veryone’s favorite holiday classic, “The Nutcracker”, is returning to the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts at the

Marshall High School.

This year, there will be three Prairie Dance Alliance performances of the holiday ballet classic: 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, and 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22.

This year’s cast is 99 strong, compared to 86 from two years ago.

“The cast is huge this year,” said Breanna Thompson, one of the show’s choreographers. “We make sure that everyone is included and never turn dancers and actors away. We added new roles to accommodate for the large cast like Icicles and Snow Maidens for the snow scene, Mini Butterflies for the flower dance, Rat Queen and Mouse King Assistants for the battle scene, Arc Angel to the Angel dance. And Clara has a little sister named Rose this year.

The last Nutcracker in 2017 we added Butterflies to the flower dance, Snow Bunnies to the snow scene, Gingersnaps, Bakers and Gumdrops to the Mother Ginger dance, Butterfly Queen to the flower dance and more. It is really fun to watch the cast grow as it only makes the show more exciting.”

There traditionally have been four December performances, but it has been scaled back to three this year because the dates are closer to Christmas.

“It will give the cast, the crew, the volunteers a little bit more time with their families at Christmastime,” said Justin Holmgren, president of Prairie Dance Alliance. “We always want to keep “The Nutcracker” around Christmas because it is a Christmas ballet, but this year, the way the weekends fell, it was very close to Christmas.”

••• Thompson recently opened the Tracy Academy of Dance, and also owns and operates the Marshall Academy of Dance. She is joined by Annie Deutz in her choreographer duties. The pair get together often for two- to three-hour meetings, and are working even harder than usual because of the large number of cast members.

“Annie is a huge part of Marshall Academy of Dance teaching and choreographing,” Thompson said.

“We work so well together and love to bounce ideas off of each other. We are a great team when it comes to tackling this big project. This year we still definitely have a lot to plan out with all of the new parts we added, but it is slightly easier for the parts that we are

in the Land of Sweets. The Prairie Dance Alliance first put on “The Nutcracker” in 1995, with subsequent performances in ’97, ’99, 2001, ’07, ’11, ’13, ’15 and ’17.

“Babes in Toyland” was staged in 2003 and ’05, with “Alice in Wonderland” presented in ’09. This year’s production will be the dance alliance’s 10th “Nutcracker.”

Tryouts were in July and six-hour practices have been held every Sunday since September, along with a tech week coming up in December. There are dress rehearsals, pictures and publicity things that they also participate in.

Holmgren has been the president of Prairie Dance Alliance for three years.

He said the baseline story of “The

keeping the same,” Thompson said.

Despite feeling a bit overwhelmed right off the bat having so many dancers and actors, Thompson has learned it is a good problem to have.

“After a few weeks everyone gets the hang of it and really embraces learning new things, paying attention to details,” she said. “It is so rewarding to watch the cast improve from week to week.

The most rewarding part is by far the performances. Everything really pulls together and the cast is giving the show 100%. That is so fun to experience. By the time it is over I want to do it again.”

A Merry Bright First Ice

&

First ice often brings with it some of the fastest fishing of the year. Whether it’s panfish, walleyes or pike, many species still have that late-fall feedbag on as the hardwater season starts and they’ll aggressively take after spoons, jigs and active offerings that catch their attention. With those first careful steps onto this winter’s early ice, take an assortment of bright and flashy lures to draw fish in, while cycling through confidence colors and brighter offerings that might get their cues from a more natural prey item.

Flash & Flicker Each lake seems to have a confidence color in that unnatural spectrum that fish can’t seem to resist. Whether it’s bright pink or glow red, like early season adventures on Lake of the Woods have established in my tackle box, or flashy orange offerings on a small prairie lake that will remain nameless, these out-of-the-ordinary hues help set the stage at this early point in the season. Additionally, they make for

great attractor patterns all winter, calling predators in from a distance on their respective waters and providing the bright visual cues needed to seal the deal with aggressive first-ice fish. With a little trial and error on a favorite water, it’s easy to determine what colors work best this time of year, and what wild hues will rule the day.

A Crazy Hatch There are also a number of patterns designed to match the hatch and add a little extra, whether the forage is minnows, perch, bluegills or other small prey items. Spoons and jigging lures in bright purples or blues add some color to a fathead minnow pattern to give something to fish that looks like what they love to eat but is a little bit different. Sometimes, in nature, that little difference is the cue predators need to target what they see as the weak link in the school or the odd fish out in the bait ball.

