‘Mais returning Ingalls’ to Walnut Grove In the autumn of 1975, NBCTelevision had no bigger hit than “Little House on the Prairie,” then entering its second season.

So it was big news when actress Karen Grassle, who played Caroline Ingalls in “Little House” opposite Michael Landon, visited Walnut Grove on Sept. 18, 1975, to film a promotional piece.

The actress is returning to Walnut Grove July 17-18 for her first visit to the banks of Plum Creek in 41 years. See story page eight.

What’s not to like about Mound Creek Park, which has a swimming beach, boat launch, two picnic shelters, 9-hole disc golf course, sand volleyball court, hiking trail, fishing pier, and a waterfall?

Mound Creek Park: A piece of heaven

The southwest corner of Brown County boasts two “must see” destinations.

Jeffers Petroglyphs is well known as a Minnesota Historical Society site.

Nearby Mound Creek Park may not be as familiar, but local people know where to find the park that offers a variety of ways to relax.

Compared to the petroglyphs that have been in existence for thousands of years, this park is a mere youngster. Gary Schenk, retired farmer and park caretaker for 23 years, remembers herding cows for the neighbor in the pasture that has been transformed into a beautiful park.

“I dug holes for all these trees,” he said, referring to the 500 plus trees growing

along the narrow road that borders the south and west sides of the park. He was assisted by a sentence-to-serve crew that still helps each spring. Schenk, who lives adjacent to the west side of the park, arrives on his motorcycle each morning to open gates and tend to park maintenance. Park hours are 8 a.m. until sunset from April 15 to October 15.

Schenk said that a friend once told him, “You’ve got a piece of heaven here.”

When chatting with Schenk, it’s easy to sense that he agrees with this appraisal of the park.

Birth of Mound Creek Park Early in the 1960s, area farmers expressed a need for flood control resulting from spring meltdowns and

heavy rainfalls. The Wellner-Hageman Flood Control Dam, dedicated August 15, 1993, eliminated some of the flooding problems. The completed project contains 316 acres, including the dam, a 70-acre permanent pool, sediment basins and the park.

The Brown and Cottonwood County’s Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) sponsored the project. Entities such as the State of Minnesota, Capital Bonding and Brown County SWCD provided funding.

Park Attractions Disc golf, a sport growing in popularity, attracts golfers to a nine-hole course designed by a professional disc golfer from the Twin Cities. Skyler Martin,

from nearby Jeffers, enthusiastically shared the nuances of the sport. He used conventional golf terms even though he tosses a special Frisbee rather than hitting a golf ball.

“It’s just like regular golf,” said Martin.

“I have 10 discs. I’ve lost quite a few.”

Some of the discs he has found missed the mark for other golfers. The Frisbeelike discs come in four categories: driver, mid range, short distance, and putter.

“We were one of the first to have a disc golf course,” said park caretaker Schenk.

The park is easy to find whether driving from the north or south on Hwy. 71 between Hwys. 14 and 30. Turn east on County Road 10, drive 2 miles and watch for a sign pointing to the park.

Turn left (north) and drive ½ mile. Park facilities and grounds are maintained well, so visitors will not be disappointed when they see the park for the first time.

Native prairie, gallery & history share serendipity in Luverne

Nature photographer Jim Brandenburg’s early life on the prairie near Luverne, his college art degree, and his stint as a newspaper photographer were the beginning of a career which has taken him and his cameras around the world and has yet sustained his tie to opposite corners of Minnesota— Luverne and Ely, where he has located his galleries.

A turn to the east off Hwy. 75 and onto Luverne Street brings into view the Rock County Courthouse, which is located next to the 106-year-old former jail and sheriff’s house. These two stately buildings made of Sioux quartzite stand together in the Courthouse Square, which also includes a Veterans’ Memorial Park.

The gallery, which shares the same entrances to the Rock County Jail Building with the Herreid Military Museum and the Chamber of Commerce office, is located on the lower and first floors. The Chamber of Commerce office is on the first floor, while the Herreid Military Museum is located on the second and third floor and portrays the bravery of those who served this nation from the Civil War to the present. Warren G. Herreid II and Jeannine M. Rivet through their K.A.H.R Foundation generously provided funding for the remodeling of this building and the museum so the stories of Rock County veterans could be preserved for the future.

The walls of the lower and first floor

are decorated with Brandenburg’s photos which visitors may enjoy and/or purchase. On the first floor visitors may sit and relax and in one area may watch a video of Brandenburg discussing his works. The income from the sale of his photos supports Touch the Sky Prairie. The gallery opened in 1999, and soon after Jim, his wife Judy, and others established a foundation, which is dedicated to educate, promote, preserve, and expand native prairie in Southwest Minnesota. In 2001, when 355 acres of unplowed prairie near the farm where Jim grew up was put up for sale, the Brandenburg Prairie Foundation and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service bought it. Today Touch the Sky Prairie includes

a total of approximately 972 acres of land which includes a Sioux quartzite ridgeline, a small waterway, and more than 300 native prairie plants. This land is now the first Northern Tallgrass Prairie Refuge in Northwest Iowa and Southwest Minnesota.

The Herreid Military Museum records the bravery and dedication of Rock County military men and women who have served their country from the Civil War through today’s military action in the Middle East. Attractively lighted glass cases display artifacts from each war including Purple Heart awards, death certificates, uniforms, and weapons.

The old jail and sheriff’s house (left) and courthouse in Luverne were both constructed from Sioux quartzite. Bars from old jail cells were used in creating today’s decorative iron rails.

For example, one showcase features soldiers who gave their all for the United States. A picture of three-time Purple Heart recipient Gene Boyer from Round Lake inspired Terrie Gulden also of Round Lake to create a replica of that scene for the museum. A soldier sits by a two-story bunker in Vietnam, and near that display is a jeep. Throughout the museum are paintings including the background of the bunker scene which Edgerton Christian High School art teacher Blair Wegener painted free hand.

A terrace has been added to the original building which has a strip of pink Jasper quartzite, and the decorative metal work for the terrace was created from the old jail cells. As a visitor relaxes

on the terrace and looks southwest, s/he sees the Veterans’ Memorial Park. On a bench a statue of a veteran in uniform sits and looks off as though remembering his military experiences.

Benches representing all branches of the service surround a marker. Around the marker and along the walkway to a cannon are pavers on which the names of veterans have been engraved.

A visit to the Brandenburg Gallery leads to a visit to the Herreid Military Museum and to the Veterans’ Memorial Park and ends at Touch the Sky Prairie.

‘Pouty lips’ can happen among best of friends The guys were gathering at the fish cleaning shack and judging by the laughter and volume coming from the shack, everyone had the same success we did. We had caught our limit of Canadian walleyes and assumed everyone had a happy day.

