Red Rock Falls Park: Well-kept secret

Most people who hear the word dells (small, usually wooded valleys) immediately think of the large tourist attraction in central Wisconsin. But did you know that southwestern Minnesota is home to dells that include a small waterfall?

The Red Rock Falls (Dells) has been called the most romantic spot in Cottonwood County. Located five miles north of the highway 71/30 junction and three-fourths mile east of Highway 71, the Cottonwood County park is like a miniature Wisconsin Dells. The site has one thing, however, that would be difficult to find at the famous dells: Serenity. Not many folks find their way to this unique spot in southwestern Minnesota, possibly because they have never heard about it.

This spring, when The Sailor correspondent and her husband visited the park, they heard the waterfalls before they saw them. Several inches of water from recent rains tumbled over rock formations of varying heights and formations along a branch of Mound Creek. At its peak, the main waterfall is 40 feet high, but in late May, there wasn’t enough water to fall uninterrupted

down the rocks. Instead, creek water formed a series of miniature falls as the water found its way in, through or around the picturesque rock formations.

For over 100 years the site has been a playground for the photographer as well as anyone who enjoys listening to the birds chirping while communing with nature and the solitude of the park. A number of wild flowers blooming along the walking path add a splash of color.

Visitors have been drawn to this marvel of nature in eastern Germantown Township along the border with Brown County as long as people have lived in the area. The crags and rock formations have stood in sharp contrast to the surrounding gently rolling farmland.

As early as 1902 the area was a popular picnic spot and a destination for curiosity seekers. Young people rode to the falls on Sunday afternoons in horse-drawn buggies. The measure of their valor depended on their willingness to jump from the high rocks into the “bottomless pit.” Today’s teens shouldn’t attempt jumping because the depth of the water is uncertain.

The site was formed when a glacier deposited red quartzite rock debris that had accumulated along the edge of the ice mass. Trees and shrubs conceal the rock formations and waterfalls from passersby. They must walk a short way to paths, many of which are smooth rock formations deposited from the iceberg of another age.

County buys land In 1968 Cottonwood County purchased seven acres at the site of the falls and created the park. By 1991, the park occupied thirteen acres. A shelter house is available for picnickers, one table is nestled in the greenery by the creek, and another one sits in the shade by the grassy area.

Red Rock Falls is possibly the area’s best-kept secret. The falls are just a short drive north and west of the Minnesota Historical Society’s Jeffers Petroglyphs site. Pack a picnic lunch on a sunny afternoon and explore the “dells.”

The arrival of the Ingalls family at the new home on Plum Creek, in a horse-drawn covered wagon, is the opening scene in the Wilder Pageant. The deepening twilight, which occasionally includes a full moon, adds a dreamlike realism to the reincarnation of the 19th century pioneer family.

Walnut Grove pageant re-tells Ingalls saga The magic of the Walnut Grove Wilder Pageant returns to the banks of Plum Creek in July.

Six Friday and Saturday performances are planned July 10-11, 17-18, and 24-25.

A cast of over 40 people will reenact the

saga of the Charles and Caroline Ingalls family establishing a new prairie home near Walnut Grove in the 1870s. Many scenes from the Laura Ingalls Wilder book, “On the Banks of Plum Creek,” are depicted in the outdoor pageant.

Paul and Jack LeTendre were happy fishermen, after reeling in these walleyes.

Walleye saves ‘doomed’ fisherman As we began fishing on our second lake of the day on the 2015 fishing opener, my grandson said: “I have to catch a walleye on this lake or I am doomed!”

I don’t think I have ever heard a sixyear-old use the word “doomed,” so I had to ask Jack LeTendre why he felt he was doomed if he didn’t catch a walleye.

It seems that Jack had struck up a conversation with our next door neighbor the night before the opener, and in the course of the conversation they made a bet on who would catch the biggest walleye. The agreed sum of the bet was 25 cents. When I asked Jack why he felt doomed he replied: “I don’t have any money along; it is all at home.

I’m doomed!”

We fished a lake called Long Lake for the first half day of the opener. Paul, Jack’s dad, caught one crappie. After consulting the fisherman grapevine, my son came to the conclusion that most folks had the same experience that we did, so we headed to lunch at our cabin and a reassessment of our fishing day.

We came up with a plan for the lake our cabin is on and set out to launch our boat.

Once again, we decided to pursue some crappies in the same place we had caught them in recent weeks. We caught one in our favorite hot-spot and that was to be the one and only so we headed for the next place on our list. As

we approached the place we were going to be fishing, who should we run into but our neighbor, the guy that Jack had made the bet with.

He immediately inquired about our fishing success, and Jack played like he didn’t hear him.

Before we could ask him if he had caught any fish, he began to whisper to us that he had caught three and one was more than 20 inches long! Once again, Jack flinched and muttered something under his breath about doom.

A seven-foot clear leader, a bead, a short hook baited with a lake shiner weighted by a ¼ ounce chain link sinker was the ticket. All we had was is to make sure the bait was always close to the lake bottom.

