FOREWORD

Dear Readers, I am delighted to connect with you once again. Although hectic, we have had some exciting times with lots of events across all verticals of Thumbay group. Recently I was in Durban, South Africa to participate as a key note speaker in the 37th Annual Medical Convention of The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA]. I had a great time interacting with leading healthcare leaders and businessmen from various parts of the world. I am happy to inform our readers that His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman inaugurated the new Innovation and Research Centre and the Thumbay Institute of Precision Medicine and Translational Research (TIPM&TR) at the Gulf Medical University. We are proud to announce the new expansion plans of our hospitals which were unveiled by H.E. Humaid Al Qutami, Chairman and Director General of Dubai Health Authority. We will be adding 100 beds, 45 clinics, and 5 centers of excellence by 2021. The first center of excellence in Orthopedics – OrthoSpine Center was recently inaugurated at the Thumbay Hospital, Dubai. Thumbay Group’s Healthcare and Retail divisions have expanded their networks of state-of-the-art family clinics and pharmacies respectively, by opening new Thumbay Clinics and Thumbay Pharmacies in Fujairah and Dubai. I wish to congratulate my son Akbar for taking the initiative to launch Thumbay Group Healthcare Division’s second Multi Specialty ‘Day Care Hospital’ at University City Road, Sharjah in addition to Rolla, where the first day care facility was launched earlier this year. Thumbay Hospital, Hyderabad was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister of the State of Telangana H. E. Mahmood Ali Khan along with the state Health Minister H.E. Dr. C. Laxma Reddy. Other dignitaries included Members of the State Assembly, healthcare authorities, and representatives from various associations who were also present on the occasion. In another CSR initiative of our group, Thumbay Hospital signed an MOU with Sharjah Charity International to provide healthcare services to the employees of Sharjah Charity International and their dependents. To this effect, I have signed an MoU with H.E. Abdullah Sultan Bin Khadem, Executive Director of Sharjah Charity International.

Another entity of our group, The Terrace Restaurant has launched ‘Share a Meal Campaign’ to offer free food to the needy at all of its outlets. We welcome all to be a part of this noble initiative. Our annual Healthy Baby Contest & Exhibition 2017 was held at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai. Every year, the contest is held under my patronage and we are happy to receive very good response for the event which is growing every year. It attracted more than 400 babies and 3500 visitors. Thumbay Olympics was also a great week-long event that had more than 1500 employees of the Group, including 22 teams from across 18 business verticals competing in 24 games. I was very happy to witness great sportsmanship among the contestants. We will be inviting other corporates to be a part of Thumbay Olympics 2018 and we expect over 3000 participants in the 2018 edition. Similarly, Gulf Medical University’s Annual Sports Festival 2017, which is the largest inter-university sports festival in the region, attracted more than 2000 students from 28 different colleges and universities, in 226 events across 10 categories. More than 2000 people attended the annual Global Day 2017 organized by Gulf Medical University, which provides students a platform to display the essence of their ethnicities and cultures. With a motive to spread awareness about various lifestyle-related diseases, a special fun run was organized by Body & Soul Health Club and Spa in Ajman. The marathon is aimed to engage the community to participate in a healthy and fun event to promote healthy lifestyle practices and underline the importance of regular physical activity among the residents of the UAE. A conference on ‘Recent Trends in Women’s Health’, Conference on Challenges of Change: Health Insurance Trends in 2017, a workshop on the Recent Concepts in Shoulder Management, and the 9th Annual Conference on the New Era in Dentistry were held during the past two months. The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare, in association with Bourn Hall Fertility Center, UK, organized a workshop on essential ultrasound skills for assisted reproduction. Aafiya Premier League (APL) Brokers Cricket Tournament 2017 attracted 16 teams from across the country. All of the matches were played at the Thumbay Grounds, Al Jurf, Ajman. Al Nabooda Insurance Brokers were the tournament champions. We are looking forward to interacting with you more often, and we would like to invite you to be a part of our activities at all levels of the group. Before my next dialogue, We at Thumbay Group wish all our readers ‘RAMADAN KAREEM’.

MARIAM AL SUWAIDI CELEBRATES ISLAMIC ART

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER IN THE LIMELIGHT

Managing

Depression

Hello!

Welcome to yet another exciting edition of HEALTH magazine. In this issue, we laud and celebrate the tremendous strides undertaken by Arab women in this region. They play a key role in the growth and innovation of this great country and have inculcated a superlative model for success in many sectors. I also met with British cooking sensation Ella Mills, otherwise known as Deliciously Ella, to learn her healthy eating tips and advice for well-balanced home cooking. The weather is getting warmer and summer is just about here. But first, many kids will be taking their exams soon and we all know how important reading is for their holistic development. For this, we have an informative feature on why it is so important to inculcate a culture of reading in our homes because as they say; learning always starts in the home. We also have an informative interview with our new Chancellor at Gulf Medical University: Professor Dr. Hossam Hamdy who discusses his innovative plans, exciting

strategies, and his very forward thinking approach to education and research. Also, with bone and joint related disorders at an all-time high, knowing exactly where to go for treatment is paramount. With that, we have an-in-depth feature with the entire team at Thumbay Hospital’s new OrthoSpine Center in Dubai to understand more about how knee and joint replacement surgeries have changed dramatically in the past 20 years. With Ramadan just around the corner, we have several interesting features to highlight the holy month. One is an insightful feature with several non-Muslims in Dubai who explain why they fast and the benefits they reap out of fasting. There is also a feature on the health benefits of Ramadan fasting, in addition to a feature on teaching kids how to fast, and a guide to making up for our sleep deficit that invariably happens in Ramadan. We also have our usual lineup of exciting features and lots more. From the entire team at HEALTH magazine, we wish you a very blessed Ramadan Kareem in advance to you and your families.

Éminence Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32 Gentle enough for the entire family, a little of this divine smelling cream goes a long way. Because this is infused with Shea Butter, Linden flower, and a hint of vanilla, in addition to coenzyme Q10, lactic acid and vitamin E, it is the only natural SPF protection that I know of that truly benefits the skin’s health. The zinc provides the broadband UVA/UVB protection against the harsh rays of the sun and it works very well as a pre-makeup base. Dhs 285; exclusively distributed by Beautylicious in the UAE; 04-220 6024

Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder Yet another great product by Kat Von D, this is a super finely milled no-color powder perfect if you need a powder over your foundation or to “bake” certain areas of your face. It can be used over concealer also and a little goes a long way. Dhs 170; Sephora Dubai Mall

Rimmel’s New Extreme Wear Formula For Mega Volume For too big to be true lashes, try this new innovative formula which gives lashes up to 11 times more volume for a clump-free killer lash look. The unique synergy of waxes and polymers creates an intense, leatherblack volumizing film that rapidly adheres to lashes, building volume more quickly. Dhs 49; Lifestyle, Max, Boots, Carrefour

Éminence Citrus & Kale Potent C + E Serum This is a power packed wonder serum made from several very effective ingredients: Stabilized vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) sourced from grapefruit and lemon for an immediate brightening effect and also contains avocado sourced vitamin E to nourish and plump up the skin, leafy greens (spinach, kale, and broccoli sprouts) to help boost elasticity and improve hydration. The hydrolyzed botanical hyaluronic acid lessens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dhs 450; exclusively distributed by Beautylicious in the UAE; 04-220 6024

Éminence Rosehip & Lemongrass Soothing Hydrator for Face & Body A multi-purpose product I use daily to get a quick boost of hydration to my skin; this feels cool going on because of the blend of camphor and menthol. It also contains Rosehip Tea with vitamin C to revitalize, Aloe to soothe parched skin, lemongrass to reduce the look of enlarged pores, sunflower oil to soothe dry skin and is packed with vitamins A, D and E. It also contains the Natural Repair Complex, sourced from rosehip and rosemary, to protect the skin. Dhs 385; exclusively distributed by Beautylicious in the UAE; 04-220 6024

The Milk BLUR STICK Channeling the no-makeup look, Milk makeup products are a must-have for super busy multi-tasking women. The Blur stick gives you that Instagram filtered look in seconds with a quick swipe all over the face. Wear it alone or use it as a primer. The best part is this is silicone and oil-free so it doesn’t block the pores and helps to minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines. $36 (Dhs 132); www.milkmakeup.com

GRAVITYMUD™ Firming Treatment This is a cutting-edge face mask with mega-targeted ingredients that work in synergy to tighten the skin and give it more definition. It’s formulated without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates and includes a brush for application. Dhs 320; Sephora

A DOSE OF HAPPINESS TO HELP DRIVE BETTER OUTCOMES IN HOSPITALS

IT COULD BE EASILY ASSUMED THAT HAPPINESS AND PLAYTIME IS LOW ON THE LIST OF PRIORITIES OF PATIENTS AND FAMILIES WHEN A CHILD IS IN THE HOSPITAL. OFTEN AN AGONIZING WAIT WITH SOMETIMES UNCERTAIN OUTCOMES, BEING IN THE HOSPITAL IS AN UNHAPPY TIME FOR MOST CHILDREN, AS WELL AS THEIR FAMILIES. However, according to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, research suggests that happiness can actually lead to better health and longevity. Play is proven to have high therapeutic value for ill children and can help with their recovery too. GOSH, who treat over 1,500 patients from the Middle East each year, incorporate happiness into every aspect of treatment and the hospital experience with the hope of improving patient outcomes. Activities can range from play therapy to celebrating important cultural events and even celebrity visits.

