The Rimbey Elementary Parent Council chili cook off was a hot success with an overwhelming amount of support.

Local businesses, charities and feature restaurants came out to support the event and showcase their talents. From traditional Mexican chili made by the staff at the Canalta Hotel , to a unique chocolate, habanero chili from Cilantro & Chive, to long time homestead recipes that made for some spicy competition.

From Oct. 5 to Oct. 12, Rimbey RCMP officers responded to 36 calls for service.

On the roadways officers responded to six traffic violations, two traffic collisions and two traffic collisions involving animals.

In criminal-code matters, officers responded to one fraud, one theft, five mischief calls, one call of disturbing the peace, one break-and-enter and one stolen property crime.

For general policing matters not falling under traffic or criminal code, officers handled two well

Central Alberta Raceways wraps up another successful season

Central Alberta Raceways (CAR) has wrapped up another successful season.

“It was a very good season. The weather was great. We had good car counts, I think better than the last couple of years, so that was good to see people coming out again,” said Roy Keessar, president of CAR. Some of the highlights this year were a jet car they had come out to put on a show, the street car shootout and the Miles of Mayhem that came through Rimbey again this year.

“The Miles of Mayhem had well over 125 registered vehicles for that. It was a great success as well.”

Keessar said the races are very family-oriented, with lots of junior dragsters coming out where they bring their whole families with the kids driving the junior dragsters.

“The numbers have been fantastic this year for the junior dragsters, and we’ve got to cater to them because that’s the future of our drag racing,” said Keessar.

Johnny Bleys, head executive of the drag, said

it was a successful year with the number of races they had, with all of the races going off pretty smoothly.

“We averaged about 65 cars, which is pretty good for us. We’d like to see 80 plus cars a race, but considering the tough economic times, we felt that 65 was a pretty good number,” he said.

Bleys said they’ve got some exciting things happening for next year.

“We may not have as many races, but the races we have are going to be bigger and better, so we’re looking forward to an equally or better successful year next year,” he said.

Alaina Darling, deputy director of the mud bogs, said their season went really well.

“We were really happy with the amount of competitors and the amount of spectators. We did a few new things this summer so it kind of refreshed the mud bogs a little bit and brought some new people to it, so it actually turned out very well this summer,” said Darling.

She said a memorable part of the summer was getting the trucks on the motocross and opening up that venue to new and different things to be able to do at the race track.

Darling said next year they plan to do a huge

revamp of the whole mud bog facility and will try to make it more of an active park for everyone to use.

“We’re revamping the motocross as well as trying to put in permanent bathrooms and camping and stuff for spectators, so to make it more of a family weekend type event to get more people to come there.”

Overall, the fan base was good this year at CAR, but Keessar said they could use more people coming out to watch.

He added that this year they had lots of events and might cut back a bit next year as it was very busy at the whole facility, and that their volunteer group was getting tired toward the end of the year.

“As usual it’s hard to get people out to come and help.”

Keessar said they are always looking for more volunteers.

“What happens a lot is we get people volunteering and they fall in love with the sport, they buy a race car and come racing,” he said with a laugh.

“We’re gaining racers but we’re losing volunteers. It’s kind of a hard balance there, but that can be expected. It’s a very enjoyable sport and it can be very cost-efficient.”

I can finally say we are almost done with our outside house renovation. I feel like we are racing against the clock as that colder weather is going to hit any day now. Luckily, it’s been such a beautiful fall this year!

When you have kids, everything is a bit more tricky when it comes to trying to get stuff done, especially siding, windows and doors. I feel lucky as my husband knows how to install all of the siding, while his brother knows how to do window and door installations. Talk about saving money! It’s been great to have the help and get our home looking better than ever, as that old stuff on it was getting pretty worn out.

Once the outside is done, there’s no stopping there. We’ve got one bathroom inside to redo and then it will be smooth sailing. I find that it really takes that much more planning to do renovations

Government of Alberta moving more money toward seniors

The province announced on Oct. 11 that it is opening its wallet a little wider in an effort to assist seniors in Alberta.

