C

hristmas means many things to many people: it’s a time to take a break, enjoy life, slow the pace, spend time with family and friends and to be thankful for what we have, and celebrate the goodness in each other and our community.

Some stand out highlights are mentioned throughout this newsletter and also our Annual Report. One in particular is the successful work of the Headstart Community Education Team, and their amazing job in the community, working with schools to contribute to prevention of brain injury. Whilst members on the team have changed over the years, the Headstart CET has been in existence now for well over 35 years. This year we were able to expand the work of the team with a generous bequest from the late Dave Cambridge and also secure some small funding for the Team to keep doing their valuable work and increase their impact from Orica and Ausgrid.

Enjoy reading about Kimberley, our amazing cover story, as she continues to paint prolifically and plans to travel abroad! A true “steel magnolia”, the flower she loves to paint, is the symbol of strength, beauty and vibrance, and as you will read Kim has overcome the obstacles of stroke and a very difficult past. As the New Year edges closer, Kim’s story may encourage you to set a goal to aim for in 2026.

Huge thanks to all involved with Headstart - consumers, family, CSW’s in the field, all our office based staff, carers, and many other rehab and health professionals who collectively make the difference in the lives of people living with a brain injury.

my thoughts continue to turn to the overwhelming devastation of the Bondi attack. We are still in disbelief that such atrocity and tragedy could and did happen here. The horror and grief will remain in the community for decades to come and forever in the lives of those who lost loved ones.

Even more now we need to look out for and look after each other. We need to have kindness and gratitude in each day as we connect with others.

Whatever your plans this Christmas season, I hope they bring you joy, peace, and health — Merry Christmas to you and your families.

ello everyone, I wish to thank all of you as I announce my retirement from the Board, with this years being my last AGM. This has been a hard decision but all things must change, and my decision is driven by the health changes of my husband Greg and daughter Tracey.

I leave the board in the capable hands of the remaining team, some who have been there through major changes. I wish them many meetings of excitement and satisfaction and

I know Headstart will continue to thrive and grow, always by putting our consumers and carers first in every decision. This is what makes Headstart the leader in acquired braininjury services.

“This past year has been marked by changes and challenges. NDIS continued the roller coaster of change but we remain resolute to deliver high-quality services even in the face of a complex operating environment. The Headstart story – where it all began...

T

he Headstart ABI Services commenced as a six week pilot programme in 1986 through the Hunter Rehabilitation Service (HRS) to meet the gap in community services for people after sustaining an acquired brain injury. It was then called the Headstart Community Access Programme.

Following formalised rehabilitation there was little long term support for people with an ABI to develop life skills and independence. The pilot was to establish a supportive network for those unable to return to former work roles and who were learning to deal with the complex after-effects of brain injury.

In 1987 the service developed greater autonomy from HRS. It was during this period that we developed a model of service delivery that focussed on providing long term support and creating opportunities for successful community involvement. Our aim was to develop a flexible model to meet changing individual needs within the mainstream community yet provide a sense or atmosphere of solidarity and the opportunity for people to meet and mix with others in similar situations.

Headstart was one of the first organisations in the region to deliver individual budgets, one to one supports,

and small group activities all derived from the old “block funding”.

Headstart values an approach that offers a variety of service options to suit each individual’s choice. The model of service delivery focuses on the process of the activity as well as the activity as an end in itself. It is this journey that highlights opportunities to develop confidence, abilities and life skills. This led to the development of the role of Care Coordinators and CSWs.

In 1991, the service was successful in securing 2 year project funding from the Motor Accidents Authority of NSW (MAA) which commenced in January 1992. This enabled further development of the model of community access, independence and community participation. The Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care then funded recurrently from 1 April 1994.

In 2008 the name of the service changed to Headstart Acquired Brain Injury Services to better reflect the people we support and in 2024 the organisation transitioned into a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG).

Headstart seeks to ensure that people with an acquired brain injury have access to individually tailored opportunities that foster successful long term community participation. The complex nature and combination of aftereffects of brain injury may pose barriers for people to resume a place in the community that is personally satisfying and reflects a sense of community and belonging.

