Wheels Across the Prairie Museum
Opening its doors on June 1, 1985, the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum depicts the transition to using steam engines and the horseless carriage in the Tracy area. The depository showcases wheel artifacts from the agricultural, railroad, and automotive sectors to represent the industries that allowed the county to thrive. As visitors approach the city of Tracy on Hwy 14, they are greeted by the museum’s signature 1915 freight train that was part of the St. Paul railroad system. A blacksmith shop, an 1897 train depot and a new display of local Tracy authors are a few of the exhibits visitors can expect to be educated on in the historical domain. Wheels is also a Bluestar Museum for active military personnel. 3297 US Hwy 14, Tracy, MN 56175 Hours: Opening June 1 June-September: Wed-Sun. 1-5 p.m. or by appointment Admission: $4 for children 12 and under $8 for children 13 and over

Founded in 1872, Rail service didn’t exist for the first 30 years of Currie’s life until a single railroad track was built into the city but wasn’t expanded further west of town and the nickname “End-OLine” was originated. The 38-mile track began in Bingham Lake in Cottonwood County and ended at Currie, and the train was turned back around on a fifty-six-foot wood and steel turntable. Although the original turntable was damaged in 1922, a larger seventy-foot turntable was built on the same site. Today, the turntable is still operational as an educational ride for park visitors. The museum tour showcases railroad artifacts, steam engines, a replica of the county’s first courthouse, and the original Currie depot, among others. 440 North Mill Street, Currie, MN 56123 Phone: 507-763-3708 Hours: Memorial Day Weekend-Labor Day Wed. - Sun. 10 am-5 pm Guided and Self Guided Tours Offered Fall Hours (Sept. 5-Oct. 22, 2022) Open Select Hours or by appointment Visit our website closer to Labor Day for details Guided tours admission $7.00 for adults 18 years and older $5 for students 6-17 years FREE for children 5 and younger, veterans, and active military/blue star families Walnut Grove Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum The family of Laura Ingalls Wilder voyaged across the American frontier, traveling by a covered wagon to locations like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Indian Territory, and Dakota Territory. Ingalls Dugout Site Located 1.5 miles north of Walnut Grove, the Ingalls Dugout Site is where Laura Ingalls resided from 1874 to 1876. Rumor has it that visitors can recognize plum thickets, tablelands, spring, and other locations that Laura writes about in her book, “On the Banks of Plum Creek”. Laura’s parents, Charles and Caroline, sold the property after three crop failures and 71 years later, the 172-acre farm was purchased by Harold and Della Gordon. The pair didn’t know the historical significance of the estate until Laura’s book illustrator, Garth Williams, tracked the Gordons after viewing court records revealing their farm to be the location of the Ingalls dugout. 13501 County Rd 5, Walnut Grove, MN 56180 Hours: Seasonal from dawn until dusk Admission: Based on the honor system $7 per car or $40 per tour bus

Area Lake Shetek State Park Lake Shetek is the largest lake in southwest Minnesota, spread across five miles with a maximum depth of 10 feet. “Shetek” originates from the Ojibwe word meaning “pelican”, a bird that makes its presence known on the lake during the warmer months. Visit the 45-acre Loon Island that connects to the mainland by a 1,000-foot causeway. Explore the island by hiking the 2.77-mile Loon Island Trail. The park also includes the only remaining original cabin of Lake Shetek called Koch Cabin with a monument in memory of pioneer settlers. Don’t forget to apply that SPF before hitting the swimming beach, boat launch, or a six-mile bike trail that brings you to the town of Currie. Hit the summer waters by renting a boat, canoe, or kayak. If you are hoping to stick around for a while, consider camping at one of the 32 campsites with full hookups at Sunrise Campground. 163 State Park Road, Currie, MN 56123 Hours: Park open daily from 8 am-10 pm; Office hours vary Admission: Vehicle permit required and the price varies. For more information, contact the park office at 507-763-3256. Willow Lake Lutheran Church One of the area’s oldest churches was built-in 1899 and established after a couple with connections to Laura Ingalls Wilder donated the church. The church’s last service may have taken place on Oct. 22, 2006, but the sanctuary still hosts community events and weddings as well as sing-a-longs on the same weekend as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant that is held in Walnut Grove. Costing only $2,000, the congregation first named the 50x28 foot building Willow Lake
Museums Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran until 1934 when it was renamed to Shetek Lutheran and lastly to Willow Lake Lutheran in 1943. 1907 230th Ave, Currie, MN 56123

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Pageant
Want to Relive the Good Old Days? “Come Home To Laura!” The popular Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant tells the story of 1870’s life in the fledgling prairie town of Walnut Grove. This year’s LIVE outdoor drama is set for Fridays and Saturdays, JULY 8-9, 15-16, and 22-23! The family-oriented two-act drama depicts the Ingalls family living near Walnut Grove in the 1870s. Staged in a beautiful natural amphitheater near the banks of Plum Creek a short distance from Walnut Grove, the outdoor drama is faithful to the “Little House” books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Area volunteers make up the cast and production crew of over 60 people. The pageant, in its 45th season has played to over 300,000 people. This story is based on the fourth book in the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, “On the Banks of Plum Cree Creek.” ek ” The drama recounts the construction of the town’s church, prairie fires, and the grasshopper plague that wiped out the family’s wheat crop. Elaborate stage sets are complemented with professional lighting and sound systems. The Ingalls’ dugout home, a church, school and general store are among the sets. PAGEANT TICKETS Tickets are best ordered by calling the ticket office at 888-859-3102. Tickets will be held in Will Call. Email confirmation provided. Tickets may be purchased at the gate but call ahead for availability. Seating options are described on our webpage. VIP Seating $25. Reserved Seating price $20. Child may sit on adult lap without charge. General admission $18. Children age 5 and under admitted free in general admission. General admission holders should bring blankets or folding chairs for hillside seating. Gates open at 7:00 p.m.; pageant singers perform at 7:30 p.m.; performance begins at 8:30 p.m. The Wilder Pageant will be celebrating 45 years of performing “Fragments of a Dream.” A cast and crew reunion will be held Saturday, July 9 at 6 p.m. LOCATION One mile west and one-half mile south of Walnut Grove on Crown Avenue. The roads are all in good shape so far this year. Thank you to Mother Nature and the Minnesota Department of Transportation!
