$1.2 million renovation eyed for Redwood Theatre

At least that’s the vision Craig LaBrie and his ownership group has in restoring and re-opening the Historic Redwood Theatre in downtown Redwood Falls.

The theatre, built in 1931, has not been used as a movie theatre for over 40 years.

And while the group’s vision is to have the final result appear much as it looked in the early days, they will also enlist a modern flair.

“We want it to be as much like it used to be as we can, but we’ll be using some modern technology,” said LeBrie, who purchased the building on Mill Street with his wife, Cindy, and Shon and Tina Giernet of Redwood Falls a year ago.

Paul Warshauer of New Ulm is also involved with the group as a consultant.

This won’t be any small renovation with a new paint job and a few holes patched.

The ongoing renovation is an estimated $1.2 million project that will include the removal of several walls that were constructed after the theatre closed, opening up the ceilings again, adding two new large restrooms on the main floor, increasing the size of the screen from its original 25 feet wide to an easier-viewing 36 feet, constructing a new ticket booth, adding modern seating, purchasing a digital projector, and also adding a new concessions area on the main floor, and possibly a smaller concession area in the balcony.

Few remnants remain from the original theatre as the seats, projector and the screen were discarded over the years as new owners used the building for other activities. Among the items still remaining are the original bathroom tiles, the curtain, stage, and several painted Disney characters on the walls inside the “Crying Room”.

The original stairways on each side of the main floor that lead up to the balcony will remain, LaBrie said.

The initial target date for the completed renovation of the theatre was Memorial weekend in 2017. But LaBrie suffered a serious health issue in late April and temporarily put the project on hold.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, but I’d like to see the theatre completed and open around Thanksgiving or Christmas of 2017,” he said.

Craig LaBrie is grateful for the donations that have come in for the theatre restoration, including this movie projector, which is similar to the equipment used when the Redwood Theatre first opened in 1931.

Early ‘talkie’ The original theatre was built in 1931 and owned by H.W. Buckley and later his son, Bob. The Redwood Theatre was one of the first theatres built in southwest Minnesota designed for “talkies” with large speakers tucked behind the viewing screen. The theatre originally had seating for 800 patrons that included a main floor and a balcony section; although the seats were much smaller and cramped than today’s more comfortable theatre seating.

In 1937, Buckley added the concrete marquee that is still affixed to the front of the building.

The theatre remained in operation every night until 1969, and then had showings only on weekends over the next few years before closing for good.

After the theatre closed, the building served multi-purposes, among them a racquetball court, dance studio, and even a place for church services. Since 2005, it’s been used sparingly.

donations, fund-raisers and grants.

Some items already donated to the theatre have made an impression on visitors touring the theatre and getting a chance to see the future plans. A large projector, similar to the type that was used in the early days of the Redwood Theatre sits in the lobby, along with a pair of velvet rope dividers and two six foot gold cutouts of an Oscar, the award given out at the Academy Awards.

“They were used one year for prom decorations and they were given to us,” said LaBrie, about the Oscar cutouts.

“They add a nice touch in here.”

The group is also considering a donor appreciation area outside.

“For those that donate, we are thinking

about having their names on a star or something like the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” LaBrie said. “Something like that would honor those that contributed and also tie into the movie theatre.”

Renovation plans for the theatre calls for a seating capacity of 212 patrons, including 144 on the main floor and 68 more in the balcony. The theatre will also be handicap-accessible.

“We might do something special in the balcony like putting in the modern recliner-type seating,” LaBrie said.

“We want to make this a special place for people to watch movies. We want their night out at the theatre to be an experience” And LaBrie said the current plan is People stand outside the Redwood Theatre in 1978.

“The downtown parking is full during the day, but when the movies would be shown at night, there would plenty of parking,” he noted. “I counted 800 parking spots in all (in the business district), so it shouldn’t be a problem at all.”

The boy is from Morris, Minnesota. The dog is from the First Nation Reservation at Grand Rapids, Manitoba. The dog’s name is “Bat.” The boy’s name is Jack.

Bat was waiting to greet our fishing party when we arrived, and as we were unpacking for our 5 day stay, Bat decided to stand next to Jack. Jack’s reaction was to reach out and pat Bat’s head. With just a couple of simple moves toward each other, a friendship was formed.

Each day when we returned to camp from fishing, Bat would find Jack and sit by him. Bat knew we had food. That is why he came to camp in the first place, and we gave him some of our evening food each day All the signs along the highway that told us Manitoba is a friendly place didn’t have much of an impact on how we felt about Manitoba, but Bat did. Jack and Bat show that trust is what makes good things happen.

High point on RR never hit lofty population heights

Travelers on Highway 60 south of Worthington will see amid a series of curves on the west side of the roadway an old grain elevator standing above what appears to be a huge grove and will not realize that they are passing Org, Minnesota. This settlement, which Arthur Rose in his 1908 History of Nobles County described as the smallest town in Nobles County, today also includes a number of tree-shaded houses and buildings, three tree-lined streets, and railroad tracks which are to the west but mostly hidden from its residents by trees.