My assumption was not correct. As I strolled toward the shack I met a newcomer to our party, and before he could say anything, I said: “It was a great day . Did you have any fun?” He never stopped walking. He just commented in passing that he had not caught a fish! I couldn’t believe what I heard, so when I reached the cleaning shack I asked the other guys who were fishing with him why his bottom lip was sticking out so far.

They replied: “We were really nailing the walleyes with crawlers and bottom bouncers and he refused to fish with a bottom bouncer and never caught a fish!” He got over his pouty lips the next day, but he refused to go to Canada with us again!

• • • Pouty lips can happen on a fishing trip even when guys aren’t fishing.

Like when guys are playing a game of friendly cards after a day of fishing.

Friendly card games often involve snacks and drinks during the games, and when the snacks run out often the drinks do not. So, in one incident I observed a bunch of guys playing a game of pinochle for a modest amount of money as they enjoyed snacks and drinks. One of the players was very accomplished at the game and was thoroughly enjoying kicking the tar out of all the other players until one of the players who got tired of losing and having the champion player gloating over his success said: “Why don’t we play a little poker for awhile?” Guess which card player got a case of the pouty lips and decided to go to bed?

• • • • As we approached the Roiling waters of the Winnipeg River on the ManitobaOntario border, we could see the backs of the northern pike feasting on the black swimming gobs of minnows just below the falls. We tied on some casting spoons and started flipping them toward the moving water. Slam bam, rip and run, the northerns were absolutely nuts to bite anything shiny. My son, who was 10 years old at the, time started counting and suddenly he blurted out: “Dad, that’s 10 in a row I have caught!” Our friend Craig was casting, too. More than 10 times during his cast and retrieve he had said: “There’s one ----- lost it! Oh there’s another one. Oops, it is gone!”

At that moment my son said: “Almost made it to 20, but I just lost one.” That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Craig’s face lost its smile and his lip began to protrude, My son noticed it and quickly suggested that they trade fishing rigs. So Craig took Paul’s and Paul took Craig’s. You know where this is going! On the first cast with Craig’s rig Paul nailed another northern. Craig finally caught one himself and made a deal with Paul to use Paul’s rig during the remainder of the trip.

• • • Dave and I never talked much when we fished together and we both enjoyed it very much. We had experienced lots of fishing success, so our boss decided to put John in between us in our boat because John had developed a case of pouty lips the day before while fishing

with the boss, and the boss thought John needed a change of scenery. John plopped himself down between Dave and me and we headed off to Dean Creek for another tuna boat day of northern pike fishing. The boss had encouraged Dave and me to troll and not cast for fish with John.

As you know, trolling is not exactly rocket science. You just tie on a flashing spoon a pike would like, let out about 75 spins on your reel, and sit there and ride around slowly pulling the spoon, or whatever behind the boat. You don’t have to set the hook when a fish strikes.

All you have to do is reel it in. The fish pretty much hooks itself. The worst thing you can do is attempt to set the hook which causes slack line and then the fish swims off the hook.

We trolled. Dave and I caught one northern after another and threw them back. John got hits, set the hook with a big sweeping swing of the rod that caused lots of slack, and when he started to reel the fish would be gone. Neither Dave nor I ever said anything to John about his lack of success. Matter-offact, we seldom said anything to each other about anything. Midway through the very long afternoon, John suddenly burst out: “I know what you guys are doing. You aren’t talking to me because I haven’t caught a fish!”

Just think Dave and I had caused a severe case of pouty lip by not saying or doing anything.

• • • The moral of these stories: If you catch fish, you won’t have pouty lips.

‘Bavarian Blast’ returns to New Ulm

Home ice cream delivery keyed early Schwan’s growth

Summer in southwest Minnesota has a different meaning for everyone, but most people this summer will consume ice cream, which is especially tasty on hot summer days. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90 percent of the nation’s population. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, about 10.3 percent of all the milk produced

by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.

The history of ice cream dates back to around 1800.

Until 1800, ice cream remained a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented. Manufacturing ice cream soon became an industry in America, pioneered in 1851 by a Baltimore milk dealer named Jacob Fussell. In 1874, the American soda fountain shop and the profession of the “soda jerk” emerged with the invention of the ice cream soda.

Before the development of modern refrigeration, ice cream was a luxury reserved for special occasions.

Making ice cream was quite laborious; ice was cut from lakes and ponds during the winter and stored in holes in the ground, or in wood-frame or brick ice houses, insulated by straw. Ice cream is made from cream, with added flavors and sweeteners. This mixture is quickly frozen while it is stirred, so that large ice crystals do not form.

Like other American industries, ice cream production increased because of technological innovations, including steam power, mechanical refrigeration, the homogenizer, electric power and motors, packing machines, and new freezing processes and equipment.

In the 1940s through the 1970s, ice cream production was relatively constant in the United States. As more prepackaged ice cream was sold through supermarkets, traditional ice cream parlors and soda fountains started to disappear. Ice cream became popular throughout the world in the second half of the 20th century after cheap refrigeration became common.

It was during the time of refrigeration that the Schwan Food Company started and grew in Marshall.

The story of Schwan’s begins with Paul Schwan and his time working at the Marshall Ice Cream Company.

Matt Neisen and Matt Langenfeld started their business in 1919 as the Marshall Creamery Company.

They sold the building and butter making to the Producers Co-op in 1924. In 1924, they focus on making ice cream and started the Marshall Ice Cream Company.

The name of their ice cream was called “Perfection”.

Paul Schwan, served in the German army during WWI, immigrated to Marshal1 in 1921. He worked for the railroad first and then starts working at the Marshall Creamery Company. In 1924, he married Alma Slelter and they had three sons, Alfred, Marvin, and Robert.

In 1926, he becomes foreman of the Marshall Ice Cream Company.

In 1927, 85,000 gallons of ice cream is produced and the company is growing. In 1940, Paul and his partner

Matt Neisen buy Jeff’s Dairy, which had been owned

by Earl Jefferson. With this purchase, the company adds milk bottling to the operation. The milk bottling production is called Neisen and Schwan Dairy. In 1946, Paul bought out Neisen’s half of the dairy, and in 1948, begins operating it as Schwan’s Dairy. The enterprise included a dairy store and café in front of the plant, Schwan’s Dairy & Lunch. Soon after purchasing Neisen’s half of the dairy, the Schwan family starts producing ice cream. Matt Neisen continued making Perfection ice cream in Marshall until the 1960s, when he sold his interest to the Langenfeld family in South Dakota.

their customers on their dairy routes, the Schwan family found it hard to turn a profit. A crisis arose when the federal government initiated a price freeze in 1951 to help curb inflation. For Schwan’s, the price freeze meant the company had to sell its finished products for less than the cost of the ingredients. Paul’s son Marvin, was determined to pull the company back from the brink by thinking of ways to find a more cost effective way of selling the ice cream.

Marvin realized that the statewide price freeze on dairy products did not apply uniformly across the counties. The price allowed for ice cream in counties north of Marshall was 14 cents a gallon higher than allowed in Lyon County. Marvin realized that rather than selling the ice cream wholesale to retail stores, take the ice cream directly to the farmers who had home freezers.

