CAMPING WITH A TOUCH OF

“Boondocking” off the grid, pitching up a tent, and hooking up an RV to a campsite are just a few ways that people choose to experience camping outdoors.

The stress of setting up a campsite or the hefty price attached to buying equipment are contributing factors to why people opt-out of camping entirely. Plum Creek Park Ranger Adam Kletscher is thrilled to provide a better alternative to draw in more visitors to stay at the park this camping season.

Located just west of Walnut Grove, the six new camper cabins at Plum Creek Park offer a new experience to visitors who don’t necessarily feel like “roughing it.” Consider the encounter to be somewhere between “camping” and “glamping,” as the cabins are perfect for visitors who want to immerse themselves in nature while still having a roof over their head at night.

“We thought, what can we do to provide for campers right away,” Kletscher said. “These camper cabins have been this new rage in the camping industry it seems and we have a lot of people that come through Walnut Grove, especially for the Wilder Pageant, and not everyone wants to haul their RV around and not everyone necessarily wants to tent.”

The camper cabins were well thought out in hopes to add a feature to the park that would set them apart from others in the area.

The cabins are 14 x 26, with a fourfoot deck that has a covered porch. The interior provides an open layout floor plan that can sleep up to six on the two double beds with twin bunks up above.

Built by local carpenter Trent Baker, the cabins are equipped with electricity, a heater, and an A.C. unit. Although campers will not have running water in their cabin, they are within 400 feet of the nearest restroom.

The camper cabins have been a process to build, to say the least, as the master plan to build began in 2016 as Kletscher began the discussion with his boss, his former manager and the park trails commission. The group bounced ideas back and forth about the future of the park and what improvements could be made. They then put the plan in writing, laying out where they saw themselves going and how it could benefit the community.

“That (master plan) made our park deemed reasonably significant in the eyes of the Greater Minnesota Parks and Trails Commission,” Kletscher said.

The commission was established to provide recommendations to the state legislature for where grant money for

state legacy parks and trail funds should be dispersed.

Before being deemed reasonably

significant, Plum Creek Park purchased some additional land that surrounded the park to add on some sites which led them to the idea of installing camper cabins.

The park made the move to apply for grant funding and received a grant of $317,300 in 2017 and $30,000 in 2018.

The camper cabins weren’t completed until 2020, after quite the waiting period for the funding to arrive.

“We had to wait a year for the grant to be approved and then you don’t get the funding until the following year,” Kletscher said. “It takes time for the grant process to work itself out.”

After building the cabins, they still had additional funds to use to expand the park.

They planted 33 different trees of 17 different varieties and native prairie grass was seeded around the cabins.

“We added a self-rental kayak station, we put two new vault toilets in, updated our primitive camping sites, put in a 10-foot wide concrete trail connecting the upper-parts and lower-parts and updated some services for the overnight campers,” Kletscher said.

Opening in 1969, Plum Creek

Park spans across 215 acres and provides visitors with camping, hiking, a disc-golf frisbee course, playgrounds, picnic areas, access to Lake Laura to fish and swim and a selfguided walking tour to identify tree species.

Kletscher has been employed at Plum Creek Park since he was a college freshman in 2003 when the park was looking for seasonal help.

Following his boss’s retirement in 2017, he stepped up to fill the role that spring.

In addition to being the head park ranger, Kletscher teaches Kindergarten in Walnut Grove.

He heads out to the park once school is out for the day and is full-time during school’s summer break.

Cowboy legends pale next to violent exploits of Inkpaduta From Above The Fold: It is our honor to once again be bringing our readers in the region the writings of the late Bill Bolin, an iconic and beloved historian, educator and coach in Tracy for many decades.

Bolin passed away October 15, 2017, and he is missed by so many to this day. Bill started writing for the Sailor in 1997 in hopes of passing down many of his experiences, especially to his children, grandchildren and the many students he encountered in Tracy Area High School from his student teaching in 1956-57 until his final retirement in 2010.