Alberta will provide $2.1 million towards expanded home support services for seniors across the province in partnership with Healthy Aging Alberta.

“Seniors across our province deserve to live vibrant lives as they age. This funding is critical to ensure that seniors have the support they need to live independently in their homes and communities,” said Jason Nixon, Alberta’s minister of seniors, community and social services.

Fifteen community organizations around Alberta have received funding through six initial grants awarded in July 2022 for current projects and nine more awarded in June 2023.

Services the funding can be used for vary; services such as social and emotional support, housekeeping, yard keeping, snow removal, medical appointment transportation, and meal delivery can all be included in the program.

“Communities rely on older adults, and older adults rely on their communities,” said Karen McDonald, provincial director of Healthy Aging Alberta and executive director of Sage Seniors Association.

“The Government of Alberta’s commendable commitment to supporting both the well-being of seniors and the community-based senior-serving organizations reflects this shared understanding. Healthy Aging Alberta acknowledges the shared vision between seniors, community-based senior-serving organizations, the United Way of Calgary, and the Government of Alberta: to continue our work to make Alberta one of the best places in the world to grow older.”

Projects approved in the 2022 intake included Bashaw and District Support Services Association with a grant of $150,000.

Other grants awarded as part of the funding in 2022 and 2023 included projects in Medicine Hat, Cold Lake, Calgary, Grande Prairie and Westlock.

Rimbey Curling Club ready for season

It’s just about time for curling season to start up again.

Curlers will start to hit the ice at the Rimbey Curling Club Oct. 30 with the men’s league.

The curling season takes place until March.

The club has been around for a long time and has seen quite the change over the years.

Cathy Pfau, president of the Rimbey Curling Club, has been part of the curling club for over 30 years and has seen it change in terms of the number of people participating in curling in various leagues, which, she said, has fluctuated.

“It’s interesting how the league numbers change as people go through their family life,” said Pfau.

There are currently around 120 members, and the club is all volunteer-run, with a nine-member board. They do all of the maintenance and other tasks in the building.

Looking back over the years, Pfau said a memorable moment for her has been the ladies bonspiels.

“The Rimbey Ladies Bonspiels are always a hoot. There’s lots of participation, lots of fun games, lots of costumes and fun themes.”

They used to take place around St. Patrick’s Day, but the date has changed to a different month, which is still to be determined.

Every year they have a men’s and ladies’ event, and used to have a mixed one, but now they call it an open seniors bonspiel.

“Our senior league is fairly strong,” said Pfau, adding that many of the members curl in more than one league.

They also have a junior league and try and work with both Bluffton and Rimbey schools to bring in students to curl as part of their phys-ed programs.

This year Pfau said the club will be starting up a Sturling Curling League.

“It’s a quicker game, a two-people-per-team game.”

This year they will also be offering a six-week get-acquainted package with the Sturling Curling League on Thursdays.

Those interested in that will receive more in-

formation at the registration night on Oct. 19, which is open to all curlers and those interested

in curling. That will take place at 8 p.m. at the Rimbey Curling Club.

Bluffton Veterinary Services celebrates expansion with open house

The Bluffton Veterinary Services held the grand opening of its new expansion on Oct. 5.

The expansion began in January and was just completed a couple of weeks ago.

“The expansion basically doubled the size of the building,” said Jasmine Duff, owner of the clinic.

Three new exam rooms were added, a new reception area with a prescription pick-up desk and a double reception desk for getting people in and out, along with bills paid faster than they used to be.

“We also have a number of new offices, as we were expanding, but our vets were stuck with multiple vets to each office, so it’s just a lot bigger,” she said.

Their old reception area was turned into a new surgical area and new kennel room with large dog runs, which they didn’t have before.

“It will help us with those large farm dogs coming in.”

