FOREWORD

To continue the momentum into the future, our strengths have become a part of the “fabric” of what Thumbay Group is all about. The biggest and most advanced hospital for physical therapy and rehabilitation has opened at Thumbay Medicity, Al Jurf, Ajman. Mr. K. E. Faizal, Founder and Chairman of KEF Holdings was the chief guest of the opening ceremony. Operating under the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group, the Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital (TPTRH) is a teaching hospital and an academic health center under the Gulf Medical University Academic Health System (GMUAHS). The hospital operates in collaboration with internationally renowned Villa Beretta Rehabilitation Center, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Valduce Hospital, Italy. It is attached to Thumbay University Hospital Complex with 50 dedicated beds specifically for rehabilitation and very soon, a therapeutic garden in the upcoming Thumbay University Hospital. As we come to the end of the academic year at GMU, it will soon be time for our team to move on to the new, and we hope even more exciting and rewarding programs and ventures take

shape in the coming months. We are very happy by the tremendous response from prospective students ready to join the university for various programs in the new academic year beginning from September.

The new coffee shops are located at Thumbay Medicity and the Department of Land & Real Estate Regulation, Ajman. They are well on course to open 100 outlets globally by 2022 as envisioned in our strategic plan.

Gulf Medical University established an important strategic partnership with Egypt’s General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes. The agreement seeks to launch collaborative efforts in training, academia, and research. This is an important partnership in terms of the future strategic direction of GMU. The agreement was signed at GMU by Professor Dr. Hani Nasr, Chairman, GOTHI and Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor, GMU. The agreement also aims to conduct collaborative joint research with the support of GMU’s Precision Medicine Research Institute, in addition to organizing joint conferences and workshops.

Leading pathologists in the UAE were honored and the latest trends in pathology were discussed at the Pathology Society Meeting during a gathering of renowned experts in pathology, organized by Thumbay Labs in association with Emirates Medical Association. The ‘7th Annual Conference on Latest Trends in Cardiology’ was jointly hosted by Gulf Medical University and Thumbay Hospital, Dubai and in continuation of our commitment to the advancement of healthcare, a symposium on ‘Evidence-Based Clinical Practice’ was organized by the College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, Abu Dhabi.

THE ACNE AND FOOD CONNECTION While research has stated that there isn’t a particular food that causes acne, still those suffering from it can minimize outbreaks by eating good-for-the-skin foods.

July/Aug 2018

12

Top Skin Foods

• Sunflower seeds and almonds are loaded with vitamin E which is found in the skin’s top layers. This can guard the cells’ outer membrane so cells stay healthy. • Fortified cereal, lean meat, poultry, and oysters contain zinc and iron, which are minerals that contribute to cell production, as well as natural cell sloughing, which keeps dullness at bay. • Low-glycemic foods keep insulin steady while refined carbohydrates and sugar spike it. The surges may boost the production of androgens which when elevated, can trigger pimples and acne. • Wild salmon, Atlantic mackerel, walnuts, and eggs are bursting with omega-3 fatty acids which fight inflammation in the body caused by UV rays and stress. • Strawberries, kiwis, citrus fruits, red peppers, and broccoli contain vitamin C which is vital for the production and formation of collagen.

THE FUTURE IS NOW‌ AI AND DIABETES Diabetes is a healthcare epidemic that is skyrocketing globally at an alarming rate. Yet, Dr. Sandeep Reddy, Medical Informatician from Melbourne, Australia explains that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can drastically help patients suffering from diabetes.

Reasons to Employ AI

The three main reasons health services should consider employing AI techniques with regards to diabetic or pre-diabetic patients are: firstly, evidence from prior studies that AI enabled applications improve compliance with treatment

and encourage regular visits to clinics. Secondly, the ability to integrate with electronic health records of the patient and analyze laboratory results and other biological parameters of pre-diabetic patients to predict their risk of developing diabetes. Finally, through the use of computer vision and machine learning, diabetic

retinopathy can be detected even without an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This feature is very useful in resourcepoor settings where specialist workforce may not be available on site to interpret retinal fundoscopic images.

progression of diabetes type 2. By using machine learning and natural language processing techniques, health services and clinicians can be connected to patients between their visits, monitor their health parameters, and coach them towards a healthy lifestyle.

Pre-Diabetes to Diabetes

The Future of AI

Both for pre-diabetic and diabetic patients, it is known that the modification of risk factors like obesity, poor nutrition, and sedentary lifestyle mitigates the

Health services across the world, both in developed and developing countries will see increasing adoption of AI techniques in all aspects of healthcare as the potential for improved patient outcomes,

minimization of medical errors, and cost savings are demonstrated. Simultaneously, there may be a degree of resistance from clinicians and patients in incorporating AI applications in healthcare because of the potential for disruption in traditional models of care. So, there will be some work required by health services and software developers to involve clinicians and patients in the development of AI solutions and convincing them of the benefits in using AI enabled health applications. LOTS OF US INVEST MONEY IN EXPENSIVE PROGRAMS TO HELP WITH DETOXIFICATION, YET HEALTH LEARNS THAT THERE ARE ACTUALLY EASIER WAYS TO HELP YOUR BODY DETOX, AS FOLLOWS. Including prebiotics (non-digestible food products already in the colon) is helpful. This includes foods containing FOS (fructooligosaccharides) which are found in natural honey, onions, asparagus, rye, artichokes, bananas, and oats.

Foods high in specific phytochemicals provide key nutrients that support detoxification pathways. These include broccoli, cauliflower, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, and shallots.

Drinking about an extra liter of water a day will usually help us eliminate more toxins. Increasing liquids and decreasing fats will shift the balance strongly toward improved elimination and less toxin build-up.

