Ahhhh! The wonderful anticipation of summer I received a short note in March and with the photos of the father and son fishing teams of John and Jerry Moline and Paul LeTendre and me. “Here are some bragging rights for you Joe! Can’t wait ‘til June!” Joe and Renee, members of our summer fishing teams signed the notes, proving once more that anticipation for a summer events is almost as good as enjoying it.

What do you have planned for fun this summer? I am always asking people what their plans are. Nine times out of 10 those summer Minnesota plans will include time out on the water.

When I was growing up in Austin, the kids in our neighborhood would gather under a street light in the early evening and share the places our families planned to go. There were always a couple of kids who had relatives in California, so they talked about driving across the desert and through the mountains, but most of us just shared our northern Minnesota fishing trips to lakes with names such as Pimush, Wabedo, Pike Bay, Cass, Winni, Leech, and Midge.

Our next-door neighbors were big time bullhead fishing people. They caught so many bullheads at Waterville and Morristown, that the mom and dad each had their own bullhead skinning board Every Sunday in the summer, the McKees packed a lunch, tied their bamboo poles to the rain gutter on their car, and headed out for a picnic and some bullhead fishing.

by Hwy. 59, the Des Moines River below Talcot Dam, Lake Wilson, the Fulda lakes, and hundreds of great pasture fishing spots in our county.

The Big Slough southeast of Slayton dumps water in to a stream that meanders south where there is a dam like structure called a water control gate. For a lot of years, a friend and I would take our boys and walk through the Wildlife Management Area and fish bullheads below the dam. We spent the first half of our fishing time hoisting bullheads into the air and over our heads in to the switch grass behind us. We spent the second half of the outing searching for wiggling bullheads in the tall grass.

Eventually, one of the smart boys said: “I will get a bucket and just stand back here and pick them up ‘cause it is easy to find them when you see them fall.”

way she did when she grew up on a farm

by Lake Shetek. Grandma and the two girls headed to the dikes on the west side of Shetek and grandma taught the girls how to catch bullheads. When they had enough for a meal, she packed the kids into her van, headed back to her farm, showed the girls how to skin bullheads, and then she topped off their day by cooking the fresh fish to a golden brown.

Now, is that something to look forward to or what?

• • • Fishing is what many of us anticipate, but our grandchildren look at summer

and see themselves jumping into a lake from our family pontoon. We have a little grandson who is two. If he follows his cousins, who are now 6 and 7, he will jump off the pontoon for his first time this summer. Inner tubes, float boards, water wings, squirt guns, just about anything that floats is a toy for the water.

And, of course, water itself is a toy when someone thinks up the idea of water balloons and water fights.

What are your plans for summer? If you don’t have any, making some soon, because anticipation is a wonderful bonus.

‘Tower of Babel’ lives on for fishing trips, despite GPS technology

Question: Have cellphones and GPS taken the excitement out of our fishing travels?

The vast majority of my AARP friends responded to this question with a very loud “yes.” With cellphones and GPS we always know exactly where each of the 8 vehicles in our fishing group is, and we even know exactly what our position is.

Remember how exciting it was to discover you were about to enter Wadena when you were expecting to enter and meet other guys at Brainerd?

Remember how much fun it was to visit with Conservation Officers from Ontario when you thought you were fishing in Manitoba? Do you remember when the guy who had taken over the controls of the Suburban at Grand Forks, on your way to Winnipeg, when the owner of the Suburban woke up and asked the driver why the sun was coming in the rear window. You are right folks. We were headed west to Devil’s Lake, ND., instead of north to Winnipeg.

When we finally got back on I-29 and headed north toward Winnipeg, we met some of our own guys at Warsaw, ND. They were headed back south to look for us. Our reunion was kind of like the passage in the Bible about the “weeping and gnashing of teeth!”

Years ago, we were just finishing our evening meal at Turtle Portage, Ontario when two very wet, very tired, and very confused men of advanced age knocked at our cabin door. Before they took the time to tell us why they were at our door at 6:30 p.m, one of them shouted: “Where are we?” The cabin is decorated with giant maps of every drop of water in Lake of the Woods from Nestor Falls to

Kenora, Monument Bay, and Baudettt, so we walked over to the one that featured our cabin.

Pointing to the big colored area that is the cabin we were in, our guy said: “You are right here. Now where did you think you were?” The leader of this lost team of two said: “Looks like we turned seven miles too soon.” Just think, if those guys would have had a GPS, they never would have had the enjoyment of meeting us.

“I will meet you at 4:30 this afternoon

at the gas station between Garvin and Marshall.” My friend and I were to drive to Fargo where we were scheduled to connect with the other units of our caravan to Canada. The gas station at Garvin had been closed for a bunch of years, so the only station I could think of was one called Kaerkerts just south of Marshall, so I drove there and waited. At 5:15 pm I drove back toward Garvin. There, with his father, was my friend waiting for me. If we had had cell

phones at that time, I wouldn’t have this story to write.

Oh, the Tower of Babel still exists to this day in the world of the out of doors. Even when one person speaks with another via cellphone things can get screwed up.

Ruins are eerie legacy of 19th century trader

Because of the size of his family, Joseph R. Brown needed a home much larger than the log cabins many of his farmer friends had built. And because he was a wealthy man, he was able to build his “dream home” out of granite blocks quarried near his land.

When construction was completed in 1862, Brown and his wife and their 12 children resided in a magnificent threeand-a-half story mansion with 19 rooms high atop a hill. The top two stories had large balconies that family members could go out onto to enjoy a warm summer day or to take a look at the picturesque beauty of nature in front of them. The balconies offered a view of the Minnesota River several hundred yards to the south where steamboats would often stop at a landing Brown had built.

A well east of the house was also built using granite blocks. A stable sheltered Brown’s horses, and a root cellar provided food storage.

“Sadly, the family was only able to enjoy the home for a few months before it was set on fire by the Dakota during the uprising,” said Linda Balk of the Renville County Historical Society. “Most of their belongings were destroyed by the fire.”