Org was taken off official Minnesota road maps in 1977, yet this village remains important geographically and has a unique history, much of which is railroad related.

Geographically Org is the highest point between the Twin Cities and Omaha along the railroad; and approximately seven miles further south of the village is Hawkeye Point, the highest point in the state of Iowa. Today the altitude of Org is not as crucial to the railroad as it was when steam locomotives pulled rail cars to their next destination. Although today’s diesel-powered locomotives

require more fuel and horsepower as they pull rail cars up to Org, modern engines’ design allows for consistent and less labor-intensive operation than was required when steam engines moved freight and passengers by rail. In the late 1800s and well into the 1900s, rail

crews knew that until the train reached and passed this high point on their run, the fireman would need to throw many more scoops of coal into strategic parts of the locomotive’s firebox so the steam engine would continue to provide even power during the climb. The ever-

vigilant engineer needed to keep an even closer watch on the water and the steam pressure levels in order to maintain steady power and speed. Once the train passed Org and began its descent, the fireman no longer needed to scoop as much coal, and the water and steam pressure levels were easier to maintain.

Along the rail line, Org was important because of the switches of Agate, Trent, and Org and its unusual rail design which allowed for trains to switch directions. The triangular layout of the tracks allowed trains to turn around by passing through Org and then backing onto the track, which led to Sioux Falls, until they passed far enough past the switch which would move the rails so the train could then proceed forward and onto the main line thus allowing them to proceed in the opposite direction.

Sioux Falls Jct. In 1876 the Worthington and Sioux Falls Railroad built the tracks to the top of the grade and referred to that location as Iselin until the trains began to run and the site became known as Sioux Falls Junction, a name it retained until 1890 when the town’s name was changed to Org, a name the origin of which is still unknown but may have come from dorg, a bad name for dog, or, according to other sources, in honor of Olive Rinehard Gossamer, who was possible a love interest of a railroad employee.

Ten years later farmer N. A. Call began shipping his hay from Sioux Falls Junction, the railroad built a depot, and Call built a large warehouse for his hay.

By the fall of 1899 the town added an elevator, lumber and coal business, a general store, and a post office. Later another store, a blacksmith and carpenter shop, an implement, and another elevator would come into existence. At one time more hay was shipped from Org than from anywhere else in the United States.

While Org was a booming town, 12 passenger trains, three of which stopped at the depot, passed through there each day. Two separate tracks ran between Org and Worthington, and a number of near crashes were averted in Org. Each day grain and livestock was shipped by rail, and some of the livestock was

shipped live to England. The town even had a maroon and white clad baseball team which won approximately 60 percent of its games, and sometimes the depot agent would let young men take the pump hand car to Worthington on Saturday night.

In 1899 Charles King of Rushmore bought the store in Org from a Mr. Staubus, announced plans to add onto the building, and became assistant postmaster. In 1900 two rail cars hauling gravel derailed, and the next morning the railroad company abandoned the Sioux Fall Junction depot. Grain piled up at the elevators and products were not shipped, soon after the depot was renamed the Org Depot and was moved, and business returned to normal. Then in February, 1905, in snowy conditions two engines and the baggage car derailed at Org while the rest of the passenger cars remained on the track. During World War I coal for steam engines and rails to be cut and drilled were piled in Org. Early female agent Agnes Peterson, a Wisconsin farm girl who had three brothers and sisters, became the depot agent in Org at a time when very few women other than depot agents’ wives took over those responsibilities which included in part sending and receiving telegraphs, shipping and receiving products

including the U. S. Mail, keeping the depot warm in the winter, hanging lanterns high up to signal trains coming and going, and attending to day-to-day railroad business and activities. She boarded with the Frank Johnson family and drove a 1928 Chevrolet. While she was the depot agent, farmers drove their livestock to the depot so they could be shipped to market; rail cars were loaded with grain, dairy products, and hay; high school students boarded the train on Monday morning for Worthington where they stayed until they returned home by train on Friday afternoon; and famous people came to Org. Famous visitors When Theodore Roosevelt’s train stopped in Org, he gave a ten-minute speech to approximately 150 people.

William Jennings Bryan and William H. Taft each gave five-minute speeches from their separate trains. Woodrow Wilson was reported also to have been there.

In 1990 Org celebrated its 100th anniversary quietly. The late Henry Pfeil organized the affair, and had commemorative t-shirts made. Thus Org was remembered for its geographical importance to the railroad and its interesting history.

Hot lure can make difference walleye fishing The 23 inch walleye I am holding in the picture is just one of seven consecutive walleyes I caught on a salmo on our first day of fishing in walleye bay of Cedar Lake, Manitoba.

We call our fishing spot “walleye bay” because in past years it has been a good producer for us. But this year offered us another new challenge, higher water.