Big bass ate their share of our shiners, and so did northern pike, but Jack LeTendre did nail a walleye that saved him from bettor’s doom!

Joe Enz, our lake neighbor, refused to take Jack’s quarter, even though he won it fair and square. Joe was just glad to see Jack feeling he was no longer doomed!

Hunt is half the fun Most of us have inherited something from our relatives...maybe our hair or eye color. You may own a great piece of furniture that has been in your family forever. Sometimes we inherit money or land from our family…I happened to inherit a special ‘character trait’....no cash, furniture or anything like that!

My inherited ‘character trait’ is a special love of all things that are old, rusty, junky, or forgotten that have been owned and loved by a previous owner.

These previously owned treasures tend to draw me to garage sales, auctions, flea markets, iron piles and those poor ‘homeless’ orphans sitting on the side of the road! This trait also involves a passion for the ‘hunt’ for all of these ‘homeless treasures’…which has developed into a yearly Yard Sale for the past 15 years!

Collecting ‘homeless’ treasures, cleaning them up, fixing minor flaws and finding them new homes has grown from a Yard Sale into a small business on my farm! “Homeless Treasures” is nestled among the trees in a small, quaint, white barn on our acreage. Furniture, iron wheels, old doors and windows, pretty glassware and assorted ‘good junk’ are all looking for their forever home.

The ‘hunt’ for these treasures isn’t always a success. Not all ‘homeless’ treasures can be acquired...even with my special character trait! 40 years ago at the estate sale of my great-grandmother’s furniture, I learned that sometimes you just don’t have enough money to fulfill your dream of owning a family heirloom. My sister and I hoped to pool our funds and buy great grandma’s beautiful curved glass china cabinet.

As the auctioneer yelled and took bids, we soon knew that it wasn’t going to be ours. We were heartbroken to see the wonderful piece of family history going to an older, non-family gentleman.

After the sale, my sister and I visited with the gentleman who purchased ‘our’ china cabinet and asked him to keep us in mind if he were to ever sell it.

Amazingly, 30 years later, with the help of our wonderful great uncle, my sister was gifted the elusive family heirloom!!

Sometimes it takes a long time for a ‘homeless’ treasure to make it ‘home’!

Alexander Ramsey Park in Redwood Falls, which meanders over 217 acres along the Redwood River and Ramsey Creek, is the largest municipal park in Minnesota. The park, built on land with varying levels, is generally buzzing with activity throughout the summer.

One of the most popular attractions at the park is Ramsey Falls, which can be seen from several locations of the observation area, via bridges and pathways. On a sunny day, the meandering Ramsey Creek that transforms into a picturesque falls, creates a rainbow as it splashes into the waiting river below. On a breezy day, a gentle mist from the falls can be felt several hundred feet away.

Eventually, Ramsey Creek empties into the Redwood River just south of the zoo area.

This summer, the city has offered

visitors a chance to view a rarity in the Ramsey Zoo that lies within the park.

Aside from the normal upland game animals and waterfowl in the modest zoo, people can view a white whitetailed doe that can easily be mistaken for an albino deer.

“It looks like an albino deer except it doesn’t have pink eyes like albinos do,” said Paul Hagert, Redwood Falls Parks Supervisor. “We got most of our animals locally and the man that gave us this deer actually had two white ones. We were fortunate to get one of them.”

There is also another doe, a buck, and four fawns, all of natural color, at the zoo. The deer are sometimes hard to spot when they are resting in their natural habitat of long grass or brush or behind large trees. Patience is rewarded as the deer emerge and trek up a steep hill or the fawns frolic in the open areas.

Also in the zoo are geese, ducks and other waterfowl. Children can feed corn to several goats, either by hand or via a conveyer that sends the food to a bridge where the goat dine. Peacocks, pheasants and other fowl, prairie dogs, buffalo, fallow deer, and elk are included as well.

“We’re licensed and inspected by the USDA,” said Hagert, who has been with the Redwood Parks system for 19 years.

“The animals are well cared for. My crew prides themselves on keeping the animals maintained and the park clean.”

Lots to see The campground has 31 sites with electrical outlets, a rustic area for tenting, a sanitary disposal station, and restroom facilities with modern showers. Free firewood is offered when available.

and picnic areas within the park. There are also five sheltered areas, three complete with electricity and two others that are primitive. The park’s original and largest recreational area near the zoo features a large vintage timber and granite shelter that was built in the 1930s. There is also a ball field and large playground in this area.

Two years ago, a two-lane paved stone bridge for vehicles and pedestrians was built across the Redwood River, replacing the old swayback bridge.

If hiking is your thing, there are four miles of paved trails within the park with many scenic overlooks along the way. Several of these trails take hikers to places where morel mushrooms can be found.

territorial governor when the territory was established in 1849, as well as Minnesota’s second governor from 18601863.

