Good fishing spots? You bet!

The trees were budding, the water was rushing over the Lime Lake barrier, and the bullheads were bumping into each other in Lime Creek. Spring shore fishing was on and I took my spot next to a lady who had a landing net on the ground. On the second flip of my silver spoon, northern pike noticed it traveling by and decided to eat it. The lady let me use her landing net and we ate northern pike the next day. The place was Lime Lake Park at Avoca.

It was a hot day in late July when a friend and I decided to give walleye fishing a whirl on Lake Shetek. After some fruitless trolling, we entered into a small backwater just north of a spot called Teepeeotah. For some unknown reason, I decided to make a cast with a chartreuse silver spoon. The spoon flew off the end of my rod toward a group of very tall cattails. I stopped the spoon in mid-flight and it dropped with a splash right on the edge of the cattails.

To avoid snagging the lake bottom, I gave the end of my rod a quick snap.

The quick snap was greeted with a really heavy pull, and in just a few moments the heavy pull began to pull and swim away. The walleye measured 22 inches and weighed in at somewhere near 4 lbs.

mid- summer, a friend and I decided to give Current Lake a try.

There was no one at the park or on the lake when we arrived. We trolled the shore line on the east side of the lake, in and out and around an island, and the results were a nice summer ride on the lake. Then we moved to the west side of the lake, and traveled in front of a sandy beach. I hooked a section of old barb wire fence from off the bottom of the lake, and then I had a nice walleye take my Countdown Rapala. Swenson County Park is one of the very well maintained Murray County Parks. It is great for picnics and reunions, and it also comes with good fishing too.

Perch. Lots of perch. Nice fat, good eating perch. We caught perch on tube baits as fast as we could reel them in and flip the tubes out again. These perch can be caught by shore fishing or from a boat. The lake that is home to these perch has a Murray County Park on its west end and another on the east end. Each park features sparkling clean lavatories, wonderful drinking water,

and a generous amount of very nicely kept grounds.

Lake Sarah county parks have entrances off of U.S. Hwy. 59 north of Slayton or off Murray County Hwy. 30 located 2 miles west of Slayton.

Fishing outlook positive in region

Chuck Obler, fishing technician for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said there will come a time in the next few years that the walleye won’t be biting much on Lake Sarah. But for now, he said, Sarah should once again be the place to go in southwest Minnesota for trophy walleye.

“They’re there again,” Obler said. “We had a pile of fish over 8 pounds again — the biggest was 14, of course, that’s with eggs in them. There are a tremendous number of 8- to 12-pounders and there are still a lot of 17- to 18-inchers out there.”

Obler said Sarah got hit hard once again this winter, but that the lake is holding up to the pressure. But “a lot of those 8- to 12-pounders aren’t going to live a whole lot longer, so there could be a void in the next year or two,” Obler said. “But there are a whole lot of little fish coming up, too.”

He also said there are “scads of perch” in Sarah, with one net bringing up about 2,000, many in the 9- to 10inch range this spring.

“That’s a great place to go for perch if you’re looking for pan fish,” he said.

Obler also said neighboring Lake Shetek has quite a few walleye in the 14- to 16-inch range. He predicted Lake Yankton in Balaton will have a “so-so” year for all species generally found in that lake.

At Clear Lake, Obler said there is so much food in the lake it’s difficult to get fish to bite, even though it had the highest count ever for walleyes last summer.

“If you can get them to bite, you’re a better fisherman than I am,” Obler said. “I think it’s just so full of fathead minnows. I tried it this past winter and there were some 8- to 9-pound northerns in there that I threw back.”

If you’re looking for northerns Obler said, Lime Lake in Avoca might be the place to go. He said Island and Rock lakes are “sleepers” for northerns this year. Rock Lake, he said, got hit hard this winter, but said there are a lot of fish coming up in the 10- to 11-inch range.

If you’re looking for a place to bring the kids, Obler also said Swift Lake just outside of Tracy has been stocked with about 150 crappies, some of which are keeper size already. Perch and bluegills should also be available in Swift Lake.

“I’m not sure there’s a whole lot left in there,” he said.

“It got hit pretty hard this winter.”

According to Windom Area Fisheries, while many of the lakes and wetlands located in the Prairie Pothole Region are susceptible to winterkill, especially when water levels are low and ice remains snow covered for long periods of time, the winter of 2016-2017 was short and mild, with little snow and a mid-February warm up that opened up parts of most lakes. With three growing seasons gone by since the harsh 2013-14 winter that saw extensive winterkill in many area lakes, anglers should once again enjoy a strong fishing season.

Outlook for area lakes:

Walleye Lake Sarah (1,176 acres) Murray County: Lake Sarah is a perennial Walleye hotspot, being one of two lakes in the Windom area that has a self-sustaining Walleye population. Although the 2014 Walleye catch rate of 10.3 per gill net was much lower than catch rates in two previous surveys (60.5 and 45.5 per gill net in 2006 and 2010, respectively), Lake Sarah boasts one of the best Walleye populations in the area. The Lake Sarah Walleye bite was on fire for much of this last winter, with 100 to 200 houses out there on several weekends. During egg take operations during the spring of 2016, many 25+ inch Walleye were observed, with fish up to 14 pounds being captured. During fall electrofishing in 2016, many adult Walleye around 18 inches were observed, which should provide good table fare. Natural reproduction checks have indicated that the population will continue to be strong, as

the electrofishing catch rate of young-of-year Walleyes has exceeded 149.5/hour in 6 out of 7 years since 2010. Expect the best Walleye fishing to be from mid-May to mid-June, and then again in the fall. If the Walleye don’t cooperate you can try catching Yellow Perch, which are presently very abundant in Lake Sarah. Make sure to plan ahead, as this Walleye “factory” will likely be busy on the opener.

Lake Benton (2,857 acres) Lincoln County: One of the bigger waters in the Windom fisheries management area, Lake Benton is poised to provide quality Walleye fishing this season.

The 2015 population assessment indicated an abundant Walleye population at 23.0/gill net, down slightly from the 2013 catch rate of 34.0/gill net, but still well above average for this lake type.

A wide range of sizes were present, as lengths ranged from 9 to 24 inches, with the majority of the fish being between 12 and 13 inches.

With another growing season completed, this abundant year class should be reaching 15-16 inches. Although Walleye over 25 inches were not sampled, the opportunity for hooking into a trophy is not out of the question. It is likely that many of the locals won’t have to travel far to find good Walleye fishing with Lake Benton in their backyard. A slip bobber with a leech off rocky points and shorelines early in the season should put a few Walleyes on the stringer. Expect accesses to be busy, but the size of the lake should give anglers plenty of room to pursue the wily Walleye.

Lake Shetek (3,462 acres) Murray County: Lake Shetek is one of the largest water bodies in the Windom area, consistently producing quality Walleye fishing. The trend should continue into the spring as Shetek has a decent Walleye population as indicted by a catch rate of 7.3/gill net in 2016. Lengths of Walleye averaged 12.7 inches; however, Walleye larger than 15 inches were present with fish up to 26.0 inches. A good Walleye bite was reported on Lake Shetek this past winter, with anglers catching good numbers of 15 inch fish. Prey fish abundance (Yellow Perch and Bullhead) is relatively low in Lake Shetek, so

Walleyes should be actively searching for their next meal. If Walleye action is slow, anglers can try their luck in catching Northern Pike. The size of Northern Pike may not be large, but reports suggest that the Northern Pike population is on the upswing in Lake Shetek, likely the result of stocking and recent efforts to reestablish historic spawning runs. Black and White Crappies are also present in Lake Shetek, albeit in average abundance, but action could be fast if you locate

a downed tree that they are hanging around.