Ruins still stand Today, portions of the house’s cemented granite walls can still be seen on a hillside south of what is now Sacred Heart, off Renville County Road 15. The surviving front and sidewalls vary in height from three to five feet high.

The dimensions of the house were 47 feet, 4 inches by 27 feet, six inches.

A portion of the second story back wall facing north still sits atop the firststory blocks and together they stand approximately 12 feet high. However the other three second-story walls and the entire top floor has succumbed to time, climatic elements and vandalism.

Several blocks fell inside the structure and settled on the first floor. Many other blocks can still be seen in a pile a few yards northwest of the home near a grove of trees.

Brown was born in Maryland in 1805

and was raised in Pennsylvania. When he was 13 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and eventually came to Minnesota in 1819 as a drummer boy with the first troops assigned to build Fort Snelling.

“Following the Sioux uprising, farmers in the area took a lot of the blocks to use on their own homes and buildings,” said Balk. “Unfortunately, there are no known photographs that exist of the house.”

However, artists have used written descriptions from family members and others to sketch drawings of what the house likely looked like over 150 years ago.

The State of Minnesota acquired the Brown house ruins and three acres of land in 1937 for use as a park. Today, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources maintains the site as a memorial wayside park.

Prominent figure Joseph R. Brown is a familiar name only to the most ardent historians. But a look into his background is likely to stir interest in others, as well. While the Sioux Uprising of 1862 caused widespread panic, some historians believe that had Brown not have been replaced in his duties as Indian Agent by a man that showed no respect toward the Dakotas, tension between the whites and the Indians may not have been as heated and a resolution to the conflict may have been easier to achieve. Others believe Brown may have fueled the uprising

‘Smart Fish’ adds new wiggle to bottom fishing

He remained at Fort Snelling as a soldier until 1825 and then built a friendship with the Dakota people as a trader. His first trading post was near Fort Snelling.

For the next 10 years, Brown was associated with the American Fur Company headed by Henry Sibley, who would later become the first governor of Minnesota. Brown was assigned to posts along the Minnesota River.

In 1835 while stationed at Traverse Lake north of Browns Valley, Brown and Frenier, a daughter of a Dakota mother and a French father, were wed. During the 1840s, the couple lived at a site that Brown platted and named “Dakota.”

That town today is known as Stillwater.

Brown also founded and named the Minnesota River town of Henderson in 1852. He named is after his favorite aunt Margaret Henderson. Brown is buried in the Brown Cemetery in Henderson, his site marked with a huge obelisk monument. Brown County and Browns Valley are also named after him.

During life, Brown was a politician, fur trader, farmer, lumberman, stagecoach line owner, justice of the peace, clerk of courts, register of deeds, printer, and newspaper editor, publisher and owner.

He was actively involved in politics and served both legislative houses, while playing a major role in legislation that created the Minnesota territory.

Office in attic Brown built his home near Sacred Heart shortly after he lost his agency position. He hired a construction crew and they cut the pinkish-colored granite blocks from a quarry nearby.

The house is the earliest known that is made of quarried granite in Minnesota.

Interior walls were constructed of bricks produced at the Upper Sioux Agency government brickyards. The interior walls were solidified with several coats of lime plaster. Various colors were used in rooms by adding different tints of animal hair to the plaster mixture.

The first floor of the home had a wide central hallway, with two large rooms believed to be a kitchen and dining area and four smaller rooms possibly used as pantries or for storage. The upper two floors were mainly bedrooms for the children. Some may have been used as sitting rooms and parlors. Brown used the attic as an office, which was outfitted with a desk and a billiards table.

Warned to leave On Aug. 19, 1862, while Brown was on a trip to New York, Susan Brown was warned that the Dakota were burning homes and that she should take her 12 children and leave immediately. They

When I showed the actual lure to an experienced walleye fishing guide, his reaction was like that of Commandant Klink of the TV show “Hogan’s Heroes” when he said in kind of a broken German accent: “Wary Interesting!”

fled on wagons pulled by oxen, but were soon captured and held in Chief Little Crow’s encampment. It is believed that the reason they were released six weeks later was because of Susan’s Indian heritage.

The Brown’s home was gutted by the fire and nearly all of their belongings lost or destroyed.

Archaeological survey In 1938, archaeologists from the Minnesota Division of State Parks excavated the Brown’s home and land in an attempt to collect information for a possible reconstruction of the house. The blocks that had fallen inside the house were covered with dirt and sod over time and had served as barriers from possible looters and souvenir enthusiasts, who were unaware of the buried belongings.

After the blocks, bricks and mortar were removed, a thick layer of ash acted as a buffer for some of the Brown’s personal items. Archaeologists found over 3,000 items. They were able to identify items such as metal parts of a piano, door locks, hinges and nails. Also found were broken china, meat grinder, iron kettles, a cooking stove, brass candlesticks and a sewing machine. The sewing machine, although in two pieces, is now located in the Renville County Historical Society in Morton. The sewing machine, and items like a piano and brass candlesticks, were considered luxuries in the 1860s.

The Minnesota Historical Society conducted further excavations in 1968.

They were unable to locate the stable, well or root cellar, which had been removed or buried during excavating work 30 years prior to that. The steamboat landing was also not found, leading historians to believe that the constant changing course of the river had erased any remnants of the landing by 1968.

It is believed that the wayside site marker, placed there in 1959, now stands where the stable once was.

for birds and thought we were in the wrong place when we didn’t discover any. Luckily, the guys who sent us there were arriving just as we were leaving and we followed them into the bay for a great day of walleye fishing. When we questioned the guys about there being no birds there, they responded by saying: “Oh sometimes there aren’t any birds there but you can always tell it is the right bay because it is the first one you see when you go around those last two islands.” I looked back and I couldn’t see any islands because they blended into the woods beyond them.

Luckily, my son marked the bay on his GPS and we will be able to find it again.

Maybe we should call it Babel Bay! For those of you who don’t remember the story of the Tower of Babel, it can be found in the Bible at Genesis 11: 1-9.

