‘Shrek: The Musical’ comes to Lake Benton

A massive, green ogre has been spotted in Lake Benton.

But don’t worry, he won’t hurt you.

The Lake Benton Opera House production of “Shrek: The Musical” kicks off its 10-day run on Thursday.

Dates for shows are July 25, 26, 27, 31 and Aug. 1-3 (all at 7:30 p.m.); and July 28 and Aug. 3-4 at 2 p.m.

For those not familiar, “Shrek” is the story of a large, green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to a swamp to exist in happy isolation, according to the Lake Benton Opera House newsletter. He is eventually joined by the Sugar Plum Fairy, Pinocchio and Gingy, the Gingerbread Man — characters evicted by Lord Farquaad.

Farquaad tells Shrek he will get their homes back if he rescues Princess Fiona; he obliges but falls for the pretty princess.

“The main thing to get out of show is no matter who you are, what oddball qualities you have, no matter how you look, everybody is created equal,” said Wilmes. “What makes you weird to one person, makes you special, because you’re not the same as everybody else.”

Wilmes said a lot can be learned from the characters and how they deal with their perceived differences.

“They are all persecuted somehow, but they all come together and say, ‘Hey, instead of moaning about how bad we’ve got it, let’s emphasize what makes us different because that’s what makes us special,” he said.

Wilmes, who directed his first play at the Opera House in 1997 and has been there for 28 consecutive summers, said the typical cast for a performance there is between 40-50. For ‘Shrek,’ it’s 61 and includes a large number of young people.

“It’s a decent size because of a couple of big dance scenes,” he said. “There are 13 fairytale characters and another different group of dancers. And there are 37 speaking parts in the show —

that’s a pretty good size. It’s all our stage can handle.”

Alan Riedel of Brookings, SD, plays the hulking ogre, Shrek. And, yes, he will be dressed up like Shrek, with big, green hands and a head with antennae sticking out from the top.

“It’s a challenge — you’re trying to do a cartoon on stage,” Wilmes said. “Then there’s Mama Bear, Baby Bear, Pinocchio — you’ve got to get costumes for all of them.”

Wilmes said the Opera House was able to borrow some costumes from the Prairie Repertory Theatre and Brookings Community Theater.

Some of the other performers are Sara Vogt of Florence (Sugar Plum Fairy), Jacob Haen of Minneota (Pinocchio), Taylor Holck of Ruthton (Lord Farquaad) and Gena Maria Koeberl of Tyler (Princess Fiona). Emma Lipinski of Ivanhoe does the voice for Gingy, the Gingerbread Man, and a Tracy boy, Cameron Hennis, plays Baby Bear.

Hennis said two of his favorite parts of acting in Shrek are the dressing up and learning all the dancing.

“The best part of Shrek so far is being a fairy tale creature and making friends,” he said.

Hennis also appreciates some of the themes of the story.

“Every ogre turning 7 has to go away, live on their own and figure things out for themselves,” he said.

Use bottom bouncers to connect with summer

Summer ďŹ shing success often depends on ďŹ nding those locations where walleyes are feeding, cruising and schooling.

Detecting those prime pieces of underwater real estate comes down to a matter of feel, and keeping contact with the bottom is a great way to detect those transition areas from sand or mud to gravel or larger rocks, which provide cover and edge habitat for Olâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Marbleyes, adding to what can be seen on a depth ďŹ nder. Utilizing a bottom bouncer and any number of related lures pulled behind it will help provide vital clues and a way of connecting with ďŹ sh once key transition areas are identiďŹ ed.

The leg of a bottom bouncer does more than just prop a spinner or slow death rig up and prevent it from snagging in structure, it can also be used to feel out the bottom as it is pulled along behind the boat. A steady pull signiďŹ es a consistent bottom, like mud, clay, sand or sometimes ďŹ&#x201A;at rock.

A tick-tick-tick usually suggests gravel or other small-rock substrates. A larger jump or pull on the rod tip will signal the wire bouncing oďŹ&#x20AC; a bigger rock or boulder.

Putting the pattern together, anytime a bottom bouncer slips from a smooth surface to a more broken one, a key transition area is identiďŹ ed and is worth noting on a lake map or a GPS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially if a bite follows.

Use low-stretch superline like PowerPro, Fireline or the like on a sensitive graphite rod to get a more sensitive connection to the specialized sinker. special to the sailor

Hold the rod in hand to get a feel as to what things are like below as the information telegraphs up the line and compare whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s detected by touch with what can be seen on a sonar screen.

With multiple anglers in the boat, or on border waters where more than one line is allowed, have another bottom bouncer rig on a reel loaded with monoďŹ lament and set it in a nearby rod holder.

While the more sensitive (and less stretchy) superline can be used to detect changes and bites can be handled with a drop-sweep hookset by hand, the rod rigged with monoďŹ lament can play a little bit and load up against the weight of a ďŹ sh if it bites. Just remember to frequently check the rig in the rod holder while trolling along.

Not unlike pheasants, deer or other

wildlife, walleyes utilize edges for feeding, travel and, if needed, a quick escape to cover, such as a deeper stretch nearby or a rockier area that provides more concealment.