“For some patients who are isolated and/or far from home, play can be a real time of normality and solace from hospital life. It is something fun and enjoyable that translates to each patient, no matter what the language or cultural differences may be. Having time for arts and crafts, games, fun and interaction can be really uplifting for a patient’s wellbeing and help children cope with their diagnosis and treatment,” explains Sarah, who works as a Play Specialist at GOSH.

A MultiDisciplinary Approach… Knee and Joint Replacement Surgeries HEALTH MET WITH THE ENTIRE TEAM AT THE RECENT LAUNCH OF THUMBAY HOSPITAL’S NEW ORTHOSPINE CENTER IN DUBAI TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT HOW KNEE AND JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERIES HAVE CHANGED DRAMATICALLY IN THE PAST 20 YEARS.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH Orthopedics has changed in the past 20 years, tells Specialist Orthopedist Dr. Amit Arvindbhai Shah, explaining, “Before, the patient was treated AFTER the problem occurred, while now it is about prevention. As our lifestyles have changed with an increase in obesity rates, and now as orthopedic experts, we need to be able to assess a patient and predict these potential problems in advance before they happen in the future.” Dr.Gopal Shukla, Specialist Neurosurgery, further explains that the spine unit aims to offer a complete range of solutions for spinal ailments starting from simple posture related backaches to instrumentation for complex spinal deformities. The armamentarium includes minimal access procedures like microdiscectomies and endoscopic disc excision.

LIFELONG COMMITMENT

In fact, in orthopedics, they are caring for humans from birth to death, reveals Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Refai Farag Sanad, Pediatric and Deformity Correction Orthopedic Specialist. “This journey in life may include developmental problems or congenital deformities, which require

to be checked; this is the pediatric sector,” he says. “Next, there is adolescence in which sports injuries, trauma, movement, and some rheumatoid disease may begin now.”

ACHES AND PAINS

Nowadays, there is an increasingly

dramatic increase in muscular pain and even newborn babies can be affected; all of which Rheumatology Consultant Dr. Mohammed Hanafy Mohamed Ahmed Salama points out is related to rheumatology. For arthrodesis in the knees and hip, most patients have underlying rheumatic disease

which causes a destruction of the joints in the form of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, fracture of the spine hand and hips, secondary metabolic bone disease (osteoporosis), and many other rheumatic disorders. All of these require preoperative management by a rheumatologist, to control their disease activity, and check their medications which may delay healing as well as medication that may lead to post-operative complications. Also, a rheumatologist has a role after recovery from surgery to control diseases and prevent further joint destruction.

KNEE AND JOINTS REPLACEMENT

The most common reasons for bone degeneration, highlights Specialist Orthopedist Dr. Pulate Avinash Murlidhar, are obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and not consuming a healthy diet. Other than that, there are diseases; some people may have in-built congenital problems, some may have suffered in an accident, or there may be a rheumatological disease.

THE PROCEDURE

Dr. Rajesh Garg, Specialist Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, has successfully performed thousands of joint replacement surgeries on patients ranging from ages 35 to 97. However there is still a spike in patients for knee joint replacements at age 60 to 70 years, typically because of the aging phenomenon- “wear and tear”. He reiterates, “Often times in the past, as a patient got older in age, he/ she assumed the knee pain was due to aging when it was actually knee arthritis, but mistakenly assumed as a symptom of aging.” Also, sometimes a person may have a cartilage injury for which they used painkillers to alleviate the

May/June 2017

19

pain instead of getting it properly treated. This can lead to arthritis further down the line, or it may be genetic, or a post collagen muscular disorder or some other form of arthritis which affects the joints.” Typically Dr. Garg and the team will replace the joint only and only if there is no other means or mode of relieving pain in that knee joint. “So, if a patient has knee arthritis and has tried all other modalities of treatment including pain killers, lifestyle modifications, braces, injections, and joint debridment with knee arthroscopy, yet still the knee pain is disrupting daily activities, then we educate and suggest the patient go for knee replacement surgery,” he states.

RECOVERY

Today, knees joint replacement surgeries are much more improved in the hands of a good surgeon with the best implants and the latest infrastructure, than it was before, points out Dr. Garg. He adds, “Now the post-operative period has almost become pain-free with better analgesic control by the highly professional anesthetist team.”

"For early recovery, we ask the patient to start moving his limbs as soon the patient regains their senses in their lower limbs from effect of the anesthesia, and make them stand within 24 to 48 hours and walk with a help of walker. On an average, the patient stays with us in our hospital for 4 to 5 days and upon discharge, the patient is independent enough to take care of his activities of daily living. A predesigned physiotherapy protocol is followed for each patient from day 1 and on an average, a patient requires 4 to 6 weeks of good effective rehabilitation period for better results.”

TEAM WORK

Performing a joint replacement for a patient is total teamwork, explains Dr. Avinash; from the fitness of the patient to the point of surgery and later physiotherapy requirements. He explains, “Although replacement surgery is a broad perspective, because every knee/ joint replacement is different for every patient, everything is totally individualized to that particular patient because some patients may have deformities, some have the inability to move due to pain, some may have severity due to arthritis, so it’s all according to these factors that a surgery will be done.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSIOTHERAPY

The role that physiotherapy plays in the patient’s prognosis is paramount and Dr. Avinash maintains that it is actually something that is done from start to finish in their department. Further elaborating, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Refai Farag Sanad explains, “After surgery, our patient is shifted for physiotherapy to complete the job. If we stop post-surgery, the patient can actually lose 50 percent of the result.” May/June 2017

Further elaborating, Krishnakali Mondal, Physiotherapy Consultant explains, “Surgery or not, we always have to assess the patient.” For example, if there is a patient who is undergoing joint replacement, before the operation, the physiotherapist needs to carefully and thoroughly assess the muscular strength, joint range of motion, gait, or any other abnormalities of this patient since flexibility and strength is required for

joint replacement. “We need to assess how much strength the muscles have and the success of the surgery will depend upon the condition of the muscles,” she tells, “we also check the posture and the difficulties he/ she may face. Once a knee or joint replacement is done, the physiotherapist immediately begins to check that the muscles adapt with the body and the patient gets back to normal activities gradually” H

For Muslims around the world, fasting in Ramadan is obligatory, except in special circumstances. In addition to the multitude of spiritual benefits acquired, Consultant Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Mohammed Al Hadad explains there are also several key health benefits.

May/June 2017

22

STUDIES

According to Dr. Al Hadad, there are several studies proving that fasting enhances Human Growth Hormone (HGH) secretion, which plays a vital role in igniting the anti-aging process and maintaining youth, integrity of skin, and reduction of wrinkles. “This hormone is also responsible for cell regeneration including that of the brain and various vital organs for both men and women,” he explains.

RAMADAN FASTING IS SUPERIOR

With intermittent fasting, the body gets confused about when food is going to be consumed, and what type of food will be available, Dr. Al Hadad explains, “For example, people who skip their breakfast and lunch don’t lose weight because their metabolic rate drops.” Our body burns calories when we have well-portioned meals and consume nutrients at appropriate times. He adds in Ramadan, the body goes on starvation

mode during the first two days of fasting, but will eventually adapt to consume food at certain hours, as long as the amount of food is controlled.

SUHOUR

Suhour, tells Dr. Al Hadad, is just like breakfast. “Try to avoid salty foods as they will make you feel thirsty during the day; I would recommend cheese, Laban, milk, or anything that is usually consumed during breakfast in the Arab world,” he explains. “The quantities should not be larger than the usual breakfast.”

IFTAR

First and most importantly, Dr. Al Hadad advises to slow down and avoid eating too fast at Iftar. He elaborates, “In order to prepare the stomach for the meal, eat a few dates – which are complex sugars that are easy on the stomach – with a glass of water. Give it a rest for 10 to 15 minutes, and then start your meal, preferably in moderate quantity. It is preferable to start with the protein and then finish with vegetables and fruits. The ideal meal should take between 20 to 30 minutes.”

The reason behind breaking it down this way is because after 12 hours of rest, the stomach was at rest for around 12 hours and needs to prepare to receive food.

TIPS FOR FASTING IN RAMADAN

1 Stay hydrated by drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water each day as most headaches in Ramadan are caused by dehydration. 2 Consume a healthy diet in order to lose weight this Ramadan. 3 Limit consumption of sweet and fried foods that can be hard to digest. 4 Schedule exercises two to three hours after your main meal. 5 Use the fact that you are fasting all day to quit smoking. SLEEP TIPS FOR RAMADAN To avoid sleep deprivation in Ramadan, Sleep Physician Dr. Irshaad Ebrahim provides helpful advice to ensure control over sleep deprivation.

