Currie Fourth of July Celebrating the Fourth of July in Currie is an annual tradition for countless families. Grilled burgers and hot dogs, volleyball and softball tournaments, and Duck Races in the Des Moines River are part of the fun. A spectacular ireworks display at dusk caps off the festivities. Currie has long been known as the Gateway to Lake Shetek, with Lake Shetek State Park just three miles north of town.

The Tracy Engineers play home games at the high school ield and have a number of Sunday afternoon home games, which begin at 2 p.m. There are two teams under the Milroy umbrella — the Yankees and the Irish. The Yankees’ home ield is located in Milroy on the south east edge of town, while the Irish play at Irish Yard, a “Field of Dreams”-type ballpark that gained iconic standing before the irst pitch was even thrown, as it was literally cut into farm ields several years ago. Check out these teams’ schedules at: http://milroyirish.teams. mnbaseball.org, http://milroyyankees.com, or on facebook @TracyEngineersBaseball.
Close up views are possible at the Currie fireworks. The display is shot off at dusk from a city softball field.

Slaughter Slough is a peaceful wildlife production area today.
Slaughter Slough A lonely monument resting on three stones looks over the prairie several miles east of Lake Shetek at the Slaughter Slough Waterfowl Production Area. The monument marks the horri ic, August 20, 1862, encounter between a group of about 40 settlers, who had led their homes on Lake Shetek, and a group of Dakota warriors. The settlers had abandoned a horsedrawn wagon and sought refuge in nearby tall slough grasses after being attacked by their pursuers. Fourteen settlers, including eight children, were killed in and around the slough and near Lake Shetek, on that day. An unknown number of Dakota also died. Twenty-one settlers managed to escape or survive the attacks, with two women and four children taken captive. Later that fall, a group of Dakota young men, at a great sacri ice to themselves, bartered for the
captives’ freedom in North Dakota and brought them to U.S. military authorities. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages the site as a Waterfowl Production Area. Interpretive signage, a short trail, and the rock memorial honor the three groups connected with the 1862 tragedy. The irst stone honors the Dakota Indians, the inhabitants of the land prior to white settlement. The second honors the white settlers who came to Shetek in search of a better life. The third is for the Dakota men, who were called the “Fool Soldier Band” by their people, who won the captives’ freedom. A parking area and trail leading to the monument is near the intersection of County Roads 37 and 96.
Willow Lake Lutheran Church The former Willow Lake Lutheran Church is the Tracy area’s last surviving white-steeple country church. Located on a hill seven miles south and one mile east of Tracy, the church was erected by irst-generation Norwegian immigrants in 1899. The Willow Lake congregation, which was organized in 1874, disbanded in 2006, but the Friends of Willow Lake non-pro it organization was formed to preserve the country church. The Willow Lake Church is open for hymn sings in July and September. For more information, call 507-6293488 or email friendsofwillowlake@gmail.com. Mary Mickelson, who donated land for the Willow Lake Church with her husband, shares several similarities with her more famous contemporary, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Both Mary and Laura were born in 1867. They were also married in the same year (1885), and died in the same year (1957). Willow Lake Lutheran Church remains a stately sentinel to the faith of Norwegian immigrants who established the congregation in 1874. The white-steeple church, northeast of Lake Shetek and south of Tracy, is the last remaining country church in the Tracy area.
The Willow Lake Church is three miles north of Slaughter Slough, where Shetek settlers and Dakota Indians had a tragic encounter on August 20, 1862.

Plum Creek
Despite its modest size, this creek is one of the most well-known in the state because of its mention in the Laura Ingalls Wilder book “On the Banks of Plum Creek as well as the “Little House on the Prairie television series. Located near the family’s dugout site one and onehalf miles north of Walnut Grove, Plum Creek is 34.5 miles long and passes through the pageant site southwest of Walnut Grove, eventually emptying into the Cottonwood River. Visitors can wade in the water by the dugout site just as Laura and her sisters likely did many years ago. Plum Creek got its name from the many wild plum trees along is course.
Plum Creek Park/Lake Laura Picturesque Plum Creek Park offers just over 200 acres to enjoy southwest of Walnut Grove. There’s both an Upper and Lower Plum Creek Park. The 70-unit campground located near Lake Laura in the Upper Park has private treelined sites for both RVs and tents. Electric hook ups are available for an extra charge. Firewood is available. Two-night minimum stay. A sandy beach and swimming area are nearby at Lake Laura. Canoeing is permitted, but motorized boats are prohibited. Pan ish, bass and northern pike are stocked in the lake. A hiking path circles the lake.
Visitors can wade in Plum Creek and see where the original Ingalls family dugout was located on the banks of Plum Creek.
The Upper Park also offers a nine-hole Frisbee golf course, playground equipment, two softball ields, sand volleyball courts, and a picnic area with shelter. Look for 23 tree varieties on the “When the Prairie Whispers walking tour. The park is one mile west and one mile south of Walnut Grove on County Road 78. For more information, visit www. walnutgrove.org. For camping reservations, call 888-528-7268.

