Seaforth fest plays final song

North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin—entertained the crowd of polka music lovers. The polka fest attendance continued growing, and in the early years over a thousand cars brought polka music lovers to Seaforth.

When the Kastens sold the bar and moved out of town, the Seaforth Booster Club, formed to organize Seaforth’s 75th anniversary, took over plans for the annual C4th Polka Fest. This year’s celebration was held July 17-18.

A beanbag toss competition was held Friday evening before Dain’s Dutchman (Sleepy Eye) and County Line 57 (Marshall) provided music for dancers, or those who enjoyed watching the

Thirteen groups showed up to perform beneath a tent set up behind their bar, the C4th Bar. “They came without any promise of being paid,” said Donna. “All we gave each musician for coming was a silver dollar.”

Word must have spread quickly because the second year bands from three states performed in two tents set up in front of the C4th Bar. Another year six bands from five states—Minnesota,

Bragging rights In polka circles, Seaforth has earned the title “The smallest polka town in the United States.” With a population less than 100, the town has held its own against larger towns, not just in Minnesota, but across the nation.

Unfortunately, there will be no Seaforth Polka Fest in 2016. While planning for this year’s event, it became evident that the town’s once popular polka fest had served its purpose. When it began in the 1970s, many people had close ties with their ethnic traditions, including their appreciation of polka music. People passed their love of polka on to their children and grandchildren. But today, polka-style music doesn’t have the popularity it once had.

Marvin Bernardy said, “The writing’s been on the wall the last few years.” It has been increasingly difficult to find enough people to volunteer their time to make the event a success.

The Kastens have attended all 42 polka fests. Their love of polka has deep roots because they met at an old time music dance in Brownton at the Lake Marian Ballroom.

Duane said of Seaforth’s polka fest tradition, “This has been one of the longest running in the state. Others have closed down in recent years. We appreciate all the hard work done by the Booster Club as well as by Marvin and Maureen Bernardy. ”

A co-ed softball tournament followed Saturday morning. Over 40 kids ages 3-11 years tested their mettle in a pedal tractor contest as onlookers cheered them on. Winners became eligible to compete in the state tournament in September.

Older youngsters tried their aim in a junior beanbag competition.

The Larry Olsen Band (Lake Benton) started playing at 4 p.m. for polka enthusiasts. Polka King Gene Hendrickson (Spring Park, MN) and Polka Queen Maddie Spiess (Madelia) represented the Polka Lovers of America organization.

Olsen’s band took a break at 5 p.m. during the outdoor Polka Mass and the catered chicken supper that followed in the Community Center. The polka band Adam & The Jolly Jammers (St. Augusta, MN) provided the music.

ATV width now affects classification The State of Minnesota began using the width of all-terrain vehicles to determine how ATVs are classified and where they can be ridden. This change will affect ATV owners, but they don’t need to take action until their current registration expires.

ATVs were defined in the past by weight and engine size. As a result of legislation passed in 2015, Minnesota law now defines an ATV as a motorized vehicle with: • Three to six low-pressure or nonpneumatic tires and; • A total dry weight of 2,000 pounds or less; and • A total width (measured from outside of tire rim to outside of tire rim) that is 65 inches or less.

An ATV with a total width of 50 inches or less is considered a Class 1 ATV. A Class 1 ATV is typically designed for a single operator who straddles the machine and uses handlebars to steer, but some Class 1 ATVs are designed by the manufacturer for off-road use with a seat belt, rollover protection and a steering wheel.

An ATV with a total width that is greater than 50 inches but not more than 65 inches wide is considered a Class 2 ATV. Class 2 ATVs typically have a steering wheel and are designed for the operator and passenger to be seated side by side.

ATV owners can continue to display an unexpired registration for their Class 1 or Class 2 ATV until it expires. New registrations and transfers will continue using the present registration system until the DNR upgrades are complete.

The ATV registration system will not be programmed with the new definition of an ATV until 2016.

There is no difference in the cost of registering a Class 1 or Class 2 ATV (a three-year registration is $45 for both), but the classification affects where each type of ATV can ride.

“All ATV riders need to observe the signs designating Class 1 and Class 2 trails,” said Mary Straka, OHV program consultant for the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. “They also need to be aware of the laws about riding ATVs on roads and in ditches. Most ATV riders will not be affected by the new definitions, but others will enjoy expanded riding opportunities. For example, only Class 2 ATVs were previously allowed on road shoulders, but now Class 1 ATVs can ride on the shoulders of some public roads, too, if they have a seat belt, rollover protection and a steering wheel.”

Shetek continues to cast its magic spell

Ahhh, those lazy summer days at the lake.

This month’s cover is a reminder that the cooling waters of the region’s lakes have long been a summer mecca for people. The image shows a young Tracy girl, Bonnie Ives, on the shoreline of Lake Shetek in the 1920s. The black and white photo was color-tinted with oil paints, in the best-available color photography technology of that era. Her father, Freeman Ives, a studio photographer in Tracy, took the portrait.

Leisure time for the middle class was a relatively new concept in the 1920s.

The first white settlers who arrived in the region in the 1850s, and the flood that followed in the post-Civil War era, looked at lakeshore property in practical terms. Shoreline timber was valuable for building homes and barns. But by the 1890s, the well-to-do of Tracy and Slayton had begun establishing summer cottages along Shetek. Early in the 20th century, two large resorts had been established on the lake, at Teepeotah and on Valhalla Island. Picnics, ball games, dances, swimming and boating at the lake became popular.