Although fishing pressure may be high on the opener, Shetek’s vast surface area should provide plenty of options.

Round Lake (929 acres) Jackson County: This ever popular Walleye lake may be poised to give up some fish on the 2017 opener. In the 2015 survey, Walleye were captured at a rate of 16.3 per gill net, up from the 2013 catch rate of 7.7 per gill net. Many of the Walleye sampled

were 12 to 15 inches, so some may be too small, but there should be a few that are approaching a harvestable size. If Walleye aren’t biting, the Crappie population has really exploded in Round Lake, and should provide another angling opportunity. ‘Poor farm’ preserves rich legacy

The sprawling two-story building that’s home to the Redwood County Museum, was originally built in 1908 as a “poor farm.”

“There are over 30 rooms in the museum,” explains Director Patricia Lubeck. “And we have a pioneer school and jail on the grounds here, too.”

This museum takes on a different tone than most other museums in that Lubeck encourages visitors to get the “feel” of some of the displays.

“I allow ‘hands on’ here,” she says.

“The kids especially love to pick things up and hold them. I think they learn more about historical things that way. ” Lubeck enjoys seeing the smiles on the faces of the children as they learn about life in the county from years gone by.

“When it’s time for them to leave a lot of them don’t want to go,” she said. “I love children and I really enjoy it when I see how much they like it here.”

The children especially enjoy the 1881 one-room pioneer schoolhouse on the grounds, as well as the Redwood County lock-up jail next to it that was built in 1865, the same year the Civil War ended and Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

“They get a kick out trying on the oldtime handcuffs and leg-irons we have in the jail,” Lubeck said. “I also let them play the piano and the pump organ as long as they are respectful and not rough.

And I let them touch the things we have in the general store.”

Lubeck is also the author of the book, “Murder, Mystery and Mayhem in Minnesota,” focuses on early crimes in rural Redwood County.

A new exhibit at the museum this year, “Crime and Punishment in Redwood County” features some of the weapons used in some of the early crimes. The actual ax that William Kleeman used to kill his wife and five small children 100 years ago while they slept is among the objects.

“A lot of people ask about the ax,” says Lubeck. “The Kleeman ax murders are one of the stories in the book, as well as one of the biggest arson cases in Redwood County, a racially charged murder in 1921, a bank robbery, and much more.”

Also new this year at the museum is a display by author and paranormal investigator Adrian Lee called “The Mysterious and Haunting History of Murder Ghosts and Fortune Telling in Redwood County.” The exhibit will

include murder artifacts, evidence, ghost hunting and other items.

There is much to see at the museum.

“The animal and wildlife exhibits are always a big hit with visitors,” said Lubeck. “And the Indian artifacts always draw a lot of attention.”

Other museum displays include an early 1900’s kitchen, turn-of-the century bedroom and parlor scenes; a general store, physician’s office, military room, toy room, music room and much more.

counties to have a poor farm, with the 160 acres of land that included a nineroom house in 1884. Poor farms became common in the state as a place to place less fortunate people unable to care for themselves.

But five years later, the county sold the farm. It wasn’t until 1908 that Redwood County again had a poor farm, building a large Spanish-style home.

“It was regarded as the most beautiful poor farm in the state,” said Lubeck.

County poor farms were built to provide “indoor relief” care for the needy. Those living and working at the poor farms were known as “inmates” and included the very poor, the elderly,

Round Lake (30 per day bag limit). White Bass (some are approaching 16 inches) are feisty fighters and are good to eat.

Double Lake (246 acres) Cottonwood County: Double Lake could be busy on the 2017 Walleye opener, as anglers had pretty good success out there last spring. The 2015 fish population assessment provided further evidence that Double Lake may be a good destination for Walleye anglers, as Walleye were captured at a rate of 20.0 per gill net. The majority of the Walleyes present were between 12 and 15 inches during summer of 2015, so a couple of years of growth should make them a quality size.

This lake should definitely be on your radar for the 2017 opener.

Talcot Lake (678 acres) Cottonwood County: Talcot Lake has given up a lot of Walleye in the last year, with good bites being reported in the fall of 2016 and early in the spring of 2017 before the Walleye season closed. The 2016 survey indicated an abundant Walleye population, as the gill net catch rate was 20.7 per gill net. Lengths of Walleye were nice averaging 15.7 inches. Talcot Lake could be busy on the opener given the recent success that anglers have had out there.

Clear Lake (68 acres) Lyon County: Although an extremely small lake, Clear Lake has a highly abundant Walleye population (94/ gill net in 2016) that should provide good angling this spring. In 2016 Walleyes ranged from 10 to 23 inches in length and averaged 15.2 inches.

There are a lot of Walleye in this small lake; however, the trick may be getting the Walleyes to bite, as evidence suggests that the lake has an extremely abundant Fathead Minnow population, which is likely keeping the Walleyes appetite satisfied. Additionally, ice anglers tried their luck out there this last winter, and had limited success. Eventually the bite has to turn on at Clear Lake, and when it does, you better be holding on to your rod and reel!

Mountain Lake (241 acres) Cottonwood County: More so known as a Bluegill/ Largemouth Bass lake, Mountain Lake had a sneaky good Walleye catch rate during the 2014 population assessment (21.0 per gill net). You’re

He was fishing Lake Shetek. likely not going to catch a trophy out there, but getting Walleye for the frying pan isn’t out of the question, as most of the Walleyes sampled were 13 to 16 inches long. One 24.7 inch Walleye was sampled so the possibility for a larger fish does exist. If the Walleyes aren’t cooperating, Mountain Lake has good Bluegill and Largemouth Bass (catch and release from May 14 to May 27) populations that could provide some steady action. Additionally, Northern Pike are present in Mountain Lake, with large fish present.

Loon Lake (679 acres) Jackson County: Over three years removed from a partial winterkill that occurred in Loon Lake, the Walleye fishing is the best it has been in decades. Anglers reported excellent Walleye fishing throughout the 2016 fishing season, as the abundant post winterkill year class (2014) grew to a length that was harvestable for many anglers. Likewise the survey in 2016 indicated a very abundant year class as the gill net catch of 30.3 was the highest catch ever recorded on

Loon Lake. Lengths of walleye ranged from 8.4 to 26.8 inches and averaged 14.3 inches, with the majority of Walleye being between 13 and 17 inches. The good fishing should continue into 2017, thus, expect the lake to be busy when the 2017 opener rolls around. Nearly 500 adult northern pike were stocked in Loon Lake during the winter of 2016-2017, so they should provide an additional angling opportunity if the Walleye aren’t cooperating.

East Stay Lake (224 acres) Lincoln County: Walleye are abundant in East Stay Lake as they were captured at a rate of 43.0 per gill net. In addition to the Walleye being very abundant, the fish were an excellent size, with most of them being between 16 to 21 inches, and averaging 18 inches. Anglers reported a tough bite on Stay Lake this last winter, which could be a result of the abundant Perch and Bullhead populations, which likely keep the Walleye well fed. Nonetheless, Stay Lake is worth a try simply because it is loaded with nice Walleye.