Duff said she wanted to recognize Pieter Broere, the owner of the building, who really spearheaded the expansion.

“He’s been absolutely amazing in the whole process,” said Duff.

One of the big reasons for the expansion is that they only had two small animal exam rooms, so they could only see two patients at a time. Now they have

five exam rooms to run through more small animal appointments, so people aren’t having to wait multiple days to get in, as they have the staff to do it.

“Now we’ll also have two surgery rooms if we’re fully booked for small animal spays and neuters, but if we have a c-section come in or something else that needs to be done, we can get them in with another vet immediately now, which will help us as well.”

Strong turnout for Central Alberta Foodgrains Growing Project

It was a picture-perfect day to bring in the harvest for the Central Alberta Foodgrains Growing Project.

Nine combines tackled the fields just outside of Bentley on Oct. 7, and about 100 people turned out to enjoy pizza and visit awhile.

“Every year we have a harvest,” said Marg Hoogland, a member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank board.

“Local farmers plant it, take care of the whole field, and then harvest it.

“We then sell the crop, and all of the proceeds from that go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank,” she explained. Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a partnership of 15 church and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger.

Also, an ongoing agreement with the federal government sees the proceeds matched by up to four to one, depending on the project, she added.

“We are in our 29th year here,” said Hoogland.

The organization works to bring relief where

there are global emergencies with hunger, but they also are involved in long-term development projects in impoverished nations as well.

According to the CFB website, it’s estimated that up to 783 million people are facing hunger worldwide and do not have food security, meaning they do not have regular access to enough nutritious food to live healthy and active lives.

(Visit your local newspaper website, obituary page) In loving memory of Raymond Albert Tschabold 1933 – 2023 It is with great sadness and greater love that the family of Raymond Albert Tschabold announces his passing at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on October 9, 2023, at the age of 90. Raymond was born at Eatonia, Saskatchewan to Walter Tschabold and Elva Irene Herring on March 12, 1933.

The early years of Raymond’s life saw his family move numerous times due to the hard times created by the depression.

After leaving the Mantario, Saskatchewan area they were in Cold Lake, Sylvan Lake, and Bentley before settling on their own farm in 1937 northeast of Rimbey. At an early age, Raymond learned to trap from his father and could be found fishing in the nearby Blindman River, which led to a lifelong passion. Raymond acquired his first rifle at the age of 16 and with the help of a good neighbour, Homer Betts, learned to hunt, which led to another lifelong passion.

Raymond received most of his schooling at Monte Vista School.

Raymond met Alice Robinson at a Halloween costume dance in 1951 and they were married on November 11, 1953, at the Rimbey United Church. In 2022 they celebrated their 69th anniversary. They bought their farm northeast of Rimbey in 1954 and started their farming life. The existing log house and lean-to addition were home until a new house was built in 1960.

Son Frank was born in 1955 and his daughter Yvonne in 1958. Initially, there was a variety of livestock on the farm, but sheep became the main farm income. Lambing season and shearing time were busy times. To supplement the farm income Raymond started doing janitor work in town in 1971 and cleaned many different stores and businesses over the years until he and Alice retired in 1993.

Besides all the hard work there was always time made for fishing, summer or winter, hunting, camping, curling, travelling, card games, dances, reunions, parties, celebrations, and playing the guitar. In addition to entertaining at home or with family and friends, Raymond could often be seen with his cowboy hat and boots and guitar volunteering with a pickup

band for events in town. Raymond was devoted to his family and helped out in so many ways over the years, first with his kids, and then with his grandkids.

He loved the time spent entertaining and teasing first the grandkids, and then the great grandkids.

Once moving to town, volunteering replaced the paid work. Raymond spent many hours volunteering his time, particularly at the hospital, the food bank, and the United Church.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Raymond will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by son Frank (Wilma); daughter Yvonne (Carl); granddaughters Ileana (Alan), Camille (Austin), Dancey (Paddy), and Nikki (Jason); grandson Jason (Megan); many great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy; sisters-in-law Donna and Issie, extended family, and dear friends. Also survived by Alicia.