As prey items such as perch or other small panďŹ sh often utilize the same edges, these areas are worth noting and ďŹ shing with more rigor once they are detected. Finding spots in both deep and shallow water and adjusting presentations based on weather conditions or daylight is an eďŹ&#x20AC;ective way of being able to move between prime areas during low light and daytime hours.

By running spinners or other similar trolling rigs on a bottom bouncer, the rig provides a two-in-one seek-and-connect combination for walleyes in any stretch where a transition area occurs. The

options for lures behind a bottom bouncer allow for quick adjustments to conditions, forage and other cues to help connect with hungry summer walleyes.

Generally, bigger blades on spinners are for more active ďŹ sh, with largercupped Colorado blades being easier to turn and generating more thump than slimmer models, such as willow blades.

Additionally, a variety of alternative shaped blades are available including smile and hatchet blades, along with spinning ďŹ&#x201A;oats and other options to increase attraction and provide a selection that some ďŹ sh may have never seen on a water.

Experiment with those blades and various colors to ďŹ nd what works best.

Have a few diďŹ&#x20AC;erent choices ready to go to present live bait like crawlers, leeches and minnows for feeding ďŹ sh, and use smaller more subtle presentations when walleyes are funky after a cold front, and larger more boisterous blades when ďŹ sh are aggressive.

Beyond the obvious purpose of presenting a bait in the strike zone to summer walleyes, bottom bouncers, when partnered with sensitive nostretch line and a good rod, can explain a lot about why ďŹ sh are relating to a certain area in a body of water. Utilize them to get a feel for those prime places that walleyes use this time of year to recover from the spawn and feed straight into fall.

Wherever the changes are detected in the substrate below, it is likely that ďŹ sh will follow. Be ready for the bite and make it a point to mark those places for great ďŹ shing all season long.

Looking back on the life of Little Crow A large, dark marker with the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thomas Wakemanâ&#x20AC;? in raised gold lettering stands tall on a silver pole high atop the other monuments and headstones in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.

His name is unfamiliar to most, as is his given Dakota name Wowinape (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Place of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Refugeâ&#x20AC;?).

Wowinape was with his father, Taoyateduta (known to whites as Chief Little Crow), when the latter was killed in 1863 by a settler northwest of Hutchinson. Wowinape later ďŹ&#x201A;ed, was captured and sentenced to be hanged.

But what Wowinape did while in prison is what led to his life being spared and eventually being buried in Redwood Falls.

Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role in the conflict On Aug. 4, 1862, a band of approximately 500 angry Dakota broke into food warehouses at the Lower Sioux Agency east of Redwood Falls. The agent in charge, Thomas Galbraith, ordered troops not to shoot and instead called for a council.

At this council, Little Crow informed the council that the Dakota were owed money to buy food per their agreement to give up the land they were on and move to an area along the Minnesota River in exchange for annuities.

A representative of the traders, Andrew Myrick, is said to have replied: â&#x20AC;&#x153;So far as I am concerned, if they are hungry let them eat grass.â&#x20AC;?

The Dakotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s need for food and failures by the United States Federal Government and with traders is what resulted in the Dakota War of 1862.

On Aug. 17, a band of Dakota came upon a group of white civilian settlers in Acton Township in Meeker County and killed ďŹ ve of them, thus marking the beginning of the war.

Little Crow agreed to lead the Dakota bands throughout the conďŹ&#x201A;ict despite realizing that the whites would likely send larger numbers of troops into battle.

The Dakota attacked the Lower Sioux agency ďŹ rst and targeted Myrick, who was later found scalped and his mouth stuďŹ&#x20AC;ed with grass.

Under Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership, the Dakota found success in several surprise attacks, including a burial party in the Battle of Birch Coulee.

But attacks on Fort Ridgley near New Ulm were unsuccessful and the Dakota were driven oďŹ&#x20AC; by the fortâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cannons.

Little Crow was wounded in the second attack on the fort, supposedly hit by cannon ďŹ re.

Following a series of other attacks, Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s party was soundly defeated at the Battle of Wood Lake on Sept. 23, 1862, marking the end of the Dakota War. Following that rout, Little Crow and other remaining warriors ďŹ&#x201A;ed to Canada, taking three white boys as captives. One of those three boys was nine-year-old George Washington Ingalls, a cousin to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The boys were later ransomed in June of 1863 in exchange for food, blankets and horses.

The death of Little Crow On July 3, 1863, Little Crow knew his tribe was in need of horses in order to travel. He led a raiding party to steal horses from his former land.

Returning to Minnesota, Little Crow and his son Wowinape were foraging

for food when they came across some berries northwest of Hutchinson.

At the same time, a settler by the name of Nathan Lamson and his son Chauncey were out hunting and checking on their livestock when they spotted Little Crow and his son. Although there was a bounty put on Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head, the Lamsons had no idea who he was at the time.

Afraid of being killed, both parties were soon exchanging gunďŹ re.

Nathan Lamson, who was wounded in the shoulder during the exchange, struck Little Crow in the stomach, which proved to be the fatal shot.

Gasping for air, Little Crow died shortly after with his son by his side.

Wowinape then ďŹ&#x201A;ed and headed for Dakota territory at Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lake in North Dakota.

The Lamsons then rode separately into Hutchinson to tell others that they had shot and mortally wounded a Dakota man.