This color pattern has been adjusted to confidence colors such as pink, orange and purple and these new tweaks on an old favorite are helpful in further defining the tints that trigger a bite

Change It Up Much like fast-shifting fiber optic or LED Christmas lights provide a quick change in color this time of year, be ready to cycle through these bright and beautiful baits with a fast snap or small clip at the end of the line. This will not only help limit line twist and keep offerings like spoons, jigging lures and other flashy baits moving somewhat naturally, but also allow a quick swap from one bright color to another — or if you want to be a Scrooge about it — a shift to a more natural pattern. This allows for a quick exploration of what works and what doesn’t while covering water and inspecting a number of holes along a likely break or other area of interest on a lake.

By combining stand-out patterns that are designed to draw fish in and trigger a reaction strike, along with those that take a cue from natural prey and turn their coloration up a notch, it’s easy to decide on what fish like best; especially now, when they’re biting more readily.

Snap a clip on and go through a handful of new baits in bright colors to get the most out of first ice and add a bit more merriness to your angling efforts this time of year.

Springfield to host 34th annual Nativity Pageant Dec. 13 & 14 The Christmas story comes to life with the presentation of the Springfield Nativity Pageant Dec. 13-14 at 7 p.m. The pageant will again be held outdoors near the Springfield Community Center. Worst storms? Minnesota has weathered plenty History Is Life Bill Bolin From Above The Fold: It is our honor to once again be bringing our readers in the region the writings of the late Bill Bolin, an iconic and beloved historian, educator and coach in Tracy for many decades.

Bolin passed away October 15, 2017, and he is missed by so many to this day.

Bill started writing for the Sailor in 1997 in hopes of passing down many of his experiences, especially to his children, grandchildren and the many students he encountered in Tracy Area High School from his student teaching in 1956-57 until his final retirement in 2010.

The Tracy Area Headlight Herald, with permission from Bill’s family, is reproducing his popular columns in this edition of the Sailor, as well as in editions yet to come.

The following article ran in the November 1999 issue of the Sailor.

When weather observers attempt to agree on the most severe winters or the most intense storms in the upper midwest the consensus is generally one of disagreement.

Nearly all do conclude however, that the entire winter of 1880-81 was the most severe with one storm following another from October 15th until late April.

In 1871 Rees Price, a Welsh immigrant, homesteaded in Monroe Township of Lyon County near Garvin. His home was built with logs from the Cottonwood River Valley and he and his wife, along with their 5 children spent the entire winter of 1880-81 in that home. Peg Meier, sta writer for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, in a Sunday, February 8th, 1981 edition quoted Rees from an 1881 letter sent to his mother and sister in Waseca. His great granddaughter, Rosalie Weber of Ruthton, MN, had saved the letter. “I never seen it but a man could go out after a storm until this winter. It was impossible.â€?

Ruth Hein, in the Worthington Daily Globe wrote that 1880-81 was often referred to by early settlers as the “winter of the deep snow.â€? In my research of the cabins occupied by Murray Counties 1st pioneers at the time of the Dakota Conict of August, 1862, I ďŹ nd that both Neil Currie and Harper Workman wrote that most of the cabins were destroyed for ďŹ re wood by Tracy residents in the long, hard winter of 1880-81. Other information compiled by Ruth indicates the longevity of that winter. “Snow fell on April 5, 8 & 11 followed by high winds on April 12th. Temperatures plunged to 0 degrees on April 16th. The Worthington schools closed on March 4th and didn’t reopen until April 26th – a 1 ½ month hiatus.â€?

Stories from that 1880-81 winter and others from the late 80’s, particularly 1888 could easily ďŹ ll the columns of this article. Dan Johnson’s notations in the Marshall Independent relate that his Uncle Henry recalled snow so deep that it was still melting in the Lake Benton Valley that 4th of July. He also wrote that old timers fast learned to string a

rope from the house to the barn so as not to become lost returning from chores.

These and other accounts of the 1880’s make fascinating reading.

Those living in the Sailor reading areas that are 30 plus in years probably well remember the deadly blizzard of 1975.

Many older folks like myself still look beyond that storm to November 11th, 1940 “The Armistice Day Blizzard� in recounting our memories. That storm took the lives of many Minnesotans, mostly duck hunters in the Mississippi

River bottoms between Red Wing and Winona. In 1940 weather forecasting was still in its infancy and the storm literally “out ran� every warning. The book “All Hell Broke Loose� chronicles many stories, both tragic and heart warming from that monster storm. In the November 2000 Sailor I hope to recount its ferocity, magnitude and destruction while also dealing with the human trials it precipitated.

As we approach the end of the 20th century and the beginning of a new millennium, barring any huge storms in the ďŹ nal 2 months of 1999, my intention is to focus on the “Blizzard of the Centuryâ€?.