Ramsey Park was a state park from 1911-1957 when the State of Minnesota sold it to the City of Redwood Falls for one dollar. Before the sale, patrons were charged 25 cents to enter the park. Since the city has owned it, there has been no admission fee.

A Friends of the Park group was organized several years ago to

preserve and protect the park. That independent organization operating under the umbrella of the Redwood Area Communities Foundation, raises money through private donations,

annual memberships, and fundraising events. Money raised by this group has led to renovations, improvements, and additions to the park.

Here’s an old twist to fishing for northern pike Jake hollered “got one!” I reeled in my Mister Twister and stood the rod up next to the gas tank in the transom of the boat and looked for the northern pike that was attached to Jake’s line and headed my way. As the boat rocked in the waves, my Mister Twister would just barely touch the water on the downside of waves. As I leaned over the side of the boat to net the pike, the boat rocked, the Twister touched the water, and a cruising pike immediately hit it and started to peel line off my reel. The rod finally attempted a somersault out of the back of the boat, and was air born when I grabbed it. I netted Jake’s northern and threw it on the floor. Then after turning my rod right side up, I netted my northern. Northern pike like Mr. Twisters.

As we waited our turn to clean fish in the fish house, I wandered down to the place where my boat was beached on a small stream known as Bostic Creek that flows into Lake of the Woods. I dressed a lead head jig with a white twister tail and pitched it out into the creek, just to have something to do. I got a swirl on the first retrieve and when I cast back into the swirl I caught a four pound northern pike and released it. On the next cast, a northern tore my Twister in half, so I put a new one on the lead head. It was a different color, but the result was the same, another four pound northern pike.

At this point I decided to see if I could catch a limit of pike from my beached boat. I did, and just in time to arrive when all the fish were cleaned.

As we drifted along expecting another walleye to take our nightcrawler traveling on a Spin-N-Glo, Tyler my fishing partner decided to see what would happen if he put on a really big white Twister Tail on a jig. The Spin-NGlo nightcrawler fishing was outstanding so I questioned if my friend Tyler had taken leave of his senses; but I didn’t say anything. As we turned to start another drift, Tyler said, “There is one, (pause) it is really a good one!” It turned out to be the biggest walleye caught that day.

You can pull them, drift them, pitch and reel them, pitch and hop them along, or just let them hang a foot off the bottom and their enticing tail action works its magic any way you choose.

who use boats to work the stone strewn reefs of Blocks Point, Loon Island, the Inlet, and places where trees hang over the lake and cast shade on the rocks where minnows hide and walleyes feed.

The Twister story all started with one c-shaped tail wiggling at the end of a cork-screw shaped length of soft plastic.

It wasn’t long, and creative fisherman put two tails on one hook for twice the twist, and the lure makers followed suit with factory made double tails. The first year we used double tail twisters on the Winnipeg River the northern pike ripped them up so bad with their razor sharp teeth that we resorted to buying the twister tails in big bulk bags If you leave a box of twister tails in your car trunk they won’t stink so bad that you will have to trade the car. Twisters don’t need cool aerated water to stay alive.

Twisters won’t crawl away at night never to be seen again. (On one trip to Canada we took fresh nightcrawlers along. We treated them with tender loving care. We had wonderful success catching walleyes with them on the first day of our trip. We didn’t close the cover to the nightcrawler box at the end of that day. All of our nightcrawlers left our camp that night!)

And best of all, just about any fish worth keeping can be caught on a twister.

And now for the final question. Do you any quarter ounce jigs and twister tails in your fishing box?

Memorial Day Beauties As I was getting back into my weekly routine, a friend walked up to me with his iPhone in his hand. He didn’t say anything. He just lifted up the phone to my eye level. There they were.

Pull an arm length, let the rapala start to wobble, and if it doesn’t hit bottom, pull out another arm length and repeat the procedure until the bottom is felt.

Ron recorded the number of arm lengths and he was set for the day.

Ron used this arm length system on the Missouri River, Cass Lake, and any other places he fished and his results were always as good as anyone who was fishing at the same time, and usually it was better.

When I asked Ron where he fished on Shetek, he told me his starting point was always the same.

He headed toward Frisvold’s point, started fishing in that general area and he pointed his boat toward a point that is known as Teepeeotah. (Tenting place in the Lakota Sioux Language.) He would make pass after pass starting at Frisvold’s and moving farther out into the lake on each pass. And when asked where he caught the most fish, his answer was always the same, and it was the same answer I received from my friend who caught walleyes on Memorial Day 2015.

I immediately asked him all the questions one fisherman asks another. Where did you get them? What were you using? How did you go about it?

Two out of three of the answers were things I could do and had done before.

Answer number three put duplicating his success out of my reach because he knows how to use planer boards and I have never been able to make them work. Now, to the question of where he and his boys caught their Memorial Day walleyes, the answer is as old as Lake Shetek, he was fishing “Right down the middle.”