Avoid heavy, sugary and rich foods at Iftar Loading your plate with calories will significantly disrupt the quality of your sleep–a heavy meal means that the body will be trying to digest whilst it needs to be sleeping and resting. Try and stick to a healthy balance of protein, fruit and vegetables, avoiding processed sugar and carbohydrates (pasta, white bread, biscuits, cake) as much as possible – or have in small amounts.

Get the same amount of sleep Try to ensure that you get the same amount of sleep over the 24 hour period. Usually most people would sleep during the night for 7 to 8 hours in one block, but during Ramadan this is not possible, however, try and ensure that you make up for the lost night time sleep. Take time to make a plan which you stick to as best as possible during the holy month; this may involve going to bed earlier than normal. For example, try to go to bed by 11pm and have 4 hours following Iftar, wake up at 3.30am ready for Suhour and Fajr and return back to sleep at around 5am for 2 hours. If you are working reduced hours then this sleep can be a little longer. If not, then a nap after work before Iftar can make up for the last 1 to 2 hours of lost sleep. This new routine may mean sacrificing or reducing time spent socializing or on leisure activities, but your body will thank you for a new routine ensuring enough sleep.

May/June 2017

24

Power Naps If your energy levels are low during the working day, a power nap can be helpful. Find a quiet place away from the work station such as your car, and take a 20 minute nap. Set an alarm to ensure you do not oversleep. Try not to sleep for longer than 20 minutes during this daytime nap as your body will go into deep sleep and you will wake from this feeling tired and groggy.

ONE ON ONE WITH

PROFESSOR HOSSAM HAMDY

HEALTH had the opportunity to speak with Gulf Medical University’s (GMU) new Chancellor, Professor Hossam Hamdy about his innovative plans, exciting strategies, and his very forward thinking approach to Education and Research.

May/June 2017

26

Key Strategies “We are moving into an era where the current common present situation is in which the academic environment is separate from healthcare service and from research. These cannot and should not exist as separate entities. Now, what has begun over the past few years is that systems have to develop where these 3 should be working together with a great deal of shared goals and strategies aligned to the operational business and the support each one brings to the other entity.”

With the vision of Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, we have started at Gulf Medical University, the first steps in developing a new system in the ‘GMU’s Academic Health System’. I use the word ‘system’ because it is a system, not only a center. It is a system that has all of the elements to be in continuous communication in order to have an effective and efficient running of all its operations.

A Challenge “This is definitely not an easy thing. It’s a challenge because it takes a lot of organizational and cultural change from what people have been used to, but it’s the only way we have to move forward. And all of this has been developed by the Founder President Mr. Thumbay Moideen as evidenced with the already existing extensive network of hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic labs alongside the University with its Colleges, Institutes and Research Centers."

GMU –Innovation & Research "The most recent initiative is the development of the ‘Thumbay Institute of Precision Medicine and Translational Research’; so we are moving and we are moving fast. Mr. Thumbay Moideen and all of us are talking about innovation. In the UAE, this is going to be the first system to be developed in the private sector. I am aware of something similar in Qatar with The Hamad Medical

Corporation (HMC) and also the King Saud Ben Abdul Aziz University in Riyadh. But again, it’s a government initiative. I think we are going beyond the private institutions with the universities and hospitals to something very unique in how it’s put together. This, then is the future of GMU as an Academic Health System.”

GMU Contributing to the Future of Healthcare in UAE “Technology is moving very fast and we cannot predict what’s exactly going to happen with this technology. But the question really is how technology will affect the health of the population? We are growing in several directions: one is the new term ‘Precision Medicine’ which used to be called personalized medicine. In simple words, Precision Medicine is the application of advances in genetic sciences to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It’s all in the genes. If we are talking about hypertension or cancer, it’s in our genes. Therefore, in order for the treatment and drugs to be effective, we should

understand the genetic profile of the person and of the disease. This is one very important direction in which we are going. We decided to go towards translational research. We have linked Thumbay Diagnostic Labs with research to develop the Institute of Precision Medicine which has a strong translation to practice from the bench to the bed."

Population Health Improvement and Sustainable Development “The second Institute coming up within our umbrella is the Thumbay Institute of Population Health and Policy. The Institute will focus on research and postgraduate studies in Population Health, Prevention, Health Professional Development Improvement, Environment, Health Economics, and Health Policy. There is a gap all across the world in the amount of money being spent on developing the health work force--not only doctors, but we are also talking about nurses, physiotherapists and all other technical support; everyone directly or indirectly related to health. This is why at GMU; we have developed the third institute ‘Thumbay Institute for Health Workforce Development and Leadership’.”

private sector, public organizations, philanthropists, and so on.” “The discovery of one drug can easily reach billions. It sometimes takes 10 years before it is out in the market. Therefore, countries have to support investment in research. Having said that, it is important to inculcate a research culture very early in schools and universities at all levels of learning.”

Education: What is Your View About the Future of Higher Education? “I have spent 40 years of my life in Medical Education. And I have kept two parallel tracks; one is ‘surgery’ as I am a pediatric surgeon and the second is ‘education’. My beliefs about education is that learners should be given the opportunity to experiment and learn from life’s experiences. I believe in the social theories of learning where the learner is embedded within a group of professionals in their daily

practice at the workplace. They will learn the language and professional behavior of the group.” “I also believe in problembased learning. In fact, one of the definitions of learning is NOT only to acquire information and skills, but to change the behavior of the learner. This is what we are doing here at Gulf Medical University.” H

New Innovation in Medical Education “In education, we have developed an innovative educational platform -‘Virtual Patient Learning.’ Taking a patient’s story and turning it into a script and shoot it as an interactive film. We use actors as simulated patients. This is a very strong learning tool which can be used with medical students and other health professionals. It is extremely authentic. Artificial intelligence in the software create this interactivity between the learner and the virtual patient.”

The Role of Research “I think research is essential for improving healthcare. Research has to be of benefit and also it should translate to patient care. The finance of research is problematic. It should be through different institutions, government,

posture while we are giving our attention to those gadgets so the best tip is to limit the time of the continuous using. For example, instead of 30 minutes in one go, read something and then leave it for a while, stretch and move around before coming back to it. Do not spend more than 20 minutes continuously reading or doing school work on the tablet.

While sitting in school, the hip, knees, and ankle joint need to be in the 90 degrees position, bottom comfortably tucked at the back of the chair, back rested on the backrest, arms comfortable on the desk in front or on the armrests so that shoulders are in the neutral position: This will automatically bring the head and neck into a neutral and comfortable position. Sitting in this position will help the muscles, eliminate discomfort, and kids will also be able to give more attention to the lecture.

Change positions often: When you feel stiff, get up and stretch, instead of moving in the chair from one side to the other.

and engage together with their kids in a physical activity they all enjoy. It makes it more interesting and likely to be practiced regularly.

5.

If your child cannot avoid carrying heavy school items every day than the weight needs to be symmetrically balanced on the body: Now we have school bags designed as a trolley, however, kids need to be careful to avoid pulling the trolley with the same hand.

If you feel discomfort and/or pain for longer than a few days, visit a doctor or physiotherapist. H

Women’s Empowerment

“Women have managed to accomplish a lot in the last few years; we have progressed to influential positions and are leading in all the major fields. And we can acknowledge the UAE government and society that are working hard to push women to achieve and accomplish more.”

Work-life Balance

“I do not believe in a work-life balance, as it is impossible to balance work when you’re needed at home and balance home when you’re at work. To best manage this, I would suggest giving your best at work, and spending quality time with your friends and family when you are outside of work.”

Women’s Empowerment

“There has been significant progress that promises a very bright future for Arab woman. Apart from this generation’s shift in the mindset of the Arab woman’s role at home and the workforce, I have noticed a considerable increase of women in leadership roles.”

Work-life Balance

“During work hours, I am one hundred percent focused on KAGE, how to keep moving forward and growing the business. Life comes into play outside of the office, being with friends, family, traveling, and finding inspiration in the little things.”

Sarah Al-Ramadhan handles the financial side of her family business Apotheca, a distinct beautydistribution company which focuses on brands that specialize in a particular category.

Women’s Empowerment

“I can speak for Kuwait particularly, which I find to be very progressive with regards to women’s rights and business empowerment. Many entrepreneurs in Kuwait are women, and it doesn’t seem to be a particular issue within my generation or the industry we work in.”

Work-life Balance

“It varies – during launch periods, it’s obviously more stressful and likely a week filled more with ‘work’ than ‘life. But regularly, it’s important to be realistic about what can be achieved during a certain period of time, as well as making time in your day for both work and life. Without making time for family, often work hours become tiresome and less productive.”

Nora Al Ramadhan is the Co-Founder and General Manager of Apotheca Beauty who focuses on the company’s organic growth into new retail outlets.

Women’s Empowerment

“We have found the landscape for female entrepreneurs in the region, particularly as locals in the GCC, to be supportive, available, and accepting. Where we believe there is more progress to be made is in relation to ageism – so young female entrepreneurs coming into the industry are in their 20s or early 30s, and working with people who have been in the industry for many years, and are much older in age with the same skill set. It has been more of a challenge to gain credibility, and deal with certain professionals because of this, despite education level and expertise. However, our youthfulness has actually played out to be one of our advantages, and led us to where we are today. We are young driven women with our finger always on the pulse of many things that are trending.”