Moving from an acid-generating diet to a more alkaline one can help trigger detoxification. Acid-forming foods, such as meats, milk products, breads and baked goods, and especially refined sugar and carbohydrate products, will increase body acidity and lead to more mucus production, while the more alkaline vegetarian foods trigger cleansing in the body.

Probiotics (microbial foods that can be used to improve intestinal bacterial balance) include fermented dairy products such as live-culture yogurts, commercial biotic preparations, and miso. H

IS YOUR LIFESTYLE PUTTING YOU AT RISK OF A STROKE? Most of us know the link between our emotions and our health, but what is less known is the link between emotional wellbeing and the risk of a stroke. HEALTH learns more.

July/Aug 2018

18

According to Dr. Andrew Russman, D.O., Head of a Stroke Program and Medical Director of a Comprehensive Stroke Center, people will very often deal with an emotional upset by making bad lifestyle choices, such as increasing smoking or eating junk food, which often leads to obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes. These then all come together as a significant increase in our risk of stroke.

The Study

A Japanese study published earlier this year used unemployment as a commonly identifiable sign that someone had experienced a period of high personal stress, and analyzed the histories of around 40,000 men and

women. “The results showed a clear correlation between the stress caused by job loss, and increased smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes, and ultimately to an increased proportion that suffered a stroke,” explained Dr. Russman.

EARLY SIGNS

To check for signs of a stroke, and to respond appropriately, always remember the words

‘BE FAST’: B = Balance – Is the person having trouble with balance? E = Eyes – Is the person having visual problems? F = Face – Is there droopiness in the face? A = Arms – Is there any weakness in the arms or legs? S = Speech – Is the person having difficulty speaking? T = Time – Time to call for an ambulance. H

Hygiene Habits All Children Must Learn Hygiene practices are instilled at a young age to prevent the development and spread of infection. Here are four life-changing hygiene habits for children.

Hand washing

is an integral part of hygiene that parents should teach by example at a young age. Hand-washing is a basic activity that takes just several seconds, but this habit can keep germs and infections away.

July/Aug 2018

24

Bathing daily

starts from a very early age. Kids learn from example, so watching parents doing the same thing encourages them to do the same.

Fingernails should

be clipped by parents every week. Keeping the nails short is a good way to lessen the risk of germs under the nails.

Oral hygiene

is also very important and parents must teach their children from a very early age the technique of proper flossing and brushing. Use a colorful character toothbrush and made-for-kids fluoride toothpaste to make it more fun. H

WHY YOU REALLY NEED YOUR

BEAUTY SLEEP We hear so much about how sleep is important for our wellbeing, but it is also important for our appearance. Here’s how getting enough sleep can boost your beauty quotient.

July/Aug 2018

26

Helps with Anti-Aging

Chronically missing out on good quality sleep indirectly applies stress to the body. Over time, this can wreak havoc on the skin as the collagen thins out and can even break down. Over time, your skin will look lackluster and may start to show fine lines and wrinkles.

Tired Eyes

Not sleeping well on a regular basis can trigger dark circles which occur when the blood vessels under the eyes dilate. Even under eye puffiness is a common sideeffect due to lack of sleep and/ or due to water retention.

Bad Hair Days

Lack of sleep over time can trigger an increase in cortisol, which can trigger a condition known as telogen effluvium. This can lead to hair thinning and even hair loss over time. H

Easy Lifestyle Tweaks to Help Fight Aging

July/Aug 2018

28

While cutting-edge cosmetic treatments and advanced skin creams can indeed do wonders for our appearance, simple lifestyle tweaks can also help turn back the clock. EXERCISE: Not only do you look and feel better, exercise can actually boost muscle power and endurance. It helps with posture and improved bone density; not to mention the endorphins released during exercise help with depression. FIND POSITIVE WAYS OF DEALING WITH STRESS: Scientists at University of San Francisco discovered that chronic stress triggers shorter telomeres – the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that are a measure of health. Chronic and stressful life events are linked with the shortening of telomeres in the cells of the immune system. GOOD QUALITY SLEEP: The deepest and most regenerative sleep occurs between 10 pm to 2 am while around 10 pm is the transformational phase of sleep. This is linked with the body’s internal repair and restoration. CONTROL YOUR APPETITE: The concept is simple; avoid eating until you feel full and if practiced regularly, it will become a habit. According to researchers, consuming fewer calories can actually help slow down the aging process and the onset of age-related diseases. H (Credit: www.sharecare.com) July/Aug 2018

How to Keep Your Kids Safe this Summer While summer is always very hot, for children out of school for the holidays it means play time. Here’s how to keep kids healthy during the summer.

July/Aug 2018

30

Key Risks

Dehydration among kids is very common during the summer as they forget to drink water while they play. There is also a higher risk of heat stroke due to the hotter temperature.

Early Signs

During the summer time, some of the early signs of dehydration to look out for include: dry skin, sunken eyes, and/or dry mouth which can be life threatening. Also, heat strokes can cause dizziness, headaches, and rise in body temperatures.

Treatment

If your child has any of the aforementioned symptoms - such as dehydration rehydrate your child with water, fluids, and minerals. Any of these conditions should also be checked by the doctor to be sure the correct treatment is being provided. PROFESSOR HANI SAKLA

WARNS ABOUT SURGICAL EYE COLOR CHANGE COMPLICATIONS AND RISKS The color of the eyes is one of the most attractive facial features, and is recently becoming an obsession for many people who are willing to change the color of their eyes permanently; however, is that possible? Or, is this type of surgery safe for the eyes and vision? Professor Hani Sakla, Consultant in Ophthalmology at Ebsar Eye Surgery Center in Dubai, and member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery explains more. with several cases from other countries that require immediate treatment as a result of complications caused by the eye color change surgery.

Professor Hani Sakla

What is the technique?

