LETTER FROM

Our Mayor

On behalf of the Balaton City Council, our city staff and all of our wonderful residents, I want to personally welcome you to Balaton and invite you to explore the many options we have to offer throughout the year. We are a close tight knit rural city on one of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes. We are proud of all we have to offer.

Our public school system is consolidated with Tracy for grades K-12 and is known as Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (TMB). The school excels wonderfully with academics and sports. The TMB school district has been recognized several times for providing the best education in the state.

Lake Yankton, located on Highway 14 is just on the North edge of Balaton. In the summer time, people from all around enjoy swimming, ishing, boating, a great playground, and picnic areas for families to enjoy time together. The ishing is great year round, once you have igured out when the ish are biting. Our lake is also the location of the kick-off for our town celebration, Balaton Fun Fest. This 3-day fun illed weekend will run July 1-3, 2016. Please join us for music from live bands, a lighted boat parade, games for all ages, ireworks and many more activities throughout the weekend.

In addition to the park on the lake, Balaton has other parks and recreation areas that include basketball, baseball, sand volleyball, horseshoes and frisbee disc golf. On the east side of town we have Eastbay. Eastbay is a 3-par beautifully landscaped golf course. In addition to the golf course, there is housing development on the course and additional lots for sale should you wish to build your dream house on a golf course. This development offers paved streets, city water and sewer already installed. Eastbay offers great country living with city services.

Our downtown district offers various services to ful ill your daily needs such as a full-service fuel service station, a bank, itness center, restaurant/pub and a hair salon. Furthermore, we have a mechanic shop, insurance of ices and a dental of ice. Our downtown also offers a liquor store and bar. A great addition to the downtown area is the Balaton Community Historical Center.

The city and Economic Development Authority own the Colonial Manor Nursing Home and Lakeview Housing with Services. This complex is located directly across from the lake on Highway 14.

Our nursing home is one of the top rated and ranked nursing homes in the state. They have won several awards in recognition of the hard work our staff puts forth with the residents. Sanford Medical also offers a clinic in part of a wing at the nursing home.

Balaton also has a wide variety of civic organization opportunities for anybody to be involved with. To name a few: The Lions Club, The American Legion, Balaton Chamber of Commerce, Balaton Women of Today and more. We also have the Balaton Area Community Foundation which provides an opportunity to give back to our community.

Balaton Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The Balaton Chamber of Commerce works to “promote and support the community of Balaton and its businesses”. However you don’t need to be a business owner to be a member.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join.

The chamber meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Balaton Community Center.

Events that the Chamber sponsors include the Chamber Banquet, Easter Egg Hunt, Fun Fest, Fall Festival, Tour of Homes and Christmas Night. New events for sponsorship in 2016 are the Little Miss and Mr. Balaton contest and the All-Town Rummage sale.

The Balaton Chamber welcomes new homeowners to the community by giving them a one-year subscription to

the Balaton Press-Tribune. New businesses are acknowledged with a First Dollar Award. The Chamber makes donations throughout the year to various organizations and projects. Our latest project is a multi-generational playground and nature playscape in the Eastbay addition. We hope to have a plan soon to share with the public.

Membership dues are $15 per person with a $75 business cap.

Public Library

Visit the Balaton Public Library for information and entertainment for all ages. The library is located at 134 Third Street, next door to the City Of ices.

In addition to the usual traditional library materials, such as books and magazines, the Balaton Library offers much more: Books on CD, movies and other videos on DVD, music CD’s, books with puppets and decorative cake pans. There are two computers available for the public to use with Internet Access. Also, please feel free to come in with your own device and use the WIFI connection.

We offer a good selection of books in all genres. The books on the shelves though, are only the beginning of what we have to offer. Balaton is a branch of the Marshall Lyon County Library.

We have easy access to all of their books and other materials, including movies. Often these arrive within a couple of days.

Beyond that, the library is also a part of the Plum Creek Library and MN Link. This gives us free access to books and other materials from the entire state of Minnesota. Orders for these materials can be done online or stop in and we will be glad to help you ind whatever you need.

The library has a book discussion group, “The Balaton Bookworms,� which meets on the 3rd Monday of the month from Sept. through May. In conjunction with this, we have held a program called Armchair Traveler with area speakers sharing their travel adventures. Each year we pick a new adult program.

The library sponsors Reading Programs also, for adults in the winter and for children and teens in the Summer. Once a month during the school year, the library holds a children’s program which includes the reading of books and crafts centered around a seasonal theme.

EDA

The Balaton EDA is a volunteer group, which spearheads projects for the stability and improvements of the local economy. Business development loans can be applied for through the EDA. The Eastbay Addition, a 76-lot housing development, has a wildlife walking trail, city utilities, and encompasses a nine-hole, par-three golf course. Lot sales are completed through Dan Williams, Edina Realty, at EDA Director Tara Onken 507-337-6683.

The Balaton EDA community organization now has a Facebook page where you will ind more information and a view of the Eastbay lots for sale and other photos.