Marvin drafted his ideas and plans on paper, and on March 18, 1852, Marvin loaded the truck he bought with 14 gallons of ice cream and headed north of Marshall.

He sold every gallon, and the customers appreciated the home delivery service. The farmers were eager to buy ice cream because it saved them a trip to town and eliminated the problem of getting the product home from the store before it melted.

This story is not the end but only beginning of the Schwan Food Company. The company was built on providing quality products and personal service, and the company grew substantially and continues to operate as a multi-billion company headquartered still in Marshall. ‘Ma Ingalls’ return to Walnut Grove will be first since 1975

It’s been 41 years since Karen Grassle last stepped foot on the same soil as the character she played for eight seasons on television.

Grassle, widely known for her portrayal of Caroline “Ma” Ingalls in the hit television series Little House on the

Prairie, returns to the real Walnut Grove on July 16-17, Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s unbelievable that it’s been 40 years,” she said during a telephone interview. “I’m really excited to be coming back. It’s going to be so much fun.”

Grassle made her previous trip to Walnut Grove on Sept. 18, 1975, to film

promotional shots for the television series, which had just begun its second season. The actress has a favorable recollection of that day.

“I remember the day I was in Walnut Grove very well,” Grassle said. “I had been on a promotional tour for the show all over the country with some production workers. We flew into Minneapolis from Philadelphia and then picked up some camera people from a Minneapolis television station (NBC).”

As the group was driving into Walnut Grove, Grassle started to sense the town was welcoming her with open arms.

“There was a covered wagon outside of town in a field by the highway we were coming in on,” Grassle recalls. “It had a sign on it that said: ‘Welcome Ma, From Your Farm Family Friends’. And there was a big sign in town that read ‘Welcome Home Ma’ on it.

“The whole town turned out and they were so excited about all the attention coming their way. We then went to a town meeting room and had a big lunch.

I even remember that we had ham and potato salad and other things. It was so much fun.”

But Grassle will find that a lot of things have changed since her visit. As the television series gained more and more popularity, so did the tiny town of Walnut Grove that sits nestled in the southwest potion of the state.

“When I was there, it was nothing like what I was told it is now,” she said.

“There was no museum (the original museum had actually opened four

months before her visit, but was located in the back two rooms of a vacant gas station building and was nothing like the museum is today), no pageant, and just a plaque out at Plum Creek.”

Grassle found her first trek to the Midwest “very thrilling” and nothing like she thought it would be.

“The closest I had ever been to the prairie was Cincinnati,” she laughed.

“And that was nothing like what I saw when I went to Walnut Grove.”

Grassle’s visit to the real Plum Creek gave her a better perspective of what life was like when the Ingalls lived there.

“I really got a chance to see what Caroline Ingalls saw out on the prairie,” Grassle told. “And that was that you could see land as far as the eye could see.”

On Saturday, July 16, Grassle will sign autographs at the museum from 10-11:30 and again from 2-3:30 p.m., and then will speak on stage from 7:30-8:30 p.m. prior to the pageant. And on Sunday, July 17, Grassle will have a photograph session at the museum from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by an autograph session from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“We are very excited to have Karen Grassle back in Walnut Grove this summer,” said Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum Director Amy Ankrum. “Fans have been asking to see her here for years and we are very pleased that this is coming together.”

recapping her life from childhood until the conclusion of the Little House on the Prairie series. Her book follows in the footsteps of other Little House cast members that have written a book referencing the famous TV show such as Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls), Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls) and, more recently, Charlotte Stewart (Miss Eva Beadle).

“It’s just about done,” said Grassle, who is writing the book on her own. “I hope to get it to a publisher in August.”

Grassle, 68, still keeps busy with her acting. She recently concluded the filming of an independent horror movie called “Lasso” about insane and bloodthirsty rodeo cowboys.

And she is also starring in the theatrical version of “Driving Miss Daisy” in Richmond, VA in August, portraying the same Mrs. Daisy Werthan role that Jessica Tandy won an Academy Award for in the movie by the same name in 1990.

Grassle grew up in California and currently lives in El Cerrrito, just two miles from her birthplace.

Grassle’s schedule did not allow for her to make the 40th anniversary Little House Cast Reunion in 2014 when 11 cast members were present.

But she still keeps in contact with many of the Little House cast members either through reunion shows or social media. Stewart, who played Walnut Grove schoolteacher Miss Beadle on the series, lives 30 minutes from Grassle.

“We all have built a special bond,” Grassle remarked.

Grassle is often asked what her favorite Little House episode was. She said many of her fans feel the episode “Matter of Faith” in season two is her favorite. In that episode, Caroline develops a life-threatening infection in her leg and turns to the Bible for comfort.

However, Grasssle is quick to point out that her favorite is a season seven episode called “Oleson vs. Oleson”.

“That’s the one where the women try to get their husbands to sign a petition (regarding sharing property rights with their wives),” Grassle recalls. “And Caroline and the other women all end up living with Mrs. Oleson (in Nellie’s Hotel) while the men are left to cook and clean and watch the children.”

When Grassle first landed the job as Caroline Ingalls, she admits that she hadn’t heard of Laura Ingalls Wilder, nor had she read any of her books.

“Of course, I’ve read them all now,” she reveals. “I read them as soon as I was cast. I’m surprised I hadn’t read them before because those are the types of books that I read as a young girl.”

Grassle looks back with fondness at the eight years she spent on the Little House television series.

“When I watch the show now, I’m always so pleased at the quality of work from everyone,” she says. “Everyone worked so hard.”

The only regret she has it that she didn’t keep something from the show as a memento.

“I wish I had kept my old boots and my sun bonnet,” she admits. “I have no idea what happened to them.”

With or without the boots and bonnet, she’ll always be “Ma Ingalls” to the fans of the show.

Jeffers plans ‘Outlaw Days’

Programs scheduled during July at the Jeffers Petroglyphs site are: • Saturday, July 2, 1 to 4 p.m., “Make an Arrowhead Day.” Explore how early American Indians used projectile points for survival. Observe a flintknapper demonstrate how to create stone projectile points (arrowheads) and then make one to take home.

•Saturday, July 9, 5 to 7 p.m., “A New Look at the Carvings.” Explore the rock face in bare feet to see some of the newly uncovered petroglyphs that are located away from the regular path, An interpreter will be available to answer questions and direct visitors.

Over the past several years, an extensive conservation project identified an additional 3,000 petroglyphs, which had previously been covered in lichen.

• Saturday, July 16, 1 to 4 p.m., “Archaeology Day,” Discover first-hand

how archaeologists study artifacts from the past. Observe original projectile points (arrowheads) and go through the archaeological process to find out how old they are, what type of stone they were made from, where they came from, and how they were used.