Secondary Options for Walleye Rock Lake (379 acres) Lyon County: 6.0 Walleye per gill net; average length of 16 inches in 2014. Hot Walleye bite for a couple of weeks this last winter.

Northern Pike Lime Lake (316 acres) Murray County: Lime

Lake is one of the more consistent Northern Pike fisheries in the Windom fisheries management area. Although not sampled well in the 2013 population assessment (0.9/trap net), it is believed that a quality Northern Pike population exists in Lime Lake. Lime Lake is used as a source for Northern Pike brood stock which are used for rearing fingerlings in the Windom area.

Each spring, 150 to 300 adult Northern Pike are collected from Lime Lake and stocked into rearing ponds. Lime Lake could provide some good Pike action early in the season before water temperatures rise because of summer heat.

Island Lake (163 acres) Lyon County: Northern Pike are on the prowl in Island Lake!

In 2011, Northern Pike were captured at a rate of 27/gill net, which is over 3 times greater than what we would expect for this type of lake. In 2011, the majority of the Pike sampled were between 18 and 22 inches, with Pike up to 31 inches observed. After four summers of growth, it is safe to assume that there are some dandies swimming around in this body of water. Island Lake also boasts an abundant population (over 400 per gill net in 2011!) of nice-sized Yellow Perch.

Additional Opportunities for Northern Pike First Fulda Lake (122 acres) Murray County: 7 per gill net, averaged 24 inches.

Early birds don’t always get worm

Bullheads and bowling, what connection could there be between bullheads to bowling? The best spring bullhead feed I ever enjoyed was at a small hometown pub that was famous for its four lanes of hand set bowling, hamburgers with fried onions, cold beer, and all the breaking hometown news.

Spring was the end of the bowling league season and the beginning of bullheads spawning. Bullheads taken from the cold water that came from melting snow were solid, clean tasting, and were easy pickings with nothing but a landing net. Many guys in the bowling league were farmers, and they

knew when tiles were running free and the bullheads were on the move, so they told Spike, the tavern owner, that they would be bringing bullheads in for a feed during a bowling night.

There were two shifts of bowlers each league night. The guys who bowled early, were the guys with the bullheads.

When they arrived to bowl, the “patent leather pike” were all cleaned and ready for the griddle.

Spike had a bunch of grocery bags mixed with flour, onion salt, pepper, and his secret spices ready for the fish.

Spike always used “Fluffo” to fry fish, rocky mountain oysters, and back straps from deer and elk. The fried onion taste that was part of his grill’s personality added a special something that can not be described.

Bullhead night was the only league night that did not feature a beer frame.

Everyone who enjoyed the fish chipped in to pay for the beer before, during, and after the meal.

Spike placed paper towels across the bottom of two big sheet cakes pans.

Then he put the bullheads in neat rows, and patted them dry. From there the bullheads went into the flour mix, and then Spike lined them up neatly on his big griddle covered with hot “Fluffo.

With his big steel hamburger spatula he would turned a flat of 6 brown bullheads at a time.” Almost as fast as the guys could put the bullheads on the griddle, Spike would be taking a flat of crisp bullheads off. It went on through almost 2 full shifts of bowling.

While the guys were eating, a fellow who was a professional usher at his church, took off his Pioneer Seed cap and took up a collection from everyone who was eating. Spike always got enough money to pay for the FLUFFO and seasonings.

Now is the time to enjoy fresh bullheads. All you need is a long shank hook, a 9/16” nut for a sinker, some worms, and a place where water is flowing from a culvert or over some sort of dam. The limits are generous, the fishing is easy, and a bullhead feed is a great party.

It was 6 a.m. and we could hear the bus tires whine crossing the river bridge into Grand Rapids, Manitoba. It wouldn’t be long and we would get our nightcrawlers from the bus.

We saw the white bus coming. Once we got the nightcrawlers, we would be fishing by 7 a.m. We were really “pumped” about the walleye fishing that awaited us. We heard the bus driver shift into third gear as he drove off the bridge.

Then we heard him shift into fourth gear.

Then we saw the bus. The bus labored up the hill heading north.. We watched for its signal light to flash. As the bus got closer to the station it seemed to be picking up speed. Then right in front of us, the driver shifted gears once more, and whizzed by us at 45 miles per hour!

No one said a word. We couldn’t believe our nightcrawlers were on their way to Thompson, Manitoba!

At 6 a.m. on the following day, we gathered once more at the gas station to meet the bus on its return trip. This time the bus pulled in. The driver stepped out of the bus with two half pint Styrofoam containers. He said: “You owe me $10.” We gave him the money and as he climbed the steps of the bus we heard him say under his breath: “Damn worms!”

To understand what these nightcrawlers had cost us is important.

An entire flat of them were purchased by our bait dealer who traveled from Madison, Minnesota to Montevideo, Minnesota to get them.

Then our bait dealer dumped the whole flat of nightcrawlers out on paper, removed all the soil, sorted the nightcrawlers to find the biggest and best, then repacked them in legal worm bedding for Canada. Then my son met the bait dealer half way and got the crawlers.

We kept the crawlers cool and fresh for over 600 miles. Upon arrival at our camp, we placed the Stryofoam bait box on the porch of our cabin so it would stay cool overnight. The crawlers waited until they were sure we were in bed, and then the whole bunch of them escaped.

This was the first time that we used number 5 Rapala Shad Raps to fish for walleyes. We have never taken nightcrawlers to Canada since this illfated trip.

Restoration eyed for unique Fulda depot

Railroad depots built a century or more ago are reminders of what brought settlers to Southwest Minnesota.

Railroads were influential in early settlement, but so were influential people like Bishop John Ireland and Dillon O’Brien, editor of the Catholic newspaper Northwestern Chronicle. When they negotiated with the railroad, their goal was to have a railroad line designate 150,000 acres for Catholic settlers.

The town of Fulda originated from the Catholics’ agreement with Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Most Catholic settlers found land around the Avoca or Iona areas, while many of Fulda’s settlers came from Germany. The Southern Minnesota Railroad arrived to the Fulda area in 1879; the Milwaukee depot was built in 1880 after that line purchased the Southern line; Fulda was incorporated Nov. 21, 1881.

Fulda’s depot is among several twostory railroad depots erected in the region. A ticket office and passenger waiting rooms occupied the first floor, with company agent’s family living in spacious second floor quarters. The Fulda depot was built with the East Lake architecture, which reflected the Victorian styles popular in the late 19th Century. The Fulda depot is the last one in the region using the East Lake design.

Railroad traffic increased steadily following the Fulda depot’s construction.

By 1895, four passenger trains and four freight trains rumbled through Fulda daily. But it soon became apparent the depot could provide better service if it were closer to the Fulda business district, so it was moved a short distance north and west in 1901. A freight house on the depot’s west end was added later.

Changing times led to the abandonment of Fulda’s railroad and the neglect of the depot. Feb. 29, 1980, marked the passage of the last freight train through Fulda. But in 1979, a women’s reading club rescued the depot by paying the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad $100.

Other town residents with fond memories of their depot soon joined the reading club in establishing the Fulda Heritage Society. The society wasted no time enrolling the depot in the National Register of Historic Places. All Aboard Antique business has been at home in the depot for nearly 20 years, but that situation will be changing.

leadership of Marge Winters, has initiated the process of revitalizing the depot and restoring the building to its original use. Grant money has enabled the Heritage Society to begin the process of reviving the 1950s era in the depot.

