RHA®

Then six years ago in a lab, Dr. Trevidic reveals that the discovery was made on developing a preserved network that mimics our natural shape with a long chain to enable movement. “This was the step forward and enabled the scale of products of RHA®, 1 to 4. “RHA® has four grades to allow us to treat all kinds of lines, skin quality, volume, and so on, depending on the patient,” he explains. “Teosyal RHA® is the first dermal filler specifically designed with high strength and high stretch properties developed with the objective of mimicking the natural HA in our skin.” Moreover, Teoxane’s technology is constantly improving and their labs are continuously innovating products for the future.

BEST TO START EARLY

Some patients' come for beautification, for example, to plump up the lips, while others may come for rejuvenation. These are the classical demands patients’ have, says Dr. Trevidic. He elaborates, “Now, after our experience in all realms of aesthetics ranging from lasers to fillers, we discovered that if a patient starts early when he/she has fine lines, it can be treated easily. However, if the patient has deep lines, it will definitely be harder to treat.” So, he recommends starting early as not only will less product be required, the outcome will be better and also less noticeable.

THE DEMAND

A common misconception from consumers is that clever marketing of aesthetic procedures is what drives demand, but the reality of today’s social media and selfie culture paradigm is that younger women and millennials are promoting HA in younger age groups. Dr. Trevidic adds, “It’s not only the doctors who are creating a need, but the demand is coming from the patients’ who are now seeking out certain procedures because friends are doing it; this is driving this demand. Yet, despite this demand for procedures at an earlier age, Dr. Trevidic warns that patient selection must be judicious. “We must be discerning and not accept all patients’ randomly.” H

IS WORKING REMOTELY TAKING A TOLL ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH? According to a recent survey, 4 out of 5 workers find it hard to ‘shut off’ in the evenings while 45 percent of respondents say they feel less healthy mentally while working from home. To shed light on the impact of working remotely on mental health, HEALTH speaks with Dr. Ali Razzak, Consultant Family Medicine and Aesthetics expert to learn more.

Dr. Ali Razzak Oct/Nov 2021

22

The shift According to Dr. Razzak, working from home has led to huge changes in the culture of working and what is nowadays acceptable. “In some instances, it has been very beneficial to workers as there is a lot of evidence that much in the way of resources and time can be saved by remote working,” he says, however, the flipside to this is that many workers now find it difficult to separate their working and personal space and lives apart, both physically and mentally. A new culture is also developing where people are expected to be available late into the evening at the end of their phones and emails. He emphasizes that it is healthy to have a clear boundary between the two. “Certainly I am seeing more patients' with stress and anxiety related to these new working styles.”

Put mental health first Studies are continuing to show the benefits of prioritizing mental health in order to be more productive in the workplace. He elaborates, “Some countries have even started to introduce a shorter working week. I certainly am a big supporter of putting mental health first. That can mean taking a day off for the sake of your mental health or just taking a break/ short holiday when you start feeling overwhelmed. The important thing is to listen to your body and be mindful and in tune with your mental health and to know when it’s time for a break.”

Making it work If you are spending the majority of your time working from home, he advises that it is still very important to maintain a regular routine to your days. “This would involve you trying to wake up and sleep at the same time every day, having a healthy and balanced diet, taking regular breaks, and also incorporating a regular exercise regime into your working week,” he explains. “Having a hobby, spending time with friends and family are also extremely important fun and natural ways to recharge.” Sleep is also vastly underestimated in its ability to help you recharge and maintain optimal physical and mental performance – be sure to aim to get around seven to eight hours of quality uninterrupted sleep. H

The ramifications “Difficulty in switching off after a long work day can lead to a number of physical and mental health issues,” he explains. “Being able to relax and have a comforting routine in the evening prior to bed time is an essential part of the winding down process that helps trigger the brain to go into sleep mode.” When this process is interfered with, people will develop stress, anxiety and insomnia. Sleep is an essential part of keeping neurotransmitter levels in the brain healthy, and deprivation coupled with increased stress hormones will affect mood, memory, and physical performance. Over time, Dr. Razzak points out that it may increase the risk of various cancers, cardiovascular disease, and depression, not to mention the disruption it can cause to family life. Oct/Nov 2021

EXPO 2020 FEATURE

MALAYSIA’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: EXPO 2020’S NET-ZERO CARBON PAVILION

Designed as a Rainforest Canopy pavilion with the theme ‘Energizing Sustainability’, the Malaysia pavilion will provide visitors an immersive experience of being in a rainforest. And with today’s pressing need to address climate change, HEALTH takes a closer look at Expo 2020’s Malaysia pavilion.

THE MESSAGE Overall, the pavilion aims to inspire visitors through an immersive experience of Malaysian hospitality, the biodiversity of the rainforest and the country’s efforts at long-term sustainability across various industries.