The late Ron Muecke of Slayton was a very good fisherman. Each year he would pull up in front of my house with his boat behind his car and honk the horn until I came out to look into his live well. It always had a nice bunch of fat walleyes.

Ron had a selection of number five shad raps that were so well organized they could have been framed and hung on a wall. He had every color the minute it came out. He was the first guy to tell me about using the colors purple, glass, and pearl. His Shetek favorite was chartreuse, but only for a few passes with no bite, then he would switch colors.

Before we were introduced to linecounting reels that told us the exact length to put behind a boat, Ron had his own system for Lake Shetek. His boat had a tiller motor and he could control the speed like a great musician controls the sounds of an instrument. He knew the depths by arm lengths. You heard that right, Ron Muecke figured out how

Horse campers saddle up for trails

Summer is in full swing and the area horseback riders are hitting the trails.

Visit Garvin Park, 12 miles south of Marshall in Lyon County on a weekend, and is likely to see at least five horse trailers and campers in the park. Regulars visit the park once or twice a year, sometimes more.

“We came twice last year,” says horse camper Terry Rube of Luverne, “I plan on coming a lot more this year.”

Garvin Park’s 700 acres followed the Cottonwood River. The rolling terrain is mostly wooded, but also has open prairie lands around the park’s perimeter, and has 33 campsites with electricity. The horse park offers ten sites with electricity.

Garvin Park is located just north of the intersection of Hwys. 59 and 14.

“There are enough trails to make each ride different,” Rube says.

Horses are well free of debris as well.

“The trails are nicely groomed. If there is a downed tree, they are really good about taking care of it,” Diane VanSteernberg of Luverne says.

Typically, most horse campers bring one to two horses. In Garvin Park, many riders will haul in just for the day to ride the trails.

horses for camping and riding include the Hole-in-the-Mountain county park near Lake Benton, and Camden State Park southwest of Marshall.

Hole-in-the-Mountain has 800 acres and is located off of Hwy. 14. There is a camping area with 30 electrical sites for horse campers. The park has five miles of hiking and horse trails complete with historical markers.

Camden State Park, ten miles southwest of Marshall off Hwy. 23, also offers horse camp and trails. Camden’s 2,237 acres are nestled in the Redwood River Valley.

CURE mixes recreation with environmental issues

Twice a year, the Clean up the River Environment (CURE) group organizes a public clean-up in or along the Minnesota River Watershed. But the work of this environmentally concerned group hardly stops there.

“Sometimes it feels overwhelming to consider all the concerns we have,” said

CURE has been working to improve water quality in the Minnesota River Watershed (from Ortonville to the Twin Cities) for the last 23 years. The group’s office has been located in Montevideo for the past 10-plus years.

The mission of CURE is simple: To focus public awareness on the Minnesota River Watershed and to take action to restore and protect the river’s water quality, biological integrity and natural beauty for all generations. Couple lovingly restores Ingalls site

wife, Hazelle. They bought the farm in 1980, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s when they began upgrading their house and restoring the area along Plum Creek and by the dugout.

To Stan, living near the famous dugout is just a part of life. He’s read a couple of the Little House books, but Hazelle remembers, “I read the books as a student in a small country school.” The school had a limited budget, and just a couple books a year could be added to the library. She impatiently waited for the following year when she could read more of the Wilder books.

For over 20 years, Stan and Hazelle have dedicated their summers to maintaining and improving the dugout and creek area. A marker near the banks of Plum Creek expresses their attitude.

Fourteen decades ago, the Charles Ingalls family arrived in the Walnut Grove area and moved into an underground earth home, more commonly known as a dugout.

Old timers in the Walnut Grove area told stories about playing in the dugout as a kid. It probably never occurred to them that one day travelers from around the world would visit the site.

Seventy-some years after the Ingalls settled in the dugout, the Harold Gordon family moved onto a farm north of Walnut Gove. To the Gordons, their new home was just another farm; however, the Gordons’ farm life changed after a stranger stopped by one day. Stan, who was eight years old when his family moved to the farm, came home from school that afternoon, and his mother told him about a man who visited the farm earlier. The stranger told them someone famous once lived there.

The visitor was Garth Williams, a young artist/illustrator who went on to make a name for himself by illustrating the second edition of the “Little House” books as well as countless other children’s books. Among them were E.B. White’s Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web. After Williams was commissioned to illustrate the second edition of Wilder’s books, he planned a trip to the Midwest.

He had never been there before, so in the fall of 1947, he traveled to Walnut Grove and other areas the Wilder family had lived. He talked with the Gordons before photographing and sketching the

landscape, animals, flowers and other objects he might need in his illustrations.

Stan remembers when Sunday family dinners were interrupted by a knock on the door. Dinner was postponed while his parents personally escorted visitors to the dugout site. His mother enjoyed her role as a self-appointed information go-to person.

Visitor traffic again increased after Redwood County erected a commemorative Ingalls stone along the county road by the farm during its Centennial celebration in 1962. Then in

1974, Michael Landon’s television show Little House on the Prairie put Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and the dugout on the map for fans around the world.