Our team provide supports for over 200 people in the Hunter and the Central Coast regions. We work in a manner that finds solutions to challenges and towards a time when people may not need as much support due to their increasing independence. Our strategy of “make it happen” connects everyone in our organisation - consumers, families, and our staff, and connects us all to our purpose, and the impact we want to have long into the future in support of people with an ABI. Over the past four years she has formed a partnership with CSW Chris built on trust, motivation, and shared determination.

For Sharon, staying active has become central to rebuilding her strength and independence. “I just want to get better,” she says. “I want to get rid of the pain and keep moving forward.”

Exercise is a big part of Sharon’s routine, especially swimming and walking. “I love my exercise in the pool,” Sharon says. “When I’m in the water I can move better. Everything feels lighter.” Because of a brain surgery she had after a severe illness, her right side has been affected. “My right side is a bit weak, but I’m still going,” she says.

Sharon combines pool sessions with gym work, guided by Chris and her rehab trainer, Mike Broadbent. “Mike explains to us the best way to do things,” she says. “Chris comes in the pool with me too, because I forget some of the exercises. She’s always there helping.”

Cruising in a Corvette

Car enthusiast Tony collided with a horse in 2018 something he still can’t quite believe happened but he says “I’m thankful to still be walking and talking.” Along with the occasional road trip!

I

t's just so great just with the hood now, and my hair blowing - whatever hair there is! – heading to Catherine Hill Bay. My CSW Lynette mentioned that her partner's got a Chevy Corvette. I said, “I'd love to go for a drive in that”. She said, I'll organize it. And she did. So we just went for a cruise up to Catherine Hill Bay, with Lyn driving of course. I'm not allowed to drive. We just looked at the scenery and came back. Such a fantastic day! What a beautiful car. It’s his pride and joy. And it’s mint. The engine tight as and under the bonet was as clean as.

I love cars! The first car you ever had was an FJ panel van cooperation, I’ve had Cooper S’s, Falcons. The last car which I had that was my own pride and joy- and the one I had the accident in - was a 1990 318i BMW. It was absolutely beautiful to drive. It was a very spunky car, so good to hop in. It had the sunroof, the whole bit.

...and a Bathurst Bonus!

A

fter supporting Tony for 6 years I knew he always loved watching the V8 Supercars. I had been trying for a few years to be able to take Tony to Bathurst for a couple of laps of the track as Mt Panorama is a legendary track that Tony loved but had never been to. So with the amazing help of Care Coordinator Sam we got it done!

It was a little Birthday surprise for Tony. A friend at Newie Print Co made up a custom shirt for Tony’s big day.

I’ve had family that lived in Bathurst all my life and travel there every year for events so I had some knowledge to share on our trip.

Tony had a huge smile on his face from when he was given the shirt and knowing that he was finally getting to go to Bathurst.

In the time that I’ve worked with Tony this was the happiest and most excited I had ever seen him, closely followed by the first time he ate out in public with Lynne at “8 at Trinity”. We drove around the track a few times, visited the race museum, a stop on the top of the Mount and then some McDonald’s before heading home via Penrith and Krispy Kreme donuts!

n the last three months we saw the CET present over 15 locations covering 33 presentations.

Our team presented to more than 60 students at Mount View High School with our new “impairment goggles” a huge hit! Students got to experience just how challenging everyday tasks can be when impaired — from catching a ball to picking up a coin off the floor.

The session was part of an empathybased program run by local police for young people, helping them better understand the impact of brain injury, living with a disability and the importance of looking after themselves and others.

Finger on the Pulsar!

Another Mystery Box Rally adventure is about to hit the road less travelled.

Headstart co-worker Teri-Anne and I are thrilled to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally 2026! This rally will have us driving a car that is 25 years or older along outback roads. We set off from Charleville & return to Charleville 5 days later, each day in between is a mystery, we have no idea where we will be headed until just before departure the next morning. It’s not just about the drive—it’s about making a real difference in the fight against cancer.