Work-life Balance

“It has always a challenge to balance work with family obligations, but the way I go about it is setting clear priorities. I have clear schedules and plans for every day – along with the due dates for each task. I always aim for 80 percent of the tasks to get complete that day and accept that daily life comes into play that takes you off track from time to time and I am okay with that.”

Omaira Farooq Al Olama runs a company that is solely catered towards the development of Emiratis, the employment of Emiratis in jobs that suit them, and the advancement of their existing careers positions to achieve the career growth that they are aiming for.

Women’s Empowerment

“I have seen tremendous advancement, especially in areas such as education and civil services. What is so fascinating is that women approach me now more than ever, whereas before it would be more behind the scenes. Nowadays, I get messages all the time of their achievements and how they have fulfilled their dreams.”

Work-Life Balance

“I make sure that I am always around for my students, however I let them know that certain timings are for my children and family. When you love what you do, and you see so many young nationals succeeding in various fields, you feel so proud that you find ways of trying to fit everything in. STEPS TO HELP MYSELF

Although mental health issues are commonly identified as a “psychological problem”, the brain is a physical organ in the human body. It is therefore, just as important to seek help and support by firstly acknowledging and accepting that you are struggling and need some help, just like if you had broken

your leg. Although there may be stigma with mental health issues, it is important to know this can change if we speak about the issues more and recognize that there are a lot of people and healthcare professionals who want to and can help. • Speak to your general practitioner (GP): They are your

first port of call if you think you are struggling with depression. • Medication: At first you may consider this to be daunting, especially because of the many side effects some medications have. However, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages and this has been proven in many research publications. • Consider seeking support through

counseling/psychotherapy: A trained professional who is neutral may be the support you need to feel less pressure. In time, counseling can help you to develop a better understanding of yourself and techniques to manage situations better. • Undertake some form of activity: Whether this is going for a short walk, listening to your favorite

music, or contacting a friend. • Doing something that brings pleasure: This may also help you to feel you are doing something that gives a small sense of achievement. With depression, this is very important to recognize. H (Written by: Mandeep Jassal, Cognitive and Behavioral Therapist, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Practitioner) May/June 2017

The Nanny Chronicles

Recently, there has been a lot of negative news in the media about nannies in the region; both in the mistreatment of the children they are entrusted to care for and the mistreatment of the nannies themselves. HEALTH speaks to Dr. Tara Wyne, Clinical Psychologist who delves deeper into this issue... Growing Dependence

Dr. Wyne points out that clearly there has been a population explosion, with more expats and therefore, a steep rise in use of nannies as childcare solutions for working families. “The missing element in the equation is the lack of appropriate screening and police and reference checks from the home countries of the nannies,” she explains and we are employing typically uneducated and untrained personnel into our homes to do very

May/June 2017

38

skilled jobs—as a caregiver to our children. However, she warns that without provision of adequate skills, even the best natured people may run into stress and encounter forces that leave them a risk to the children in their care.

What a Child Needs

What any infant or child needs is a safe, warm responsive primary caregiver, reinforces Dr. Wyne. “There is no necessity that this primary caregiver is a biological relative,” she says; however, what

is necessary is that the caregiver is consistent and does a good enough job at meeting the child's needs. Whether it be a parent or a nanny, the role, she continues, is similar: noticing the child, acknowledging the child's experiences, empathizing with children’s pain and sharing their joy. “Helping them with navigating a world which is stressful and complicated for children and helping our children regulate their emotions in response to the world around them,” she tells.

Mistreatment Red Flags Hopefully you are aware of your child's normal patterns of behavior and demeanor. Dr. Wyne advises that what we should look out for is if there are any changes or alterations in our children's behavior or way of being. Some of these red flags include: Changes in behavior: aggression, anger, hostility or hyperactivity — or changes in school performance. Emotional swings that are inappropriate or out of context to the situation. Indifference or delayed or inappropriate emotional development. Loss of previously acquired developmental skills. Depression, anxiety or unusual fears or a sudden loss of self-confidence or rebellious behavior. A decrease in school performance, loss of interest in school, or withdrawal from friends or usual activities.

There are many reasons for nannies abusing kids, reveals Dr. Wyne. “The most obvious reason being that nannies are overworked, often treated inhumanely,” she says as increasingly they are used for both household chores and childcare and have to juggle it all. They are often sleep deprived and working intensely long hours. Also, she adds that these nannies can be very isolated in our homes, barely speaking the same language, or not being engaged in any conversation, they may feel very isolated and lonely. They can feel unsupported as their wellbeing is not a subject of interest, they are simply support staff and it isn't relevant to monitor their wellbeing. These very common factors can lead to nannies being incredibly stressed and often depressed, they build up tremendous tension which, Dr. Wyne says will inevitably result in implosion or explosion. “This may be directed at children as they are present and often challenging and can trigger a loss of control,” she tells. “If there are also working hours, monetary and day off disputes, it can lead to a very dangerous situation where the nannies feel powerless, angry, entitled and maybe even vengeful.”

Proactive Steps a Parent Can Take

Dr. Wyne advises parents provide the nanny with a document where what is okay and not okay in your home is detailed. “We cannot expect them to just know, we must coach and teach,” she says. “Having a weekly catch up with the nanny is

also very important, to review how things have been in the home and to troubleshoot any emerging issues.”

Nanny Hiring Criteria

• A nanny should come with good references; you should be able to speak with at least one previous employer and ensure they have a good record of behavior and performance in a previous job. • Openly ask if they have suffered from any major mental health issues, or have had any big stresses or traumas occur recently to be aware of what pressures they may bring with them. • All prospective employers/ sponsors of nannies should conduct a trial with the candidate and have them in your home for at least a few days. Ideally, you should be there at all times to be able to monitor and scrutinize the nanny's interactions and energy within your home. • The things we detect in person, in real life versus the interview, are critical to knowing if this person is

suitable to be a caregiver. • It is useful to hire nannies with direct childcare experience for the age group of your children • Your nanny should preferably have some kind of basic life support training and knowledge of what to do in basic crisis situations involving your children. • The nanny should be able to strike a rapport with your children easily; they should have warmth and curiosity for the children and not be too functional and transactional. • The nanny should be eager and open to know the values of your home and the manner in which you wish your child to be raised. If they can take instruction and easily and flexibly adapt to your way of raising your children, it is likely to be a good fit. • The nanny should recognize that their first priority is childcare and caregiving and that they can't take shortcuts with children. From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

UNEVEN EYEBROWS

Question: My eyebrows are uneven as one is higher up than the other. Can Botox help me? Dr. Shadan Naji, Specialist Aesthetic Dermatologist answers: “This is a very important question and the answer is yes, it can. Neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin can be used to lift up the tail of the eyebrows especially in women to give them more younger and attractive look. Even if there is a difference, we can adjust that by changing the position of both eyebrows in order to be symmetrical.”

FIBROIDS IN THE UTERUS

CHILD WITH DIABETES

Dr. Sejal Devendra Surti, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology answers: “Fibroids treatment depends on several factors including: symptoms, location, fibroid size, age, and plans for future pregnancies. Medications will help treat mild symptoms like heavy bleeding and pain. Surgery is an option if the symptoms are moderate/ severe. There are different laparoscopic/ open surgical methods like myomectomy- removal of fibroid alone and hysterectomy - removal of the fibroid and uterus when the fibroids are large. There are also minimally invasive treatment procedures like Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) where small particles/ substances are injected via a catheter into the artery to block the blood supply to the fibroid, causing them to shrink. MRI guided focused ultrasound uses focused ultrasound ablation that occurs inside the MRI scanner with an ultrasound transducer.”

Dr. Palat Krishna Menon, Director of Thumbay Labs answers: “Diabetes is a group of diseases in which the patient has high blood glucose levels. In this case, the child should undergo the following tests: a) Fasting and post prandial blood sugar: this is a preliminary test, the first sample collected fasting, followed by a normal meal and repeat a blood sugar test two hours after the start of the normal meal. b) The next test is for HbA1c: to determine the percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood. This gives a synopsis of glucose levels over the last 3 months. c) HLA testing for DR3/DR4: to look if the child is carrying the genes rendering him prone to Type I diabetes. d) Finally an assay for Islet cell antibodies. Results from these tests should be collated to give an indication if the child is a Type I diabetic as well as help understand the underlying factors responsible for the disease.”

Question: I have been diagnosed with fibroids in the uterus. What is the most current and effective way to treat this problem?

Question: What kind of blood tests/diagnostic tests determine if a child under age 11 is a diabetic?

How Much is Too Much?

May/June 2017

Social media, especially Instagram, has triggered a demand in more people wanting to have cheekbones like Kim Kardashian or lips like Angelina Jolie. To understand, HEALTH meets with Dermatologist Dr. Muhsen Kalaji about when to draw the line.