It’s hard to beat Shad Rap trolling

John and Owen Moline heard the walleyes were biting on Lake Sarah in late May, so they hitched up their boat and headed six miles north of their farm to give it a try. John being the dad, was charged with choosing a fishing method that would be fun, effective, and most of all not boring, so he decided he and Owen would troll using shad raps from the Rapala collection.

Owen will be going into 3rd grade so he is at the prime learning time for fishing.

He was coming off a fishing outing that was capped by him boating a very nice black crappie, and he showed he really likes fishing. Success is a prime element in encouraging kids to fish, so wise parents make fishing easy for kids, and trolling is the best entry level walleye fishing method for kids.

I remember being eight-years-old sitting in the middle of a rented wooden boat trolling to the beat of a one-cylinder 4.6 horsepower Champion outboard motor piloted by my dad. I was pulling a green perch colored diving bait known as a Cisco Kid on a small lake with the name of Midge located between Cass Lake and Bemidji, Minnesota. The shallow northern lake was full of lily pads and northern pike that weighed 2 to 3 lbs. I missed a lot of hits and caught a lot of lily pads, but I also caught my limit of northern pike and my grand- father fried them up for supper. Receiving the picture of Owen and his walleye, brought back the memory for me.

In the year 1982, a company in the United States introduced the newest bait from Rapala.

The bait is known as a shad rap.

For over 30 years, it has been the most popular bait ever introduced in the United States, and Owen proved it again by catching a nice walleye on a #7 crayfish- colored shad rap; the same shad rap that his dad uses to catch Master Angler walleyes and northern pike in Canada.

Lake Sarah is known to have a big healthy population of perch, and this is especially true this year. I mention that fact because a lot of fisherman have good success with the perch patterned shad rap on Sarah, but Owen caught his walleyes on the crayfish pattern which proved that the action of the shad rap is what the success is all about.

We now have line counter reels with anti-reverse features built in along with good quality drag systems, so young anglers will never experience the rapped knuckles that I did when a northern hit and spun the reel backwards in a blur. In the old days, the drag system consisted of the fisherman pushing his thumb down on the line on the reel. Now all a kid has to remember is to keep the rod tip pointed at the sky and to reel. When the fish decides to show his fighting ability, the drag system will keep track of the fish as it travels away on an escape run.

Trolling allows you to cover a lot of water and you can catch any fish that swims in any lake by using the method called trolling. And if you can’t decide what to pull behind your boat when you are trolling, it is pretty hard to go wrong if you choose a shad rap. There you have it.

Trolling is the ticket for successful fishing with beginners.

Chores & camping go together Upper Sioux is among few state parks that offer horse camp

The aroma of recently-cooked campfire meals wafted through the air on a gentle breeze. A dozen or so campers then mounted their horses for their postmeal trek through the scenic trails at the Upper Sioux Agency State Park south of Granite Falls.

Except for the occasional snorting of a pair of horses left behind, the camp became quiet as a bucket of oats as the riders took off on steeds down the trail.

This isn’t just any ordinary campground situated in the main part of the 1,323-acre state park. This is a campground designed solely for horses and their riders. Forty campsites are designated for the equestrian set, including six in an overflow section, located one-half mile west of the main entrance to Upper Sioux Agency State Park.

Upper Sioux Agency is one of only 13 state parks in Minnesota that offer a Horse Camp.

“It’s beautiful here,” said one rider/ camper, finishing his last bite of a hamburger while his horse chomped feed out of a bag hanging from a tiepost a few yards away. “It’s so peaceful here, too. We’re at a nice state park, yet we feel like we’re the only ones here because the horse camp is secluded from the rest of the campers in the main park. But it’s still close enough to the main camp if you need anything like firewood or something.”

The Upper Sioux Agency State Park, including the horse camp, was built in 1963. The horse trail, which is shared by hikers, is 16 miles long and riders can spend a good portion of the day on the trail not seeing the same scenery twice.

By having a camp to go back to after a lengthy ride, it allows the horse and rider a chance to kick back and relax or cook a meal before going for another ride that day or the next day.

“It’s a lot easier than packing everything up, including the horses, and going home or to another camp,” another camper explained. “This way, you can stay put as long as you like, just like regular camping without horses.”

Each individual campsite comes with familiar amenities such as a fire pit and a picnic table. Five of the sites offer electrical hookups. And there is a central water supply, garbage area and restrooms. What’s unfamiliar with this type of camp is the manure bunkers

There’s comfy surprise behind RF storefront

A bed & breakfast (B & B) has three common characteristics: a unique history, special location and delicious home-cooked breakfasts. The friendly hostess sets an attractive table to serve specialties of the house. While guests enjoy the delicacies, the hostess may share little-known facts about the building.

Vintage Inn sits on a corner along Hwy. 71 in downtown Redwood Falls.

Not your conventional location for a B & B, but guests are in for a surprise.

From the sidewalk, the only indication that you are entering a B & B at 103 E. 2nd Street rather than a specialty shop is the black awning “Vintage Inn Bed & Breakfast” shading the storefront-style windows.

A “common area” welcomes visitors after crossing the threshold. This relaxing area, while offering overnight guests a lounge to relax in, can be rented on a daily basis for special gatherings such as a bridal show. A kitchen, powder room and dining room are nearby.

Steep stair steps in a B & B can discourage potential guests who are unable to navigate steps. The Vintage Inn addresses that challenge by providing the Falls Room just off the kitchen on the first floor. The Victoria Room includes a decorative fireplace and whirlpool tub. The Sunroom

All guest rooms contain queen beds.

“The original building was torn down to make room for Highway 71.

The owner, Mr. Thorp, then rebuilt in 1919 and that’s the building we have today,” said manager Amber Stormo.

The first building started out as a photo studio when it was built in the early 1900s. A photography business continued to occupy the new, smaller structure. The early ‘80s saw the second story converted to a private apartment, but photography continued on the first floor.

Waterfront Properties

The Vintage Inn is not your typical Bed & Breakfast.

Current owners, Steve and Jaci Gramstad, bought the building after it had been renovated and transformed into a B & B. Amber, Steve’s daughter, lives in a basement apartment and cheerfully performs all the duties of a hostess. The Vintage Inn opened in May 2013, and she began serving as manager in July that year.

Railroad art to brighten Monte

An idle railroad car will soon be transformed into a historical centerpiece in Montevideo.

The City of Montevideo offered space for the project just south of the Milwaukee Road Heritage Depot at the entrance to Main Street in downtown Montevideo. A mural will be painted onto the outside of the railroad car sometime this summer.

The railroad car to be used for the project was donated to the city by the Milwaukee Railroad Heritage Center.

The Montevideo Arts Project (Map) committee had been pondering a way to continue the themes that preserve the historical value of Montevideo.

“The group wanted to do something different than their first project, which was a simple mural,” said Kristi Link Fernholz, senior planner for the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission. “They were looking at a couple different three-dimensional projects, and this was the one that got a planning grant from Southwest Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC).”