“We have to thank the TV series many times over,” said Stan. Despite publicity the series gave their farm, Stan added, “We’re for the book folks. That’s why we’re here.”

Restoring the site After growing up on the farm, Stan earned a degree in chemical engineering and settled in the Twin Cities with his

to keep the site in tip-top condition. Stan likens maintaining the 25 – 30 acres of prairie grass to keeping up a garden.

Red clover, for example, is an “invasive species” when it moves into prairie grass. A limited use of weed killers is allowed, so removing tree seedlings and other weeds that have taken root in the prairies grass requires pulling them one at a time.

Stan and Hazelle feel a fondness for their stream of visitors each summer.

They store in a special place in their kitchen the letters and notes they receive.

These communications sometimes include a few coins or a dollar bill with a note of apology that the visitors didn’t have the full $5 entry fee. One note apologized for going around a roped off muddy area because they were from a Gulf Coast state, and their eight-year-old daughter was in tears when she thought she wouldn’t get to visit the dug out site.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder fans who visit the site, the Gordons say, are respectful of the property and always put their trash in the barrels provided.

Stan and Hazelle agree that there have never been any problems.

Hazelle works with the Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove, and in the spring of the year she gives guided tours to school children on class field trips.

“We’re fortunate to have something of historical significance on the farm,” said Stan.

Native prairie flowers and grasses frame the Ingalls dugout site. The Gordons have restored the site so that it resembles as much as possible how it appeared when the Charles and Caroline Ingalls family made their home there in the 1870s.

The group’s public clean-ups occur in the spring and fall.

“We have a stretch of Highway 212 along the river that we clean,” Furshong said. “Additionally, we work with our members from other locations. Last year, we cleaned up Memorial Park to Kinney Landing on Highway 67 near Granite Falls. This fall, we are in the planning stages for a clean-up near Minneota.”

The general public’s perception of CURE centers on Minnesota River work.

But CURE is also concerned with a larger picture.

“A lot of people don’t realize that we also play a significant regional role in climate and energy work in addition to our water work,” Furshong remarked.

“We work with lawmakers on issues around these three areas. We have many collaborators and partners across the state and region that we work with on a variety of issues that impact southwestern Minnesota.”

These issues include habitat, soil health, building a clean economy, and working with farmers on better land practices, Furshong said.

“A significant way agriculture impacts the river quality is by moving the water off the land much too quickly, Furshong said. “With the undocumented miles and miles of drain tile that has been installed in the past six or years or so is monumental to the degradation of the water quality.

Canoeing events For this year’s River History Weekend on June 13, CURE is partnering with the Department of Natural Resources, as well as other organizations, for the annual Minnesota River Public Paddle.

Paddle I is for intermediate to advanced paddlers who have experienced rapids.

The group will travel approximately eight miles from Memorial Park to Upper Sioux Agency near Granite Falls.

The cost is $10 for CURE members and $35 per person for non-members (which includes a CURE annual membership).

Participants must supply their own canoe or kayak.

Nature & history converge at Lower Sioux Agency

It’s hard to imagine that this serene area where trails are etched into steep forested hills leading to and from the shores along the Minnesota River was once inhabited by settlers, traders and Dakota people all peacefully working and living together.

It’s even harder to imagine that this land was also where these same people were involved in a bloody battle.

The Lower Sioux Agency History Center south of Morton and northeast of Redwood Falls along Redwood County Road 2 is a reminder of a tragic clash between two cultures.

The causes of the 1862 Dakota War continues to be debated and studied by historians.

In 1853, in exchange for the millions of acres of the land they had been living on, the United States Government established reservations on both sides of the Minnesota River where Dakota people could live and hunt for food.

They were also promised money, food and provisions as agreed upon in the 1851 Treaty of Mendota. The land on the north side of the river was the Upper Sioux Agency near present-day Granite Falls. The Lower Sioux Agency, near present-day Morton, served the south side.

On these agencies, the government’s program was designed to “civilize” the Dakota people by turning them into farmers.

Many of the government promises

weren’t kept and eventually the Dakota were starving and became angered at the government. A payment due to the tribes in the summer of 1862 was late, in part because of the tumult of the Civil War. White settlers in western Minnesota were caught in the middle of the conflict.

The Lower Sioux Agency is where the first organized attack occurred in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.

Today, the Lower Sioux Agency history center exhibit explores the Dakota story before, during and after the War. The site is managed by the reservation in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society.

Within this building, visitors are educated on what life was like for the Dakota people on the Lower Sioux Agency land. Exhibits include a Mdoketu (bark home), audio stories, storyboards, many photos and paintings, and actual items used by the Dakota people. A knowledgeable staff is on hand to answer questions.

Interpretive trails Outside the history center, visitors can take a self-guided tour along three interpretive trails. In all, there are over two dozen storyboards and markers to indicate where the likely locations of certain trading posts, or where certain events took place. Two of the trails are one mile in length, the another is a halfmile.

