THE STARS WILL SHINE IN WALNUT GROVE Wilder Pageant group putting washed-out 2018 behind them and is looking forward to hosting 11 ‘Little House’ stars July 12-13 Bill Richards laughs when he thinks about last summer’s ood and what it did to the annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant. Laughs? Right — not because he took enjoyment in watching the waters rise, or having to cancel shows, but because of what came after. Richards, and other organizers of the pageant, have moved on from 2018 and is looking at what transpired in 2018 through a positive lens. “When a disaster happens, the best and the worst show up,â€? he said. “You had the worst with all the water, and you had lost customers and lost revenue, but then you had the best — you had people out there working their butts o when they should’ve been home pumping out their basements, you had people making donations, and we cleaned that place out better than it’s been cleaned in years.â€? The July 3 ood totally wiped out opening weekend last year. The show went on the second two weekends, and organizers tried to add some beneďŹ t performances on the Thursday nights of the second and third weekends but, of course, they were rained out. “We had a sump pump rae that I lost money on,â€? Richards joked. “It seemed so ďŹ tting. And one of the local people got it for their daycare and put it in their basement, so that was good. But most people thought it was the funniest thing in the world. For a buck apiece, I lost huge, but it was fun to do.â€? Wilder Museum Director Amy Foster said last year was a learning experience if nothing else. It was, however, very depressing, because of all the planning that goes into putting the show on every July. “Even though (the museum) is open April through October, you really plan for July,â€? she said. “That is the key. But the people weren’t here, the gift store items didn’t sell. We missed a whole pageant in the gift store. It takes a toll on you — you gear up for it all year long ‌ “ Rebuilding from July 2018 has been a huge undertaking. received a grant from California for about $8,500. The Walnut Grove Area Foundation also gave money, which was used to do some extensive work on buildings at the pageant site. They also attempted to recoup losses through FEMA but were unsuccessful. “Not wasted though, because we had to do our own analysis of what was wrong, what needed to be ďŹ xed and what the damages were,â€? Richards said. Extensive work on the grounds, buildings and roads was — and still is — being done to get ready for this
year’s event. “We always put on a great show, but I think we learned some things,� said Richards. Richards calls himself an unfortunate “sunny optimist in the face of death,� and it’s that kind of attitude that has served him and the rest of the pageant organizers well entering the 42nd Wilder Pageant, which will take place the weekends of July 5-6, 12-13 and 1920. And this will be no ordinary year, as a number of stars from hit TV series will be on hand the week of July 12-13. This
year is also the 45th reunion of the TV show and the museum. Stars who will be in Walnut Grove include Charlotte Stewart, Allison Arngrim, Dean Butler, David Friedman, Wendi Lou Lee, Sidney Greenbush, Stan Ivar, Radames Pera, Pamela Roylance, Lindsay Kennedy and Hersha Parady. Six of the celebrities have been in Walnut Grove before. “We’re excited,â€? Foster said. “Those who are coming back have been great in the past. They’re good visitors, they love the tourists. It brings in more people for one weekend speciďŹ cally, but it does bring in more people overall. They want to see the stars, that’s their goal.â€? Pera, who played John Jr. on the hit TV series, welcomes the chance to return as a guest of the Walnut Grove community. He was here for the 40th anniversary — a visit he called “sublime.â€? He said he’s looking forward to meeting returning fans and seeing new ones for the ďŹ rst time. “So many great memories ... like visiting the Ingalls’ dugout on Plum Creek — astounding, outstanding,â€? he said. “Then the big show at the natural amphitheater — a beautifullyengineered and superbly performed tradition. Then of course the hours of greeting so many great fans of the show. To witness four generations of women, from 8 to 80, standing in front of me in coordinated period costumes and matching bonnets, I mean, it doesn’t get more amazing than that. The museum

not feel like eating a hot meal, but it’s a great option for those busy days. Some favorite slow cooker meals are: •Steak •Meatballs •Taco Meat •Any variety of soup made with fresh garden vegetables •Pulled pork, BBQ shredded beef, or anything that can be easily added to a sandwich Make It Now, Eat It Later Another great option is to make up some make ahead or freezer meals. Even though you do have to heat up the oven to make most of those meals, you could try and make as many of them as possible at night when it is a little cooler in the house or when you can open the windows and let in some cooler air while you are cooking. We love doing make ahead meals at our house (especially for things like sides, breads, and snacks. Favorites in our home are: • Homemade Sausage Patties Use at least 2-3 pounds of ground beef or turkey and combine it with your family’s favorite spices and herbs. For ground turkey, add a little salt, garlic powder, basil, oregano, marjoram, and onion powder. For beef, add a little salt, garlic and onion powder. Form into patties and fry on the stovetop until cooked through. Place in the freezer and reheat to enjoy as needed. • Easy Refried Beans (made in the slow cooker with the extras frozen) Soak a large bowl full of pinto beans over night (with double the amount of water than of beans added). Rinse, and then place in the slow cooker the next day with water to just cover the beans. Add garlic, or other spices as desired. Cook on low for at least 8 hours in the slow cooker, stirring occasionally until the beans are soft and can be mashed. Mash up the beans and let them cool before placing in freezer bags. Pull them out of the freezer and