Accounts of the death of Little Crow tell that the next day a search party found the body of an unidentiďŹ ed Dakota man wearing a coat belonging to white settler James McGannon, who had been killed two days earlier.

The search party members brought Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifeless body to Hutchinson.

After mistreating the body and dragging it down the street for others to see during an Independence Day celebration,

Wowinape captured Wowinape was found and captured by U.S. Army troops near Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lake on July 28, 1863. It was then that Wowinape told the army soldiers about the death of his father.

OďŹ&#x192;cials then sent out a party to track down and exhume the body of Little Crow on Aug. 16, 1863. Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body was identiďŹ ed by his son by the scars on his wrists.

Nathan Lamson was awarded a bounty of $500 for killing Little Crow, while his son Chauncey received a $75 bounty.

Wowinape was tried for his alleged participation in the Dakota War, was found guilty, and sentenced to be executed.

Wakeman pardoned While in a prison camp in Davenport, IA, Wowinape converted to Christianity and took the name Thomas Wakeman.

After converting, Wakeman was pardoned in 1865 and then settled in Dakota territory at the Santee Reservation near Flandreau, SD.

In January of 1874, Wakeman married Judith Minnetonka and they had four sons and two daughters: Solomon, Ruth, John, Jesse, Ida, and Alex. They lived at the bend of the Big Sioux River near Flandreau.

Wakeman, who went on to become a farmer and a U.S. mail carrier, organized the Koskadan Okiodakiciye, a Young Manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association at Flandreau on April 27, 1879. It was recognized in 1885 by the national YMCA and its name was changed to Sioux Young Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christian Association.

Wakeman worked hard to bridge the gap and heal the deep wounds between the two cultures that fought in the U.S.Dakota War of 1862.

Wakeman contracted tuberculosis in 1885 and returned to Minnesota. On Jan. 13, 1886, he passed away at age 39 near Redwood Falls.

The Minnesota Historical Society placed a historical marker in the cemetery in 1992.

JUDITH WAKEMAN, wife of Thomas, is buried in the Doncaster Cemetery in Granite Falls. After Thomas died, she went to live with one of Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wives and was later buried beside her.

Judith Wakeman died in 1899 and is buried in the Doncaster Cemetery adjacent to Prairieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Edge Casino in Granite Falls. She was 45 years old.

Little Crow buried in South Dakota Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scalp, skull, and other bones went on display at the Minnesota State Historical Society in 1879, and stayed there until 1915, when they were removed at the request of Thomas Wakemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son and Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandson Jesse Wakeman.

Jesse Wakeman then attempted to have Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remains returned to the family several times before the state finally granted his request in 1971. Little Crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remains were brought back to South Dakota in a small copper box and that was how he was interred in a family plot in the First Presbyterian Church and Cemetery in Flandreau. The church and cemetery were put on the list of U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

In 1937, the city of Hutchinson commissioned local artist Les Kouba to erect a bronze statue of Little Crow that overlooks the Crow River near the Main Street bridge in the business district.

Murray County fair featuring IV Play The Murray County Fair runs from Aug. 14-17 this year at the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton.

4-Hers will be busy, starting Monday with judging of all general exhibits.

The 4-H Horse Show is at 9 a.m. on Aug. 12, the rabbit and goat shows are Wednesday. The 4-H Open Class exhibit buildings also open Wednesday.

The carnival opens at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. A number of events will take place throughout the fair, including music, food and other entertainment.

Some of the food-related events include a rib cook-off, wine tasting and a fun food challenge.

A free street dance will start at 9 p.m. on Friday, featuring IV Play. Other entertainment includes Ron and Jane Cote, Dueling Pianos and a KJOE Summer Fun Party.

Events that are going on all week besides the carnival include corn piles for the kids, an antique tractor show, demonstrations and a 4-H hay bale decoration competition.

Nicolletâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1838 Expedition mapped region From Above The Fold: It is our honor to once again be bringing our readers in the region the writings of the late Bill Bolin, an iconic and beloved historian, educator and coach in Tracy for many decades.

Bolin passed away October 15, 2017, and he is missed by so many to this day. Bill started writing for the Sailor in 1997 in hopes of passing down many of his experiences, especially to his children, grandchildren and the many students he encountered in Tracy Area High School from his student teaching in 1956-57 until his final retirement in 2010.

The Tracy Area Headlight Herald, with permission from Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, is reproducing his popular columns in this edition of the Sailor, as well as in editions yet to come:

Perhaps the most successful and likewise best-known journey into what is now Southwest Minnesota was that of Joseph N. Nicollet in 1838. This geographic and map-making venture was the ďŹ rst oďŹ&#x192;cially government sanctioned expedition into our area. It was to provide the information and topographic measurements used by most succeeding explorations into the land between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

According to the Gopher Historian, spring 1972; Joseph Nicollet was a refugee to America rather than an immigrant.

With the collapse of the stock market in France during the Revolution of 1830 Nicollet not only faced ruin himself, but the poor advice given to many friends and associates also destroyed them.

Disgraced and nearly penniless, yet innocent of criminal wrongdoing, he ďŹ&#x201A;ed to America in 1832.

