Tracy Municipal Airport The Tracy Municipal Airport includes a 24-hour Arrival/ Departure building (unattended) and has fuel available onsite.

There is one paved runway and one turf runway. Ground transport is available (507-828-0147). The airport manager’s after-hours number is 507-828-0417. For questions, call 507629-5545 or email sdaniels@tracymn.org.

There are plans in the works to expand operations at the airport.

In the years since the formation of Tracy Development Corporation (TDC) a variety of activities have kept the organization’s volunteer board busy.

The non-profit organization devotes its time to fostering new or expanding businesses, developing properties, enlarging the membership base, holding forums about improved broadband for the community and other informational meetings — all with the ultimate goal of adding more jobs and increasing the tax base, with enlarged economic activity within the Tracy community.

In conjunction with other entities in the city, the TDC helped nurture an expanding pet treat company from New Hampshire, Chasing Our Tails, to re-locate in Tracy, together with other operations in southwest Minnesota.

This enterprise has and will continue to refurbish facilities for its ambitious plans of expanding operations as it sells products nationally. Currently several other properties that were acquired and marketed by TDC are in the final stages of acquisition by new businesses.

Since forming TDC in October 2017, financial support, by a growing membership, has come from individuals and businesses in the Tracy area, while former residents generously contribute monetarily, too.

Jim Keul, past-president of TDC, expressed gratitude by the board for the many contributors who have been a part of this short-term growth. He also acknowledged how

Tracy Area Chamber The Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce focuses on serving Tracy and the surrounding communities, hosting a multitude of different events that cater to many different ages and demographics. The Chamber also tries to space these events throughout the year to benefit community members. Annual events that take place currently include the following; The Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce has its Annual Banquet either at the end of January or the beginning of February to celebrate community members and the previous year’s success. There are many awards given out that evening which include Farmer of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Boss of the Year, Chamber Member of the Year, and the Diamond Award. This is a great night to recognize all the hard work community members have put back into the community of Tracy.

The Prairie Women’s Expo is a vendor show that is held each spring; the show has taken place for 13 years and the committee works all year long to make sure the next show is just a little bit better than the previous year. A twist for 2021: This year’s event will take place in Central Park on Saturday, June 5.

One fun event that generally happens mid-July is Night Golf! This event takes place at the Tracy Country Club and is a fundraiser for the Chamber. It’s a lot of fun to attempt golfing in the dark with balls that illuminate!

The largest event for the Chamber is Box Car Days on Labor Day weekend, an event that is huge for Tracy and

surrounding communities! It is a jammed packed weekend with events beginning on Friday evening and going through Labor Day with the Grand Parade at 1 p.m. sharp. Please look on the City of Tracy website or the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook for a full list of events and to keep up with any changes!

Another big event for the Chamber is the Tracy Area Car & Motorcycle Show. This show is in September and usually takes place in Central Park. This is open to everyone and registration takes place on the day of the show. There is always food, music, and fun had at this event!

There are a couple of events in the fall put on by the Chamber: the Halloween Parade and the Parade of Lights! The Halloween Parade takes place on the evening of Halloween and includes a freewill donation meal and walking parade for the kids. It’s always a great time!

The last event of the year takes place in the winter and is an all-day event. The Chamber, along with Chamber businesses, sponsors photos with Santa, and a Parade of Lights! Organizations, businesses and families dress up in illuminating outfits and walk through downtown while spectators enjoy hot cocoa and some glow sticks.

All of these events wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and support from the dedicated committee members, the committed Chamber Members and the supporting community we have here in Tracy.

Tracy City Council The Tracy City Council in 2021 grew from five to seven members.

In 2018, Tracy residents voted to expand by two the number of council members — a vote that reversed one eight years earlier that decreased the size of the council by two members. Three candidates from the recent election were elected to a four-year term, and two were chosen to fill two-year terms. To determine what vote-getters will be awarded which terms, the Tracy City Council on July 13 passed a resolution to award the top three vote-getters the four-year terms, and the fourth and fifth vote-getters the two-year terms.

The council meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall on Morgan St. Meetings are televised on Charter Channel 180 and Vast Channel 17/300. Meetings are also replayed at later dates and are available on demand at the City’s YouTube channel.

Tracy Aquatic Center The Tracy Aquatic Center, with lifeguards on duty at all times, has two large water slides, a smaller one next to the diving board, an Olympic-size pool and water fountains in the wading pool for the youngest of swimmers.