thaw before enjoying in your favorite burrito meal or simply warm them up in the microwave with some shredded chicken and cheese for an easy, ďŹ lling lunch. • Slice and Bake Cookies Make your favorite cookie recipe for any kind of drop (not cut out) cookie. Take the dough out of the bowl and roll it up into a log shape about 2 inches wide using plastic wrap. Freeze the cookie log. When you are ready to bake, simply slice the cookies o of the log, place on a greased cookie sheet and bake for a few minutes longer than you would the regular cookie recipe. Bake only the amount of cookies that you need so that you can enjoy fresh cookies anytime without the eort of mixing up the dough each time. A Few More No-Bake Meal Ideas •Taco Salad-with cold refried beans and Salsa • Cold Pasta (make the evening before when it’s not hot and refrigerate) – with a sharp or aged cheese and fresh veggies mixed in, topped with a vinegar based dressing. • Tacos – with cold refried black beans and fresh garden veggies • Anything Grilled! • Chef Salad And of course, there is plenty of fresh garden produce this time of year to feast on! Be sure and make frequent stops at the Farmer’s Market on the days that they are open to be able to indulge in the freshest in-season produce. Hopefully you’ve been able to ďŹ nd some great inspiration in this article for when it’s just too hot or busy to turn on the oven during the day and put in much eort in the kitchen. ‘GREEN’ BUT GROWING

Despite having little to no experience in growing grapes, Andy and Krista Kopperud purchased Painted Prairie Vineyard near Currie in 2014 from Ben and Kim Hause. The Kopperuds were both employed full time in other professions while also operating the winery, but Krista recently stepped away from her career in public health and human services in order to devote full time to the vineyard. Andy is an Internal Medicine and Pediatric Board Certified Physician practicing in Westbrook, while also covering in Tracy and Canby. “Neither of us had a winery background when we moved to our place,” said Krista. “We have jumped in 100 percent and have really spent time researching and networking to help us grow our knowledge of vine growing and wine making. We still consider ourselves ‘green,’ but we are making great strides.” The Kopperuds, who will celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary in August, were living in Westbrook and were looking for a new place to move to when their realtor referred them to this farmland with an existing winery. “We were fortunate enough to stumble upon this beautiful property when it was a current vineyard/ winery,” said Krista. The Hauses began operating the 1 1/2acre Painted Prairie Vineyard in 2011. “We kept the name when we purchased this place because it seemed fitting for this place,” said Krista. The Kopperuds have three children, Annika, 9; Elysa, 7; and Britta, 4. Andy grew up on a farm near Westbrook, while Krista grew up on a farm by Heron Lake. “We both wanted to live by water and we really like this area, so we wanted to move somewhere around here,” said Andy. “When the realtor first told me about this place, I thought it sounded nice. But when the realtor said ‘Oh, by the way, there’s a fully functional winery on the place’, I wasn’t sure what to think.” Despite both Kopperuds working full time and having no experience running this type of a business, they decided to take a chance. close proximity, they have assisted in the development and learning process of the vineyard and winery. “We are very fortunate to have family close by,” said Krista. “They have
helped us from the beginning of this adventure with an extra set of hands.” The area here is tranquil and picturesque. A a large pond acts as a backdrop for the many prairie grasses,
trees and, of course, the grapevines. “Sometimes after a long day, Krista and I will sit out here with a glass of wine and still be amazed at how beautiful it is out here, said Andy. “That’s when we know we made the right choice moving here.” The first year was spent exhaustively filling out forms for local, state and federal licensing to run a winery in Minnesota. The Kopperuds officially opened for business in July, 2015; one year after purchasing the property. “Navigating through the different layers of licensing took a long time,” Krista explained. “I don’t think either of us anticipated how hard it would be to understand the complexities of licensing.” The Kopperuds are still learning the nuances of growing grapes and owning and operating a winery.