The ferocious storm that hit with ever mounting intensity on January 10th, 1975 and didn’t begin to subside here in southwest Minnesota until late afternoon on Sunday, January 12th. That was the same Sunday that the Vikings played the Steelers in New Orleans, losing 16-6 to Terry Bradshaw, “Mean Joe� Greene, Franco Harris, etc. Many Minnesotans still link the two events and yet refer to it as the “Super Bowl Storm.�

The National Weather Bureau stated that the 1975 storm was more severe

than the 1940 “Armistice Day� blizzard for a variety of reasons. Foremost was that on Nov. 11, 1940, it was unexpected and struck with almost no warning. The Minnesota forecast for Nov. 11, 1940 was actually –“cloudy, occasional snow and colder.� Our 1975 storm was preceded by two days of warnings. Also, it was January! Thus, one of the worst blizzards in state history, with SW Minnesota being the hardest hit, (someone referred to the Worthington area as being hit by an “Arctic hurricane�), had some of its impact blunted by its predictability.

Still, few if anyone really believed that some areas would experience 20� of snow, 60-80 mph winds, - 20 degrees temperatures and wind chills up to - 70 degrees. Its size was remarkable and a National Weather Service spokesman said; “This storm was as large as any hurricane�. Even with our modern technology travel in much of SW Minnesota was still hazardous or impossible on January 13th.

over half as a direct result of the storm and others more indirectly, the victims of heart attacks. Others suffered loss of limbs and other storm inflicted heartbreak. Reports of livestock either suffocated or frozen began to mount as farmers could get out to access the damage. A pool of agricultural officials estimated the losses to livestock alone in the tri-state area of Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota at approximately 4 million dollars. One official in Iowa said that losses in the state would be “astronomical”. An editorial in the Marshall Independent added, “maybe even catastrophic”. Jim Brandenberg, Luverne resident and now one of the world’s great photographers was working for the Worthington Daily Globe in 1975. Some of his photos tell a graphic story of the decimation of much of our remaining pheasant population in the storm. Hiram Southwick, Regional Wildlife Supervisor out of Slayton said that in various areas 50-75% of the birds were killed. This on top of the St. Patrick’s Day Storm in 1965 and a back to back series of storms in 1968-69 plus the loss of much critical habitat during the intensive tillage of that period almost brought an end to the Ringneck in SW Minnesota.

In researching this article some of my most enjoyable time was spent reading approximately 100 papers that my freshmen history students at Tracy High School wrote as an assignment upon returning to school on January 15-17. It’s hard to realize that those young authors are now nearing their 40th birthdays. Most have gone on to successful lives and re-reading the papers I realized how many of their children I had in class before retirement.

I am so happy that I filed this 1975 assignment rather than discarding them.

All were interesting and informative and are their contributions to SW Minnesota history.

The only paper I feel comfortable in quoting without permission is that of Patti Hook-Virnig now a doctor practicing medicine with her husband Arden in Onamia, MN. Our daughter Shannon married Patti’s brother Tom so her ‘75 blizzard story is fun to read. She gave details of the “Hook-winch” used to rescue a 1300 lb. steer out of a stock tank that had been completely drifted over. There was a fascinating story of finding 91 of 92 head of livestock and the joy of locating the missing white charolais bull that had simply vanished into the world of white. Her closing line: “This is one story I’m filing away in my mind to tell my grandchildren – “The

Some of the blizzard stories end in tragic loss of life, economic disasters, hours of anxiety and incomprehensible worry. Some, as I said before with loss of limbs such as that of a former student who with his wife were stranded for more than 36 hours and frozen from the waist down. There are of course hundreds of stories that go untold, some from the area south of Balaton that went without electricity for about 63 hours.

There are stories that warm our hearts, such as National Guard helicopters rescuing 11 persons in Nobles County, two of whom were pregnant. Some stories teach. Lon Kvanli, 18, a wrestler from rural Montevideo endured 14 hours in the heart of the blizzard after his snowmobile stalled. Lon burrowed into a snowbank. His first two tunnels collapsed, but the 3rd was successful. He climbed in, spent the night and wasn’t even frost bitten. However, talking to a Montevideo couple at a football playoff game this fall I learned that Lon has lived in Texas for many years. Maybe he made a vow that night to escape Minnesota winters if he made it through his ordeal.

The book not only gives us a glimpse of reality into electric company employees, but also reminds us of the neighborliness, courage, work ethic and huge hearts of the people of Minnesota. Reading this you cannot escape the fact that our farmers are the backbone of our nation – in more ways than one! We see how small towns, city, county and state employees, volunteers with snowmobiles, construction workers, medical personnel and others pitch in when the going gets tough. A pair of women operating a cafe outside of Clara City at the junctions of Hwy’s 7 & 71 started early in the storm with 12 stranded travelers to care for, by Sunday the blizzard guests had increased to 75.