TRACY COMMUNITY – 17

Community Transit started its “Purple” route daily service in Tracy in May 2019 and offers three roundtrips each weekday between Tracy, Balaton and Marshall. Departure times in Tracy are 7 a.m., 10 a.m., and 3:30 p.m., with the bus returning about 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. The first departure from Balaton each day is 7:25 a.m. Fares for a one-way trip on the route are $3, or $6 roundtrip on a 60-mile loop. A Community Transit bus has been located in Tracy since 2014, with rides offered on an advance appointment basis. Minnesota Dept. of Transportation funding provided 85% of Community Transit’s expansion of services to and from Tracy, with local matches, and fares providing the balance. The United Community Action Partnership, which has an office in Marshall, operates Community Transit services in an eight-county area with a fleet of 30 buses. “Blue” and “Red” Community Transit routes are offered throughout Marshall. “Dial a ride” services allow people to arrange transportation pick-ups either by bus or through volunteers driving their own vehicle.

That service is still available for Tracy residents.

Sanford Tracy Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital and rural health clinic and also offers outpatient specialty services. A 30-unit senior housing complex is attached to the facility. Satellite clinics are located in Balaton and Walnut Grove. A team of board certified clinicians including two Family Medicine nurse practitioners and one physician’s assistant, one pediatrician, one behavioral health nurse practitioner and two licensed, independent clinical social workers provide quality care.

Tracy Area Schools Tracy Area Public Schools include the Little Panther’s Den, Tracy Area Elementary School and Tracy Area High School.

• The Little Panther’s Den is owned by Tracy Area Public Schools and has a licensed child care center that offers programs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and before/ after school programs for children, up to age 12. The Den also includes a Head Start program for pre-school age students, along with the Little Panther’s pre-school, which has a morning class for ages 3 and 4 and an afternoon

session for ages 4 and 5.

• The elementary school has a Transitional Kindergarten program for kids 5 years old who are eligible to attend kindergarten but are not academically or socially ready.

It’s an all-day, everyday program offered in the school.

TAES also offers physical education classes, music, character education and a strong all-around curriculum.

Sebastian Park and Tracy Aquatic Center

Camp, Picnic & Play at Our Parks Tracy has 25 acres of parks for people of all ages.

Swift Lake Park on the north edge of town offers campers camping pads with electricity (30 or 50 amp). Water is also available. There is a fishing dock on the south side of the lake. Other amenities include a bath house, playground, bike/ walking path and picnic shelter.

Tornado Memorial

The sprawling Central Park is located in the heart of Tracy at 2nd and Rowland streets. The park is home to a band Swift Lake Park Campground shell, roofed picnic shelter, bathrooms, and an ice rink and warming house. The current playground equipment is scheduled to be removed and upgraded sometime later this year.

Youth sports include tackle football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, baseball, softball, T-ball, and recreational activities.

Youth classes comprise of: cooking classes, ATV safety, snowmobile safety, firearm safety, babysitting clinic and driver’s education. There are also numerous camps offered to youth, including basketball, volleyball, football, wrestling, tennis, cheer, track and field, athletic enhancement and intro to weights.

Tracy Public Library Tracy has an outstanding public library, conveniently located in a remodeled building at Third and Morgan.

The main floor of the library features books, audiobooks, periodicals, movies, and CDs. Children’s books are on the main floor, as well as puzzles, games, a children’s table, and Legos. Patrons with library cards and their guests can use the library’s computers. Free Wi-Fi is offered, as are e-books and e-audio books. A mezzanine has a collection of teen and young adult books.

The library also features a conference room that is available to the public and can be reserved. Books unavailable at the Tracy Public Library can be borrowed from another library within the Plum Creek Library System or through its inter-library loan program. A variety of programs are available for people of all ages.

The Tracy Public Library offers everything from books to movies and games.

Garbage Services The City of Tracy has six garbage rates: Curbside Collection: 35 Gallon Container 65 Gallon Container 95 Gallon Container Alley Collection: 35 Gallon Container 65 Gallon Container 95 Gallon Container Fees for the garbage service are included with the City water and sewer bill. Garbage is mandatory for residential pickup. Each resident will be issued a container in the size of their choice from above.

Recycling containers are located in the Tracy Food Pride parking lot.

(507) 865-4530 10 miles southwest of Marshall on Highway 23 Camden State Park is a heavily wooded oasis along the Redwood River of over 1,600 acres. Habitat includes a maple basswood forest and prairie meadows.