“Although just two hours drive by automobile from Springfield to the cooling banks of Lake Shetek,…not many

of our town have visited the pre-historic surroundings—composed of a large and beautiful body of water with native trees of the oak, basswood, hard and soft maple, elm, and ash varieties. The main land at different points around the lake of many bays is also heavily timbered.”

The editor noted that 20th century vacationers weren’t the first peoples attracted to the lake.

“Two weeks of cottage life at the popular Tepeota (sp) resort gave the writer a splendid opportunity to study the surroundings and also to visit many points and places of pre-historic significance.

The several mounds located on high ground in the vicinity of the lake prove beyond a doubt that several centuries ago the mound builders had full and undisputed control of the surroundings.” He described finding many arrow tips, spear points, and pieces of Indian pottery “scattered in the sand along the shoreline of the lake.”

No doubt the Springfield newspaper man would be surprised by the hundreds of houses lining Lake Shetek today, along with the roar of pleasure boats and jet skies leaving wakes in the waves. Yet Shetek’s “beautiful body of water” with its oaks and islands continues to enchant and beckon visitors to its shores today.

Sleepy Eye invites visitors to enjoy a taste of summer at Buttered Corn Days, Friday and Saturday, August 21-22.

Free buttered sweet corn will be served on Friday, along with 1919 root beer floats and beer. Craft vendors will be set up, and live music will be performed.

The festival’s parade takes place on Saturday afternoon.

Pre-corn fun is planned Thursday, August 20, when the Sod House Theatre presents “The Hoopla Train with Yard Master Yip and his Polkastra!” This show will be taking place at the Historic Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye. The variety show is a bit of Lawrence Welk crossed with Hee Haw. There is live music, singing, sketch comedy including music by the Sleepy Eye Concertina Club.

Fishing hooks young lad with unforgettable time

My son Paul was eight years old when he made his first trip to Canada with me. His son Jack has been lobbying to go to Canada this year because a friend of his went last year. The boy who went last year was four years old, and my grandson Jack will be seven in September so he figured he was old enough. When Paul approached me about taking Jack, I said it would be fine with me. So a couple of months ago Paul informed Jack he would be going with us this year. This is the story of Jack LeTendre’s first trip to the Saskatchewan River located 250 miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

later than usual this year, but there was still a lot of daylight remaining after 6:30 p.m. so Joe and Renee Giese headed for the river to fish a little on our first night. In less than an hour they had beached their boat by our camp cabins and were knocking on the door. Joe said: “Grab your rods and come and get into the boat. The walleyes are biting like sunfish!” So Paul and Jack left with Joe and headed for the river. Two hours later I was taking pictures of the 24 walleyes the four of them had on a stringer.

Jack caught his limit of walleyes on the first night of his first trip to Manitoba. As his dad was cleaning fish, Jack said to me “Those are the most walleyes I have ever caught in my life!” Remember his is only six years old, but he has already learned how to talk fishing.

Our annual trip to the Saskatchewan River was the first of Jack’s life. Along the way he observed our boat being steamed cleaned by Manitoba Fisheries folks so we didn’t bring any zebra mussels north with us. He watched his dad visit with a customs officer. He enjoyed breakfast with the guys and gals at Fargo, and he observed his dad buying him a fishing license in Ashern, Manitoba.

On day number one, we began our fishing with nightcrawlers and spinners, but the walleye action was so hot and heavy that Paul announced we were all switching to quarter ounce lead jigs and paddle tail plastic lures. The river current took us toward the tall bridge a couple of miles downstream and the jigs bounced off rocks, and every rock felt like a walleye bite so we would automatically

react with a hook set. If a fish wasn’t there, the paddle tail would take a quick sprint toward the surface and when we let it fall – bang- the walleyes would hit it hard. Jack missed a few but caught a lot.

On day two, Jack introduced me to a new boat snack called “spits.” He was eating some and spitting some and then he offered me some. They looked like sunflower seeds, they tasted like sunflower seeds, and the hulls flew out of a person’s mouth like sunflower seeds.

When I asked Jack if they were sunflower seeds, he said that no-one calls them that; everyone calls them “spits.” So we enjoyed spits for the next three days.

On day two Jack’s dad introduced him to lures called shad raps, and Jack quickly learned the jargon of walleye patterns. I started with a Clown, his dad started with a Firetiger, and Jack was given a Blue and White. Jack sat in the second seat by the windshield and was

put in charge of a line-counter reel with a really big deep sea crank handle. The stiff musky rod the reel was attached to didn’t bend much, but the loud clicker on the reel told Jack when a fish was on. Jack battled some nice northern pike and walleye, and being six years old, he won some and lost some. To his credit, Jack knew when he was overmatched in a fight and he would immediately say: “You better take it Dad, I can’t handle it.” It was a good lesson for a six year old to learn. As Kenny Rogers would say: “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, and know when to walk away.” Jack’s judgment was pretty good.

On the afternoon of day number two, Paul took Jack fishing for Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout. Jack caught a very

nice big Rainbow, but told me the Brown trout would have to wait until his next trip. The father son combination came back to camp with the six fish limit of Rainbow trout, and Jack caught one of the biggest fish.

On day three, we traveled 25 miles across big water to reach our favorite big pike spot. The trip there was fairly comfortable. Jack tried some casting, but he isn’t quite at that skill level, so he spent more of his time sorting, classifying, and making lure suggestions to his father and me. Jack enjoyed waking up the 10 lb. northerns in our boat livewell. He really liked to get them to splash their tails and throw water on him. It was then that his father and I came to the conclusion he might have a stock control job in his future because he counted the same fish over and over and over. He was never unhappy when we threw back fish we felt were too small, but it really hit him hard when his dad announced: “Too big, we have to throw it back.” More than once Jack said: “Man that was a big fish — why do we have to throw it back?” And more than once, his dad explained to him that rules are rules and you have to play the game fair.