The River Trail, despite improvements, is still difficult to access because of its steep grade. The one-mile trail reveals just how rugged the land was for settlers, soldiers, traders, and the Dakota people.

It’s easy to imagine 19th century people, traveling by horse or foot, going to the river to unload steamboats delivering people and food to the agency, or crossing the river via the ferry and following the route north on the other side to reach Fort Ridgley. A blacksmith shop and a grist mill once stood near the river’s edge.

It was here that agency employees fled to on the morning of August 18, 1862, trying to reach the fort after the eruption of the war.

The Traders Trail is also one mile long, but much easier to walk. Fur traders likely walked along this trail in the 19th century.

The likely location of where trading posts once stood are clearly marked.

The traders were not agency employees, but they had a major impact on the operations at the agency. They extended credit to the Dakota for repayment in furs, pelts and their annual government payments. When Dakota received their money from the government, the traders laid claim to most of it, causing a friction that contributed to the war. The traders’ posts were the first to be under siege and attacked when the U.S.-Dakota war finally broke out.

The Agency Trail can be accessed from the history center. The first trail segment is where the original road passed connecting New Ulm and the Upper Sioux Agency. East on this trail leads to the stone warehouse that provided storage for food and goods intended for the Dakota. According to agency

records, plows, farm tools, seeds, food, nails, windows and doors, clothing, candles, dishes and many other supplies were among the goods stored here. It is the only original agency structure left standing at the site today.

Just west of the stone warehouse is a replicated Watcher’s Platform next to the garden area. Women and children would climb up on these platforms, built from large branches, and scare off blackbirds that would be trying to feed from their ripening corn. Also along this trail, visitors can imagine what everyday life was like for farmers, doctors, teachers, and others within this seemingly working town.

An annual event in the Lower Sioux Community is the Wacipi (Pow Wow), which brings thousands of Native Americans to an area east of Jackpot Junction and west of the history center.

This event, which is held from June 12-14 this year, honors the 40 Dakota who were hanged in Mankato (38 in 1862) and Fort Snelling (2 in 1865) following the Dakota Conflict.

New ideas considered for managing northern pike Excited to catch a big northern pike at the cabin near Brainerd, an angler casts a lure all week, yet, day after day, only has success in reeling in skinny, snakelike pike.

In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a large pike strikes bait not far from the rocky shore of an island.

With the fish landed, the angler debates whether to keep it for dinner.

On a lake bordered by farm fields, a teenager hooked on fishing has constant action from largemouth bass and panfish, but long-ago gave up on casting fruitlessly for pike that are few and far between.

These scenarios illustrate pike problems in different parts of Minnesota.

In hopes of improving northern pike fishing, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to expand the dialogue with anglers and darkhouse spearers about the problems. One concept the DNR will discuss entails creating three pike fishing zones that could solve unique challenges with pike in northeastern, north-central and southern Minnesota.

“There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to effective pike regulations,” said Don Pereira, DNR fisheries section chief.

“However, a zone concept, if enacted, could protect large pike in the northeast, increase pike populations in the south, and eventually solve the problem of an over-abundance of small pike in northcentral Minnesota.”

In hopes of engaging anglers and spearers about the zone concept, the DNR has developed a Web page at www. mndnr.gov/pike that includes a video outlining the concept, frequently asked questions, a comment form and a space where people can sign up to receive information via email. During the coming summer months, the pike page will expand to include presentations on the idea and include times and places of meetings where people can hear more, ask questions and offer informal comments.

Accommodating people who spear

Minnesota? There isn’t just one problem – or one solution – because pike populations differ in various regions of the state.

“Our primary objective is to manage pike as a fish for harvest. We’re asking anglers and spearers to consider a change in direction from the regulations we now have in hopes of making pike populations healthier and improving fishing in the future,” Pereira said.

The DNR would like anglers to have a chance to catch more large northern pike in northern Minnesota, while reducing the numbers of small pike. In southern Minneots, the DNR would like to increase pike numbers.

In the northeast, pike are present in relatively low numbers. They reproduce naturally. Although they grow slowly,

fish from a darkhouse is an important consideration, Pereira said. DNR has started dialog with leaders of the Minnesota Darkhouse & Angling Association to determine what regulations may work to conserve and improve their sport as well.

“With good dialogue and support from anglers, spearers and all of our stakeholders, we should be able to improve pike fishing for those who are harvest-oriented as well as those keen about pursuing trophy northern pike.

So what is the pike problem in

“In southern Minnesota, we could increase pike numbers and harvest opportunities through supplemental stocking, a minimum size limit and a twofish bag limit,” Pereira said. “Anglers in such a scenario would harvest fewer fish, but they would be larger, and the total pounds of pike harvested would remain about the same. Anglers would be catching larger fish within a year or two.”

“In the northeast, there are large fish in the population,” Pereira said. “A zone concept could aim to protect these fish while continuing to allow opportunity to harvest smaller pike. A change such as this would not increase the pike population.”