End-O-Line Railroad Park & Museum The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum in Currie is on the National Register of Historic places. The museum and park recall Currie’s early days, when it was the terminus for a Chicago & Northwestern branch line from Bingham Lake. Because Currie was the end of the line, a handoperated turntable was used to turn steam locomotives around. The turntable is still operable today. Local people take great pride in the fact that the museum began with a 1972 Community Pride 4-H project
The Railroad Yard The railroad arrived in Currie in 1899 with the arrival of the branch line. Originally, it was planned to extend the line to South Dakota, but it remained a dead end, because east-west rail lines already existed through nearby Tracy and Slayton. The Currie Depot #1958 was originally built across from the museum site and was transferred to its current location on the grounds in 1974. A working H-O scale train and model city of Currie are displayed in the restored depot.
Time seems to stand still at End-O-Line Park, where a vintage steam locomotive seems to have just steamed into Currie.
Visitors can tour several buildings within the railroad yard. An engine house has a rebuilt 1875 narrow gauge Baldwin steam locomotive, along with several other interesting displays and exhibits. Also in the yard is a Chicago & Northwestern water tower, a Section Foreman’s home, and a replica coal bunker that serves as a picnic shelter. A Georgia Northern #102 engine, a 1945 Minneapolis and St. Louis Bay Window wood caboose, a 1942 restored Grand Trunk Western caboose, a Brookville diesel switcher, velocipede, and Fairmont motorcars are also displayed.
The 1870 Currie General Store, the irst general store in Murray County, offers a glimpse of the goods that were sold and traded nearly 150 years ago. The Neil Currie gristmill, which the town was built around, holds the original grinding stone that was once used along the Des Moines River.
The Historic Village
An N-Scale model train layout depicting a ictitious town setting graces the gift shop. The shop offers clothing, books, refreshments, and souvenirs. The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum is on the northern edge of Currie off County Highway 38.
A boardwalk guides visitors to the 1873 Sunrise District #1 country schoolhouse where students in eight grades were educated together. In the summer months, services are still conducted in an 1871 Presbyterian Church. The school and church were the irst built in Murray County. A replica of the Murray County Courthouse that was used from 1873-1889 showcases exhibits from the early Currie days, as well as artifacts from the 1891 Murray County Courthouse that was built in Slayton.
Gift Shop End-O-Line is open Wednesday-Sunday from Memorial weekend through Labor Day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is charged. An open house is scheduled Wednesday, July 4. For more information, call 507763-3708, email endoline@co.murray.mn.us, visit the website at www. endoline.com, or ind us on Facebook.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Tourist Center Since its inception in 1974, the Little House on the Prairie Museum in Walnut Grove has attracted visitors from over 100 countries and all 50 states. Because of the popularity of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and the “Little House on the Prairie” television series, which also debuted in 1974, visitors have locked to the museum for a chance to step back in time and visualize how the Ingalls and other families of that period lived.
The dugout home is the same size as the one described in Laura’s book “On the Banks of Plum Creek”. Visitors can go inside the dugout and get a feeling of what life would be like to live in a 10’ x 10’ space dug into the side of a creek bank.
The museum offers visitors a comprehensive collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder history. See an actual quilt used by Laura and her daughter Rose, a Bible from the church the Ingalls family attended, historic documents, and scale models of Ingalls family television homes.
Gift Store
There is also a collection of items donated by the many stars of the Little House on the Prairie TV series that have visited the museum over the years. The museum also has several historic buildings, including a chapel, an 1898 depot, country schoolhouse, early settler’s home, a dugout home, an onion-domed house, a covered wagon, and more.
A Kelton Doll Collection that features over 250 dolls from 1870 to modern time is on display. The museum is open daily during June, July, and August, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with shorter hours in April, May, September, and October.
A recently-remodeled gift store at the museum offers a wide selection of books pertaining to Laura Ingalls Wilder, souvenirs, hand-sewn pioneer clothing, t-shirts, sweatshirts, snacks, and handcrafted items. Many items can be ordered through the museum’s website at www.walnutgrove.org.
Ingalls Dugout Site Open from May through October, this site gives visitors access to the Ingalls family’s original dugout site referenced in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book “On the Banks of Plum Creek”.
Country View Senior Living is known for its home-like atmosphere.
Located one and one-half miles north of Walnut Grove, the site has an informational sign as to the exact site along Plum Creek that the Ingalls lived when they arrived in Walnut Grove in 1874. All that remains now of their dugout home is a depression on the banks of Plum Creek, yet visitors still enjoy the experience.
Country View Senior Living Community in Walnut Grove has 16 assisted living and 12 independent living units in a variety of loor plans. The facility has an attached medical clinic. Meal programs, home care assistance, medication management, escorts, safety checks, health monitoring, and nurse visits are among the services offered. Staff is available 24 hours a day.