Then he would always add, “If we take the big fish, eventually all we will have is little fish. Big fish have proven they are the best of the breed, so those are the ones we want to make more fish just like them.” It wasn’t long and Jack was talking the same talk as his dad.

The 25 mile trip back to camp was made in a 20 mile per hour crosswind, and Jack and I got pretty wet riding on the side of the boat closest to the wind.

We banged and bounced over and

through waves for the better part of 90 minutes. Once during the trip we took a pause to talk with our traveling friends.

Jason said it best when we stopped. He said: “If this was easy, everyone would be doing it!” Then we headed back into the whitecap waves. We were never afraid, so Jack was never afraid either.

On this trip I discovered the following things. My grandson Jack likes scrambled eggs, but French toast is not his favorite. Jack likes shaved ham on buns from Willies Bakery in Morris, Mn, and his dessert preference runs to Kit Kat chocolate miniatures. He likes walleye, but he doesn’t want any breading on it — he just likes his dad to make it on the grill with light seasoning. Jack’s mother is a dental hygienist so he is not allowed to eat candy, so he really enjoyed the Bing bars and Kit Kats we brought along. His dad reminded him with regularity that what happens on a Manitoba Fishing trip stays in Manitoba.

Jack didn’t forget his dad’s advice, so when we arrived at the customs window on our return to the United States, the lady at customs immediately zeroed in on him in a motherly way when she asked if he caught a lot of fish. He said yes, we caught lots and lots of fish.

Then came the clincher. “Did you keep the fish that you caught?” Jack replied: “No we just kept throwing them back.”

Then with a motherly smile she said to us: “Pull ahead so that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Officer can check your fish.”

On Jack’s first trip to Canada, he passed the final exam. He is now officially a member of the LeTendre Third Generation Canadian Fishing Team.

Burma Shave...

Motorists couldn’t miss the message!

While growing up in the late 30s, 40s and early 50s, I was told more than once that the first two written words I recognized were “Burma Shave.” It just might have been true as my sister and I always looked for the signs along the road. I was generally put down by my older sister Carol as she could read the entire wording while I only recognized the white letters with a red background – Burma Shave.

In those difficult years, we usually had access to gasoline, tires and a decent car as my dad ran the Ford garage in Slayton from 1936 until the 50s. We took a few fishing trips “up north” and often followed the popular baseball teams of Iona, Hadley, Slayton and Fulda.

During the war years of 1941-1945, mom drove several times to Wisconsin to be with her ailing mother in Elmwood.

(I even attended part of second grade in that beautiful little town.) From 1948-51, I was one of the bat-boys for the Slayton town team. Their games took us all over southwest MN, plus Sibley, IA and Madison and Brookings, SD. I kept my eyes open for Burma Shave signs. Dad’s family was in the South Dakota area of Mitchell. We also often made that trip.

Looking back, I realize that they probably varied the route, seldom taking the same route twice to keep my sister and I alert and looking for Burma Shave signs. At one time years ago, I memorized several of the jingles. I also recall that South Dakota presented the longest message of a Burma Shave sign due to the flat and straight roads, lack of traffic and not many trees or bushes.

Ted Rowe who writes interesting columns for the Marshall Independent, did a Burma Shave article some time ago and it fired up my interest to do the same. Our children, their spouses, and nine grandchildren have never heard any of the jingles, some of which are very memorable. For example: “Ben – met Anna – made a hit – neglected beard – Ben-Anna split.” Ted cited one I had never heard, despite following Gopher football through the 1940s. Possibly it first appeared even before I was born.

“Hit ‘em high – hit ‘em low, follow your team on WCCO.” I learned from Ted’s article that 19251963 frames the years of Burma Shave signs. Ted states that by 1935, they began using many safe driving messages; an area in which Ted has worked long and hard. Quoting Ted on a few he used: “Don’t take a curve – at 60 per – We hate to lose – a customer.” Another “No matter the price – no matter how new – the best safety device – in the car is you.”

Likewise: “The one who drives – when he’s been drinking – depends on you – to do the thinking.” And: “At intersections – look each way – a harp sounds nice – but its hard to play.” Be sure to catch

For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs (probably those 55 and under) you need to realize what travel was like across America in those days before 1963. Today’s speed (80 MPH on SD Freeways), they are gone forever. TV, modern technology, interstate highways, and powerful autos are here to stay.

Someone west of Tracy wrote to the Tracy Headlight-Herald several years ago. They particularly enjoyed the signs between the Garvin Corners and Tracy. (I also recall the jingle). “Past school houses – take it slow – let the little – shavers grow.” That particular article indicated that if you submitted a jingle that was accepted, you would be paid $100.

Later the price increased considerably.

Property owners on whose land the signs were posted (100 feet apart) usually received $25 per year. I’ve read that some

bargained for more and often got it for a prime location. Twenty-five to $100 was a lot of money in the late 1920s and Dirty ‘30s.

I particularly remember signs between Garvin and Tracy, Tracy and Walnut Grove, and just south of Slayton on Highway 59. The most famous jingle that appeared in the Midwest and elsewhere found the signs saved and placed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. It is: “Within this vale – of toil and sin – your head grows bald – but not your chin.”

From a 1963 Saturday Evening Post article by Wm. Zinsser I gleaned that despite the Burma Vita take over of Burma Shave, “The signs were only reduced from 6,000 to 4,000 and motorists still found the jingles loveable.” However

Petroglyphs: Older than Stonehenge

Native Americans carved petroglyphs (drawings in stone) at the Jeffers Petroglyphs site centuries before the Stonehenge monument in England came into existence. The site is three miles east of the intersection of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 30, and three miles north on County Road 2 in Cottonwood County.

