STUDENT HEALTH
1
ABOUT THE FOUNDERS usband and wife team, James and Victoria Evans, started Student Health Guide following a conversation with close friend and GP, Dr Will Swallow, who questioned why teen health was usually delivered in silos rather than holistically. Dr Will gave the example of individual leaflets about specific health topics in his surgery and suggested that because most health issues are interlinked, it would be better to have a magazine aimed at teenagers, which covered the whole spectrum of health and

wellbeing. And so Student Health Guide was born. James has a background in media and publishes two million young driver road safety magazines each year, which are handed to every new driver by the examiner when taking the driving test. Victoria qualified as a Lawyer in 2016 and spent some time with a city firm, before leaving to work full-time developing SHG. With a newborn son, James and Victoria have considerably less free time than they used to, but both enjoy sports, travel and watching movies.

NOTE FROM DR WILL I work in one of the most deprived areas of the UK and many young people coming through my surgery have complex needs. The vast majority of teenagers I see who present minor health issues, have an underlying cause or contributory factor. For example, the effects of exam stress can be hard for young people to cope with, but treatment with better sleep, improved diet and physical exercise may be as effective as prescribing medication. Most health issues are interlinked, which is why I believe it’s so important to provide holistic information
and advice about health and wellbeing. I’m really happy to be a founder and advisor to SHG. Seeing the positive effects it has on the lives of our readers is very humbling and I believe it to be an invaluable resource for anyone responsible for the welfare and success of young people. Educational institutions are perfectly placed to reach every student indiscriminately and with research showing the positive effects on resilience, mood and academic performance, it’s one of the best investments a school, college or university can make.

TEEN HEALTH GUIDE THG is a 64-page magazine, available in print and digital formats. We have teamed up with NSPCC, UK Active and Brook to promote the very best self-care advice. THG aims to advise, inform and drive long-term behaviour change in its readership, building resilience and encouraging teenagers to take control of their health and wellbeing.
STUDENT HEALTH GUIDE SHG (sixth form & colleges edition) is an 84-page magazine, available in print and digital formats. It is designed to educate 16-18-year olds about all aspects of health and wellbeing and is framed within the context of their future transition to ‘independent living’, whether that is university, work, an apprenticeship or a gap year. 8

BENEFITS These magazines are designed to be handed to students (ideally, one copy each) so that they can take them away and read about topics like mental and sexual health, in private and at their own leisure. Research shows almost 75% of readers retain their magazine to refer back to later. Here are five of the key benefits to this approach:
1
Ensures every student receives the same standard of health and wellbeing guidance, regardless of their personal circumstances or willingness to seek-out information.
2
Builds resilience, promotes self-help and encourages young people develop coping
strategies as well as offering advice on when to seek professional help.
3
When a magazines enters the home and ends up on the coffee table, it has the ability to drive behaviour change in the wider family.
4
Demonstrates to students, parents, teachers and external stakeholders that you are serious about the health and wellbeing of your students.
5
Enable students to make ‘informed choices about health eating, fitness and their emotional and mental wellbeing’ as required by Ofsted when awarding Outstanding Schools.

SHG DIGITAL Whilst we believe that printed magazines are important tools when engaging with students, there’s no denying that digital resources are highly accessible and when used proactively, can be a valuable tool in prompting students to consider their lifestyle choices. There is already a wealth
of great information online, however there is also a lot of dangerous material, which makes signposting students online for further information a bit of a minefield. This is why we produce digital versions of all our print titles and have recently launched the SHG Digital Library.
DIGITAL LIBRARY The SHG Digital Library was created to provide schools, colleges and universities with high-quality digital content for use on their websites, intranet, social media, Moodle and in lesson planning/delivery. Rather than SHG having its own student-facing profile, we instead produce content to help you engage with your students about their health and wellbeing. The library is updated each month and includes content from all our key sections - Mind, Body, Fuel, Fitness, Sex and Life. This content is in different formats, such as posters, infographics, videos, polls, quizzes, social media sliders etc. The cost for this subscription is just ÂŁ300 per year and gives you access to 20 great pieces of original content each month. 10

DIGITAL MAGAZINES All our print magazines are available as digital page turners. These can be linked to or embedded on websites or social media and offer great accessibility. Digital magazine packages start from ÂŁ200 per title, which includes a co-branded front cover. Periodically, we can provide anonymised statistics on readership of your bespoke magazine, including views, dwell time and links clicked.