In January of 1975 many performed acts that go far beyond what any of us can imagine. Take Chuck Simmons, operator of a huge payloader for

Friessen Construction in Sioux Falls – he carried NSP crews into Iona after they had been without power for 55 hours.

There was Ed Manderschied, living between Lake Wilson and Pipestone, risking his life to help save those of two power company crewmen. Echo remembers Lyman Trutna of Wood Lake who traveled 7 miles down the railroad tracks with volunteer Tim Hinz on a pair of snowmobiles. Lyman fabricated a “Western Union Splice” to restore power to those in Echo.

Finally there were some of my friends: Lloyd “Bud” Whaley and Joe West who with volunteers from the Tracy snowmobile club set out to the west.

They went into the teeth of the bitter wind and cold, for nearly 15 miles to the Lake Yankton substation on the northwest corner of Lake Yankton, restoring power to neighboring communities like Garvin, Currie and Balaton. It took many cold hours but the snowmobile brigade completed the job.

In closing I’d like to paraphrase and quote Gertrude Soderline, Marshall Independent Correspondent from Lake Benton, writing on January 22, 1975.

1880-81, 1888, 1940, 1975 – it’s ironic that though facilities seemed primitive in the old days we seemed to have suffered more in 1975.

“Nature is still master and man has far to go to control her.”

Prairie Home Hospice gears up for 3rd Annual ‘Light Up the Night’ holiday light event in Marshall Once again, Prairie Home Hospice and Community Care looks forward to hosting the annual “Light Up the Night� event at Independence Park in Marshall.

The event runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening in December, from 5-9 p.m.

The event will kick o again this year with the Light Parade in downtown Marshall on Nov. 29. The parade route will end at Independence Park, where the event will begin with the season’s ďŹ rst Lighting of the Park and a Grand Winter Fireworks Display.

Prairie Home Hospice hopes the kicko festivities will help support local businesses promoting holiday shopping as part of black Friday.

This is the third year of the “Light Up the Night� event in Marshall.

Nutcrackerâ€? stays the same, although there is a new â€œďŹ‚avorâ€? added each time the classic is put on. “They (Thompson and Deutz) switched a few things up, they’ve got a few new scenes and twists,â€? he said. “It’s nice to get a new, fresh look. It’s never the same. We want the baseline story to say the same, but we certainly want to keep it fresh ‌ for the dancers and for the crowd. And the audience, of course.â€?

This year’s Claras are Lindsey Hart and Reagan Boerboom, both of Marshall. â€œâ€Ś when she’s acting as Clara, I’m in the show in other parts,â€? Boerboom said. “And when I’m Clara she’ll be doing the same thing.â€?

Boerboom, who has been dancing since she was 3 or 4 years old, said she is excited to be playing Clara. “I was surprised when I got it,� she said. “Super happy. There’s a lot of acting, but that’s good. It’ll be fun.�

Hart has been dancing since she was 5. “I really love it — pointe is superenjoyable for me,� she said. “I love dancing as Clara, because it’s acting, too, and I love acting.�

Both eighth-graders feel the pressure of playing Clara, but are embracing the opportunity. “We have each other to depend on, so it’s good,� Hart said.

There are four “senior dancers� this year, including Jordan Kunkel, a senior at Tracy Area High School, and Abbey Goldtrap, a junior at Marshall High School.

Goldtrap said she enjoys all her time in the studio, as dance is one of her favorite things to do. “It’s my passion, so being able to do it since I was little has been a blessing,�

Goldtrap said. “I like that I get to be with my friends and do ballet, because it’s my favorite type of dance.�

Kunkel, who will be performing in her third and ďŹ nal Nutcracker, is excited to be a Buttery Queen this year. “I love that we get to do ballet and pointe, because this is the most we really do it in the studio,â€? she said. “We do a lot of contemporary, but not a lot of going back to the basics with ballet. So I think working on “The Nutcrackerâ€? helps with our technique.â€?

Both Goldtrap and Kunkel revel in the fact that not only can they dance in “The Nutcracker�, but they can act, too. “I like that there’s a storyline and you get to act while dancing,� said Goldtrap.