Tom Sanders, site manager and archaeologist, calls the petroglyphs “one of the world’s great sacred places.”

Sanders, Jeffers Petroglyphs site manager since 1999, traces his genealogy back to the Miami and Cherokee American Indians. Thousands of years before the “white man” set foot in the region, Native Americans came to pray and worship their gods. They also left a record of their people in Sioux quartzite rock like the well-known red pipestone found near the Minnesota town named after the rock.

European settlers discovered the site as they moved to the area in the 1870s, and interest grew as news of the unique carvings spread. In the 1960s, area residents worked together to preserve the site for future generations. In 1966, the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) bought 80 acres from the Warren Jeffers family. The site became a destination for tourists, local residents and school children’s field trips.

Early research disclosed 2,000 stone carvings at the site. For more than five summers starting in 2006, Sanders led an effort that removed lichen

from rocks adjacent to the previously discovered rock carvings. The efforts of archaeologists, their students, conservators and elders of the American Indian community uncovered another 3,000 carvings.

Removing the fungus that anchors itself to rock is a labor-intensive endeavor.

Before the lichen can be removed, the area needs to be covered with black plastic for a time to prevent the plant growth from thriving under the sun’s rays. After the plants are dead, workers carefully removed the plant remains.

Today a total of more than 5,000 carvings confirm that native Americans from many tribes visited the site and recorded their history, just as writers today write their memoirs. Those who study the individual carvings and compare images learn much about

American Indian ancestors, including their knowledge of mathematics, astronomy and medicine.

Thanks to the Minnesota Historical Society, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Nature Conservancy, 1,200 acres in the area are now native prairie supporting 300 plant species. Of the 160 acres at the historic site, 33 acres are native prairie and 127 acres contain prairie construction.

Prairies are classified as wet, mesic or dry. Soil near the rock formations is shallow, and thus dries out easily, creating an environment for plants adapted to drier soil. The rock face sheds water that accumulates in a single area where cordgrass and sedge are predominant. Between the two areas, the mesic environment exists.

Eye-opening experience Nothing replaces seeing the carvings in person and listening to an interpreter doing just that—interpreting the carvings along the ridge of quartzite covered in drawings anywhere from 7,000 to 250 years old.

At Stop 3 of the petroglyphs tour, the interpreter talks about a turtle and a circle drawing, where it is inferred that people would pray to the turtle for protection or for good weather 2,500 to 3,000 years ago. The circle has possibly 40 different American Indian meanings.

Among them are the earth, source of life, universal power, or a drum used with songs offered to the spirits.

“The earlier carvings are of animals, who are the helping spirits,” explained Sanders. Animal stories were told for a reason. For example, a Dakota Elder story tells of a wolf and a talkative eagle.

The eagle asked, “So, Wolf, what do you think?” Wolf responded, “If you don’t shut up, you might learn something.”

New perspectives JoAn Bakker, whose recently released the children’s book “Field Trip to the Jeffers Petroglyphs,” has a long history with the petroglyphs site. She and her husband, Wes, were among those who helped contact the Minnesota Historical Society about acquiring the site. Sanders hired her as an interpreter when he arrived on site in 1999, a position she held for a few years.

‘Looney Lutherans’ set for Murray County Fair The Looney Lutherans will perform two free shows on Thursday, August 13, at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., under the big tent at the Murray County Fair in Slayton.

The idea for the “Looney Lutherans” was cooked up in 2006 when the founding members were appearing in the hit musical Church Basement Ladies.

This team of professional actresses have come together to create a fun, interactive, family-friendly show.

The three-woman performance will include vignettes on “living the Lutheran way.” Sketches will include the Lutheran “food wheel” (all roads lead to hotdish); a Lutheran rap (eat like a Lutheran); and Lutheran beauty tips. Audience members will be invited on stage to help demonstrate a Lutheran exercise routine using dish towels, and two teams of audience volunteers compete for cans of corn in the fast-paced game show, “Potluck.”

Vineyard becomes multi-faceted mecca A vineyard near Round Lake is an unexpected delight.

Driving through the Southwestern Minnesota countryside, expects to see fields of corn, or soybeans, or alfalfa, but to happen upon acres and acres of grapes?

That is the sight one will see along Highway 264 a few miles south of I-90.

Round Lake Vineyards and Winery boasts 18 acres of rich farmland, covered with rows and rows of lush green grape vines. Turning into the vineyard’s entry road, one is greeted by the shady canopy of large trees. A gentle turn opens up to a beautiful view of Round Lake, and grounds that all but say “come, sit, relax!”

Proprietors Scott and Jenny Ellenbecker are seeing the fruition of a dream that began in 1987, during a visit to California’s Napa Valley. Upon seeing Napa Valley’s vineyards, and experiencing its wine, the couple was entranced.

“We loved the atmosphere, loved the wine,” says Jenny. Scott, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jenny, who grew up on the estate that was originally purchased by her grandfather, were more familiar with traditional prairie crops.

“It was through research that I learned that grapes can be grown in Minnesota,” says Scott.

The couple, who have been married for more than 20 years, purchased 65 acres in 2002, but grape-growing would be a few years down the road. They grew crops on some of their land, and raised horses. About nine years ago, the couple opened up their first business venture, Ellenbecker Communications, an ad agency that produces in-house magazines for companies.

By 2007, the Ellenbeckers were ready to plant their first crop of grapes. Some 2,500 plants were dug into the rich

Minnesota soil on the estate. The couple smiles remembering those early times.