Manitoba Hydro, which supplies much of the summer electricity that keeps us cool in Minnesota, closely monitored this year’s snow pack in the Canadian Rockies which are two provinces west of where we fish up-river from Lake Winnipeg. The snow pack was far less than normal and that told the Manitoba Hydro Hydrologists that they had better stock pile water for summer. Cedar Lake, the reservoir behind the big dam, is two and a half feet higher than average. That means that walleyes have millions more places for feed, even in walleye bay.

Number 5 shad raps in blue/silver, blue/pink, and blue/white were the “ticket” last year, so those were the top choices in our boat. I chose a purple salmo with a copper metallic body and then we started to troll. We Salmo Lure had to do some scouting, and finally after about 10 minutes, I got my first walleye. We proceeded to get a mixed bag of walleyes and northern pike; and in the process of trolling I nailed the 23- incher on the metallic salmo. Just one of 7 consectutive

walleyes I caught. When we headed back to camp, we had 17 walleyes and a bunch of northern pike for our first day of fishing.

We enjoyed baked walleye on the gas grill, walleye wrapped in those Pillsbury rollups Renee Giese makes, deep fried walleye cheeks, and special Hub DriveIn Cheese Curds that my grand-daughters who work there procured from the owner, Dayton Westra.

Everyone always enjoys the walleye cooked fresh from the cold waters of Canada, but the main attraction for our Ava, the 5th grader and Jack the 1st grader,in our group were the cheese curds and the deep fried potato slices.

The Greiners, our friends from Hancock, Mn.,. brought a giant tub of shrimp and cocktail sauce, and that was quite a hit with older crowd who were enjoying their evening “toddies.”

I got a “kick” out of listening to the conversations between my son and my grandson. Jack, the younger one, had more questions for his dad than could be answered in just 7 days. Often when

or disagreement.. This year’s trip went along smoothly. We had a lot of fun and made a bunch of memories. Thanks in part to Dana’s suggestion that I fish with a salmo. Now I call that lure 7 In-A-Row!

Humphrey, LBJ, Kennedy & Nixon They’ve all come to Worthington’s King Turkey Day

since 1912, more than twenty years longer than Worthington.

Worthington’s first celebration in 1939 with turkeys and the pancake breakfast technically was not the first time that turkeys were celebrated in the city.

Scramble for turkeys In December of 1934, approximately 3,000 people gathered on Courthouse Square in hopes of catching one of 100 frying turkeys and guinea hens which were dropped from the top of the courthouse tower, an activity known as the Goodwill Turkey Scramble.

The merchants’ goal for this event was to entice customers to town for Christmas shopping. Once the birds were in the air, thousands of arms and hands extended upward as people vied for a free Christmas main course. One bird landed on a roof across the street, one on a store awning, which was torn down in the scramble, and several in a tree where they became targets for snowballs to encourage them to fly into waiting arms.

Larger crowds gathered at later events; and in 1938, in order to make the event safer, the merchants put slips for free turkeys into balloons which they sent aloft.

However, when balloons drifted out onto Okabena Lake, four boys fell into the lake during their pursuit of a free Christmas main course.

Throughout the years of competition, the birds were part of memorable events including the kidnapping of Paycheck, whom Cuero opponents replaced in the cage with a sparrow. Another year the Texans secretly painted Paycheck’s toenails a lovely pink. The birds have been unpredictable during the race. In the 1981 Great Turkey Race, Paycheck flew away and landed on the Nobles County Courthouse, and in 2007 Ruby Begonia flew to the top of a Cuero clothing store building and then jumped from one building to another requiring the use of a helicopter to recapture her. A turkey’s spur cut Trainer Lew Hudson’s hand, and a veterinarian treated the injury for a fee of $2.25.

One year the August Schell Brewery produced a special Turkey Day beer for the celebration.

As America’s Great Depression gasped its final breaths and Worthington found itself a turkey production center surrounded by farms on which huge turkey flocks were raised, the seat of Nobles County hosted its first King Turkey Day celebration in October of 1939.

For a week merchants honored their customers by dressing as the farmers did in plaid shirts and denim overalls. The day began with a pancake breakfast, visitors could take home free turkey tail feathers which were in barrels in the downtown business district, a parade entertained bystanders, and a noble tradition began after getting the attention of newspapers, radio stations, and, of course, politicians.

The merchants met their three goals for the event: publicity for the community, focus on their customers from a wide area around the city, and expression of thanks to those who did business in Worthington.

The 1940 celebration was a success, also featured the free breakfast and parade, and gained the attention of Life Magazine.

Because of the efforts of Gay Hower, who owned the two Worthington theaters; newsreel cameramen photographed the festivities and released them to movie theaters around the world. However, within weeks of that celebration, the wind, snow, and ice of the Armistice Day Blizzard of November 11 killed tens of thousands of fat turkey toms which were on range and nearly ready for processing for Thanksgiving Day tables. In Worthington, these turkeys would have been taken to the two processing plants, J. C. “Jack” Bootee’s Hatchery and Produce and E. O. “Creamery” Olson’s Worthmore Creamery.