Raymond was predeceased by his wife Alice, his parents Walter and Elva, his brother Lawrence, and his grandson Jay. A Celebration of Raymond’s Life will be held at Rimbey United Church on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Marco Williams-Ste-Marie officiating. Interment of ashes to immediately follow the service at West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ellis for her excellent care of Raymond and to thank the staff at both Valley View Manor and Rimbey Long Term who cared for Raymond.

Roland was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Muriel and Lucien Pilote. Roland is survived by his Wife, Sandra Gail Pilote; Sister, Jacqueline (Paul) Pilote; Brother, John (Iris) Pilote; Daughters, Elizabeth Doherty, Wendy (John) Pilote and Michelle Pilote, and his Son, Nicholas (Kari) Pilote. He had 11 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.

Cilantro and Chive has wrapped up its fund distribution for its September Burger of the Month.

The guest chef for September in Lacombe was Lacombe Police School Resource Officer Constable Michelle Grovet. She helped create Michelle’s Pack-a-Lunch burger, which included roasted pulled chicken coated in maple BBQ sauce on a garlic brioche bun, with honey Dijon mustard pickle slices, topped with house made slaw, sharp cheddar, and fresh peach slices.

Two dollars from every burger sold went to Grovet’s cause of choice, The Broom Tree Foundation and their new ‘Pay it Forward’ School Lunch Initiative.

Constable Grovet is in Lacombe schools each day and sees lots of students who don’t have lunches, and wanted to help.

“If you don’t have food, you can’t perform well in school, so this is one way we can help,” she said.

The Broom Tree Foundation will be using the Burger of the Month proceeds to introduce a food security pilot program at Ecole Lacombe Junior High and Ecole Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School. The program will allow for the opportunity to pay it forward and donate a nutritious lunch to be delivered to a local school to help set up a student for success.

Constable Grovet helped deliver $952 to The Broom Tree Foundation on Oct. 3 thanks to the support of the Burger of the Month Program.

Because of the incredible support from

the community and guests for the Burger of the Month program, over $145,000 has been given to local charities over the past 80 months.

The October Burger of the Month at the Lacombe location is Stuart’s “Photo Ready” burger, created in collaboration with local Guest Chef Stuart Reece. It includes two crispy chicken thighs, pepper

bacon, cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, house-made avocado and lime crema and fresh cilantro on a garlic buttered brioche bun. Two dollars from every burger sold goes directly to Stuart’s cause of choice, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lacombe and District.

Parkview Adventist Academy in Lacombe took part in helping with the S’more Ice Cream Sandwich that landed on the Lacombe Cilantro and Chive menu throughout the summer. Proceeds supporting their efforts went to help an orphanage in Kenya through a partnership with A Better World Canada.

Cilantro and Chive’s School Ice Cream Sandwich Program sees their culinary teams at both of their locations come up with an epic ice cream sandwich every three months. They then select a local school to benefit from ice cream sandwich sales, kicking back one dollar of every sandwich they sell in house to a program or project of the school’s choice.

The Cilantro and Chive team worked alongside students at the school in June for an on-site ice cream sandwich sale. A group of student leaders held each other to the task and they served up over 200 ice cream treats, raising some additional funds for the school.

A cheque of $1,002 was handed over on Sept. 13 to Parkview Adventist Academy, which included $880 raised from the on-site sale.

Proceeds will be going to support an orphanage in Kenya called the Kadesh Barna Children’s Home, and used to fix the flood damage and set up proper drainage to redirect the water flow and keep the home and its children dry.

Since launching the Ice Cream Sandwich Program in 2019, Cilantro and Chive has been able to give back more than $18,000 to local schools all thanks to school partnerships and the support of customers.