The Tracy Area Headlight Herald, with permission from Bill’s family, is reproducing his popular columns in this Sailor, as well as in editions yet to come:

No man in northwest Iowa or southwest Minnesota ever inspired more incredible stories, controversy, fear, contradiction or tall tales than Inkpaduta.

He was larger than life, and if even half of his violent exploits were proven true, Al Capone, John Dillinger and Jesse James would pale in comparison. Even Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill may have been lesser men!

On March 28th of 1999, 142 years to the day of Inkpaduta’s camping at the sacred Pipestone quarries, Richard “Whirlwind” Bryan and the Pipestone County Historical Society brought an exhibit of paintings chronicling The Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857 to the Pipestone Performing Arts Center. Mike Koppert, Gardner Cabin Site Historian was also present to address a nice crowd.

His talk Understanding the Spirit Lake Massacre was very interesting. I no more than got home before I began to research my material on Inkpaduta.

What follows, hopefully, will shed some light to Sailor readers on Inkpaduta, a historical giant to those of us living in southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and eastern South Dakota.

According to Mike Diedrick, Inkpaduta was born in 1815, other sources however indicate an earlier date, possibly even 1800. His death was likely 1882 in Manitoba, Canada. Charles Eastman reported that Inkpaduta was the father of at least 12 sons and several daughters.

All of these sons were noted as “the most ferocious and daring warriors.”

Peggy Larson in Minnesota History wrote: “Inkpaduta was born in the Wahpekute Santee Band, one that Zebulon Pike in 180506 and Stephen Long in 1823, both claimed to have had a bad reputation. Many of their tribe was said to have been made up of individuals expelled from other bands.”

She quickly adds that her research indicates that this information may have come from the “uneducated but intelligent” Joseph Renville, a mixed-

It was at this point that Inkpaduta’s followers found the Des Moines River Valley, whose headwaters are Lake Shetek in Murray County.

During the long and bitter winter of 1856-57, much like that of southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and eastern South Dakota in 1996-97, Inkpaduta and his people were hunting elk near Smithland, Iowa. One of his men evidently killed a white man’s dog after it had bitten him. The white severely

Inkapaduta’s father was Wamdisapa (Black Eagle). He had a small village in what is now Blue Earth County.

Tasagi, a relative of Inkpaduta’s father who lived along the Cannon River, near present Faribault, soon developed a keen rivalry with Wamdisapa. Around 1839 Tasagi was killed by his own band.

However, some, like Mark Diedrick say Wamdisapa killed Tasagi, others only implicate Wamdisapa and Inkpaduta in the murder. The Wahpekute (Shooters in the Leaves) in southeast Minnesota soon thereafter split into several factions and became only loosely knit. One who rose to power was Sintominaduta (Red All Over), whom most writers claim, was undoubtedly Inkpaduta’s brother.

Mike Koppert remarked that the Wahpekute were seriously decimated by smallpox in the late 1830’s. Both Inkpaduta and his brother survived.

Inkpaduta was left with terrible scars and pox marks deeply pitting his face that accompanied him for life. It was no doubt the same smallpox epidemic that wiped out most of the Dakota, maybe 80%, who lived near the “Grand Lisere” trading post in the Great Oasis Lakes area in Lowville Township in Murray County.

Bird Central Famous for Miles Around…

We know that the Joseph LaFrambois post closed in 1838 due largely to the curse of smallpox.

Even though the U.S. government had removed the Sac and Fox from this area of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa and the land became open to the Dakota for hunting, it was somewhat moot, as smallpox had dwindled the divided Wahpekute from near 8,000 to hardly 1,000. The 1838 Nicollet Expedition exploring southwest Minnesota met with Black Eagle in the late fall and reported that he had only 14 warriors still alive.

beat the Indian. Later a posse stormed Inkpaduta’s camp and took their guns.