Historical Center

The Balaton Area Historical Center is located at 161 2nd St. West, Balaton, MN. The historical society was initiated on March 23, 2009 and the current building was purchased in July 2011 with the mortgage paid off in 2013. The building was named Balaton Area History Center and meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The annual meeting is held in March with a dinner and a special speaker. The society is a 501(c)3 organization which allows all donations to be tax deductible.

New members are always welcome! Dues are $20 per person.

The History Center will be open in 2016 on Mondays, 1-4 p.m. and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon beginning April 4 through the end of October. Saturdays will be open upon appointment only.

Fishing is a great past-time for area residents on Lake Yankton.

Community Foundation

“The Balaton Area Community Foundation (BACF) is dedicated to making Balaton a growing and healthy community by providing opportunities for everyone to impact the present and invest in the future.” This is the mission statement of the BACF, which was established in 2008.

The BACF operates under the guidance of the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF), which holds the 501(c)3 certi ication that allows donations to the BACF to be tax deductible as the law permits. The SWIF also coordinates all investments of funds and provides for other technical assistance.

The BACF funds generally fall into three categories: 1) the Endowment Fund in which the donations are invested and a portion of the earnings is available to spend each year; 2) a Project Fund in which the donations have been designated for a speci ic project, such as the new basketball court in Lion’s Park; and, 3) Operations/petty cash fund, from which supplies, postage, etc. are purchased for mailings, brochures, and other administrative expenses.

Since its inception, the BACF has returned more than $41,000 back to Balaton area from these funds, including the playground equipment in Lion’s Park, nursing home room decorating, a sound system in the community center, a disc golf course at the athletic ield, benches, and a daily paper subscription for the community center and library. In cooperation with other organizations, a new basketball court in Lion’s Park and a new pier at Lake Yankton have been realized. The BACF also donated funds to Colonial Manor towards a rocking wheel chair, to Balaton Area Historical Society towards a computer system and to Balaton Fire Department towards upgrading a tanker truck.

Plans for the future include a possible bridge between Benson’s by the Lake and the Nursing Home Campus. This will also allow for golf carts to reach the golf course since they are not allowed on the highway.

Advisory board members serve unpaid three-year terms and can be elected for up to three consecutive terms. Current members are Gayle Kaup, Willis Wendland, Ann Gifford, Mary Timmerman, Theresa Zaske, Bruce Larson, Del Rutz, Marcia Wee and Rachel Janssen.

Balaton Apartments is a 20-unit apartment complex that has eight one-bedroom apartments, 10 two-bedroom apartments, and two three-bedroom apartments. Rent is based on income. Water, sewer, and garbage are included in the rent and cable is available.

Apartments are equipped for air conditioners. Amenities include a resident lounge area, mail delivery, and laundry facilities.

Remodeling was done on several apartments in 2013-14 and a vegetable garden has been added.

Balaton Apartments is owned by SMR Management based out of Mankato. Mary Chelin manages the apartments and is responsible for taking care of the building. Her goal is to promote a warm, friendly atmosphere for the residents.

PreSchool

Balatonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Little Panthers Preschool is located in the former St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parochial School building and began there in 2010 after the closing of the Balaton Public School.

Hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Monday-Thursday of each week for 120 days of the school year. Children ages 3 ½ to 5 years old are accepted from the Balaton area. Transportation is provided to and from day care facilities.

The play-based curriculum includes breakfast, large motor and ine motor activities, music, art, and stories. Some stories are read by local residents. Field trips are taken during the year to places such as the apple orchard by Slayton, museums, or zoos.

ECFE family classes are also held for two 8 week sessions in the evenings.

Military Memorial

The Balaton Military Memorial is located on Lake Avenue in Lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park. The memorial includes the names of Balaton area people and other veterans who have served in the military, and is illuminated at night. The Balaton American Legion Post 237 planned and erected the memorial in May of 2001, and the site was dedicated on Veteransâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day 2001.

The committee continues to add names to the memorial as necessary. For more information on the memorial contact any Balaton American Legion member.

The Balaton American Legion holds meetings year-round on the second Monday of the month and the Auxiliary meets September through May. Potluck dinner begins at 6 p.m. and respective meetings follow at 7 p.m. at the Balaton Community Center.

FRED SWANSON MEMORIAL

Nature Trail

The Fred Swanson Memorial Nature Trail borders the Eastbay Addition and Eastbay 9 Golf Course on the northeast edge of Balaton. The parking area for the trail is the wayside rest across U.S. Highway 14 at Knudson-Bosley Memorial Park (Lake Yankton).

The trail begins behind the Colonial Manor Nursing Home with a path behind the Balaton water building that extends around the Eastbay addition and Eastbay 9 Golf Course, back to Highway 14 east of Balaton.

The area bordering the mowed trail has an abundance of birds and wildlife, wild lowers and plants native to the area, including eagles. There are plaques along the trail that identify wildlife highlights.