Responsibility

Is there really such a thing as too much Botox, fillers, and peels? According to Dr. Kalaji, all of these can be overdone, elaborating, “I believe there is too much; for Botox, it’s the frozen face, when we trace all the wrinkles, instead of targeting the expression muscles. For fillers, it’s blowing the face up with too much volume, instead of supporting certain structures.” The doctor, he adds, should be the maestro who guides according to his experience and area of expertise by good communication with the patient.

Social Media

Social media, reiterates Dr. Kalaji, especially Instagram, has a great influence on women, driving them to try looking a different way.

“Many women are visiting our clinic to correct a line that is almost invisible - after they have seen it in a selfie,” explains Dr. Kalaji. “In fact, social media is taking the concept of being presentable to being an ideal to a higher level with more women still hoping to look like Angelina Jolie.”

Expert Advice

It’s important that the doctor tells his/her patient when to start aesthetic procedures, tells Dr. Kalaji, but the onus is on the doctor about when to stop. “Beauty is different from one culture to another, sometime it’s about a healthy look or a younger look, being attractive, and less tired,” he says, concluding, “We all know that beauty comes from within, so every woman should feel it otherwise she’ll spend her lifetime chasing it….” H

Red Flags of Overdoing It • A big sign is the patient demanding more and more and being obsessed about fighting every single wrinkle or freckle. • Trying hard to look like a celebrity. • Saying “I want to get this done” when the right question to ask is “do I need it?”

EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT COLOR CORRECTING

May/June 2017

46

All beauty aficionados are well aware that color correcting is a huge trend that has taken the beauty world by storm. HEALTH meets with Gilbert Soliz, Global Makeup Artist for Marc Jacobs Beauty to find out exactly how it’s done. WHAT IT MEANS According to Soliz, color correcting basically means neutralizing the skin using the power of color theory. He explains, “Color corrector can essentially be used by anyone who wishes to correct, even out, or perfect a range of cosmetic concerns from redness and discoloration to dullness. I love the versatility of use and color range from Marc Jacobs Beauty covert sticks – the shade range includes peach/orange for hyperpigmentation/discoloration, lime/citron for redness, and lilac/ lavender to combat dullness and brighten.”

TYPICAL SKIN PROBLEMS AND HOW TO CORRECT THEM

Dark pigmentation around the upper lip area: Soliz suggests peach or orange. These tones of orange help disguise or lighten the look of deep pigmented areas. This works great especially on medium to deeper skin tones. DARK UNDER EYE CIRCLES: Any form of orange. The lighter the skin is, the lighter the variation of orange should be. Peach, salmon, and orange are usually great tones from which to start, tells Soliz.

Redness/mild rosacea on the cheeks: Green, suggests Soliz, is very straightforward and very effective. UNEVEN SKIN TONE OVERALL: Soliz says this really depends on the exact concern. To cover pimple marks or discoloration, he usually chooses green to help with the redness and peachy shades to help with darkness. For those with yellow undertones, lilac/ lavender can brighten the complexion nicely. H

PERFECT SKIN TIPS

THE KEY

Prepping the skin is key and for this, Soliz explains, “A color corrector is applied before foundation/ concealer and should be applied in thin sheer layers with the finger tips or a complexion brush. ”

Remember, truly flawless skin is usually a sign of someone who has taken additional steps to even and perfect the skin, points out Soliz. HERE ARE FEW MORE TIPS: • Less is more. • Start with sheer layers and gradually build. • Use a synthetic brush to apply. • Set with powder.

Beauty Review:

Using Hair Color to Contour… BBLUNT SALON TUCKED AWAY IN DIFC IS INDIA’S MOST WELL-KNOWN NAME IN HAIR; BBLUNT SALON, WHOSE KEY ETHOS--“ALL ABOUT QUALITY”—IS EVIDENT IN THE SERVICES THEY OFFER TO ENSURE THE CLIENT GETS EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT.

mixed with Olaplex all around my jaw line, face, and the crown. 45 minutes later, this was shampooed out, toner was applied over the sink to blend the color, and an intense Olaplex treatment was left on for about 15 minutes. Afterwards my hair was blow dried and styled.

RESULTS: I looked very

different though my length stayed the same, which was exactly what I wanted. The baby lights around my face lightened my face up considerably and because of the Olaplex, my hair actually looked healthier, despite just having had a color. BBLUNT is THE place to go if you are fastidious about quality and want an on-trend change to your look. H MICHELLE’S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 4 MUST-HAVE HAIR HOMECARE PRODUCTS • A very good shampoo as it will open up the hair cuticles. • A very good conditioner to close the cuticles. • A good quality leave-in conditioner. • A good quality hair serum.

Contact: BBLUNT is located at Liberty House, DIFC; 04-352 6300

Client consultation is key at BBLUNT and for this, Head Stylist Michelle spent more than 20 minutes examining my hair, discussing my lifestyle, and previous hair history. The bottom line: my hair was damaged at the ends and demonstrated this by doing not one, but two strand tests, one with pre-lightener and one with color which resulted in the pre-lightened one withering away. She did a scarf test to check if I

was warm toned or cool toned using a silver and then gold scarf next to my face; the silver scarf proved I was cool. So we opted to go for an ash tone color in the form of baby lights just around my face to create a contouring effect, which is very on-trend. But first a good haircut was needed to refresh my hair overall. She cleverly cut my hair, just enough to give shape and volume. For the baby lights, Michelle deftly placed foils of ash color May/June 2017

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER IN THE LIMELIGHT A glamorous PR coordinator in Dubai, Layal Ghosn initiated www.LayalGhosn. com as a personal portfolio to share her work in PR and fashion. Passionate about fashion, she details what makes it all come together.

May/June 2017

52

PERSONAL FAVORITES THE START “I was raised in L.A, then moved to Lebanon, and now live in Dubai and have worked with some of the most amazing fashion houses, but there's nothing that excites me more than the challenge of putting an outfit together on a budget, so I decided to share the crazy deals and tips I have so that everyone else can get on the bargain train with me.”

“I have a number of favorites: Martha Graeff: Her energy overflows thousands of miles away. Her personality, style, and beauty are just an overload. She mixes up her ultra-feminine style with classic staples, with a quirky twist. Parvané Barret: This 17-year-old is my spirit animal. She is so effortlessly cool and pulls off the 70’s grudge fashion so perfectly. Rita Dahdah Fawaz: Rita is such an authentic person from her personality to her style. I am absolutely in love with her minimalistic tendencies. And Leandra Medine: She has been the person I have been following the longest and whose humor and fashion sense are just something else.

ADVICE “More fashion blogs are created daily than a bakery that bakes bread. It’s such a competitive world out there so you have to maintain your identity and stay original. For example, there are only so many ways to shoot a certain photo, but if you have a personality and you showcase it, that’s what makes you different. Just be who you are and it should pay off on its own.” H

SOCIAL MEDIA FORAY “I have had my Instagram since it first launched back in 2012 and it was the first social media platform I became overly obsessed with. I was always in love with the fashion world and the people behind it, which led me to my PR career. I would have to say I get my inspiration from my career itself. Dubai

is slowly becoming a fashion capital and you can always spot someone with a ‘an out of the box style,’ whether it’s a public figure or not, so I created a space to share my darkest fashion secrets and speak about being the 20 something-yearold girl living in this amazing city.” May/June 2017

CHILDREN FASTING IN RAMADAN When a child starts fasting in Ramadan, often times the parents feel more anxious than the child. To help make it easier, Sarah Kanaan, Child Nutrition expert at Nestlé Middle East reveals some practical tips to make the most of your children’s fasting.

May/June 2017

56

5 Kids Require Suhour While Suhour is important for adults, Kanaan stresses that it is even more crucial for kids who are fasting as it affects their physical performance and mental alertness during their active day. Kids who don’t eat Suhour may become tired at school and lose concentration in class. Skipping Suhour also prohibits them from getting all their nutritional needs and most of their essential nutrients for their growing bodies such as iron and calcium.

Foods for Suhour According to Kanaan, it is important to choose the right variety of food for your children during Suhour including complex carbohydrates, fiber, and lean protein. “Complex carbohydrates, which are slowly absorbed carbohydrates, help release energy slowly during the long hours of fasting and are found in fiber rich foods such as wholegrain breads and breakfast

cereals,” she explains. “Therefore, it is highly recommended to have at least half of your grains intake from whole grain foods.”

Iftar The healthy plate, reminds Kanaan, should also be maintained in during Iftar by including grains, vegetables, fruits, and protein. “The key is to be self-disciplined by controlling our portion sizes while making sure that we opt mostly for healthier options and indulge in moderation,” she suggests. “Start your Iftar meal with two dates, then a glass of laban to replenish your body reserves of fluids and electrolytes. Then have a warm bowl of soup, salad, and main course-- all in moderation to avoid discomfort for the rest of the evening.” Also, remember to include dates, dried fruits, and nuts as part of your daily diet during Ramadan. These provide healthy nutrients and are packed with energy, thus helping you keep your vitality during this month. H

Suhour Tips for Your Kids

• Even though the thought of sleep may be far more appealing than waking up, make sure your child doesn’t skip Suhour. Prepare Suhour with your kids before they sleep so it’s ready when they wake up • For a wholesome and nutritious Suhour prepared in minutes, whole grain cereal with milk and fruit is one good choice. You can add unsalted almonds and nuts to the bowl for additional protein. • Give your kids a well-balanced Suhour meal that includes complex carbohydrates, fiber and lean proteins to keep them going throughout the day. And remember, water is key to healthy hydration. • Always read the label. Make sure that your child is consuming cereal that clearly states they are made with whole grains. • Refrain from choosing salty or sweet food to avoid feeling thirsty or hungry the next day.