Harold and Della Gordon purchased the land in 1947, unaware of its historical connection at the time. Following courthouse records, Garth Williams, the illustrator of Laura’s books, discovered the Gordon’s farm had been homesteaded by the Ingalls. The Gordon family continues to maintain access to the dugout site and other items mentioned in Laura’s book such as “The Big Rock”, spring, and plum thickets. Storyboards assist the visitors along the path, which includes a bridge over the creek. Twenty- ive acres of native grasses have been planted around the dugout site.
A beauty shop, exercise room, billiard room, garages, community room, indoor mailboxes, elevator, and planned activities are among the amenities offered. For more information or to schedule a tour, call 507859-2133.
The site is open daily from dawn to dusk from May through October, weather permitting. Entrance is through the 1900-era farmstead on Redwood County Road 5. Follow the signs to a parking and picnic area. A nominal carload admission is charged.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant The popular Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant is preparing to re-tell the story of 1870s life in the ledgling prairie town of Walnut Grove. This year’s outdoor drama is scheduled Friday and Saturday, July 6-7, 13-14, and 20-21. The family-oriented two-act drama depicts the life of the Ingalls family near Walnut Grove in the 1870s. Staged in a beautiful natural amphitheater near the banks of Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, the pageant is faithful to the “Little House” books written by Laura IngallsWilder. Local volunteers make up the cast and production crew. Elaborate stage sets are complemented with professional-level lighting and sound systems. The Ingalls’ dugout home, a church, school and general store are among the sets. The story is based on the fourth book in the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, “On the Banks of Plum Creek.” The pageant recounts events such as the construction of the town’s church, prairie ires, and the grasshopper plague that wiped out the family’s wheat crop. A mature Laura, looking back on her life, narrates the story. Pre-pageant musical entertainment begins at 8 p.m., with performances beginning at 9 p.m. This is the 41st season for the pageant. Pageant Tickets: Reserved seating: 1,000 numbered chairs for $20 (children may sit on an adult’s lap for free). General admission: $18. Children age 5-and-under: free in general admission. General admission ticket holders should bring their own blanket or folding chair for hillside seating. Call 888-859-3102 or visit www.walnutgrove.org for more information or for reserved tickets. Location: One mile west and one-half mile south of Walnut Grove on Crown Avenue. Pageant Suppers: During the weekends of the pageant, various churches and community groups serve meals from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Walnut Grove Community Center at 311 Sixth Street. Open to the public. Menus may vary. Call 888-859-3102 for group reservations of 25 or more. Family Festival: This free annual event at the Walnut Grove City Park offers children’s activities, pioneer demonstrations, concessions, arts and crafts, live music and vendor displays. The festival is held three Saturdays of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant (July 7, 14, 21). Plum Creek Rendezvous & Black Powder Shoot, July 6 & 7, two miles south and one mile west of Walnut Grove. See authentically attired re-enactors test their skills shooting black-powder irearms. Laura/Nellie Look-Alike Contest: Many of the costumed girls seen roaming around town during pageant Saturdays are actually participating in the popular Laura Ingalls Wilder and Nellie Oleson look-alike contests.
Registration for girls 8-12 is held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on July 7, 14, 21 at the Walnut Grove City Park. Online registration is also available by visiting www.walnutgrove.org. Look-a-like contests begin at 3 p.m. Prizes are awarded based on overall appearance and knowledge of the “On the Banks of Plum Creek” book. Loggers Fishing Derby: Free. Saturday, July 14 beginning at 10 a.m. at Lake Laura in Plum Creek Upper Park located one and a half miles southwest of Walnut Grove. Kids ages 12-and-under can try their luck at catching a ish and earn a prize. Bring your own ishing pole. Bait will be provided.
Walnut Grove Attractions Congregational Church Site The 1874 church that the Ingalls family attended was located on the corner of 5th and Bedel Streets. The church was torn down in 1954, replaced by private home that is unavailable for viewing.
Ingalls School Site Once the site of the country school that Laura Ingalls Wilder and her sisters Mary and Carrie attended in the 1870s. Located on the corner of 4th and Washington Streets, the school was torn down by 1903 and the site is now a private home and unavailable for viewing.
Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Monument Traveling north of Walnut Grove on County Road 5 for 1.6 miles will take you to a stone monument that honors the early pioneers of the area, including the Ingalls family.
Masters Hotel Located on the corner of 8th Street and County Road 20, efforts are underway to restore the site to how it looked in Laura’s time.
Pa’s Bell The original bell that Charles Ingalls helped purchase now hangs in the belfry of the English Lutheran Church at 450 Wiggins Street. The Ingalls family became charter members of the Congregational Church. Pa Ingalls helped pay for the church bell by donating the last $3 he had saved for a pair of new boots. The church is since gone, but the English Lutheran Church purchased the bell for its new building. The bell still calls people to worship each Sunday morning.