“Sometimes it’s hard to just dance out there, so with there being a storyline, it’s easier for the audience to understand what’s happening.â€? “It’s easier to act, too, because you know what to do with your face,â€? Kunkel added. “When you’re just dancing, you don’t know what to do with your face, but in “The Nutcrackerâ€?, you’re acting, so that makes it easier. ••• This will be the second “Nutcrackerâ€? production Holmgren will oversee. “There’s always a lot of chaos behind the scenes, but we have an awesome team — cast managers, costume directors, backstage managers — that do a great job,â€? he said.

Holmgren said between parents and people from Marshall Area Stage Company, there are between 70 and 80 volunteers helping out with this year’s performance. “We have a ton of volunteers,� he said. “It’s impossible to do without them.

There’s a ton that goes on behind the scenes. We do it every two years for a reason — the amount of work that goes into it. It certainly would never happen without the help of the (PDA) board, the volunteers and the parents.�

Holmgren said planning for a production begins about two months after the previous one has its run. He added that the turnout for the July auditions this year was “awesome.� Tryouts are open to anyone, but traditionally, the cast ends up being mostly from southwest Minnesota.

Historic Chippewa City is impressive and well taken care of to preserve its historical value. There are 24 buildings at the fabled Chippewa City that is located at the intersection of Highways 7 & 59.

"It takes a lot of volunteers and many hours to put this event on each year," said Celeste Suter, now in her second year as Executive Director of the Chippewa County Historical Society.

"But it's a fun time for everyone. We probably get around 300 to 400 people here for the Christmas event."

‘CHRISTMAS IN THE VILLAGE’ SCHEDULE 10 a.m. - The Candy Shop and Bake Sale will be open to satisfy your sweet tooth. Area artisans will be located in heated buildings and will offer unique gift items including hand-crafted jewelry, ornaments, holiday and home décor, pepper mills, turned wood items, wooden toys, embroidered towels, local honey and beeswax, baby blankets, wood signs & blocks, gnomes, prairie photography and more! The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature holiday lighting and decorations in conjunction with this year's theme.

Traditional holiday show continues at Opera House The Lake Benton Opera House will host its 23rd annual Christmas Show on December 7, with shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The show will consist of over 40 people who have appeared in the past Opera House musicals performing their favorite holiday songs. There will also be three songs sung by the entire cast. The Christmas Show is directed by Mark Wilmes of Tyler.

“The Christmas Show was created back in the 1990s as a one-year fundraiser to help pay for the utilities over the winter,” Wilmes said. “It was a big hit and ended up sticking around for another 22 years…so far.

The Lake Benton Opera House is a 133-year-old building built in 1886. The building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Other than the updated seating, the building looks much the same as it did when it was built. It is one of only a handful of Opera Houses that remain in Minnesota.

When discovering the Lake Benton Opera House, guest are treated to an enormous amount of talent that is available in rural southwestern Minnesota. After the Christmas show, the opera house shuts down for the winter. They will kick off the 2020 season in March with “Broadway Meets Lake Benton.” Again, several past performers come back to sing their

favorite Broadway musical numbers.

The 2020 season will also include a comedy, “Out of Sight…Out of Murder” in April and two musicals - “Grease” opening in July and “Elf: The Musical” in November.

Lyon County Historical Holiday Home Tour is Dec. 8 The Lyon County Historical Society’s annual Holiday Home Tour is Sunday, Dec. 8, in Marshall. turkey hot dish with green beans, a roll and a beverage. The meal will be served beginning at 11 a.m. and be served until it is gone. There will also be corn dogs available for the kids.

"We will again be selling krumkake, lefse, pizzelles and rosettes at the meal," said Suter.

Santa Claus will again be on hand to greet the many visitors that attend the event. And children can also have their picture taken with Santa.

Carol Siverhus, who played the part of "Grandma" Claus for many years at this event, passed away last November and another volunteer has stepped in to fill the role of greeter.

"She was such a charming lady," said Jensen. "Her spirit will always be here."

"Christmas in the Village" holds an endless stream of activities and sites for all ages.

One of the more popular events is the old-fashioned radio show that is held inside the village church at 11 a.m. and again and 1 p.m. Listening to the program brings you back

to yesteryear when there was no television, internet or mobile devices.

"We want to make it enjoyable for everyone and we have a lot of things going on," said Suter. "We will again have things like our radio show, gift shop, bake and candy sale, crafters, lunch, horse-drawn rides and a lot more."

Many of the pioneer buildings such as the school, church, and general store will be open during the â&#x20AC;?Christmas in the Village" event.

Soon after the conclusion of the "Christmas in the Village" event, an 11-member board of directors begin planning for the next year.

Marketing and work begins as early as September.

There is a $3 admission fee for adults, $1 for children 12-17, and free for those 11-and-under. Admission is free to Chippewa County Historical Society members.