It is a cosmetic surgery that is done by transplanting an artificial iris above the natural iris which gives the eye its color. Therefore, when the iris pigment is brown, the color of the eye is also brown. It is important to highlight that the circular aperture (pupil) in the center of the iris is responsible for allowing light inside the eye.

Who are undergoing such operations?

Many people are dissatisfied with the natural color of their eyes and avoid using dangerous colored contact lenses, so they decide to undergo artificial iris implantation surgery which has a higher risk. For example, any person with a natural brown iris is able to place a green or blue artificial iris.

What is the artificial iris made of and how is it implanted?

The artificial iris is a silicon-like plastic material transplanted through the aperture of the eye by inserting the iris inside the eye and placing it above the original iris.

What are the risks and complications of cosmetic iris implant surgery?

This surgery is very dangerous and can damage the person’s vision. The angle between the cornea and the iris is the angle at which the liquid produced inside the eye acts to is drained. When the artificial iris is left above the original one, it closes the angle, causing damage over time due to chronic inflammation and this is due to the friction between the artificial iris with the tissues of the eye’s corner that leads to its inflammation and obstruction and causes a high level of eye pressure. It is important to mention that high eye pressure leads to optic atrophy that causes a permanent loss of vision.

July/Aug 2018

32

What types of challenges and cases have you faced in removing the artificial colored iris? What are the risks to the original iris?

The tissue of the original iris is known to be very sensitive, and as a result of the contact between the artificial iris and the original iris, chronic inflammation will occur. This may cause intraocular inflammation, adhesions between the iris and the eye lens, and appearance of an eye cataract which may lead to a loss of vision.

Can the patient’s vision be saved with the appearance of cataract?

The patient’s vision can be saved only if the eye tissues were healthy and in good condition, so we can remove the cataract and implant a new lens inside the eye, and then remove the artificial iris. In cases of high eye pressure and optic nerve damage, removing the cataract and inserting the lens will not improve the patient’s vision, and that is because the optic atrophy stops the process of sending images from the eyes to the brain.

Where is cosmetic iris implant surgery available and is it popular in the UAE?

Unfortunately, artificial iris surgery has become more popular this year, especially in Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, and Turkey. However, this operation is considered unethical and is not recognized by any medical authority, as there are no studies or research that has demonstrated its safety and efficacy. As for the UAE, it is prohibited according to the laws which state that any harm caused to a healthy organ in the body is considered illegal. When we add an undesirable organ inside a healthy eye, we are triggering tremendous damage to that eye. Meanwhile, we are dealing

We have treated three cases for patients in their thirties, and the last case was a woman who had undergone the artificial iris transplantation surgery in Iran, but then insisted we remove it after she suffered from several eye disorders; such as pain, infections, and weakness in vision. She also suffered from different lens complications including eye pressure and iris inflammation. After removing the artificial iris, we discovered that she is facing problems in her original iris and atrophy in her muscles, which are responsible for controlling the amount of light entering the eye. When the eye is exposed to strong light, the muscles contract to control the amount of light entering the eye, and during the night, the muscles become relaxed to widen the pupil which helps more light enter the eye. As a result of the friction between the muscle and the artificial iris, the muscle was exposed to atrophy; however, she was saved from vision loss.

Does the artificial iris last forever?

It was believed to remain in the eye indefinitely, however, we have not encountered any case so far which has not suffered from complications and problems due to artificial iris transplantation.

What is your advice for individuals undergoing this surgery?

I recommend people not rush in making random decisions without further knowledge on the outcome of such surgeries. Also, I would highly advise they think carefully before undergoing any surgery related to their body, especially sensitive areas like the eyes.

How to Save During Travel LET’S FACE IT, HOLIDAYS MEAN A MORE RELAXED OUTLOOK TOWARDS EVERYTHING AND THAT USUALLY INCLUDES OUR NORMAL SPENDING HABITS. BUT INSTEAD OF OVERDOING IT THIS SUMMER, APPLY THESE EASY, YET PRACTICAL RULES TO STAY WITHIN A BUDGET.

July/Aug 2018

36

LOOK FOR PACKAGE DEALS To save money while you’re travelling, look for deals in advance that include meals, fivestar accommodation, activities, and transfers. STICK TO A BUDGET It sounds logical, but often times we go overboard and end up spending much more than we really intend to. Be sure to include all spending from food to shopping to taxi fare. USE A TRAVEL FRIENDLY CREDIT CARD Before you travel, look for a credit card that offers low rates for overseas purchases, a loyalty points program, and other travel perks built into the card.

LONGER STAY If you plan to stay for a longer time, why not book a serviced apartment that includes a kitchen and laundry facilities? This way you can save money on laundry bills and food while still enjoying the amenities of a hotel. RESEARCH IS KEY Before you travel, research about the place you will be visiting, including all of the sights and activities. With a plan in hand, you’re less likely to waste money on unnecessary things. H (Credit: www. creditsimple.com)

EATING OUT Rather than continuously eating in your hotel, look for local restaurants. This will give you a flavor of the regional cuisine and will definitely help you save some money.

The Basics of Airplane Etiquette THESE DAYS, FLYING HAS BECOME MORE CHALLENGING THAN EVER WITH TIGHTER SECURITY REGULATIONS AND CRAMPED SEATING. HEALTH REVEALS SOME GOLDEN RULES FOR AIRLINE TRAVEL TO MAKE THE JOURNEY MORE PLEASANT.

July/Aug 2018

38

RESPECT EVERYONE AROUND YOU With armrests, try to work out a viable solution so both you and the passenger next to you can be comfortable during the journey. Also, think twice about reclining your seat as far back as possible as it lessens the amount of space the passenger has behind you. DON’T OVERDO CONVERSATION If you like to chat, but sense the passenger next to you has no interest in doing so, respect this. If

you are flying with family, speak in a lower tone of voice, especially when the majority of passengers are sleeping.