Our young nation (the purchase of the Louisiana Territory having been made in

History Is Life Bill Bolin 1803) was experiencing a great interest in a scientiďŹ c and accurate survey of the American West, actually anything west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Most American leaders shared the opinion that accurate surveys and maps were essential to westward expansion, growth and settlement. Nicollet seems to be the right man in the right place at the right time. His work is destined to add signiďŹ cantly to American history and particularly to our history here in Southwest Minnesota.

One hundred and ďŹ fty-nine years ago the small party of explorers led by Nicollet and including John Charles Fremont as second in command were journeying across much of southwest Minnesota, mapping for the ďŹ rst time much of the area in which we now live today.

Fremont is destined to make a name for himself in many other ways; he is an oďŹ&#x192;cer in both the Mexican and Civil War. He is the Republican candidate for president in 1856; he is instrumental in the establishment of the Bear Flag Republic of California and becomes a California governor and senator. He is tagged with the nickname â&#x20AC;&#x153;PathďŹ nder of The Westâ&#x20AC;?, has a TV mini-series made of

his exploits and believe it or not, nearly drowns in Lake Shetek on Monday, June 25, 1838. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Messrs. Fremont and Laframboise did not return until 9:00 in the evening. I was very uneasy about them. An accident had befallen them in crossing la riviere des Moines (Des Moines River) which ďŹ&#x201A;ows into Lake Shetek. They found a muddy bottom, the water chest deep. The wagon became mired. They attempted to push the wheels, but Mr. Fremont who had just eaten had a cramp because of the water.

He lost consciousness and just missed drowning. They returned exhausted.â&#x20AC;?

P.63, Nicollet on the Plains and Prairies Other in the party were Joseph Laframboise, agent of the American Fur Company at â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grand Lisereâ&#x20AC;? trading post in the Bear Lake Timber, Charles A. Geyer, a botanist, J. Eugene Flandin, Joseph Renville, Jr. and eight voyageurs.

The voyageurs were paid $1.00 a day.

The importance of the Nicollet expedition rests, of course, mainly in his map. Published in 1842 (it was reprinted by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1965 and is available at the

Pipestone County Museum as well as the Minnesota Historical Society), Nicollet called our area â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sisseton Countyâ&#x20AC;? and many of the American Indian place names in the region still survive.

Todd Epp in a 1994 Sioux Falls Argus Leader article writes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Ojibway, Chippewa and other native nationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; geographical place names owe their preservation to Nicollet.

By acknowledging Indian names on his maps, he legitimized these names for Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s white society.â&#x20AC;?

A sampling of Nicolletâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Toward 1:00 we saw in the distance a clump of trees that indicated our approach to a group of lakes the Dakota name Mderhabetchi â&#x20AC;&#x201C; lake where the pelicans make their nests â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the voyageurs call Lacs chetek (Lake Shetek group).â&#x20AC;?

The Nicollet party rests at the Laframboise Trading Post for two days, long enough for Nicollet to call the area â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Great Oasisâ&#x20AC;?. His notes heap lavish praise on the beauty of the area and abundance of wildlife present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In

Box Car Days returns to Tracy The 92nd Annual Box Car Days celebration will kick of Aug. 30 and run through the Labor Day weekend.

Festivities begin Friday with the Tracy Area Chamber Burger Night and the beer pong tournament.

Things really kick in Saturday, with myriad events, including the new Zero K Fun Run. prehistoric times a village was located there but the original inhabitants vanished more than 600 years ago.

They were ďŹ rst studied in the early 1940s and have since come to be called â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Great Oasisâ&#x20AC;? people.â&#x20AC;?P.33, Western Iowa Prehistory, Duane Anderson. The area was drained between 1910-1915.

Janet Timmerman, in the early 1990s, while enrolled at SSU in Marshall, did a wonderful historical essay on the area entitled: Draining The Great Oasis.

On June 29th they arrive at the sacred red pipestone quarries and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s July 6th before they depart. Some of Nicolletâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most valuable writing and research is done during this week at the quarries.

His journal, and history, both note that he and his ďŹ ve principal companions mentioned earlier, at this time carve their initials into the Sioux quartzite on a slab preserved to this very day as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inscription Rockâ&#x20AC;?. (see picture) Recently, while visiting with David Rambow at the Pipestone County Museum, he called my attention to a May, 1997 Sioux Falls Argus Leader article about Harold Torness of Sisseton, SD. Torness, a seventy-eight year old banker and history buďŹ&#x20AC; is maybe the staunchest Nicollet admirer alive. He states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think of Nicollet as probably the greatest man who ever came to the United States.â&#x20AC;?

Imagine his shock, anger, disbelief and surprise when he discovered that Nicollet was buried in Washington DC without a gravestone or marker! Today a four-foot memorial marks the grave. Our thanks to Torness who was instrumental in having The

Lyon County Fair is Aug. 7-11 in Marshall As recently as this past April, Lyon County Fair organizers were still on the hunt for a carnival for the ďŹ ve-day festival. Thankfully for fairgoers, a contract for the Todd Armstrong Show was signed in June, meaning another crowded midway is expected for the 116th annual fair.

With the carnival comes rides such as Zero Gravity, Wiggle Worm, Tornado, Tea Time, VW Cars, Ring of Fire, Super Shot, Charlie Chopper and Fun Slide.