In order to assist them in working with artists for ideas and concepts in regards to the proposed project, the MAP committee received a small planning grant from SMAC. The MAP committee then received several designs from various artists and eventually chose those designs submitted

by Liliana Payne, an accomplished mural artist from Minneapolis, to be painted on the railroad car.

“No one will be able to see the two sides all at once so I wanted each side to be totally different,” Payne explained.

“I looked at the history of the town and wanted pay homage to something from the Golden Age of Montevideo with milling and agriculture. And for the other side of the train, I looked at ads from the Milwaukee Railroad over the years and came up with a design pertaining to the

railroad.

After securing Payne as its artist, MAP recently was given $20,000 in grant funds from SMAC for the project. The group is now committed to raising the required funds to match the grant and to prepare the site including the costs of moving, sandblasting, preparing and priming the railroad car for the mural design.

“I believe public art projects unify communities and creates a more welcoming space, as well as transform a space to one of beauty and expression,” said Fernholz. “Public art engages the community and creates stories for the generations.”

• • • Payne, a native of Morris who has been painting murals for 13 years, is excited to get started on the project. She has painted several murals, including a 3,000-square foot mural for the City of St. Cloud as a backdrop for its central bus transit system.

Even though this will be the first time Payne has done a mural on a train car, painting on unusual surfaces is not uncommon to her.

“If you have a weird or unusual surface and you want something painted on it, I’m the one to call,” Payne laughed. “I’ve done a 3D mural at a Rain Forest Café in Niagara Falls that had walls shaped like carved rocks. And I recently painted a set of pianos in downtown Minneapolis; one with all fruits and vegetables on it and the other with lit neon signs all over it.”

Payne welcomes the public to assist in painting the first coat on the train, and also during the first few days of painting, particularly at night when she will possibly project the drawing onto the railroad car.

“I think it’s important to get the community involved,” she said. “There are two ways I can go about this; either by projecting the image onto the train with a large overhead projector or by drawing an enormous grid on it. I’m not sure which way I’ll go yet.”

Payne uses Nova Color acrylic paint on her murals because of their high pigment concentration, color fastness and weather resistance. The painting will then be finished with an “isolation coat” that will separate it from the final varnishes, which allows for graffitiproofing.

Although a definite date has not been set for Payne to begin showcasing her talent, it’s expected to be around late July.

“They would like the project to be completed around the end of August,” Payne said.

The MAP committee is excited to have Payne as its muralist based on her previous quality work, some of which can be viewed on her website www. gildedlili.com.

“Liliana comes with a lot of energy, experience and talent,” said Fernholz.

“She will work with the community to create this amazing piece of art, so watch for events scheduled when she is onsite. This project will continue to build the energy and excitement for public art projects in Montevideo.”

• • • MAP is a volunteer-driven organization made up of local citizens, business owners, city staff, elected officials, and Chamber of Commerce staff, and UMVRDC staff.

“The initial goals of the MAP group are to build broad community support for public art in the City of Montevideo and to add one new public art piece per year on publicly owned sites,” said Fernholz.

The goal of the fundraising campaign is $10,000. MAP volunteers will be reaching out to individuals and groups asking for contributions to make this project and future public arts projects possible in the community. Prized rock from Jasper quarry was shipped as far as New York Surviving buildings are monuments to past craftsmen

Approximately 1.2 billion years ago a glacier stopped moving, and loose sand which once covered the floor of an ancient sea began to harden with heat and pressure and formed deposits of Sioux Quartzite in locations in and near Jasper. The colors of the quartzite varied from salmon coral to pink to deep purple, and Jasper quartzite is so hard it will cut glass. When the rock was forming, trapped ancient radioactive flecks formed “moons,” which are light gold colored circles which range in size from that of a human thumbprint to the size of a silver dollar and are found only in Jasper quartzite.

In 1886 the five Scottish Rae brothers organized and promoted quarrying in Jasper; and by 1888, the year Jasper became a town, more than 200 men worked in the quarry. The Rae brothers sold the south of the four main quarries to J. M. Poorbaugh and several wealthy Pipestone industrialists, who also purchased 1400 acres in both Rock and Pipestone Counties where Jasper would be located. Today of the four quarries in Jasper only the south quarry, the Jasper Stone Company, Inc., is still in production and quarrying the world’s hardest building stone.

As the new town came into being, residents used stone from the quarries to construct buildings. Four of them including the quarry and the wooden Christianson House and Store, the first business and home in the town, are on the Historic Registry including Bauman Hall, Gerber Hospital and Garage, John Rowe House, and Stordahl Building.

J. M. Poorbaugh and several wealthy Pipestone industrialists purchased the south quarry and 1400 acres of land on part of which Jasper stands today. In 1893 at the Chicago, World’s Fair, Jasper stone from that quarry received first premium.

The stone at the entrance to the Jasper Stone Co, Inc., indicates that it has been in operation since 1887, before the town was platted.

The front of the museum building, which Mr. Poorbaugh built, has changed from its original design to what it is today. The Jasper Journal occupied the building for many years before it became the home to the Senior Citizens, and then since 1981 is has housed the museum under Geraldine’s guidance. Geraldine worked at the Journal and was its editor part of that time.

This portrait is of the five Rae brothers: (back row, left to right) George, Andrew, William (front row) Alexander, and Robert. Alexander discovered the stone deposits at Jasper when he surveyed the area, and the five brothers organized and promoted quarrying in the town.

The Jasper Museum is located in this building on which visitors will find the name of the man who first purchased the land on which the city is now located.

Once the railroad arrived, the quarries were able to ship their product as far as New York City. Many buildings appeared in fledgling towns and remain there as testament to the strength of this stone which can withstand 25,000 pounds of pressure. When the jail and sheriff’s office was built in Luverne, builders inserted a layer of pink Jasper quartzite for decoration.

• • • Geraldine Pedersen, a local historian, guided me on a tour of the Jasper’s stone buildings. Her uncle was a foreman at the quarry, and from him she gleaned volumes of information about the first business in Jasper. A lifelong resident of the city and a former editor of the newspaper, she shared treasures of her town’s history. This vivacious lady’s love of history and pride in her town

were apparent as she explained the significance of these buildings and the quarry.

The tour began at the museum, where a special display of artifacts from the quarry catches the eye of a visitor, and continued down the street to the house which Ed Sandberg built with an attractive pattern of different shades of stone. From there we continued down the street to the corner where the Lutheran Church stands in its rocky beauty. Next we came to a building which is on the National Registry and is still known as Dr. Gerber’s Hospital. In the basement of this three-story building at 120 E. Wall Street the only woman doctor in the history of the town lived.

The first floor was her office, and she Arthur Foulds, a quarry worker, built this house and decorated it with stone chips by the treated her tuberculosis patients on the foundation and under the white siding and also made flower pots of those chips.