After that blizzard, insurance companies paid 80 farmers $184,510 for an estimated 118,000 birds which died in that storm.

The traditional King Turkey Day button established itself as a tradition when it was introduced in 1941. World War II affected this tradition, however, with the issuance of a paper button in 1943 because of the shortage of metal which was earmarked for the war effort and the cancellation of the Turkey Day celebration in 1944 and 1945. In 1948 the button was replaced with souvenir patches and scarves. The button returned in 1949 and has been sold every year since then.

Friendly rivalry After Creamery Olson visited the Turkeyfest in Cuero, Texas, and returned to Worthington, he suggested that live turkeys, usually bronze birds and then later white birds, should lead the parade down Main Street. Other traditions were added to the festivities, the breakfast and parade moved to Saturday instead of the middle of the week, and the tie between the two Turkey Capitals of the World—Cuero and Worthington—began to tighten in friendship when in 1972 the Worthington King Turkey Day Committee challenged Cuero to a live turkey race which became known as the Great Gobbler Gallop.

Each year since then Worthington’s turkey named first Tomfoolery and later Paycheck, a name chosen because nothing goes faster than a paycheck, and Cuero’s turkey named Ruby Begonia have raced in two heats the first of which is run in Worthington and the second of which is run in Cuero. The turkey with the best combined results of the two heats is then

declared the winner, and the winner’s city then earns the world title, the Traveling Turkey Trophy of Tumultuous Triumph, and bragging rights until the next race is run. Although Ruby Begonia won the first

Sightseeing can take rocky path in Granite

Rocks are a part of our everyday life, whether we realize it or not.

We kick rocks, skip rocks, step on rocks, and slip on rocks. There are rocks in town, rocks at the lake and rocks in the country. We build rock gardens, rock walls, and rock fences. We carve rocks, collect rocks, wear expensive “rocks” on our fingers, and even own a pet rock.

Heck, some of us even have rocks in our head.

But in Granite Falls, they have the rock of ages. Discovered by geologists in 1974 in the Granite Falls area was a

“granite gneiss (pronounced NICE)” rock formation, which dates back 3,800,000,000 years ago, making it the oldest exposed rock discovered on Earth.

That’s basically the same age as the moon rocks that were brought back to Earth by Apollo astronauts.

Dr. Samuel S. Goldich of Northern Illinois University and Dr. Carl E. Hedge of the United States Geological Survey made the determining dates from samples of the rock.

But the discovery decades ago is worth witnessing simply because of its historical significance.

“We get asked about the rock often,” said Jennifer Disbrow, director of the Yellow Medicine County Historical Society. “It seems like there is always someone looking at it and reading the plaque beside it. It’s pretty amazing when you think about how old it really is.”

The YMCHS building was built along the Minnesota River in 1967 and, by coincidence, an exposed portion of the rock was discovered on the property only a few yards south of the building when geologists were working along the Minnesota River Valley area.

Geologists estimate this Granite Gneiss was formed 3,800,000,000 years ago.”

Granite gneiss, a holocrystalline shale rock, consists or quartz, potash feldspar, acid plagioclase, and mica. Its colors range from shades of pink, red and gray.

Tracy Box Car Days has 89-year tradition Tracy has bragging rights to one of the oldest community festivals in Minnesota.

The celebration was launched in 1927.

Pipestone takes aim for Civil War Days America’s enduring fascination with the Civil War will be played out in Pipestone this summer.

“Civil War Days” returns to the Hiawatha Pageant Grounds in Pipestone for two-days of historical pageantry, Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14.

The bloody 1861-65 war was a national tragedy, the tore the country apart and resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. Pipestone’s Civil War Days sheds light on the men and women of that era, and what people experience and endured during the epic conflict.

Music of the Civil War Just as it is today, music was a vital element in the everyday lives of men and women of the Civil War. Music was sung and played at home, in the camps by the soldiers, performed by regimental bands on the march, and was often played on the battlefield. Oasis amidst the prairie Shetek State Park called region’s ‘best kept secret’

“I didn’t expect this in southwest Minnesota,” said a camper at Lake Shetek State Park. “All the trees and water and we’re not ‘up north.’ We’ll be back!”

Other campers who selected the Shetek site expected wide open prairies with strong winds. Driving, walking,

hiking or biking through the park reveals scenery in sharp contrast with the surrounding landscape.

Shetek, an Ojibwe word meaning pelican, denotes the many white birds residing by the lake. At one time much of the park was pioneer farmland. The first pioneer settlement was established in 1856, and by 1862 about 50 people lived in the area. All that changed on August 20,1862, when the Dakota War took the lives of 14 settlers, and other settlers survived by fleeing the area. Permanent settlements again started sprouting up 10 years later. Little did those folk know how popular the area would be 150 years later.