Los Moralitos Circus will also be performing Thursday-Saturday; there is no admission to those shows. The show features clowns, aerialists, high jumping, tumbling, unicycles, hula hoops and more. The shows will be 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8; 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9; and 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10.

The Ralco Enrichment Center will be open at 10 a.m. each day of the fair. Silly Miss Tilly will return to the fair this year, and will entertain crowds at 5 p.m. on Aug. 7, and 10 a.m. on other fair days.

The Barnes PRCA Rodeo will grab the spotlight at Second Chance Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Rodeo events include bareback bronc riding, bull riding, cowgirlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s barrel racing, junior barrel racing, saddle bronc racing, steer wrestling and tie down roping. There is also a boot scramble event for the kids.

A musical highlight of the fair will be a free Life Light Festival on Wednesday, Aug. 7, featuring Sanctus Real, Cade Thompson, Bread Of Stone, DJ Peacock, Jonathan Stone, BMX and Josh Brewer. The concert will be from 5-9:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, the Hoop Barn will be home to an educational agricultural magic show. Showtimes are 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Rolle Bolle will also be taking place each day of the fair. On Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10, at 5 p.m., Danzig the Hypnotist will perform, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a Lego building contest.

Also on Saturday, the demolition derby will begin at 7 p.m. at the Grandstand, with a number of diďŹ&#x20AC;erent payouts.

Sharing his pride from Pipestone Pride in his heritage runs deep for Bud Johnston.

When Bud was growing up in northern Wisconsin, his immediate family didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live on the reservation (Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa), but his grandparents and uncles did. During that time, being Native American wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t something you bragged about, but Bud Johnston didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care.

Even at a young age, he was proud of his heritage.

He stayed on the reservation a lot and learned the tribal history from his uncles and grandparents. And he took that knowledge with him as he lived in various places across the country, finally settling in Pipestone. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I worked for the airline for 37 years,â&#x20AC;? Johnston said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So I transferred all over the United States.â&#x20AC;?

He took his knowledge of the Native American culture with him wherever he went. In 1974, Johnston had transferred out to the bay area of California. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many years ago the United States government wanted to get rid of the Indians,â&#x20AC;? Johnston stated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So they would give us one-way bus tickets to the big city claiming there would be someone there to help us get a job (the movement was known as American Indian Relocation), but there was nobody there and they were one-way tickets. So a lot of our big cities like San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago had pretty big Indian communities that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know much about their culture because they were the product of the Indian School era.â&#x20AC;?

From November 20, 1969, to June 11, 1971, Native Americans took over and held Alcatraz Island as Indian Land. The Occupation of Alcatraz Island was led by the Native American group, Indians of All Tribes (IAT). The take-over lasted 14-months and ended when the Indians were forcibly removed by the federal government. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about the occupation of

Alcatraz,â&#x20AC;? Johnton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;About 1970, the government declared Alcatraz surplus. According to one of our old treaties, if a fort is declared surplus, it goes back to the tribal people. So a bunch of our people out in the Bay area had taken over Alcatraz. After the occupation of Alcatraz, our tribal people in the urban area wanted to be Indians again.â&#x20AC;?

There was already an Indian center in San Francisco, which was mostly Sioux, and another one in Oakland that was mostly Ojibwa. Johnston helped form one in Fremont, CA, and another one in San Jose, CA. At the Indian center, the kids started learning drum songs and other native American culture. The center had a Sioux man teaching tradition drums songs before he passed away.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the days of our people, a year after somebody dies we have what is called a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wiping of the Tears,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Johnston explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You send their spirit home. You are basically in mourning for a year. I suggested to our board because we were going to do a sobriety pow wow on New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve at San Jose at the University that we do this ceremony to send his spirit home.â&#x20AC;?

The event included an honor song, which means his family could come out and do a lap and then anyone that wants to honor him could come out and dance with them. The event was attended by over 1,000 people. During the event the woman that was to do the ceremony to send his spirit approached Johnston and

let him know she didn’t have a pipe.

Johnston made an announcement over the PA system looking for a pipe.

“Out of probably 1,000 people nobody had a pipe,” Johnston said. “So we sent his spirit with a cigarette. That was okay, the smoke is the vehicle for the prayer, but it looked kind of bad. I mumbled to myself if I ever got back around Pipestone, I’d make pipes available to whoever needs them.”

Life continued for Johnston. He worked for the airline transferring to Spokane, WA and then Wichita, KS. However, Johnston was not a fan of Wichita.

“I hated it,” Johnston said. “I thought it was the armpit of the world. They put a notice on the bulletin board that we were going to start flying to Sioux Falls, SD. I didn’t know where it was and I didn’t care. Just let me out of Wichita.”

The very first week he was in Sioux Falls, he saw a man carrying an interesting bag.

“This guy comes up carrying a tall skinny paper bag like you’d see guys hid a bottle in,” Johnston explained. “But he was carrying it funny and it looked like a pipestem sticking out of it. I said what you got in that bag? He said a pipe. I said where’d you get that? He said Pipestone.

I said where is Pipestone from here? He said about an hour up the road. Wow, I’m here!

It was 1984, when Johnston finally made it to Pipestone. Johnston came to Pipestone and got a quarry permit. He started quarrying and started making simple pipes. He rented a 4x4 display case at the Sioux Falls airport and made a catalog. That was the beginning of the next part of his journey in pipe carving.

