The Tracy Tornado Tree Memorial Park remembers the nine people who lost their lives in the June 13, 1968 tragedy.

Tracy’s Historic Footnotes June 13, 1968, is a date permanently etched in the annals of Tracy history. A powerful tornado—one of only three F-5 tornadoes to occur in Minnesota over the past 65 years—plowed through the heart of Tracy that night at about 7 p.m. Nine people were killed and scores of houses were destroyed. A “Tornado Tree” monument and flower garden along Hwy. 14 is a memorial to the nine victims of the tornado. Tracy traces its roots to the early 1870s, when the Winona & St. Peter Railroad established a nearby watering station for its steam-powered locomotives. A warehouse, erected to serve settlers at nearby Lake Shetek and Currie, became the town’s first building. The new stopping-off place grew into the town of Shetek Bend that was later renamed “Tracy.” The new prairie town’s prosperity was assured when the community became a division point on the railroad in 1883. Today, Tracy is a bustling town of 2,200 people. Tracy Area Public Schools, Sanford Tracy Medical Center, and Prairie View Senior Living are major employers. Tracy continues to be a major agricultural service center for surrounding farm operations.

Twin Circle Apartments Graced with winding walkways and gorgeous flower gardens, Twin Circle Apartments are one of Tracy’s most distinctive housing complexes. The complex has 12 individual apartment buildings. There are 59 one-bedroom apartments and one twobedroom apartment. A spacious community building has a sun porch and large meeting room for visitors and community gatherings. The building, which has a full-service kitchen, can be rented for meetings, parties and special family gatherings. For more information, call 507-629-3160.

Wheels Across the Prairie Museum Tracy’s rich railroad heritage is well known. The town’s close connection to the railroad is reflected in the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum’s signature attraction: A 1915 switch engine and tender car. Steam-powered train engines and locomotives were once a common sight in Tracy’s railroad yards, which served as a division point for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. The engine and coal cars are paired with a rare wooden box car and a caboose. The vintage train is a guaranteed traffic-stopper. Many passing motorists stop just to look at the train. The newly remodeled Chicago & Northwestern Depot is filled with railroad memorabilia. A section car and semaphore complete the train exhibit. A host of other historical delights await visitors who take the time to roam the sprawling museum grounds. Near the train and depot exhibit, the museum boasts a small village of original pioneer buildings. The oldest is a two-story log cabin that dates from the 1860s. The structure was moved from what was once called the Great Oasis lakes area in Murray County’s Lowville Township. An 1890s town hall and school house still serves as the Monroe Township town hall. A country school, barbershop, post office, and summer kitchen are other original buildings outfitted with original furnishings and artifacts. Replica buildings include a 1930s cottage and chapel. A pole barn contains an extensive array of antique tractors and farm equipment. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was moved from Center and Second Street in Tracy to the museum grounds. St. Mark’s is open to the public each day the museum is open and available for special events, such as weddings, by appointment. Most of the museum’s small collections are displayed in the two-story “barn. The barn was the museum’s first building when the museum opened in 1985. A quilt square was hung on the barn in the spring of 2011. The inside of the barn was updated in 2012. The Wheels Across the Prairie Museum is open from mid-May through Labor Day. Hours are 1-5 p.m. daily. Tours are available and the museum is also open by special appointment. End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum has a host of vintage railroad artifacts.