Every participating team is required to raise a minimum of $4,000.

Every dollar raised goes directly to Cancer Council and helps fund vital cancer research, which is why we’re doing everything we can to hit our goal.

Your support, whether big or small, will have a real impact.

We both come from an industry that sees the after effects of cancer regularly and also have personal friends and family who have been affected by cancer. We are thrilled to do our part in raising funds and awareness for such a great cause and appreciate your support greatly! - Heather

“We will be bringing the rally car in on the 4th of February 2026 for the consumers or CSWs to paint! We’ll portion up panels for people to paint their own designs to make the car as colourful and creative as possible. We will be asking for a $10 donation that goes directly to the Rally Cancer Council donations, in return their very own square on the car to paint how they choose.”

Painting a new future: Kimberly’s stoke recovery story

I

love art. I love life. I want to live life to the fullest.

For Kimberly, those words are not just a motto — they’re a way of living that has been shaped by resilience, creativity and an extraordinary support network.

Since experiencing an ischaemic stroke in 2016, Kim has rebuilt her life in ways she never expected, discovering a deep love for the arts and a powerful role as a connector, encourager and advocate within her community.

Kim’s stroke occurred suddenly while she was on a family holiday in the Philippines.

“We were on holidays and I went to lie down,” Kim recalls. “Mum noticed my left arm and leg flicking, then my face was droopy. She knew straight away something was wrong.”

Kim’s mum Deb acted quickly. “We didn’t wait for an ambulance,” she says.

“We got Kim into a van and straight to hospital. It was terrifying.”

Doctors later confirmed Kim had suffered an ischaemic stroke. Too much time had passed for clot-reversal medication, and recovery would be

long and uncertain. After ten days of preparation, Kim returned to Australia first-class with a nurse and spent three months at Rankin Park Hospital.

At the time, Kim was already navigating significant life changes. “I was getting over a domestic violence relationship,” Kim explains. “I’d just started mentoring through the Hunter Women’s Centre and was doing a business course.”

Her dream business — Kimbo’s Slice of Heaven — was put on hold indefinitely.

“She’s honestly the best caramel slice maker in the world,” Deb laughs.

Kim even received a small business presentation certificate from MP Tim Crakanthorp while she was still in hospital. “But she’d lost the use of one side of her body, so that dream wasn’t realised at the time.”

What did emerge was something unexpected.

While in hospital, the Brainwaves Stroke Choir visited weekly. “She said, ‘I’m going to join that choir,’” Deb recalls. “She’d never been interested in singing before — ever.”

Kim did join, and she still attends every NewsLink Dec 2025 I Page 10

Saturday. “I love it,” Kim says. “Especially at Christmas with the carols and performances. It makes you feel part of something.”

Not long after, art entered Kim’s life — and stayed. A visit to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art proved pivotal.

“There was a Margaret Olley retrospective,” Deb says. “Kim could not pull herself away. She was completely absorbed.”

“That trip inspired me,” Kim explains.

“Margaret Olley is my inspiration. I’ve been to her home and gallery in Tweed Heads. She spent time in Newcastle too — that connection means a lot to me.”

Kim began art classes with Susan Porteus, initially in a group setting before moving to one-on-one sessions which she continues with today and absolutely loves. “What progress,” Deb says. “Susan sits beside her, suggests colours, shows her how to mix and apply paint. Watching that growth in Kim has been amazing.”

Kim paints mainly in acrylics on canvas, occasionally using watercolours.

One of her favourite subjects? “I love magnolias!” she says.

Kimberly paints with her least-dominant hand. “Kim’s a left-hander, so every stroke takes thought,” Deb explains.

“It’s painstaking work — but the results are beautiful.”

Each artwork typically takes around four sessions of two hours. One of Kim’s paintings is now being prepared for exhibition at John Hunter Hospital.

One of Kim’s regular support workers, Alison, has also played a vital role. “Kim is very proud of her achievements,” Ali says. “Art gives her a sense of confidence and accomplishment.” Ali supports Kim not just with painting—sometimes helping with the fine edging that’s difficult—but across a full and vibrant life. Together they cook, exercise, attend bingo, Coffee and Chat, hydrotherapy, theatre shows and concerts. Kim makes friends everywhere she goes.