In 1996, Johnston, along with other tribal leaders, formed The Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers as a Tribal non-profit organization in Pipestone. The organization was formed to protect and educate the public about

the nearby pipestone quarries.

“We formed this organization to get federal recognition because there is no tribe here.” Johnston said. “It keeps up the sacred tradition of pipe makers - that is what our spiritual people felt it should be. Because we are a federally recognized church we can go into any school or prison, especially the prison, 24 hours a day, and work with the inmates if they want to talk to a spiritual person.”

The organization has donated over 170 pipes to prisons. In addition to their work with prisons, in Minnesota many schools wanted the organization to come give talks but the cost prohibited it. When the legacy funding became available, Keepers began working with schools for an entire week at a time.

“They might have the whole district come in or they might have different classes every day,” Johnston said. “For

about eight years I took Native American dance groups all over they world. We’d do about four schools a day and in the evening we’d do a big public thing that would help pay for the trips. I’d take 15-25 people with me. The school kids, both here and there, seemed to go crazy, its seems to be different when you are actually seeing somebody talk about something then listening to a recording or something.”

The most recent school Johnston and his wife Rona worked with was in St. Cloud.

“For a whole week we had four classes a day of first graders,” Johnston said.

“After we committed to doing it the principal called us up and said we have a bunch of kids from Cambodia. The first

PRAYERS answered It didn’t happen overnight, but thanks to a thoughtful and caring friend, a growing Hmong community at Tracy Hmong Alliance Church has a new home to worship

Saturday, July 27, was a day of thanks, praise, and celebration for members of Tracy Hmong Alliance Church. On that day an open house was held in the congregation’s new home in the former St. Paul Catholic Church in Walnut Grove.

For a congregation of 219 members — mostly children and youth — where 100 to 125 people regularly attend services, the present church building on the corner of 3rd and Hollett streets in Tracy had become too small. According to Pastor Jong Xiong Herr, “We often had to find other places to hold weddings or special events. There were not facilities to prepare or serve meals. The Tracy Alliance Church in Broadacres would sometimes but not always be able to host the events. If they couldn’t we would have to find another place.”

Both the Tracy Hmong Alliance and the Tracy Alliance churches are of the same Christian denomination. They do belong to different districts, with the Hmong Alliance being in a Hmong District of all Hmong churches.

When asked how old the Tracy church

building was Pastor Herr said, “I don’t know how old it is but I’m sure that it is older than any person in Tracy.”

Some challenges that go along with being an older building are the lack of parking and the steep entry steps which can prove to be difficult for older or physically-challenged parishioners.

The congregation’s new home in Walnut Grove provides answers to all of these problems. Entry into the front of the church is wheelchair accessible and leads to a spacious sanctuary. There is new carpeting over the old tile floors in the sanctuary and ample space for the 204 new cushioned chairs they have recently been purchased with room for more chairs in the future.

A short hallway from the sanctuary leads to one wing of the building where a large dining/activity/recreation area with an attached kitchen is found. The kitchen needs a new stove, but in time they will be able to prepare and serve meals there.

currently occupied by the Youth Pastor Sherman Yang, who has been with the church for about a year.

In the basement under the parsonage wing are five large classrooms to be used for Sunday School, a laundry room, and a utility room. Since there is ample room on the church grounds the youth will have plenty of space to play soccer, volleyball, softball and other games outside. The larger lot also provides more curb-side parking than in Tracy.

Herr, his wife Peemon, and their family will continue to live in their home in Tracy.

“The church is moving but not its people,” stated Herr.

Prior to obtaining ownership of the building, an auction had been held and it had largely been emptied of its contents.

There was little in the Tracy church

that would be brought over and used.

Thanks to donations from local members and contributions from Hmong Alliance churches across the United States received through the Hmong District, enough money had been received to buy chairs, tables, and other furnishings.

As one of the elder parishioners modestly put it, the church with its two rows of eight short pews in Tracy is “a little small.” No active search for a new larger home had been held, but an assist arrived from Anna Jeanne Flesner, who

thing we were going to have them do is make a dream catcher. And we asked them if they could tie their shoes. They all said they could. They were lying.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to the dream catchers, the ďŹ rst graders made pictograms. Johnston explained the diďŹ&#x20AC;erent animals to the students and what they represented.

The students were asked to write a story around their pictograph using the animals. Afterwards, the tipis were rolled up so the students each had their own pictograph tipi. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really, really going good all week,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Johnston said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the last day of the class we had a mini pow wow.

We got a couple of the teachers to sit at the drum and we got the kids all up to dance with us. The girls from Cambodia started it. They lined up and started giving us hugs before we left. They said we reminded them of their old homes in Cambodia. About a week afterwards, the principal called us up and said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wow you guys really made an impact, the kids are still talking about you guys being up here.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

In addition to sharing the culture with students the Keepers organization and Johnston in particular have seen an increase in interest locally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today here at home, more and more people, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure why this is happening, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll come in here and say Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here but I had to come here,â&#x20AC;? Johnston said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They might say they had a grandma or a grandpa that was part Indian and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what tribe but they wanted to know more about those people. We

do a lot of that type of stuďŹ&#x20AC; with people.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of neat. The hard part, because of the Indian school era, many, many of our people knew they were Indian or Tribal, whatever word you want to use, but they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know anything about their culture.â&#x20AC;?