From the beginning, they had friends and family enthusiastic about the endeavor, who pitched in and helped.

It takes three years for grape vines to establish and grow mature fruit, so by 2009 the first of the grapes was ready to be harvested. Harvesting was done by hand, and the grapes were sold to other growers.

In 2012, a new building was erected.

“Our plan when we built was to house Ellenbecker Communications on the second floor, and have tasting rooms, and an adjoining fermentation room on the main floor,” says Scott. There is plenty of

room in the tasting areas to move around, sit at tables with friends, or be seated at the unique solid wood bars and enjoy a taste of wine. The fermentation room contains huge tanks that hold the juice from crushed grapes, and the barrels in which the wines mature.

The main building is equipped with a spacious wrap-around patio with bistro tables and chairs, and beautiful landscaping that includes small waterfalls and ponds. Beautiful shrubs and flowers adorn the grounds. Views of the lake to one side, and fields and vineyards on the other are spectacular.

“We needed to hire a winemaker, and in September of last year, Sam Jennings came in for an interview,” recalls Scott.

Jennings remained for a weekend, working along with the Ellenbeckers, virtually non-stop, for four days. The Ellenbeckers had their winemaker, and Jennings was given the opportunity to use his expertise and palate to create unique wines for the business.

Jennings brought with him experience with northern tier grapes, a must for the Minnesota climate. To date, grape varieties grown by the Ellenbeckers include Bluebell, Brianna, Frontenac Gris, King of the North, La Crescent, Louise Swenson, Marquette, Petite Amie, Petite Pearl, Sabrevois, St. Pepin, and Somerset Seedless.

Wine labels There are currently four red wines on their private label, including a Merlot, Zinfandel, Wine Maker’s Blend, and Cruisin’ Red Wine. Six white wines are offered, including a very popular Reserve St. Pepin, the Reserve La Crescent, Frontenac Gris, Apple Honey Cuvee, Adelweiss, and Cruisin’ White Wine.

Wines range from very dry, to very sweet, and offer a wide variety for discerning palates. Two of the wines of note are the Frontenac Gris, a semi-dry white wine, of which other winemakers have asked Jennings in vain, for the secret recipe.

They were, and the Apple Honey Cuvee was born, with unexpected and delightful hints of nuts and spice, and a dash of cinnamon, a perfect after-dinner pairing with holiday pumpkin pies and desserts.

In mid-July, the Ellenbeckers will introduce a new variety of wines under the “Skinny Dipping” label. Scott and Jenny find humor in their creation.

wanted a sort of ‘living in the moment’ feel to it.” In fact, the labels on the bottles indicate what the couple was striving for, and what Jennings created, for the label: “Skinny Dipping isn’t for everyone. It’s for those living in the moment. It’s a burst of confident fun. It’s an attitude that smiles and says, Why not? The fruity sweetness in each bottle is delightfully innocent and naughty at the same time.”

Although wine is the main focus of the establishment, the establishment also offers beer and a selection of hard liquors. Non-alcoholic beverages are also included, along with a sampling of appetizers. Patrons can enjoy flights of wine – small sample tastes of a variety of the private label wines manufactured on-site.

Warm response The Round Lake Vineyards and Winery opened its doors to the public on June 5 of this year. Thus far, the days— especially the weekends— have been full of people wanting to experience something that is decidedly different.

“We wanted to offer quality wine in a relaxing atmosphere,” says Jenny. “We wanted people to have a California wine experience.” Something that is certainly unusual in the midst of Minnesota farmland.

There will be even more to offer as summer turns into fall, as the Ellenbeckers have almost completed a 5,000 square foot new building. 3,500 square feet will be dedicated to a reception area that can hold up to 200 guests, complete with a catering kitchen and rest rooms. The building boasts three huge garage-type doors that can open, creating an easy flow from inside to the outside terrace, from which guests can stroll down to the lake under the shade of trees that were planted 50 years ago. The other 1,500 square feet will house the wine cellar. The reception hall will be perfect for wedding receptions, anniversaries, retirement parties, and more. Weddings can be held outdoors, with trees as a background, or in the vineyard fields themselves. Groups and bus-tours are welcome, and with spacious grounds, there is room for everyone.

In the future, the couple plans to build a dock that will be suitable for those boating on the lake to tether their water crafts, and saunter up to enjoy the offerings of the establishment. This is actually a throw-back to an earlier time, when a “boat livery” was available to renters in the 1940s and 1950s.

Bus tour set for 1862 Shetek sites

A “Shetek Revisited” bus tour is planned at Lake Shetek State Park, Saturday, August 22.

The guided tour, led by Roseann Schauer, assistant Lake Shetek State Park manager, will focus on Shetek sites related to the 1862 Dakota Conflict.

On August 20, 1862, bands of Dakota warriors attacked a settlement along Shetek’s east side. At least 14 white settlers, and an unknown number of Dakota, died in bloody clashes that day.

Most of the dead fell in a marsh several miles east of Shetek that is today called “Slaughter Slough.”

The remains of 14 people are buried underneath a monument within the state park. The reconstructed Andrew Koch cabin, outfitted with 19th century pioneer artifacts, can be seen at the state park. Markers in the park note the locations of other pioneer cabins.

Slaughter Slough is now a Waterfowl Production Area managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. A marker made up by three stones honors the Shetek settlers who lost their lives, the Dakota Indians who inhabited the land prior to white settlement and suffered from of broken government treaty promises, and the “Fool Soldier” group of Teton Lakota, who risked their lives to negotiate the release of the Shetek women and children who had been taken captive into what is now North Dakota.

Advance reservations are required for the bus tour. Call the Shetek State Park office at 507-763-3256. Cost is $5.