According to Joseph Taylor in the North Dakota Historical Quarterly of October 1929-July 1930, through his interpreter, Inkpaduta’s speech was somewhat as follows: “With the deep snow, the cold winter, an ice bound plain, shortage of provisions in the camp; the taking of our guns will mean the

burial of our children, our wives, and even the men themselves in the falling snow.”

Paraphrasing Mark Diedrick in “Famous Chiefs” the Dakota had no choice but to give up their guns; their lodges were destroyed. Inkpaduta left with his band of nearly 70, (30 warriors) in a northerly direction. After another racial dispute at Peterson, Iowa where

white settlers refused them food, he and his followers took what guns they could find and killed the livestock. Indpaduta and his men are now angry and sullen.

They move on toward the Lake Okoboji settlement and hence commence on a killing spree of some 30 plus white settlers near Spirit Lake and Springfield (Jackson). These attacks began on March 8, 1857 near present Arnolds Park, Iowa.

Abbie Gardner, the 13-year-old daughter of Rowland and Francis Gardner was taken hostage along with 3 married women. Her parents, sister, sisters’ 2 children, brother, and family friend were all killed, as were several other families in the Spirit Lake area. The band then traveled north into Minnesota and made campsite at Heron Lake. In the chapter “Heron Lake” in the book The Market Hunter by David and Jim Kimball, it is written: “When the first settlers came, a giant solitary Elm, known as the lone tree rose over the barren prairie near the lake, a landmark to countless generations of Indian hunters.

They slept under it’s shade in the heat of the day. Their lookouts sat in its branches, and it is said that Inkpaduta’s band of warriors camped under the tree in 1857 during their last stand against the encroaching civilization that would send their people to the reservation.”

No doubt Inkpaduta left it’s shores to launch his wrath on white settlers at Springfield (Jackson). It is also alleged that he fled from his pursuers by crossing the bar on the south lake between what are now Johnson Point and Pelican Point.

On March 25th, 1857 they attacked Springfield and 7 more were killed.

The band returned to Heron Lake and just missed an encounter with the 10th Regiment U.S. Infantry. Some writers claim the two parties were within yards of one another at the Heron Lake site. The military returned unsuccessfully to Fort Ridgely along the Minnesota River and Inkpaduta’s band traveled west to the Pipestone quarries. From Pipestone they reportedly crossed the Big Sioux River near present Flandreau and then moved on to Lake Madison, just southeast of the present city of Madison.

The civilian pursuers were no more successful than the 10th Regiment. The

weather conditions of March 1857 being so severe that survival for those in pursuit of Inkpaduta became more pressing than the possibility of locating his band. In Abbie Gardner Sharp’s book, The Spirit Lake Massacre, the description of the ordeal is as such: “Our men suffered very much, owing to the severe weather change and snowstorm.

We have 14 men badly frozen, and two lost.

So severe was the weather that those who were picked up and got in were so frozen and exhausted that they were crawling on their hands and knees when found, and three or four of them had lost their minds, becoming perfectly deranged, and knew no one.”

In the summer of 1862 Inkpaduta’s band is said to have camped south of Lake Benton and traveled to the Upper Agency hoping to gain food and annuity payments but were turned away. It seems certain that Inkpaduta played no part in the Dakota Conflict of late August and early September of 1862 in southwest Minnesota. However, it may be quite true that his success at Spirit Lake and Springfield (Jackson) may well have helped promote the eastern Dakota to go to war under Little Crow.

Mike Koppert said in his talk at Pipestone that “one of the biggest misconceptions that people have is that the Indians did this because they hated whites.”

Mike believes that there were no winners and only losers on both sides.

He indicated that incidents and problems had began nearly three years prior in the area and that insensitive whites like whiskey trader and horse thief, Henry Lott, must bear some of the burden for the tragic events. Lott was guilty of killing Red All Over’s mother, wife and several children and escaped without being brought to justice.

To make matters even worse Inkpaduta saw that his brother’s head had been nailed to a pole in public display.

