Tracy Municipal Airport The Tracy Municipal Airport includes a 24-hour Arrival/ Departure building (unattended) and has fuel available onsite. There is one paved runway and one turf runway. Ground transport is available (507-828-0147). The airport manager’s after-hours number is 507-828-0417. For questions, call 507-629-5545 or email sdaniels@tracymn.org. Things are happening at the Tracy Municipal Airport. The forthcoming Automated Weather Observation System is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2022. The system provides information to pilots on the current conditions at the airport. This system also reports to the National Weather Service for real time Weather updates to citizens. The runway rehab project involves filling in cracks in the runway with a mastic material to level out the surface for aircraft. This project will also include a slurry seal, which is an aviation-friendly sealcoat. Also, new asphalt was put down last summer leading up to the A/D building. The airport has eight T-shaped hangars for rent and one maintenance hangar for rent, which can be rented by contacting Tracy City Hall at (507) 629-5528. During the City’s Box Car Days celebration on Labor Day weekend, the City holds a Fly-In pancake breakfast at the airport. Aircraft and other forms of transportation are welcomed. There is plenty of parking and pancakes for all.

Tracy Development Corporation

TRACY COMMUNITY – 7

In the years since the formation of Tracy Development Corporation (TDC) a variety of activities have kept the organization’s volunteer board busy. The non-profit organization devotes its time to fostering new or expanding businesses, developing properties, enlarging the membership base, holding forums about improved broadband for the community and other informational meetings — all with the ultimate goal of adding more jobs and increasing the tax base, with enlarged economic activity within the Tracy community. In conjunction with other entities in the city, the TDC helped nurture an expanding pet treat company from New Hampshire, Chasing Our Tails, to re-locate in Tracy, together with other operations in southwest Minnesota. This enterprise has and will continue to refurbish facilities for its ambitious plans of expanding operations as it sells products nationally. Since forming TDC in October 2017, financial support, by a growing membership, has come from individuals and businesses in the Tracy area, while former residents generously contribute monetarily, too. Jim Keul, past-president of TDC, expressed gratitude by the board for the many contributors who have been a part of this short-term growth. He also acknowledged how vital and fortunate the TDC is for the teamwork within the City of Tracy by the council, EDA board and

others who recognize the importance of economic growth – as part of the TDC mission. Individuals or companies interested in business assistance or that would like to help TDC financially are encouraged to look up the the TDC website, www. tracydevelopment.org to become better acquainted with the organization or board members.

TRACY COMMUNITY – 11

Tracy Area Chamber The Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce focuses on serving Tracy and the surrounding communities, hosting a multitude of different events that cater to many different ages and demographics. The Chamber also tries to space these events throughout the year to benefit community members. Annual events that take place currently include the following: The Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce has its Annual Banquet either at the end of January or the beginning of February to celebrate community members and the previous year’s success. There are many awards given out that evening which include Farmer of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Boss of the Year, Chamber Member of the Year, and the Diamond Award. This is a great night to recognize all the hard work community members have put back into the community of Tracy. The Prairie Women’s Expo is a vendor show that is held each spring; the show has taken place for 14 years and the committee works all year long to make sure the next show is just a little bit better than the previous year. The Chamber helps sponsor city-wide rummage sales during the third weekend in June. It’s a great time to hunt for treasures. The largest event for the Chamber is Box Car Days on Labor Day weekend, an event that is huge for Tracy and surrounding communities! It is a jam-packed weekend

with events beginning on Friday evening and going through Labor Day with the Grand Parade at 1 p.m. sharp. Please look on the City of Tracy website or the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook for a full list of events and to keep up with any changes! Another big event for the Chamber is the Tracy Area Car & Motorcycle Show. This show is in September and usually takes place in Central Park. This is open to everyone and registration takes place on the day of the show. There is always food, music, and fun had at this event! There are a couple of events in the fall hosted by the Chamber: Trunk or Treat (pictured) and the Parade of Lights! Trunk or Treat takes place around Halloween at the Sanford Tracy parking lot and includes trunks decorated by businesses, organizations and residents. It’s always a great time! The last event of the year takes place in the winter and is an all-day event. The Chamber, along with Chamber businesses, sponsors photos with Santa and a Parade of Lights! Organizations, businesses and families dress up in illuminating outfits and walk through downtown while spectators enjoy hot cocoa and some glow sticks. All of these events wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and support from the dedicated committee members, the committed Chamber Members and the supporting community we have here in Tracy.