Take care when you open the plastic salad dressing, condiments, and beverage containers as they splatter easily.

BOARDING THE FLIGHT As you are boarding the flight, hold your carry-on bag in front of you and store your bag under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment adjacent to your seat.

HYGIENE Consider your seat as your domain and keep it tidy by disposing any unwanted litter in the bin, not in the pocket of the seat in front of you. Also, if you remove your shoes, be sure to wear clean socks to avoid any bad odors. H

MEALS Be cautious with food trays and hot liquids.

The Mind Trip: How Travelling Helps Your Mental Health In a busy life schedule, a getaway treat can recharge your psychological batteries and leave you ready for new challenges. Here are some reasons why travelling abroad can add to your mental wellbeing. BUST YOUR STRESS

From work overload to family responsibilities, we often need a break from it all. Travelling abroad takes us away from our stressors which often puts our stress response on hold.

July/Aug 2018

40

GAIN PERSPECTIVES

Being in contact with people of different cultures and religions helps us have an open mind that accepts differences. This also teaches us new activities and ways of thinking that we can incorporate into our daily routine.

RESET YOUR MIND

Being away from stressors gives us time to detox our minds. The sight of new places, especially those close to nature, can be mesmerizing enough to release the negative energies we may have internalized.

EXPLORE YOURSELF

When we independently interact with new cultures, we identify new things that we may or may not like. Moving away from the routine and what we are used to enables us to get in touch with what truly inspires us. H

The Negative Side-Effects of Social Media WITH SCHOOLS CLOSED FOR THE SUMMER, MORE KIDS ARE TURNING TO SOCIAL MEDIA AS A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. HOWEVER, PARENTS NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO SOME OF THE NEGATIVE SIDE-EFFECTS OF TOO MUCH EXPOSURE TO SOCIAL MEDIA.

July/Aug 2018

42

A Weak Sense of Self

The more media exposure children and teens have, the greater the chance of them being influenced by external sources, which has correlation to heightened insecurities. Today’s youth have the world at their fingertips via the internet, which can lead to added confusion and doubts.

Increased Peer Pressure

One may feel the need to Photoshop their photos to

look a certain way or feel the pressure to “like” other people and befriend others they may not necessarily want to. This all stems from external pressures.

Addicted to Validation Self-esteem and self-worth become linked to the followers, the comments, and the likes received on social media.

Poor Relationships We are connecting with many people using social media, but our quality of

relationships is suffering greatly. Children and teens are in the process of learning how to form and develop relationships, and when they have heavy social media influences, it can result in them having a very shallow understanding of relationships, how to make them, and how to keep them. Four Rules for Safe Online Shopping Online shopping is very convenient, but what happens when someone steals your data? Here are some simple rules to keep your data safe when online shopping.

July/Aug 2018

44

Don’t use the same passwords for sites that contain financial data. For instance, have different passwords for your banking website and your PayPal account. These passwords should also differ from social media websites.

Using familiar websites during online shopping is another good rule of thumb. You may enjoy online boutique shopping, but sites like Amazon and eBay have more security as well as fraud prevention. Unfortunately, many boutique shopping websites exist only to steal credit card information.

Track your digital footprint by asking yourself three questions: How many websites have I logged into in the last 30 days? How many of these sites store my payment information? How many websites have important documents with personal information?

Having multiple email accounts makes it more difficult for people to obtain all of your data at one time. If you have an account for business use and you see unauthorized activity in your business accounts, you can immediately change passwords and increase security on your other accounts. H

From Gulf Medical University, UAE.

When Your Brain Pays You Back With a global obsession to look younger, there is another aspect we need to focus on— preserving our minds and cognitive abilities against a forgetful memory or Alzheimer’s disease in the future. HEALTH delves deeper.

What Science Says The primary gear that the body runs by is our nervous system and the cardinal stone of this is our brain that bestows us with thinking and cognition. Our bodies are composed of cells that are combined and create the brain. The brain factually is composed of approximately 100 billion, irreplaceable long-lived cells, and scientists say that it is like a piece of plastic that can be reshaped, get rewired with its nerve cells connections, and like a computer, you can reinstall or uninstall programs (habits and patterns of thoughts.) It is this flexibility of the brain that is referred to scientifically as “neuroplasticity”.

July/Aug 2018

46

You are Your Cells We think of ourselves holistically, so as aging progresses, we start to get wrinkles and we get fatigued more easily, but since we are the summation of approximately 40 trillion cells; factually, we age because our cells age. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is usually developed in some people primarily when they age. The person starts to develop symptoms of memory loss and cognitive faculty deterioration. The Big Question Is there a preventive measure we can do or take? According to science, the answer is yes. The answer lies under what they call “cognitive reserve” (CR) which is like a reservoir of your mental capabilities which enables you to continue performing your activities which despite if AD starts to affect you, you would have a backup. How CR works? When an individual has AD, the brain starts to get eaten slowly and symptoms are developed as a result. It is here when CR via utilizing neuroplasticity plays its card. This partially can be explained as follows. New circuits of nerve cells connections

are formed, or by using the same already existing intact networks more efficiently, or by shifting the task to alternative circuits, thus bypassing the damaged area and taking over its task. CR can be imparted

by tackling the daily activities of our lives as some habits and behavior patterns can increase the reservoir and thus, will have a protective measure against AD.

The Factors This potentially includes three factors; firstly, intellectual activities which stimulate our thinking, for instance, by challenging our minds as in solving problems or seeking education. Secondly, the social activities of the person: an individual with strong familial and social bonds, utilizes leisure time productively, or attends religious meetings are a few examples of protective factors. Lastly are physical activities which will enhance the blood circulation to the brain and thus, improve its function. By practicing these behavior patterns, the brain will pay you back by providing you with a reservoir of protective factors to guard against early manifestation of AD. H

How Air Travel Changes

Your Skin Even those with the best skin will often find that during a long flight, the skin becomes dull, dry, and lackluster. Here are some of the most common skin ailments during travel and how to treat them effectively.