“We are continually learning -- even ďŹ ve years into owning our place,â€? said Krista. “There is always something to learn. I think through networking, we’ve connected with other grape growers and winery owners and have picked their brains. We’ve also connected with ‘experts’ in the ďŹ eld, which has also been helpful.â€? Painted Prairie Vineyard halted operations for all of 2018 while undergoing an extensive renovation project that included a large production space, a tasting/event room, a commercial catering kitchen, men’s and women’s restrooms, and an oďŹƒce. “We are currently working on a large patio this summer, too,â€? Krista mentioned. The former winery building, known as the “Red Barnâ€?, will remain and be used for family gatherings and events. “There are times yet that I wake up at 3 a.m. and wonder if we did the right thing,â€? laughed Andy. “But we’re happy here. It’s a lot of work, but it’s been rewarding, too.â€? “Because we have a small vineyard, everything is done by hand. But it’s truly a labor of love,â€? Krista remarked. “At times, with everything that needs to get done, we get overwhelmed. But we love being outside and doing the winery piece.â€? The Kopperuds grow three varieties of grapes -- LaCrescent, Frontenac and Marquette -- on their 900 total vines. All the pruning each year is all done by hand and takes many hours to complete. “Pruning is extremely important for vine health and grape growing,â€? Krista explained. Painted Prairie Vineyard oers a variety of wines. Frontenac, Frontenac Reserve, Marquette, and Frontenac Rose are all wines made from onsite grapes. They also purchase Frontenac Blanc from a grower near Storden in order to oer a dry white wine. And Frontenac Gris comes from Hinterland Vineyard outside Clara City. “For fruit wines, we oer two apple wines made from Stonegate Orchards apples by Slayton,â€? Krista noted. “We have traditional apple wine and one made with blending Aronia berry juice with the apple wine. And we also have a plum wine. The plums come from an organic farm near Rochester.â€? Painted Prairie also makes a hard apple cider, appropriately named “Kopper Ciderâ€?. They also sell local

All the wine making, bottling and storing is done in the production facility on the Kopperud’s property. “Andy is the wine maker,â€? Krista revealed. “We use volunteers to help with bottling and labeling. Harvesting is done with the help of friends, family, and volunteers.â€? Painted Prairie Vineyard utilizes four part-time employees to assist in the tasting room and with some vineyard work. Painted Prairie also oers food items that go well with wine, such as grass-fed beef sticks, cheesecake cupcakes, cheese and cracker trays, and hot dip and chip platters. The Kopperuds have scheduled many events for the summer such as music, yoga and wine classes, Trivia Night, Women and Wine, and even a Paws on the Patio Night. The events schedule can be viewed on the Painted Prairie Vineyard website (paintedprairiewine.com) or Facebook page. • Painted Prairie Vineyard is open year-round on weekends; Fridays from 6-10 p.m.; Saturdays from 4-9 p.m.; and Sundays from 4-6 p.m. In June, the hours expand and include Thursdays and some Wednesdays. From Above The Fold: It is our honor to once again be bringing our readers in the region the writings of the late Bill Bolin, an iconic and beloved historian, educator and coach in Tracy for many decades. Bolin passed away October 15, 2017, and he is missed by so many to this day. Bill started writing for the Sailor in 1997 in hopes of passing down many of his experiences, especially to his children, grandchildren and the many students he encountered in Tracy Area High School from his student teaching in 1956-57 until his final retirement in 2010. The Tracy Area Headlight Herald, with permission from Bill’s family, is reproducing his popular columns in this edition of the Sailor, as well as in editions yet to come:
If you, a friend or relative ever played town team baseball in Southwest Minnesota (or anywhere in Minnesota, Iowa or South Dakota) you no doubt have memories that will last a lifetime. Before my time, a lot of good baseball was played in this area. Barnstorming teams and small town rivalries were huge attractions. Almost every exhibition game prompted a search for a top-notch hurler and often a complete battery‌ pitcher and catcher. Considering the times, money was freely spent. One would be hard pressed to ďŹ nd a town (regardless of size) that didn’t ďŹ eld a team. Even various townships organized baseball teams. With large families being the norm, some rural areas could, and did, ďŹ eld pretty strong teams with players all from two or three families. I have been told that three Condit brothers, (all within the square), and all relatives on my mom’s side, played 100 years ago for the 1907 Rock Elm, Wisconsin team. They were Edson, Ralph and Clinton and provide me with town ball roots. Recently Armand Peterson and Tom Tomashek put together a superb book on town team baseball in Minnesota from 1945-60. Its sub-title is “The Glory Days of Minnesota Amateur Baseballâ€?. Indeed those were the glory days of my personal obsession with the game. Bernie Humho wrote in his publisher’s letter for South Dakota Magazine a short message on the meaning of baseball. “Some poets and pundits see baseball as a metaphor for life. You start and end at home. Persistence and patience triumphs through nine long innings, or through a long dry summer – or through a century. You can strike out four times and still be a hero in the bottom of the ninth.â€? Reading this, I realize how true it was in my own life. In 1953 I struck out four times vs. Lismore and their ace Gary