MARIAM AL SUWAIDI CELEBRATES ISLAMIC ART

The UAE has left no stone unturned when it comes to its unheralded development and success and this definitely includes art. HEALTH talks with Mariam Al Suwaidi- Founder of Gadeemadis and Curator of the Islamic Art Forum, about UAE’s burgeoning art industry and particularly, Islamic Art.

May/June 2017

58

Gadeemadis Gadeemadis as an established artistic entity had started as an idea officially in March 2015 and was founded later in that same year with a large focus on supporting Abu Dhabi by taking part in escalating the country to the next level so as to reach international standards. Mariam elaborates, “The Islamic Art Forum is the main project of Gadeemadis. The forum’s aim is very clear and it is to promote the genuine concept of Islamic art as a civilized, intellectual, and aesthetical heritage on a very high level. I visualize the future of the Forum as an established annual event in the UAE. Later on, we will strive to work in collaboration with other major cities and coordinate with the youth at different educational establishments abroad. This will definitely introduce and set up a unique interest in Islamic Art for many students in the UAE and abroad.”

Growing Awareness and Appreciation “It will take me forever to describe the progress and transition in the art scene here. Art has always been a part of our legacy in the UAE since the times of our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In recent times, the appreciation for a variety of art forms has increased in the region; we can see it through the numerous art events and gallery openings here. Art is not a hobby; it is a way of life. In the words of the late Founding Father, ‘Ancestors have left us a lot of grand heritage that we are entitled to be proud of and to preserve and develop so it remains an asset to our nation and the nation’s future generations.’”

The Importance of Art “Art has the power to change lives and our society. That is why I would like to inspire women and children through the Islamic Art Forum. One clear example was the recently held art exhibition in collaboration with WOW Middle East, where proceeds from the event went to Al Jalila Foundation, a well-known philanthropic organization. The exhibition entitled, ‘Untha from Alef to Yaa’ gave a powerful message to women of the world through the beautiful Arabic letters from A to Z. Our country UAE has a rich culture and heritage,

which we are proud of and through the Islamic Art Forum, my vision is to share it with the rest of the world and at the same time instill in the hearts of our younger generations the values of Arab culture.”

Islamic Calligraphy “To begin with, calligraphy in itself is the most highly regarded and most central of Islamic Art. A calligrapher usually exploits possibilities of Arabic script to create inherent writings; particularly from the Quran, as ornament. The revival however, lies in the adaptation contemporary artists are following when performing their artwork, being open to other artistic theories and schools. We live in an open world after all and since Islamic Arts are civilized and intellectual, their aesthetical heritage is definitely renewable, and this is very crucial for us to sustain. Therefore, preserving Islamic Calligraphy as a treasured facet of art is very significant since our art is a mere visual manifestation of who we are and what we believe in, and we need to have a say in this world.”

Personal Favorite “I would say the Tunisian artist Mr. Naja Al Mahdawi, whom I believe is a real legend. His brilliant Arabic Calligraphy artwork is now exhibited all around the world and personally I hold special feelings and utmost of respect towards his work and unique personality as well…” H May/June 2017

FASTING IN RAMADAN… A NON-MUSLIMS PERSPECTIVE FOR MUSLIMS, FASTING IN RAMADAN IS MANDATORY WITH CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS. HOWEVER, IT’S NOT ONLY MUSLIMS WHO ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF RAMADAN; HEALTH MEETS NON-MUSLIMS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE WHO ARE ALSO FASTING AND EXPLAIN THEIR REASONS FOR DOING SO…

For TINA MATEEN, a press officer in Dubai, Ramadan signifies peace and sacrifice. She explains, “It is a month not only for cleansing your body, but your heart and soul. Fasting is a test for the mind. It is an experience in itself as you learn the most important component of life: Patience/Sabr.” But more than giving up food and water, Tina thinks what is essential to refrain from is gossiping, hurting, or disrespecting people. “Of course, fasting is never easy, it is a change for the system, but I guess practice makes a man perfect,” she tells.

As her father is a Muslim, Tina points out that one of the main reasons she fasts is her father. “Other than the simple fact of mutual respect for both the religions: Christianity and Islam in my house. In Christianity, we have Lent too, the period before Easter, which is for abstinence and fasting,” she explains, “for me the end result is the most important, I feel more patient, in better control of my emotions, and a unique connection with the Almighty. My father always said that Ramadan fasting is a gateway to peace and a clear conscience.”

The holy month of Ramadan for KALYAN CHAKRAVARTHY, Film Maker and Creative Director / Producer at KC24 (a film production company), represents a cleansing of the mind, body, and soul. When he first heard about Ramadan, apart from the religious significance in the Quran, Kalyan recalls there were so many other aspects that appealed to him like the discipline, the sacrifice, sharing, the submission, control over temptations, and the whole point of the fast is to demonstrate submission to God and keep the mind focused on a spiritual plane. Kalyan fasts exactly like the Muslims do. He narrates, “I start my fast from sunrise until sunset without food and water. I break my fast with fruits, dates, water,

The month of Ramadan for DR. MARIA ALEXANDRA AREVALO GABRIELE, General and Cosmetic Dentist at Vilafortuny Laser Centre, is a time of inner reflection, devotion to God, selfpurification, and charity work; essentially, a boost to one’s spiritual life. She affirms that fasting is one of the ways to build a closer relationship with God by believing and keeping yourself pure in the heart and mind. and juice. As Ramadan moved into summers, it gets a little challenging, but then it’s always the initial three to four days.” Kalyan feels that once we are used to it, it’s the mindset and determination that faith will help you cross over the challenges.

Dr. Maria explains the objective of fasting is to develop submission to God, removing one’s worries, problems, and bad habits until one can reach peace within one’s self. “This sacrifice

will be worth it as it helps the mind to focus on the real important things in life,” she says. “I am a non-Muslim, but I share the belief in the principles of fasting and being able to control one’s self. I practice thorough calmness, focus in being merciful, and show empathy for people.” While she maintains she is completely inexperienced, she fully encourages people to embrace the holy month of Ramadan, and feel the love and peace that it brings. She adds, “I believe that all of us who join in prayers together will enjoy peace and harmony and that is great for the nation.”

When Kalyan tried it the first time, he says he felt a sense of calm in life. “It slows you down and makes you realize a lot of things compared to the rat race that we live; there is a sense of giving and goodness around you and it feels good,” he tells, and also it is the best detox session physically and mentally. “People often get surprised why I fast being a Hindu; but I have been bought up with the values to respect all religions and to understand that the spiritual essence is the same, though we take different paths,” he explains.

UNDERSTANDING

BABIES HEALTH meets with Cecile de Scally, the lead midwife, pregnancy and postnatal educator at Malaak Mama & Baby Care, a one-stop shop for all pre and postnatal support services for Mother and Child, who details her unique skill at communicating with babies.

May/June 2017

64

Cecile has been a nurse for nearly 30 years, of which 26 years she has been a midwife. She explains, “My role is the lead midwife, pregnancy and postnatal educator at Malaak Mama & Baby Care which provide a wide range of support to pregnant women and new parents ranging from prenatal classes, hypno-birthing workshops all the way to post-natal sleep support, sleep training and breastfeeding consultations with a dedicated team of Midwives, Health educators, DHA licensed nurses

and babysitters to support families in the UAE. Our goal at Malaak is to support families through their wonderful parenting journey and build their confidence as parents.”

MIDWIVES IN DUBAI Most times a doctor is the person who looks after the mother through pregnancy and the actual birth, tells Cecile. “I am privileged as my relationship is an ongoing one where I support during pregnancy, once the baby is here, and throughout the postnatal period supporting with feeding, sleep, and early child development.”

A BABY WHISPERER Cecile has been called a “baby whisperer” as she tries to talk to babies, connect with them and understand them as well as assist parents in learning and understanding their babies’ needs. “I teach parents to read their baby’s cues which help ensure a smooth transition into parenthood. I am lucky to have been able to interact with so many babies and parents over my 30 years as a midwife so my experience has really helped me easily connect to babies and young children.” H

THE IMPORTANCE OF BABY MASSAGE According to Cecile, their maternity nurses do recommend the use of Bio-Oil for both mother and baby. “I do advocate baby massage in general to help connect with your babies and soothe them and there is truly nothing better than establishing that connection,” she tells, “personally, I love the use of either Bio-Oil or coconut oil due to the natural ingredients found in both, nevertheless this is a personal, not professional opinion.”