Les Misérables might be the world’s most popular musical.

Set during the French Revolution, the stage version of Les Misérables has been seen by some 65 million people in 42 countries. A 2012 film starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway brought the musical drama to an even wider audience.

In June, the Les Misérables phenomenon of love, redemption, and forgiveness is coming to Marshall. The Marshall Area Stage Company plans seven performances of the beloved musical, June 4-6, and June 11-14, at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts.

“It’s ambitious, and it’s a show that requires a lot of talent to pull off,” comments Director Mike Hulsizer, who previously directed Beauty and the Beast for MASC. Putting on Les Misérables, one of his favorite musicals, had always been a dream of his. He decided “to go for it” after conversations in the local arts community convinced Hulsizer that the area had the talent and enthusiasm for a quality show.

“There was a lot of interest from talented singers, musicians, actors, and those that have become our production team, as well as from people who will be our audience.”

Since rehearsals began in April, Hulsizer hasn’t been disappointed.

“We’ve got a really talented cast that’s been working hard to refine their

characters.”

Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean (Brad Louwagie), a French peasant convicted for stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving child. After serving 19 years in prison, the paroled convict finds himself shunned by society. A kind bishop (Steve Meyer) gives Valjean shelter and food, but the exconvict repays the cleric’s k i n d n e s s by stealing his silver.

When police apprehend the fugitive and bring him back to the bishop, the church leader tells authorities that he gave the silver to Valjean. Stunned by the bishop’s magnanimity, Valjean pledges himself to a conscientious life of service to others.

But a police inspector named Javert (John Rabaey) is obsessed with bringing Valjean, who has broken his parole, to justice. Javert and Valjean’s paths cross again years later, after the former prisoner has made himself a new life as Monsieur Madeline, a prosperous factory owner and a respected town mayor. A moral dilemma soon confronts Monsieur Madeline: should he confess to authorities that he is really Jean Valjean

and go to prison in order to save an innocent man from being imprisoned, or are his greater responsibilities with those who depend on his continued beneficence?

The conflict between Valjean and Javert intersects with a pantheon of memorable characters. Fantine (Emilirose Rasmussen) is abandoned by her lover and ridiculed by society b e c a u s e of her outof-wedlock d a u g h t e r, Cosette.

Unable to support her d a u g h t e r, C o s e t t e , (Theresa Hanson) Fantine becomes a prostitute, sells her beautiful locks of hair, and turns Fantine’s care over to the Thenardiers (Alexander Castro and Sara Mills), a pair of unscrupulous innkeepers.

Marius (Wes Myers), a young revolutionary, and Cosette fall in love, unaware of Eponine’s (Alicia Webb) passion for Marius.

The intertwining stories are set against the backdrop of the French revolution.

Monsieur and Madame Thenardier (Alexander Castro and Sara Mills) combine for a cruel comic relief.

the Les Misérables score is a hit parade of memorable songs, including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “One Day More,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”

• • • Hulsizer says that musical ability was the first criteria in casting the show. Acting ability was the second most important consideration, with how well physical appearance fit specific characters the third factor.

The result, has been, a very strong cast.

Louwagie, he feels, is an ideal Jean Valjean.

“Brad brings out the musical dynamics that are so important for this part, and he looks the part. He will wow the audience in his role.”

Rabaey, as Javert, also has an excellent mix of acting and singing ability, the director feels. “He is a great counter part to Brad as they face off in the show.”

The director gives high marks to all the principals. Rasmussen, a veteran of many MASC productions, is a singer in

the Prairie Arts Chorale. “She can sing.

Her character is the first to die on stage, and she does so beautifully,” Hulsizer says.

Hanson, who plays Cosette, is a newcomer to the MASC stage, but has experience in several high school plays.

“Teresa can sing the high notes the part requires, and she looks the part, beautiful.”

The director also likes how Webb has taken on the role of Eponine.

“She has such a sad part, being in love with someone that’s taken, and being the first to die at the barricade. Her performance will touch hearts, will make you cry. She just may steal the show,” Hulizer says.

The director feels he has many strong performers, and not just in the principal roles.

“Our ensemble has many great singers as well, there’s lots of depth. When they sing songs such as ‘Do you Hear the People Sing?’ the power behind those voices bring pause. They are awesome.’”

• • • Louwagie, a well-known soloist for “All My Favorites,” says it is both a great honor, and also a humbling experience, to be selected to play Valjean.

“There are a lot of people in this cast who could play Valjean.” The role, he said, requires great emotional energy, as well as musical stamina. “There are a lot of words and music to learn,” but he said he’s having a “wonderful” time working with the cast and learning the music.

Rasmussen said it’s been a thrill to play Fantine, but also very challenging.

Cosette (Theresa Hanson) and Marius (Wes Myers) have a tortuous path to love.

Fantine’s songs, she notes, pack a powerful emotional punch.

“There’s a lot of music to learn,” comments Kurtis Parlin, who plays the revolutionary leader Enjolras. Les Misérables is almost three-hours of nonstop songs, with a minimum of dialog, he notes, rather than lots of dialog piecing together a few songs. The strong score, he indicates, makes the musical especially engaging for the cast.

But there’s still time for fun.

“I’m having a blast,” says Castro, who portrays the innkeeper, Thenardier with relish.

Nearly 60 people are in the cast.

• • • The Marshall Les Misérables will be performed with a pit orchestra directed

by John Ginocchio. The show’s vocal director is Helen Pedersen. Breanna Ahmann is choreographer, Nathaniel Gates is technical and lighting director and Paula Nemes is serving as production manager and costume director. Dave Johnson is stage manager Diane Wright has been the rehearsal pianist.

Winged wonders Author chronicles state park birds

Minnesota State Parks are for the birds.

At least that’s what Bob Janssen feels.

The 82-year-old noted ornithologist and birder trekked to all 75 state parks in Minnesota, compiling a list of the feathered friends in each one.

Janssen has compiled that information into a new book called “Birds of Minnesota State Parks” that was released last month.