A caboose from the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad found a new home in Fulda in 2010. The Heritage Society purchased the car at an auction in Dassel, for the purpose of enhancing the town’s rail history. It was upgraded with new siding, roof repairs and paint before being opened to the public for tours.

The Society is making plans for a fundraising event on August 5-6 to help pay for expenses involved in the restoration.

Of course, foods will be available, but so will other vendors including folk artists, musicians, crafts and jewelry.

Tours of the historic depot at 105 Front Street can be arranged by calling 507425-2201 to verify that the museum is still open to visitors.

Steve Horn, railroad historian and member of the Heritage Society, estimates that actual renovation won’t begin until next summer, at the earliest.

“We’ll shut it down during construction,” he predicted.

Bell is last reminder of Avoca Indian school, boys’ academy

Onlookers could do little but watch the school burn to the ground on Feb. 12, 1910.

At a time when Southwest Minnesota was a vast unbroken prairie land, hardy settlers from the eastern regions filled wagons with all their possessions and ventured into this new land of opportunity, hope, and hardships.

Among those brave souls was an Irishman, Bishop John Ireland, who held his religious beliefs and education in high esteem.

Before Minnesota became a state, Bishop Ireland’s family settled in St. Paul, a city which he later viewed as a place where Irish Catholics were losing their faith and from which they must be rescued. He and Bishop John Lancaster Spading of Illinois founded the Irish Catholic Colonization Association, which settled more than 4,000 families on approximately 400,000 acres of land in Swift, Big Stone, Lyon, Murray, and Nobles Counties. Once the settlers built their businesses and homes, they erected churches and schools to be the focus of their communities.

Bishop Ireland, an advocate of education, stated, “The Catholic school… is the most fruitful of all intuitions for the preservation and perpetuation of the faith in this country.” He then began building boarding schools in western Minnesota beginning with the Catholic Industrial School for boys in Clontarf in Swift County, a project which failed because it attracted too few students to support itself. The same was true of other boarding schools he helped to establish including the school at Avoca in Murray County.

In 1882, Bishop Ireland requested that the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus send seven nuns to open a convent school in Avoca. He hoped the Sisters would bring cultural refinement to settlers as they struggled to carve out a new life on the prairie. After the purchase of a large resort hotel near Lime Lake for $6,400, the Sisters arrived in May 25, 1883, and spent the entire summer cleaning the building before it could open in September of 1883 as the Academy of St. Rosa Catholic Day and Boarding School to the sound of cannons. Although there were no actual cannons in town, ingenious settlers used anvils and gun powder to replicate the sound.

Instead, enrollment remained low and bankruptcy loomed closely on the prairie, so in 1884 Bishop Ireland followed the pattern of the Clontarf school, which also found itself in deep financial difficulty. He signed a contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which would pay the school $85 per year for each girl who was enrolled in the school. In return the school would teach 50 Indian girls the basics of English, “civilized” manners and customs, and the Catholic religion. Native-American girls were not allowed to return to the reservation for three years during, based on the rational that this would give the British Sisters time to “Americanize” their students.

The students learned English by singing and in time became a choir made up of voices which blended beautifully with the addition of a charming cultural pathos in their voices.

This choir went all over to perform and eased the loneliness of the children.

On Sept. 4, 1884, 13 bewildered Sioux Indian girls arrived at The Holy Child Academy. Later the Sisters were pleased when some Chippewa girls came to their school. Little did they know that the Sioux and the Chippewa were not friendly, so they were surprised when the girls continued their feud at school.

Occasionally a girl would run away and then would be brought back to the school.

Life was very difficult in Avoca during those years with little food and nine chimneys on the building which, when the wind was in the right direction, would fill the school with smoke and caused respiratory problems for the students.

The Sisters raised a large garden, canned

food for the winter, and begged for and received donations from community members. In the winter, cold and hunger plagued this school on the prairie. When their cow fell off a train trestle and landed

Granite Falls saddles up for Western Fest

The 38th annual Western Fest celebration, including the popular Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Stampede, gallops into Granite Falls June 21-24.

The PRCA Stampede will be held June 22-24 at LeeMar Ranch. The popular rodeo entices cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country.

The family-oriented Western Fest kicks off in downtown Granite Falls on Wednesday (June 21) with several events slated throughout the day. Businesses participate in Cowboy Crazy Days and offer discounts and prizes to their customers.

Also on the first day of Western Fest, there will be a Kiddie Parade and Kiddie Carnival downtown, as well as a burger and brat feed, free ice cream floats, and introductions of Western Fest queen candidates and royalty.

On the following days, there will be a Kids’ Fishing Contest, face painting, free watermelon feed, street dances with live music, a beer garden, Rodeo Walk/ Run, Firemen’s barbecue, Miss Western Fest brunch and pageant, and the Grand

Parade.

The 29th annual PCRA Stampede also offers several activities through its three-day run. The LeeMar Ranch west of town has been hosting rodeos for six decades, including the Minnesota State High School Rodeo for 32 years before it disbanded in 1988.

Thursday night (June 22) is Kids’ Night at the rodeo in which admission is $1 for anyone 12-and-under if accompanied by an adult.

Anyone wearing pink for Friday’s “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” rodeo theme will have $2 of his or her paid admission fee donated to the Granite Falls Hospital Chemotherapy Infusion Suite.

And all three of the Stampede Rodeo nights will have free pony rides for kids, as well as a chance to see if they can ride a sheep for six seconds without falling off.

Fans will also be entertained at the rodeo by specialty acts such as trick riders, trick ropers and rodeo clowns.

Hometown hero Tanner Aus, who is ranked sixth in the world in Bareback Riding, is expected to return to defend his Bareback title at Western Fest.

Burgers will sizzle June 10 at Shetek

The Friends of Lake Shetek State Park are planning a Saturday, June 10 pork burger picnic, to help raise money for the park.

Serving will be at the state park’s picnic shelter near Lake Shetek, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Grilled pork burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips, dessert and a beverage will be sold for $6 All proceeds

go toward park improvements and special activities at the park.

The event is held during National Get Outdoors Day, which offers free admission to all state parks.

Those who want to show their support for Shetek State Park are invited to join the Shetek “Friends” group. Memberships are $25 annual for a family.

Great fishing opportunities in state lakes & streams (Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources)

Just how great is fishing in the land of 10,000 lakes? Minnesota ranks second in the nation in the number of resident anglers -- 1.4 million Minnesotans cast a line each year. Minnesota is the third most-popular inland fishing destination for out-of-state visitors.

Fishermen can find challenges in Minnesota’s 5,500 fishable lakes and 18,000 miles of fishable streams and rivers. Sport fishing creates an estimated $4.2 billion in economic activity and 35,000 private sector jobs.

Fisheries staff in 29 offices across Minnesota perform lake surveys and population assessments on a regular basis. The data collected allow informed decisions to be made about regulations that can sustain and enhance a fish population, fish stocking, water quality and habitat conditions.

Stocking of walleye, muskellunge and trout occur throughout Minnesota.

Stocking can provide opportunities to catch a particular species of fish that

anglers might otherwise not have.

Provided habitat and forage conditions are appropriate, stocking also can introduce new species that enhance and improve fishing.

Sometimes, fisheries management can correct the past. Here in Minnesota, sturgeon have been reintroduced into the rivers where they once lived. Lake trout are fully recovered in Lake Superior.