THE SEGMENTS The pavilion is sectioned into four segments with subthemes. The first segmentEnergizing Today-will take visitors through a narrative about their forest conservation Oct/Nov 2021

and sustainable agricommodity and how it has shaped their socio-economic development. The middle segmentEnergizing Tomorrowshowcases Malaysia’s commitment to become a developed and highincome nation, driving the agenda of carbon reduction and climate change with science, technology, and innovation as the main thrusts. The third segmentEnergizing Harmonyencapsulates how Malaysians

of diverse cultures, traditions, ethnicities, and languages live harmoniously, contributing to the nation’s progress, unity and stability. And the final segmentEnergizing Business-is a business center where the 26 weekly thematic trade and business programs will take place.

SUSTAINABILITY Of the three sub-themes of Expo 2020-Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity, Malaysia has chosen Sustainability. At Expo 2020,

they are presenting to the world their long-standing vision on sustainable development and will continue telling their stories of development anchored firmly on the principles of sustainability.

A NET ZERO CARBON PAVILION Despite being a small, merging nation, Malaysia’s pavilion is Net Zero Carbon; in fact, the first such initiative for Expo 2020 Dubai. They want to ensure their participation does not contribute to GHGs by offsetting carbon emitted.

To account for the emissions, three stages for calculation have been identified which are materials and energy usage during construction stage (embodied carbon), operations during event and decommissioning of the pavilion after the event. The

embodied energy involves majorly used materials in the stages of cradle-to-gate, endof-life disposal, and recovery.

GREEN FEATURES In line with the sustainability theme, it is only natural that their participation is climate-friendly. The pavilion is a high-efficiency green building and the green features will contribute to 20 percent energy savings. On the roof are 40 pieces of solar photovoltaic panel with an output of 12,000kWh throughout the Expo period which will contribute to 10 percent of the pavilion energy requirement. Other climate-friendly features are in the area of energy efficiency through LED lightings, natural lighting, self-shading and water harvesting features. The façade of the pavilion is made from certified sustainable meranti timber from the Malaysia forest.

Use of concrete is minimized and steel construction is used so that materials can be recycled after the pavilion is dismantled.

THE #MYBUTTERFLYEFFECT CAMPAIGN The ‘chaos theory’ is about the way nature works and is pioneered by MIT Professor Edward Lorenz. It suggests that the flap of a butterfly’s wings might ultimately cause a tornado, or in other words, small causes in one place may have momentous effects in another area. Therefore, their #MyButterfly Effect social media campaign is based on the premise that one small act can create a ripple effect elsewhere and that is what they aim to create at Expo 2020 – to cause a big impact on people by inspiring them to take sustainable actions. Dining Out Rhain, The Conrad Hotel One of the most aesthetically delightful spaces I’ve visited in ages with layered gold bulb chandeliers adding depth of light, while log shaped tables infused an earthiness. The flavors here are between Turkish and Western, with their core specialty being premium-grade steaks, lamb chops, sushi and seafood. We started with their signature Rhain salad—goat’s cheese, fresh figs, walnuts, fresh pomegranate, and lettuce, topped with a balsamic glaze, followed by a beautifully presented shrimp cocktail, served molecular

From the start to finish, the servers and chefs are slicing, dicing, and cooking with a flourish. Our Wagyu beef sushi was seared to a crisp in front of us and then garnished with avocado and cheese. Our shared main was their huge signature rack of lamb, sliced ceremoniously at the table by our chef. This was served with mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and asparagus spears. Thumbay Group and Albatha Group/MPC Join Forces to Augment UAE’s Pharmacy Sector

Leading healthcare distributor MPC has a longstanding track record of more than 50 years of market presence in health, pharma, and consumer care. While renowned business conglomerate Thumbay Group has a diversified portfolio across 20 sectors, including clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies in both the UAE and India. Both have have merged their forces in the pharmacy business, enabling MPC to oversee full operational control of all Thumbay pharmacies. To learn more, Saadiya Ahmad meets with Mark James, CEO of MPC Healthcare.

According to James, MPC’s core strengths stem from being part of the Albatha Group. He elaborates, “Being one of the larger divisions, we receive tremendous support

which in turn, provides us stability. Also, our local ownership enables us to take a long-term view of the many decisions we make, as our founders are fully invested in the UAE. This bolsters our ability to look forward and is one of the reasons we wanted

Regarding values, MPC has been in existence for over 50 years, therefore, have a very good understanding of the UAE market, particularly in healthcare. “Our solid reputation in the market stems from our values,” he says, attributing MPC’s 50 years of history. The people who built MPC behaved in a certain way that made it successful, says James, and they were customer focused, maintained their promises, and were flexible as the market changed. “My role is to be the custodian for that set of values and protect them for the future,” he explains. Even if the market changes, MPC’s strategies might change, but their company culture is deeply rooted in their DNA and will not change.

local communities and this is why Thumbay Group was one of the most attractive groups to work with. He explains, “Most of the Thumbay retail sector is located within their hospitals’ or in a local community pharmacy setting. Most people visit a pharmacy based upon a connection with an individual within that particular pharmacy. And this is what MPC is keen to promote. “There’s a lot of alignment on what the role of the pharmacy is,” tells James, and it’s not just to sell retail products, but to support the patient. “We need to ensure we have the right people in the best locations, and we then need to ensure the stock and products available are correct for the type of pharmacy we are trying to promote.”