July/Aug 2018

50

Cracked Lips

Being at high altitude can definitely take a toll on your skin and can cause dry, cracked lips. Avoid wearing lipstick on the flight and instead, apply a hydrating lip balm to ensure your lips stay hydrated.

Redness

Sometimes for no reason, flying at a high altitude can trigger fierce rashes. Be sure to keep a small tube

of hydrocortisone cream in your kit to apply immediately. If this is not available, apply ice cubes to subside the itchiness.

Breakouts

Even those of us who are not prone to breakouts may develop a sudden breakout on the flight. Keep a tiny tube of pure zinc (diaper rash cream) to apply on any inflammation. H

Dry and Flaky Skin

During longer flights, it is critical to maintain the overall moisture and integrity of your skin. Avoid wearing makeup on the flight and instead, apply a good quality moisturizer. Also, drink as much water as possible.

THE IDEAL TRAVEL BEAUTY KIT CHECKLIST PACKING FOR A HOLIDAY IS HARD ENOUGH, BUT NARROWING DOWN THE BEAUTY ESSENTIALS WOMEN NEED IS PERHAPS EVEN HARDER. HERE ARE THE MUST-CARRY BEAUTY ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY TO KEEP YOU LOOKING GORGEOUS.

July/Aug 2018

52

Your skincare:

It is just as important to maintain a good skincare regime on vacation as it is at home. So rather than purchase trial size products, fill travel sized bottles with your favorite cleanser and toner.

Sheet masks:

These days, you can pack several of these in your kit for a quick pick-me-up. Use one for hydration after travel and one for rejuvenating after a long day of activities. The possibilities are endless.

Dry shampoo:

If you have a hectic travel schedule, pack a dry shampoo to revive your hair in-between washes as this will absorb oil and extend the life of a blow-dry.

It will also instantly refresh any style on the go.

Multipurpose makeup:

Your makeup products during travel should be long-wearing and water resistant. Small palettes with complementary eye shadows, blush, and bronzer in handy compacts will save on your luggage allowance. A good quality BB cream or tinted primer with built-in SPF can give you flawless skin quickly.

Hands and feet:

Just like hair and skin, your hands and feet can become dry with air travel. Therefore, a multitasking product to treat the hands and feet is perfect. H

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING SUNSCREEN

July/Aug 2018

54

With the huge variety of sun protection creams available, trying to figure out the best one for your skin type and lifestyle can be confusing. Here’s help…

PAY ATTENTION TO THE SPF: With the climatic conditions in the UAE, it is crucial to choose a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30.

ingredients such a titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Sunscreens labelled as broad spectrum include both UVA and UVB filters and should be the preferred choice.

WATER AND SWEAT RESISTANCE: Such sunscreens will provide protection against harmful UV rays for a minimum of 40 minutes, so for example, if you apply sunscreen and go for a swim, a water resistant sunscreen will be effective for a maximum of 30 to 40 minutes after which you will have to reapply.

ALWAYS USE SUNSCREEN BASED ON YOUR SKIN TYPE: Water-based sunscreen is best suited for acne prone and oily skin.

UVA FILTERS: It is important to check for UVA filters/

DO NOT USE THE SAME SUNSCREEN FOR KIDS: They have much more sensitive skin and require special sunscreens that are available in the market. H (Credit: Dr. Varsha Arun, specialist dermatologist)

Celebrating Emirati Culture‌ Meet Her Highness Sheikha Maytha Hasher Al Maktoum

July/Aug 2018

56

HEALTH speaks with Her Highness Sheikha Maytha Hasher Al Maktoum, Founder of BeYou Boutique, who brings out the best of Emirati heritage in her own contemporary way.

FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT I launched my first brand Cotton Candy out of my love for flip flops and the beach. My family has always been a driving force, they supported my ideas and were always welcome to anything new that I wanted to pursue. I am very inspired by my mom and dad, what they have been through, their experiences, and their advice. They are my biggest role models.

INSPIRATION

“I was always inspired by the trendiest concept store, Colette in Paris. It was my dream to have a multi-brand boutique. What pushed this dream further was the start of my own flip flop brand, Cotton Candy. I found it was difficult to get it into the market, so I was very determined to create something that would ease the process for other emerging designers. It is a platform for designers worldwide – overseas and regional. That is one main reason why we have recently expanded to our new space in Dar Al Wasl Mall in Jumeirah; we needed a bigger space.”

EMPOWERMENT

“Women are strongly encouraged and empowered by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE, and Ruler of Dubai to pursue their dreams. We are provided with all tools, facilities, and education. This leaves no reason to not pursue your dream.”

DUBAI’S UNIQUENESS

“Dubai is unique because it is in the beginner stage. You can do things any way you want, there are no fixed rules. When you have a newer platform and space – you can fulfill what hasn’t been done before. Dubai is a hub and a wonderful and diverse mix of various styles and fashion brands.”

Fitness Routine

Luckily for me, I have always led an active life, thanks to my parents who always encouraged us to be active. Earlier, I used to play badminton in the morning, and now, my workout routine comprises of a mix of yoga, Pilates, dance, and weights. Also, I am very consistent with my workout routine. Even when I am travelling or shooting, I try to squeeze out time for my workout session.

Healthy Diet Plan

“I religiously follow a healthy diet plan which consists of six meals a day. My diet comprises of foods rich in dietary fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Also, I avoid eating rice for dinner and I stay clear of junk and sugary foods as much as I can.”