“There are 439 species of birds that have been recorded in Minnesota,” he revealed. “I’ve seen 406 of them.”

“Birds of Minnesota State Parks” divides the state into four ecological regions, which gives detailed information on the state parks in each area and what kinds of birds are likely to be seen.

Janssen figures that 315 of the 439 recorded bird species in Minnesota currently reside in Minnesota’s

state parks.

From 1997-2007, Janssen worked as a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources consultant, compiling record bird species in state parks.

That information, along with information he collected since then, is included in his book.

The project took Janssen 18 years to complete. Initially, he hadn’t thought about putting the bird information in book form. Several years ago, a DNR employee suggested a book.

But nothing came of it until he was approached in 2012 by Carrol Henderson, the head of the DNR’s non-game wildlife program. Henderson also happens to be an avid birder and author.

said Janssen. “I completed it this past August.”

The 222-page volume includes a section for each of the state parks, including pictures, and maps showing the general locations birds can be found in each park.

“We live in an indoor, computerdominated world in which children have fewer and fewer opportunities to see birds in the wild,” writes Henderson in the book’s forward. “Thankfully, in Minnesota we have an absolutely wonderful state park system that is one of the best in the nation. One of the great natural assets of these parks is the diversity of birdlife that can be experienced in every season of the year.”

• • • Janssen has had an interest in birds since he was a young boy.

“I was five years old and growing up in south Minneapolis,” he explains.

“I was just learning to ride my bike and one day I went through a meadow and a bird flew up in my face. For some reason I can’t explain, I knew it was a meadowlark. And I was hooked right there and have been fascinated with birds ever since.”

Janssen has tracked birds in California, Florida, Alaska, Texas and Washington, as well as Costa Rica and Spain. But his heart is and always will be with Minnesota.

“I’m a provincial Minnesota guy,” he explained. “I have birded in other places, but I bird intently in Minnesota.”

Spending 18 years tracking and studying birds in state parks in his home state verifies that dedication. He traveled to every one of the 75 state parks, many of them more than once.

Janssen estimates he has driven between 50,000-70,000 miles chasing his statepark bird passion.

With all the different species of birds, you would expect Janssen’s favorite feathered friend to be an extraordinarily rare bird with vivid colors. Not so.

“My favorite is the turkey vulture,” he laughed. “It’s a downright ugly bird, I know. And they eat dead food. But they are an incredibly gifted flying bird.

They are magnificent to watch in flight because they take advantage of wind currents. They can fly for hundreds of miles without flapping their wings by just floating in the currents of air.”

“That bird had never been recorded in Minnesota before,” Janssen said. “I was the first to record it.”

Lake Shetek Lake Shetek is the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota. As a result, it is a superb place to observe waterfowl migration in spring and fall. The word

shetek in Ojibwe means pelican, and it certainly fits for this lake – from spring to fall the birder can see American White Pelicans loafing and feeding on Lake Shetek. Over 180 bird species have been recorded in this park, including 20 species of neotropical migrant warblers, plus thrushes, flycatchers, and sparrows.

Watch the skies over the park for soaring broad-winged hawk, Swainson’s hawk, bald eagle, osprey, and northern harrier.

Camden Nearly 200 bird species have been recorded in this park. In May, look for 20 species of neotropical migrant warblers that have been recorded in the park.

Any number of woodpeckers should be common in these woodlands. Many wild turkeys are in the wooded hillsides.

Lac qui Parle This park could be the goose capital of the Minnesota State park system.

In late March, I watched thousands of Canada goose, intermixed with greater white-fronted geese, snow geese, and an occasional Ross’s goose pass over this park. Accompanying these flocks

Tall grass Prairie events planned “The Story of Tatanka-Bison at Blue Mounds” is planned Friday, May 29, at Blue Mounds State Park.

Visitors driving through Montevideo’s business district will likely notice a statue on the east side of South First Street.

But it’s unlikely they’ll recognize the name inscribed on the 15-foot bronze sculpture.

Yet General Jose Gervasio Artigas is an important figure to the city of Montevideo and a link to its popular Fiesta Day celebration. This year marks the 70th anniversary of Fiesta Days.

Known as “The Father of Uruguyan Independence,” Artigas’ dream was that the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata government would follow the same federalist ideas as the United States. In fact, Artigas was so enamored with the United States’ government that it’s been said that he carried a copy of the Constitution with him. But the Buenos Aires government did not succumb to Artigas’ coaxing, feeling that type of government wasn’t best suited for their people.

Artigas was born June 19, 1764 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He grew up a “gaucho” (cowboy), as evidenced by the way Dante Costa designed and created the statue of him waving his gaucho hat in the air. Artigas eventually became a member of the Buenos Aires junta with whom he led and won many battles against Portugal and Spain.

Artigas later became a champion of federalism against Buenos Aires and was eventually exiled to Paraguay in 1820, where he lived for 30 years until his death in 1850. Uruguayan Independence was achieved just eight years after his exile.

The Artigas statue in Montevideo is one of two replicas of the original bronze statue that stands in San Jose de Marco, Uruguay. The other is located at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Virginia Avenue in Washington D.C. The 3,000-pound statue that stands in Montevideo was a gift from its sister city in Montevideo, Uruguay, as a goodwill gesture in 1949.

The first Fiesta Days event in Montevideo in 1946 was three days long.

Three years later, when the Artigas statue was erected on what is now Artigas Plaza, Minnesota Governor Luther Youngdahl attended Fiesta Days, along with several other political figures. Several of the men in attendance donned gaucho hats in honor of Artigas and its sister city, while many of the women were adorned with headdresses and gowns similar to those worn in Uruguay. Barbecue parties were held throughout the town, a queen coronation took place, and there was an international broadcast to Uruguay.

Today’s Fiesta Days bear little resemblance to its modest beginnings.

Montevideo’s Fiesta Days has become a huge eight-day town celebration This year’s event begins Sunday, June 14. The sixth day (June 19) of the event this year marks’ Artigas’ 251st birthday.