At the school, Geraldine explained that both the original school and the later addition were made of stone from the quarry and described how it was for the students to move into the new part which seemed really big. John Rowe, an owner of the east quarry, built his house which is on the National Registry at 200 E. Wall Street. In the 200 block of North Sherman Avenue, quarry worker Arthur Foulds built his family home, which he decorated with stone chips at the top of the stone walls and above the foundation and with stone chip flower pots.

On West Wall Street, several stone buildings still house businesses as they did in the 1890s. Of those buildings, Bauman Hall and the Stordahl Building are on the National Registry. Next we stopped by the house of Harry Staples, who owned the east quarry, contracted stone cutters’ consumption, moved to Colorado in hopes for a cure, and died in his forties. Our next to the last stop was the Presbyterian Church by which its bell sits on a quartzite rock. Before returning to the museum, we travelled to the south end of Sherman Avenue where the entrance to the quarry is marked by an engraved and highly polished Jasper quartzite marker.

Strike up the band, it’s summer!

A bit of Americana plays out every summer at Liberty Park in Marshall.

The Marshall Municipal Band, directed by Robert Mefford, presents a free 7:30 p.m. concert every Wednesday through July 13. The band, performing in the park’s distinctive halfmoon bandshell, performs crowd pleasers that range from Sousa marches to pop and folk music, to show tunes. There’s a children’s march at every concert.

The Fourth of July, which this year falls on a Monday, is an exception to the Liberty Park venue. Marshall’s Independence Park is the venue for both a 7:30 p.m. concert and prior to a fireworks display at dusk. The 45-member band will also present its normal Liberty Park concert that Wednesday, July 6.

Mefford, in his 34th season directing the band, says he loves the job. “It’s a thrill for me to stand up in front of all these fine musicians. I’ll keep doing it as long as they’ll have me.”

people registered at the picnic for which the Community Club furnished coffee and ice cream and listened to Minnesota Historical Society Superintendent Theodore Blegan of St. Paul speak.

Three people volunteered to draw up the constitution and by-laws of the new society and expressed the organization’s purpose: “the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of information about the history of Nobles County.”

Annual dues were 50 cents, while a life membership was $5. In 1934, the Society planned to get authentic stories from pioneers and to preserve items of historic value but they needed a place to keep these items which included collections of pictures. In 1938 the Society was granted permission to house historic relics in the courthouse. NCHS was incorporated July 10, 1944, and in 1946 took the first steps toward construction of a building for the Society. Finally, in 1963, the Society moved to the lower level of the War Memorial Building in downtown Worthington where the museum is today. In 1957 the Society purchased the Gilomen School District # 46 building near Brewster and moved it to the Nobles County Fairgrounds.

In 1968 the schoolhouse was moved to its present location, and since then the village has grown to 48 buildings and items of interest which reflect Nobles County life in the late 1800s and the early to mid-1900s.

Now the needs of Pioneer Village are moving from maintenance mode to restoration mode. Recent restoration projects include the Merry-Go-Round, the General Store, and the Caboose; and other projects are in the planning stage. Displays in the museum change frequently, genealogical society is there, work on the rural school project and a couple of book projects take place there, and a display of historic pictures is presently at the event center.

Prairie Reapers Power Reunion was established in the 1980s to preserve the history of old farm machinery. Since then members of the organization have hosted the annual tractor show which years earlier was paired with threshing, corn shelling, and well drilling demonstrations. Annually PRPR holds an ice cream social and a pancake feed.

One fall day a few years ago, members met in a farm field and held a plowing bee for which classic tractors of varied colors moved across the field turning the ground over in readiness for the next year’s crop. In the past, volunteers from PRPR built the building west of the west fence at Pioneer Village and helped paint buildings in the Village. The tractor pull has been a main attraction for fifteen plus years, and three years ago they added the now popular kiddie tractor pull to the list of events.

While the summer events at Pioneer Village are gearing up, plans for later celebrations are beginning. The Saturday before Halloween, NCHS hosts the Halloween Trail, which provides a safe place for children in third grade and under to trick and treat accompanied by parents, many of whom wear Halloween attire. Then the first Thursday and Friday of December, NCHS hosts the annual Old-Fashioned Christmas with entertainment in various buildings, horse-drawn hay rides, a bus tour of Worthington’s Christmas lights courtesy of Reading Bus Lines, food in the Saloon, fun for kids in the Big Barn, and a visit from Santa Claus. During the rest of the year, other activities include reunions, weddings, receptions, dances, anniversary celebrations, graduation parties, school tours, group tours, picnics, ice cream socials, church services, classes in the schoolhouse, plays, a heritage garden, and the list goes on and on. Last year Pioneer Village was a couple’s stop on their honeymoon.

The Pipestone County Museum is continuing its “Ghost Walks” series this summer.

The weekly guided tours share “stories of the paranormal and the ghosts who inhabit local homes and businesses in Pipestone,” according to a press release from the museum.

The tours are held every Saturday evening through Labor Day at 8 p.m., as well as selected dates in October.

The tours start at the Pipestone County Museum at 8 p.m. and last about one and a half hours. Guides share some history of the area as well as the ghostly tales.

Cost of the tour is $7 and is not recommended for children under the age of 12. Special group tours are available by appointment.

The Pipestone County Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum displays are not open during the ghost walk tours.

Currie Fourth has fireworks & more Yes, Currie does host a fireworks exhibition for its Fourth of July celebration. The spectacular display, courtesy of the Currie Town & Country Club, happens at dusk on Monday, July 4.

But Currie’s Fourth of July fest is more than fireworks. A host of activities are planned starting Saturday, July 2, and continuing through the Fourth.

Big splash for walleye tourney The 25th annual Lake Shetek Walleye Tournament attracted 96 boats in May. Joni Reitmeier, Worthington, (above), and her father, Al Reitmeier, Bigelow, topped the tourney with four walleye weighing 10.03 lbs. The duo took home first-place prize money of $1,500.

Thomas and Shane Steffl of Springfield and St. James landed the biggest walleye at 7.88 lbs.

YMCA plans run-bike-run The Marshall YMCA is holding it’s second annual Southwest Minnesota Windy City Duathlon on Saturday, July 23.

The duathlon starts at 7 a.m. with a 5K run, the participants then go right into a 20 mile bike ride that winds around the outskirts of Marshall and Lynd.

Competitors then set off on another 5K run.

This year for the first time, there will also be a 5k run only. There will also be a kids fun run the night before the race at the SMSU track.

Each team or individual participating in the duathlon with receive an Under Armour ¼ zip long sleeved shirt and medal, participants in the 5K only will receive a shirt. Kids in the fun run receive a medal and shirt.

Sailor Country: A Birds Eye View

Flying in a private plane over country a person has hunted and fished is a neat experience. I have been fortunate to fly over Lake Shetek in a Mooney piloted by Dick Ullery and Jim Jeans, a homemade airplane called a Breezy built

by Sid Foster, a Cessna Skywagon and a Minnesota State Trooper helicopter piloted by Virgil Karl, and a Piper Arrow owned and flown by Wally Christensen.