The state park offers several levels

of camping styles. Four camper cabins provide the security of solid walls and the scenery of the wooded areas for visitors unable to bring a moveable shelter with them. At the other extreme, a primitive group camp (Wilderness Camp) or Prairie Campground’s 12 rustic campsites will keep campers close to nature.

Eight tenting sites along a hiking path are carved out of a wooded area. Wooden handcarts enable campers to “cart” their gear to a campsite. The name Oak Woods Campground describes a wooded area with 70 drive-in campsites separated by green grass. Two modern restroom/

shower buildings are provided. Although Sunrise Campground has 32 full-service (water, sewer and electricity) sites, it isn’t in a wooded area.

Every camper has a favorite mode of camping, preferred amenities, and favorite campgrounds. The best way to learn about these preferences is to talk to a camper. The best way to learn about Lake Shetek State Park campgrounds is to have Tony Doom, part time campground host, introduce you to campers while riding on his golf cart and weaving past multiple styles of mobile camp homes.

Tony and his wife, Gerlinde, are veteran campers themselves.

One responsibility of a campground host is to greet and welcome each new family/group to the park. To enhance their camping experience, Tony makes himself available to answer questions that arise. He presents first-time guests a Welcome Kit containing information about End-O-line Park in Currie, the Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove, a Minnesota Explorer paper, a recent copy of the Sailor to acquaint newcomers with other tourist opportunities in southwestern Minnesota and finally, a poster-size photo of a pelican.

“Why did you select this state park?” is one question Tony will ask a camper.

Several on the evening of July 9 said they were in the area to see the Wilder Pageant. Some looked on the Internet to find a suitable campground. Others just like state parks.

“Minnesota camps are quality. The best in the nation,” said one young father.

“I’m very impressed with the facility.

It’s so clean and well maintained,” said Norma, the Dooms’ visitor from Nevada.

Larry, Norma’s husband, added, “It’s got things for everyone to do.”

Two first-time families visiting from Hartley, Iowa, and relaxing around their campfire liked the trees and the shade they provided. Their site was quiet and they didn’t contend with traffic.

An Illinois couple camping in the Sunrise Campground came to attend the Wilder pageant. “We love this campground,” they agreed. The wife added, “ I liked walking on Loon Island and seeing the wildlife.”

Campers ranked Lake Shetek State Park as the best in Minnesota, and others said it was one of the best in the nation.

Tony credits the Shetek park’s success to a crew—paid staff and volunteers—who get along with each other and care about the park.

A group called Friends of Lake Shetek State Park helps with park projects, like the walk-in carts near the hiking path sites. The Chickadee Check Off on Minnesota tax returns contributes funds for wildlife and their habitats at the state park.

once covered this area with thick ice over 15,000 years ago.

Over time, the glaciers began to melt and formed a large lake in the middle and northern part of North America, including north central Minnesota, which was called Lake Agassiz. Its area was larger than all of the modern Great Lakes combined.

When this vast body of water overflowed, various outlets emerged and formed the Red River and Lake Traverse flowing northerly. Another outlet of Lake Agassiz formed Big Stone Lake near Ortonville, and led to a large outflow that was dubbed “The River Warren” by scientists.

The prehistoric River Warren eventually drained Lake Agassiz and the enormous outflow carved a mighty valley which occupied a much smaller Minnesota River and Upper Mississippi River. That led to the creation of what is now termed the Minnesota River Valley.

As the flow receded, it settled into what are now over 10,000 lakes in our state, as well as the abundance of vegetation, marine life and animals. That, in turn, led to the migration of man in this area.

And the turbulent River Warren that carved through the mountainous rock over time left a large area of exposed granite gneiss.

When the granite gneiss was discovered in this area, scientists and geologists from all over the world flocked to the Granite Falls area to study and collect specimens of the ancient rock. Using radiometric dating methods, they were able to determine the granite

The radiometric dating technique is the principle source of information about the absolute age of rocks and the geological features, including the age of Earth itself, which is approximately 4.5 billion years old.

So substantial was the news of the discovery in Granite Falls, that it was reported by nearly every major media outlet across the country.

Today Nobles County is the only Minnesota county that has a Hubert Humphrey Memorial, which is located at the Prairie Justice Center in tribute to the man who attended at least a dozen Turkey Day celebrations first as mayor of Minneapolis following a dangerous flight through his final 1976 visit the day after which the world learned of his cancer diagnosis.

In 1960 Worthington invited President John Fitzgerald Kennedy to attend Turkey Day festivities, but Vice-president Johnson, the only uninvited guest speaker, came in his place. Because of heavy rain the parade was cancelled and the speeches were moved to the Central Elementary

Thanks for the fishing trip memories Tim Grefe, Dave Ralls, George Bloom, Dave Samuelson, Clint Rohrer, Tom Lano, Charlie Miller, Stan Nordin, Mike Engebretsen, Chuck Buschena, Craig Hettenback, Sam Toner, Seibe Muller, Jake Konkol, Larry Hafner, Bob Spartz, Alvie Kadolph, Larry Henderson, Rich Meaden, Jim Lingor, Charlie Hopkins, Doc Schwartz, George Brockway. Do you recognize any of these names? One is a banker in Butterfield, one is a retired DOW Chemical marketer, one owned a parts business, some have passed away, but all of them are part of my memories of fishing trips.