Participants should be at the park by 8:45 a.m.

Lighterside Clowns walk on sunny side of street

For a “lighterside” look at life one might want to see where Lighterside Clowns will be entertaining next. Doug “Happy Face” and Sharla “CandyKisses” Bengtson take their job very seriously, as serious as a clown can.

With eight members to date, ages

ranging from seven to 66 years old, this fun group travels the area entertaining crowds.

The clown group was organized in 1996. Happy Face and CandyKisses even recruited their children into their act. Doug Bengtson aka Happy Face began clowning when his daughter was born 25 years ago. In 2005 he received

Sather family has rich legacy in Round Lake If you have ever purchased a small “hanging bag of candy” – also known as “pegboard bags” – you have John Sather (1888-1955) to thank for it. Sather was in the grocery business in Round Lake back in the 1930s when he began to purchase trainloads of cookies, which he would repackage and sell to other businesses in southwestern Minnesota. Eventually, he added other products, including candy.

“Sathers’” candy became a staple in the area, with easily recognizable red and yellow labels.

By the 1960s, the company had expanded its outreach to many surrounding states, and sold products that were produced on site (such as nut-roasting) as well as purchased and repackaged (including candies made by the Farley Candy Company). Sathers was one of the first to use telemarketing

to market their products. By the 1970s, Sathers became known nationwide as a distributor of candies and other repackaged products for K-Mart.

In 1996, the Sathers Company and the Farley Candy Company were purchased by the Favorites Brands company; and continued under the name “Farley’s & Sathers.” In 2012, the company merged with the Ferrara Candy Company.

Within a year, the company had closed its operations building in Round Lake.

John and his wife, Eleanor “Belinda” Sather, raised their children in rural Round Lake, purchasing land along the lake itself. The family’s estate grew over the years, and they had various enterprises, including boats that could be rented. The land has continued to be owned by Sather descendants.

Wheels museum marks 30th The Wheels Across the Prairie Museum in Tracy is celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer.

Special events are planned at the museum over Tracy Box Car Days, Sept.

4-7, to mark the anniversary. Free ice cream sundaes will be served Saturday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting for the new museum was held June 1 of 1985, with Mayor Dale Johnson Sr. cutting the ribbon, and curator Mary Lou Ludeman serving as the emcee.

Over the past 30 years, the museum has grown dramatically.

Today’s museum include a 19th century log cabin, a Chicago & Northwestern depot, a country school, the Amiret Post Office, the Monroe Town Hall, and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. A 1915 switch engine and tender car that was moved onto railroad tracks at the museum in 1990.

A wooden boxcar and a caboose were added later. A family history addition was built onto the museum’s main barn two summers ago.

Miniature train rides have become a popular attraction for children in recent years.

when a group of Tracy people began planning a community celebration marking the town’s first 100 years. The Tracy celebration was held in 1976 to coincide with the nation’s bicentennial observance. Local historical artifacts were gathered and placed on display in downtown storefronts.

In the wake of the 1976 bicentennial, an effort began to create a permanent museum to tell Tracy’s story.

The Wheels Across the Prairie Museum was incorporated, and Andrew and Martha Wixon donated 2.5 acres of land on the west edge of Tracy as the museum site.

Tracy Box Car Days rolls toward 90th How long has Box Car Days been celebrated in Tracy?

Well, a Minnesotan by the name of Charles Lindberg flew across the Atlantic the same year that Tracy celebrated its first Box Car Day. Much has changed since 1927, but Tracy Box Car Days remains a Labor Day weekend tradition for many.

The 88th annual Tracy Box Car Days culminates with a Monday afternoon parade (1 p.m.) Other highlights of the Sept. 4-7 celebration include: Friday—Chamber Burger Night, beer pong tourney.

Saturday—400 Open golf tournament, softball tourney, old-fashioned kids’ day at Wheels Across Prairie Museum, BBQ rib cook-off, Texas Hold ‘Em tourney,

Burma Shave signs, once everywhere, have become rare museum pieces

when Phillip Morris bought Burma Vita in 1963.

The signs were taken down and the money spent on the loveable signs went into TV advertising. Few readers 55 and under would know that Burma Vita (a liniment product) was a Minneapolis MN company that eventually had signs in every state except Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. Massachusetts also had very few due to the thick foliage along the road. The company was founded by Clinton Odell in 1925 but struggled economically. The name of the original product came from the fact that three of its essential oils came from Burma. A chemist named Carl Noren working for the Odell’s developed a successful shaving product and was destined to become famous. Alan Odell, the elder son of Clinton, came up with the idea of putting signs along the roads as an advertisement. His dad disagreed but did put up $200 for Alan to at least give it a try.

No doubt, the most dramatic Burma Shave sign appeared in 1958 near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It read: “Free, free – a trip to Mars – for 900 – empty jars.”

According to Ted Rowe’s article a Red Owl Grocery manager collected the 900 empty jars. The Burma Shave Company put up another jingle. “If a trip to Mars you earn – remember friend – there’s no return.” The man collected 900 more empty jars and the company did send the winner to Moers, Germany. (Moers being pronounced Mars.) Burma Shave did include the trip back home.

The signs (and product itself) were affective, repeat orders poured in and business sky rocketed. In a Bill Vossler article, he wrote that the company went from zero income to $68,000 in one year.

Clinton Odell wanted a wholesome company, he’d say “No, that jungle might offend someone.” Burma Shave even urged on the WWII war effort: “Maybe you can’t shoulder a gun – but you can shoulder the cost of one – buy defense bonds.” Vossler also wrote “at the height of their popularity, more than

700 jingles appeared on 40,000 signs.”