Mike Diedrich wrote: that “Inkapaduta’s death ended his 20+ years of hostilities with the whites, and also his outlaw scapegoat status among the Eastern Dakota.”

The famous artist Charles Eastman records that Inkpaduta “commanded a very high respect from all of the tribes.”

Also, the very revered Ogalala medicine man, Black Elk, while telling of the great Sioux victory at the Greasy Grass (Little Big Horn), in late June of 1876 (see note!) said: “Great men were there: Crazy Horse and Big Road of the Ogalalas; Sitting Bull and Gall and Black Moon and Crow King of the Hunkpapas; Spotted Elk of the Sans Arc; the younger Hump and Fast Bull of the Minneconjous; Dull Knife and Ice Bear of the Shyelas; Inkpaduta with the Santees and Yanktonais. Great men were there with all those people and horses. Hetchetu aloh! (It is so indeed!)”

Note: Reports of Custer’s defeat and death were made public to many Americans on July 4, 1876. The 100th Centennial of American Independence.

The timing of which, no doubt, helped cast a tremendous cloud of resentment upon the plains Indians that would dominate our (white) thinking for at least another century. David Miller in Echoes of the Little Big Horn writes that a Teton named Iron Hail and Sitting Bull’s nephew, White Bull saw Inkpaduta’s son with the “Long Hair’s” (General George A. Custer) horse.

At the corner of Mill and First streets in Currie sits a twostory brick-and-mortar that has been a community emblem since 1901.

Today, the historic 120-year old space is occupied by Ramona Lindberg’s retail store that ironically goes by the name of Mo’ Than Antiques.

Before the antique shop filled the space, the Mill Street building had been occupied by several stores, each bringing a personal touch to the town.

The structure was built in 1901 after Fred C. Meyer and Edward Berreau launched the Currie Hardware and

Furniture Company, offering hardware items, mortuary services, caskets, a hearse and Ford Model T’s.

After its invention in 1908, the Model T’s were stored on the upper level.

The vehicles were driven through a wide door on the First Street side of the building and hauled into a freight elevator to the second floor.

According to Lindberg, there is suspicion that the hardware shop could have offered more to shoppers than just retail after finding an entrance that led to a basement.

“We (Currie residents) found evidence of a doorway on the south side out

on the front, and believe there was a barbershop at one point,” Lindberg said.

The almost forty-year run of the Currie Hardware and Furniture Shop came to an end in 1937 following a tragic car accident that took Meyer’s life while he was visiting his kids in California.

The crash marked the first automobile

accident to take place on the two-monthold, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Three were killed and several injured in the accident that was caused by the lack of visibility of the white lane markers on a rainy evening.

The San Francisco Examiner reported that the “tire marks of automobiles were mistaken for the markers on the glistening wet pavement and the real lines themselves were merged in obscurity.”

The accident that ended the life of Meyer resulted in the liquidation of the Currie Hardware and Furniture Shop and an earlier-than-planned retirement for Mr. Berreau.

The building stayed vacant until the mid-1940s when it “was divided in half,” Lindberg said. “The south half became Engel’s Drug Store and the north half became Gambles Hardware Store.”

Engel’s Drug Store was notorious for its soda fountain, an innovation that stems back to 1850. Americans would go to their local drug store where they were given a prescription in the form of a drink. This medicinal remedy included ingredients like cocaine, coffee, and herbs, marking the beginning of the soda-fountaindrug-store connection. As time progressed, ingredients like syrup and carbon dioxide were added.

Drugs were removed from the drink after the congressional ban of opioids and cocaine took effect in 1914, followed by the 18th Amendment of 1918 that

prohibited the sale, manufacture and transport of liquor.

This crackdown on alcohol and drugs created a social void among Americans that needed to be replenished.

That thirst for interaction and entertainment combined with the closing of bars delivered a huge business opportunity and by 1950, almost every drug store across the country, including Engel’s, had a soda fountain.