Their days together are full. “We cook sometimes — and yes, the caramel slice is beautiful,” Ali laughs. “Mostly, we just have a really nice time together.”

“They’re very creative family — art, theatre, film,” Ali says.

“Kim is beautiful. She’s so proud of what she achieves, and that gives her confidence,” says Ali.

As Kimberly’s mum, Deb sees the impact clearly. “Some days, people with disabilities just need encouragement to get out of bed,” she says. “That encouragement can make or break a day.

Ali is fantastic with Kim. She’s smiling every time she gets up with Ali.” “And I love her,” Kim adds simply.

Creativity has played a vital role in Kimberly’s recovery — not just art, but music, theatre and dance. She attends disability dance groups, theatre performances, concerts and festivals.

“Nothing stops Kimberly from going,” Ali says. “We’ve been to Ability Fest, Shannon Noll, Guy Sebastian — she sees everybody.”

“I got Shannon Noll’s sweat towel!” Kim laughs. “And I’ve met Dylan Alcott twice.”

Kim is also deeply committed to supporting others on similar journeys.

witnessed Kim lifting others up simply by being herself.

“One man told her how her smile lights up a room,” Deb says. “Another man started crying. He was only two years post-stroke and really struggling. Kim gave him hope.”

“There’s a term now — post-traumatic growth,” Deb adds. “That’s Kimberly. She looks at life differently now, in a much more positive way.”

Kim encourages others to join stroke choir, aphasia groups and community programs. “She makes friends wherever we go,” Ali says. “She’s a connector.”

With Headstart’s support two days and three nights a week, Kim continues to thrive. “Headstart are a fantastic company,” Kim says. “I don’t know what I’d do without them.”

“She tells everyone,” Ali adds. “If someone’s unhappy, she says, ‘You should go to Headstart.’”

Kim’s also participated in Esteem at HMRI (Hunter Medical Research institute) - a 10 week program to help you improve with physical exercise, art and dance.

Deb, now involved in research with HMRI herself, reflects on how far they’ve both come. “I’m also doing a study with HMRI on heart health for female carers of stroke survivors, particularly aimed at women because they apparently we react differently to men.”

“I’m very proud of mum,” says Kim. Looking ahead, she has big plans. “One day I’d love a small studio — like a café space where I could show my work,” she says. “And I really want to travel to New Zealand.”

For now, she’s exactly where she wants to be — creating, connecting and living fully.

“Because life’s too short,” Kim says.

“You’ve got to live life to the fullest.”

Brainwaves Choir is run by former Headstart CSW Stef Tuyl. The choir rehearse on Saturdays of the school term from 11:30am-1:30pm at University House. It’s a choir made up of specifically stroke survivors (and is restricted to that rule for research purposes). If anyone would like to know more, feel free to contact the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music on 4921 8900 and ask for Stef.

Board member Melissa Mercer shares the personal journey that led her to our organisation, shaped by life’s unexpected twists and turns.

A personal path to impact

My partner’s journey:

had had his first stroke. Chris told the medical team that this event was his s a young man, my partner was first stroke. During the pandemic, in early November 2020, Chris was at his home on the Northern Beaches. He was standing in his bathroom when he went hot down the right side of his body, he did not ose consciousness and nor did he have a headache.

Post his Thalamic stroke in November 2020, Chris spent three weeks in hospital - while they searched for the cause. Following his hospitalisation, Chris returned to work for three weeks, followed by a one-month holiday commencing in December 2020 only to be locked down again by the NSW state government because he was living North of the Narrabeen Bridge.

During his time in hospital Chris undertook all the usual tests and following his MRI he was asked when he

another 4 weeks annual leave. By March 2023, Chris was so burnt out, he realised his stroke continued to impact his life greatly and took leave from work.