Habitat improvements that enhance spawning and conservative regulations are rehabilitating these and other species in our state’s most iconic lake.

Throughout Minnesota’s 87 counties, DNR fisheries staff use their knowledge and expertise to benefit area aquatic resources and fish. Whether it’s setting and checking nets to count fish and record the data, stocking fish, surveying habitat or working with community, educational and outdoor groups, all the work combines to make fishing in Minnesota a truly world class experience.

upside down, farmers saved the day by tipping the critter right side up to save her life. When the weather was really cold, the Sisters brought their turkeys into the school to keep them warm. One Sister spent all of her time sewing for the school and its residents. When food was scarce, the Sisters fed the students before themselves.

The school tried to keep two additional girls called “spares” who would replace girls who died. The most common cause of death was tuberculosis. Six of the girls who died were buried in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in easily over-looked graves with little markers.

After the Bureau of Indian Affairs changed it policies in 1893, the school closed and its students transferred to the Pipestone Indian School. In September of 1905, the school became St. Bernard’s Hall, a boys’ military school. Fire broke out in the building on February 12, 1910, a day which was so frigid that the water supply froze, so all people could do was to stand by and watch the building burn to the ground, ending the era of the military school. Anglers can fish for rainbow and brown trout in waters across five southwestern Minnesota counties, as the result of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources stocking operations.

During April, the DNR stocked the following creeks: • Fort Ridgely Creek (Renville County) – 300 yearling rainbow trout and 300 adult brown trout • Ramsey Creek (Redwood County) – 300 yearling rainbow trout and 300 adult brown trout • Redwood River (Lyon County) – 2,500 adult brown trout • Scheldorf Creek (Cottonwood County) – 450 adult brown trout • Spring Creek (Brown County) – 300 yearling rainbow trout and 300 adult brown trout The brown trout will average about one pound each and rainbow trout will average one-half pound each.

Stream trout are defined as splake, brook, brown and rainbow trout. Anglers are limited to five fish of combined species, with only one trout that may be more than 16 inches long.

All anglers 16 years of age and over must possess a Minnesota angling license. Any angler 18 or older must also have a trout stamp validation. Anglers 16-17 are exempt from the trout stamp validation. Fishing hours for stream trout on inland waters are from one hour before sunrise until 11 p.m. each day. All stream trout must have head, tail, fins and skin intact when being transported.

“Stocking these creeks is popular with area anglers each spring since natural reproduction is limited in southwestern Minnesota,” according to Scott Mackenthun, DNR area fisheries supervisor. “It offers a unique fishing opportunity and is a project we hope to be able to continue into the future.”

Mackenthun also urges anglers to know the trespass law as it relates to trout fishing and to always ask the landowner for permission to access if unsure. More information and maps can be found at www.mndnr.gov/fishing/ trout_streams.

Fishing & canoeing are good mix on Minnesota River Big catfish lure anglers

If you happen to smell fish frying along the Minnesota River, it might be a group of canoeing catfish anglers guided

by Tom Kalahar.

Kalahar, a retired 37-year employee of the Renville County Soil and Water Conservation District, has turned his attention to the pleasures of the meandering Minnesota River and its abundance of channel catfish and other fish species.

“I grew up in Ottertail County in northern Minnesota where there were 1,049 fishing lakes,” he said. “I came down here in 1979 and was shocked as far as the geography goes. I was used to a lot of woods and lakes. There wasn’t much around here at all. But then I discovered the Minnesota River Valley and soon learned how tremendous the Minnesota River is for fishing and history.”

Kalahar’s connections through groups he joined while working for the Soil and Conservation District gave him his start in fishing the river. And the more he learned about the river, the more confident he became in teaching others.

“I know a lot about the river,” he admitted. “I know the areas where the fish like to hang out, I know where the sandbars are so we can stop to rest or have lunch, and I know the history of events that have happened along the river.”

With his knowledge, a fishing excursion not only becomes a way to entice a “keeper” into your canoe, it also can become a fascinating history lesson. Ask Kalahar a question about an event along the river such as the Dakota Uprising and he soon takes you back in time.

Kalahar has now been guiding paddling fishing groups along the river for 20 years.

And the sights and sounds along the river of deer, river otters, beavers, wild turkeys, eagles and more would be worth the price of admission … if there was one.

“It’s pro-bono,” said Kalahar, referring to his free trips. “It’s not about the money.

That’s just how deeply I feel about the Minnesota River. I want the people that go along to have a good time and learn about the river and ways they can help keep the river clean and safe.”

Kalahar likes to guide in small groups to make it easier for everyone.

His unofficial guide service is called Minnesota River Adventures.

“I have three canoes and two kayaks that I can provide. I will also provide all the bait, rods and reels, tackle and life jackets, unless someone wants to bring their own. I even cook the fish for them and provide all the ingredients, paper plates and utensils. The only thing I ask them to bring is a beverage and some snacks.”

The trips vary in distance and time spent on the river.

“Ninety-nine percent of our trips are day trips,” he said. “We do a few overnighters, too. Day trips might start at 9 a.m. near Renville and end up at 5 or 6 p.m. in Redwood Falls. An overnight trip might be from Granite Falls to Redwood Falls, which is around 25 miles.”

Kalahar prefers to use nightcrawlers as bait.

“We’re not interested in the biggest fish, so I’ll use crawlers,” he said.

“We’re more interested in catching a lot of fish, although we do catch a big one occasionally. We’ll keep enough for a meal, but mostly it’s catch-and-release.”

The largest fish anyone has landed on one of Kalahar’s trips was a 25-pound catfish, but usually the larger fish break the line of the light tackle that is used.

As the day wears on, Kalahar will settle on one of the dry sandbars for lunch. He cleans the fish that have been caught and soon his portable propane stove is frying up a batch of catfish, or any other fish someone might land, to make fish tacos with tortillas and all the fixings.

“There are 89 different fish in the river,” he said. “They are anywhere from a 50-pound flathead catfish to sturgeons, carp, suckers, sheepshead, walleyes, northerns, crappies and sunfish. We’re

mainly after channel catfish, but we will also catch other species. The Minnesota River is a world-class catfishing river.

We’ve caught up to 100 catfish a day on a trip.”

Kalahar feels there is a misconception about a sheepshead.

“Most people have heard sheepshead taste terrible and will throw them back,” said Kalahar. “And if we catch one, I’ll cook it and someone will mention how bad they are. So I’ll ask them if they have ever eaten one and they always say ‘no.’

I think they taste every bit as good as a walleye.”

Even though Kalahar has guided hundreds of men, women and children on his fishing trips, he enjoys the experience more and more every day.

“It’s rewarding to see people having fun,” said Kalahar, who also is a guide for wild turkey hunts. “It’s a different experience every trip so it never gets boring. I learn something every outing, too.”

Kalahar wishes more people would come to appreciate the Minnesota River.

“It’s very underutilized,” he said.

“People have the impression that the river is dirty and polluted. The water quality is actually pretty good. It’s a lot cleaner than it was years ago because of recent rules and regulations in regards to urban runoffs. We should appreciate it more than we do.”

Auctioneer’s cry replaces hurrahs in old school gym

The school in Storden bid farewell to students in the mid 1990s when the Storden-Jeffers school district consolidated with Lamberton and Sanborn to become Red Rock Central.