Fiesta Days opens with a Fly-In Breakfast at the Montevideo Airport and features free airplane rides for ages 8-17. Throughout the week, the community is abuzz with a large influx of visitors. Events include Junior and Senior Royal Ambassador Coronations, 5K Hunger Walk and 5K Fun Run, Triathlon, fishing contest, fishing clinic,

disc golf tournament, duck races, canoe and kayak races, craft sale, Firemen’s Fun Day, community picnic, book sale, Farmer’s Market, bike rodeo, kiddie parade, dances, Community Ed Kid’s Day with a myriad of activities, golf tournament, a Riverfest Rendezvous/ Uruguayan Barbecue with live music, a Grande Day parade, and more.

On June 21, the concluding day of Fiesta Days, an International Ceremony will be held in the Artigas Plaza from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

While many things have changed from the original Fiesta Days, what hasn’t changed is the appreciation and admiration the town of Montevideo, Minn. still has for its sister city. The statue of General Artigas waving his hat acts as a gentle reminder to that.

of geese are thousands of ducks coming into the park. Among the 175 species, the birder can see 27 warbler and vireo species, 26 ducks and goose species, and a wide variety of sparrows, flycatchers, and woodpeckers.

Blue Mounds The birder might want to rename Blue Mounds State Park to Blue Grosbeak State Park because this is what first comes to mind when Blue Mounds State Park is mentioned to birders. It’s the most reliable place in Minnesota to find the blue grosbeak. This is the premier park for birders in western Minnesota. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded in this relatively small park, including 29 different species of warblers. Sprague’s pipit and a Swainson’s hawk circling overhead gives a birder a feeling of what Minnesota was like in pre-settlement times.

Flandrau New Ulm is one of the best birdwatching areas in southern Minnesota. A total of 158 species have been recorded here, with nearly 90 of these species represented as potential breeding birds during June and July.

Twenty-four migrant species of warblers have been spotted. Eight of them remain to nest in suitable areas. The cerulean warbler is a rare nesting species in the state. Redshouldered and broad-winged hawks are regularly seen circling over the Cottonwood River Valley.

Fort Ridgely Fort Ridgely State Park is a relatively small park, but in its 500 acres there is much for the birder to enjoy. The Fort Ridgely Creek runs the full length of the park from north to south. Several trails follow the creek and give a birder a chance to see many of the 159 species of birds recorded in the park. This area is a natural migration corridor for many migrating birds, including raptors, warblers, flycatchers, vireos, sparrows, and thrushes. Look and listen for bobolinks, eastern bluebirds, sedge wrens, and western meadowlarks.

Towering festival has patriotic theme The vintage water tower that graces the skyline of Pipestone is the inspiration for the town’s 26th Annual Watertower Festival.

The Thursday through Saturday, June 25-27 event, is being planned with a theme “Salute the Troops.”

Thursday’s activities include a kid’s tractor pedal pull at 6 p.m. and the Little Miss Watertower Festival pageant at 7 p.m.

A street dance will take place Friday evening starting at 9 p.m.

Saturday begins with a kid’s fun run at 8:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. A downtown craft vendor show will be going on all day starting at 9:00 a.m. The day ends with a 5K “Glo-Run” starting at 9 p.m.

Western Fest returns to Granite Falls

Granite Falls saddles up for its Western Fest Stampede Rodeo Thursday through Saturday, June 25-27, at the Lee Mar Ranch.

Seven events are scheduled: bareback riding, saddle-bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. There will be rodeo entertainment from specialty act Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey. Children can participate in the rodeo action in a “mutton-busting” competition, by riding a sheep for as long as they can. Parents

are encouraged to pre-register their child.

There will be chances to participate at each rodeo performance.

Activities are planned in the downtown area of Granite Falls as well, including a kiddie parade, craft sale, and kiddie carnival.

Saturday will be highlighted by a 1 p.m. “grand parade” and a street dance starting at 9 p.m.

Kilen Woods This park of just over 200 acres has a list of birds higher than its acreage. A total of 228 species have been recorded in Kilen Woods State Park, which features densely-wooded riverine hillsides, floodplain woodlands, and upper prairie grasslands. These types of habitat mean an abundance of birds. The Henslow’s sparrow, an endangered species in Minnesota, and the cerulean warbler and red-shouldered hawk, both species of concern in the state, have been recorded in the park.

Upper Sioux Agency This park is less known as a lucrative birding site. But a total of 211 species of birds have been recorded and this number will increase as more birders become interested in this park. The wide Minnesota River Valley is a natural flyway for birds. Nearly 110 species of birds are known to be in the park through June and July.

Migrant sparrows, including white-crowned, Harris’s, fox, and Lincoln’s are more apt to be found in the fall. There are 23 species of shore birds, including sandpipers, are also found here. The wooded hillsides are places to find migratory warblers, vireos, thrushes and flycatchers.

‘Hospital Days’ tradition still healthful Westbrook ‘Fun Days’ began as benefit for hospital

Westbrook area residents have always worked hard to support community causes. Fun Days (June 25-28) raises funds for community projects just as Westbrook Hospital Days used to raise money for the local hospital.

With eight patient beds, Westbrook has the distinction of being home to Minnesota’s smallest functioning hospital. The facility began as a dream of Daniel Schmidt, a Westbrook farmer, and his son Dr. Henry Schmidt, who returned to the area to practice medicine close to 100 years ago.

The elder Schmidt didn’t give up on his dream when Henry died during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Papers of incorporation were signed, and the Dr. Henry Schmidt Memorial Hospital was born in 1947. A large donation from Schmidt supplemented community donation.

Within a year, more than 450 area women joined over 20 hospital auxiliary units. Area nurses, 19 strong, formed the Clara Barton Club as another means of supporting the new hospital. Groups worked diligently to collect food and medical supplies before the doors opened in January 1951. The auxiliary disbanded several years ago, but the Clara Barton group is still alive and well.

Westbrook and surrounding communities faithfully supported their hospital through annual apron auctions.