The area is open to hunting and trapping during all stateregulated seasons. Due to zoning regulations, the trail must remain in its natural state, and walkers must remain on the trail and not walk on private property of homeowners bordering the trail.

Sportsmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club The Sportsmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, in its 72nd year, mission is to promote, execute and assist in all matters related to hunting and ishing, as well as the conservation and restoration of our natural resources.

The club meets on the last Monday of each month, except for July, August and September.

They are responsible for several projects throughout the year.

Projects include Highway 14 ditch cleanup in the spring, Spink Lake food plot harvest in the spring, Lake Yankton Fishing Tournament held in June, Take a Kid Fishing at Lake Yankton and gun training in the spring. Installation and removal of oxygen aerators on four local lakes is done during the winter.

Balaton Sportsmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club held its 43rd annual Wild Game Feed in March 2016. The Fall Fun Night banquet is held in September.

The club has worked on several projects with the DNR, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited.

The course is available during spring, summer and fall months with frisbees and scorecards available at the course for Balaton area residents and visitors to the area.

ORGANIZATIONS

Lakers 4-H Club The Lakers 4-H Club meets once a month at the Sillerud Lutheran Church. The club has a community pride project at Currant Lake Park. Club members exhibit their projects at the Murray County Fair and the Minnesota State Fair each year. The Lakers go on fun ield trips, plus have awesome fair exhibits. Balaton Lions Club The Lions Club meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Benson’s by the Lake in Balaton. Lions raise money to help people with vision problems, and collect glasses. They also provide funds for training Seeing Eye dogs.

Park Commission The Park Commission meets once a month from April though September. Their goal is to improve all Balaton Area Parks including Eastbay 9.

Book Worms Club The Balaton Book Worms meet each month on the third Monday at 7 p.m. at Benson’s by the Lake. They select a book for members to read and discuss the books during their meeting times.

Shotokan Karate Club Beginners (6:30-7:00 p.m.) and Advance (7:00-8:30 p.m.) classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the Ralco Technology Center gymnasium. Tournaments and additional training events are also held. For more information contact Chief instructor Jerry Lupkes at 507-734-6915.

Camden State Park (507) 865-4530 10 miles southwest of Marshall on Highway 23 Camden State Park is a prairie oasis with over 1,600 acres of river valley, maple basswood forest, prairie meadows, and clear bubbling springs.

Spring-fed swimming pool and beach area. A sand volleyball court is located near the beach. There are no lifeguards on duty at the pool.

Nearly 16 miles of hiking trails, eight miles of snowmobile trails, 10 miles of horseback riding trails, over four miles of mountain bike trails, and ive miles of cross-country ski trails.

Brown Trout stocked each spring. Trout stamp required. Brawner Lake has a ishing pier and boat ramp (electric motors only).

The park has 80 drive-in campsites (upper and lower campgrounds), 29 electrical. There are two wheelchair accessible sites (lower campground) and 12 horse campsites (50-person capacity). The group campsite is located adjacent to the Redwood River and accommodates up to 50 people.

Lake Shetek State Park (507) 763-3256 3.5 miles NW of Currie via County Roads 38 and 37 The 1,108-acre park’s history is rooted in the US–Dakota War of 1862. In August of that year, Dakota Indians descended on the Shetek settlement. Sixteen white settlers and an unknown number of Dakota were killed. A monument to those who died stands on the east side of the park.

The park has 70 drive-in campsites (Oak Woods and Sunrise campgrounds), 64 electrical (32 have sewer, water and electric with 50 amp service). There are seven cart-in sites, seven wheelchair accessible sites, and one primitive group camp (Wilderness camp).

The Zuya Group Center has an 80-person capacity. There are also Parks & Recreation: See page 22

Garvin Park (507) 532-8214 www.LyonCo.org In Lyon County one mile north of the junction of Highways 59 and 14.

The Lyon County park’s 700 rolling acres include rugged hills and grassy meadows. The Cottonwood River runs through the park. Garvin Park has marked trails for hiking and horseback riding in the summer, and is a popular spot for picnicking and camping. The Horse Camp site is designed speci ically for riders to camp and has 17 sites with electrical hook-ups.

The campground is open from mid-May through mid-October.

Garvin Park offers ive large picnic shelters with tables (four with electric), shower facilities, a softball ield and lookout tower.

A 9-hole disc golf course passes through a mix of oak woods, elevation changes, and open spaces. Distance of play is about 3,200 feet and walking distance is about 5,100 feet.

Swenson Park Located on the north side of Current Lake.

Swenson Park’s 18 RV sites include electrical hook-up, picnic tables, ire rings and grills. Dump station is provided. Playground, boat ramp with dock are available. Most sites are wheelchair accessible. Sites are irst come, irst serve basis. New bathroom/ shower facilities and frisbee disc course were completed in 2015.

Current lake is great for swimming and ishing. Fish species include walleye, northern and pan ish.