The village of Storden bought the old building for $3,000. But the school needed expensive repairs. Enter Croatt Auction Service LLC and John Croatt.

“I put in a sealed bid of $3,000, and my bid was the highest,” said Croatt. “We had to put on a new roof because the old one leaked.”

The auction service adapted portions of the building to meet its needs. The auditorium/gymnasium became the auction site. Five classrooms were utilized for storage, with former offices becoming space for short order lunches.

Every other Sunday, the repurposed auditorium is packed with merchandise and meeting with potential buyers and spectators. A staff of 13 to 15 employees works the auction. Preparations for the next auction begins less than 24 hours after the previous one ended. After an auction ended in early May, this writer was amazed to see many new sale items and the racks laden with boxes by the next Monday afternoon. Gayle Erickson and Monica Gode were already setting up the next auction.

stops. I also learned a lot watching Rich Reiner and Fritz Tassler in action.”

Most of the time, two auctioneers work a sale, but sometimes 3 rings are needed.

Croatt hired auctioneer Ryan Livermont, Pipestone, after he won an auctioneering contest at Farm Fest. He and Richard Aukrust, Hanska, complete the Croatt team.

The gymnasium and performing arts stage elicit fond, and maybe not-so-fond memories for Storden area folks. One auctioneer stands in front of a heavy, blue drapery hiding the stage. Bidders sit on metal folding chairs, some with

unclaimed soft cushions to ease the pain of waiting to bid on a prized collectible, while others are meandering around, checking to see if there’s anything they should buy.

“We’re one of the first in Minnesota to computerize our auction,” related Croatt.

Each auctioneer has a clerk by his side prepared to record vital information— seller’s number, bidder’s number and price paid for the item—into the mobile clerking station’s computer.

People interested in antiques and collectibles, ranging from the big items like furniture and appliances to the smaller, and often the most sought

after, categories like stoneware/ pottery, glassware/dishes, toys/games or household. Groatt is known for his knowledge of primitives as well as antiques and collectibles. Buyers come from five states looking for items to add to their collections. Some bidders operate antique shops of their own. Others are looking for just the right piece to display in their homes. Some are more interested in socializing and maybe bidding on an item that is just too good not to ignore.

Antique hunters come from all walks of lives.

“We have several doctors and lawyers who do this on a sideline,” said Croatt.

Others come from countless occupations.

Regardless of how they earn a living, they are all part of a select group of people interested in memorabilia from yesteryear.

After a six-hour auction is over, and John’s wife Gayle has received payments from buyers, it’s time for the auctioneers to unwind after the hours of cajoling bidders.

Croatt installed fluorescent lights in the gymnasium’s ceiling to upgrade the traditional gym lighting. Glassware sparkles under the bright lights, and all merchandise is easy to see.

Croatt’s auction business isn’t confined to the building in Storden, since he also conducts on-site household and farm auctions he is also a real estate agent who concentrates on the Highway 30 corridor.

The former Storden school is now an auction center.

The United States flag waves above veterans’ memorials which serve as year around tributes to those men and women who throughout our country’s history have given freely of themselves and have honorably and bravely preserved our many freedoms which the United States Constitution bequeaths to us. These men and women signed up to serve not

knowing what their patriotic service would include or how much they would ultimately sacrifice for our nation as they protected us, our freedoms, and our future. Most served their tours of duty and returned to civilian life, others made careers for themselves in the service to their country, and many gave their lives.

Some were drafted and some volunteered, many continued their family’s tradition of service to our country,

and others signed up for the adventure and educational opportunities. These servicemen and servicewomen took on dissimilar jobs; yet, together, each of them stood up and answered the call of their country. In addition, they left behind their families, their homes, their careers, and their educations. Those whom they left behind took on new roles including raising their children alone, making home repairs, managing their

limited finances, and relying on their support system made up of others whose loved ones were serving elsewhere.

Numerous servicewomen and servicemen are members of the eighth or ninth generation of their families who since the Revolutionary War chose to serve. Others are the first in their family to join the military. All served honorably

At the turn of the 20th Century, Beaver Falls was a bustling and upcoming community. The loss of the county seat and lack of railroad access led to the town’s decline and eventual abandonment. (Renville County Historical Society photo).

Remember Beaver Falls? Few do Even though the town of Beaver Falls no longer exists, the Renville County township by the same name will celebrate its Sesquicentennial this June.

The 150th anniversary celebration begins June 9 with a moonlight free-will donation walking tour of the Beaver Falls Cemetery starting at 8:30 p.m.

Those attending the walk should bring their own flashlight.

Beaver Falls Cemetery is located at Beaver Falls County Park north of Morton on County Road 2, one mile west of Hwy. 71.

Hosted by Mary Ahrens Wetmore, the cemetery walk will be an informative outing about the people who once lived here, as well as historical facts and myths. Popcorn and root beer will be served. People can RSVP by calling 507697-6147.

On June 24 a silent auction at the Town Hall site in Beaver Falls County Park runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a potluck dinner at noon.

A 1:15 p.m., visitors will learn about the heritage of Beaver Falls, which until 1900 was the Renville County seat. Bustling

Beaver Falls contained a hotel, flour mill, general store, school, saloon, hardware store, lumber mill, and brewery. When the county seat was moved to Olivia, the population of Beaver Falls declined steadily until its eventual abandonment.

The site of the former town is now a county park.

The Dakota Drummers will be on hand at 2 p.m. in which Dakota history will be discussed.

The Sesquicentennial celebration then shifts to the Renville County Historical Society in Morton with a sing-a-long

‘Ghost tours’ offered in Pipestone The Pipestone County Museum, in conjunction with the Pipestone Civil War Days, will be providing guided ghost tours through the downtown area with stories of the paranormal and the ghosts who inhabit local homes and businesses in Pipestone, Minnesota, beginning May 27. The tours are to be held every Saturday evening from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend at 8:00pm and during elected dates in October. The tour lasts about 1 ½ hours and guides provide some history of the

area as well as the ghostly tales.

The tour starts at the Pipestone County Museum and takes you to the sites where individuals have experienced encounters with the local spirits and through a historic hotel, which is a source of many paranormal activities and sightings. The cost is $8 and is not recommended for children under the age of 12. Special group tours are available by appointment. Reservations are recommended by contacting the

Pipestone County Museum at 507-8252563 or pipctymu@iw.net. Proceeds are earmarked for Pipestone Civil War Days festival activities and the Pipestone County Museum’s programs.

Catch & release helps angling opportunities (Minnesota Dept. Natural Resources)

Stories of multiple anglers catching the same fish are more than fishing lore – they’re the real result of anglers practicing catch-and-release fishing.

Anglers can take several actions to boost the chances a fish survives after being released.

“Catch-and-release fishing is an important topic, especially in recent years with expanded catch-and-release seasons in Minnesota for lake sturgeon, trout and bass,” said Al Stevens, fisheries survey and systems consultant. “What’s more, anglers often choose to release large fish, and are required to release fish that aren’t of a legal size to keep.”

Fish can be injured by hooks, stress and being pulled from deep water. Being hooked in the mouth does little damage to the fish, and setting the hook quickly helps avoid hooking a fish in the stomach or gills.

Jigs, circle hooks and active baits like crankbaits are more likely to hook a fish in the mouth. Barbless hooks or pinched barbs can help, but where the hook ends up is more important than the presence or absence of a barb.

“Ever hear the term, ‘throw it back?’