The north-central area is plagued by too many small pike, also known as the hammer-handle problem. There is moderate to high fishing pressure and high harvest of large and medium size pike. Pike grow slowly here. An over-abundance of small pike is the result. The overpopulated small pike eat large numbers of perch, which may have a negative effect on panfish populations.

Overabundant pike also eat stocked walleyes, reducing the effectiveness of walleye stocking. And small pike eat proportionately more than big pike – for example, 10 one-pound pike eat significantly more than one 10-pound pike.

Minnesota has more than 5,000 shallow lakes greater than 50 acres in size. These lakes, generally less than 15 feet deep, contain abundant aquatic plants and provide the most important wildlife habitat. Hansel-Welch, DNR shallow lakes program supervisor, and her staff manage these lakes to provide wildlife habitat, clear murky waters, increase aquatic vegetation and provide food and cover for wildlife.

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan is an international strategy for conserving migratory waterfowl throughout the continent.

Canada and the United States signed the plan in 1986; Mexico joined in 1994.

Fishermen love to talk, talk, talk, talk What people talk about when they are fishing is an interesting question, so I decided to ask people who fish what some of the topics were that they talked about on their last fishing outing. The results of my survey are varied and very interesting.

Respondent No. 1 said that the subject of growing tomatoes took center stage of the conversation on a sunny May afternoon when the walleyes had decided to be picky eaters. Better Boy, Big Boy, and Celebrity seemed to be the most popular hybrid tomatoes to plant in both Currie and Slayton. Upside down tomatoes were planted in hanging containers by one guy who said the southwest Minnesota wind really raised cane with them, but he didn’t care as long as he didn’t have to crawl around in the dirt. His yield didn’t matter to him because his neighbor tries to give him all the tomatoes he needs every year. When I mentioned blight, a farmer who fishes with us told me to rotate where I plant my tomatoes. I told him to come over to my house and tell me what part of my lawn I should tear up for tomatoes.

Respondent No. 2 said he could care less about tomatoes. He only likes tomatoes one way and that is in a bottle that says Heinz. He uses catsup like lots of folks use salt and pepper. So his topic of fishing conversation usually gravitates towards dogs that he has owned. He and his wife make their dogs an integral part of their family. So much so, that one time his wife cooked a beef roast in a covered pot and then took it out of the oven to cool so she could slice it. She put the roast out on a tall, bar like counter.

Their dog smelled the roast cooling and his taste buds caused him to drool so

bad he eventually jumped to the top of the tall counter and tipped the roast and wonderful beef drippings all over the kitchen floor. Before the lady returned home he had consumed the entire roast and also most of the beef drippings. To give you some idea of what this husband and wife combination think of their dog, the lady’s comment about the incident was: “I should have known better. I don’t know what I was thinking to put that roast out where Alex could get it!”

Another fishing trip topic that is popular is the subject of fish resource management. In our local area that includes Lake Shetek. It is pretty much agreed that catfish in Lake Shetek were put there by communists, terrorists, fishermen from other states, and a few people think the catfish might have ventured up the Des Moines river and jumped over the Currie dam and into the lake. At this time there is no definitive answer to most fish management questions, but they are something to talk about, when the fish aren’t biting.

for our evening meal, one of the guys brought out his wife’s carefully prepared marinated venison steak kabobs. His method was to cook them to perfection over his special charcoal heat. While he waited for the charcoal to be the right temperature, his wife’s cousin snitched four kabobs and brought them over and threw them into my 376 degree peanut oil. In just seconds, the kabobs were done to a medium rare, and, as fishing guys would say,: “To die for!”

My wife makes chili with her home canned tomatoes, special St. Ann’s Catholic Church funeral hotdish, and chow mein casserole for our first night meals. For those of you who have never tasted St. Ann’s Catholic Church funeral hotdish you really missed something. It was the ultimate tribute to the ingenuity and creativeness of country women. It took lots of really good ground beef, onions, and other surprises, but it is no longer served for funerals because it costs too much to prepare. Before we eat it on our fishing trips, we always pause and offer a prayer for the souls of those who have passed away and were good enough to leave us the recipe.

Our wives are also known for their special cookies, swiss steak, pulled meats, and we even have one who comes along on our trips and makes wonderful fish cakes from the left-over walleye and northern that have been cooked.

Most guys brag up their wives and the special foods they prepare, but that isn’t true of everyone. Once during one of our bragging sessions one of the guys ended the conversation very quickly when he said: “My wife makes a mean can of corn!” They are now divorced.

“North-central Minnesota has the hammer-handle pike problem to the detriment of not only pike but also stocked walleye, perch and panfish,” Pereira said. “With any new regulations, we would hope to see a gradual but moderate increase in the average size of pike.”

A zone concept, depending on what shape it takes, would be unlikely to create more trophy pike, as there are already special regulations that achieve that goal on individual lakes. The zone concept would leave existing special and experimental regulations in place.