More than $2,000 was raised at the last auction in 2004. One of the early fundraising endeavors was performing humorous one-act plays. In 1967 the three one-act plays raised $350 for the hospital. Staff candy sales added $75 to the total.

September 1967 marked the first “official” Westbrook Hospital Days.

Auxiliary ladies prepared and sold hamburgers, homemade potato salad and pies. An auction, teen dance, Blue Mound catered dinner, and a dance also took place. $5,500 was raised that year.

The amount of money raised continued to increase over the years, and in 1987, the annual event netted more than $12,000.

hospital was no longer independent, and auxiliary membership continued to decline.

In 1995, the hospital board made the decision to pair with the Sioux Valley Hospital system in Sioux Falls, S.D. This merger meant that Schmidt Memorial was no longer an independent hospital under the ownership of local residents.

Benefits of the merger far outweighed the drawbacks because specialists started coming to Westbrook on a regular basis.

Patients no longer needed to make a 200mile round trip to Sioux Falls for a doctor visit.

Another name change occurred in 2007 when philanthropist T. Denny Sanford donated $400 million to the Sioux Valley hospital system. Today, Sanford Westbrook Health Center serves primarily by stabilizing patients before they are transferred to Sioux Falls, Rochester or other major medical center.

“Community support is phenomenally strong in Westbrook. They understand health issues,” said Lori Hebig, Sanford marketing and community relations manager for Westbrook and Tracy hospitals. “The staff is phenomenal, the administration is great and Dr. Andy

Saturday’s schedule begins with a 5K run/walk. Registration is at 7:15 a.m. and the race at 8. A variety of events during the day include kids’ summer Olympics, dunk tank, 4-person golf scramble, pedal tractor pull for children, bingo, open swimming and tours of Westbrook’s museum. A new event this year is human foosball.

Reliable Shad Raps can catch fish at many different depths When it comes to fishing, the neatest thing since sliced bread is a lure known as the Shad Rap. My Christmas present from my fishing son this year was a set of four of my favorite Shad Rap sizes and colors. If you have a hard to buy for person who fishes on your gift list, you won’t go wrong choosing a set like you see above.

There are top water lures, and bottom seeking lures, and the shad rap is the lure that fits perfectly between the bottom and the top of the water. Rapala has designed them to run in exactly the depth of water you are fishing. The box they come in will tell you what depth they are designed for, and the directions are right on the money.

In June of 2014, we searched for water with a temperature walleyes liked, and in one case we didn’t find that water until we reached a depth less than five feet. We tied on our favorite shad colors and started trolling in just four feet of water in a far back shallow bay of a very big lake.

My son likes a chartreuse-based color and my favorite is a combination known as Clown. Regular passes through this shallow water produced a walleye for each of us on every pass. By noon of the first day, each of our seven boats had a limit of walleyes. All of us were using Shad Rap SR-5’s.

an eight-mile boulder-strewn dike peels off into 15 feet from the dike, and out into the reservoir a least a half of a mile.

The Shad Rap SR-7 is my favorite size for big northerns in this area and I have caught Master Angler northerns on both crawfish colored and clown pattern No. 7’s. This area is also the staging area for big female walleyes after they spawn, and the No. 7 is a favorite of the walleyes too.

Charteusse, Fire-Tiger, Clown, Crawdad, Pearl, and Purple are some of the Rapala Shad Rap patterns that will catch you walleyes all the way from Lake Sarah in Murray County to Cedar Lake at Grand Rapids, Manitoba.

Don’t worry about your favorite fisherman already having the Shad Raps you buy because a frayed line or a snag can make a shad rap disappear forever. To fish without more than one of your favorite pattern is like buying one shotgun shell for the whole duck season.

Lakefield festival takes on country flavor Lakefield’s Summerfest has “Gone Country” this year! Events will begin on June 15 with the start of the medallion hunt, and run through the 21st.

On Wednesday, June 17, the Little Miss and Mr. Lakefield pageant will take place at 6 p.m. with old county fair games to follow.

A family fun night, dunk tank, and the Michelle Lesch Glow Run will take place on Friday June 19 with a VFW dance starting at 8 p.m.

A grand parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. There is also music in the park, kid’s tractor pedal pull and a street dance that night.

Luverne rounds up Buffalo Days fun Luverne is ready for its 31st annual Buffalo Days Friday through Sunday, June 5-7.

The event kicks off on Friday with a cruise-in starting at 6 p.m. downtown, with live entertainment by the Starfires at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday is filled with activities including Arts in the Park starting at 9 a.m. A parade down Luverne’s Main Street begins at 10 a.m. Free children’s inflatables will be set up

at the park.

Following the end of WW II a huge resurgence of baseball inflamed the small towns and cities of Minnesota. Between 1946 and the early 1960s it resembled a prairie fire. It seems every town had a team (and sometimes two). From 1948-57 in particular fans were caught hook, line and sinker. Although most still surviving from that era have a wealth of stories and experiences from baseball to share, I have my own recollections – many connected to Milo Melvin Jacobsen.

Reflecting back to my youth I continue in the realization that my heroes were mostly born in the ‘20s, grew up in the “Dirty 30s” fought in World War II, and were to give my generation multiple examples of life well lived.

There was no T.V., but in Slayton our real life heroes were frequent visitors to Jake’s Barber Shop. Jake didn’t live a long

life, he died on Sept. 9, 1955 at the age of 46 and yet former Slaytonians like Phil Frerk, myself, and Tom Pryor often share thoughts of Jake. We plan to visit his plot at Fort Snelling National Cemetery this summer. In September 1955 John D. Weber wrote this short tribute upon Jake’s death entitled “Jake lost His Last Game.”

Milo (Jake the Barber) lived less than 10 years in Slayton, but his contributions to youth were never ending. For me being batboy on the ‘48 Slayton team was crucial to my baseball learning curve. Above all he passed on his love for playing the game.