First Night League and began playing some with the Hadley Buttermakers on Sunday afternoons. The summer of 1953 was my real initiation to town ball. All salaried teams were a thing of the past; however, you could hire three players. Other players may or may not have been paid, but they were supposed to reside within a 15 mile radius. No doubt a lot of rules were broken and some teams suered the consequences. Nearly every team hired two pitchers and this was my ďŹ rst experience of facing really topnotch pitchers every time at bat. It was a dream come true! I played short-stop and my high school basketball coach, Duane Baglien often played second. “Baggerâ€? had played for state champion Fergus Falls in double “Aâ€? baseball and lettered in football, basketball and baseball at the University of Minnesota. His ďŹ nal coaching stop was in Edina where he went on to win three consecutive boys’ state basketball championships and establish a record number of consecutive unbeaten games that still stands. How many kids had the opportunity to play along side one of Minnesota’s best athletes and coaches?

My town ball career moved on to Tracy and the opportunity to play with the Engineers. We had many years of excellent baseball and I was able to play with and against some of Minnesota’s best amateur players. Like at Slayton playing beside Duane Baglien, in Tracy I had the similar good fortune to play next to Art Marben, unanimously acclaimed to be one of Minnesota’s all-time top amateur ball players. Another treasured experience. The book “Townball� mesmerized me! Long forgotten names and games jump out at you and other pages rekindle long forgotten memories and experiences. book on their shelves. County museums, too, would be adding a huge chunk of history to their collections. Mind you, this book covers only 16 years of Minnesota baseball, but it was without a doubt the high water mark of Minnesota amateur baseball‌lighted parks, all salaried teams and tremendous talent. No one I’ve talked to believes these times will ever be repeated. We were following the great depression and WWII. America was itching for places to go and things to do and see. Baseball ďŹ lled the bill. I consider myself lucky to be a part of that memorable time. I was able to play or coach on almost every ball ďŹ eld from Luverne north to Ortonville, down the Minnesota River to New Ulm, south to Fairmont and back west through several good baseball towns to Luverne and including everywhere in between. Many (or most) of these towns no longer have teams and the ball diamonds have disappeared, but “Townballâ€? proves the old adage, “One picture is worth a thousand words.â€? The authors are quick to point out that even after exhaustive research they know full well that they have only “touched the surfaceâ€? and apologize to family and friends of the many good players of that period who went unmentioned. They express regrets, “So many stories, and so little space.â€? Personally, I feel that one of the very best amateur players in Southwest Minnesota during the period 1957 and beyond was Murl Fischer of Cottonwood, Granite Falls, Tracy, Wood Lake, Balaton and the many teams that drafted him for tournament play. Murl could play every position, hit for average and with power, run and steal bases, had a great arm and if stats could be collected, almost always played on the winning team. If you don’t believe me, go to a Yankee or Irish game and check out the adult fans — better yet, ask them how many they’ve had. In Tracy, the team faces the challenge of creating a fun atmosphere, sans beer, and more power to them. I’d love nothing more than to see 75 fans at a game, but unfortunately, it’s not happening yet. I get it to an extent, but they deserve more support than they’re getting. Tracy, of course, is just one of a number of teams in the region. There’s some pretty good baseball being played three or four days/nights a week from Marshall all the way down to Worthington, and points in-between. Believe me it would be well worth your time to check out a game or two. Area teams have a handful of games left before playos start (and their schedules are listed in this publication), so there is plenty of time to catch a game. Do yourself a favor and go spend a night at the ballpark. Beer or not, you’ll enjoy yourself.