That’s a hold-over from the past when people thought nothing of literally tossing fish back so they slapped onto the water,” Stevens said. “In contrast, these days we hear more about handling the fish firmly but gently, and quickly returning them to the water.”

Beginner anglers, especially, may wonder what to do if a fish is deeply hooked.

“If a hook is deep in the fish, simply cut the line and leave the hook in the fish,” Stevens said. “A long-nosed type pliers is handy to remove hooks, but remember most people aren’t fish surgeons. It does them no good to use lots of force to twist out a deep hook.”

In the summer or when anglers are fishing deep water, the DNR encourages restraint when the fish are really biting.

Fish pulled up from deep water can experience stress and injury, so anglers who plan on catch-and-release are reminded to avoid deep water. Under conditions when mortality after release is high because of physical factors like warm water or deep fish, anglers who catch and release a large number of fish could inadvertently cause more fish to die after release than their daily bag limit.

Here are a few more tips for successfully releasing fish: • Wet hands before touching a fish to prevent removal of their protective slime coating. Rubberized nets help, too.

• Unhook and release the fish while it is still in the water, if possible, and support its weight with both hands or with a net when removed from the water. Never lift them vertically.

• Hold a fish firmly but gently.

Don’t drop it. And don’t hold a fish by the eyes.

• If planning to release a fish, do not place it on a stringer or in a live well.

• Revive a fish by cradling it under the belly and gently moving it back and forth in the water until it swims away.

• Harvest a fish that can be legally kept if it is bleeding or can’t right itself.

‘Super Fish’ are in many bodies of water They are in the lakes, the sloughs, stock dams, creeks, rivers, even flooded ditches. They will eat crayfish, minnows, worms, frozen smelt, pieces of dead carp, even birds and baby ducks. People like to pickle them, fry them in peanut oil, boil them, and even make their heads into chowder. Their flesh comes in the form of big solid flakes, and it can be white, gray, even orange. Just like all fish, it only tastes as good as the water it came from. Muddy bottom prairie lakes can give them a muddy bottom dirt taste. Winter, spring, summer, and fall…northern pike are on the prowl for a meal.

The Malenke family had a farm on the south shore of East Graham Lake in Nobles County. A large field tile drain pipe emptied crystal clear water into the lake. The evening dinner hours for northern pike started at about 5:00 p.m. each evening. We would seine creeks looking for sucker minnows. The bigger the minnow, the more Graham Lakes northerns liked them. We offered our sucker minnow to the northerns on a single hook weighted by a big sinker, floating beneath a red and white bobber that was just a little smaller than a baseball.

The sucker would tow the bobber around. At times, the bobber seemed to pick up speed. Some times the bobber would sit so still it wouldn’t cause a ripple. That was the signal to keep a keen eye on it. If it slowly began to move away from shore, you knew something was

happening in the sucker’s world. Then, ever so slowly, the bobber would be half under and half above the water. Then it would move away slowly and begin to disappear beneath the water. Relax, this is just the first act of the northern pike show. Then suddenly the bobber would reappear farther out from shore. Now is the time to get ready for action.

At this point, we would stand up and take our fishing rods into our hands.

Slowly we would peel line off the reel to give the northern some slack line. Now when the bobber sinks under the water and begins to move away from shore, is the time to let the northern pike take up the slack line. As the line gets almost straight away, we would set the hook and begin to reel all in one motion. It was like a bull rider nodding his head, and the fight was one.

You may ask why we didn’t set the hook the first time the bobber went under the water. Well, northern pike kill fish before they eat them and usually the fish they eat die when the northern crunches them cross ways in their jaws.

Once the sucker was dead, the northern would release it from its mouth and then swallow the sucker head first.

It has been a wet winter and spring, and the water offers the area northern pike all kinds of water highways to follow on their spawning journeys.

Many know duck hunting spots that lead to streams and rivers that dump into our lakes. Consequently, a person can cast a flashing spoon into a drainage ditch, duck slough, drain pipe, or dam and catch a northern pike.

The Big Slough south of Slayton and the Badger Lakes in the Avoca area are spots where I have joined other

fishermen to catch a meal of northerns.

The Currie Dam, Talcott Dam and the culverts of Lake Shetek are all prime spots where minnows stack up in the flowing water and offer the northerns a fine spring buffet.

One nice advantage to fishing for the “super fish” is that no live bait is necessary. Just a rod fitted with a spinning or casting reel, and some old faithful baits such as red and white silver backed spoons, jigs dressed with twister tails, and just about any of the many baits offered by Rapala.

and bravely in whatever capacity they were assigned with pride in America and the desire to preserve the tenets of its constitution.

When they went into the service, they all signed papers which could be compared to a check on which they wrote the date and on the pay to the order of line entered the words: The United States of America. They signed the check but they left the amount lines blank because they were willingly offering this country whatever it needed. For the prisoners of war, those who were missing in action, and the fallen heroes; the amount was huge.

When they returned home, all veterans would see stamped on the check these words: Paid in full. Among the things which they continue to carry with them include pride in their service, their training, their patriotism, post-traumatic stress disorder, flashbacks, hundreds of stories to tell, good and bad memories, and mental and physical injuries.

Each military family figuratively also signed a type of check in which they gave up their loved ones to serve.

Those whose civilian checks took the greatest amount were the Gold Star Mothers, Gold Star Fathers, and Gold Star Families.

Appreciation for their service must not end with the paid in full stamp on the check. Instead, it must continue with each time someone thanks a service

It’s hard to beat giving a bucket to a fisherman My wife and I hosted special friends for their birthdays last month.

I say special friends because we have shared our families… kids, and now grandkids…over the past 45 years, so each year we are faced with making a decision of birthday gifts. My wife gets the gifts for his wife and I attempt to get him something.

In his retirement, my friend has taken on a large group of farmyard pets that he describes as pasture decoration. That’s a perfect description of these animals because they really add life and beauty to a pasture that features a meandered creek. These farm pets are very big, and even the best of buckets is no match for weight and the impact they can put on a bucket, so every other year I buy my friend industrial strength buckets for his birthday, and he always welcomes the new buckets with a big grin.

His buckets play a major role when he services his pets, and to show you just how vital they are, I will share this story with you. A number of years ago a construction crew visited our friends’ ranch. In the process of doing their work, the construction people took one of my friend’s buckets to mix up some sack-crete. After mixing the concrete,

When my friend went to feed his pets that evening, he couldn’t find this particular bucket. I have never seen my friend more upset, and was not satisfied until the contractor returned his buckets.

So, now I give him buckets, I label them with the name of his ranch, and I buy him buckets that no respectable workman would ever steal. This year the bucket colors were hot pink, hot green, and lady-like blue!

Walleye stamps support better fishing across Minnesota Anglers can support walleye stocking by purchasing $5 walleye stamps that help the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources provide more places to fish for walleye.

“You can buy a walleye stamp any time of the year, even if you already have a fishing license,” said Neil Vanderbosch, DNR fisheries program consultant.

“All the funds from walleye stamps go toward the cost of purchasing walleye from private fish farms for stocking into lakes.”

The overall walleye stocking effort ramps up each year in April when fisheries staff collect walleye eggs, fertilize them and transport the eggs to fish hatcheries around Minnesota.

The eggs spend two to three weeks incubating before hatching into fry that are soon released – two thirds into lakes and one third into rearing ponds. The fish in rearing ponds grow into 4- to 6-inch fingerlings that are stocked into lakes in the fall.