The current Ice Cream Sandwich at the Lacombe location is the “Pumpkin Pie”. It includes pumpkin pie ice cream, sandwiched between two soft ginger snap cookies, topped with a drizzle of caramel sauce, dusting of graham crackers and their house made whipped cream. One dollar from every ice cream sandwich sold will go directly to Mecca Glen School and their plans to bring Science in Motion to the School.

Alberta Prairie Steam Train tours a unique experience

From purchasing tickets to disembarking when the train returns to Stettler, the Alberta Prairie Steam Train experience is as enjoyable as it is unique.

Each excursion has a train car attendant in each of the antique cars; attendants can answer all your questions about the trip and have plenty of knowledge of the train itself. There is also a concession worker in the bar and souvenir car. Here you can purchase beverages, as well as pins and other souvenirs.

A second concession worker is located in the Lone Star Saloon car; each excursion also has a trainman and conductor who oversees operations and makes sure everything is running smoothly. If the diesel locomotive is being used, the train engineer is behind the controls. For the steam train excursion, there is a fireman working alongside the engineer. Both are trained and fully certified in steam locomotive operations.

Those who venture into the Lone Star Saloon bar car near the front of the train are able to enjoy live music on Big Valley excursions. They can also examine the photos of some of

the celebrities that have performed on the car or been involved with the train.

Photos of the country group Farmer’s Daughter share space with cast photos from the Legends of the Fall, which filmed in central and southern Alberta, and local celebrity Laura Anderson, who performed many times in the early years of the steam train.

On either leg of the trip, passengers are welcome to move about the train, which has both pre and post-war passenger cars. They can also enjoy the open-air viewing car in the middle of the train and enjoy the scenery along the way.

Although all staff members with Alberta Prairie are on the payroll, passengers are often greeted by volunteers of the Big Valley Historical Society

who dress in period costumes at the 1912 CN station. The volunteers also operate the people mover that is supplied by Alberta Prairie and can take passengers to the Big Valley community hall where they will enjoy a meal prepared by a local caterer.

After the meal, guests are invited to explore the many attractions in the small community before boarding the train for the return trip.

For excursions to the Country Hideaway, guests have approximately two hours to enjoy the different meal options provided on different excursions as well as stroll the grounds where they can play simple carnival-style games or listen to live music.

Staff member Sarah Bourdon says that “it’s a great opportunity for parents to relax while their kids can run around and play within the fenced grounds.

Kids can even ride the Alberta Prairie Barrel Train and take part in rubber duck races.”

In many of the cars, the seats are designed to be switched so that passengers are facing forward, regardless of the train’s direction of travel. It is often during the return portion of the excursion that long-time staff member Bob Willis entertains the passengers via the PA system. Willis’ stories explain the history of the railway, and

why the tracks are as wide as they are.

He also explains the legally required train whistle pattern whenever a train approaches a crossing, and its ties to Queen Victoria.

Behind the scenes While guests are enjoying the amenities of their destination, the locomotive crews prepare for the return trip. This often only takes a few minutes and crews can eat and relax before carrying on back to Stettler.

When the #41 steam locomotive is used, the engineer inspects the locomotive, topping up the oil pots that keep the moving parts lubricated.

Crews also refill the water tank. On average the steam train will use 2,800 gallons one way. Although the water is refilled from the town system, there is a water filtration unit and two water softening units on the refill lines to ensure the well-being of the 103-yearold locomotive.

The locomotive and tank car are then disconnected from the train and pulled ahead several yards to a switchpoint.

It then backs onto the next track and moves to another switch point at the other end of the train. The locomotive is then connected to the back of the train and will travel in reverse back to Stettler. At this point, the fire onboard is extinguished. The fireman and en-

gineer must return to the locomotive at least a half hour before departure to reignite the fire and get the engine ready to travel.

Since the Country Hideaway is located near the warden switching yards operated by the Alberta Prairie and the ECAHS, a similar process is often done for the return trip.
