Wheels Across the Prairie Museum

Opening its doors on Jun. 1, 1985, the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum depicts the transition to using steam engines and the horseless carriage in the Tracy area. The depository showcases wheel artifacts from the agricultural, railroad, and automotive sectors to represent the industries that allowed the county to thrive. As visitors approach the city of Tracy on HWY 14, they are greeted by the museum’s signature 1915 freight train that was part of the St. Paul railroad system. Amiret’s original United States Post Office building, a blacksmith shop, an 1897 train depot and a new display of local Tracy authors, are a few of the exhibits visitors can expect to be educated on in the historical domain. 3297 US Hwy 14, Tracy, MN 56175 Hours: Open seasonally beginning May 22 May: Weekends only, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and by special appointment. June-September: Wed-Fri. 1:00p.m-5:00 p.m.and weekends 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. October-November: Weekends 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 pm and by special appointment Admission: $2 for children 12 and under $6 for children 13 and over

Murray County Museum/Dinehart/Holt House The Murray County Museum, established in 1934, strives to represent the history of Murray County through the collection of artifacts in its exhibits. Step into the Roaring Twenties, walk through a newly-refreshed school display, view the newest transportation exhibit, and somber yourself as you read of the deadly 1940’s Slayton car accident that took the lives of 12 young men and women. 2480 29th St, Slayton, MN 56172 Hours: By appointment only; Tue.-Fri., 10:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission: Free admission, donations accepted.

Dinehart-Holt House Part of the Murray County Museum, the Dinehart-Holt House is a Victorian home that was built in 1891 and tenanted by Mr. Christopher Dinehart and his family. Dinehart was a founder and President of the State Bank of Slayton and was wellknown throughout the city, often hosting parties and opening their home up to members of the community so they could relax and listen to music at the house on Linden Avenue in Slayton. Many members of the Dinehart family lived and died in the home, and it is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. 2812 Linden Ave, Slayton, MN 56172 Hours: By appointment only; Tue.-Fri., 10:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission: $3

Area End-O-Line

Museums

Rail service didn’t exist for the first 30 years of Currie’s life until a single railroad track was expanded to the city and the nickname “End-O-Line” was originated. The 38-mile track began in Bingham Lake and ended at Currie, and the train was turned back around by a fifty-six-foot wood and steel turntable. Although the original turntable was destroyed, a seventy-foot turntable was put in a different location on site for visitors to explore. The museum tour showcases railroad artifacts, steam engines, the county’s first courthouse, and the women’s waiting room of the original Currie depot, among others. 440 North Mill Street, Currie, MN 56123 Hours: Spring Hours (May 4-May 22); Tues. - Sat. 10 A.M. – 4:30 P.M Self Guided Tours Only Summer Hours (May 26 – Sept. 5, 2021) Wed. - Sun. 10 A.M. – 5 P.M. Ingalls Dugout Site Located 1.5 miles north of Walnut Grove, the Ingalls Dugout Site is where Laura Ingalls resided from 1874 to 1876. Rumor has it that visitors can recognize plum thickets, tablelands, spring, and other locations that Laura writes about in her book, “On the Banks of Plum Creek”. Laura’s parents, Charles and Caroline, sold the property after three crop failures and 71 years later, the 172-acre farm was purchased by Harold and Della Gordon. The pair didn’t know the historical significance of the estate until Laura’s book illustrator, Garth Williams, tracked down the Gordon’s after viewing court records revealing their farm to be the location of the Ingalls dugout. 13501 County Rd 5, Walnut Grove, MN 56180 Hours: Seasonal from dawn until dusk Admission: Based on the honor system; $5 per car or $30 per tour bus

Area Lake Shetek State Park’s Monument & Koch Cabin

Shetek

Lake Shetek is the largest lake in southwest Minnesota, spread across five miles with a maximum depth of 10 feet. “Shetek” originates from the Ojibwe word meaning “pelican”, a bird that makes its presence known on the lake during the warmer months. The park includes the only remaining original cabin of Lake Shetek called Koch Cabin with a monument in memory of pioneer settlers and the The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Visit the 45-acre Loon Island that connects to the mainland by a 1,000-foot causeway. Explore the island by hiking the 2.77-mile Loon Island Trail. 163 State Park Road, Currie, MN Hours: Park open daily from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.; Office hours vary Admission: Vehicle permit required and the price varies. For more information, contact the park office at 507-763-3256.

Willow Lake Lutheran Church

One of the area’s oldest churches was built in 1899 and established after a couple with connections to Laura Ingalls Wilder donated the church. The church’s last service may have taken place on Oct. 22, 2006, but the sanctuary still hosts community events and weddings as well as sing-a-longs on the same weekend as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant that is held in Walnut Grove. Costing only $2,000, the congregation first named the 50x28 foot building Willow Lake N orwegian Evangelical Lutheran until 1934 when it was renamed to Shetek Lutheran and lastly to Willow Lake Lutheran in 1943. Address 1907 230th Ave, Currie, MN

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Pageant

Want to Relive the Good Old Days? “Come Home To Laura!” The popular Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant tells the story of 1870’s life in the fledgling prairie town of Walnut Grove. This year’s LIVE outdoor drama is set for Fridays and Saturdays, JULY 9-10,16-17 and 23-24! The family-oriented two-act drama depicts the Ingalls family living near Walnut Grove in the 1870s. Staged in a beautiful natural amphitheater near the banks of Plum Creek a short distance from Walnut Grove, the outdoor drama is faithful to the “Little House” books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Area volunteers make up the cast and production crew of over 60 people. The pageant, in its 44th season has played to over 300,000 people. This story is based on the fourth book in the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, “On the Banks of Plum Creek.” The drama recounts the construction of the town’s church, prairie fires, and the grasshopper plague that wiped out the family’s wheat crop. Elaborate stage sets are complemented with professional lighting and sound systems. The Ingalls’ dugout home, a church, school and general store are among the sets. COVID HEALTH AND SAFETY We are all ready to return from the “intermission of 2020” and present live theater again. To do so, we will follow guidelines from the State of Minnesota. At present we have adjusted seating to allow social distancing, mask wearing and increased hand washing opportunities. We do this for the safety of both our family audiences and the cast and crew. For update regarding changes to this policy visit the updated, mobile friendly website at walnutgrove.org/pageant. Look under PATRON POLICIES for a complete list of expectations and rules that will be enforced for everyone’s health and safety. PAGEANT TICKETS Tickets are best ordered by calling the ticket office at 888-859-3102. Tickets will be held in Will Call. Email confirmation provided. Tickets may be purchased at the gate but call ahead for availability. Seating options are described on our webpage. VIP Seating $25. Reserved Seating price $20. Child may sit on adult lap without charge. General admission $18. Children age 5 and under admitted free in general admission. General admission holders should bring blankets or folding

chairs for hillside seating. Gates open at 7:00 p.m. NEW THIS YEAR. Performance begins at 8:30 p.m. LOCATION One mile west and one-half mile south of Walnut Grove on Crown Avenue. The roads are all in good shape so far this year. Thank you to Mother Nature and the Minnesota Department of Transportation! PAGEANT SUPPERS During pageant weekends, churches and community groups serve meals from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Walnut Grove Community Center at 311 Sixth Street. Open to the public. Menus may vary. Call 888859-3102 for group reservations of 25 or more. Check website in june for additional menu options. FAMILY FESTIVAL This free annual event at the Walnut Grove City Park offers children’s activities, pioneer demonstrations, concessions, arts and crafts, live music and vendor displays. The festival is held three Saturdays of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant (July 10, 17, 24).