And the walls came tumbling down Like most folks when the blanket of snow lifts its covers, we go in search of what mischief it has left behind in a hide and seek game between broken tree limbs, mud holes, and wind-twisted buildings. In true stoic Minnesota form we chant “It’s not so bad‌I remember the blizzard of 19 somethingâ€? and get to work reassuring ourselves that “It coulda been worseâ€?. Besides, the tulips and the thistles made it! We should take heart in their resilience. Then we hop on our lawnmowers or grab a ďŹ shing pole to engage in hours of repetitive eorts of casting and cutting that has the calming eect of the great Minnesota mantra.

gravel and items carried away in last year’s ood reveal themselves in odd places. There is one building and an attached wall that has seen many seasons and now is bowing. The oor is buckled and the wall leans and waves in the breeze like an old friend. It is time to say goodbye to the Livery Stable / Women’s Dressing Room. It is time to replace it with a new and more inviting structure for both a better visual image and a more comfortable place for cast members. As the skid steer pushed down the sixteen-foot high wall, I could not help but consider other walls going up and tumbling down. There were no trumpets or anyone named Joshua marching around the building. Only the loud roar of diesel and hydraulic rams celebrated the crack and crash of old timber. Like many walls, this one was more symbolic than functional. It was a façade pretending to be a complete building. It gave the illusion of an old livery stable where horses were kept and blacksmiths hammered steel. In truth, it did neither. Many walls in history have created these illusions. A tall steel or concrete or stone structure can be functional if it is well cared for and heavily manned and not too long. Many of the great walls created limited protection for those inside. The Great Wall of China took almost 14 centuries to build and was over 5500 miles long. Enemies went around and over it just the same. The 14 miles of the Walls of Constantinople (Istanbul) were well patrolled at all times but ineective against cannons. The
Sumerians’ Amorite Wall was perhaps a 100 miles long and worked for a few years until forces walked around it or over it. Hadrian’s Wall in Northern England was 73 miles long with gates every mile manned by troops. It still partly stands, but it is a curiosity rather than a functional barrier. There are other types of walls that have proved more eective. Originally Wall Street was an actual wall built to keep the Native populations out of Dutch settlements. It became a place of trade to buy and sell slaves and now, some would suggest it is a place to keep money from ever escaping to us. Another “invisible wallâ€? was a policy called “redliningâ€? where the US government in the 1930’s drew maps that color coded where lending was green (best), blue (still desirable), yellow (declining) and red (hazardous). The FHA and ďŹ nancial institutions used this to decide on loans despite other factors. Though oďŹƒcially banned almost 50 years ago, it eectively restricted people to isolated zones of poverty that were focused on non-white citizens making it impossible or outrageously expensive to borrow money. Today, white families average a net worth more than ten times that of black families and more than eight times that of Hispanic families. Because they were denied access to credit based on where they lived, its impact far outstripped any physical wall, resulting

Cost ďŹ gures for a border wall range from $6 to $60 billion depending on what numbers you want to pull out of your internet. Discussions or tirades on eectiveness of such a structure look more like a snowball ďŹ ght between children as one statistic melts before another is tossed in the face of the opponent. More than one pair of glasses must have been broken in this word smack down as it seems no one has a clear vision of the how or when or why. For a mere ďŹ ve billion you could feed a half million people for ďŹ ve years or build 20,000 homes or hire 30,000

I retreat to my snow fort and open my history text to see how and why these eorts failed or succeeded. In WWII the French built the Maginot Line, a wellfortiďŹ ed 300-mile long barrier. It was an immense, air conditioned, concrete structure with big guns, and housing for troops and munitions. It created a false sense of security. The Germans went over and around it. In Belfast, the Peace Wall was being dismantled as it fostered an “atmosphere of abnormalityâ€?. Are the walls of intolerance and prejudice we create in ourselves recreated in physical form to provide a false sense of security? The best defense is a good oense. From George Washington to Chairman Mao to several business and sports strategies, this adage is repeated as gospel. To apply this strategy, we
should ďŹ rst know who is the enemy. If we wonder why people ock to this country risking lives and all they have... If we wonder why drugs and sex traďŹƒcking see the United States of Business as a growth market‌ If we wonder why we are both feared and hated by many countries yet desired by others ‌ We are a giant Walmart. We are a nation with bipolar disorder. As Pogo said “We have met the enemy and he is us.â€? There are always casualties though many could be avoided if we learned from history and put aside our desire for personal proďŹ t and narrow confrontational, knee-jerk reactions. The Berlin Wall was an 87-mile long, heavily fortiďŹ ed wall separating East and West Berlin. On June 12th in 1987, then President Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate and challenged the Soviet Union to “Tear Down This Wallâ€?.