• The spring-fed swimming pool has a nice sandy beach, with a sand volleyball court located nearby. There are lifeguards on duty at the pool.

• Nearly 16 miles of hiking trails, eight miles of snowmobile trails, 10 miles of horseback riding trails, over four miles of mountain bike trails, and five miles of cross-country ski trails are in the park.

• The Redwood River is a designated trout stream, with German Brown Trout stocked each spring. Trout stamp required. Brawner Lake has a fishing pier and boat ramp (electric motors only).

• The park has 80 drive-in campsites (upper and lower campgrounds), 29 electrical. There are two wheelchair accessible sites (lower campground) and 12 horse campsites (50-person capacity). The group campsite is located adjacent to the Redwood River and accommodates up to 50 people.

• Reservations accepted 90 days in advance for both campgrounds by calling 866-857-2757 or on-line at www.stayatmnparks.com.

Prairie flowers are abundant at Lake Shetek State Park.

Lake Shetek State Park (507) 763-3256 3.5 miles NW of Currie via County Roads 38 and 37 • The 1,108-acre park’s history is rooted in the US–Dakota War of 1862. In August of that year, Dakota Indians descended on the Shetek settlement. Sixteen white settlers and an unknown number of Dakota were killed.

A monument to those who died stands on the east side of the park.

Wheels Across the Prairie Museum In 1977, a small group of citizens embarked on the long and often frustrating task of erecting a memorial to Tracy pioneers. The purpose was to collect wheels from all facets of their lives — agricultural, railroad and automotive...plus all the little wheels, which helped this country grow and

prosper. The Wheels Across the Prairie Museum opened its doors on June 1, 1985, to share the story with visitors.

The museum boasts the Amiret Post Office and a Car Barn with antique tractors and vintage automobiles. View the power of nature and the horror of the 1968 tornado in pictures. Stop and examine the machinery used by farmers in the early 1900’s.

The village, which has recently been repositioned on the grounds and is under construction, includes the Murray County School House (District 91), an 1897 train depot from Volga, SD, the Sundquist summer kitchen, the Springdale-Imker blacksmith shop, St. Mark’s Church and the recently added section foreman’s house .

The signature attraction is a four-unit freight train. The engine is a 1915 American locomotive used in the yard of the St. Paul railroad system. The engine and the coal car were sold to a private owner in Rochester, MN and later sold again to the museum site. An immigrant box car from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad complements the engine, as does a caboose, which is the rolling workstation.

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday 1-5 p.m.

THE GREG & KRISTINA CARLSON FAMILY We have chosen to raise our ‘boy trio’ in Tracy because our ultimate goal as parents is to raise well rounded sons who understand how important it is to appreciate, enjoy, respect, contribute to, and support their community.

When we moved to Tracy, we were immediately impressed with Tracy Kids World & its 4 Star Parent Aware Program rating. As parents who work outside the home we have loved having this reliable daycare center and the great preschool program! Tracy Area Public Schools have been outstanding to work with and do truly believe that education is a lifestyle.

We have been blessed with teachers who are invested in their work and our children’s best interests. We appreciate smaller class sizes that allow relationships to form with peers and teachers. Learning occurs in so many ways outside the classroom and the boys have opportunities to participate and try various activities that wouldn’t be possible elsewhere. We also appreciate the valuable lessons they are acquiring through activities with Tracy Lutheran Church, Lyon County 4-H, and of course at the “World’s Only Box Car Days”(Bingo is a life skill!).

Safety for our family is also a priority. We feel grateful to have the Sanford Clinic and Hospital so near.

Whether a monkey bars injury, post operative complication, snow sledding accident, or concussion..their staff have always treated us so well when we have needed medical care urgently. It’s comforting to know we have them and other wonderful emergency services as neighbors. Police officers, firefighters, and ambulance crew go out of their way to participate in community events and our kids recognize them because of this.

Our favorite season here is definitely summer and you can usually find us relaxing at the Tracy Aquatic Center, on a bike ride through the Swift Lake bike path, on the baseball field, participating in community education activities, enjoying time at one of the close local lakes, or playing at one of the many playgrounds in town.

We are proud to call Tracy our home and invite you to join us!

THE JAY & SHEILA FULTZ FAMILY In 2006, my wife, Sheila and I and our two kids Nathan (3) and Elizabeth (1) made the move back to Tracy from Minneapolis. Of course, family had something to do with it, my family calls Tracy home. Sheila is from the cities and most of her family is in the Metro area so that was not the main reason. The biggest reasons that brought us back to Tracy, were small town life and the school.