Because of the terms and conditions of his salary continuation insurance, Chris could not afford to wait out the 90-day waiting period until he could make a claim and so he worked on. During that time, fatigue, cognitive ability, memory, physical numbness in his right for arm, hand and feet was a constant, as was the accompanying brain “fog”. Chris had to take regular naps during the day just to function. To compensate for the loss of time Chris would often work late in to the evening to compensate.

Ultimately, Chris still struggles with long and short-term memory, he still has numbness in his right for arm and lower part of his right hand. Fatigue never leaves him, and his cognitive speed has been greatly impacted. Chris has challenges speaking with people he does not know; he is very aware it appears to other people he is mentally slow or unintelligent. It is noticeable to Chris that people keep their distance, anxiety and his ability to manage day to day interactions are greatly impacted.

Our journey:

his journey with Chris has been challenging, on us as a couple, we had only a relatively short time together prior to his second stroke or as we first thought, his first stroke, which in turn has impacted our day-to-day life in general.

We thought we could “just get on with it” and although the results in his life seem to be “atypical”

for stroke survivors, it has been clear from the outset, there are significant long terms effects as a result of his brain injuries, ultimately impacting our day-today life.

For myself, it has been challenging. As Executives everything was fast-paced and always on the go and there are definite moments where I need to apply my own mental “slow yourself down” to ensure Chris and I are moving together, rather than having an expectation that

he knows exactly where I am in the process (both mental and physical) and he hasn’t come with me in the process, and has just agreed due to his anxiety.

There are some amazing impacts of the stroke to our life, such as choosing to move to Lake Macquarie, embracing the “sea change” and the gentler pace of life. The other impacts are forever and challenging, but we are forever grateful that he is still here with us.

Lots of ideas at our Rec planning day in February!

ver the past year, Rec has continued to provide meaningful, accessible, and person-centred community engagement for consumers at Headstart. The year kicked off with a Rec Planning Day, which enabled all consumers present to put forth rec ideas for the year, of which we have completed 85% of all activities voted on throughout the year.

All activities included a strong mix of community outings and sensory-rich experiences such as animal engagement activities, swimming, bowling, gardening days, Ice skating and lovely walks in different environments. A big focus throughout the year was implementing Workshops, picking one activity that was focused on for 3-4 weeks to develop more meaningful skills and interest in the activity, that could then enable the consumer to transition this into mainstream community engagement.

The big workshops throughout the year were art, cooking, pickleball, gardening and choir/percussion. Along with a mixture of tours throughout the year such as Morpeth museum, NCIG, Newcastle Museum, Nelson Bay Lighthouse and many more!

Skill development was naturally embedded into Rec, focusing on gross and fine motor skills, skill building, communication, and confidence building.

Recreation days also played a vital role in strengthening consumer relationships and community.

Consumers consistently demonstrated how amazing our Headstart community is by encouraging one another, celebrating participation, and sharing Aleisha and Kynan enjoyable experiences with the group and within the community. Fur, feathers and fun!

F

or Rec I am always looking to do new and interesting activities and this one was no exception! We had Penny’s Pony’s and Pets animal petting zoo come to Headstart, with lovely friendly animals such as rabbits, goats, guinea pigs, sheep, chicken’s, and Lucy the miniature pony.

They set up camp under the cover, and everyone was able to pat and interact with all the animals throughout the day.

It was such a warm and calming animal interaction, the simple joy of patting and engaging with animals never gets old.

Everyone sat around the pen in a group and shared their own animal stories throughout.

Sue then decided to give everyone a laugh by taking Lucy the miniature pony inside the office for a wonder around, only to have her mistake the carpet as a toilet mat.

There wasn’t a person there who didn’t enjoy it, (including all the office staff who happily ditched their desks to spend the day with the animals!). Mary stated that it was her favourite Rec activity of all time and found the animals absolutely gorgeous, whilst Brenden said he really enjoyed the activity, and that it was something completely different which he liked.

Gary got some stunning shots of the baby goats, and one particularly good shot of all the care coordinators desperate to get out and play with the animals, while Martin gave all the animals a huge thumbs up!