WHY OUR KIDS NEED TO BE DOING PILATES MORE THAN EVER

With our children’s ever increasing dependency on electronic gadgets, a solution is required to get them up and moving. Meet Malicah Eissa, a Pilates enthusiast trained in STOTT PILATES, who explains how the Junior Pilates program works. May/June 2017

66

The Program “The program was designed with the intention of developing body awareness at a young age and building a strong foundation to carry throughout their daily lives and future development. The goal is to teach students about the importance of posture and basic exercises that promote proper alignment and healthy

joints, while building core muscle strength, stability, and coordination.”

Key Benefits “Students will get to know their bodies and better understand its biomechanics. They will learn how to use their breathing to promote better movement and how to

Why It’s Needed

connect mind to muscle. They will understand how the body and all of its facets are designed to move and become better attuned to it. Also, it provides children with the opportunity to channel their energy into a physical activity that requires them to continuously challenge themselves and not each other. Because

exercises can be modified to meet personal needs and still be achievable, children will consistently feel motivated, providing them with a sense of empowerment and confidence.”

Age Group

“For a group setting, the target age is 7 to 11 years old. By this age, children have

developed the fine motor and communication skills necessary to reap the full benefits of a class. I would advise a minimum of 1 to 2 sessions per week for at least 10 weeks: the more, the better. It would be great for children to embrace it as a part of their daily lifestyle.”

"Children spend much of their day sitting and even moving in less than optimal positions, whether it is at school, carrying around heavy backpacks or glued to their screens. By exposing them to Pilates, they are not only moving, but are becoming more consciously aware of their movement and the necessity of good posture throughout their daily activity for longevity. With the types of gadgets children are constantly using, they have become conditioned to expect immediate gratification. As a result, become more prone to irritability and aggression. The nature of progression in Pilates is very much gradual and layered, providing a wonderful lesson for children to project patience, practice and commitment to achieve results. If anything, Pilates serves as great way to teach children to utilize their breathing to relax." H

Revive Reading in Your Home WITH MORE AND MORE KIDS TURNING TO THEIR GADGETS AND SMART PHONES FOR ENTERTAINMENT, THE ART OF READING IS SEEMINGLY TAKING A BACK SEAT. HEALTH SPEAKS TO DR. SALIHA AFRIDI, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST IN DUBAI ABOUT REVIVING READING IN YOUR HOME.

WHY READING MATTERS According to Dr. Afridi, the benefits of reading are too many to list, but the main reasons reading is good for children is because it develops their language skills, their critical thinking skills, and their creativity. High reading comprehension scores are also linked to overall academic success.

TECH BURNOUT With so many kids glued to their gadgets for school or entertainment, Dr. Afridi points out that the brain and eyes can get exhausted from the bright lights and the constant engagement. “Even if the child is reading

May/June 2017

70

on the technology, it isn't as good for him as it is to read a book,” she says. “Technology and playing games can also result in a sort of 'techno-burnout' where kids are overstimulated, not sleeping enough, and that results in being disengaged from anything strenuous, and/or related to reading and academics.” Lastly, technology can over stimulate a child to the point where anything that is less stimulating can seem boring. Books, she adds, are obviously not as visually stimulating as a video game so kids who play a lot of video games or who often watch TV might find it harder to engage with the books and reading.

Tips to Promote a Reading Culture in the Home

1.

Read to your children especially when they are young, but also as they get older. Instead of movies or TV, make your home culture where you sit and go on a 'journey' through reading a book.

2.

Read with them- sit with them and have them choose a book and read together as they get older. You can take turns reading out loud to each other.

3.

Visit libraries and bookstores - sit and spend the day in different aisles and have them enjoy the different worlds they can access through reading different books.

4.

Have them see you reading- modeling is the best way to inspire children.

5.

Give their brain a rest from activities. A rested brain will more likely to engage in books than one that is overworked and overstimulated. (Credit: Dr. Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist)

HEALING WITH FOOD

“I had suffered from Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, also known as PoTS and therefore, radically altered my diet to alleviate some of the symptoms. To be honest, I got this idea from research I did on Google. I had taken medication for one year and hadn’t seen the results I wanted and was really at a loose end. So, I began looking at other things I could do to help myself; lots of people were using different elements of lifestyle and diet to manage different kinds of conditions. I was quite interested in that concept and thought I should try it. It took about two years to see real results in terms of actually being able to come off my medication and manage it on a daily basis. But it took three months to a point to what I was doing and then six months to see there really was something positive in what I was doing.”

paprika, cayenne, cumin, turmeric, mustard seeds, ginger, cinnamon, and chili flakes. Then I think dried herbs are important; I keep oregano, thyme, and parsley. Then a must is very good olive oil which makes such a difference and adds such immense flavor. Soy sauce is excellent to have because if you are making something simple like a vegetable quinoa bowl, just a splash of this gives depth and flavor and can make a big difference. Then of course the nut butters like peanut butter and almond butter just because I love them. A good shelf of dried goods like oats, quinoa, brown rice, and then canned goods like tomatoes, chick peas, and coconut milk. So you can get home, open a can of chick peas, cook it with some garlic and canned tomatoes and stir in some paprika and add some avocado or spinach and you have the base for a deliciously healthy meal ready in minutes.”

SIMPLE INGREDIENTS

COMING UP WITH RECIPES

“I always like to try new things and having new things. So, it’s often just about looking in my cupboard and saying ‘I’ve got this and that.’ What can I do with it? More or less, it’s basically getting creative with what I already have.”

MUST-HAVE INGREDIENTS

“I think having a certain stock of things makes a big difference. Like if you come home from work and already have the fundamentals to make a healthy meal and you only need to buy one or two fresh ingredients, I think you are more likely to cook it than if you have nothing to start with. The first is having a very good spice rack as it’s an instant way to add flavor and obviously makes food tastier to eat. I always have

“I believe being healthy is cooking fresh meals with healthy foods using what’s available in your area. You don’t need 101 complicated ingredients. I eat lots of mixed vegetable curries and these don’t need super foods like chia seeds or spirulina. You can focus on your everyday simple ingredients.”

FOOD FADS

“I don’t like a term or a word that puts anything into a box. Personally for me, I think it’s about doing what you enjoy and find sustainable. Put a word on it and then you can’t do much more with it. I really respect everyone, but it doesn’t have to be one way or the other. I try my best to eat more natural, home-cooked foods and less processed foods, more natural foods and more fruit and vegetables. Also, focus on the positives more; so more fruit and vegetables, more natural foods, rather than the negatives like ‘never eat this or that’ as this can create a complicated cycle. If you focus on taking stuff out instead of in, it becomes difficult. This is just a more approachable way of looking at it.”

THE LATEST BOOK

“I think people looked at healthy eating as a bit sad or lonely. It needs to be enjoyable which makes it a sustainable approach. I think that means delicious things that you can share with your friends and all have together.” H Visit: www.deliciouslyella. com

Celebrity Nutritionist Mitun De Sarkar Reveals Her Tips for Healthy Weight Loss Celebrity Diet and Nutrition Consultant Mitun De Sarkar was a key speaker at Mom’s Day Out on April 28, held at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai. She spoke to HEALTH about healthy weight loss and how to get past the dreaded weight plateau.

Weight Plateau After weeks of dieting, suddenly no matter what you do, those last few kilos sometimes won’t budge. According to Mitun, when people go on crash diets, they initially lose a lot of weight because of water loss. “The problem starts when the body starts getting used to this amount of calories and it then needs something

May/June 2017

78

to hold on to. Many women then try to go below this caloric intake which makes it worse, because now the metabolism is going down further with the body getting the signal that it needs to store fat,” she explains.

Shifting Metabolism The common mindset, Mitun adds, is the less we eat, the more we lose which is completely wrong, detail-

ing, “For this, I start shifting the person’s metabolism. One day I will give them really healthy higher calories in the form of avocadoes, beans, lentils, salmon, and coconut. It is this good quality high fat that balances the hormones. Then for a small period of time, I would pre-

scribe high protein with good quality healthy fats and then we go back to a healthy, balanced diet. This actually gives a shift in the metabolism.” She also looks at the internal health of a client, for example, she advises an insulin resistance test, checks vitamin D levels, and B12 levels as all of these have an impact on weight gain and loss.

Cravings Sugar cravings, points out Mitun, are very common in women, explaining, “For that afternoon slump, I advise my clients to have better things ready. Dates are much better than a cookie. Dried figs give you iron and folate. Fruit is nature’s sugar, so have a piece of melon or even a mango--

Variety is the Key Whatever the diet, Mitun does not advocate eating the same foods again and again. She elaborates, “Remember as you are eating healthy foods, add variety as the body needs this. The same goes for exercise; if you do the same exercise over and over, your weight loss will halt; you need to constantly give a shock to your system in healthy ways. Every month try and change by adding in a new food, change the number of calories, or add a new nutrient.”

Your Gut

Super Foods According to Mitun, super foods are very important but are just mostly the normal foods we eat, but those with a higher nutrient dense component. “As long as we include two to three super foods daily in our diet such as chia seeds, quinoa, berries, probiotic yogurt, beans, broccoli, avocado, and spinach in a healthy meal, this will give it balance,” she explains.

ding or some other big event, many women want to lose a little weight quickly to fit into that dress and for this, Mitun does not advocate crash diets as these are neither healthy nor sustainable over time. However, if required by a client, she tweaks whatever it is they are doing, elaborating, “I will increase their exercise and give them foods with negative calories like celery, which may be around 50 calories for a few stalks, but takes the body 100 calories to digest. Also, I try to give them foods with high water content, foods with good quality fats, good quality protein, cut down simple carbs and instead, give better quality carbs such as beans and lentils.”

though it is high in sugar, is full of vitamin C and if seasonal, you will be getting lots of nutrients.”