Personal Health Tips

“I make sure that after every few hours I drink coconut water or fruit/vegetable juice. This keeps my body hydrated and my cells active, thereby leading to weight loss. Also, we should alter our diet once every few weeks or consume fewer or more calories than the usual diet which helps keep the metabolism firing.”

Sleep Habits

“I believe one needs a minimum of eight hours of sleep to live a healthy life. Though I sleep for six hours, I try and catch up on my sleep whenever possible.”

Nurturing the Spirit

“I believe that yoga is the best way to nourish our body and soul. It not only helps me relax physically, but mentally as well. I start my daily fitness regime with 10 rounds of Surya Namaskar, followed by Asanas to strengthen my spine and improve posture. I have included deep breathing as part of my yoga routine for additional health benefits.”

A Guide to Weight Busting Fitness During the Holidays HOLIDAYS USUALLY MEANS LOTS OF FOOD, FUN TIMES WITH FAMILY, AND OFTEN, A RELAXED ATTITUDE TOWARDS FITNESS. HEALTH REVEALS SOME EASY, YET EFFECTIVE WAYS TO AVOID UNWANTED WEIGHT GAIN THIS SUMMER.

July/Aug 2018

62

To help you and your family keep in shape during your holiday, aim to walk as a family as much as possible. If the weather is too hot, go for a walk in the evenings or very early in the mornings.

Organize your time. The night before, prioritize your tasks to include workouts. Some days it might be best to exercise early in the morning. Other times it’s better to work out at night.

If you are having a holiday by the beach, take a daily walk in the shallow part of the water and push your legs against the water rather than lifting them. This will help to tone your legs and also give you a nice cardio workout.

If your hotel has a gym, make use of it. While it requires planning, organize your day where you can use the gym before breakfast in the morning to kick start your day.

If you want to explore your holiday location, rent bikes if available. Not only will you enjoy exploring as a family, but your fitness quota will be fulfilled. H

PRACTICING YOGA AT HOME? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Yoga is a great way to stay fit, healthy, and also maintain a peace of mind. But before you embark on a yoga routine at home, keep the following points in mind.

July/Aug 2018

64

Create a space:

Set aside a space dedicated to your yoga practice. Make sure it is free from furniture that could create a hazard to you as you practice various yoga Asanas.

Invest in the proper equipment: If you don’t already have a yoga sticky mat, invest in one. There are yoga mats for every budget and taste.

Seek instruction:

Once you find a style and a teacher you like, attend a few yoga classes. Then you can develop yourself privately.

Select your style:

There are so many styles of yoga to choose from that if you don’t like one, there are several others to try.

Start slowly:

Start with small increments of time. Yoga was not designed as a fitness routine, but as a way to achieve spiritual, mental, and physical purification. H

WHY ALL OF US SHOULD BE SWIMMING Many of us who never learned to swim assume it’s too late to learn, but the fact is that not only is swimming an enjoyable way to spend time together as a family, it’s a great way to stay fit during the hotter months. Here are some reasons why all of us should be swimming.

July/Aug 2018

66

Swimming can help you lose inches and weight and also build muscle tone. Habitual swimmers, according to research, are biologically around 20 years younger than their actual age as swimmers blood pressure, cognition levels, cholesterol, and cardiovascular fitness levels were comparable to a younger age group. An average swim can burn around 450 calories an hour and because water is denser

than air, swimming is similar to resistance training. Besides cooling you down, swimming exercises the heart, lungs, and muscles with very little joint strain. Swimming can also help develop overall strength and endurance. It can give you yoga-like flexibility. Feel-good endorphins are released during swimming and therefore, can help you cope better with stress. H

Bring along headphones and electronic tablets with some favorite movies already downloaded. When used in moderation, these give children the option to watch movies, play games, and listen to music.

Create a busy bag:

In this, include coloring books, art books, and other fun things your children have not yet seen. This will keep them happy and entertained during the flight.

Bring along snacks:

While many airlines now offer specific child meals, sometimes children get hungry at odd times. Being prepared with a few snacks including fresh fruit, cookies, crackers and cheese, and small sandwiches can help pacify a cranky child. H

STAY SAFE

ON YOUR NEXT TRIP

EVER TAKE A TRIP TO AN EXOTIC ISLAND DESTINATION YOU READ ABOUT IN A LUXURY TRAVEL MAGAZINE OR JUST A QUICK BUSINESS TRIP DURING THE WINTER, WHERE EVERYONE AROUND YOU SEEMED ILL? DURING YOUR HOLIDAYS, THE LAST THING YOU WANT IS TO GET SIDELINED WITH A COLD.

While you’re shopping or just sitting on a plane, you may be exposing yourself to germs – such as flu viruses, E.Coli, and staph – that can make you sick.

“Anywhere people gather is filled with bacteria and viruses, and a crowded airport is a perfect example,” says Philip Tierno, Ph.D., Director of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at New York University Langone Medical Center. A wide variety of products are being introduced to the public for common infectious preventions and for sanitizing

purposes. We often see people grab their alcohol-filled sanitizing gels and rubbing their hands in hopes of killing bacteria and other dangerous germs. But are they? A number of studies in recent years have reported associations between exposure to such products and asthma and other adverse side effects. Dr. Thomas Gionis, President of the American Board of Law, Health and Medicine highly recommends the use of the MicroSafe AntiMicrobial hand and face sanitizing solution spray. “My children and I don’t leave home without it. What other product can you spray on your hands, face, and eating utensils and be assured that you won’t catch E.Coli or any other deadly virus?” he said.