“We want to improve northern pike fishing in the entire state, but pike populations are vastly different in different areas of the state. DNR technical experts are working to determine which regulations may work best and will be talking with anglers and stakeholders this summer and fall,” Pereira said.

Go-cart drivers speed around the Kartin’ in the Park dirt track in Springfield. The tenth of a mile track is banked to allow for faster speeds.

Imagine you are Jeff Gordon or Danica Patrick, zooming around a banked oval track on a roaring set of wheels. Coming out of a turn, you spot an opening between two cars. You punch the accelerator, and with a burst of speed, spurt into the lead. A practiced touch on the steering wheel guides your low-slung racer out of the final turn. You streak down the homestretch. A checkered flag waves as you cross the finish line. You’ve won!

Such are the sights and sounds at Kartin’ in the Park in Springfield, where even ordinary drivers can feel like pros.

“It’s a rush,” exclaims Brent Lund, a regular at the raceway.

The one-tenth mile, dirt go-cart track is on the east edge of Springfield off Hwy 14. The track is open to the public, weather permitting, every Saturday night from 6 to 9 or 9:30 p.m. Cost is $9 per driver for 20-25 laps. The track is part of the Schwanke Short Blocks machine shop complex.

“It’s something we do for fun,” says Tim Schwanke, who runs the business with his wife, Jan. “I enjoy seeing the smiles on kids’ faces.”

Go-cart track offers big-time racing thrills

The Saturday night go-cart event is not a sedate amusement park ride. There’s an element of racing in every heat.

Drivers can jockey for position against other cars. Part of the fun is trying to see how fast one can circle the oval while safely keeping on the track.

“You can go as fast as you can handle,” explains Jan Schwanke.

The track is run like a miniature speedway too. A flagman overlooking the track gives instructions to racers. A green flag means “go,” a yellow flag is “caution” and a red flag means “stop.”

A black flag signals a safety infraction, while the white flag signals the last lap.

Strict safety rules are enforced.

Contact between carts is not allowed, with blocking or bumping not tolerated.

Anyone who looks to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not permitted on the track.

People with neck or back problems or heart conditions, and pregnant women are advised not to get on the track.

Racers must wear closed-toe footwear and helmets. Long hair must be pulled back into ponytails. Drivers must meet minimum height requirements.

“Accidents can happen,” Jan Schwanke

advises drivers, in a safety briefing prior to their taking the wheel. Following the rules, she tells them, will reduce risks, while still allowing drivers to have fun.

Drivers sign a liability waiver before being allowed onto the track.

Up to six cars race at a time. An accomplished driver might be able to reach 28 to 30 MPH around the oval.

“People come here and say, ‘oh, I’ve driven one at Valley Fair so I know how to drive a go-cart,” Jan Schwanke says.

“Our carts will go a lot faster than what you are going to find at an amusement park.”

Drivers are allowed to pick their gocart among about two-dozen machines.

A 6.5 horsepower engine powers each cart. How each cart performs on the track varies.

Regular drivers learn which machines run best on which part of the track.

In addition to Saturday night open racing, the track can also be rented for special events and parties, such as birthdays, bachelor or bachelorette parties, family reunions, scouting events, or company events. The private parties can be booked Monday through Friday after 5 p.m., and Saturday before 6 p.m., through Sept. 30.

League racing may be organized later in the summer.

Go-cart racers have their choice of car. The go-carts are set up differently, so that most run best on a certain part of the track.

Balaton Walnut Grove

Idea takes off The Schwankes’ credit the late “Bud” Arfmann of Springfield with the idea for starting a public track. The retiree used to watch the Schwanke kids and friends race go-carts Sunday afternoons in a parking lot by their business. Arfmann suggested the family set up a real track.

Intrigued with the idea, the Schwankes then got permission from the city to set up a track inside a hockey rink in Springfield’s Riverside Park in 2006.

Kartin’ in the Park was born.

The go-cart track moved to its present location in 2010, when the Schwanke family bought the former Cottonwood River Cooperative Center property on the edge of Springfield. The 19-acre site—which once offered vocational programs to up to 180 high school students from several area school districts—gave Schwanke Short Blocks a 25,000 square foot machine shop, plus space for the new track.

The raceway has 24,000 watts of lighting for night races, plus a grandstand that seats up to 450 people.

“It’s a lot of fun,” says Tim Schwanke, a diesel mechanic by trade, and a sprint car racer himself for many years. He feels go-cart racing is an excellent family activity. “I’d like to see more people get involved.”

Tim and Jan’s four children have all been go-kart racers, each winning their divisions in league racing.

Jeremy, the oldest who works with the family business, helps maintain the track.

McKenzie, a junior in high school, is a flagger at the track.

Schwanke Short Blocks, which employs about eight full-time and six part-time people, has been in the performance engine business since 1980.

The firm ships engine packages around the world, and recently launched a classic car restoration division.