James firmly believes it’s not about doing things cheaply, but cleverly. “The key to reducing cost is to look into prevention which is less expensive than treating a fully developed illness,” he says. So lifestyle shifts are important, but also, diagnostics are vital. Developing a more clinical approach to understanding patients’ in the pharmacy can enable this preventive approach. “For instance, if a patient is exhibiting signs of type 2 diabetes, but has not been diagnosed, the pharmacist can identify the precursor red flags of type 2 diabetes and can therefore, suggest to undergo a quick test to confirm.

EARLY INTERVENTIONAL APPROACH

Also, clinical interventions can be augmented through the pharmacies, remarks James. “Another is compliance as statistically, 50 percent of medicines globally are prescribed and dispensed, but the course is not completed. “Convincing patients’ to complete their medication course will, in turn, improve healthcare standards,” he explains. “Overall, there are enormous possibilities of what pharmacies can do.”

STOMACH SPASMS IN TEENAGER

URINARY INCONTINENCE

Question: My 14-year-old daughter has suddenly developed stomach spasms. We have tried all medications. Could this be IBS?

Question: I had my second baby six months ago and am suddenly having issues with urinary incontinence. I’m only 35 and worried. How can I treat this?

Dr. Rimzim Gupta, Specialist Pediatrician

Dr. Maria Karakoulaki, German Board Certified Aesthetic and Functional Gynecologist responds, “Urinary incontinence is a very common problem especially among women post-childbirth. During pregnancy, the pelvic floor muscles weaken as a result of the weight of the growing fetus. This can lead to urinary incontinence, or stress urinary incontinence and leakage, which can range from mild to severe. Non-surgical or conservative modes of urinary incontinence treatment are the first to be implemented, with the first option being physical therapy, also known as Kegel exercises. This works to strengthen the weakened pelvic floor muscles through repetitive movements of contracting and relaxing the sphincter muscles at intervals. Additionally, there is a new FDA approved nonsurgical urinary incontinence treatment known as the Emsella Chair (also known as The Kegel Throne), which performs the same function as Kegel exercises, but this time at a faster and more effective rate. The chair releases electromagnetic fields which stimulate the weakened pelvic floors muscles by causing 11,300 intense contractions in 30 minutes. This particular therapy is done in 6 sessions, twice a week for 3 weeks.”

responds, “There is a good chance that she may have functional abdominal pain which although is severe and difficult to respond to medication, is usually not caused by any serious medical condition. If she is having this type of abdominal cramps recurrently, especially if triggered by some emotional disturbance and associated with diarrhea or constipation, then this might be due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Or if the abdominal pain is periodical, it may related to menstrual cycles. But if it is recurrent, but of recent onset or stand-alone episode then the other physical causes of abdominal pain needs to be ruled out; medical causes like gastritis, pancreatitis, colitis, enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), renal stones, or acute surgical causes like acute appendicitis. Therefore, as there are varied causes of abdominal pain, she will require consultation with the pediatrician for proper history, examination, and if required, relevant investigations to reach to a proper diagnosis and provide her the appropriate treatment.”

REPEATED TONSILLITIS

Question: My son gets repeated sore throats and throat infections. Should we have his tonsils removed to prevent this problem?

Dr. Nisha Vijayan, Specialist ENT responds, “If your child gets a lot of tonsil infections, known as tonsillitis, an ENT specialist might advise removing the tonsils. Tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils) may be indicated if your child has any of the following: recurrent throat infections with a frequency of at least seven episodes in the past year, or at least five episodes a year for two consecutive years, or at least three episodes a year for three years in a row. Each episode of sore throat should be accompanied by one/more of the following: temperature greater than 38.3°C, cervical adenopathy, tonsillar exudate, or a throat swab that tests positive for group A betahemolytic streptococcus, enlarged tonsils that block the upper airway resulting in impairment of normal breathing/snoring causing trouble sleeping at night - obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (OSDB)/sleep apnea (OSA). Also, a throat infection severe enough to cause a peritonsillar abscess (an area of pus and swelling, behind the tonsils.) Tonsillectomy may be no better than taking a wait-and-see approach for children who have only a few throat infections a year. For some children, tonsillectomy can greatly improve the quality of life. Talk with your doctor about the possible benefits of surgery for your child as well as the costs and risks of the procedure.”