or repositioned later and is just to keep everything from sliding o and having to repeat the process. Business End To complete the rig, tie on a chosen hook or jig. There are many options that can be ďŹ shed under a slip oat for all sorts of species. An octopus hook in size 2 or 4 works well for walleyes, and smaller hooks like the size 6 will do the trick for crappies when suspending live bait like minnows for these predators. Adjust the position and the amount of split shot above the hook to dictate the motion of the baitďŹ sh dangling below. Generally, split shot placed closer to a hooked minnow give it less freedom of motion, and more weight will also hold it in place better but be careful not to overdo it and pull the slip oat below the surface with the added weight. Adjust the depth of the presentation by sliding the bobber stop up and down the line, moving it toward the hook for shallower presentations, and away from the hook for deeper ďŹ shing. Multispecies Options When ďŹ shing for panďŹ sh under a slip oat, a small jig (1/16 or 1/32 ounce) with a pinch of crawler will connect kids with sunnies and perch or use a long-shanked Aberdeen hook to help with removal and prevent gut-hooking of ďŹ sh to be released. Slip oat rigs are often unsung heroes for bass as well. In late summer and early fall, suspend a small krystal ash jig under a slip oat for smallmouth bass along steep breaks, and let a light breeze provide the ickering action that bronzebacks can’t resist in what’s come to be known as the oat-n-y rig, a go-to for autumn ďŹ shing. For their green cousins, rig a Senko or other soft plastic stick under a slip oat wacky-style on a circle hook and ďŹ sh it around structure or weed edges where bucketmouths lurk in summer. To give the bait its subtle action, simply pull up on the line and let it slowly fall back through the bobber to trigger ďŹ sh, while moving it slowly from position to position along a high-percentage area. It’s a great way to get kids on big bass, and the circle hook will prevent most deep hooking or damage to gills and only requires the rod to be gently pulled back while reeling to set the hook. Set It Up Rods with a soft tip are ideal for slip oat setups. This helps absorb some of the energy on the cast and provides an even hookset when sweeping back the rod when the slip oat goes under. Most often, there’s no need to jerk or snap a hookset on a ďŹ sh biting under a slip oat, especially when plain hooks are being used. To set the hook when the oat disappears, reel down until the weight of the ďŹ sh can be felt and sweep the rod back ďŹ rmly while continuing to bring in line. Longer rods make casting slip oat rigs easier, so consider a setup that’s around 7 feet in length, with many anglers going even longer to make eective casts that don’t sling the bait o as the rig splashes down. Slip oats are far and away the better option for catching ďŹ sh of all kinds at all depths. Getting these on young anglers’ lines (or yours) early on will help catch more ďŹ sh in just about any situation that calls for a suspended minnow, leech or crawler. Experiment with the oerings at various depths and make this rig the staple in your tackle box, even if it’s not the ďŹ rst bobber everyone thinks of when their minds turn to summer ďŹ shing.