End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum, located on the former Chicago & Northwestern branch line in Currie, has developed from a 1972 4-H Community Pride project into an interesting and entertaining family attraction. The 1901 hand operated turntable, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only manually operated turntable remaining in the state that is still operable. Railroad Yard The Chicago & Northwestern, Omaha Railroad built a branch line to Currie, arriving in 1899. Having decided not to extend the line any farther west, the railroad built a turntable at the site in 1901. Currie became the end of the line where two men could turn a huge steam locomotive around by hand if it was well balanced on the turntable. The Currie Depot #1958 was built across the road and was moved to the site in 1974. The depot houses the ever popular H-O scale model train. Watch and hear the train pull into the station. You can almost smell the steam! Several structures and machines make up the railroad yard besides the depot. The rebuilt Engine House houses a gorgeous rebuilt 1875 narrow gauge Baldwin steam locomotive and various displays and exhibits. Also onsite is the Chicago & Northwestern water tower from Walnut Grove, a section foreman’s house from Comfrey, and a replica coal bunker that serves as a picnic shelter. On the tracks sit the partially restored Georgia Northern #102 engine, a 1945 Minneapolis and St. Louis Bay Window wood caboose, and a 1942 restored Grand Trunk Western caboose. There is also a Brookville diesel switcher, velocipede, and Fairmont motorcars. Historic Village Several other historic and replica buildings are open for tours. Take a walk along the boardwalk and see what early education was like in the 1873 Sunrise District #1 country schoolhouse. This little one room is typical of the common

school era where all eight grades learned together. The 1871 Presbyterian Church still holds services in the summer months. A replica of Murray County’s first court house, used from 1873-1889, houses exhibits from the early pioneer days of Currie and artifacts from the 1891 Murray County Courthouse in Slayton. Hike over the bridge to the Currie General Store and experience 1870’s shopping at its best. Check out the replica Neil Currie gristmill that holds the original grinding stone that was excavated from the Des Moines River. Events End O Line will be hosting several events this summer: May 30: Birds and Bikes 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. June 27: One Room Schoolhouse Program 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. August 1: Open House (more details to come) September 19: Birds and Bikes 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. We are now open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday. The story of the Charles and Caroline Ingalls family is depicted each year in a colorful outdoor pageant.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant Since 1979, the banks of Plum Creek have been the site of an outdoor Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant. The pageant built on the success of a Wilder play held the previous summer in the Walnut Grove School auditorium. Extensive lighting and sound improvements, and a permanent set on the site, give pageant crowds a high -quality show. The pageant is performed six times each year on the last three weekends of July. A cast of area people volunteer their time to the show. The Wilder Pageant brings to life the story Laura tells in her fourth book of the “Little House” series, On the Banks of Plum Creek. Each night of the pageant, all are welcome to attend meals sponsored by churches and community groups. Menus vary and are moderately priced. Pageant Dates: July 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 & 25. Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Tourist Center The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Tourist Center began in 1974 along with the popular television series “Little House on the Prairie.” The series portrayed the Ingalls family living on the prairie near Walnut Grove. The museum includes many artifacts and a collection of buildings, such as the depot, chapel, dugout, little red schoolhouse, early settler’s home, Heritage Lane, “Grandma’s House,” and gift store. The dugout is the same size as Laura Ingalls Wilder described in her book, “On the Banks of Plum Creek.” Visitors can go inside the dugout and see what it would have been like to live inside a 10’ x 10’ hole in the side of a creek bank. Hands-on exhibits can be found throughout the museum grounds, including the hands-on Main Street and Plum Creek Experience room. There are three murals on the museum grounds as well.

Picture yourself on the back of a covered wagon at the Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove.

Hunting & Fishing The autumn air is crisp. Your boots crunch over the frozen turf. Your dog faithfully scours the corn stubble nearby. Suddenly the air explodes in a flurry of feathers. A rooster darts across the ground to your left. You have just a second to raise your shotgun and draw a bead. Bam! You got him. A beautiful ringneck pheasant in your bags adds to the lustre of a gorgeous fall day. Yes, it’s true! The Shetek area of Southwest Minnesota has wonderful hunting opportunities. State wildlife management areas are sprinkled all over the region. And many private landowners, when courteously asked, are willing to consider hunting requests. For more information, contact the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wildlife offices in Marshall at 507537-6250; Redwood Falls 507-637-4076, Slayton, 507836-6919 or Windom, 507-831-2917. Local sporting goods shops are other good sources of information.