Mary in Currie. It is a fully accredited school through the Minnesota Non-Public Schools Accreditation Association. St. Mary’s School is an amazing option for elementary education in the greater-Tracy area. It is a school of academic excellence, integrating moral and spiritual values. This is achieved through a strong faith community, development of positive self-concept, open communication, and the integration of the Gospel Values (forgiveness, service, obedience, self-control, honesty, honor, responsibility, kindness, cooperation, and wisdom). By listening to and acting on the Word of the Gospel, we foster an atmosphere of respect, peace, and justice toward one another. St. Mary’s faith community is soundly rooted in the message of Christ. Its Catholic faith is evident throughout its curriculum and in its positive, nurturing school environment. The school’s faith is lived out through celebrations of the sacraments, in prayer, and in service toward one another. St. Mary’s School teaches to the whole child. In recognizing each student’s unique gifts, the school strengthens and nurtures his or her self-concept. The school demonstrates respect for one another and affirms the dignity of each child, and is able to employ a variety of teaching techniques to help each child reach his or her highest potential, while at the same time celebrating individual differences. A youth dance studio can also be found in downtown Tracy. Downtown Tracy is also home to Lyon County’s only bowling alley. Downtown Tracy is also home to many service and medical businesses. You can find a full service bank, insurance agencies, a hair salon, tanning and massage therapy services, chiropractic services as well as a medical supply business and accountants. Agriculture The highways, county roads and dusty backroads of southwest Minnesota are surrounded by corn and soybean fields — reminders that the Tracy area is part of an agriculture-based region that appreciates its hard-working farm families. At the heart of farming operations in Tracy is CHS, a farmer-owned cooperative that has worked to help America’s farmers be more successful since 1929. CHS Tracy, on 301 South Street, is one of 10 locations in Minnesota, to go along with 10 in South Dakota and one in Nebraska.

story with visitors. The museum boasts the Amiret Post Office and a Car Barn with antique tractors and vintage automobiles. View the power of nature and the horror of the 1968 tornado in pictures. Stop and examine the machinery used by farmers in the early 1900’s. The village, which has recently been repositioned on the grounds and is under construction, includes the Murray County School House (District 91), an 1897 train depot from Volga, SD, the Sundquist summer kitchen, the Springdale-Imker blacksmith shop, St. Mark’s Church and the recently added section foreman’s house . The signature attraction is a four-unit freight train. The engine is a 1915 American locomotive used in the yard of the St. Paul railroad system. The engine and the coal car were sold to a private owner in Rochester, MN and later sold again to the museum site. An immigrant box car from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad complements the engine, as does a caboose, which is the rolling workstation. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday 1-5 p.m.

OUR STORY… PEOPLE CHOOSE TO LIVE, WORK, OR RETIRE IN TRACY FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. THESE RESIDENTS SHARE THEIR STORY. THE SHANE & LEXI ERICKSON FAMILY I can recall many fond memories from my childhood here in Tracy. From spending my summers at the Tracy Aquatic Center, attending sports camps, participating in events at the local library, to just going on walks and being acknowledged – my time in Tracy as a kid was unforgettable and ultimately what drove me to have my family be raised here. My husband and I met in ninth grade at Tracy Area High School and both were very involved in organizations and athletics. To this day we continue to have great relationships with our teachers, coaches, administration; and have decided to continue those relationships by coaching and being a part of community organizations. My husband coached Cubs Football (4-6 grade) for about four years and is now volunteer coaching with the TMB Varsity Football team. Working with local high school quarterbacks through 5 Star QB Academy and hoping to expand to younger ages. I will be starting my sixth year as a junior high volleyball coach and am one of the directors of the local Junior Olympic Volleyball program. Community involvement has been very important to us since we’ve made Tracy our home. In Tracy we are very fortunate to have many opportunities to give back to our community. My husband is currently a board member of the newly formed Tracy Area Community Foundation as well as a board member of the newly formed Return Our Youth Outdoors organization. Both organizations are dedicated to supporting our community members. Although new organizations, the support they have received by community members has been amazing to see. People in Tracy are willing to give time and money to organizations that support Tracy. We are very lucky to have great access to the outdoors — close to Camden Park, Lake Shetek State Park and Garvin Park for hiking; walking out to Swift Lake, or to take the kids fishing there in the summer; close to great lakes for fishing and boating: Shetek, Sarah, Yankton and more. Raising our kids to have the same experiences we had is important to us. For all the things we cherish about Tracy, we want our children to have those same experiences.