In my research for this article I’ve found that nearly every town had a “Jake and a barber shop,” or local heroes that many boys looked up to. My hope is that somehow, some one, those that still recall those days and those players willing assist the Murray County Historical Society (or any historical museum) gather as much baseball history as is possible for the next generations.

Their success on the mound was minimal as age, being out of shape, and carrying some baggage limited their success. Yet both pitchers at

could really change speeds (slow and really slow) and keep hitters off balance.

Glen was known as the “letter man,” he came into the barbershop and said “give me a letter.” Someone would say “O” and Glen would say “O is for Ott and his restless right foot, when he leaned on the pellet the pellet stayed put.” He had every letter down and by summer’s end I had memorized most of them. I still can do the entire alphabet.

A spot in every town I’ve talked to many over the years that played ball in Southwest Minnesota and found that nearly every town had a gathering point to critique the game, players, and umpires. Barbershops seemed to be the most prevalent, but gas stations, pool halls, cafes, etc. were all popular.

When I settled in Tracy, the Donaldson Lumberyard had a large room labeled “Hot Stove League Headquarters.” With research, one could probably unearth great stories from Walt Wiggens’ shop in Walnut Grove and Leo Gebhard’s in Lamberton. Jim Muchlinski, who was a stellar first baseman at Ivanhoe for 12 years, passed on to me the barbershop picture. The players were given the location of a hidden key and were allowed to shower after night games.

Jim recalled one game that was rehashed until the morning sun came through the window.

Jim eventually located in Marshall as a teacher and coach and owns many plaques for his efforts on behalf of Marshall youth. Only recently did I learn that Jim hit .446 for Ivanhoe’s 1954 state tourney team and that he also holds a possibly unbreakable record of 14 consecutive hits in 1955.

Right next to Jake’s Barber Shop was Jerry Holden’s Café and Pool Hall that exhibited a large board (refreshed after each game) with complete player stats including batting average, etc. Looking back I realize that some fine players got off to a slow start and were released after only two or three games.

A fine book could have been written if one had recorded, daily, the many stories throughout Southwest Minnesota. Now as I reflect on those pleasant times I feel guilty to have sat for hours in the barber shop while potential customers walked by thinking that there were too many waiting for haircuts and went across the street to another barber. One of Slayton’s great all around athletes, Phil Frerk set up a shoe shine station and was able to work while he listened to the sports banter.

Pitching to Babe Ruth In those great baseball years of 1948-57 I was fortunate to know many of these men, my special heroes, whom I wish I could have seen play in their prime. I know that the majority spent sometime in Jake’s Barber Shop and I was able to soak in some of their experiences.

For example: George Pipgras telling about the day he was pitching for the

New York Yankees in 1932 and Babe Ruth supposedly called his shot: pointing the bat toward the center field fence and then hitting a home run to the spot. George only said, “Read the papers,” or “That’s what the Babe said.”

Many of the barbershop stories related to men they had played with or against, or incidents that had taken place over the years. I treasure those moments yet today and recall some exact words. For example: “Publicity is like poison, it’s a good thing if you don’t swallow it.”

“Imitation is so valuable, you have to watch players better than you and see how they do it,” or “To humble a hotshot kid like me!”

I walked into Jake’s and he asked how our game came out, my answer: “We won and I went 4 for 4.” Without a breath he said – “Who was pitching, Karen Weck?” (a local girl around my age). The men roared in laughter and I stayed away for at least a week.

Playing game ‘right’ The years of 1949-52 were especially fruitful for hired players. Most stopped by daily at Jake’s and I also had a great opportunity as each summer two or three players stayed at our house on Linden Ave. There are those of us who still value the insight on baseball Jake passed down. Men over 70 today still credit Jake as teaching us how to play the game “right.” Many who played for him later became coaches themselves. For

example: Phil Frerk and Tom Pryor are in the high school coaches Hall of Fames, Phil in Minnesota and Tom in California.

I believe Jake’s closest friend and barbershop regular, Glen Clark, was likewise one of the most knowledgeable baseball people to pass through Slayton.

Those two WWII veterans passed on many valuable life assets to many Slayton area boys.

Someone once wrote: “One never dies as long as someone living remembers (him or her).” Those of us over the age of 70 remember Jake, Glen, and the entire barbershop crew.

Leo Dangel’s poem, “The new lady barber at Ralph’s Barbershop,” is a good way to close!”

She’s in there all right, cutting hair alongside Ralph.

From California, they say, young, blond, and built.

A woman has no business being a barber, we said.

But soon we saw how Old Man Brunner walked back and forth past the barbershop, not going in until somebody was in Ralph’s chair and her’s was empty.

In a month we were all glancing into Ralph’s window, timing our haircuts.

One thing is dead certain in this town: we will never have topless dancers or massage parlors.

When strangers ask what we do for excitement, we can say we got a lady barber if your timing is right.

Newspaper pays final tribute to baseball-loving barber John Weber wrote this tribute to Milo Jacobsen in the Murray County Herald 60 years ago.

“Milo Jacobson – Slayton’s beloved “Jake the Barber” for the past several years - lost his last game a week ago. Jake died in the Veterans Hospital at Minneapolis.

This cheerful little man was one of the greatest sports enthusiasts, and the finest fellows, who was ever in business in Slayton. He probably did as much for the kids of the area as any other man in our short history – and he loved every minute of it.

Jake played baseball for Slayton right after his discharge at the end of Work War II, and he played a right good game

at third base. When time began to take its inevitable toll on the little fireball’s reflexes and endurances, he devoted his energies more and more to baseball for the youngsters of this area.

It was Jake who brought Little League baseball to Slayton, and it was Jake who organized the first Little League circuit in southern Minnesota. It was also Jake who coached the kids, begged for enough money to send them to tournaments, promoted the drive that bought them new uniforms and inspired others with a less complete interest in the game to help with myriad of coaching responsibilities inevitable when one is trying to run half a dozen ball teams.

Slayton already has missed Jake the Barber, ever since he first became ill over a year ago. He was in the Sioux Falls hospital for a time, recovering from a heart condition, but survived that and went back to work. His health however, went from bad to worse in the past few months and the cheerful sports-lover finally succumbed. He was buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday.