Many fishing trip memories returned to me this past week when I heard from Tim Grefe and Dave Ralls. I shared a boat with each of these guys on the Winnipeg River over 30 years ago, and this week I received e-mails from Tim and a personal visit from Dave and his wife as they journeyed from Indianapolis, Indiana, to a family reunion in Clara City.

Tim read about himself in the SAILOR and that prompted his response, and Dave was reconnecting with business friends he made when he represented DOW in the Sioux Falls territory.

Fishing trips create unforgettable memories and really special shared experience bonds.

Dave mentioned the two guys wearing orange rain coats going around in lazy circles when they each fell asleep while trolling in their boat after a giant shore lunch of fresh walleye; washed down with a copious amounts of Labatts

In Tim’s e-mail he accused me of taking advantage of him when he became frustrated with a valuable reel he had won at a banquet and sold it to me for the paltry amount of $50. I had to remind banker Tim that I was just taking advantage of what the reel market was offering me at that particular moment.

The market advantage was compounded by the fact that Tim had had it with the reel.

I never hesitate to remind Clint Rohrer of the incident where he unexpectedly decided to do some inventory reduction of his equipment by losing the grip on his new rod and reel while casting.

He and I got a final look at the rod and reel as it seemed to be suspended above the waters of Wally’s bay before it vanished into the depths. This caused Clint to exclaim: “Oh my.”

Charlie Miller, Mike Engebretsen, and Stan Nordin picked out a boat they liked. Stan, being a former air force pilot and instructor, was piloting the boat.

Charlie, an insurance agent and real

estate man, decided to handle the paperwork, maps. Mike had a broken ankle at the time, so he just sat comfortably in the front seat of the boat and rode along.

After shore lunch, the trio decided to return to the main camp. Halfway back to camp they became confused because they didn’t recognize any land marks.

Charlie looked at the map and said to Stan: “Yup,” Stan replied: “Yup, what?” Charlie consulted the map one more time and said: “We better go back where those other guys are!” They were lost and almost ran out of gas on the return trip.

For some unknown reason, Dave Ralls picked a 8 -inch long Suick musie lure out of my tackle box and asked me what it was. When I told him it was a muskie plug, he inquired if he could catch anything with it. I told him to go ahead and try. With a two handed swing, he hurled the big piece of wood toward a sheer rock wall, then stopped it just in time to have it drop right next to the wall.

Before I could say Suick, he caught a bass that just missed the Manitoba Master Angler record book. I was incredulous; I had never caught anything on a Suick!

To Tim, and Dave and all the men, women, and kids who accompanied me on my fishing adventures, I say what Bob Hope would say: “Thanks for the memories.” Thanks for the e-mails, phone calls, and special thanks for the visits.

There is still a lot of summer remaining for you to make some memories of your own.

‘Sounds of Summer’ set The Sounds of Summer is coming back to Marshall Thursday to Saturday August 18-20.

Live music will be played daily.

Thursday to kick off the festivities there will be inflatables for kids at the Hitching Post and entertainment by Hicktown Mafia at 8:30 p.m.

The fourth annual golf scramble will be held Friday, August 19 at 12:30 p.m. The Carter Strong three on three basketball tournament will begin at 2:30

p.m. Friday Night Lights is back with entertainment by Colton Dixon, Moriah Peters, and Bread of Stone.

Saturday kicks off with the Tiger 5000 5K race and walk at 8:30 a.m. The craft and vendor show will be taking place from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Great Plains Tractor Pull is one of the attractions at the Murray County Fair, August 17-20.

Get ready for tractor pull August is here and so is the Murray County Fair. The dates for the fair this year have been set for Aug. 17 through the 20. Many activities are planned throughout the week.

The fair kicks off Wednesday with 4-H shows, and the opening of the midway at 4:00 p.m. the grandstands will host the Great Plains Tractor pull at 7:00 p.m. that evening.

The Prairie Ecology bus will be making an appearance on Thursday along with a backseat driver competition in the Grand Stand that night.

The kiddie tractor pull will take place Friday at 5:30 p.m. A wine tasting will be

at 5:30 p.m. provided by Painted Prairie Vinyard in the Heritage Hall. The stock car races will occupy the grand stand for entertainment in the evening.

The 5K Cowbell run/walk event will take place at 8:00 a.m. with registration starting at 7:15 a.m. The parade will start at 1:00 p.m. in downtown Slayton. The grand stand show will be an endure car race at 7:00 p.m.