This solution is FDA-approved and is absolutely chemical and alcohol-free, and deadly on almost all viruses, germs, and bacteria. The best part of this solution is its safety; it may be sprayed on just about anything, even the air space, to destroy bacteria and germs! Being aware of our public health is very vital for our survival. In the Business Insider of the USA, Bill Gates, the world’s wealthiest man has warned that we must combat and fight all diseases and viruses the way we prepare for war! Let’s try to begin with safe and effective prevention methods, using the innovations such as the Microsafe Solution to create safer and healthier environments for our children. H July/Aug 2018

What to Look for When Buying Sunglasses MANY OF US PURCHASE A PAIR OF SUNGLASSES BASED PURELY ON AESTHETIC APPEAL. BUT THE REALITY IS THAT SUNGLASSES ARE SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY. HERE ARE THREE KEY FACTORS TO LOOK FOR WHEN MAKING THE INVESTMENT. July/Aug 2018

74

A good fit: Be sure that your sunglasses fit very well otherwise you may be less likely to wear them. Also, when sunglasses are too large or small, they may let in light from the sides.

The right lenses: These days, your best option for lenses is polycarbonate plastic lenses. These lenses are stronger and also provide adequate UV protection. Photochromic lenses are also an ideal choice as they block UV radiation while maintaining visual clarity.

The numbers: When shopping for sunglasses, check the label and be sure to purchase the one that specifies the lenses block out 99 percent to 100 percent of UV radiation and also block out both UVA and UVB rays. H (Credit: www.medbroadcast.com)

COOLING FOODS YOU SHOULD BE EATING THIS SUMMER To avoid feeling uncomfortable during the summer heat, include foods that naturally cool the body. Read on to learn more.

July/Aug 2018

80

Cooling Foods It is possible to reduce the effects of heat by eating “cooling foods” such as juicy fruits which include watermelon, cucumbers, apples, and leafy greens. Avoid or reduce items such as spicy or “heavy” foods which can prevent body temperature from rising in the first place.

Cooling Herbs High Water Content Many fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and cucumbers are rich in water content, which help in increasing essential fluid intake to cool off the body. Other helpful foods with high water content include melons, apricots, grapes, pineapples, peaches, apples, zucchini, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, and leafy greens.

In hot desert climates, locals tend to drink a lot of mint and green tea. Try using chamomile, rosemary, parsley, and ginger, all of which aid in cooling the body down. You can also use these herbs in drinks along with coconut water and buttermilk, as both are natural cooling agents. H

THE ULTIMATE SEAFOOD INDULGENCE AT CRAZY FISH DUBAI Open since February 2018 in DIFC, Monte Carlo-born Crazy Fish Dubai is one of the only restaurants here that serves some of the freshest, wildly caught seafood from the Mediterranean Sea in a fine dining setting. July/Aug 2018

Brought here by Flavio Briatore and headed by executive chef Franco Blois, this seafood haven offers a market-style ice display for fresh fish and an aquarium for lobsters. subtle flavors of avocado, while the Red King Prawns Carpaccio with Pink Himalayan Salt was a juxtaposition of creamy and muted salty flavors.

Next, we enjoyed a platter of crispy Frito Mistosquid, baby shrimp, and sea bream- garnished over with lemon and tartar sauce. Also the Red Prawns and Aubergine Rolls with Red Endive and Parmesan hit all the right notes. From the platter of baby shrimps, lobster, and prawns served with shavings of blackened eggplant, the seafood was incredibly tender and loaded with flavor.

Our main course was Gnocchetti with Red King Prawns, Cherry Tomatoes, and Pecorino Cheese. It was a soothing and comforting dish that was a delicious way to end this superb meal. But a grand finale is always dessert and we had Fruitcini which was fruit and nuts on ice, each one encased with sorbet. It was an extremely innovative way to serve fruit as a dessert. Lastly, the deconstructed Mille Feuille put together at the table was a dreamy concoction of pastry with vanilla cream and fruit. The Verdict: Seafood is the star of the menu and cooked simply, the flavors retained the integrity of the seafood. This is a must-visit for the freshest and highest quality seafood in Dubai. Location: Al Fattan Currency House DIFC – Dubai

We began with Pecorino cheese and a tuna amuse bouche. From the raw starters, we had the apple wood smoked Tuna Tartare with Crushed Potatoes drizzled over with lemon which was a multi-sensory treat. Space

Creating the perfect home spa experience is something that Carla Conte, founder and creative director at Brand Creative— which revamps and conceptualizes the interiors for spas across the GCC — understands well. She reveals how to create that home spa experience.

The Need “With our busy lifestyles and constant connectivity to the online world, I think it’s imperative that every person have a space at home that is an escape. What’s important is that there is privacy so that you are left with your thoughts.”

86

Key Elements Checklist If you are renting your space or unable to renovate, then there are definitely key tricks you can use to create a pampering space, as follows: • Dimmable lighting is key, but if you can’t dim the lighting controls, then switch your bulbs to warm lighting and a lower wattage. • Candles immediately romanticize any space. Go for battery operated LED candles of various heights and widths and surround your bathtub/shower/ bookshelves with them. • Aromatherapy oils and scents immediately help transport the mind to a quieter place. • Combine that with soft music, meditative sounds, or soft tunes from nature to ensure an immersive environment. • It’s important to select artwork or wall décor that is interesting to help fixate the mind on something other than work. • Cushions, blankets, soft floor mats, and stools help make the space more usable while appealing to your tactile sense. • Bring in nature as plants that promote additional oxygen (like spider plants, ficus, ferns, bamboo, and aloe) will give your space that added touch of color and texture. TEENAGER WITH CHEST PAIN

Question: Sometimes my teenage daughter gets a sharp pain in her chest which the doctor diagnosed as growing pains. Is this related to the heart? Dr. Mohamed Shehata, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist responds, “Chest pain in teenagers can be related to many etiologies. Fortunately, more than 90 percent of these pains are not related to heart problems. For example, these pains might be related to indigestion or respiratory problems. Heart problems associated with chest pain in teenagers mostly include inflammation of the pericardial sac surrounding the heart or the presence of valvular malfunction. However, the term `growing pains` described in teenagers is mostly caused by costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the joints between the breast bone (sternum) and the ribs. In younger children, this costochondral area is soft or cartilaginous. With puberty and growth, this soft area calcifies, making it harder and for some reason, this area may become irritated (or inflamed), resulting in pain and tenderness. So, this type of chest pain is basically not related to the heart and can be simply relieved using traditional analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications.