Not everyone has had the opportunity to fly over the land where they live, but now there is way for just about anyone to fly over our area. Just sit down at a computer, and enter Google Earth.

Stroke Lake Shetek Minnesota on the keyboard, and watch the screen zoom in on 3,370 acres of watery fun.

Every two years, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources stocks walleyes in Lake Shetek. And in recent years, the Natural Resources folks have put northern pike in Lake Shetek too.

The year 2010 net survey of Lake Shetek produced an average of 15 walleyes per net, and their average length was 13 inches. A real piece of fishing good news is that the black crappie population is on the upswing.

Speaking of crappies, as you fly above the Lake Shetek area you will notice Bloody Lake in the upper right hand corner of your computer screen. It is clearly labeled on Google, and it has historically been a very good lake for crappies in the Spring of the year. Just to the right of Bloody Lake is another “sleeper” lake called Fox Lake.

Three thousand acres of water is enough to provide anyone with lots of things to see and areas to cruise. On Valhalla Island on Lake Shetek you can take a cruise on a big party boat that hosts everything from reunions, to wedding receptions, and just plain open cruising.

Lake Shetek is the home of Lake Shetek State Park that features a great swimming beach, rental cabins, a paved boat launch, and a giant fishing dock.

Camping trailer, motorhome, or tent, no matter how you like to camp, Lake Shetek State Park offers you first class facilities.

As you fly around on Goggle, don’t forget to look to the left of the screen and move up just a bit and you will fly over Lake Sarah. Lake Sarah has a reputation for some of the best walleye fishing in southwest Minnesota.

Without mentioning its name, Lake Sarah has been featured more than once in a national fishing magazine as an example of prairie walleye fishing. The parking lot at the county park on the west end of the lake regularly features an equal number of vehicles with both Minnesota and Iowa license plates. A number of the best walleye fisherman from the state of Iowa, cut their teeth fishing walleyes on Lake Sarah, and more than one of them have written articles about their Minnesota walleye fishing experiences.

As you fly with Google, you will see wooded areas, trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, and everywhere you look there is a place to eat, refuel, buy bait, browse, and see new sights.

How good is Google?

When I summoned my granddaughter to my office and asked her to look at my computer screen and see if she could point out our dock at our lake cabin. In one glance, she put her finger right on it.

“Campers are expected to keep their area clean for the next camper,” said park worker Marv Timmons. “Most of them respect this and clean up after their horse.”

The multi-purpose trails take riders along the high vistas of the Yellow Medicine River Valley and also down into the valley along the wooded slopes and around the area where the river valleys meet and cross primitive streams.

The trails double as a scenic nature ride.

Riders can expect to see an abundance of prairie flowers and grasses. Scattered bur oaks are the oldest trees in the park.

Bird species include white pelicans, blue herons, spotted sandpipers, killdeer, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. Or you might spot a deer getting a drink from a stream.

“The trails are 14 feet wide and 14 feet high,” said Timmons. “The horses go through some thick wooded area and we make sure that nothing is hanging down that the rider could hit their head on.”

Many of the equestrians travel to the camp in groups. Reservations can be

To get to the camp: From Granite Falls, go south on State Highway 23, about one block to State Highway 67. Turn left on Hwy 67 and go eight miles to the park entrances. The first of the park’s three entrances will take you to the horse rider campground. The second entrance takes you to the main park entrance. The last entrance takes you to the campground.

Overnight horse camping at the Upper Sioux State Park eliminates the need for trail riders to pack up after one day.

‘Miss Beadle’ will sign autographs in Walnut Grove

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove hosts cast members from the Little House on the Prairie television series every other year. And for the third straight time, Charlotte Stewart, who played Miss Eva Beadle for four years on the show, will make an appearance.

“I love to come to Walnut Grove,” said Stewart during a recent telephone interview from her home in Napa Valley.

“The fans are wonderful and treat us all so well. It makes it an enjoyable experience.”

Stewart will appear Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 in Walnut Grove.

Besides greeting her throng of fans, Stewart will also be signing copies of her new book that debuted June 1: Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A Bad Girl’s Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X, and Me. On Saturday, Stewart will sign autographs at the museum from 9:30-11 a.m., speak in the City Park at 1 p.m., sign autographs at City Park from 3-4:30 p.m., and speak at 8:30 p.m. at the Wilder Pageant. On Sunday, Stewart will have an autograph and photo session at the museum from 9:30-11 a.m.

Two years ago, rain fell hard during an autograph session at the 40th anniversary Little House Cast Reunion, which featured 11 actors and actresses from the show, including Stewart.

But the cast members had “the-showmust-go-on” attitude and continued to sign autographs under canopies while many of the adoring fans tried to keep dry under umbrellas.

“I felt so sorry for the fans,” said Stewart. “They had to stand in line a long time in the rain, but they didn’t seem to mind at all. They were all polite and considerate.”

In 2012, Stewart made her first appearance in Walnut Grove, signing autographs and speaking to fans at the City Park.

She recalls the first time she went out to see the real Plum Creek north of town.

“As I followed the dirt path and walked over the bridge out there, I felt as though I had been here before,” she said.

“It’s hard to explain, but it was just like how they tried to make it look in Simi Valley where we filmed the series. Only it wasn’t nearly as hot (in Minnesota) as it was out there.”

Stewart’s book, co-written with author Andy Demsky, reflects on her rollercoaster life before, during and after her stint on Little House on the Prairie.

For the first time, Stewart speaks candidly in her book about her dark days such as her battle with drugs, alcoholism, breast cancer, suicide attempts, divorce, and the death of her spouse. She also reveals numerous relationships with noted personalities such as Ralph Waite, Chad Everett, Richard Dreyfuss, Jon Voight, Bill Murray and fellow cast member Victor French.

“I didn’t ever intend on writing a book,” stated Stewart. “But Andy kept insisting I had an interesting story to tell. So we eventually got together to talk about it and the words just sort of flowed out of my mouth. We spent three years writing the book and Andy did such a great job putting them together in an interesting way.”

Stewart is currently the only adult cast member from Little House on the Prairie to release a memoir, revealing the sometimes-turbulent behind-the-scenes relationships and responsibilities of playing the well-respected Miss Beadle.

A large portion of the book centers on her time on the Little House on the Prairie series. When reflecting back on her start on the show, she reveals how she got the part of the town’s schoolteacher.

“I went into a room to audition and Michael Landon was seated in the room.

The show’s producer, Ed Friendly, was sitting behind his desk and there were some assistants in the room, too,” she recalls. “Your eyes immediately go to

Michael because he was such a presence and he was so handsome.