Brown C. Fair opens Aug. 10

The Brown County Free Fair will be held rain or shine in New Ulm August 10 through the 14. Livestock shows will be kicking off the festivities on Wednesday.

The 4-H pet show will begin at 4:00 p.m.

The fair will officially open at 5:00 p.m. that evening with a demolition derby at 7:00 p.m.

Thursday is senior day and there will be a senior citizens program at 10:30 a.m. at the Civic Center. Horses will be shown starting at 8:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. Jerry Frasier will be entertaining the crowd.

Kids’ day is Friday with lost of activities for young ones. There will be entertainment throughout the day at the Civic Center Stage, Entertainment Hall as well as others. The kids pedal pull will begin at 1:00 p.m. and is for children 4 years and older.

Parks & Trails plate selected On online voting contest that attracted 30,000 votes has selected a new Minnesota state parks and trails license plate.

The winning plate features an image of a canoe on the water, surrounded by Minnesota’s four seasons.

Michelle Vesaas of Coon Rapids submitted the winning design, which was one of three finalists.

“My design was inspired by being in the outdoors in this beautiful state through all four seasons,” she said.

“Even in the coldest days of winter, if you’re dressed for it, there is incredible beauty to be found.”

The new license plate will be available from the Department of Motor Vehicles this fall as part of the ongoing celebration of the 125th anniversary of Minnesota state parks and trails. The cost will start at $60, plus tax. The total includes a onetime $10 fee for the plate itself and a minimum $50 contribution (renewable annually).

“Purchasing the new license plate

will be a great way to show everyone on the road that you ‘go the extra mile’ to support Minnesota state parks and trails,” said Erika Rivers, DNR parks and trails director.

The plate provides their owners with unlimited access to all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for the year, replacing the need for an annual vehicle permit (a $25 value).

Proceeds from license plate sales will help fund the operations and maintenance of Minnesota state parks and trails.

The DNR already has eight Critical Habitat license plates from which Minnesotans can choose.

These specialty plates—first offered in 1995— provide an opportunity for citizens to support conservation and show their individuality by purchasing a license plate featuring a loon, a moose or another Minnesota-related image. The parks and trails plate will bring the total number of specialty license plates available from the DNR to nine.

Remember when outboard motors went into the car’s trunk?

Fishing Do you remember the last time an automobile salesman used the size of the car trunk to sell you a car? Have you ever started an outboard motor by wrapping a knotted rope cord around a fly wheel?

Rich and lean, do you recall why they were important settings on an outboard motor? Yes, folks, once upon a time cars had trunks and outboard motors were only owned by mechanically inclined people.

My family did not have anyone you could call a sportsman in today’s sense of the word. When they went fishing, the outboard motor went into the car trunk, fishing rods were either tied to the rain gutters of the car or laid across the backs of the front and rear seats. Fish were put on a stringer that was tied to a boat, and in the case of walleyes and northerns, they were transported home in a 5 gallon pail or a wash-tub.

Our family car was a Chevrolet Fleetwood 4 door.

People in our economic class all drove used cars. Our neighbors drove Plymouths, Hudsons, Mercurys, Fords, one or two Nash automobiles, and the neighborhood had one new Oldsmobile, and one Pontiac.

Baumgartner’s Hudson had the biggest trunk, but my dad was pretty proud on the trunk of our Fleetwood 4 door sedan.

Outboard motors with the names of Evinrude, Johnson, Martin, Merccury, Scott-Atwater, Chrysler, Champion, Sea King, Wizard, and Eska were owned by parents of my neighborhood friends.

folks only used their outboards a couple of times each a year when they went North for a week to lakes with funny names such as Pimush and Wabedo, and familiar names like Leech, Cass, Winni, and Kabetogema.

All of the outboard motors were two stroke gasoline powered motors, so mixing gasoline and outboard motor oil was necessary. Motors all came with mixing directions about how much oil to mix with how much gasoline. Sounds simple until you get a math problem such as this: If you have 2 and a ½ gallons of gasoline, how much oil should you add to 2 ½ gallons to make a mixture of 20 parts gasoline to 1 part of oil? And 20 to 1 wasn’t the only ratio you were required to work with. No, sir, some engines wanted a mix of 32 to 1; and in the later years, 50 to 1 was the recipe.

A friend and I once purchased mixed fuel for his old maroon Johnson Sea Horse. We bought a mixtue that was 50 to 1 and used it for part of a night of fishing. The Seahorse needed 20 to 1. Luckily, we lived in Slayton where a man named Clarence Taarud knew the ins and outs of outboards. He tore the Seahorse down and had the crank shaft rebuilt by Jim Meaden. The bill for the

whole deal was $32! After that, I have always considered Clarence Taarud to be a saint!

To give you some idea about what a monster problem mixing gas was to most of us, 4 of us guys headed for fishing on the Winnipeg River argued all the way from Winnipeg to Pointe du Bois about how many liters make a gallon and what 50 to 1 meant in liters. Finally, one guy who wasn’t big into math said: “Why don’t we just buy premixed gas from the lodge; they must mix it for their motors!”