I have a friend in Balaton who owns a book that provides a reader with every Burma Shave sign, you can also find many on the internet. One of their final jingles in 1963 was: “When the stork – delivers a boy – our whole darn factory – jumps for joy – Burma Shave!”

Friendship born of love of ducks On a morning a dozen or more years ago he came into the DNR office at New Ulm looking for a certain someone. That someone was out so he was directed to me. I knew from the get-go that this was someone I wanted to know.

Much has been written about the importance of friendship, less about how one is grown. I went to work that day with no idea I would meet a new friend.

Neither, I’m sure, did he as he drove from his home in Tracy up Highway 14 to New Ulm that morning.

He came into my office carrying a duck decoy. Carved it myself, he said, as he handed it to me with hands that spoke of a lifetime of hard labor. When you meet someone new a fair amount of dancing around often seems necessary as the search for common ground begins.

Not so on this day, with this man. Our common ground was ducks - duck hunting, more precisely - and there was little need for dancing.

Our friendship grew slowly. His family owned land adjacent to Lake Maria, near Garvin, and their willingness to enroll portions of that land in a conservation program was crucial to a restoration project at the lake. After an agreement was reached and the restoration project begun we stayed in contact. Then one day he invited me and a couple friends to hunt on the family property. It was an invitation that allowed us to meet other members of his family and the circle of friendship steadily grew.

With the family farm on the shore of Maria as a base camp of sorts, we access the lake at the site of the original farm house, the same house where 3M Company executives stayed back when my new friend was just a lad, back when the lake held considerably more ducks. That house, where the boys from 3M swapped their fancy duds for duck canvas coats and muddy boots, where they once cooked, played cards, imbibed and slept, still stands. Barely.

Inside, covered with a coat of dirt and grime blown in over the seasons through windows no longer holding glass, can be seen scattered broken dishes, slumping ceilings, bed springs, splintered chairs and stove pipe. I sometimes peer through the open doorway, reluctant to step inside for fear of un-trusty floor boards, and imagine the men I have seen in my friend’s old photos. I see them wandering about, just as they did decades ago when they were young, posing for a picture next to the stove, laughing and jabbering,

Wood Lake Fair marks 75th year

What’s billed as Minnesota’s only city street fair plans five days of festivities, Saturday through Wednesday, August 22-26 in downtown Wood Lake.

Community Fair includes Traidmarx (Monday) Tina & Lena, and Tracy native Kayla Daniels (Tuesday), and a Wednesday night street dance featuring IV Play.

It has been many seasons since my old friend from Tracy last hunted ducks.

This man who built buildings with brick and block and mortar and waded easily through water and cattails to retrieve downed ducks. He must use a wheelchair these days. I’ve never heard him complain about his fate, not beyond an occasional brief utterance about how he sure wishes he could go one

more hunt. He expresses the wish and then becomes quiet for a moment, his knowing blue eyes cast downward. The musing passes quickly, however.

Yet, although he can no longer hunt or drive or build a building, there is much he can still do. Gifts to offer. He can sit in the sunshine on the deck, for instance, and fashion small duck boat replicas and decoys and give them as special gifts, as he has done for several of us. Small treasures from a friend, they are.

There are things he can no longer do, sure, but that no more defines him as a man than my gray hair defines me. What matters is what he can do, what he can give. And what gift could he possibly give than to serve as an inspiration to those closest to him, his grandkids especially, by demonstrating that the only real disability in life is a bad attitude.

This old huntsman has already given me my gift. The gift of friendship. And to think it can all be attributed to a love of ducks.

Pipestone to host ‘Paranormal Weekend’

Pipestone is planning a “Paranormal Weekend” Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11.

Organizers at the Pipestone County Museum describe the activities this way: “A whole weekend’s entertainment will be offered including a psychic gallery reading, ghost hunt, and presentation by featured speaker Chad Lewis, author of “Minnesota Guide to Haunted Locations.”

A guided tour of Woodlawn Cemetery, and a local play performance are also planned. A costumed guide will lead “Ghostly Walks of Historic Downtown Pipestone.”

A weekend package includes a three night stay at the Historic Calumet Inn,.

Art Crawl gains momentum

Like a river slowly meandering its way into a bigger body of water, the Meander Art Crawl has steadily progressed into an economic boost in western Minnesota.

Now in its 12th year, the Meander Art Crawl is a free self-guided tour of 45 artists from 40 studios sites, galleries and shops in five counties. The widely-

popular event is held on the first weekend in October each year. This year’s Meander will be held Oct 2-4.

Studios open at noon on Friday, Oct. 2.

The Meander Art Crawl was a vision of Ortonville artist Don Sherman.

That vision, which become a reality in 2004, was designed to create a regional experience that would encourage artists to embrace where they live and to invite others to share common interests in art.

“When the Meander first started, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said Andy Kahmann, who runs A to Z Letterpress Printing in Montevideo, a shop in which he hand-prints calendars, cards, and block prints. “But I was blown away with how many people showed up in my shop. It’s really promoted well and draws people from all over.”

Nearly every artist involved in Meander echoes Kahmann’s statement.

“Originally, they wanted to start out with at least three studios in the Meander,” said Jo Pederson, who owns Stony Run Woods Studio with her husband Dale in Granite Falls, selling native willow and rustic furniture and accessories. “But we had 35 studios the first year. We’ve always had a very good turnout and it’s been fun getting to know the other (Meander) artists and the people that are here to look and to buy.”

“We have been involved with Meander since the first year,” said Lucy Tokheim, who runs Tokheim Stoneware Studio with her husband Gene in Dawson that sells Scandinavian pottery, silver jewelry, traditional knives, paintings and prints.