In addition to raising and stocking walleye, the DNR also buys walleye fingerlings from private producers to be stocked into lakes, and walleye stamp

It used to be that visitors without prior reservations would show up at the park entrance on busy weekends in hopes of getting one of the “first-come, firstserved” sites, but there was no guarantee of getting one. Now the DNR is going to start taking reservations for those sites, which typically make up 25 to 30 percent of the total sites at each campground.

The change comes as the result of a pilot project in 2014 and 2015, when about 20 percent of Minnesota’s state parks made all of their campsites reservable. Based on the positive response from customers, the Parks and Trails Division decided to expand the service statewide.

“As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Minnesota state parks and trails in 2016, we have lots to look back on with great pride,” said Erika Rivers, director of the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division, “but we’re also looking ahead to the future with the aim of continuously improving our operations and customer service. Making every site reservable in advance so that no one has to leave their

plans to chance is just one of the customer service improvements at Minnesota state parks and trails this year.”

Other customer service improvements include: • Same-day reservations. For spontaneous travelers and families with busy schedules, same-day reservations will be available – with no reservation fee – at most Minnesota state parks and recreation areas included in the reservation system (a few parks will require technical upgrades before implementing the change.) Previously, the cut-off for making reservations was midnight the night before arrival day. Know before you go. Cell phone coverage and Wi-fi can be unpredictable at parks, so it’s best to make a reservation before arrival.

• Online permit sales. Vehicle permits ($5/one-day and $25/yearround) are needed to enter Minnesota state parks and recreation areas. Permits are sold at park offices, at the DNR Central Office and at Twin Cities REI stores. Starting May 3, visitors can get permits online at www.mndnr.gov/ reservations.

Special programs set at Petroglyphs The Jeffers Petroglyphs open for the season Memorial Day weekend.

The Minnesota Historical Society site preserves Native American rock carvings hundreds and thousands of years old.

The oldest carvings are estimated to be from 7,000 years ago. An interpretative center is nearby.

Special programs are planned

throughout the summer at a nearby interpretative center.

“A New Look at the Carvings” Saturday, May 27, and repeated Saturday, June 24, from 5 to 7 p.m., allows visitors to take a bare-footed exploration of the rock face in the late afternoon/early evening hours, when a lower sun makes it easier to see the glyphs.

“American Indian Pottery Day” is planned Saturday, June 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. Demonstrations will be given about the tradition of American Indian pottery.

Visitors will be able to pinch their own clay pot to take home.

“Flintnapping Day,” Saturday, June 17, 1 to 4 p.m., will offer insight into how early hunters created arrowheads

for spears and arrows. A flintknapper will demonstrate the process of creating stone projectile points.

The Petroglyphs are in northeastern Cottonwood County, on County Road 2. From Hwy. 71, drive east on County Road 10, then go south a short distance County 2. The address is 27160 County Road 2, Comfrey.

Flocks of giant white birds have become a common sight in Minnesota.

But this wasn’t always the case.

American White Pelicans were driven to near extinction in the early 20th century from human pressures, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). There were no reports of nesting pelicans in Minnesota for 90 years, from 1878 until 1968.

Conservation efforts and federal regulations have helped pelican populations make a slow and steady comeback.

“The prairie pothole region of western Minnesota hosts 22 percent of the global population of this species,” according to Lisa Gelvin-Innvaer, DNR non-game wildlife specialist. In Minnesota, there are estimated to be about 22,000 pairs of pelicans that nest at 16 sites on seven lakes across the state.

American White Pelicans leave Minnesota each fall as lakes and rivers freeze. They winter along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico and typically return to Minnesota in early spring, as lakes and rivers thaw.

They are among the world’s largest birds and are easily recognized in flight.

Wingspans up to nine feet, bright white plumage with black-edged wings and large, orange bills distinguish them from any other species.

“Pelicans often fly in evenly spaced lines or V formations,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. “Unlike swans or geese which fly

with necks outstretched, pelicans fly with their necks doubled back against their shoulders. They often set up a rhythmic pattern of wing beats that ripple from the lead bird back to the end.”

American White Pelicans are highly social and live in large, dense colonies.

They feed exclusively on small fish and crustaceans and will work together for a meal.

“A group of pelicans will swim in a semicircle to herd their prey into shallow water,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. “Then they’ll scoop up fish and water in their beak pouch, drain out the water and swallow their food.”

Pelicans are popular among wildlife watchers. Gelvin-Innvaer advises that the birds are best enjoyed from a distance.

“Pelican colonies are vulnerable to human disturbance and contact should be minimized,” she said.

Volunteers offer memorable pontoon outings for seniors

Neither Susan nor Leon Mumm can remember exactly when the first Let’s Go Fishing meeting they attended was, but they understand the importance of the program and what it means for senior citizens who just don’t get out much anymore.

“I know they love it,” said Susan Mumm of the Lake Shetek Area Chapter of LGF. “Different ones have said, ‘You’ve made my day, you’ll never know what this means to us.’”

“One guy on there once was 105 years old — he sang the whole trip,” Leon Mumm said. “The whole trip. I said, ‘Did you enjoy your day?’ He said, ‘You’ll never know how much.’ That’s what we’re all about — the older people, getting them out.”

“This gives older people who never thought they could go out on a pontoon the chance to do it,” Mumm added. “We do fishing trips, too. We have sign-up sheets for nursing homes and assisted living places.”

Let’s Go Fishing has been doing this since its founding in Willmar in 2002. The program runs from May through September on many Minnesota and Wisconsin lakes.

The Mumms said volunteering for LGF can be a rewarding experience.

“We need volunteers for the captains, first mates, just people to help out with anything,” Leon Mumm said. “We’re holding our own. It’s hard to get enough volunteers to work with you. It’s getting harder. We just need some more people to help out a little bit so we can get more runs.”

Leon Mumm sets up a training program for prospective captains and first mates. There, people learn how to run the pontoon and of any other duties they may have, such as helping seniors in and out of the pontoon.

“The first mates will help get them on the boat and get their life jackets on,” Leon Mumm said.

The LGF pontoon stays at Lake Shetek when it’s not being used and is brought to area lakes like Lake Benton and Yankton throughout the summer.

Mumm said this year’s schedule isn’t set up yet.

LGF promotes the ride as beneficial on different levels, as it promotes socialization and independence, while it helps people cope with loneliness, depression and isolation.

“A lot of these people suffer from depression, and you get them out in the sun and take them out, it’s very, very healthy,” said Karla Seaberg of Tracy, one of the volunteers.

“I said one time when I was running the pontoon: ‘I hope when I get old, somebody will take me out on a pontoon,’” Leon Mumm joked. “It’s a good program.”

Volunteer Bill Chukuske and the Mumms said it’s important for all the volunteers to brush up on their history of area lakes because “they will ask you questions,” Leon Mumm said. “They’ll say, ‘How many people live on the lake? ‘How deep is the lake?’ I’ve got to know all these things.”

Chukuske said the group would like to be busier than they are.

“We’d like to be busier than we are. We want to take more people out,” he said. “We can do kids programs or if Grandma is turning 90 and the kids are home, we’ll take them out on a weekend. We would appreciate a donation to help pay for things, but we’d love to do that.”

The rides last anywhere from an hour-and-a-half to two hours. The 26-foot pontoon is completely covered.