In 1962, A. V. Engel sold the business after an 18 year run in the south half of the building. The open vacancy gave the new Owner of Gambles Hardware Store Don Cummiskey the green light to purchase the space.

After Cummiskey bought out the building, the dividing wall was removed, creating the open floor plan that it holds today.

The structural change from Cummiskey wasn’t the first nor will it be the last. Every occupant has left their personal touch and after purchasing the building in Jan. 2020, Lindberg chose to opt-out of refurbishing the original floors and upgraded to flooring that is new and contemporary. A bathroom was added to the main level by Lindberg and all of the woodwork that is on the doorways and in the bathroom originates from the upper level that she stripped.

Exterior improvements were also made which led her to discover even more historical context after a worker removed a piece of steel from the building in April 2021.

Located on the back of the piece were the words, “J. Torrance & Son Lacrosse Wis.” After entering that name at the La Crosse Public Library Archives, it was discovered that John Torrance and Son Foundry was a company founded in 1876. They offered

repair work services on river barges and steamboats and later transitioned to construction and manufacturing with financial records dating from 1887 to 1933. This means that it’s highly likely Lindberg’s renovations helped identify the construction company that built the Currie landmark, 120 years later.

Now open for the season, Mo’ Than Antiques brings something unique that the building has never seen before, showcasing items like home decor, women’s boutique clothing and antiques from 50 local vendors.

“I had a vision of a store like this but I never thought I’d be running it,” Lindberg said. “The pieces just fell together. There was this beautiful building, why not use it?”

Lac qui Parle Mission The Chippewa County Historical Society’s Lac qui Parle Mission is located 6 miles north of Montevideo on Highway 59 and 2.2 miles west on Chippewa County Highway 13. Hours for the 2021 tourism season for the Lac qui Parle Mission began on April 25, 2021 and are 8 a.m.-8 p.m., MondaySunday, through Labor Day weekend.

The Lac qui Parle Mission overlooks the beautiful “Lake that speaks.”

The Dakota name for this lake was Mdaeyaydan, “Lake that connects”.

The Mission was begun in 1835 by the Congregational and Presbyterian ministries. The original church building was built in 1840 and is known as the first church and school erected in the Minnesota River Valley. The present wooden chapel, a Works Projects Administration building, stands on the site of the original adobe structure.

New exhibit panels were installed in 2016. The panels are entitled: The Holy House, Kinship, The Dakota Language, Learning and Teaching, and Dakota Clergy: A Legacy. Come hear the church bell ring, echoing the sound

of the original, traditionally known as the first church bell in Minnesota.

Less than a mile north of the Mission is site of Fort Renville built by Joseph Renville a prominent force behind the Lac qui Parle Mission and an explorer who once led Zebulon Pike to the Upper Mississippi.

The Mission is proud of its many “Minnesota firsts” such as the first English school held in the Minnesota River Valley, the first corn mill, the first woven cloth, and the first church bell that tolled. At this historic site the Dakota alphabet was formulated, a spelling book in Dakota was written, and the Bible was translated into Dakota. The well-known tune, “Lac qui Parle” for the hymn ‘Many and Great, Oh God, Are Thy Things’, was composed here.

From Minneota to Marshall, Ghent to Garvin, the sprawling exhibit shines an important post-World War II spotlight on the highs and lows of Lyon County cities.

“The exhibit itself is Lyon County History from post-World War II to today, so it’s a little bit more contemporary history,” said Lyon County Museum Executive Director Jennifer Andries. “We tried to make sure that each of the towns in Lyon County is somewhere featured in the exhibit. We’ve got a lot of great feedback from people coming through.”

The exhibit is broken up into storytelling sections, starting with the end of the war, which is depicted in numerous ways, including a video that is broadcast on a large wall above the staircase that shows headlines from area newspapers and historic audio recordings.

“Inside, there’s a section on SMSU (Southwest Minnesota State University) history, agriculture, community, flooding, the Tracy tornado — there’s a section on the entertainment industry,” said Andries.