Murray County garden tour is July 11 Make plans now to attend the 2019 Murray County Master Gardeners’ Summer Garden Tour on Thursday, July 11, from 3:30-8 p.m. in the Wirock/ Iona/ Chandler area. Hosts this year include Nate and Suzi Gengler, Cory and Karen Brown, Alexis Fransen, Doug and Grace Hart, Pat and Lisa Kremer – The Barn at Corabelle, and Sharon and Jim Peterson. Vegetable and ower gardens will be included in the tour, as well examples of unique landscaping features. Lake Benton Opera House presents Shrek The Musical The big green ogre is making an appearance in Lake Benton. Shrek, Princess Fiona, and many of the fairy tale characters will be gracing the stage during Shrek The Musical this summer at the Lake Benton Opera House. Two weekends of shows are planned. Evening performances at 7:30 p.m. are planned for July 25, 26, 27, 31 and August 1, 2, & 3. Matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. on July 28 and August 3 & 4. This year’s cast for Shrek The Musical includes 58 performers from 19 surrounding communities.
Currie Fourth of July celebration features IV Play Currie will host their annual Fourth of July celebration this year July 3 & 4. The celebration kicks o with a street dance featuring “IV Playâ€? on July 3 from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Thursday, July 4, will have a full day of activities. For a little competition, there will be a volleyball tournament and a Bean Bag Tournament at City Park. Bavarian Blast celebrates Bavarian heritage In its 14th year, the Bavarian Blast celebrates Bavarian heritage and culture with a weekend long festival in New Ulm. Attendees will be surrounded by all things German including German food, German-American music, Schell’s Beer, uniquely German contests and the Bavarian Blast parade. Held July 19-21 in New Ulm, it is known as the biggest party of the summer to the locals. Musical entertainment will be prevalent all weekend long, including a pre-blast evening of music on July 18 featuring Heide and The Good Ole Boys, Transit Authority: A Tribute to Chicago and Rumors & Dreams: The Music of Fleetwood Mac. Friday the music starts at 11 a.m. with the Concord Singers and runs all day with a variety of acts including Mollie B., Alpensterne, Bockfest Boys, Wild Angels and wraps up with I am, He Said - A Celebration of Neil Diamond (Matt Vee Family & Friends). Saturday is full of activities kicking o with the Bavarian Blast 5K/10K at 8 a.m. Music begins at 11 a.m. with the Concord Singers. The dog races will be at 1:30 p.m., followed by the barrel race at 3:30 p.m., the sauerkraut eating contest at 5:30 p.m. and the stein holding contest at 7 p.m. Musical entertainment will continue all day wrapping up with Big Top Radio starting at 10 p.m. The music continues on Sunday with
the Original German Band at 8:30 a.m. There will be a Polka Church Service with Mollie B. at 10 a.m. Entertainment continues through the day. The Bavarian Blast Parade will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The weekend includes a wide variety of activities for the kids too. All kids 16 and under have free admittance to the Bavarian Blast. Kids will love the balloon animals, bounce castle and air slide. They are encouraged to join the sauerkraut eating competition if they feel daring. In addition to the many activities, the weekend features a wide variety of German food including bratwurst, pork schnitzel, German potato salad, spatzle, sauerkraut, apple strudel and more. Red-stone quarry had immense significance to native peoples The ďŹ rst highly recorded exploration of Southwest Minnesota was that of George Catlin in 1836. According to the article A Garden of the Red Gods, “everywhere the artist had gone in his travels, the smoking of the longstemmed Indian pipe was an important ritual in practically every phase of peace and war.â€? Catlin noted that in all the native peoples he visited, the pipe bowls were invariably made of the same red clay stone from a single quarry. The Lawrence Taliaferro papers state that on Sunday, 21st August, 1836‌Catlin the painter and Mr. Wood an Englishman go o this day to the Pipestone Quarry.â€? Shortly after departure from the St. Peter’s (Minnesota) River near the present site of St. Peter they made a brief stop at the small trading post of LeBlanc (Traverse des Sioux). Here Catlin and Wood were met by a large party of Dakota whose intent was to stop the small party from going any closer to the sacred quarry. Part of the Dakota dialogue is recorded as follows: “Brothers – I Philander Prescott speak strong-

Balaton gears up for annual Fun Fest Balaton will host its annual Fun Fest July 4-7 along Highway 14. The weekend kicks o with Little Miss and Mr. Balaton Thursday evening. Friday’s activities include the putting contest, as well as a burger feed and a variety of entertainment. The evening concludes with ďŹ reworks over Lake Yankton at 10 p.m. Saturday is full of family friendly activities. The day begins with the Fun Run at 8 a.m. Glenn’s Tractor Show will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day also includes a 2-person best ball tournament at the Balaton Bay Golf Course, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, inatables, Wendy’s Wiggle Jiggle Jam, Wildrose Ponies, a petting zoo and the kids’ tractor pull. The Grand Parade will be held at 2 p.m., followed by entertainment from the Mobile Heart Beats during dinner at the lake. Classic Draft Horse Show returns Slayton will be host to the annual Murray County Classic Draft Horse Show July 1214. This three-day event brings nearly 100 horses to the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton. And the small-town intimacy of the pageant continues to be very well-received by outsiders. The pageant remains pure and has stuck to its country roots, all the while avoiding any corporate inuences that could potentially rob the event of its heart and soul. Ankrum said she has seen third and fourth generations come together over the pageant — grandmothers returning with daughters, those daughters bringing their daughters, etc. “The message is good for everyone, but you can only appeal to so many people,â€? Richards said. “We can try and branch out; it would be nice to catch a little dierent clientele to go along with what we already have.â€?