“They wanted me to read a script, but before I began, I asked them if I could be behind the desk. And I started by telling them to be quiet and pay attention to the teacher. I left the audition not knowing if I would get the part, but an hour later I got a call telling me they wanted me to play Miss Beadle.”

Stewart thought she had just been cast in a television “Movie of the Week” or something similar to that.

“I didn’t know it was going to be a series on television,” she laughed. “And then when they told me they wanted to sign me to a four-year contract, I couldn’t believe it. I thought I had won the lottery.

It’s every actor’s dream to have the security of knowing you will be working for a number of years.”

Stewart admits that like most of the other Little House cast members, she knew little or nothing about Laura Ingalls Wilder or the books she wrote.

“I saw a Little House book in a store one day and I bought it,” Stewart said.

“I took it home and read where Mary goes blind, Pa shaves her head, and the dog dies. And I thought: ‘What did I get myself into?’ But the book I read was By the Shores of Silver Lake and I soon realized that it was book number five in the series and not the first one, so it all worked out well. The funny thing is that I wasn’t a good student in school and now I’m playing a teacher. I really had to test my acting ability.”

Stewart still stays busy. She recently filmed scenes for the reboot to “Twin Peaks” set for release on Showtime in 2017. And promoting her book is consuming much of her time now. And one of her passions is sewing.

“I live in my sewing room,” she noted.

“I’ve been sewing for many years. I really enjoy it.”

Stewart was married last August and will honeymoon with her new husband this August in France during a Little House reunion.

“I’m 75 and starting a new life,” she said in an upbeat voice.

And that new life leads Stewart right back to her old stomping grounds of Walnut Grove.

Author: Ingalls family found happiness in simple things William Anderson, who has written several books about Laura Ingalls Wilder, will be on hand to sign his books in Walnut Grove on July 9-10.

Anderson, 64, is an author, historian and lecturer. He is a specialist on the subject of Laura Ingalls Wilder and is currently the director of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum in Mansfield, Missouri, where Laura is buried. He lives and teaches in Michigan.

Anderson as invited to the White House in 2002 for then-First Lady Laura Bush’s American Authors Symposium.

Anderson’s recently published his seventh book pertaining to Laura Ingalls Wilder, this one titled: he Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Anderson will sign autographs on Saturday, July 9 at the museum from 9:30-11a.m., and from 3-4:30 p.m. at the City Park. On Sunday, July 10, Anderson will have an autograph and photograph session at the museum from 9:30-11 a.m.

The other Laura Ingalls Wilder books Anderson has written include: Laura Ingalls Wilder Country, Laura Ingalls Wilder Biography, Little House Guide Book, Pioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder, A Little House Sampler, and Laura’s Album.

The one thing Anderson wants readers to know is that through extensive research, he concluded that “Laura and her family found happiness an beauty in very simple things. They worked hard to survive, but they enjoyed themselves a great deal.”

A paddletail tale: Slow retrieval works

Jack LeTendre had his first success using paddletails last year when he caught a bunch of walleyes fishing a river, so he has been adding them to his tackle box whenever he visits a store that sells fishing tackle. On the Minnesota Fishing Opener weekend, without consulting his dad, Jack decided to try a jig rigged with a paddletail and a leech. The photo above is of the first of two walleyes Jack caught that day on a paddletail.

Steve Carney of Metro Fishing Guide Service says this of paddletails: “Because of the vibrating and aggressive tail, the lure drops very slowly when it is pitched.” To fish it most effectively you must let it drop slowly to the bottom and then to slowly sneak it along the bottom.

We found out that the flow of the river we fished pretty much took care of the bottom creeping part of the presentation.

As we drifted the river, the jig head ricocheted off of the gravel strewn river bottom and would settle back to the bottom. All we did was lift and drop and the walleyes would clobber the paddletail on the drop and the next time we went to lift, we got a walleye surprise.

with a fat bellied, and a long taperedtail version that is ribbed to increase the water speed to the tail and, boy does it work.

Note: The jig head you use on a paddletail should be designed specifically for the bait.

To make things easy for you to choose the jig design that works the best, Berkley has a picture of the jig and hook combination to use and the package even tells you what weight of jig that matches the lures in the package. Steve Carney advises you tie the jig directly on to the line and do not use a snap and swivel.

What about adding a piece of nightcrawler or a leech to the combination? Jack LeTendre subscribes to “the more is better” approach and will always take advantage of live bait when it is offered, and you can’t argue with the results he gets. Although when we ran out of nightcrawlers last year , Jack continued to catch walleyes on just a plain jig and paddletail.

I use a 4- inch Ripple Shad. It is a length that is attractive to big northern pike and largemouth bass, too. When a 10- pound plus northern pike goes after a 4- inch Ripple Shad, it usually takes a major operation to get the lure out of the northern’s throat!

This is prime time for using paddletail

Power Baits, and they are an excellent bait to use on a lake you are fishing for the first time. Just remember, if you are casting and retrieving the key word is slow. Creep it along on the bottom and mix in a little pop every now and then.

What would the Charles & Caroline Ingalls family think, if they could hitch up their horses and wagon for a ride into Walnut Grove this summer?

Fourteen decades after the Ingalls family established a modest homestead along Plum Creek, the 1870s settlers would doubtlessly be astonished to discover a mega celebration of their legacy.

Thousands of visitors are expected to fill the streets and byways of Walnut Grove during three Wilder Pageant weekends, Fridays and Saturdays, July 8-9, 15-16, and 22-23.

A spectacular outdoor pageant, based loosely on Laura Ingalls-Wilder’s “On the Banks of Plum Creek,” is the main attraction. Six performances are planned on the second, third, and fourth weekends of July. A cast of more that 60 people will tell the saga of the Ingalls family’s arrival on the Minnesota prairie, and how they endured hardships that ranged from grasshopper plagues to prairie fires.

An elaborate stage in a natural hillside amphitheater—with authentic costumes, elaborate sets, professional stage lighting and sound, wagons, teams of horses, farm animals—gives spectators a feeling of really “being there.” And yes, Plum Creek flows just beyond the pageant’s set.

Balaton Fun Fest: Lighted boat parade, fireworks The first weekend of July is always filled with fun, especially in Balaton, where the town’s annual Fun Fest is set to kick of July 1.

On Friday there will be pontoon rides around Lake Yankton beginning at 3:00 p.m. and running until 6:00 p.m. A Burger and Hotdog feed at the Lake Yankton picnic shelter starts at 4:30 p.m. The duck

race starts at 5:00 p.m. at Knudson-Bosley Park along with Lighter Side Clowns for entertainment and face painting. The night ends with the lighted boat parade on the lake followed by fireworks.

Saturday brings an inflatable obstacle course available at 7:30 a.m. The annual Fun Fest breakfast starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Community Center. The kiddie

parade starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Teddy Bear Band at 10:30 a.m. The Fun Fest parade begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by many more activities.

A disk golf tournament at 11:30 a.m., and a bean bag tournament at noon are among the Sunday events.