Great answer.

Wonderful solution.

Except for one thing, they charged us $5. 65 a gallon when gas was $1.99 in the states!

Before recoil pull type starters, outboard motors were started by wrapping a rope with a knot on one end and a wood handle on the other around a motor’s flywheel. Place the speed selector on start, pull the choke out, and give the motor one really hard spin ----- and if it was your lucky day, the motor would start. After about 10 more frustrating pulls, you became tempted to begin messing around with the lean and rich settings. At this point, most average men were in way over their heads and it was time to find an outboard motor head for help.

When the recoil starter hit the market, it ranked right up there with the advent of sliced bread. You could pull, and pull, and pull like a maniac without rewinding the rope. This could be dangerous to a person sitting on the seat one spot toward the front from the driver, because sometimes the second

person would lean forward to make a rich or lean recommendation at the same time the pilot with into his fast pulling rountine. Once on Lake LeHomme Dieu on opening day, I witnessed a guy get knocked out cold when he leaned forward to give some advice.

For just a few seconds, the guy pulling the starting rope thought he killed the other guy because his right to the jaw sent the other guy backwards off the seat.

He came to rest with his eyes rolled back and his head resting on the front seat!

Ah, yes, the good old days of fishing included: mixed gasoline leaking from your motor into the car trunk. Drowned northern pike you had drug all over the lake all day on a stringer. The anchors that came with rented boats all were coffee cans filled with concrete with an I-bolt stuck in it. Rental boats that seldom had oars that were the same length. Now think about that for a minute, then you will understand why you seem to be going in some kind of circle! Always, even on the hottest summer day in August, always fishing with rubber foot coverings because all wooden rented boats leaked.

Electric starters for outboard engines, automatic chokes, computer controlled fuel mixtures, four stroke engines that start immediately, depth finders, GPS, lights, and even a roof over your head, fishing is so easy now just about all a person has to do is fish. If only a person knew where they were biting!

Lyon County Fair has later time slot The Lyon County Fair has changed a bit this year. Instead of the first weekend of August, it will now be the second weekend. August 10-14.

Many events are scheduled for the week including the PRCA rodeo on Thursday and Friday evenings. The Dakota Thunder six-horse hitch that was featured at the Tournament of Roses in California on New Year’s day will at the fair Thursday and Friday. On Saturday the demolition derby will take over the grandstand at 7:00 p.m.

and exhibits, there will also be a variety of free entertainment. The BMX stunt show is back again this year for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The children’s pedal pull is Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Dueling dogs will be jumping to new heights on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Ralco enrichment center.

There will be musical entertainment as well. Hicktown Mafia will make an appearance along with Roxbury and Six Appeal.

Restored 1886 style

“Every innkeeper has her own flavor,” says Kathy Lozinski, innkeeper of Arbor Inn B&B in Marshall. She and her husband, Jerry, have converted a mother’s suite in an 1886 house into a 5-room B&B guest suite.

They moved to their home at 305 N. Fifth Street, Marshall, 18 years ago. Their previous home, just down the alley from their present location, was also a B&B; however, raising 4 children came first in their lives, so they downsized. It wasn’t long before the former mother’s suite was transformed into a B&B suite equipped with a kitchenette, sitting room, bedroom, bathroom and porch.

Guests have a separate entrance and can come and go without disturbing their hosts. The Lozinskis deliver a “basket breakfast” at a pre-determined time, so their guests can eat in the privacy of their own suite.

The Sailor published a story earlier this summer about a B&B that was originally an inn for railroad workers and another B&B that had been a photography studio in its first life. The Arbor Inn house was built as a farmhouse near Marshall in 1886. The town gradually surrounded the house, and now it sits in a quiet residential area a couple blocks from Marshall’s downtown shopping area.

John & Josie Schutz built the farm home and lived there from 1886 - 1931 when they sold the residence to their son for $1. The house has stood empty only a couple years during its 130-year history.

One of the later owners lived in the house 30 years but made no improvements or updates. When the Lozinskis became owners, they began updating. Their goal was to maintain the 1886 style when decorating or making improvements.

One of the biggest jobs was stripping 5-7 layers of wallpaper before painting the walls. Kathy kept wallpaper in a couple rooms because it complemented the style and age of the house. She has also kept the cupboards and decorative tin ceiling in her own kitchen.

Most bed-and-breakfast facilities offer at least two guest rooms, but Jerry and Kathy are retired and have grandchildren they like to share their time with. “We’re as busy as we I want to be,” says Kathy.

“We’ve met a lot of interesting people,” said Jerry.

“We also have a lot of returning visitors,” added his wife of 48 years. “I tell my guests it’s like staying with a relative, but you don’t have to put up with your relatives.”

As mentioned in previous stories, the innkeeper is key to the success of each B&B. Husbands certainly play a vital supportive role in the hospitality, but much of the hosting work falls to the