Quick Weight Loss Whether it’s for an upcoming wed-

Your gut is your second brain, advises Mitun, so listen to it. She explains, “In fact, when I start a person on their healthy weight loss program, I begin by trying to clean the gut in different ways; with hot water and lemon for example, in the mornings or ginger and hot water as a detox. Basically, if you are having flatulence, constipation, or diarrhea, then we need to heal this first and then automatically digestion and fat burning will fall into place.” H

RUYA‌. TURKISH FOOD WITH A

MODERN TWIST

Ruya, located at the fashionable Grosvenor House in the Dubai Marina, juxtaposes Anatolian food with contemporary innovation to serve up a Friday brunch in a fine dining setting that exudes understated sophistication.

May/June 2017

80

A very modern and expansive interior with live entertainment, Ruya has a designated cold portions section with a carefully curated assortment of everything from Turkish cured salmon with Cacik, Apple and Fennel salad, and my two favorites--the Slow Roasted Baby Beetroot with Goats Cheese and Corn Bread and the Burnt Watermelon and Tomato salad with homemade cheese, tarragon, and sumac, and more. There are also lots of fresh breads with honey, assorted cheeses, clotted cream, and jams. From their “Eggs to be Ordered” section, I tried a unique take on scrambled eggs served up in the egg shell mixed with vegetables, feta, and fried sucuk. My daughter sampled slow cooked eggs with roasted garlic, yogurt, and drizzled with chili oil. Both had flavors from Turkey and

added a nice breakfast touch. A nice aspect of Ruya’s brunch is a variety of amuse-bouches that are brought to the table which gave us the chance to try everything without overstuffing ourselves. My favorite was the Cig kofta which we enjoyed with the Turkish Gozleme, a pide made of crispy yukka dough with potato and topped with cheese and herbs. The Feta Borek with zucchini and walnut was a rustic fusion of flavors. Our unanimous favorite was Simit crusted fried calamari with avocado labneh and spicy tomato sauce. From the grill, we sampled the juicy Iskender kebob with tomato sauce and yogurt. The medley of yogurt and tomato sauce balanced out the meatiness of these succulent kebobs. From the “To be Ordered” mains, we had the Marinated Baby Chicken with Pastry Wrapped Rice Pilaf. This

was super tender, and the pastry with rice was flavorful. The meat dish we tried was rib eye steak with Turkish coffee and izot rub accompanied by crispy zaatar potatoes; a dish that was hearty and moreish. Desserts were a mix of East and West; the creamy baked rice pudding hit all the right comfort food notes and then there were crunchy sesame encrusted cookies, baked toffee pudding, and lots of fresh fruit on offer. H Verdict: Ruya celebrates Turkish food with aplomb, adding a twist of gastronomic ingenuity. This is that ideal place to enjoy a leisurely meal overlooking Dubai’s most beautiful neighborhood. QUICK TIPS FOR ORAL HYGIENE DURING RAMADAN

TIP 1: BRUSH AFTER SUHOUR IFTAR MEALS

Dubai International Airport AND

During the month of Ramadan, there are two key meals in the day: Suhour (or the pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (the meal with which Muslims break their day-long fast). These tend to be big meals and often feature a heavy dose of sugary foods. A good practice to add to your dental regime during Ramadan is to brush right after these meals to prevent bacterial build-up. This is particularly important for kids, who tend to eat a lot more sweets than adults.

TIP 2: DON’T FORGET TO FLOSS AND USE MOUTHWASH

Dental floss serves to clean up the remnants of food stuck between the teeth, while mouthwash washes away the bacteria. If flossing and the use of mouthwash are not already a part of

your daily dental regime, make sure to incorporate them in during the month of Ramadan. This will prevent the richer foods you consume from adversely affecting your teeth.

TIP 3: MULTIPLY THE CONSUMPTION OF WATER DURING NON-FASTING HOURS Makani 3538897160

Hydration is extremely important for oral hygiene and, in turn, dental well-being. In fact, a lack of water consumption is associated with bacterial build up and, subsequently, bad breath. To avoid this, simply scale up the amount of water you consume during the non-fasting hours. During Iftar, drink approximately two to three glasses of water to freshen the mouth. Additionally, cut down on coffee, tea, soda and all other caffeinated drinks – they have diuretic effects and thus dehydrate the body further.

TIP 4: INCREASE YOUR FRUIT AND VEGETABLE INTAKE

Ongoing research indicates that antioxidants and other nutrients found

in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts strengthen the body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation, which can help protect the teeth and gums. Instead of consuming sugary, carbohydrate-rich or acidic foods during meals, eat the above foods to minimize the amount of time teeth are exposed to acid. Keep your meals healthy. Whenever possible, opt for steaming, grilling or baking. If you use oil for cooking, settle for healthy options like canola oil.

TIP 5: AVOID STICKY FOODS

Any food that contains sugar or starch can cause tooth decay by dissolving the protective enamel on the teeth. But more importantly is how long a particular food stays on your teeth. For example, some of the most damaging foods are those that mash into the tops of the molars at the back of the mouth and don't dissolve quickly. Ideally, avoid sticky foods as much as possible during Ramadan. (Credit: Dr. Maria Alexandra Arevalo Gabriele, General and Cosmetic Dentist)

PATIENT CENTERED APPROACH TO TACKLING INFERTILITY KEY IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Speaking at the Merck Fertility Conference in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Healthcare Specialists discussed the importance of providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences and needs, and ensuring that

patient values guide all clinical decisions. “High-quality care for patients faced with infertility should be patient-centered. As well as the technical components

in care, human factors, in order of patient's priority have been identified as the attitude of and relationship with staff, communication, patient involvement and privacy and emotional support,” said Prof. Mark Bowman, Medical Director of Genea IVF, Sydney and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Sydney. High levels of care in patient communication and interaction, in addition to environment, ensure that patients receive the emotional support during the treatment to lessen the drop-out rates during the IVF process. This, in turn, means an increased success rate of assisted reproductive technology (ART) techniques - the tools used to achieve pregnancy in procedures

such as fertility medication and in vitro fertilization. Such technology includes an ultrasound scanner that plugs into a smartphone and also patient tracking and unique identifiers allowing for instant recognition when patients arrive in clinics and failsafe patient ID at procedure times. “Whilst assisted conception remains a complex process, ovarian stimulation and procedures are fast becoming easier and better tolerated. Given cumulative pregnancy is the best measure of success, reducing dropout remains an imperative from a patient perspective and from a business perspective,” commented Dr. Karim El Masry, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Noor Hospitals.

DUBAI HEALTH AUTHORITY AND DANONE NUTRICIA MIDDLE EAST LAUNCH HEALTHY PLATES MATES PROJECT To tackle the issue of childhood obesity at the grass-roots level, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has collaborated with Danone Nutrition and Right Bite Express to launch a yearlong initiative known as Healthy Plate Mates Project. The authority’s Clinical Nutrition Department will reach out to nurseries across the emirate to educate both parents and teachers about inculcating healthy-eating habits for their toddlers. His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami, Chairman of the Board and Director General of DHA, highlighted the need to continue to work with various stakeholders to raise awareness about childhood obesity and highlight ways to tackle the issue. In line with DHA’s Health Strategy 2016-2021, Al Qatami said the authority is highly committed to raise public awareness about health issues and children’s health and wellbeing are particularly important as education at a young age can lead to healthy, active adults. “This is an important age group that

should not be ignored because toddlers are learning to enjoy the taste of various foods and if from this tender age they are exposed to healthy, unprocessed foods they will learn to have a taste for such foods in their school-going years. This will prevent them from developing childhood obesity, which is a global health concern,” said Dr. Ahmad Bin Kalban, CEO of Hospitals Services Sector at DHA. Hans Van Der Wulp, General Manager of Danone Nutricia Middle- East DMCC, said: “We are highly committed to raising the importance of healthy nutrition and good health. Scientific evidence shows that the nutrition a mother and child receive during the First 1,000 Days - from conception until two years of age - can significantly influence health in adulthood and is a unique window of opportunity. Optimal nutrition during the First 1,000 Days can reduce the occurrence of non-communicable

diseases such as stunting, allergy, heart disease and diabetes in later life. The aim of this campaign is to reach out to parents of toddlers to encourage them to continue the course of providing healthy meals as the toddler years can lay the foundation of healthy eating that toddlers can continue during their school-going years and beyond.”

Clinical Nutrition at DHA, said as part of this project, the Authority will provide teacher training and distribute a 22-week healthy eating curriculum for them. Parents will also undergo training. The authority will also distribute educational material and kidfriendly healthy eating games such as flash cards so that toddlers can learn about healthy eating in a fun and interactive manner.