“It has been tremendously helpful to our business. The Meander not only features crafts and artists of the region, but also promotes the beautiful geography of this region.”

Artists participating in the Meander will be exhibiting things such as painting, photography, willow furniture, chainsaw art, pottery, quilts, hand-knit and handwoven items, ceramics, handmade jewelry, and much more.

The revenue generated from last year’s event confirms the increased popularity of the event. The total reported Meander art sales to customers during last October’s event was $108,207, up from $90,000 the year before.

“It is encouraging that after 11 years, the Meander continues to grow,” said Fernholz, a Meander artist who is also Senior Planner of the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission, which provides administrative assistance to the artists.

“And the increase in art sales is only part of the story – it is the economic boost for small businesses in the region and the quality of life awareness the Meander brings that really pays the dividends.”

– are all located along the Minnesota River. Not only do the artists benefit, but communities within each of these counties also benefit. Many of the visitors spend more than one day at the Meander, boosting economic activity over the past decade for area hotels/motels, eating and drinking establishments, retail stores, gas stations, and more.

“We attract visitors from eight states throughout the Upper Midwest,” said Fernholz. “You can’t buy the kind of word-of-mouth name recognition that comes from a high quality event like this.”

The Meander is governed by a volunteer steering committee of artists who start meeting in December to plan the Art Crawl. The steering committee consists of six to 10 artists that are involved with the Meander.

Artistic standards “Artist control is a fundamental feature of the Meander,” said Fernholz. “The artists don’t want to get in a situation where non-artist participants end up with controlling interests which often can diminish the artistic integrity of the event.”

Many of the artists have participated in the Meander from the beginning. Each year, some may not participate for one reason or another, but there is always new artists waiting to get a chance to showcase their art.

“There are four new artists this year,” said Patrick Moore of Montevideo, one of the original organizers of the event.

“A new artist may apply to attend the Meander, but there is criteria that must be met and they have a review board that makes the final decision.”

Artists are required to live and work in the region, or they must have been a longtime resident of the region.

“We consider this event a great example of bottom-up economic development that can happen when entrepreneurs, government agencies, non-profit organizations and creative people work together,” said Moore.

Refurbished theatre brings back Main Street movies

After a three-year hiatus, the downtown Canby Theatre opened in April with over 350 patrons viewing “Fast and Furious 7” in the larger Theater I and the new “Spongebob Squarepants” movie in Theater II. “That was a good number,” said Mike Tesch, who manages the city-owned theatre. “In a small town of 1,700 or so, that’s a pretty good percentage.”

The original Canby Theatre debuted Nov. 13, 1939, with the showing of “Hollywood Cavalcade”. The original theatre had no concessions in its lobby.

Instead, movie goers would buy treats elsewhere. Eventually, a concession stand was added to go along with a spacious lobby, a lounge area, and two crying rooms.

To date, the theatre’s revival has garnered over $300,000 through donations and fundraisers.

“We’ve made a lot of changes and a lot of repairs,” said Tesch. “We have a lot more changes and repairs we would like to do, but it’s going to take a lot more money.”

One of the largest individual donations came from twin brothers Jim and Jerry Rhea. The siblings wrote a check out for $25,000 to the Canby Theatre fund in honor of their late wives, who also happened to be sisters. They would often double date at the theatre.

Original red seats have been replaced by modern seats with cup holders. The middle section of the theatre has seats that rock slightly for more comfort. On the backs of each seat in Theater I are nameplates that were purchased by donors for $200 a piece.

“Some people bought them and had their own names put on them,” said Tesch. “And some bought them in honor of someone else. Several of them were bought by relatives of the theatre’s first owner, William Stieder.”

The lower section of Theater I has 210 seats, with approximately 30 seats still available for donor plates. There is also a handicap accessible section in the main theater.

Theater II has 75 seats.

“We have digital in Theater I, but not yet in Theater II,” said Tesch. “So we’re trying to raise enough money to go digital in that theater, too. It’s 35 millimeter film viewing in (Theater II) now and there just aren’t a lot of movies available to show that way.”

About 100 of the original red seats, still in good condition, were installed in Theater I’s balcony.

Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $6 for children ages 3-12 and senior citizens age 60-and-over. Children under three are admitted at no charge.

Concession prices are reasonable when compared to most other theaters.

popcorn, candy, water and soda. In the future, they would like to expand to items such as ice cream, nachos and mini doughnuts.

Movies are shown for two weeks at a time. Generally, there will be one showing in each theater from Monday through Thursday, two showings on

Fridays and Saturdays, and a matinee on Sunday.

“We are trying not show any “R” rated movies here,” said Tesch.

The theatre is run by a group of volunteers, including Tesch, who is the co-manager at Runnings, Inc. in Canby.

“We have a good group of volunteers,” he said. “They all really care about the theatre and want to make sure it stays open.”

Tesch works the concessions, changes the marquee, manages the inventory, orders the films, and sweeps up at the end of the night. Other volunteers will run the ticket booth, work the concessions, and help with anything else that needs to be done.

“I used to work at the theatre from 1990-2008,” Tesch said proudly. “So I wanted to do what I could to get it opened again.”

The entire theatre will undergo refurbishing at some point as additional funds are raised. Various fundraisers have been held to generate some additional funds toward the theatre.

“We have several fundraisers planned when it’s slow in the fall because the farmers are in the field then,” said Tesch.

“We are planning to show 45 different

classics in September and October. We will have films like ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.”

Plans are for the theatre to host an illusionist on stage in August, and a White Sidewalls concert in October.

The City of Canby owns the Canby

Theater.