Jake will not be replaced in Slayton in our lifetime. We only hope that now that his is gone he will get some of the public credit that was never directed his way during his lifetime.”

Tube baits can hook spring crappies without a minnow

Waraju ruin recalls New Ulm’s first whiskey distillery

The chimney of the old Waraju Distillery and a historic plaque are reminders of one of New Ulm, Minnesota’s earliest enterprises. New Ulm was founded in 1854 by and for Germans, and the first of six breweries to satisfy their thirst was established in 1858. But it was a native of Italy, Henry A. Subilia, who constructed the town’s first whiskey distillery, which opened for business April 6, 1861.

The Waraju (a Dakota Indian word meaning “cottonwood”) Distillery was an impressive building for its time and place. The ruins still standing are a landmark in Harman Park, just below New Ulm’s impressive Hermann Monument. The distillery measured 72 by 46 feet at the base, and required about 200,000 bricks. It cost $8,000 for

construction and $2,000 for equipment, big money in those days.

The distillery was steam powered, and at peak performance processed 100 bushels of grain per day into whiskey, bitters, and punch extract.

Local farmers exchanged corn, barley, rye, and firewood for the finished “fire water” (as it was known by the Dakota Indians nearby).

Most of the distillery was destroyed by hostile Dakota Indians when they attacked New Ulm in August, 1862 at the onset of the U.S. - Dakota War of 1862.

The remains served as a temporary grain mill 1863-64, after which the Waraju went out of business. The ruins and surrounding four acres of land were sold for $800 in 1866. Subilia died in 1899 and is buried in the New Ulm City Cemetery.

Because of vandalism at the site the New Ulm City Council considered demolishing the chimney in 1960. But historic preservationists prevailed, and the area was fenced to save the structure.

A commemorative plaque was erected in 1992 by the Brown County Historical Society, and funded by Henry E. Brey, great-grandson of Henry Subilia.

Windom Riverfest has later June splash Windom’s Riverfest planning committee is excited about this year’s celebration, which runs Thursday through Sunday, June 25 - 28.

The 2015 Riverfest is scheduled later in June, in hopes of getting better weather, and has numerous new activities.

“The focus is more on art and music, much like last year,” said Michael Garcia, Windom Riverfest, Inc. president.

Festivities begin Thursday evening at the Business, Arts, & Recreation Center with the Miss Riverfest Pageant, and conclude with a fundraising pancake breakfast Sunday.

Sandwiched in between are a host of family-friendly Friday and Saturday attractions.

A juried art show and a craft/ flea market featuring local talent are scheduled for Saturday on The Courthouse Square.

Friday night family activities will be

located in the Windom Area High School parking lot. Riverfest will receive 100% of proceeds from a cookout. “Bob the Beachcomber” will have shows focused on preschool through elementary aged children.

Fireworks conclude the evening.

A regional baseball tournament, although not an official part of Riverfest, is planned Saturday. Turtle races are planned at The Square, with a fishing tournament dipping into Cottonwood Lake. New Saturday activities include 5K Color Run. A parade organized by Windom’s Women of Today rolls through town late Saturday afternoon. Food vendors will be selling their specialties throughout the day, and another cookout will be served on the Courthouse Square in the evening. Musical entertainment is planned at both small stage on The Square and a large stage at Island Park.

As I stood and watched the thermometer needle move toward 350, my wife opened the garage door and announced that the potatoes would be done boiling in 8 minutes. I turned up the heat and it quickly was hot enough to put the 20 crappie fillets into the oil. My wife was mashing the potatoes when I walked in with the fish. It was a wonderful evening meal that was the result of a mid-April crappie fishing trip that was notable because we didn’t use any live bait.

Instead of a crappie minnow threaded on to a recurve hook with the split shot and a pencil bobber, we caught our male pre-spawn crappies on tube baits.

We still used pencil bobbers to signal the crappie bites and we even put a little split shot on the line, but the business end of the rig featured a jig head surrounded by a tube bait. My son pitched a silver tube, my grandson offered a pink and white tube, and I had a tube with a black head and brown body. As we drifted and moved slowly with the electric trolling motor, we would cast toward the shore, let the tube sit still, then twitch the tube, let it sit still again, and then begin to slowly retrieve it.

When we would come upon an area that held crappies, the spring feeding frenzy was fast and furious. The second the tube bait would hit the water, there would be feeding activity and the pencil bobber would stand straight up and then disappear beneath the surface. All we had to do was lift our rod tips up at the same time we were reeling in line, and

we would have a crappie for our pail.

I have no idea what a tube baits looks like to a crappie, but I do know it must look good enough to eat, because one time I caught four crappie in a row on four casts.

I don’t fish bass, but guys who do were the first big users of tubes, and the best bass fisherman who make a living catching bass, have a whole box full of different sizes, length, and colors of tube baits. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that tube baits also come in a big variety of flavors. One of the favorite flavors is licorice or anise flavor. And, yes, fish can smell; matter of fact, some fish like bullheads and catfish find their meals with their smelling barbells (those feelers on their face).

Our tube fishing party was made up of my six year-old grandson, my son, and me, and that proves that tube baits can be handled by people of all ages. The whole secret of using tube baits is to keep them slowly moving so their skirt imparts an enticing wiggle that fish can’t ignore.

The Humble Heart Foundation is planning the Kaylie and Tyler Faith Jam Saturday, June 6, at Sleepy Eye’s Allison Park.

The event will raise money for high school scholarships in Kaylie and Tyler’s names. Kaylie Hogue passed suddenly on June 5, 2013 from a epileptic seizure.

Tyler Hadley, Kaylie’s brother, died March 7, 2014 in a car accident, which also claimed the lives of John Mangen, Payton Adams, and Caleb Quesenberry.

After Kaylie passed away her family wanted to hold a 5k in her honor as she had just completed her first race in 2012. In 2014 the family decided to add Tyler and the three boys who lost their lives with him, to the cause.