CHOCOLATE & MIGRAINES

Question: Whenever I eat chocolate or have coffee, a few moments later I suffer from a migraine. Is there a link between food and a migraine? Dr. M. Srinivas Mallya, Specialist Neurology and HOD of Neurology responds, “Yes, there is a link between migraine and food as a trigger. About 30 percent of patients' report a food trigger. Apart from chocolate and coffee, other common food triggers include citrus fruits, nuts, onions, MSG, nitrites found in cured or processed meats, and dairy products.”

ANTI-AGING

Question: I just turned 35 and my wrinkles are becoming prominent. I am not necessarily in favor of Botox yet; what are other options? Dr. Sanjay Parashar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon explains, “It’s the process of aging. Based on your genetics, lifestyle, diet, and skin regime, the signs of aging can appear as early as age 30 for some. Wrinkles are caused by the overuse of facial muscles (the 11 lines on your forehead and between your eyes), due to excessive frowning, or long horizontal lines on the forehead due to stress. Skin dehydration and excessive sun exposure are also contributing factors to wrinkles. I understand you are not in favor of Botox, but it is definitely one of the best solutions for wrinkles. It is helpful in relaxing the overused muscles and hence, stops the formation of wrinkles.” “I understand that Botulinum injections have had myths including a frozen look or unnatural facial expressions. But that is due to its excessive use, particularly by inexperienced experts. New techniques of treatment include –‘Baby Botox’ (also known as Micro Botox) which is a new way of treating the wrinkles subtly and with natural facial expressions. Alternative methods include facial yoga to help break the habit of muscle overuse. Other simple measures include the use of a proper moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and at the same time, repairs damaged skin. Vitamin C serum works as an antioxidant for skin cells and repairs wrinkles. Other ways of reducing wrinkles include medical peelings and laser therapies. Some also benefit with treatments such as PRP for the face, medical facials such as Vivace, and also hyaluronic fillers. Early management of aging is extremely important. Times are changing and medical science has provided many tools and technology, which when used properly, can slow down aging. Adapting to them early helps substantially and delays the hard measures used to fight aging, for example, with a facelift. Find a good doctor as he can examine the real cause of your wrinkles and advise appropriately.”

TEMPERATURE CONTROL DEVICE TO HELP SAVE LIVES ACROSS THE BOARD discomfort they may be experiencing.” For this reason, nurses and caretakers must measure their temperature routinely. Moreover, many children and infants often experience an elevation in their body temperature, which can prove extremely dangerous. Four students in mechanical engineering and science majors took up to five months to develop the system. “They just modeled it,” Dr. Abu Qudeiri said. “In terms of a product, we did our job as researchers, but now someone else in the industry can develop it and produce it in two months’ time.” A new device to track people’s temperature was developed by researchers at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). Tempo will be able to help nurses and caretakers measure patients’ temperature by reducing their rounds of routine-checking. Through an alarm system, the device will also signal whenever the patient’s temperature is below or above the safe level. “Our motivation for this innovation was a

combination of serious issues related to sensing the temperature of the human body,” said Dr. Jaber Abu Qudeiri, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the university’s Engineering College. “There are large numbers of patients, special needs children, adults and elderlies in hospitals and centers who need to be attended to and taken care of on a regular basis. Some may be unconscious, and others may not be able to talk or communicate the

He advised his students to work in two parallel lines – firstly, to apply it as a patent and secondly, to search for a company to develop the device. “We are also going to develop our design using a sensor, mainly to be used in hospitals, where elderly people can keep recording their temperatures and send them directly to nurses. Doctors can make a print-out after a few days to have a history of the temperature for a week or a day, which is another plan for usage,” he said.

DHA HOSPITALS BECOME FIRST IN THE EMIRATE TO USE CLIP TECHNOLOGY BY ANGIOGRAPHY FOR VALVE REPAIR OF HEART PATIENTS the heart. This causes shortness of breath, fatigue, and if left untreated can ultimately lead to heart failure and death. Most people affected are elderly as MR incidence increases with age.

The Dubai Heart team consisting of cardiologists from Dubai and Rashid Hospital conducted the first MitraClip Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair by angiography in Dubai for an 81-year-old elderly patient with a leaky mitral valve. The MitraClip device is used for treatment of people with mitral regurgitation (MR), a serious, progressive heart disease in which the mitral valve does not close properly, allowing blood to flow backward into

Dr. Fahd Baslaib, Head of Cardiology and CEO of Rashid Hospital, said, “Very few cardiology centers in the world perform this technology. Prior to this, the standard method was an open-heart surgery to either repair or replace the valve. However, in elderly patients or in patients with several comorbidities, the open-heart procedure is not recommended and medications only mask symptoms, instead of treating the underlying issue. Therefore, the introduction of the minimally invasive MitraClip procedure is a breakthrough especially for patients' who cannot undergo the mitral valve surgery. This procedure will help more

people who previously had limited options and provide a safer method and quicker recovery period.” The first procedure in Dubai was performed recently on an 81-year-old Emirati patient with comorbidities such as hypertension. Dr. Baslaib said, “The patient was complaining of shortness of breath with minimum exertion, upon investigation we identified that he had mitral regurgitation (MR) and was the right candidate for this procedure as surgery would be too invasive for this patient.” He added, “This procedure helps the patient return to better health in a shorter period of time. By using advanced technologies and therapies, our aim is to provide patients with the best possible minimally invasive treatment.”