Today, as interest in peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heritage continues to increase, Johnston spends about thirty percent of his time traveling to schools. Johnston still makes pipes at home. He quarried for twelve years in Pipestone. But his biggest concern is the dwindling number of quarriers and pipe carvers. When the organization was formed, there were 35 pipe carvers in the area, today there are eight left. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you practice making pipes you might picture things in a piece of stone,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Johnston explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometime the stone will talk to you. It will say it wants to be an owl or a bear or something.

Pipes can be simple or ornate. Some may have a small carving, while others look like a work of art. However, the pipe is a tool in the native culture. The purpose of a pipe is to say a prayer. The smoke is the vehicle, the pipe is the tool.

This tradition is what keeps Johnston continuing to educate those willing to want to learn, whether it is a school

class or those walking through the doors of the gift shop and gallery in Pipestone. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crazy today because so many people are feeling a need for talking to creator in a diďŹ&#x20AC;erent way than theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing,â&#x20AC;? Johnston explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was called a peace pipe because our people would always have one there.

Because when you would share a pipe, for most of the indigenous people, it meant that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to tell the truth and share what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sharing. So it got to be called the peace pipe. But the pipes are used for anything thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big deal in your life. If you are going a road trip, you might use the pipe for a safe travel.

Custom-made in Canby Pat Schroeder has created an eye-catching motorcycle that fits him and his wife just perfectly

Pat Schroeder isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t looking for attention, but he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind when he gets it. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not him everyone is looking at.

Schroeder, a bike enthusiast, can be found riding the open roads of southwest Minnesota on his custommade trike. Schroeder actually gives new meaning to the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;custom.â&#x20AC;?

He was without a bike for a while, he said, but recently once again became an owner. The problem was, he needed

something comfortable enough that his wife, Beth, would join him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I asked her if I built a bike that was comfortable enough for us to ride, would she ride,â&#x20AC;? Schroeder said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yep,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; so here it is. She loves it.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plenty of room for her to relax, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother her hips, which she has issues with.

The back end of the trike is literally the back end of a 1997 Ford Coupe that Schroeder found â&#x20AC;&#x153;laying out in the trees. I walked by it one day and all of a sudden I got a brain fart â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;you know I can building something out of that.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Eventually, Schroederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision of

building a trike became clear. He became a parts scavenger, and built his creation in his head while driving truck. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everytime I got something, I tried to figure out how I was going to use it, how I wanted it to look,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Finally, I got all my parts together, for the most part, and I started building it.â&#x20AC;?

Six months later, a trike was born, complete with cushion seats from a 2000 Dodge minivan (with arm rests) and a dashboard that was a gas tank from a 2012 Harley in a previous life. The front fender, which Schroeder customized, is

It was 100 years ago this summer that brothers Fred and Julius Ernston built the first permanent “popcorn stand” in Granite Falls.

Although that original stand is long since gone, the town has always had a stand in which fresh popcorn has been sold in the downtown business district.

The popcorn stand, which sits on the corner of Prentice Street and 7th Avenue, has been on that location since the 1920s; a block north of its former location.

The current stand was built in 1969 and has undergone a few renovations.

It has been owned and operated by the Granite Falls Kiwanis since 2002.

a year for the town celebration, but local citizens enjoyed it so much that they called for the stand to be open all summer.

So the Ernstons’ built a portable popcorn stand. And they enlisted their father Andrew, a blacksmith, to construct the first kettle to pop the corn in. The brothers ran the stand during the summer months for many years.

“Granite Falls had several movie theaters in town in the early days,” Les Bergquist of the Kiwanis explained.

“Movie theaters didn’t want to bother with concession stands back then because they didn’t want to deal with the mess.

“But when the theater owners saw how much business the popcorn stand was getting, they decided to start selling concessions themselves.”

Still, the Ernstons’ first popcorn stand remained a popular place as the smell of popcorn wafting in the outside air acted like free advertising to entice the patrons.

And even today, the stand’s appearance is reminiscent of a red and white popcorn box often served at movie theaters years ago. The 36-square foot stand is not only a place to get fresh popcorn, it is also somewhat of an historical showpiece.

“This is the best popcorn I’ve ever had,” said one local customer purchasing popcorn and root beer on Saturday night. “I’ve been coming here for a long time.”

The root beer has been on tap at the stand for the last 25 years.

“The root beer is called ‘1919 Root Beer’ because it’s when prohibition began,” said Bergquist, who was serving up popcorn and root beer this night.

“When prohibition began 100 years ago, a lot of the beer distributors began making soft drinks.”

So Al Arneson, a native of Granite Falls, developed the recipe for 1919 Classic Draft Root Beer sometime in the 1960s in honor of prohibition and former legislator and Granite Falls native Andrew Volstead, who co-sponsored the prohibition legislation now referred to as the Volstead Act of 1919.

Prohibition was repealed in 1933. “(Arneson) contracted with Schell’s Brewery in New Ulm to manufacture 1919 Root Beer in eight-gallon kegs” Bergquist noted.

had taught piano to Herrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter, Selena, and son, Joshua. She had also held piano recitals at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. When the church had been vacated she indicated to Herr that it would make a good home for his congregation.