We had all the amenities in Minneapolis. Target seven minutes away, three grocery stores within a mile, restaurants, theaters, parks you name it, it was close. But we did not know our neighbors. We lived in a “safe” part of the city but isn’t that sad to say. Tracy really had EVERYTHING we needed, grocery store, parks, swimming pool, hospital, preschools and it was safe. The speed of life is slower, the traffic is way less!

Yes, the closest Target is 90 minutes away, but between all the stores in Tracy, everything was covered.

When Sheila graduated from Lakeville High School in ‘92, her class was 187 kids. When her brother

OUR STORY… THE JASON & JEN KAINZ FAMILY I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Tracy because I was provided with many wonderful opportunities to be involved in within our community, a well-rounded education and a sense of belonging to a community that truly cared about each other.

After graduating from college with a teaching degree, and living in a fast pace city for four years. I realized I missed everything about small town living and decided to move back to my home town to start my career as a special education teacher in the same elementary school I attended as a student.

I choose to make Tracy my home for a number of reasons. Tracy is a small town that has wonderful amenities for a family with kids of all ages: a beautiful community swimming pool, many parks and ball fields, and bike and walking paths close by.

Tracy provides the opportunity for its residents to make an impact in the community. Numerous boards and organizations are highly engaged and they are always looking for new and different ideas.

Jason and I have established multigenerational friendships through these organizations, and it’s great when neighbors know one another and recognize each other on the street; a spirit of cooperation takes hold, and we’ve always felt that Tracy residents are willing to work together for the greater good. There’s nothing like it.

One of the greatest assets to the community of Tracy is the excellent school system with some of the smallest class sizes in the area.

Another aspect of living in the rural community of Tracy are the many simple pleasures…seeing the stars at night, having the great outdoors right in your own backyard. Attending the world’s only Box Car Days over Labor Day weekend and able to enter any of the area business and being welcomed and helped without needing to ask.

graduated two years later, his class was 356 kids.

When I graduated Tracy in ’92, my class was 68 and I knew everyone. We did not want Nathan and Elizabeth to get lost in the crowd and just be a number. Tracy Schools was the perfect place for them. The classes are small and the opportunities to be involved are plentiful. You do not have to be the star athlete, or the best singer or brightest student to be on a team, or choir or club. We knew the kids could be as involved as they wanted to be with whatever they wanted to do.

Small town living and all its opportunities suits our family and looking back we wouldn’t have wanted to change anything.

OUR STORY… DESMET WELDING We are a three-generation business and Tracy not only has helped us flourish but continues to give us opportunities to grow. The business was purchased by Edward DeSmet on April 1, 1970. The business was then purchased by his son Duane DeSmet and finally by grandson Jamie DeSmet. The agriculture industry in our area, more than anything, is tied to our success. The farming in this area is not going to stop. In addition, there is a lot of opportunity for manufacturing so we are able to continue to grow and be part of the Tracy Community.

“If you ask me what is one of the greatest things about Tracy, it’s great that when you have a problem, even if you don’t know who to go to right away to fix it, you can ask someone and they’ll know,” Jamie said. “It’s a lot about people helping people. That’s one of the things I appreciate about this town.

Jamie said Tracy residents, whether they’re business owners or not, have a lot of pride in their community. That’s one reason he returned to his hometown.

“My dad’s business model has been the same since he took it over from grandpa in 1982,” said Jamie. “There is always the need to repair equipment. The business is very stable, and you can count on it, and we can always count on the community to support us.”

Premium Plant Services, headquartered in Hibbing MN, opened a satellite shop in Tracy in 2007 as an expansion to our business to service primarily the ethanol industry. Along with this, we service the food, mining, and agricultural industries. Tracy was chosen as a good location due to the geographic proximity to the heart of the ethanol plants in the region. It has a broad base of locations in the Midwest to choose from for employment opportunities. Tracy was a great place for a business for me. My dad and grandfather had purchased the agency from Tracy State Bank in 1987 after many years of being involved in numerous Tracy area activities and events.

I graduated from college in 2001 and had known since high school that I wanted to be part of the family business. It gave me the chance to work with family and come back to the small towns that I’ve always loved.

We added a real estate business to our insurance sales in 2002 when we bought Peterson Real Estate from Duane Peterson. Tracy had everything that we wanted when choosing a place to raise our family.