He wrote of the Coteau Des Prairie (or Highland of the Prairies) in these words: “Our approach to it was from the east, and the ascent, for the distance of twenty-ďŹ ve miles, over a continued succession of slopes and terraces, almost imperceptibly rising one above another, that seemed to lift us to a great height. The singular character of this majestic mound continues on the west side, in its descent toward the Missouri. There is not a tree or bush to be seen from the highest summit of the ridge, though the eye may range east and west, almost to boundless extent, over a surface with a short grass, that is green at one’s feet, and about him, but changing to blue in the distance, like nothing but the blue and vastness of the ocean.â€? “There is a sublime grandeur in these scenes as they are presented here, which must be seen and felt to understand‌ Many feels here, and startles at the thrilling sensation, the forces of “illimitable freedomâ€? – his body and his mind both seem to have entered a new element – the former as free as the very wind it inhales and the other as expanded and inďŹ nite as the boundless imagery that is spread in distance around him. groundâ€? to be very descriptive and informative. “The Great Spirit, at an ancient period, here called the Indian nations together, and standing on the precipice of the red pipe stone rock, broke from its wall a piece, and made a huge pipe by turning it in his hand, which he smoked over them, to the North, the South, the East, and the West; and told them that this tone was red – that it was their esh – that they must use it for their pipes of peace – that it belonged to them all---.â€? “The color of the pipe-stone varied from a pale greyish-red to a dark blood-red, and in some instances was attractively dappled red and gray. When freshly quarried it was suďŹƒciently soft to be readily carved into such shapes as desired with stone knives and drilled with primitive hand drills. The structure of the pipe-stone varied from ten to twenty inches in thickness, the bands of pure, ďŹ ne-grained material best-suited for the manufacture of pipes seldom measuring more than three or four inches in thickness. This stratum was embedded between massive layers of compact quartzite, which dipped slightly to the eastward. With the stone implements in common use in early times, the process of working the quarry was a very tedious one. This particular quarry was not the only place where the pipe-stone was to be found, but it was the only location known to the Indians where it existed in appreciable quantity or was procured under religious sanction.â€? Samples of the red pipe-stone were taken by Catlin to New York. They were later sent to a mineralogist in Boston who recognized the samples as “a new mineral compoundâ€?. To this day the material is commonly known as “Catliniteâ€?, a lasting tribute to the man who ďŹ rst introduced the sacred pipestone to the rest of the world. In 1855, nineteen years after Catlin’s visit to pipestone, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was to pen his famous narrative poem The Song of Hiawatha. No sooner was the poem published than its popularity was assured – although controversy did surround the metre and various incidents. Without a doubt Longfellow relied heavily upon the writings of George Catlin while writing chapter 1 “The Peace Pipeâ€? of his still famous poem. Chapter 1 “The Peace Pipeâ€? “On the Mountains of the Prairie, On the great Red Pipe-Stone Quarry, Gitche Manito, The Mighty, He the Master of Life, descending, On the red crags of the quarry Stood erect, and called the nations, Called the tribes of men together.â€?