Herr did follow up on the tip, and while he was enthused about the building he found out that there was a sale pending on it. Although initially discouraged, Herrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brother, Kong Herr said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you like the church letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s go pray for it.â&#x20AC;?

The two of them went to Walnut Grove, stood outside the church and prayed.

Some time passed and it was found out that the pending sale had fallen through. Again, Herr inquired about the building and was told that it was being put up for bids. Unfortunately, there were already ďŹ ve bids in. After consulting with church elders, the Hmong Alliance did put in a bid. This time Herr, along with church elders and other members, went to the vacant church to pray. When bids were opened, they were not the high bidder.

Evidence that it is good to never give up came later when Herr received a call from the winning bidder: Sam Sahlstrom. He had put in a bid because he felt it to be a good building and he got it at a good price, but he had no

immediate use for it. He did know that Tracy Hmong Alliance Church did have a good use and oďŹ&#x20AC;ered to sell it to them for what he had paid.

Herr met with church elders and they recommended to the congregation that they move forward with the purchase.

The vote of the congregation was in agreement: They would move to Walnut Grove and put the Tracy church property up for sale.

Members of the congregation are not the only ones who are pleased. So are Melissa and Sam Sahlstrom. In their words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We certainly knew that God had a purpose for the property!â&#x20AC;?

Plans for Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebration are to meet outside the church in Walnut Grove at 11 a.m. for a ribbon cutting ceremony, after which those in attendance would go into the sanctuary for a short video. After the video there will be time for tours of the building and then a return to the sanctuary for a service. Lunch and refreshments will be served in the dining hall and people can linger and visit as they choose.

All the aluminum on the trike is scrap Schroeder picked up for pennies on the dollar. As for the 460 Ford motor, it was one he used to use for tractor pulling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anything else, so I decided that was the motor that was going in there,â&#x20AC;? said Schroeder, who lives just south of Canby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Otherwise I wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve went with a smaller motor. This one came out of a 1973 motorhome.â&#x20AC;?

Of course, Schroeder modiďŹ ed that, too. After he took it out of the motorhome, he juiced it up with a 6500 RPM cam that gives his trike more horsepower.

For the record, Schroeder doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know exactly how fast his creation will go, but he has got it up to 140 MPH, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and I still had 2,000 RPMs to go,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got the guts to go faster than that. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m getting to old for that.â&#x20AC;?

Other parts of his trike came oďŹ&#x20AC; various bikes, such

as the grips on the high-test steel handlebar that came from a 1981 Yamaha motorcycle he owned and the oversized bug deďŹ&#x201A;ector he made out of a chunk of quarter-inch Plexiglass he picked up at the lumberyard in Canby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing really fancy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just stuďŹ&#x20AC; that I threw together,â&#x20AC;? Schroeder said humbly.

Schroeder installed a T-handle shifter from an old Pinto that he uses to put the trike in drive, reverse or neutral; he uses buttons to shift to his four gears, as well as overdrive. While classiďŹ ed as a trike, Schroederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creation is licensed as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;2015 Special.â&#x20AC;?

He ďŹ gures he sunk about $3,500 into it. The most expensive part of the trike was the paint, which he had custom-mixed for $750. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really sunny out, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rainbow â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all diďŹ&#x20AC;erent colors on that black,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The root beer is still sold to the Kiwanis for its popcorn stand in kegs only. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We sell somewhere between 40 and 50 kegs a summer,â&#x20AC;? Bergquist said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best root beer theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever had.â&#x20AC;?

On the evening of April 15, 1945, Julius and Fred opened the stand as usual. Julius was not feeling well and told his brother he was going to go and sit in the car for a little while. He was then found dead in his car that day while listening to the radio broadcast of the funeral of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Fred Ernston operated the stand by himself until his death in 1950.

There have been numerous owners of the stand over the years, including Fredâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Fred Jr. David Kafka and Jill Prahm owned the stand from 1997 until donating it to the local Kiwanis organization. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what happened to the original stand,â&#x20AC;? said Bergquist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This one is the third one thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been built. I assume the other two arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t around anymore.â&#x20AC;?

That money generated from the stand sales is used to support several local youth programs, including high school scholarships.

Bergquist says he looks forward to working in the stand in the evenings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun to visit with all the people,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some we know well and others we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. They come from all over the area and they are all fun to talk to. We see many of the same faces come here over and over so we know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good popcorn and root beer.â&#x20AC;?

The stand is now open seven days a week from May 1 until Labor Day from 7-9:30 p.m. Besides popcorn and root beer, also available is bottled water, caramel corn and frozen Snickers.

Marshall Sounds of Summer Aug. 14-18 Marshall Sounds of Summer brings another weekend full of events to town August 14 - 18. The annual summer event kicks oďŹ&#x20AC; on Wednesday, Aug. 14, with the Hometown Heroes Walk at Independence Park from 5-7 p.m. All proceeds from the walk go to the Hometown Heroes (military, law enforcement, EMTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, ďŹ re department, and clergy).

Thursday, August 15 Back to the Blue Moon will be at the Red Baron Arena from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Dr. Lloyd Peterson will give a presentation on the Civil War from 9-11 a.m., followed by Mylan Ray from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