THE KOU THAO & KOU LOR FAMILY As a young married couple we lived in the city of Tracy for a short period of time. Like many other young married couples before us, we eventually found a reason to leave. Every reason, actually! Initially, it seemed like a great idea as it gave us a reason to be on our own. However, with time we realized we missed the peace and quietness that a small town had to offer. Although we certainly enjoyed the convenience of big box stores, we also missed that community feel of having neighbors we knew. It wasn’t until 2016 when we found out we were expecting that we decided it was time to move back to Tracy. It’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made! Tracy has become our place of home and has definitely made sense for our little family of three. We get to be a part of a community that values relationships and growth. Our school district does a great job educating and communicating with us as parents,

38 — TRACY COMMUNITY

OUR STORY… THE ANTHONY & KAITLIN ROHLIK FAMILY We have both grown up and valued the quality of life a small town can provide. Kaitlin has lived the majority of her life in Tracy as her family moved here when she was 4. Anthony also grew up in a small town as he grew up in Lucan. We have both lived in other places and large cities, and even though they can be enticing with all of their amenities we feel the most comfortable in small towns, especially in Tracy! We have chosen to raise our family in Tracy for a variety of reasons. One is the safety and familiarity of “everyone knowing everyone else” — it just gives a sense of comfort and kindness when seeing a familiar face at the store. Another blessing of a small town is the help that your neighbors and friends are always willing to give. Tracy also has many businesses that one needs in town: a hospital, grocery store, gas station, bank, restaurants, coffee shop and hardware stores, just to name a few. A few of our favorite family places are the pool, parks, bowling alley and library. Our kids have loved being involved in activities such as dance, soccer, T-ball, and swimming lessons, with more opportunities to come as they get older. Throughout these events, our children don’t get lost in the crowd or aren’t just a number, as they are given the necessary attention and guidance needed to improve their skills. An added bonus is the fun they have and the friendships they have formed. The quality of education that Tracy Area Public Schools provide is also essential for our family. There are many positive things that we could say about the schools, as we enjoy the small class sizes, emphasis on building character skills in addition to having strong academics, advancements in technology, and the overall genuine care the staff provides. Kaitlin attended Tracy Area Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. She came back to the area to teach. She is now teaching kindergarten in the same room that she had kindergarten in! Anthony has enjoyed using his talents in the Tracy area, as he calls numerous games on the radio for TMB Panther athletics, as well as playing and helping to run the Tracy Engineers amateur baseball team. Overall, when thinking about the question, “Why do you live in Tracy?” the answer is as simple as — it’s just home!

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 37 and we appreciate all the time and effort they put in to ensure we’re well supported. Aside from the great relationships we’ve built, we’ve also gotten a chance to take advantage of all the different amenities in town, such as the public library, the parks and the Tracy Aquatic Center. My daughter likes to keep active, and it’s exciting to see that Tracy has a dance academy to allow her to showcase her passion. It’s the best feeling to see your kids thrive in a place where they feel they fit in and belong to. We look forward to building more relationships and seeing Tracy flourish. Although we don’t have the convenience that a large city might have, it’s a great feeling to be a part of a community that embraces relationships and the people within.

OUR STORY… CINNAMON HEN

Cinnamon Hen owners Nancy and Tom Dobson

We had lots of ideas of what we might do in our retirement years. Travel and perhaps sell at Flea Markets often came up. Things became more clear when we decided to move back to Minnesota to be closer to family. We looked at other communities. Tracy, despite being a bit farther from our kids in the Cities, seemed like a great fit for us. It was Tom’s home town. Homes were very affordable, and the small town hospitality was what we had been missing in the hustle and bustle of Phoenix.

We looked at the former Tracy Greenhouse property several years before, but it was outside our price at the time. The building, which had been empty for several years, was still for sale, but it needed a lot of attention. We didn’t think we could get everything done, to live in it, in time for our move, so we gave up the idea and bought a home instead. We were set, or so we thought. But, we just couldn’t get the building, its location and its potential out of our minds We knew it would take a lot of work and resources to get it up and running again. Could we do it? Through the efforts and encouragement of the Tracy EDA and Tracy Development Corporation, we were able to put a deal together and last summer purchased the property after all. We had the goal of opening for Labor Day Weekend. That’s Box Car Days for anyone who has ever lived here. We were able to get the showroom and grounds ready, just in time, and we had great vendors for our first Farmers

Our customer base includes individuals who do not have insurance or are not able to receive sleep apnea units through their insurance, hospitals, clinics, DME’s, etc. We also have a small donation program to help those who do not have the funds to purchase a unit. founded in Tracy, we felt the need to keep it here. Brandon and I are both from small towns — Brandon, Tracy; and myself, Currie. Becoming new owners of a small business, we have been extremely grateful to have all the help from other business owners, the city council, as well as the original owner. Tracy is our home, and we are very thankful to have such a great opportunity to proceed through this journey with such great mentors to help achieve all the goals we have set forth.

Market. The community response was so much more than we had even hoped for. The renovation is still a work in progress. Winter slowed things down but gave us a chance to rest a bit. Our focus this year will be the exterior and addition vendor space in the “copper top room.” Vendors are invited to come join us Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings for crafts, veggies or flea market sales. We can’t wait to see what the summer holds for Cinnamon Hen. We love all the wonderful people we have met. Thank you! Tracy really has become Home Again. If you have a dream, bring it here.