The Lyon County Historical Society was named as a 2018 recipient of a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant in the amount of $265,585 for the fabrication and installation of the Lyon County Museum’s 2nd floor exhibit gallery, “Making Lyon County Home.”

The grants are awarded annually by the Minnesota Historical Society and are made possible by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund of the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment. The process on the local level actually began with grant writing in 2015.

“For exhibits, you have to go through phases, so it starts with research and an exhibit plan,” Andries said. “You have to have your research in place first before you put your plan together. Then it’s the fabrication and installation. We’re finally at the end where we have the exhibit completed.”

The grant award is the culmination of more than three years of planning, designing and applying for grants. It began with developing an overall theme for the entire museum: “Making Lyon County Home.” The next steps included the development of a research project, establishing a lighting plan, conducting

oral histories, and creating an exhibit plan. The majority of these projects were funded by the small grants (less than $10,000) program of the MN legacy grants.

The cost of the “Making Lyon County Home” project was just over $400,000, and a local match of over $144,000 was a key component for the success of the Legacy Grant application, according to a news release from the Lyon County Historical Society. The local match came from contributions from Lyon County, all 11 municipalities in the county, several townships, and many of the major businesses in the county, as well as numerous individual contributions. A colorful “Donation Tree” near the entrance of the exhibit highlights all the towns, businesses, organizations and individuals who made some kind of donation to the exhibit.

“The county was very generous, and we went to all the cities and they all contributed, kind of proportion to their population,” said Andries. “It was nice to get each city to contribute something. The US Bank Foundation was also very generous.”

The museum in 2012 moved into what used to be the Marshall Public Library, and the second floor that is now home to “Making Lyon County Home” was once home to the library’s children’s department and some office space. The renovation includes new flooring and new lighting, and the main entrance has been modified as well.

Andries said the museum reached out to all cities for items and information that could be used in the exhibits.

The north wall of the second floor of the museum features large images that, combined with video technology, tell the story of area towns. Through the technology old photos are blended with new photos of the same area to show how much things have changed over the decades. The Minneapolis company Museology was the lead contractor for the exhibit. Museology specializes in creating a wide array of exhibit features; Western Printing in Marshall provided most of the signage; Amiret Electric installed all the lighting; and Floor to Ceiling in Marshall did the flooring.

The second-floor also includes a more light-hearted exhibit featuring Tracy native and nationally-renowned songwriter Dennis Morgan, who visited the museum last summer. Visitors can actually sing karaoke to a few of Morgan’s country hits, accompanied by country singer Barbara Mandrell, who can be seen in a background video performing songs.

The gallery, which also features interviews from farmers about the farm crisis in the 1980s, includes some items that are on loan from Wheels Across the Prairie.

“We also have space where we can add more,” Andries said. “It’s finished, but we can still add to it — there’s still plenty of room to add more stories, photographs and artifacts. That’s part of why we have the stations, so we can gather more information and include it.”

The Minnesota Historical Society awarded a total of $4,849,057 to organizations statewide. LCHS was one of 42 organizations in 27 counties to receive a grant this round.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Clean

Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water, and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.

The Jan. 11 opening of the exhibit was far from the museum’s plans. Originally, the second floor was to debut last year during the celebration of Lyon County’s 150th anniversary. Those best-laid plans, however, were wiped out because of the pandemic.

“When we were planning this … and opening the exhibit was going to be connected with the 150th anniversary of Lyon County,” Andries said. “We wanted to open the exhibit, celebrate the anniversary — then we got behind in schedule on the exhibit, and then COVID. We had to adapt and do things differently. We were able to celebrate the anniversary last year by having the fly-over and doing some other things, but we weren’t able to have a grand opening for the second floor. It would’ve been nice to have a ribbon cutting and grand opening.”

There is no charge to visit the second floor exhibits. Museum hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon-4 p.m. on Saturday. The museum is closed on Sunday.

“We tried to make this an exhibit for all ages,” Andries said.
